Must admit, haven’t seen all of Sridevi’s films here…so some are hunches.

madhuri has some major hits in her career but her filmography is so weak. I can pick 4 Sridevi movies which are far superior than entire career of Madhuri.

Anyways, my pick would be –
    Sadma
    Mr india
    Khuda Gawah
    English Vinglish
    ChaalBaaz
    Nagina
    MOM
    Kalakaar

And innumerable Tamil & Telugu movies.

hard to pick any madhuri’s performance, they all are so weak. Still
    Beta
    Parinda

Btw, beta was offered to sridevi who refused it because she had already worked in its original Telugu Blockbuster version and she was doing multiple movies with Anil kapoor. But, it turned out to be one of her many bad decisions during early 90s.

  7. I have seen most of these movies in theatre.
Am i the real movie geek here?

Wow these are tough choices. 🙂

I am starting group by Group for Sri Devi first.

Group 1 – Lamhe. Jaanbaaz has Sri in iconic special appearance. She was at her peak then and movie recovered whatever it could due to her.

Group 2 – Sadma Vs Mr India…this is real tough one. I will pick Mr India. As a kid i loved her performance. Esp the Charlie Chaplin one in the casino was a hoot.

Group 3 – This is probably the toughest group so far. Three blockbusters – nagina and Chandni along with EV. My pick will be Chandni and probably my best Sridevi movie ever.

Group 4 – Chalbaaz has to be here despite the fact that i really liked her in MOM.

    • So my choices for Sridevi are –

      Lamhe
      Mr India
      Chandni
      Chalbaaz

Madhuri will need to wait. She made me wait for years. Now it is my turn to keep her waiting.

Can anyone explain to me this format? Are you going to make sridevi vs madhuri movies competing with each other at some stage? Or it is individual competition among their own movies? If so, we can have two separate posts as there are so many iconic movies of sri which are not even mentioned and many are from tamil and telugu.

    Like

    • That would have been fair but Jay wants competition between the two. For example if Mr.India is top film for Sri and HAHK for Madhuri, then the competition will be between Mr.India and HAHK.

      Like

    • They will compete after Group Stage. 8 matches of Sridevi Vs Madhuri. Obviously after that I can’t vouch that they will always compete as we might end up with 5 Madhuri films and 3 Sridevi ones so I will ensure 3 of the QF’s are Madhuri Vs Sridevi and the last one is Madhuri Vs Madhuri.

Hopefully it will even up but it might end up being a Sridevi Vs Sridevi final!

  9. Sridevi looks luminous. Her acting may have problems but she has variety of films some of which did not get mention here. Jumping from one industry to another with a language so different is not easy.
Unlike Rekha, Hema and some others, she made a lasting impact in the south industry with a number of hit films to her credit.
In this respect, she is incomparable.
Madhuri had to tackle only one industry and now she is trying to do some marathi films. Unfortunately her filmography in bollywood films is not memorable and only her acting remains memorable. There cannot be another Madhuri. Even Deepika cant match Madhuri in looks, dancing or acting. For me Beta remains Madhuri’s best film. And Parinda too. I heard good things about Yaarana too.
Chandni would have been different with Madhuri. Madhuri easily could have done all of Sri’s films and they would have been as good if not much better. But boxoffice was doubtful as Sri’s pull was at a different level in those times.

these ladies for a major part made the 80s and 90s bearable. Madhuri’s tenure extended till Devdas but it won’t be wrong to say they were the highlight in many, many of their films.

Sridevi especially stole the show from Anil in Mr. India! It was quite an achievement, in an era with hardly any female centric subjects, and in a film that was all about a male superhero!

    • I woke up in the 80’s so very hard to constructively favour Sridevi, seems she’s more of the 80’s star here plus with me not being familiar with her Southern films I really emphatically am all in for Madhuri here.

Just devastated that Tezaab, Saajan, HAHK, DTPH all found themselves in one group! We lose 2 of them. I don’t think I could sit through the latter 2 without Madhuri and music…

I guess I missed the major Sridevi craze.

  20. I like both. Both are par excellence. Both have their own charm. But I believe Madhuri is more versatile and is a complete package if you look at subtleties.

I remember there was time when Sridevi had hit films like Karma, Jaanbaaz, Nagina and Mr. India in 1986 and 1987. Sridevi established no 1 position after that in bollywood.

Just next year around 1988 and 1989 Madhuri Dixit had hits like Tezaab, Ram Lakhan, and Tridev. She was good and people termed her as good and competetive and some started comparing her with Sridevi.

In 1990 other than Kishen Kaniya, Madhuri gave biggest hit of the year Dil. Sridevi also came up with hit films like Chandni and Chaalbaaz around late 1989-1990.

In 1991, Madhuri Dixit had Saajan. In 1991, Sridevi had Lamhe which was not great success in India but overseas.

In 1992, Madhuri Dixit had Beta and Sridevi had Khuda Gawah. Beta did well in India. Khuda Gawah failed at box office in India but was hit overseas.

Sridevi had average success in films like Gumrah in 1993. On the other hand, Madhuri’s Khalnayak was hit in 1993. Sridevi’s position weakened in 1992 and 1993. Madhuri Dixit was still not proclaimed no 1.

Then came Hum Aapke Hain Kaun in 1994 where she looked stunning. She was proclaimed no 1 only after Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. She looked better than Sridevi in that movie. She looked as gorgeous as Madhubala. There are some places she looks so good that no actress can beat her. But that does not mean one movie can decide and we can say that Madhuri is best actress ever and better than Sridevi.

    1. Acting Skills
Both are natural in front of camera. They have great screen presence. Both look believable in whatever they are portraying. I cannot compare their movies and it wouldn’t be fair as well. I believe Madhuri had a tough time considering the kind of films being made in the 90’s . Sridevi was already popular when Madhuri was introduced, hence had more box-office pull in late 80’s. Madhuri came into the picture with Tezaab, Ram Lakhan, Dil etc. All were movies which were hero-centric, while Sri Devi got female-oriented movies like Nagina, Chandramukhi, Chaalbaaz, etc. Sridevi got a much wider spectrum to display her acting skills. And madhuri had to do her best in whatever little screen time she got and she did spectacularly. I think Indian Cinema hasn’t done enough justice to these two actresses. They have so many roles for an old Amitabh Bacchan, but hardly any roles for old Sridevi and Madhuri. Javed Akhtar said that Indian audience has seen only a fraction of talent of both Sridevi and Madhuri. They didn’t get good roles and both have still achieved so much with whatever little they have got.

Both are captivating and have tremendous screen presence and both overshadowed their fellow co-stars.
If I have to choose one, as a kid of 90’s it would be Sridevi and as a mature audience, it would be Madhuri. I feel Madhuri is more versatile with her comic sense, voice modulation, expressions and other subtleties.

    2. Choice of movies
I would say both did very good movies and their choices were more.

    3. Beauty
Beauty lies in eyes of beholder. For ME, Madhuri is more beautiful. I like the big eyes of Sridevi. She looks innocent because of them. Madhuri because of her doe-shaped eyes, high cheek-bones, aquiline nose looks like a QUEEN.

    4. Character
Based on interviews, both are private people. They don’t bad-mouth anyone. All co-stars praise them. All call them humble.

    • Feels like Sridevi in 90’s had a few hiccups in major projects whilst Madhuri blossomed.

Seems they had so many films with Anil Kapoor.

      Like

      • But her comeback was better with English Vinglish and Mom. Her early death deprived us of more films from her.

        Like

        • Agree. Sri Devi’s comeback films and her acting were way better than Madhuri’s comeback films. In fact, old Madhuri is quite irritating now that she is far from the sexy siren she used to be. Never thought much of her acting anyways. That way perhaps Sri was better in nineties too. Its like Deepika is not a great actor, but better than the likes of Anushka or Priyanka.

          Like

        • Absolutely. Loved EV and Mom is pretty good. Madhuri in AN is decent enough and after that it’s been poor, I’d hardly call hers an attempt at all as a comeback.

          Liked by 1 person

        • Madhuri’s comeback attempt has so far not honored her stardom.
Hopefully 2019 releases like Total Dhamaal and Takht reverses the trend.
She is too good to not make it big soon.

          Like

        • Sorry Kalank, not Takht.

          Like

      • Yes Sri couldn’t maintain her stardom in 90s. There was a tectonic shift happening then in terms of movie making from 80s masala to 90s romantic films. Sri entered hindi films rather easily via south indian remakes with Jeetendra. Then Rekha was the biggest heroine in early 80s and for a long time it was Rekha Vs Sri.
Sridevi zoomed pass Rekha in 86-87.

Then Madhuri came like a superstar from tezaab. She took over the glamour quotient first then the dance quotient and then acting quotient from Sri Devi in hindi films.

So if we just compare Sri devi’s hino filmography, Madhuri beats her hands down.

However Sri devi has a very powerful South indian filmography. Her hits with Kamal Hassan and Rajnikanth were huge. Most were remade in Hindi with her. I have not seen those movie…but those who have seen find Sri devi a better actress in her mother toungue language. Her voice was dubbed for a long time and only later when she became a star did the producers agree to have Sri dub her own.

If someone is asked to think of first thing that comes to mind about Madhuri, 99% of them will say either “dhak dhak”, “ek do teen” or “cholie ke piche kya hai”. She became famous with sort of item songs.

If someone is asked to think of first thing that comes to mind about sridevi, 99% of them will say either “chandni”, “lamhe”, “Mr. India”, “sadma”, “chaalbaaz”, or even more recent “mom” and “english vinglish”. She was known for acting. She was called female bachchan. She had central role in many film even thou a movie starred big male stars. Very hard to have that if you think about it.

  30. btw, if you put Sri’s Chandni on one side and all the films of Madhuri on opposite side, Sri will win hands down just on that one film! it is a text-book for any heroine….

    • Its not great acting by any means though. It somewhat worked in a semi-commercial space. But yes, Sri always had more substance than all the dhak-dhak choli ke peeche matkas and jhatkas. Maduri’s complete lack of grace in her middle aged avatar has tarnished all that sexy siren stuff. Neither she has any grace like Sri as displayed in EV/Mom, nor has she any character like Rekha in an past-item-number phase (Rekha was fab even when she was young also).

  32. Whenever the Madhuri versus Sridevi debate comes around, very conveniently, and ignorantly I should say, the term bandied around is that her so-called item numbers define her rather than her acting chops; as is evident on this blog.

One needs to see the trajectory of both the actresses. Sridevi has been extremely lucky, in the sense that because she started as a child artiste in Tamil film industry in 1967. During the early ’70s and ’80s, she got to work with supremely talented directors of the Tamil industry like Bharati Raaja: Acting with a giant like Hassan and an upcoming Rajinikanth also helped her a lot. So she started as an actress belonging to meaningful right away. That gives her an edge. By the time she came to the Hindi film industry, the nuances and requirements were known to her. What was missing, was just the language. And remember, the very fact that language wasn’t important in Hindi films of the ’80s like TOHFA and those umpteen Rishi Kapoor films, made her popular. If you catch her by the scruff of the neck and make her ‘act’ in Hindi, her short-coming would have filled a cauldron.

Madhuri, on the other hand, conquered the Hindi film industry at a time when content was below-standards, and it was upto the actors to raise the bar with their performances and get indian arses on the seat: That she was an extremely talented dancer thanks to her classical-dancing roots, proved to be a double-edged sword for her. Everybody knew her acting chops, but she was so over-powering and graceful with her dancing, and with the success of TEZAAB and SAILAAB’s song. that obviously, producers and directors flocked to her with dance-dominated films. However, if one has seen her massy films from KHALNAYAK to RAM LAKHAN, even in her dance-heroine avatar, she revealed her acting chops. It was then, further encapsulated in her fantastic performances in PARINDAA and MRITYUDAND.

Sridevi, to me, represented a highly irritating actress, mainly with her poorly modulated shrill-voice, mainly in roles that called for some seriousness. Hence, she was delightful  in films like Ramu’s KSHNANA KSHNAM, Mr. INDIA, and CHAALBAAZ. In fact, she was born to do these roles. She was fine in the Tamil and the southern films as I mentioned before, but she was truly average in Hindi films that called upon her to show some serious acting chops. However, there’s no denying that before Madhuri, she will remain the first female-superstar of Hindi cinema.

There’s always  a difference between measuring an actor’s filmography, versus an actor’s innate talent. As someone mentioned, in the annals of film industry, Sridevi’s will appear more prestigious thanks to her association with ‘quality’ directors. However, Madhuri, for me, will go down as one of the most talented actresses amongst Sridevi, Juhi, Meenakshi, and Manisha. Of course, it never realized its complete potential, and I do not contest that.

When I talk of innate talent versus a certain filmography, here’s an example:

    a) Amitabh in Deewar or Trishul verses in Namal Halaal; the former two will be etched in history, the latter will be a gem for actors and audiences..

    b) Madhuri in Mrityudand versus in Khel

    c) Hoffman in Rainman versus Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy or Billy Bathgate

Sometimes, 0ne needs to be not so involved in missing the forest for the trees..

No one can deny Madhuri’s acting talent or her huge success. Only her filmography poses some problems. I agree Sri can be irritating sometimes with her expressions and thats her weakness more than her voice and voice modulation. But her tamil, telugu and even Malayalam films are on par with the best of actors. One should have innate talent and also a passion to learn. Then only they can achieve great success.

    • Ultimately who gets to decide what ‘innate talent’ is?? The definition would vary from person to person depending on his or her taste and priorities, so it is not an objective thing like hit or flop but so many intangible things to account for while determining who is more talented or gifted as the criterion to judge would always differ. What you do with your talent is more important than the talent itself as has been proved by innumerable examples who, though, were extremely talented but lacked the judgement to utilise their talent in anything worthwhile. This trait of knowing oneself is also a talent which can’t be undermined as movies are an amalgamation of real & fantasy and those who are able to sift through it last much longer.

      • The innate talent is there for us to see. Some may appreciate some actors more and some actors less. But innate talent cant be hidden. It contributes to the success of a film or success of an actor. It is like the fragrance of a flower. One may like it or not,
but the fragrance spreads and makes a statement.
Agree that one should know how to use that talent. Otherwise it will be like a wasted gift.

No, it’s a subject of time and circumstances. Why did Amitabh get ZANJEER after established ‘actors’ like Dev, Dharmendra, and Rajesh rejected it? Dev rejected it because it didn’t suit his ‘romantic’ image, and there were no songs!

Who gets to decide what innate talent is? It is YOU.!

Again, one is missing the point. Who are the directors that Madhuri worked with? Who were reining at that point? Ghai? Mehra? Dhawan? Where was Prakash Jha? Where was Shekar Kapur? Where was Balu Mahendra? Do you remember a film called DHARAVI by Sudhir Mishra? Why were these directors so less prominent during the ’90s? Madhuri was the first choice for 1942. Manisha only replaced her; a poor replacement by any standards. She looked beautiful, but that was it. In FILMARE in 1993, Chopra had carried a port-folio of Madhuri in 1942 and folks were stunned with her fit into that role.

There are many variables here. And that’s why a contest between Sridevi and Madhuri, though juicy, is not really a level-playing field..

One film, one film of Bhagwan Dada and it is still remembered with actors mimicking him all over the place; and one dares to question innate talent?? By that yard-stick, Dada Kondke is really..nothing in Marathi cinema..

        Tendulkar – numbers
        Dravid – reliable
        Ganguly – gritty, determined
        Laxman – poetry in motion
Dhoni – matchwinner in crucial situations

There are infinite reasons for talent. But also infinite ways talent can be used, judged, nurtured.

There is no magic formula. By pigeonholing one is already filtering out talent.

  37. Madhuri definitely was a potential that was under utilised. But whose fault was it? Is it that producers/directors were scared to cast her against type or was Madhuri herself apprehensive? I would lay part of the blame on Madhuri herself.
Lajja, Mrutyudand all came much later in her career and was perhaps a little too late.I loved Aaja Nachle but the burden of making Madhuri dance pretty much throughout the film really brought it down.

    • This is definitely partly shared blame. It’s a tougher industry for women so surely that should be factored in. I.e. A male with the equivalent talent would have more probability to find his talent nurtured than the female. And the male could make it happen himself. It’s only now we see female actresses becoming producers too. Timing, luck, fate all play a part.

It’s an unfair rap to reduce Madhuri to just a dancer. She represented something much more.

My own personal liking is further enhanced by how my father’s older brother loved her (he was well into his 50’s and loved films from 50’s onwards). I think she cut across generations and yes looks played a huge part. I’m not denying my likeness for her is largely due to her absolutely stunning looks. But even Katrina is stunning but that’s not enough! In the main Madhuri dominated the male lead in my opinion, I can’t think of many films where I think she was so bad. The million dollar smile is legendary.

I guess I am poor at explaining those things, so I said I will leave it at that. I had already mentioned before, that Madhuri/Sridevi would be a very tricky thing what variable parameters. It’s just not a level-playing field, by any standards.

So you need to look at the criteria on which it is based which was never about ‘talent’ to begin with. Your explanation can be countered with another explanation from my perspective, so let’s not be judgemental on others as the road to it will keep taking us in circles with no conclusive end to it!!

      No big deal.
Why do you think only your choice is the best and our choice is to be ridiculed?
Manisha is considered by many as a very beautiful and talented actress and your blind love for Madhuri does not permit you to make a fair judgment. You called LS as a blind fan of aamir. What about you? Are you not a blind fan of Bachchan, Madhuri and Sachin?

Where does it talk of Carrey Mulligan? it talks of my ‘blind’ worshipping of Amitabh, Tendulkar, and Madhuri, while of course, conveniently ignoring Aamir — my criticisms of Amitabh’s family, his blog., etc, are conveniently censored.

Let me give you a context of what I meant; in case you STILL want explanations:

Chopra wanted a very ‘different’ look and he opted for Madhuri since she was the only actress who could fit in western and eastern clothes and carry it off well. For some stupid date reasons, Madhuri couldn’t do it and it landed up in Manisha’s kitty. Manisha had already acquired a reputation in the over-rated Mani’s poorly executed Bombay. So that ‘innocent’ girl look was just an add-on.

I repeat, I am NOT able to reproduce all the pictures of Madhuri for 1942. But that was twisted in content.

This IS the last. I will leave it at this.

They say one gets what is due to them by destiny and it is correct only to some extent.

When Rajesh Khanna’s stardom ended, many felt its the end of the world.

My aim is not to fight with anyone but sometimes it just happens. And I hate myself for that.

Jay expected fireworks but not to this extent when he pitted Sri and Madhuri against each other.

Even if Madhuri is a better actress than both Manisha and Sri, she cannot do all the good films done by them. It is humanly impossible. I will appreciate her for making the best of the opportunities given to her which only very few could do.

    Like

    • I think Manisha had a beautiful face. In films like 1942, Dil Se, Bombay and Criminal, her beautiful, innocent face lit up the screen. She was good on these under-stated kind of roles because her innocence worked for her.

In other films like AHAT or Yugpurush, her limitations showed. As poor as some or Madhuri or Sridevi’s films were, their respective acting range or performance were not the main problems and never called into question.

It’s a no brainer when it comes to comparing the acting talent of Madhuri/Sridevi to that of Manisha. The formers were more talented.

Manisha was good in certain kind of deals. But Madhuri/Sridevi were the better actors. Having watched most of their respective films, I think Madhuri just about edges it against Sridevi.

The best moments in the film are the father-son bonding when Aamir males blunders but then gradually comes into his own. While Aamir was subtle and natural, Manisha hammed a bit too much during the emotional scenes.

Agreed she was great in Agnisakshi and Khamoshi. Those films along with 1942, Dil Se, Criminal and Bombay were the best moments og her career. I liked her a lot in these films.

No one film of Sri Devi can compete with the likes of HAHK. The movie was extraordinary in every sense and landmark in indian cinema.

Add Khalnayak, Saajan, Beta, Pre Pratigya, Tezaab …man i can go on.

      Lamhe Vs Laadla

      Madhuri Group 5
      Tezaab Vs Saajan
Hum Aapke Hain Koun Vs Dil To Pagal Hai

Group 5 is quite superior not only in overall box office but also in performances and overall movie quality.

      =============

      Group 2
      Sadma Vs Mr India
      Khuda Gawah Vs Judaai

      Group 5
      Tezaab Vs Saajan
Hum Aapke Hain Koun Vs Dil To Pagal Hai

I mean again the same story. Sri’s group is no comparision.

      =============

      Group 3
      Nagina Vs Chandni
      Gurudev Vs English Vinglish

      Group 6
      Prem Pratigya Vs Beta
      Raja Vs Pukar

I can bet Prem Pratigya over all the 4 movies of Sri devi. Despire this box office of Madhuri is better.

      ===============

      Group 4
      Aakhree Raasta Vs Chaalbaaz
      Gumrah Vs Mom

      Group 7
      Parinda Vs Khal Nayak
      Yaarana Vs Devdas

      Again Madhuri wins hands down!!!

Box office opening of Khalnayak is legendry.

      Last one-

      Group 8
      Dil Vs Anjaam
      Koyla Vs Aaja Nachle

      Hahahaha 😀

She played a blind, orphan girl aspires to be a successful singer. With the help of another street performer, she sets out to make a mark and in the process discovers her real parents.

She won rave reviews for her acting then.

See one song from this movie.

  47. Just to dispel the notion that I’m some kind of logical bot with no heart or emotions (if ever anyone thought so), I’d like to add that I’ve never found anyone as beautiful on screen as…Parveen Babi.

Not even Madhubala! One look at Parveen and I was transported somewhere else.

People talk about Amitabh and Rekha but I always thought Bachchan and Parveen Babi made the perfect pair, on screen.

Not so sure about that but did like them both in Deewar. I thought Yash Chopra presented them quite well – surprising for the time in which it was made. Am also reminded of Khudaar

LOL on that. But for the most part whenever Bachchan is there , Farida Jalal appears and I hate that parts of the film. On Pran, there is no excuse except that he is a personal favourite. Am fascinated by the fact that though he was a mere villain, he was bigger than the hero and paid much more than them.

To me, Sri was Lady Bachchan – just with her sheer screen presence and timing she would elevate any craply written roles – also Latha made a valid point, Sri was not about only Hindi films – she did many nice films down South – someone so dedicated that Yash Chopra had to admit that she was the only actress he was in awe of……

    • I think Lady Bachchan was a media coined term. Maybe she deserved it for couple of years. But i though Sri took it too seriously and chose bad moves post chaalbaaz/chandni. To remain true to the lady bachchan thing, she let go many good movies. She could never have another ’88 thereon.

  49. I think many are missing the point when discussing Madhuri’s filmography.

They are restricting it just to the list Jayshah made.

Madhuri’s filmography is quite vast ranging from comedy to action to romance to thriller to social to heroinegiri to angelic to wifey to girl friendish to friendish to girl next door to terrific roles to extraordinary performances to iconic movies.

Her dancing talent was so sparkling that it Indian film industry during her time was made famous because of that.

But of dance had been the only quality, she would have been next to helen. But gleefully, Madhuri was a complete package. She wisely chose dance to wipe out Sri Devi’s clout who was then the best dancer compared to Rekha ro Jaya Prada. Before Madhuri arrives,,,Sri was having a cake walk.

Tezaab poked the castle Sri had built. And it was not just Ek do teen song…it was the fiery performance which got attention.

From then on Mads never looked back. Her choice of movies was also superior to Sridevi who got too hyped because of the false female Amitabh comparison. She started doing movies for her persona and in the process missed out on several good movies which Madhuri did and then completely owned it.

    Like

    • I think beyond the list, there are some notable Madhuri films. Of course Jay couldn’t put them all here. Super hits like like Ram Lakhan or to a lesser extent Tridev. Films like 100 days that worked only because of her. Also remember that Sailasb song. An iconic moment. And Thanedaar.

Sridevi also had strong films like Want ki Awaaz and Guru.

      • The point you guys are missing is, what did madhuri exactly had to do in movie like Tridev or for that matter ram lakhan?

She was more like sidekick in those movies while you had stars like sunny, rajnikant, rishi kapoor, vinod khanna, etc playing sidekick to sridevi. Movies were made with central role for sridevi.

“remember that Sailasb song. An iconic moment”
Yes, I do. Again a song is referenced to remember madhuri. And it’s not a song which has and grace, it’s usually a song made like an item number.

Don’t get me wrong. Madhuri was a huge star in her time but her rise to the fame was due to the songs mainly (they were more of what we call item numbers today). She was also very free with lip kissing, etc (dayavaan, dil, parinda, and many more).

I remember my friends used to say “madhuri ki film hai, dekhne ko milega”

Coming to present, i don’t even think it’s worth talking about englishvinglish/mom versus madhuri recent release.

        • agree 100% and not saying that this is the reason for her success cause malika sherawat did same and didn’t last much.

What i’m saying is it didn’t hurt either and added that extra umph to her and reason to watch the movie. If side actors does it, than nobody cares, if the leading lady does it, then it is something. lip kiss was still a big thing in 90s, especially if the leading lady does it, think of karishma in raja hindustani.

are u saying Sri never played a role which was like a side kick?
          There are numberous films.
Usually heroines dont get meateir roles at the beginner of their career. You picked two movies of Madhuri when she was starting. Please look at Sri’s movies…there are many more examples of her non relevance. But again i dont want to pick those to undermine her.

    • Such was the craze of Madhuri in her hey days, her fans protested against the name of ‘Raja’ & wanted it to be rechristened as ‘Raani’ instead!! And that’s what i read in the newspaper back then during its release time which is insane to say the least. Also it has been reported many a time that she was paid more than Salman for HAHK which tells a lot about her popularity during those time as well as her box-office draw.

Why does it always have to be choice between two when both of them are equally talented, achieved a lot in their respective careers and are from the different eras?? Madhuri and Sridevi are the legends of not only Hindi cinema but Indian cinema as what they did achieve despite working in a male dominated industry where roles have been written for their male leads and most of the times, if not all, female leads getting the step-motherly treatment in almost every facet of filmmaking, is nothing sort of than a miraculous feat. Their contribution to Hindi film industry is immense and needs to be lauded for it.

Sri was just adequate. Soni Razdan was impressive in her short role. Sanju baba was his usual self and there was Bhatt’s favourite Rahul Roy. Beefy Bob Cristo, Tom Alter and Kunika. It is also on Prime. Timepass film.

    • It was inspired from Bankok Hilton. In fact Bhatt’s favorite back then, Rahul Roy, had much lengthier role initially. Dutt had a cameo, appearing in the second half. But Roy’s career wasn’t going well while Dutt had Saajan and Sadak released in the meanwhile. So Yash Johar put pressure on Bhatt to trim Roy’s role to a guest appearance and make Dutt’s character a full fledged one.

It was a decent film. But the expectations were huge and it underperformed.

Difficulty with Madhuri Vs XYZ is that no one during her times – Juhi, Manisha, Urmila, Karishma could continue their momentum despite getting/showing sparks.

Madhuri literally stole the thunder from Sri from the time Tezaab released and till DevDas…she was No 1.

Group 1 – Lamhe and Janbaaz look like going through but meet in the final group match where Lamhe has a 7 vote lead currently
Group 2 – Mr India and Khuda Gawah lead here but Sadma has a chance of sneaking through as it is facing the 1 vote Judaai (munna 🙂 ) while Mr India and Khuda Gawah fight each other in a mammoth match up, that may eliminate either or send both through!
Group 3 – English Vinglish is through it seems. Chandni and Nagina are tied on 2nd with 14 each. The former seems favourite to sneak through with Gurudev in final match
Group 4 – 1st plays 2nd and 3rd plays 4th. Chaalbaaz looks safe at the top but watch out Gumrah. Gumrah needs to play well here otherwise the door is open for either Mom or Aakhree Raasta

Group 5 – What a group! Tezaab looks good to go through as it is facing bottom placed Dil To Pagal Hai. But Saajan Vs Hum Aapke Hain Koun is the almighty tussle here, who will prevail?
Group 6 – Top 2 face off, whilst Beta and Raja need a landslide victory to get through
Group 7 – Khal Nayak could go from 3rd to 1st here if it trounces Yaarana, while Parinda Vs Devdas is crucial in what may be a 2 out of 3 photofinish
Group 8 – Dil looks good to get through. Negative SRK Vs Blind SRK is crucial to deciding if one of these SRK/Madhuri combo’s get through at the expense of Aaja Nachle, though unlikely!

  87. Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Saajan are really in a battle here. Two iconic music albums.

    My favourite song from each

Note how Madhuri’s name appears first.

One of my favourite love triangle films ever! I felt so sorry for Dutt in this movie, I think only HDDCS comes in similar range.

Tezaab seems to have easily won this group. What happened to DTPH? Geez another love triangle with memorable songs.

    My favourite from DTPH

  94. Did your overwhelming popular actress image prevent more art house projects coming your way? In spite of an occasional Dharavi you never really went about seeking realistic parts in your career?
Well, I did films like Mrityudand and Prahaar whenever I got those offers. Parinda was another movie that could be called off-beat. I had to say yes to do them, right? So I had never consciously stayed away from art house cinema. It’s all about doing a good film and at the end of the day the only difference between the two is that commercial films have more entertainment. Also I think I got my fair share of good parts to play within popular cinema. There were a few films where in spite of my doing challenging performances they didn’t do very well commercially like Sangeet, where I played a double role of a blind girl and her mother.

Were you disappointed by the failure of films like Lajja, Mrityudand, Prem Granth… which showcased some of your toughest acting moments?
No, because I enjoyed working in those films. I enjoyed doing those ‘controversial’ scenes, getting into those characters and playing out their lives; so it was a tremendous amount of satisfaction for me to have been able to do these varied roles. I have worked long enough to understand that you can never anticipate box-office results. There will be hits and misses but the fact that I got the opportunity to portray these characters is thrilling for me.

      For example

      Group 1
      sub group
      Lamhe
      Janbaaz

      sub group
      Laadla
      Himmatwala

      Chose Lamhe or Janbaaz

      Ladla or Himmatwala

      Group 5
      sub group
      Hum Aapke Hain Koun
      Tezaab

      sub group
      Saajan
      Dil To Pagal Hai

      Chose HAHK or Tezaab

      Chose Saajan or DTPH

Just cut and paste all the 8 groups from my above comment. And delete the one you dont want from every sub group. Every group has 2 sub groups.

      Group 1
      Lamhe
      Jaanbaaz

I will delete Jaanbaaz. So Lamhe will remain.

      Ladla
      Himmatwala
I will remove Ladla. So Hmmat wala will remain.

Sridevi at her best versus me discovering manhood at child-hood and asking my Dad to get me married to Madhuri immediately! — having first night on Madh Island — and of course, getting slapped in return and asked to focus on multiplication tables!! • 😀
Group was easier. Now is time to separate fandom from film somehow. Not easy!

      Like

      • Not easy at all. for eg- Jaanbaaz vs Pukar. If I recollect, Sridevi had a very inconsequential role in it. The movie was more known or rather notorious if I may say for the Anil-Dimple combo.
But many seem to prefer it over Pukar where I thought Madhuri was very good

        Like

        • Fair enough. If someone prefers Janbaaz as a film it’s fair! The way the votes are going so far, Sridevi films are doing well. In total it’s 42 to 30 in favour of Sridevi so far.

          Lamhe leads Khal Nayak 6-3
          Pukar leads Janbaaz 8-1
          Mr India leads Parinda 7-2
Sadma leads Aaja Nachle 8-1 (my sole vote here for Aaja Nachle as I have not seen Sadma)
Hum Aapke Hain Koun leads English Vinglish 6-3
          Chandni leads Prem Pratigya 7-2
          Chaalbaaz leads Tezaab 5-4
          Gumrah leads Dil 5-4

So overall right now we have 6 Sridevi quarter finalists to 2 for Madhuri. So by default Hum Aapke Hain Koun will not face Pukar in next round as things stand. The last 2 matches are tight so it can change once Madhuri fans wake up and stop dreaming about her and actually vote for her films 😀

  114. Final 20 hours to go. Looks like Lamhe, Pukar, Mr India, Sadma, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Chandni, Chaalbaaz & Dil are heading through. So looks like 3 Sridevi Vs Madhuri matchups and 1 Sridevi Vs Sridevi.

Tezaab getting knocked out here is a bit of surprise if it happens! I’m missing votes of quite a few.

It’s turning into a bit of a Sridevi show at moment. Two guys who found their manhood yet to vote LOL.

    Like

    • Personally i feel Lamhe is overrated. I mean Lamhe pales in comparison with a movie like Silsila. The younger Sridevi was irritating and Anil Kapoor lost his manhood by shaving off his moustache which was his only asset in songs with Madhuri.

I chose Khalnayak because it was true blue entertainment. Actually getting the tickets for the first day was as prestigious then as getting a tix for Wimbledon final or World cup finals. I got it then and the experience i had was similar to what Rajnikant gets. The movie rested on a thin story line but had some amazing songs, great acting by Madhuri and Sanjay Dutt had to play to the gallery which he did with panache.

So am surprised that Khalnayak is struggling against Lamhe. So those who have not voted, please do else.

      • you left me with no choice. Under God’s no-longer Green earth would I have chosen AN or SADMA. SADMA is a life-altering performance from Sridevi; though the last 15 minutes, when Sridevi reverts back to her irritating voice and acting, put me off, the time that she was in character with being an amnesiac, well, pure gold standard. I CANNOT imagine anyone in her place..

And Hassan, well, just no words at all…

    • An jo – you just made me feel less Madhuri now.

      Like

      • No I am pointing out the difficulties of this context. SADMA is a true-blue masterpiece from hassan and Sridevi. It’s not the overall performances per se, but the film in totality. However, this doesn’t take an INCH away from Madhuri’s act..

And I have always said, in terms of filmography, Sridevi wins, not because she was better than Mads, but only because she was lucky enough to work directors from Tamil and Hindi at their peak…

        • Any vote counts for whatever reason. Manhood, a likeness for a song, a scene, overall movie, technical grounds, visual grounds, it’s shot in Mozambique whatever. Who cares, you need not justify why unless you want to!

          Like

        • JS sorry if I am sounding like a pain..what you have done here is commendable…I am only talking from the point of voting concerns.. and that;s why I brought in the fundamental conflict of innate talent versus filmography…

And again, manhood, etc.n are all just memories…but have they stayed long enough? In the sense, of that was all the quotient, then Mallika would be remembered by 100 year olds….does Parinda hold the test of time? Does TEZAAB still qualify as a fine entertainer?

          Like

        • I could still transport myself into Tezaab land for sure. I think if it’s part of your childhood it’s easier. Whether it’s any better than a film of similar kind today is different I guess. One edge for sure is music.

Also I’d say growing up in foreign land might have a bearing here. NRI’s in the main followed Bollywood through 80’s and 90’s, I myself only opened up to other industries from 05 onwards. The awareness of Sridevi’s regional films to my parents would be zilch as they only know Hindi. So that is another factor whereas people from South India will probably be better placed for an opinion on Sridevi.

I’d say Bahubhali is really in this sense a true blue icebreaker. Only on a diverse blog like this will you get a more informed opinion.

So maybe Sridevi has a huge edge here from indian voters who’ve seen everything and foreign voters probably haven’t (like me). I won’t be going out to see her non Hindi films. Not that interested in all her Hindi stuff either!

        • But to your point you can vote purely for talent or filmography – up to you. On both for me I generally prefer Madhuri. But it would be unfair to take my position seriously. I’ve not seen most of Sridevi’s films period. So I’m not remarkably passionate here of outcome!

Madhuri is for sure my favourite all time actress. But if push came to shove my favourite film or World Cup winner here would be English Vinglish. Such a lovely story, very touching. Reminded me of how I always use to correct, mimick my mum for speaking bad english. Oh what a fool I was.

          Liked by 1 person

        • That is the reason why it should have been independent contests for both. But as you are not too familiar with Sri’s filmography, you thought of making it a contest between the two will be easier.
English Vinglish touched you somewhat personally and it is also quite recent enough. Can understand your confusion.
But this is also quite interesting as it has made passionate discussions possible. I dont care for height or sexiness in a leading lady. I just care for the face and the expressions. That is why I like Savitri immensely inspite of her figure. I am a face person. Friendly faces attract me even if they are not perfect.

VCR collection and watched many times over. Voting against them would be difficult for me. My votes here are a bit unfair as I haven’t seen 50% of Sridevi films so I can only vote for what I’ve seen. On Dil, I like the songs a lot but I prefer Gumrah. Chaalbaaz I’ve seen bits and bops and no chance I’ll vote out Tezaab. In fact very few Madhuri films I would against Tezaab!

Keep in mind that sri film likemom and english vinglish is not even here in qt final which both were just about better than anything madhuri did, as far as acting is concerned.

How do i explain, there was a song “I’m a Disco Dancer” and an actor became famous, and then few other hits dance songs followed. Followed by couple very good roles in film like pyar jukta nahin, gulamie, etc… but that actor wasn’t compared to amitabh. Not sayng madhuri is mithun but just trying to explain.

Not sure of your age but if you were over 20 in 80s, you would understand what sri was to film industry and you would have understood more how madhuri rose to fame.

What’s the point of final vote here?

I am surprised by the result and don’t think it resonates the public reality. A close fight and Madhuri edging out is still justified. Even a “true” Sri fan will be shocked by the results.

These qualitative arguments on filmography can always be debated. Audience’s taste changes with generation. Silsila would be a blockbuster today. Sadma would not flop. Parinda would be superhit.

So the voting is skewed and many voted even when they had not seen one of the movie in comparison. It is like voting for congress no matter who is the candidate.

I am sure if done in a more inclusive public platform, the popular vote will be against Madhuri’s movies.

Naveen, You havent lived through 80s. Sri gave umpteen hits and Blockbusters from 83 to 86. Just check BOI and see yourself and they themselves are missing data of some movies. There were years in 80s when she had 4 highest grossing movies every year.
It all changed in 87 after Nagina which was very close second highest grosser of the year and Highest profit maker of the year by a big margin. She again had 4 movies in top 5.
Her BO success from 83 to 87 itself is more than entire career of Madhuri.
And here i am talking about bollywood only, she was only actress/actor ever to be number 1 in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu for 10 years continuously. No other actress could ever be undisputed no 1 in any of these industry for 10 years continuously..

It took her marriage with Boney kapoor , a string of big flops like Roop ki rani, Banjaaran and Heer rajhna And HAHK’s legendary success for Madhuri to be undisputed no 1 actress.

Her 87-93 periods were all female dominated roles. She was not acttress but Male superstar and second highest paid actor after Amitabh bachchan. where big actors played supporting actor and she played double role in many of them. She did most number of double roles. Filmmaker relied on her.

She made comeback in 97 for her last movies before sabbatical. And you can watch Judaai and Dil toh pagal hai. And decode yourself which performance was more deserving for Best actress award that year. Actually, Dil toh pagal hai winning so many undeserving awards made me lost trust in Filmfare.

The semi finals are awesomely placed!
    Mr India 6-5 Sadma
    Lamhe 6-5 Chandni

In the event of a tie, Mr India goes through above Sadma as it’s had more votes in total through World Cup (in fact it won the group with Sadma in same group). Lamhe will go through too for same reason of more votes.

So as of now, Sadma and Chandni need to turn it round and win the matchups and NOT TIE.

I have a different idea — put up a series of polls (which superstar you like the least, which actor (not star) you like to watch, which director, music etc) to evaluate everyone’s personal preferences towards films. And offer a persnalized report at the end of it. A cinematic version of the Rorschach test, if you will.

        • It’s partly predicated on the idea that we all have certain pathways to cinema. Some people, rather a vast majority, access films through the lead stars. Some find solace in a good story. Others are more inclined towards a wholesome experience or a predilection for a particular genre (comedy is gold as far as Hindi cinema is concerned!).

I’m actually quite interested in knowing this spread. Perhaps once we understand what is it that drives our choices, we can move forward and modify them — consciously. In effect, access cinema through different pathways.

        • @Saket – The thing is that its a noble idea and i wud support it whole-heartedly. But once u lay out ur intentions straight-forwardly even before embarking, u may find v few takers who wud sincerely volunteer to be a human guinea pig! 😛

          Introspection isnt v popular notion.

  160. I think Jay u consider these:
Every actor’s (male/female) THE best film:
For eg: Sridevi – choose one from three – Chandni / Lamhe / Sadma
    Big B: Deewar / Zanzeer / Don
DilipKumar: Devdas / Crap A / Crap B (ha ha just kidding, he has many great films to choose from)
and like that…..that would be really interesting.

    Sadma leads Chandni 7-4…

And WOW on total votes before final they are 49-49.

So MY VOTE wins the tournament in event of tie!!!!! Crucial then for a decisive winner, I don’t want the deciding vote here as I have not seen Sadma so I might retract my vote depending on how things pan out here…

  177. In a poorly watched final, Sadma has defeated Chandni 8-3.

Semi Finals were the show stealing matches in what ultimately turned out to be the Sridevi World Cup.

  178. Madhuri Dixit clearly has a brilliant collection of throwback memories, which we are glad for, BTW. The 51-year-old actress often treats us to delightful old photos and Thursday is one such day. On Instagram, Madhuri shared a photo of hers, which appears to be from the sets of 2002 film Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam. “Capturing memories on the go. Throwback Thursday,” she captioned the sepia-toned photograph, in which she can be seen navigating the busy streets with a camera. In the photo, Madhuri is dressed up in a traditional look – draped in a saree with gajra in her hair – just the look she sported in the 2002 film. She co-starred with Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan in Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam.

Meanwhile, here are some of the early comments that arrived on Madhuri’s Instagram: “Beautiful and still beautiful,” said an user while another added: “Gorgeous.”

Here’s what Madhuri Dixit posted as a throwback Thursday treat!

  182. I prefer Sridevi the woman who can hypnotise you with her raw innocence and killer eyes and untouchable versatility. Box Office wise she is ahead, She had tonnes of women orientated film that turned out highest grossing movie, Tohfa was women orientated but it was sridevi who played the bigger character, Nagina was highest grossing solo movie in 1986 behind karma which was a multistarrer that also had sridevi. HAHK wouldn’t of been successful without the team salman and sooraj bharjatiya who were know to give big alltime grossers like MPK, that would mean Madhuri role could of been done by another actress and same result.
