  9. 2.0 (Hindi) Has Good Second Week
    Friday 14 December 2018 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

2.0 (Hindi) had a good second week of 37.50 crore nett apprx though the film did see falling collections on the weekdays. The film has a two week total of 175 crore net now and is the third highest grossing Hindi film of 2018 after Sanju and Padmaavat..

The 200 crore nett mark will probably be a step too far and its looking a finish of around 190 crore but that will depend on the business today (Friday). The first week saw under performance in Mumbai but it has done better in that circuit in week two. The bigger drops were in North where the film had a very strong first week. Its a huge result for the film as eventually its a dubbed South film and it is difficult for these types to open and sustain and very few films have managed it.

    Tuesday – 3,00,00,000 apprx

    Wednesday – 2,50,00,000 apprx

    Thursday – 2,00,00,000 apprx

    Week Two – 37,50,00,000

    TOTAL – 1,75,00,00,000 apprx

  10. Kedarnath Does Well In First Week
    Friday 14 December 2018 12.45 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Kedarnath has done pretty well in its first week as it collected 42 crore nett apprx and did see the weekdays hold up well. The collections actually held up better than 2.0 (Hindi) in the weekdays which is an accepted film though this could be that 2.0 (Hindi) has consumed most of its potential theatrical audience.

The results of Kedarnath in week one are better than most would have expected but it is still very important to follow through in the second week as the first week is just a decent total and not huge which would ensure the film is a success

There are a few Hindi releases like Bhaagte Raho and Once Again among others but the main competition will be Aquaman which had decent collections in paid previews and could do well over the weekend which will give Kedarnath competition.. The first week daily collections of Kedarnath are as follows.

    Friday – 7,25,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 9,75,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 10,75,00,000 apprx

    Monday – 4,25,00,000 apprx

    Tuesday – 3,75,00,000 apprx

    Wednesday – 3,25,00,000 apprx

    Thursday – 3,00,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 42,00,00,000 apprx

There were five Hindi releases with Bhaagte Raho, Dhappa, Jeet Lo Marathon, P.K. Lele and Once Again but all five are basically unknown films so will not have an audience. The release count with these five films have gone over 200 for the year to amke it 202 Hindi releases in 2018.

The Hollywood release Aquaman had a fair start of around 15% and should put up a decent opening day number. The problem of Hollywood this year in India has been very few films that have managed to get some opening numbers have actually managed to sustain and Aquaman could face the same issues depending on the reports of the film. The film managed to collect close to 2 crore nett in paid previews on Thursday.

The Avengers – Infinity War was a historic blockbuster while Jurassic World – Fallen Kingdom and Mission Impossible- Fallout proved to be SUPER HITS while Black Panther was a HIT but other releases could not do much better than average business at the box office.

The Spiderman: Into The Spider Verse opened to a poor response and will not collect much on its first day.

Pad Man had an average start in China and is probably looking at around $1.75 million on day one whereas Toilet Ek Prem Katha which did decent in China had opened to over $2.25 million.

  17. Aamir and Amitabh Bachcha serving dhoklas at the Ambani wedding: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wSa27IPtlEA&time_continue=2

Between the Ambani-Piramals and PC-Jonas, strategic wedding PR and pompous power displays have reached a whole new (tasteless) level in India!

    • Amitabh,Aamir, SRK, Anil Kapoor, others …many were part of the ritual, obviously. Have seen all the shaming being done on twitter since last evening — and realised again what a fucked up place is social media. To quote an fb commenter:

This ritual is called sajanghot where ladki wale serve food to ladke wale.. they represent ladki wale… it’s an honourable ritual… comments are full of idiots who know nothing about rituals

      Well said.

      Like

      • No one is commenting about the ritual but about the Ambani’s vulgar display of power by making every single top Bollywood stars literally dance to their tunes and broadcasting it to media along with all other minute details of their most extravagant wedding.

You might find this admirable but some of us find this sort of conspicuous, very public consumption in the Indian context (particularly) obscene, even if he spent 0.05% of the wedding budget to feed some poor people in Udaipur (which was strategically caught on camera and circulated everywhere). That’s a difference in opinion we are allowed to have on this blog without resorting to attacking each other with terms like idiot, surely?

Shockingly enough, you are not the only one who knows about our wedding rituals! It’s just that some of us ‘idiots’ are skeptical about the entirety of top Bollywood glitterati becoming part of the ‘ladki wali’ family in front of the cameras after acting as background dancers during the Sangeet.

There’s no need for you to pounce on anyone who mentions Aamir in any context and address them with derogatory terms like idiots; we are not all out to malign him. You really need to relax! I specifically posted this video because obviously these are our two most respected and dignified actors, more so than Anil Kapoor et al and even they have succumbed to the Ambani PR circus.

        • Once they accept the invitation, they have to become part of the circus. They cant refuse the invitation from the biggest industrialist. It is basic manners. By the way SMJ has some connection with Reliance Foundation. One things leads to the other. I think Bachchan and other stars would serve even the poorest without batting an eyelid if occassion calls for it.

The OTT wedding ceremonies and receptions where wealth, power and connections are displayed without an inch of embarrassment. They just dont care.

In some way I am also ok somewhat because these things humanize them and show us what they are and their weaknesses or majboori. The limelight can be harsh.

I am developing a sense of humour and cynicism which makes me feel less outrageous and more cynical and sympathetic.

Just go through Sridevi funeral videos and the unwanted publicity and how public consumed that news with much voyeurism than sorrow. The shock and sorrow were not allowed to persist with a simple funeral with only family members. They allowed it to become a State funeral. Death lost its sanctity.

        • To be clear, I’m not criticising Bacchan or Aamir here but the Ambanis for orchestrating this vulgar circus and broadcasting it on Indian media to prove their power to the average Indian who goes without many of the basic necessities, forget luxuries. This wedding was a very cynical, strategic PR exercise to boast about their influence and wealth to the country. Which industrialist (as opposed to actor/ celeb) broadcasts everything including their daughter’s wedding ceremony and thali tying ritual to the entire nation (and world) when it should have been a personal and sacred affair?

It’s understandable that they wanted to celebrate their daughter’s wedding to their taste but what was the need to turn it into this sort of a boastful media circus that has dominated our newsfeeds for more than a week? At least with PC and Jonas they are in the show business and need the PR to fuel their careers, for Ambani this publicity was merely an exercise in unchecked vanity. Not to mention the harmful trickle-down effect that such a relentless and constant glamourisation of spending millions on your daughter’s wedding has on a country that already has a very skewed sex ratio due to the unnecessary financial demands placed on the bride’s family.

I saw some tweets about how Americans will now apparently be jealous of India since Ambani got Beyoncé to perform at his daughter’s wedding. LOL! America has more than enough billionaires of its own, the difference is that Bill Gates is spending his money to eradicate poverty and polio while Ambani is spending his money on this tacky circus.

And then there are the ignorant reactions from people on social media about how this apparently proves that India is a wealthy country that others need to be jealous of. Err…all this proves is that India is a tremendously inequal country; even the poorest little sub-Saharan nations and crisis-struck Latin American economies have a tiny elite that spend pompously and publically. Indian (mainstream and social) media have somehow turned this into a triumph for India as a whole that we must all idolise and this sort of uncritical, slavishly money-worshipping discourse boggles my mind!

        • In India, with many celebrities getting married, it can officially be called the wedding season. Social media is flooded with the Big Fat Indian Wedding pictures and it’s maddening. Looking at these pictures, it’s a given that people have no problem in spending all their hard-earned money into a 4-day-affair to entertain their guests. So, are these grand weddings and the hype around them all about the social pressure of a pompous wedding or is this just another one of the many paradoxes of India? We, on this week’s episode of ‘We The People’ ask, “Is there really a need for this extravaganza? Are the simple ‘private weddings’ too old school? Or is this cattle race now considered as ‘following the trend’?”

          Like

        • I was not specifically referring to you of course, but I am put off by the concerted attack on twitter last night. Anyway, my apologies for any unintended slight.

But, I reiterate, social media has a lot that is terrible. A lot of talk on twitter and elsewhere too is plain trashing and trolling..

The Ambanis have become closely linked with film industry in Mu bhai. Aamir- Kiran son Azad, SRK- Gauri’s son Abram, the Bachchan- Rai beti Aaradhya and many more bachche attend the Ambani school run by Neeta Ambani. Aamir’s Satyamev Jayate offspring Paani Foundation has money supplied in part by Reliance ( one of more than half a dozen sponsors). Aamir is doing a good job with Paani, effective drought management. He cannot just ignore his ngo benefactor’s big shindig.

Have also read long back that Aamir’s friendship with Neeta goes back to her pre marriage college days when she was friends with his sister. So…I would rather not be judgemental n any of these people. They have their own reasons and old connections.

Read st one Hindi site, over a fortnight back, that Aamir was all by himself in Portugal, with six scripts in hand, that he had no intention of attending any wedding. But obviously he made it back in time for Ambani family wedding. His choice.

As Saif wasn’t informed about this, he got a wind of it and was very upset with the studio. He had a conversation with the studio and told him that it was very unprofessional of them to have conversations with another actor behind his back. As the studio gave excuses, apparently a filmmaker’s name popped up as studio said it was the director-producer who told them to reach out to Abhishek. The filmmaker denied having any such conversations and fired back at the studio stating why his name was dragged into this mess.

Meanwhile, Pawan Kripalani, who was patiently waiting for an update, felt that the studio and others weren’t treating his project properly. He apparently decided to step back after too much suffering.

As feared/expected, this Peter Jackson-produced post-apocalyptic fantasy adventure couldn’t break out amid the higher-profile releases. It’s an enjoyable three-star fantasy flick, one with superb visuals and enough character work to remind you of the first Star Wars, but that’s not enough to survive in 2018. And so the $100 million-budgeted flick, which earned $25m overseas heading into the weekend, made just $2.82m for what should be an $8m opening weekend. I mourn its failure but am glad that the movie is mostly a self-contained actioner. It appears that there will be no dawn of young adult fantasy franchises.

  40. Marcus: Here’s an interview of Yash the actor from KGF. I am not a big fan of Kannada movies but he’s one of the better actors around with a firm head on his shoulders. Since you are in Bangalore, you can catch it for sure:

I have to say, though this is a big leap for Kannada cinema, this is not a big leap for cinema in general. There are stylistic flourishes galore here, but I hope it matches up to the script and story-telling. Unless the latter two match up, doesn’t matter whatever era you try to reproduce; ’70s or ’80s.

Frankly, the trailer gave me the vibe of a poor man’s AGNEEPATH: Right from shoe-shining boy to the scenes to, well.. everything..

The scale is bigger; hopefully it turns out big and gets a hit status..

    • Btw, Mule might still be a decent watch. This is from Forbes:

      **************

Warner Bros. released Clint Eastwood’s latest thriller, The Mule, into 2,588 theaters. The mixed-reviewed true-life tale about an old(er) man who ends up working as a drug courier, opened with a solid $5.85 million on Friday. Sans inflation, that’s Eastwood’s second-biggest opening day an actor (Space Cowboys opened with $5.3m in 2000 while the wide release debut of Gran Torino earned $9.6m in 2009), with the obvious caveat being that he was in his prime as a movie star decades prior before even a time when a well-received movie could easily leg it to $100m domestic from a $15m launch. As was the case with In the Line of Fire and Unforgiven in the early 1990s.

Adjusted for inflation, the $10 million opening of Every Which Way But Lose 40 years ago next weekend would be around $41m. If The Mule can top $18.1m for the weekend, it’ll best Space Cowboys as Eastwood’s second-biggest debut weekend ever as an actor behind Gran Torino’s $29m wide launch. It’ll also be his fourth-biggest as a director behind Gran Torino ($29m in 2009), Sully ($35m in 2016) and the wide release debut of American Sniper ($89m in 2015). We’re in the heart of the holiday season, so WB is hoping, not without reason, that this R-rated flick will play to adults who have little interest in the kid-targeted fantasies coming down the pike.

  42. Here’s something for the box-office enthusiasts…

Vishek Chauhan is extremely anxious about the Christmas break. The last week of December is the most lucrative period for the Indian film industry, he says. Chauhan owns a cinema in Bihar’s Purnia district and manages about seven across the state. This is generally the time the entire country, in holiday mode, flocks to cinemas.

Two movies are due for release around this time: Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma-starrer Zero on December 21, and Ranveer Singh and Sara Ali Khan’s Simmba on ..

In the business chain of producer-distributor-exhibitor, the single-screen cinema owners are often caught in a squeeze. The only irony here is that this vanity fuelled mad scramble to get more and more screens and shows is leaving the industry with fewer single-screens than ever before.

According to the latest EY report, there’s been a 30% drop in the number of single screens in India since 2009. Coincidentally, 2009 was the year that opening figures began to gain prominence, with 3 Idio ..

Whether it is An Jo’s question or Naveen’s comment on a TV commercial….looks like social media cannot take things light. Every issue has to be stonewashed to death. The Aamir tv commercial is simply a bit of harmless exaggeration, like many ads.

        • It was a snarky comment. It is like saying Marcus and Master are same. Master also said that Marcus purposefully kept a similar sounding blog name for himself to confuse the bloggers here.
The problem arises when one does not follow all the comments and remember who said what and distinguish between two people. It is another thing if one changes the name frequently. If you stick to a particular name for a long time, then the confusion wont arise. To tell the truth, it is very difficult for me to associate AnJo name to a man for a long time. Angelina Jolie is imprinted strongly in my mind and many others were also under the impression that AnJo is a female and Anjo himself had to clarify many times that he is he, not she. Some were snarky like Alex. Alex also called MSDhoni(Livewire) as she. But Livewire never clarified like Anjo did.

The reason I got confused was my mistake of getting confused between Latha and Lalitha. LS first name is Lalitha; not Latha. I got that confusion cleared. But before I could acknowledge that, terrific movie-plots have been written here!

In a way, this reveals who has any ounce of patience and who is open to, well, different points of view!

Same thing with the members on BR’s blog. A harmless joke about Karan Johar getting undue attention on BR’s blog got tagged as a homophobic and before I knew, the ‘liberal’ folks were out with daggers issuing me character certificates!! I tried to explain once; but once I realized the ganged-up nature of some of the members, I just left it at that. I can go on and on, but again, it would serve no purpose at all. The same thing happened when I commented on Aishwarya’s disgusting poetess role in ADHM and called out Johar’s fake love toward Urdu and shaayari..

I would rather learn something on a blog, and if possible, contribute something..

Whether in life or on the net, I just stop interacting with folks who don’t want to listen to an opinion different from theirs..

On the Madhuri contest, the reason I brought in Manisha Koirala was pretty logical. At some point or the other, there was the press and some folks during ’90s that were hallucinating that Juhi and Manisha were over-taking Mads thanks to DARR and 1942/Bombay. Mads then hit it out of the park with HAHK and silenced everyone. And again, 1942 was a film meant for Madhuri, not Manisha. 1942 is a film Isn’t this a part of logical discussions, especially since 1942 is considered a land-mark in Manisha’s career! Zanjeer landed up for Amitabh after famous actors rejected it! YOu think that doesn’t call for a discussion! Instead, Sanjana went on asking who brought up Manisha first?? I provided the reasons, but they fell on blind eyes/deaf ears.

I am again falling prey to the need of explaining myself…and flooding someone else’s blog space. A guest, should know his or her space…

Quite risky and mystifying considering the bad word of mouth from India. And Aamir is there on visit to a film festival plus a trip through six cities. I can understand him being loyal towards his film, believing in it, not disowning it, but so much publicity for a badly received film….🤔😏

Its EStar – same distributor as Dangal and SS and this promo tour is v similarly planned like the one before.

The all-india cume will be around 400 cr; but it neither justifies the 550 cr budget nor the astronomically high distribution prices. It was definitely expected to do a lot more than just Dangal’s total in India.

Even the coveted 200 cr figure in hindi will also be missed. Add Padman’s only 5m opening in China and its expected fold up below 10m mark (Toilet Hero did 13-14m earlier this year). Not surprised that our resident Akshay fan is frustrated today.

  56. The thing is, the gujarati who was bargaining was irritating than the actor aamir. If given a sane character, aamir would have delivered the dialogues in a saner manner. I dont have problem if some dont like it. But calling it extreme hamming is another thing.
Same way we feel Prem chopra and Gulshan Grover are villainous when they are merely enacting such scenes. In that respect aamir is irritating.

    • So many ads present exaggerated versions of real life situations. Those underwear ads did it all the time as did products like deo sprays. Aamir did not ham,but did his Guju guy the way it was conceived. To say he was hamming is incorrect. One might as well say that Anushka hammed her way through her Gujuben character in Jab Harry Met Sally. In any ad, the director and the actors concerned obviously need to believe in the exaggeration.

The hamming comment reveals a mindset, probably the current mood against the actor. It’s like , ‘ hit him when he is down’.

  66. I joined film industry for money: Akshay Kumar

Actor Akshay Kumar says he was drawn to the film industry because it offered a lot of money for someone who was struggling back then.

The actor started out his film career primarily as an action hero before blooming into an all-round star. “I did a lot of action films earlier because I knew nothing else. For 11-13 years, I did only action. I did Thai boxing in Bangkok for five years. Back then I had made up my mind that I’ll come to Mumbai and open a martial arts school.

“Honestly, the only thing which brought me to the industry was only money. I just came here to earn money,” he said. Akshay said he used to make Rs 5,000 per month teaching martial arts but once earned Rs 21,000 simply by posing as a model and it changed his perspective.

“I used to get paid Rs 5,000 a month when I used to teach martial arts. Once someone asked me to do modelling. I tried modelling for a furniture showroom. There was a model and we both posed and I got Rs 21,000 within two hours!

“I thought what better place to be than here! I thought now I’ll do modelling and then eventually entered films,” he said speaking at the World Toilet Summit. He is the Harpic Sanitation Ambassador. Akshay started his career as an action hero but became a star in comedy and romantic genre before switching to varied roles and socially relevant stories.

“I must have done about 135-140 films where most of my initial films were only action. No producer or director would even look at me thinking ‘He won’t be able to act so just give him action,’ I did that then gradually shifted to comedy and then romantic films,” he said.

The actor believes commercial movies with social messages have a wider reach than documentaries.

“I personally believe there is no point making documentary films. I’ve seen several times in many villages, sorry to say, but nobody reacts to that. People like to see a commercial film. I consider myself lucky who got an opportunity to do commercial cinema and give people a social message in a very different way,” he added.

Festival director Anupama Chopra said that she hoped that the decision would lead to an environment that is “constructive, inclusive and just”. While this is a welcome move, our focus should be not only on those accused of inappropriate behaviour but also on filmmakers who churn out sexist films that influence such behaviour.

Yet, in India, we ignore or simply don’t accept the impact of storytelling on social behaviour. Last year, IBM India conducted a research study analysing gender stereotypes in 4,000 Bollywood movies released between 1970 and 2017. Among these, the researchers identified only 30 movies where these stereotypes were broken. While filmmakers are attempting to break this mould, they are still few and far between.

  94. However, the crowned king of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan is still struggling to create a niche in the new era of filmmaking.

With back to back failures, ranging from ‘Raees’, ‘Dilwale’, ‘Fan’ to ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ (with just Rs 150 crore in worldwide grosses) — he has been failing to find his groove at the box office. This subdued business makes it worrying for SRK’s backers and fans, given his decades-long rule in the Hindi film industry.

Movie clashes haven’t worked in Shah Rukh’s favour lately. Be it ‘Dilwale’ which clashed with ‘Bajirao Mastani’ or ‘Raees’ which clashed with ‘Kaabil’, the box office collection was affected drastically. And this time, the unwelcoming clash is with Rohit Shetty’s ‘Simmba’. Though the movie is releasing a week after Zero, the trade analysts believe that the number of screens in the second week will directly depend on the box office collection of the first week. Therefore, Zero needs to do business in its first week; else screens will be given to Ranveer Singh starrer ‘Simmba’. As the pressure builds, here’s anticipating the thumping return of our ‘Hero’!

    • Here’s why the success of Zero is key for Shah Rukh Khan

What makes the success of Zero so crucial is the downfall of Shah Rukh’s films after 2014 when he delivered his last super hit film, Happy New Year. After that, neither Dilwale — that brought the successful SRK-Kajol jodi back on the big screen — nor Jab Harry met Sejal could do much to impress the audience.

In the last few years, Khan has been either advised to reinvent himself, choose better subjects or wait for a couple of years to regain his footing in the film industry.

Apart from mediocre scripts that is impacting his career, according to trade experts; big investments are also a matter of concern. Shah Rukh had put in a lot of money for 2011 release Ra.One and Zero too is an expensive film. Produced by Colour Yellow Productions (founded by Aanand L Rai) and Red Chillies Entertainment (founded by Shah Rukh Khan and wife Gauri), Zero has been made at a budget of Rs 200 crore.

At a time when Aamir’s Dangal broke records in the overseas market, especially in China where the movie was a roaring success, Salman Khan has moved mountains with films like Sultan and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and Akshay Kumar has raced ahead with an average of two-three movies a year, King Khan needs a blockbuster to fight off the competition.

This year, Shah Rukh Khan was out of top 10 rank in the Forbes’ India highest earning celebrity list. With no release during the period under review, Khan slipped from his number two position to No 13 after raking in Rs 56 crore this year.

      • Srk’s last 2 genuine big hits were rnbdj and oso – both a decade back. He did have a CE in between, but even then its collections were not that great to make Red Chillies stop over-reporting. He had tried the oso kind of formula in hny and dilwale with shetty, but neither really worked (hny maybe a technical hit but it actually tanked rather badly after a bumper opening). Now he is trying rnbdj (with less vertical height but lots of excess budget) with rai. The trailers are as bogus as it gets. Given its 200 cr landing cost and high distribution prices, it desperately needs 30 cr day one and 250 cr total to give him that much needed comeback hit at box office.

I’m pretty sure that both OSO and CE were the highest grosser of all time (or 2nd) for a brief period. Take the ratio between the highest grosser after those films and OSO/CE. So Dhoom 3: CE (260:210) and Ghajini: OSO/Rab ne (115: 78 or 84). CE did better relatively compared to the other 2.

        • CE needed around 280 cr to be in the top grosser bracket in 2013. D3 wud have done 300 cr if it was a good film, such was the market potential in 2013. RNBDJ was a bit below OSO, while OSO was really big. Ghajini was a different monster altogether and not comparable to D3’s box office.

Anyways, Zero will need 250+ cr to be certified as a BO Hit. Good Luck!

“I would like to say that I take full responsibility for Thugs Of Hindostan not working with the audience. I think we went wrong. I would like to take full responsibility for that. You can be sure we tried our level best,” he had earlier said.

Now, Katrina Kaif has also addressed the elephant in the room. She says she is hurt but disappointment is what wakes you up.
“I know Aamir has spoken on the matter and it has really hurt deeply and personally. Disappointment is always good as it wakes you up little bit again. In case of ‘Thugs…’ it was not for lack of trying, something just went wrong in case of ‘Thugs of Hindostan’. You need to have guts and urge to try things and be prepared it may or may not work,” she was quoted as saying by PTI.

      • Very easy to term Aamir a hypocrite. But there is something called belief in your film — and Aamir has always worked sincerely and with full effort, to be part of a good worthy film. A small section of Indian audience has accepted TOH despite its negatives. Aamir is happy with this small bit of approval. And that has given him the hope that a pruned and sharper film may work in China. This is my belief. Also, the distributors and producer — they would be pushing Aamir to do his part in China. He has this huge fan base in China, along with his niche base in India. My guess is Aamir hopes that TOH will work to an extent, do decently. And all his fans worldwide are hoping for this acceptance. Private DMs on twitter are brimming with this hope for their beleaguered favourite.

No Aamir is NOT a hypocrite. He works hard to deliver, accepts responsibility for a while team, tries his best to rectify matters to the extent possible.

Khan said, “There are people who have liked the film and we are thankful to them, but they are in a minority. Most people didn’t like our film — we are aware of that.”

*Wrong. Aamir is not happy at all. Please read his statement above. He is thankful to those minority few that’s all*

LS – And that has given him the hope that a pruned and sharper film may work in China. This is my belief.

One is free to have belief but it is not a fact.

Marcus – He apologized to only those indians who have seen the film but did not like it

As always a clear lack of understanding. Aamir’s comment, which is primarily an apology is for everyone who was waiting to watch the movie, would have watch if review was good, and all those who watched.

          =======

He said, “I want to apologise to my audience also as this time I wasn’t able to entertain them. I know people came to theatres with a lot of expectations, but they didn’t enjoy the film.”

“Audience is free to say what they feel about the film. What I can say is that we certainly tried our level best and I am feeling really bad that we didn’t succeed in entertaining the audience. So, next time we will try harder.”

He took note of indian response and edited out a 2 hr chinese cut himself. Now he is promoting it. This is called taking responsibility of own’s work, which unfortunately bollywood stars dont understand. Specifically guys like akshay or srk or their troll fans. Aamir did not edit anything. Yash Raj Films, the makers, have edited the chinese version. Please read below –

          Please read below-

          ========
According to reports, the epic action-adventure will release in China next month and the makers are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that the film makes big bucks in the East Asian country.

A report by Bollywood Hungama claims that to suit the needs of the Chinese audience, the roles of Amitabh Bachchan and Fatima Sana Shaikh have been cut short in the Chinese version of Thugs of Hindostan. On the other hand, Aamir’s screen time in the film has been lengthened dramatically to make his character look meatier and more prominent. The makers, in fact, have gone to the extent of including certain deleted scenes in the Chinese version that did not feature in the original.

“Fatima, as the central point of drama, did not really work at the box-office, hence the decision to change that. And with Aamir’s role being enhanced, it will be even easier for the makers to edit the film accordingly,” a source has been quoted in the report as saying.

The report also claims that the Chinese version of Thugs of Hindostan will be 30-40 minutes shorter than the domestic version. Its total run time is expected to be a little over two hours.

  99. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol to reunite for Hindi Medium 2?
ByBollywood Hungama News NetworkDec 17, 2018 – 2:39 pm IST

Every time Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol have come together, they have created magic on big screen. Though their last outing Dilwale wasn’t a huge hit, their undeniable chemistry was absolutely appreciated. But, it seems like they are indeed planning to come together and that too for Hindi Medium 2 alongside Irrfan Khan.

As per reports in a leading daily, Dinesh Vijan is reportedly in talks with DDLJ couple Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol for the Hindi Medium sequel. Irrfan Khan will be reprising his role of Raj Batra in the film and the story will be set in the United States. Not only that, it seems like SRK and Kajol reportedly have had initial script readings as well. It would be pretty interesting to see the onscreen coup.

As it is known already that Hindi Medium director Saket Choudhary won’t be directing the sequel. Instead, Homi Adajani, who has directed Cocktail and Finding Fanny for Dinesh Vijan, will be taking the director’s batton.

  101. As of this moment, Aquaman has earned $196 million after 11 days in China, meaning it’ll top $200m today. Including the $2.9m in domestic sneak previews from the Atom Tickets/Amazon Prime sneak preview (more than double the $1.3m that Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle earned last year via the same gimmick) and opening week overseas cume, the DC Films flick has earned around $276m worldwide thus far. Give or take variables and the territories in which it opens over the next few days, it should pass $300m worldwide tomorrow or very early Wednesday. So now we see how it handles some competition, both in China (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse played very well to sneak preview audiences over the weekend and opens there on Friday) and around the world.

The DC Films flick is the biggest fish in the sea now, but it’ll face off against Mary Poppins Returns (which opens in North America tomorrow night) and Bumblebee which opens Thursday night). All three films are betting that the leggy Christmas/New Years season will give them plenty of space to gobble up cash. Next month is a little light until M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass on January 18, so we won’t see a repeat of 2009. If you recall, the year-end 2008 releases (Bedtime Stories, Yes Man, Seven Pounds, Marley and Me) crashed headfirst into an uncommonly strong January slate (Gran Torino, Taken, Paul Blart: Mall Cop). We can expect January of 2019 to be dominated by the December of 2018 releases.

  103. Is Bollywood losing its sheen in China?
Indian film disappointments seem to be increasingly common in China this year.

Indian films slowly seem to be losing shine at the China box office, a market so far springing up one blockbuster after another. Akshay Kumar’s biographical drama Padman released last week, has registered an unimpressive total of $3.55 million (Rs. 25.54 crore). The film that also features Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte had made Rs. 78.22 crore upon its release in India earlier this year. Trade website Box Office India pointed out that at $1.75 million, the opening numbers of the R.Balki directed film were even lower than Kumar’s last release in China Toilet: Ek Prem Katha that had collected $2.25 million.

“Pad Man registers a low start in China. Opening day numbers are much lower than Toilet: Ek Prem Katha which opened in June 2018. The two-day total remains on the lower side,” tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

Indian film disappointments seem to be increasingly common in China this year. A few weeks ago, Sony Pictures Entertainment India’s comedy drama 102 Not Out had made $3.56 million (Rs 25.06 crore) in the neighbouring country. India’s blockbuster war epic Baahubali 2: The Conclusion too had only managed about $11.9 million (Rs 80 crore). Some of these may be decent numbers in themselves but unimpressive considering the benchmark traditionally set by Bollywood films in China.

To be sure, the success story there, so far, has been majorly driven by Aamir Khan-starrers. While his sports drama Dangal, currently the highest-grossing Indian film in China, had made close to Rs 1,200 crore, his musical production Secret Superstar earned around Rs 760 crore. Other superhits include PK (Rs 123 crore) and 3 Idiots (Rs 16 crore), which Khan had promoted in the country personally.

The massive screen count is an important factor for Indian films to have managed such impressive theatrical returns in China, according to industry experts. The country almost quadrupled its screen count in the last few years, from around 10,000. India, on the other hand, works with 9,000-odd cinemas divided between single screens and multiplexes.

The second big factor contributing to the sky-high collections is the difference in ticket rates. The average ticket price in China is $12 compared with India’s $1.5. But most importantly, Indian stories with their strong emotional chord have resonated with Chinese audiences, who are used to either Hollywood spectacles or Chinese mythologies and fantasies. Be it Secret Superstar about a young aspiring female singer fighting a patriarchal system or Hindi Medium centered on issues of education and parenting.

To be sure, all hopes are now pinned on Yash Raj Films’ action adventure Thugs of Hindostan that is releasing in China on 28 December.

Now the film has entered on weekdays again and with a drop of 26% than 2nd Friday, minted the amount of 1.85 crores on 2nd Monday.

With this, the total collection of RSVP Movies & Guy in the Sky Pictures’ production after 11 days has become 56.06 crores nett at the domestic box office. Now the film has entered on weekdays again and with a usual drop in footfalls, it minted the amount of 0.90 crore on 3rd Monday.

After 19 days, the total collection of its Hindi version has become 185.15 crores at the domestic box office with 139.75 crores in the first week and 38 crores in the second. Neel set the story in the 1970s because he is a huge admirer of films from that decade. “I wanted to recreate the 1970s on the big screen,” he said. “I’m a big fan of that era of Hindi cinema, especially of Amitabh Bachchan and his films. This was the era when action as a genre took off in Hindi cinema. It was our Western in a sense. I love that genre and wanted to make something similar. I’ve grown up watching their movies on VHS tapes. So a lot of the inspiration comes from there.”

After analysing the Hindi action films of the ’70s, Neel found one common element across productions: gold. “Gold smuggling, especially,” Neel said. “Now, KGF was a place I had visited earlier and I remember being fascinated by it. So, I put two and two together and I made four.”

The script of KGF came to Yash at just the right time in his career, he told Scroll.in. “Our goal was to make an astounding film, one that takes root in the Kannada industry and is showcased to the world,” Yash said. “I had seen Ugramm when it came out in 2014 and remember being quite impressed by it. So, when I heard that Prashant has a new script, I was interested. I heard the story and was immediately convinced that this was the big film that we were waiting to make.”

The story is different in Hyderabad,Andhra Pradesh and also Kerala.

I m more into watching how Spider-verse does in China this weekend and the big battle @US domestic market between 3 biggies. Also how KGF does in India. If highest ww gross is 75 cr, then a 100 cr movie is a big deal for Kannada film industry! Its a lot more risky than investing 100 cr in Manikarnika. Kangana has delivered 150 cr TWMR before this (although makers will be a happy lot IF Manikarnika manages to 100 cr nett).

  109. Kannada film ‘KGF’ dreams big: ‘Cinema is becoming pan-Indian and international’

Director Prashant Neel and lead actor Yash tell ‘Scroll.in’ about their ambition to reach audiences across the country.

After directing the action drama Ugramm in 2014, Kannada filmmaker Prashant Neel was looking for a producer for his new script, set against the backdrop of the gold mines of Kolar in Karnataka in the 1970s. Neel found a producer in Vijay Kiragandur’s Hombale Films, but what he didn’t anticipate was that over the course of the next four years, his script would be transformed into a big-budget two-part film, pitched as a Baahubali-style franchise and released in languages other than Kannada.

Starring Yash, Srinidhi, B Suresh and Achyuth Kumar, KGF (Kolar Gold Fields) will hit the screens on December 21 in Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. The film is being released on the same day as Aanand L Rai’s Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Zero in Hindi and Vijay Sethupathi’s Seethakathi in Tamil. The Hindi version is being presented by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment.

“I did not think I should be making something of this scale as my second movie,” Neel told Scroll.in during an interview in Bengaluru. “But when my producer heard the one-line plot idea that I had for the film, he and his team really liked it and didn’t care about how much money they were going to put in the film. Then Yash, who also liked the script, came on board and together, they encouraged me to dream bigger and bigger.”

The trailer introduces us to Rocky (Yash), whose fortunes are closely linked to the discovery of the gold mine in Kolar. KGF is pure fiction, the makers of the film have stated, and has nothing to do with the real mines, which were shut down in 2001.

KGF is actually a “simple” story of a mother and her son, Neel said. “A dying mother tells her son that it doesn’t matter how her son leads his life as long as he ensures that when he dies, he is a rich man,” Neel said. “I have always believed that a hero is made in his childhood. It is his childhood that determines who he becomes. Even in this film, the central character’s destiny is sealed in that wish expressed by his dying mother. Everything he does, good or bad, is done to achieve that goal.”

Yash made his debut with a small role in Priya Hassan’s Jambada Hudugi (2007). Over the years, he has starred in a combination of romantic and action roles: Moggina Manasu (2008), Rocky (2008), Modalasala (2010), Googly (2013), Mr and Mrs Ramachari (2014) and Masterpiece (2016). KGF comes two years after Yash’s previous release, Mahesh Rao’s Santhu Straight Forward (2016).

“I was amazed that an actor like him, one who is at the height of his powers in the Kannada film industry, said yes to a time-taking project like this,” Neel said. “He is doing so well and yet, he decided to set aside two years for one project without knowing whether it would work or not. That’s a fantastic thing.”

KGF began as a Kannada-only film when it first went on the floors. “We shot for 11 days and I showed the rushes to Yash and the producer and that’s when they started dreaming bigger,” Neel said. “This was also the time when Baahubali’s second instalment had released. It had become clear that people do accept movies from other languages if the scale is big and they like the concept. Both Yash and the producer told me not to scale down anything, just make what’s in your head.”

It was then decided that KGF would be pitched as a dubbed pan-Indian film. “This is what is required for the Kannada industry,” Yash said. “We must change with the times. We are living in a time when cinema is becoming pan-Indian and international. Every industry has to be in this game and this film is marking such a step for Kannada.”

Audience tastes have moved from “What your story is” to “How is your story being told,” Neel added.

“We have to look at creating an experience for the audience in theatres, make them laugh, cry or get scared together, but on a bigger scale and platform,” he said. “Else, you’re not going to get people to come to theatres, especially with Netflix and Amazon around.”

  110. It’s no secret that the four upcoming Avatar sequels, slated for 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025 releases, are being made as standalone stories. Both producer Jon Landau and director James Cameron have said, however, that the films will also form a connected epic saga. When chatting to Landau about his latest film, Alita: Battle Angel – due out next year – we pumped him for a bit more information about the groundbreaking science-fiction franchise.

Landau reiterated that each of the Avatar sequels is “a whole unto itself”, revealing that it was this that “took us the time in writing the scripts … to make sure that each of the stories completes its own saga.” When looked at as a whole, he says, you have a greater sense of the arc across the stories.

“The analogy that I would make is Episodes IV, V and VI of Star Wars,” he says. “You look at Star Wars, and that movie was a standalone great movie. You look at Return of the Jedi, a standalone. But when you sit back and you’ve now watched all three of those, you get a greater sense of the relationships between the characters and that’s what Jim [Cameron] has really done on the sequels.”

  113. At a time when producers think twice before investing heavily in films headlined by female actors, makers of Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi — Kamal Jain and Zee Studios — have set a precedent. Touted to be made on a budget of `100 crore, Jain claims the Kangana ranaut starrer is the most expensive Bollywood film to be led by a female star.

“It is a period film, so there was no scope of cutting corners. We invested in every department judiciously. Kangana was always keen to do a film based on Rani Laxmibai, so when we approached her, she lapped it up,” says Jain. The industry may be male-dominated, but the producer says that female actors have proved that they too can carry a film on their petite but able shoulders. “There has been a positive change in the industry. Movies with actresses in focus have done big numbers. We are hoping to take that change to the next step. Why should a female-oriented film need to compromise on budget? Also, Kangana’s star power is unquestionable.”

Given the budget of the film, one wonders if the biopic would have benefited from a solo release. After all, January 25 is turning out to be a crowded window with Hrithik Roshan’s Super 30 and Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Thackeray releasing alongside. “I don’t think Super 30 is releasing on that day, and the other movies are different from ours. We are confident of what we have made. January 26 is an ideal date for a patriotic film like ours. Moreover, it is an extended weekend, so we all stand a chance to do business.”

Asserting that they can’t be “myopic” when it comes to their labour of love, Jain says they didn’t spare any expenses. “From the costumes to the set, we had to reflect the grandeur of the era. We also got Nick Powell [action director] who’s the best in the business.”

  114. 2018 Report Card:

For most people associated with the film community in Hollywood, 2018 has been especially satisfying for two reasons. First, it appears that the industry is headed for a record year from a revenue standpoint and, for the first time in several years, attendance is also on the rise. Secondly, it has extinguished, at least for the moment, all the doomsday, sky-is-falling articles proclaiming the death of the theatrical movie-going experience.

This coming weekend will be, in effect, the last boat out for wide avail releases so it’s probably as good of a time as any to get the grade books out, fire up the red pens, and bestow the yearly studio report cards. Part One will look at the six major studios, Part Two will look at the smaller, independent studios. Box office figures are through December 14 and are courtesy of Box Office Mojo and Comscore.

Disney (Domestic A-, International A-) Ho hum, another year and another runaway market share victory for the Mouse House. The majority of the studio’s box office haul came from three films, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Incredibles 2, which combined amassed a staggering $1.98 billion domestic and $2.64 billion internationally. To put it in perspective, if the company had only released those three films they still would have finished first in market share. Yet despite this giddiness there may be some cracks developing in the Disney armor. Both A Wrinkle In Time and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms were disappointments both home and away and Solo: A Star Wars Story was the first Star Wars entry that ended up being mainstream media fodder for all the wrong reasons when it couldn’t top $400 million worldwide. Having said all that, 2019 looks like an embarrassment of riches with Captain Marvel, new episodes in the Avengers and Star Wars franchises and, of course, The Lion King. Another year on the box office throne is all but assured.

Universal (Domestic B+, International A) The company on the hill has made a slow but steady climb back up the market share charts over the past few years and thanks to five sequels-reboots, each of which topped the $100 million level Stateside, they will challenge Warners for the place position this year. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was a giant overseas success ($888 million) and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Fifty Shades Freed, Skyscraper and Pacific Rim Uprising all earned at least 70% of their respective global box office totals from overseas markets. On the domestic front Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch had no problem topping $200 million ($223 million to be exact) despite a glut of other family films in the marketplace and Halloween laid claim to the second highest October opening ever en route to $159 million in North America, though Damien Chazelle’s First Man never got off the launching pad.

Warners (Domestic B, International A-) If market share means anything to Warners then it’s probably praying to the Aquaman Gods for a hefty enough opening and Christmas week to slip past Universal and into second place by the time the crowds assemble in Times Square. Either way it’s been a solid though unspectacular year for Warner Brothers. A Star Is Born will crack the $200 million plateau, albeit just barely, and will end up being the studio’s highest grossing domestic release of the year. If you had told most industry experts at the start of 2018 that the Bradley Cooper directed musical drama along with Crazy Rich Asians would each easily out-gross the new Fantastic Beasts entry and the Steven Spielberg-directed Ready Player One you’d probably be met with blank stares. It’s a good thing Meg turned out to be such a surprise hit as that offsets the disappointments that were Tag, Life of the Party and Teen Titans Go! To The Movies. Internationally, the studio enjoyed a banner year with ten titles grossing north of $130 million, led by Ready Player One’s $445 million.

Sony (Domestic B, International B+) It’s easy to look at the studio’s highest grossing film of the year being a 2017 holdover (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) as faint praise but a look below the surface shows the studio had four other $100 million films on the domestic front and a combined $1 billion internationally from just two films, Venom and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. Yes there were failures such as The Girl In The Spider’s Web, The Front Runner and an ill-advised Superfly remake, but the studio ended up finishing with its highest domestic total since 2012 when it claimed the top spot. And the year is ending on a high note with the critical and commercial hit, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

Fox (Domestic C-, International B-) Maybe the sale to Disney couldn’t have come at a better time. The studio that perennially battles for a medal position on the market share podium is finishing well out of the money in 2018, with a domestic share that is below 10% for the first time since 2013. Your Fun Fox Fact To Know and Tell is that only two Fox films that were released during calendar year 2018 grossed over $58 million (Deadpool 2 and Bohemian Rhapsody). It’s a long way from there to Maze Runner: The Death Cure. It will be interesting to see what Disney does with smaller films in the Fox pipeline (think films like The Darkest Minds, The Hate U Give and Super Troopers 2) once films like these become property of Disney. The common wisdom is they either end up as streaming only content on Disney’s yet-to-be-introduced platform or they get put into turnaround.

Paramount (Domestic C, International C) There was a time this year that many in the industry were proclaiming a return to form for Paramount after the rousing success that was A Quiet Place ($188 million domestic), a solid, mid-range hit with Book Club ($68 million), and the massively successful Mission: Impossible – Fallout ($790 global). Sadly, that glee was short lived as films such as Overlord ($21 million) and Instant Family (a disappointing $54 million through mid-December) brought the studio back to earth. Paramount has managed to move up into the 6th position in market share but is toppling Lionsgate really something to trumpet at the next shareholders meeting for a studio with the rich history of Paramount?

India’s entry for the Foreign Language Film Category, Village Rockstars is out of the Oscar race, as is Iram Haq’s Norwegian drama What Will People Say, starring Indian actors Adil Hussain and Ekavali Khanna.

Nominations for the 91st Oscars will be announced on January 22, 2019, over a month ahead of the Oscars ceremony which is slated to be held on February 24, 2019.

        • It is nominated for Documentary Short Subject category. Now if Padman could be nominated in that category, only then the short film would have beaten it.

In fact, having watched Padman, it is a decent film. Not a classic by any means. It could have been better. But it is worth a watch.

On another note, this short film does sound interesting. The concept sounds good on paper at least.

TOH may succeed in Chinain a limited way among fans. I wish the promotion could have been less flashy, considering the film bombed in India. But it is their prerogative. Team TOH has every right to advertise their film. What baffles me is Naveen’s nitpicking of Aamir’s apology, terming you and me liars who have misinterpreted Aamir…WHY this trolling of a star who has had a poor release? Aren’t you guys satisfied enough with it’s failure? And trolling fans who never bother to speak ill of other’s favourites?

“The message was spread only among a small group of students through social media. The school only knew about it when students talked about the event hours before it was about to take place,” the Global Times quoted an employee of the varsity as saying.

However, the Weibo account that promotes Khan’s films announced the school had cancelled the event “unilaterally” as the “the students were overly enthusiastic”.

Many students said they waited outside the event site for over an hour.

The fan meet was soon relocated to a Four Seasons hotel not far from the campus and ended at around 11 pm on Monday night.

I had numbers and for sure it was not a 80Cr+ grosser and it was 78Cr or whatever (what BOI has today). In the end Dhoom 2 was still ahead of OSO overall with RNBDJ and Ghajini going ahead in 2008. Briefly SIK, RNBDJ held opening week records before Ghajini.
CE of course broke 3 Idiots LT records but the margin varies depending on BOI or producer. It’s pipped it on BOI but producers have it 20Cr+ ahead. Of course within months Dhoom 3 broke this record. CE could have made a bit more as OUATIM2 gave it competition for a week or so after 1 week. I think it had an early release on Thursday so 8 days before competition and it did some 135Crish and went over 200Cr from there. Compared to HNY it’s a clean hit and if you follow it’s 3rd week run and beyond it trended well enough. It basically caught up some of it’s lost business due to competition, only a film that works does this.

    Like

    • D2, OSO, RNBDJ were all in the same range – 80 cr or so, give or take a couple of crores. CE was not in D3 range. Producers were over-reporting and gave some ridiculous 230 cr number or whatever. BOI said it did 200 cr, but it was obvious that they were manipulating too to get to that target. It was a prestige issue after downsizing ETT. ETT was perhaps closer to 3I’s 200 cr than CE actually was. Anyways, the film that out-grossed 3I was D3, and it was by a margin. If D3 was universally liked, it wud have done 325 cr. The market potential was there as shown by PK just one year later.

      Like

      • You are proving my point. CE was not in D3 range, and none of those 3 films were in the range of Ghajini. 3 Idiots showed the market potential in 2009 (a year after RNBDJ) and did almost 2.5x that film.

        Like

        • You are unable to comprehend. CE was hardly as big a hit a D2 (but D3 was in that same year CE released). SO, it was not as big as OSO/RNBDJ.

CE’s 200 cr (IF true indeed) wud be equivalent to 300-350 cr today. Ghajini wud be 400+ and 3I wud be 500-600 cr (depending on how much u want to downsize it). Just approx figures, BUT only to drill some sense regarding the BO difference between these films.

          Like

        • Lol learn some basic math. you are saying Ghajini today is 400 and 3 Idiots is 500-600 and I agree. What would Rab Ne be today in front of those? 250 max? Then you say CE would be 300 today. Agreed. So D3 should be maybe 400-500 and PK 500-600?

Now using your own statements, tell me which film (CE or Rab and) did better relative to the biggest grossers of its time…god I think I’ve lost brain cells trying to explain basic math to you…

If medium liked will be between 150cr to 200 crs…If turkey then will just about reach 100crs….Even if it a mega- liked as Dangal it cannot reach 300crs…as it is going to be running only around 2500 screens in second week and losing all single screens…and no movie has ever reached 300 crs without atleast 2-3 week of solo run…

      • Never say never. Otherwise BB2 or TOH at opposite spectrums wouldn’t happen. If the film has phenomenal WOM it will easily go past any Salman film. Dangal is tough. • Chennai Express in 2013 did 200Cr+ (5 WHOLE YEARS AGO) in same scenario. Just different holiday. So again it’s possible. CE recalculated BOI post gst would be 225Cr probably. Add inflation, screen inflation it’s all doable if the film is in similar range. Here IF Zero is good and Simbaa bad (read IF) then Xmas day will be big for Zero and New Year’s Day with competition will rebound back as Simbaa WOM might have killed it by then. Best outcome for Zero. Let’s not downplay possibilities here. CE clashed after 8 days, lost screens but still made 200Cr.

In fact strong WOM films can do 200Cr or close to that in 1st week itself!

Sultan, Dangal for example. Film can be at Sultan level to get to 300Cr+.

          Like

        • CE is a good example actually. It started with preview shows on a Thursday and OUATIM came one day early on Thrsday as it was a holiday. So it got only a 6 day run…And Week 3 it has if i remember Madras Express and Week 4 was Aarakshan…Just no respite and it folded for 205 crs…
This is a slightly better scenario than CE but Simba is a bigger film than anything CE encountered. Considering the inflation and time period i said the ceiling will be 250cr with CE like WOM…and CE had good WOM. You are right it can do a bit closer to 300 cr if it rebounds again in Week 3…assuming Simmba is a dud which I don’t think it will be as Shetty never makes duds…and if Simmba is good it anyways will continue to be restricted in Week 3. Anyways all this is just speculation, first and foremost Zero has to be a good movie which is not a given

          Like

        • I’ve said same in different words. Plus you add 10% for gst and you already at 275Cr. Plus I’ve been told for ages Xmas is the best holiday period?

We will eventually agree that IF
          Zero is good
          Simbaa bad
          Zero can make 300Cr…

If both are good knock off whatever from 300Cr. Maybe it gets to only 200Cr.

The reality is a strong WOM film can do 200Cr in 7 days flat. After that with bad competition expecting 100Cr+ with 1 big holiday is not impossible. Unless the hypothesis is SRK is not a major star or that YouTube views are lies.

          Like

        • I want commitment from SRK fans before release not excuses. SRK faces competition as he has had a poor run at box office. HNY, Ra1, Dilwale are fake hits. So opposition is happy to play dirty with him now as he is vulnerable. But a big historical star cannot be just written off.

          My maths is simple
          Week 1 200Cr post GST
          100Cr+ after
It’s possible is all I am saying

Absolutely Simbaa is bigger than OUATIM2 but Xmas and NY is a strong period. SRK after what 15 months. Anushka + Katrina is more than Deepika. And here we have Salman, Sridevi, and all as surprises. Rai is better than Shetty. Gimmick is here, technology is here, apparently songs are good! I want a positive spin, not some sombre 200Cr spinner and happy with 175Cr technical marketing blockbuster! Time to wake up SRK fans, December 21st is close!

          Like

        • While i agree to Marcus theory that it is harder for an actor with flops to get to a bigger total, I don’t think the opening would be a problem for Zero. This will open closer to 30cr I think than 25cr…The music has caught on and the trailor is liked. I haven’t tracked the advances for this but I wont be surprised if it is tracking a 30cr opening. And if it gets to that with WOM can get to 100 crs too. So yes i think if movie is good and Simba is dud it can get close to 300 crs. I actually forgot that there is a Christmas holiday in first week…

          Like

        • A good film with 3 major stars (lets not forget Anushka and Katrina are established female stars of today) can do 300 cr in today’s market with competition. Its like what CE did 5 yrs back. I dont buy BOI’s exact 200 cr manipulation, it was perhaps 10-15 cr less than that, but the point remains the same.

IF this was a film with a top star, we wud be talking in terms of 400 cr and whether it can beat Dangal/2.0/Baahubali1’s all india totals. For TOH we were debating the chances to beating BB2’s 500 cr hindi total!

The mere fact that srk fans are doubtful of 200 cr and not v willing to talk abt 250 cr says a lot abt srk’s current state. That Booby Singh guy at least had the balls to talk abt 350 cr!

Anyways, with india distribution price of 100-105 cr, it will be recover at 200 cr. For hit it needs 250+, with or without Simba or Jumba.

After that, unless if Simbaa too is good than Zero will suffer huge because of clash. Otherwise it was upto Zero to be good. These are post gst too. TZH did 340Cr. Zero will of course need to be very good for the best result. That’s OBVIOUS. In any case I doubt it will get to 150Cr IMO.

        • Zero will need to be more than a good film to become that elusive hit for srk. When a star is on a good run, even average to good movies can become BO blockbusters as public is in the mood. The reverse is true during a star’s bad phase or decline. Even good movies can struggle to reach high recovery targets, since public may not be willing to be kind to a declining star.

Srk fans do seem shaky 2 days before release, not a good sign for the film. For me the trailer was rocket science, and literally too!

‘Mortal Engines’ could lose $100 million after a disastrous box office opening – what went wrong?

Every year brings at least one hugely budgeted movie that doesn’t just sink at the box office, but positively plunges like a flightless turkey. It’s the kind of epic miscalculation that makes a studio re-evaluate its entire year.

For 2018, Universal/Media Rights Capital’s “Mortal Engines” has just weighed in as the biggest holiday bust – a monster of a miss. Or, as Exhibitor Relations analyst Jeff Bock told Variety: “This is a true Christmas disaster and a lump of coal for Universal.”

“Mortal Engines,” co-written by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, grossed a paltry $7.5 million in its domestic debut over the weekend, from more than 3,100 screens. That only deepened the hole for the sci-fi fantasy spectacle, which has grossed $34.8 million overseas on a reported $100 million budget – meaning that the movie could lose more than $100 million after marketing costs are factored in.

Universal had largely been buoyed this year by “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” which grossed $1.3 billion worldwide, and enjoyed good returns from “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” ($394 million worldwide), “The Grinch” ($373 million) and “Fifty Shades Freed” ($371 million).

The common denominator among all those hit films, of course, is that they are the latest entries in existing franchises.

Yet with the woefully reviewed “Mortal Engines” (a 44 average score on Metacritic; 28 percent “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes), Universal was not only banking on launching a fresh franchise. The studio also seemed to be tempting fate with so many major decisions surrounding the movie.

    First, there was the director.

Yes, Peter Jackson is attached to this project – and films he has directed, paced by his Tolkien-sprung stories, have grossed more than $6 billion worldwide. (His biggest directing hit for Universal, “King Kong,” was 13 years ago.)

But the man who helmed “Mortal Engines” is Christian Rivers, making his feature directing debut. As a veteran of Team Jackson, Rivers is better-known as an effects wizard and storyboard artist who shared a visual effects Oscar for “King Kong.”

Although it’s laudable to give Rivers a shot in the chair, the studio also signed off on “Mortal Engines” having almost no stars (Hugo Weaving being one of its biggest international names) and just as limited recognition in terms of source material.

The film is adapted from Philip Reeve’s YA book series. Set in a post-apocalyptic steampunk world (and published beginning more than a decade ago, when a steampunk trend was still ascendant), the “Mortal Engines” novels don’t have the name clout of a “Hunger Games” or “Twilight” in the United States.

Then there’s the film’s story itself. “Mortal Engines” centers on hulking metropoli on wheels – a “city-eat-city world” – yet the marketing on Rivers’s movie did little to simplify the world-building tale for potential filmgoers, let alone offer a clear commercial hook to intrigue audiences. The promotion was a misfire on the order of Disney’s “John Carter” (2012), whose murky marketing doomed a decent movie ($284 million worldwide gross on a $250 million production budget).

Lastly, Universal brazenly slotted “Mortal Engines” against a highly anticipated animated entry in a mostly beloved franchise: Spider-Man.” Sony’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” grossed a strong $35.4 million in its domestic debut.

Even if “Mortal Engines” had managed a mediocre opening weekend in North America, it quickly would have a cinematic-universe behemoth like “Aquaman” and a franchise blockbuster like “Bumblebee” to face this week.

Perhaps Universal was hoping to grab whatever it could at the holiday box office,

But the biggest takeaway is that the studio sought to launch a new sci-fi epic – a tall order to begin with – with so many factors working against its favor that the project appeared doomed even before it debuted.

Another sci-film this year, Paramount ‘s “Annihilation,” also sunk at the box office, but on “just” a $40 million budget.

By comparison, given the massive financial backing of “Mortal Engines,” followed by the disastrous opening, Universal needs to closely survey the wreckage of the year’s most spectacularly fallen kingdom.

The other day he was on stage in China, standing tall, next to Johnny Depp (who conversed happily with Aamir), Jackie Chan ( who had a jokey crazy conversation onstage with our short and sweet hero), Juliette Binoche and the like. Aamir made his stick out ears stick out even more during PK. Such is his level of confidence, security, despite his lack of looks. We still love his beautiful brown eyes, his face. And a small section of Indians loved him in TOH, despite the film’s minuses. Since Dec 1, the film has been running well in Turkey, another place that loves him.

Last time i gave 4.5/5 to Sultan (which i watched in theatre) and this time to Andhadhun (watched on netflix). I have never enjoyed a movie as much as Andhadhun. Probably a theatre watch would have made me like the movie even more. Now i regret not watching it in a theatre.

Ayushman was the winner of first Roadies and he was remarkable then. He won because of his perseverance and multi-talented personality. He has a screen presence which is better than Raj kumar rao and a great smile to go with it.

But Andhadhun needed a fabulous villain and Tabu is delicious in the role. This could probably be Tabu’s best and coolest role ever. The movie hooks me in within 5 minutes and the twists and turns till the end is unbelievable. The sheer joy of cinema in watching movies like Andhadhun shows how good scripts are coming up in Hindi cinema now.

There is another movie coming in 2019 – ‘Shoot the piano player’. The film has same star cast as Andhadhun and i have a hunch that it will be a sequel to Andhadhun.

Watch out for Ayushmaan. His forthcoming movies are:

    Googly ( Hindi )
    Release Date : 03 Mar 201

Shoot The Piano Player ( Hindi )
    Release Date : 09 Jul 2019

    Dream Girl ( Hindi )
    Release Date : 15 Aug 2019

Chhoti Si Baat Remake ( Hindi )
    Release Date : 04 Oct 2019

All the above four will be HITs. I can now be assured.

  150. 2.0 in Hindi would barely cross the collections of Krrish 3, 5 years after the latter’s release in a post GST scenario after releasing in 1000 more screens. K3 in itself despite being a genuine box office Hit was branded as an “underperformer” by many (looking at its potential of being the 3rd part in a very successful franchise). I wonder how we should define a “bilingual” (not dubbed as many desperate defenders of 2.0 claim) 2.0 in terms of underperformance. In terms of actual theatrical footfall I doubt 2.0 in Hindi would be too ahead of Ra.1

    Like

    • Problem with Krrish 3 was not its collections (170-175 cr nett in 2013 was decent enuf). Its just that Roshans over-reported such ridiculous numbers that its BO became a joke all over.

2.0 producers are also at it. Their ww gross figure has reportedly crossed 700 cr, which is again a load of bull crap. Actual collections in hindi will probably be in Krrish 3 range and may have earned a little bit of commission for hindi distributors. And some are calling it Superhit.

But if you dont blindly believe and follow these numbers then a certain section of trolls will keep nagging that the value of this blog has been reduced.

  152. Manikarnika & NTR: Krish Missed the Gold for Glory?

Being a Telugu director, Krish’s preferences and priorities are expected to be for Telugu cinema. But there were no star directors who gave up a grand budgeted and prestigious Bollywood film in hand for another such film in Telugu, except Krish.

Though it is not officially announced, it is clearly evident that Krish left Manikarnika without finishing it for NTR biopic, as he did not want to miss the chance to direct the legend’s biopic, that is for sure a ‘once in a lifetime’ chance to flaunt his adoration and sing the glory of NTR. But his decision to leave Kangana’s Manikarnika before completing it, earned him a bad reputation, professionally.

There were rumors that Krish’s conflicts with Kangana during the making of Manikarnika forced him to walk out of it, but when neither of them spoke openly about it, the ‘unprofessional’ pointers stopped at Krish.

Well, if Krish really ditched Manikarnika for NTR biopic, his act remains a big sacrifice and one has to agree to that after watching Kangana’s Manikarnika trailer. Kangana’s appearance and act as Jhansi Lakshmi Bai are mindblowing and the visuals and scenes in the trailer are spectacular.

For the wondrous performance of Kangana and the grand visuals, appreciations are being poured in on Manikarnika trailer. But, Krish is not alone at the receiving end, as Kangana added her name to ‘direction’ credits now. Had he not sacrificed Manikarnika for NTR, only Krish would have been enjoying the applause from all over.

Krish got his name in credits for direction, but the same appears blurred and faded next to Kangana’s ‘bold’ name. Let us see if his sacrifice of gold for the glory of NTR is worth it.

    • I have shot 70-80 per cent of Manikarnika, it’s my vision: Kangana Ranaut

The trailer of Kangana Ranaut’s much-awaited Rani Laxmibai biopic, Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, was released with pomp and pageantry in Mumbai on Tuesday. The film, co-directed by Krish Jagarlamudi and Kangana, chronicles the life of warrior queen Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi and her brave exploits against the British during the rebellion of 1857.

Written by Baahubali writer KV Vijayendra Prasad and lyricist Prasoon Joshi, Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi is made on an estimated budget of `180 crore. The period epic film is produced by Zee Studios in association with Kamal Jain and Nishant Pitti.

“The subject of this film has always been slightly jinxed. Several people have tried to make it in the past and failed. I believe there was some divine power at play when we started shooting. On my first day, I was hit on the head with a sword and had to get stitches. Several actors kept falling off their horses. Then the director left suddenly. But we kept pushing ahead. It was Prasoon Joshi who suggested I should finish the film when our director left. He believed I could do it,” Kangana said at the trailer launch.

“I have shot 70-80 per cent of Manikarnika. So I wasn’t completing someone else’s vision but following my own vision. I would like to thank our writers for that. The script of the film remained the same from day 1,” Kangana shared, adding, “Only a few actors would choose to toil and sweat in the heat instead of being inside their vanity vans and air-conditioned suites. But somehow, I just enjoyed the overall experience of directing. I wonder why people call directing a job, because it really is a lot of fun. I would definitely like to direct again in the future.”

TV actor Ankita Lokhande, who is making her Bollywood debut in the film, said, “I was supposed to do a film with Sanjay Leela Bhansali earlier but that didn’t happen. I don’t think there’s anything like a perfect debut. You take the film you get and make it perfect with your work. I have done my best with what was offered to me in Manikarnika and I hope everyone likes it.”

Producer Kamal Jain said, “This film is a tribute to a great personality who continues to inspire us through the ages. When I approached our writer, KV Vijayendra Prasad, with the idea of the film, he said only he could write this film because his daughter is also named Manikarnika.” Jain also clarified that the film’s original director, Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi, left the project because he was committed to the upcoming NTR biopic and could not spare time for the required reshoots for Manikarnika. “We had liked the first cut but felt it needed more. Since it’s a Rani Laxmibai biopic, we couldn’t compromise. We needed everything to be 10/10,” he said.

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi also stars Atul Kulkarni, Suresh Oberoi, Jisshu Sengupta, Danny Denzongpa, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Vaibhav Tatwawaadi. The film is scheduled to release on January 25, 2019 and is expected to clash with Hrithik Roshan’s Super 30 and Emraan Hashmi’s Cheat India.

Speaking about the clash, Shariq Patel, CEO of Zee Studios, said, “So far only Cheat India is announced. We are awaiting an announcement on Super 30. We are batting on the front foot with our film. It doesn’t matter if we clash with two films or ten films. We believe in our content and feel confident it will work with the audience.”

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi will release in 3,000 theatres across 50 countries. The film will be dubbed in English, Tamil and Telugu and also release in the IMAX format.

WOW. Typical Kangana. Even though loved the trailer and sureshot 200 crore movie, I know Kangana will start this game. She did some reshoots in about 40 day schedule which had a huge song for about 12 days shoot. But she’s claiming she shot almost 80% of movie now. She just let the teaser pass where they credit Krish as director but once the real trailer comes, she gets the billing as director. If she really directed 70 to 80% of the movie, she would have gotten the higher billing than Krish in credit. Either ways, Krish will not have time to fight the credit battle and that too with Kangana when folks from Bollywood itself are unable to fight with her!

Finally, doing some reshoots and shooting a scene when whole project is setup is different than shooting a movie from scratch and from paper to big screen.

  153. Box Office: ‘Aquaman’ Tops $200M In China And Nears $300M Worldwide

Aquaman earned another $5.41 million in China yesterday, bringing its cume in China to $201.39m. That puts its relative global total to $280m, not counting whatever it made overseas outside of China on Monday. That being said, it’s quite possible that it’ll pass $300m worldwide today or tomorrow. The film will, over the next few days, passed the ¥1.397 billion total of Ready Player One to become Warner Bros.’ biggest Chinese release ever. It’s still slightly below the $218m cume of the Steven Spielberg fantasy (yes, exchange rates matter), but give it a few days. Come what may, Warner Bros.’ exported titles have had a pretty good run in China this year.

The Meg (which is technically a Chinese/Hollywood co-production) earned $144 million domestic and another $153m in China toward a way-better-than-expected $528m worldwide cume. Dwayne Johnson’s Rampage may have just missed becoming the second live-action video game flick to top $100m domestic (thanks a lot, Avengers: Infinity War), but the rampaging monster movie earned $156m in China toward a $426m worldwide cume, just $7m shy of besting Warcraft to become the biggest video game movie ever (re-release?). Ready Player One cashed in on video game fandom (and its existence as a distinctly American pop culture deconstruction) to nab $218m in China and $135m domestic for a $582m worldwide cume.

  154. Zero Box Office Prediction: Will Shah Rukh Khan’s Film Earn Around 90 Crore In Its Opening Weekend?

Despite limited buzz around film, trade pundits predict bumper opening for Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero comes with a lot of expectations. After all, the film sees the actor in a never-seen-before avatar – that of a vertically challenged man. More importantly, the Christmas release is being touted as the film that will see Khan at the top of his game, especially after his last outing, Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017), proved to be a damp squib.

Considering the Aanand L Rai-directed film has the advantage of being a festival release, trade analysts are predicting a strong opening at the box office.

Trade expert Amod Mehra says, “The word-of-mouth is positive. Plus, it has a unique concept. I believe the film should earn anywhere between Rs 75 to Rs 90 crore over the first weekend. The film will surely earn profits.” However, Mehra points out that the romance drama has not generated the hype that usually accompanies a Khan outing.

Trade analyst Girish Wankhede adds, “Zero is targeted more towards the classes than the masses, which may be a concern. But, Shah Rukh’s charm never gets old. He will surely pull the audience to the theatres.”

  155. Chinese moviegoer Gavin Feng, who actively tracks the Chinese box office, has a slightly different take. He says, “Bollywood films still needs time to cultivate consumers because while some titles did well, others like Toilet – Ek Prem Katha and Sultan didn’t do too well. Bollywood films are still a bit of a mystery to Chinese audiences because when we discuss Bollywood, our first thought is Aamir Khan and his works, or a film with songs and dances. So, a Bollywood film does well if the audience can feel and react to it,” he shares.

Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh echoes the same sentiments when he says that even though China is a golden goose for India because of the sheer quantum of business, it all boils down to good quality content at the end of the day, “At one point UAE was supposed to be a big market for Indian films but I think China has easily over shadowed that market. But of course that is only in the case of good films, content driven films. It’s a very unpredictable business, for instance 102 Not Out did very well in India but didn’t fare very well there. Or Padman that was recently released there is not setting the box office on fire in China. So it all boils down to audiences preference and what they feel they can connect to at that point of time. Thugs of Hindostan was rejected in India, but we have to wait and see what China holds for it,” he says.

At the same time, Gavin also reveals that he would like to see a co-production between the two countries. “Chinese local films might do well in its own land, but some directors will want to take Chinese culture and stories to other countries. India and China have many similar situations and problems so it’ll be easier for both audiences to relate to these films,” he avers.

A flop is a flop whether it is bigger or smaller. A person dies due to old age or some illness. Or a young person dies in an accident. A leader dies. All are called deaths. Not bigger death or smaller death. That is for statistics.

Looking to China is not a crime. It is just a curiosity. whether aamir’s starpower works or not.

His one flop is more talked about than 10 successes of other stars. It brings a sort of earthquake on cinema blogs and sites. And that speaks all.

      • These figures are not updated. It crossed 600 cr after 13 days…ABO itself had it at 540 cr after 11 days and they were at the lower end of the estimates. Malaysia was at 27cr last I checked and it is the highest grossing Indian movie there and here they have it at 1.97 mn which is not right. IMO the movie should be closer to 650 to 675 cr WW. BOIs figure was 613 cr after 13 days…ABO will usually have an update at end of the run. Another fact to consider is that the producer grosses are surely with 3D glasses and many others are not adding that to the gross..and it’s quite a big number.
A good example is ABO which is quoting hindi grosses without 3 D glass that’s why their grosses for rest of India look less…

  163. Dear Moderators,

I feel Akshay Kumar is immensely popular in India. I am his big fan.

He releases 3-4 movies in a year. For this he does following promotions –
    1. Visits 30-45 cities and in each trip thousands of people turn up in colleges, malls, streets, etc.
    2. Gives 50 video interviews and 100-150 print interviews
    3. His fans posts thousands of tweets and instagram per release.

Altogether close to 1 lac posts per film.

So in a year 3 lac – 4 lac posts.

Please let me know if it is acceptable to post all these?
If acceptable, is it sensible to post all these?

    • You are already posting insensible stuff everywhere. On WC and BO threads. After China kicked out Padman, you have become insane. On the other hand, they have welcomed aamir with a big flop Toh. You said that chinese will like entrepreneurship of akshay. Forget china. Even in India Salman, Srk are much more popular than Akshay.

      • Not just Padman flopping China (his so-called best film) after an average run in india. Its also about 2.0 fake figures that producers are throwing around to get some respectability after investing 550 cr on this film. Akshay fans will be frustrated, just like srk fans getting upset when a trade analyst predicts 75-90 cr for Zero in opening 3 days.

        • Even if Toh underperforms in China, aamir’s popularity and prestige will not fade either in India or in China.
Akshay is like Jeetendra, Volume and hits but never reached the level of Rajesh Khanna, Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra.

  164. Be wary of fake reviews for Zero that have surfaced. Fake accounts of Rajeev Masand, Rahul Raut are set up saying it’s a disaster. I’ve read this from Facebook.

  165. What has been response to Zero?
The poster with SRK and Chimp has actually ensured that the movie has more to it. Any SRK interviews?

Can we have someone give importance to a bigger and more important movie than what is happening in Nanjing?

  167. “If This Film Doesn’t Work, What Will Happen?” – Shah Rukh Khan On Zero

Shah Rukh Khan has been promoting his upcoming film, Zero lately. SRK has impressed the audiences with his acting skills, screen presence and hence he is known as the Baadshah of Bollywood. However, like any other actor, he has had his share of hits and misses too. His latest releases, Jab Harry Met Sejal, Fan and Raees failed to impress. The actor is very aware of the effect the back-to-back misses can have on an actor’s career, no matter their popularity. In a recent interview with the leading daily, Hindustan Times, SRK opened up and spoke about the same discussing what would happen if Zero met the same fate.

    Here’s what he said:
See, I can’t change that, and if I can’t change something, why should I think about it? If people feel that Zero is very important for me, it’s their feeling. God forbid, if this film doesn’t work, what will happen? Maybe, I won’t get work for six months or 10 months, but if I believe that my craft and art is good, I will continue to get work.

Talking about how he chooses his films, he said:
Then, I will probably make a comeback which I have been doing for the last 15 years (laughs), or maybe, the comeback won’t happen. The trade world has a point of view about a film’s business, and they are right from their viewpoint. Main dekhta hoon ki is film ki story kya hai? Or is mein nayapan kya hai? That’s more important to me.
The trailer and previews of Zero seem to be interesting and we are looking forward to the film which releases on 21st December 2018.
