  8. BO update: Zero opens at 50% plus occupancy in morning shows
By Bollywood Hungama News Network, Dec 21, 2018 – 12:24 pm IST

Shah Rukh Khan‘s mega Christmas release Zero has opened fairly well across the country. Released across 4380 screens in domestic markets, despite the drop in temperatures, Zero has opened really well in North centres. It has got about 50 per cent plus occupancy almost everywhere. There are areas, especially in Rajasthan and North, where the film is playing to nearly packed houses in the morning shows.

ZERO had got average advance on the account of bookings opening late in many centres. It is expected to clock Rs. 30 cr. on Day 1. The Zero makers have banked well on the holiday season which includes a bank holiday. This ensures a good opening to the film.

Apart from Zero, another movie, Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), is released in five languages. Primarily a South film, it does not have a pan India appeal. The occupancy for KGF is as low as 10 per cent. Most plexes have shows post noon for KGF. But having said this, the movie has a great scope in South and will pose a great competition to Zero.

Zero Box Office Day 1 Morning Occupancy: And finally the wait is over, as the much-awaited Zero has hit the screens. Amidst the huge fanfare, the movie has taken a splendid start at the ticket windows. Being a comeback of Shah Rukh Khan, the fans flocked the theatres to catch their beloved star in a different avatar.

The movie has taken a splendid start in the morning shows across the country by recording an impressive occupancy of 45-50%. Talking about the major cities, Zero has stormed the screens in Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad, by registering an occupancy of 75-80%. The response to get even better in the evening and night shows owing to the decent reviews and word-of-mouth.

Zero has taken a good opening of 30-35% in its morning shows. The openings numbers are generally good at most places but not huge. Obviously many Shahrukh Khan starrers have taken bigger openings than this film but this is a par opening for this film.

The film is a huge release and easily the biggest ever for Shahrukh Khan not just in terms of screens but the capacity is huge and very close to capacity of Thugs of Hindostan. the only difference is that around 200-300 of the low grossing cinemas in small centers are not there for Zero and these hardly make a difference to the overall number. It is the third biggest release ever after Thugs of Hindostan and Tiger Zinda Hai.

The opening in terms of occupancy is a little less than 2.0 (Hindi) but the release is wider and more importantly the ticket rates are far higher than that film which mean despite occupancy being a little less it should collect higher than that film.

The film had a good trailer though Shahrukh Khan is a midget in the film and this could eventually turn out to be the USP depending on the content of the film but as far as opening is concerned it is a bit of a hindrance. The music of the film is good but generally songs which can look good in the film and no chartbuster types and then on top film has no action.

Initially the only big plus was Shahrukh Khan and its on him that this opening has come and its come despite poor films like Jab Harry Met Sejal, Raees, Dear Zindagi and Fan behind him. The film is a growth film and that will depend on public reports but Saturday may not see huge gains as growth films generally do as its a huge release and maybe the release is actually too big for a non action or mass comedy film. But this is how it goes nowadays with big films going on the most screens possible.

But it will be Sunday which is the crucial day for the film and there it will have to show a big jump in business to really get the best out of the Christmas week.On top the film seems to be catering more for the family audience than the youth and its on Sunday when the family audience really comes out.

ToH hindi tracked day one of 45 cr, add another 2 cr from dubbed version and YRF pushed that 47 cr to a neat 50 cr day one. But Red Chillies is going to take all this to a new level now … with boi quoting 1-2 cr less than that for ‘validity’.

It’s as though SRK is deliberately pointing out to some commentators and critics (remember the debate post Raees) that he is not just about embracing his Muslim identity on screen. Touche!

  24. Top Openings 2018: Zero 10th – Baaghi 2 And Thugs Rule
    Friday 21 December 2018 14.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Zero had the tenth best opening of the year in terms of occupancy and a Shahrukh Khan film should be doing better. The occupancy is lower than the last big release 2.0 (Hindi) but the opening day collections may edge past that film as it has higher capacity and far higher ticket rates at multiplexes.

Thugs Of Hindostan is the biggest opening of 2018 and is the only BUMPER opening of 2018 along with Baaghi 2. Thug Of Hindostan released on a national holiday while Baaghi 2 was a a minor holiday. Sanju and Race 3 (pre Eid) took EXCELLENT openings on non holidays as did Gold and Satyemeva Jayate on a national holidays. The rest on the chart below can be classified as GOOD openings. Fourtteen films have taken GOOD or better initials and there is one more release to go Simmba and it remains to be seen what happens to that.

The top openings of 2018 are as follows. The film opening wider is given precedence for ranking

    1. Thugs Of Hindostan – 65% (4700 screens) (NATIONAL HOLIDAY)

    2. Baaghi 2 – 57.5% (3500 screens) (HOLIDAY)

    3. Sanju – 55% (4200 screens)

    4. Gold – 52.5% (3050 screens) (NATIONAL HOLIDAY)

    5. Race 3 – 50% (4300 screens)

    6. Satyameva Jayate – 45% (2550 screens) (NATIONAL HOLIDAY)

    7. Padmaavat – 42.5% (3750 screens)

    8. 2.0 – 37.5% (4150 screens)

    9. Veere Di Wedding – 35% (2200 screens)

    10. Zero – 30% (4450 screens)

    . Badhaai Ho – 30% (2000 screens) (HOLIDAY)

    . Raazi – 30% (1800 screens)

And even if they were to change, they would have changed for Race 3 as well! It’s still an apples to apples comparison.

Besides, just where are the screens even equal to Race 3 in any of the metros apart from Kolkata?

        • Exactly. Assumption is same for both. Unless one is suggesting one movie will have higher spot booking than other? In the absence of proper data this is best one can do.

        • Jay I cannot believe you are saying this..you are an expert in bo..how can you refute footfalls and say advance gives better indicator of actual occupancy..I am.not saying it doesnr give but if you have footfalls why not use it…

        • There is no data to prove your hypothesis, Krish. Noida is just one centre! And who knows if that data is fudged or not?

          Like

        • I didn’t say it’s better I said it’s consistent. That’s all.

And how can 1 city like Noida determine 25Cr? What’s more logical?

Using that Noida data, Zero could be 40Cr according to producers!

Every data needs to be scrutinised, Saket just posted advances at same time for both movies- that is consistent. How he uses that thereafter will give a clearer picture. I would like to see your calculated number too. 25Cr is based on what?

Actual collections – what Taran use to give is best
Footfalls is next but then you needa ticket assumption
Advance needs ticket prices and spot booking assumption
          Every layer needs some scrutiny.

Noida on it’s own will derive such a huge spread.

          Like

        • Noida is one centre but by evening the guy will post data for many centres and you can make a judgement. And regarding fudging that could be the case with advance data too..I am saying use both data and not just 1 data..to give a better representation…for example in bms itself there are 48 shows of zero between 4 PM to 7pm but boxtopview says 40 shows..anyways my idea was just to improve your model. There was nothing to it other than that

          Like

        • Ok I will see in evening then. Whenever I go to bollytrick it only shows Noida.
Fudging can happen anywhere agree. But then it’s pointless debating whether it is 20Cr or 25Cr without submitting to a source or number of sources. I’m not picking on you. I would like to see how you arrive at Day 1 that’s all.

          You surely have something right?

          Like

        • Well then how are the footfalls more in bollytrick? It depends on a lot of factor..by the logic you are using based purely on advance movies which sell more on current tickets will go for a toss. So something like G4 will never even reach close to a race 3 as G4 had poor advance but did phenomenally well in current sales…the best way to get a reasonably accurate system is to place emphasis to footfalls..there can be no if and but in footfalls …yes race 3 also will have current sales but at a multiplex in north south or east it is more likely current sales are better for a srk starrer than Salman whereas in a place like rajasthan etc it will be favoring salman more..I am.pretty sure collections in Bangalore south east and north will be better for zero unless it crashes from now..simply because these are circuits srk usually does well on day 1 and north because it is a ALR movie…take footfalls you will arrive at a better model

          Like

        • I am.pretty sure collections in Bangalore south east and north will be better for zero unless it crashes from now..simply because these are circuits srk usually does well on day 1 and north because it is a ALR movie

I will dispense with the myths one by one.

In Bangalore, Zero has roughly half the screens of Race 3 due to competition from KGF. It’s not possible for it to outgross the latter.

In the North and Mumbai, the two biggest centres in terms of the number of shows, the advance has been way lower than Race 3 along with the fact that it has LOWER number of screens. Very unlikely that spot booking will overcome a deficit where Race 3 has 2x the amount of advance.

ALR’s best opening till date, all over India, is 8 crores. That too for a sequel! That’s how much clout he exercises at the box office.

  31. It’s presumptuous to assume the end of Salman, SRK and Aamir together. Nicely clubbing in SRK is disingenuous to say the least. His last big success is 5 years old.

    Nice trick whoever rip’ed altogether.

That handing of torch moment happened to SRK way back in 08. Since then he’s been fighting to reclaim his throne. Of course Ranbir, Ranveer, Varun lie in wait. But till they deliver or someone retires you still see the same story.

Just like it took Bachchan to retire for new breed to prosper – a seminal moment is consistency for these young guns. IMO SRK was gone a long time ago. These are just extended prolonged periods. Salman and Aamir have done their Messi/Ronaldo show for 10 years. 2018 – Modric emerged, it’s a bit like Akshay…too old to dominate beyond 18. A young gun like Mbappe or Neymar like Ranbir, Ranveer or Varun is best option. But as Messi scores a hattrick last weekend, the great one is still about. Don’t rule out Salman and Aamir still doing damage for 3 years for example.

I’m glad for Aamir that he is bypassing all this box office stuff for Netflix. If that venture is successful, watch the cavalry join small TV.

    • Akshay was expected to do longer than Khans at his own pace and level so he will continue for couple of more years and his fall will be more gradual because of his less high peaks and high velocity.

But the “Khan” era will end if Zero were to underperform. So it is important for Sallu and Aamir to pray that Zero becomes a hit because a Khan in the fry will help the clan. Else the perception battle will be lost.

The Opening of Simbaa is going to shock everyone. This will be second blockbuster of Ranveer Singh.

      • Haha. I agree on Akshay. If he was 5 years younger he could have a ‘reign’, but right now it’s Lady Jane Grey type reign.

I don’t agree on this ‘Khan’ perception. The surname has helped each throughout career to help each other in bad times. Salman and Aamir have ruled since 08 by any logical metric. SRK has been a beneficiary via surname only for a decade. But this chirade will continue till retirement as fans will always have hope. Hope is pretty much borderline miracles now. It’s Xmas! Season of miracles!

        • Yes it’s helped all. But Aamir has 1 flop and he’s down with the other 2? Give me a break! Salman’s got 2/3 disasters. I’ve lost count on SRK’s recent history. But now we rip altogether?

Aamir’s bigger than this. Script sense will always win or god given talent. He will be back. Give him 1 chance. Salman’s had 2 chances recently and many through 00’s. SRK is flopping good directors now. Aamir has 1 flop, deserves a bit more.

        • Agree on Aamir. He is too good indeed esp on his creativity and sense of universally appealing cinema. That’s why it is all the more important for Aamir to do a cinema and not a TV series on Mahabharat. Just for perception.
A TV series at this stage where Saif Ali Khan is reigning will give a completely different signal, unless the TV series is of the level of Baahubali or atleast GoT. Both i doubt due to the budget.
Hence a big announcement for Aamir is needed to get the juice flowing.

They set the ball rolling by negative whatsapp messages, twitter, fake polls one or two days before the release. The film ends up with less than 150 cr. They rake up crores. It maybe even an international racket. They may buy out even some critics and websites. Not only TOH but any big movie. Why 2.0 was stopped in its tracks? Why Zero received that kind of negativity even before the first show?
It is better to turn to web series as the chances of sabotage will be nil. And star in a film occasionally if one badly wants . Dont go overbudget. Dangal was 70 cr. It would not have lost much even if it had failed. Satellite and music rights would have come to the rescue.

Seems the 2nd half is really messed up. I just don’t get it. They do watch the movie before it’s releases, they can’t see that something is wrong and make appropiate edits?

Everyone should stick to hirani formula, have comedy thru out the film, not just 1st half. If you’re making big films.

Or, follow shetty formula, which are short and again comedy thru out or something like singham world, action thru out.

    • Hirani is formulaic but he always has a story to tell. He understands a storybook, beginning, middle and end. It’s so basic. There are good storytellers. ROM, Hirani, Bhansali but like what Saket said once they get a big star it can go wrong. Stardom can be a poisoned chalice. Fans want to see the same thing for some reason.

If a fan of Manchester United right now, 20 years of dominance/happiness/bragging is now opposite. I’m happy being a Spurs fan as in my lifetime we’ve never seen success. The chase is more fun than victory!

      • But to your point, they should at least get some of the basics right.

I don’t think Race3, TOH or Zero not coming out right is due to big star being present.

Fans are not asking for “Give me a boring 2nd half”.

Movies have been made with big stars thru out the history, think of movies of past like Naseeb, where there’s not 1 big star but multiple stars in it and all worked together nicely and not only that, even the supporting actors would have solid defined roles. In fact the big stars of past were more needy than of current lot because with current lot, they are somewhat cautious because a lot of them are acting as producer too.

    • I pointed 1 thing earlier, would like to repeat that all the bunch of movies SRK signed are 3 years old when he was in different mindset. Zero is also movie signed during that was also 3 years back. Its the last movie he signed and has NOT signed any new movie in last 3 years. This is the LONGEST in SRK career where he has not signed a movie. But the next movie he appears to sign is Rakesh sharma biopic which is sureshot flop. It might be critically good movie but it will not commercially success. It may or may not happen now. But it will not be the movie to save him.

SRK should take a break of 1 year and then sign a movie or two. Either ways, his prime innings has ended with Zero.

SRK is very good with directors and he gives them moon and stars if they ask for and trusts them 100% without much interference and then they get carried away and messes up the project. He’s not the star who can get ‘Best’ of the director but he’s be the dream producer and obedient star and give do everything to make them happy and then forget that movie making is serious business. ALR will never been on the sets and project where he was treated as superstar living the dream and snapping a finger gets him crores in a day. That ruins even the best of directors and this one proved it.

Either ways, I have not watched it and don’t know if I can watch it over the weekend and by then its too immaterial to watch it but just might catch it to see the hullabaloo as I did with TOH.

And i am not saying all of it is fair..there is targeted propaganda also. And in that category I will put all khans together. In whichever order anybody wish.. Akshay, ajay, ranbir, ranvir all r in safer zone if you ask me..

imo, netflix or amazon, online is the better possibilty..wider audience, lesser chances of trolling killing it, greater freedom to work with, even if someone protest, they cant come and break your theatres. And no pressure of BO. I think net films make a great case for themselves.

        • But how does all that make it playing it safe? Because SM still exists for Netflix. Mahabharata is a huge risk. Going Netflix route simply gives it a more professional backing than some Reliance or Ambani. One still needs to act or direct it.

I don’t think anyone is breaking theatres for films like Race 3, TOH or Zero. People are disappointed period. They expect more for the price of the ticket. And trolling is part of the game now. The bar is always higher for those at the top.

spending crores and leaving it out there at the mercy of some twitter trolls must be giving nightmares to many!

on mahabharata, i see it as a great opportunity, once the time constraint is also off, and with the new vfx fully utilized, its a sureshot bargain. there was so much talk about mohanlal as Bheem in a Malayalam adaptation of mahabharata, but it seems shelved now.

      • The only movie in recent times which SRK really interfered was Chennai Express and Happy New Year. I know this first hand. He helped some during Raees and FAN whereas Dilwale is all Shetty and JHMS is all Imtiaz(Srk in all his life has never played a womanizer till JHMS and its not a role which will find easy acceptance). Zero is almost all ALR and Himanushu and Srk helped only in VFX arena. He said in an interview, I didn’t want them to make SRK movie but I wanted to be part of their world.

Even Srk might be thinking.. the screenplay doesn’t make sense to me but if ALR and Himanshu says its good, maybe its truly good as they have more connect to audience than me. So, he’s in a tight spot.. listen to his instincts (which are going wrong) or listen to directors (who goes wrong). As I said earlier that all these small time writers, directors get spoil with SRK productions and don’t deliver. Its not interference and every time its easier to blame SRK especially who don’t follow Srk at all.

        • SRK is producer and actor. The buck stops with him. He has to change not others. This is cold hearted but truth of life, there are no freebies. I would question your sources because everything seems to centre as a staging for SRK being the victim. It’s basically never his fault. No one says put 200Cr into vfx of dwarf in love triangle. No one says put 150Cr into superhero movie. No one says etc etc. When RCE is producer, I’m sorry but SRK is the architect of his own failure or success. The CEO of a company at some points has to take responsibility of his own company orders and decisions. It happens in any industry.

If fans just repelled for 6months, he will realise the path back. But supporting him like this is a self defeating prophecy. Aamir fans absolutely raged at him for TOH so much so 3 weeks afterwards he is apologising (rightly or wrongly). He is taking responsibility for his own destiny. SRK isn’t, he wants hand me outs or easy wins. I hope Hirani does not oblige as he’ll get ruined by SRK’s current hit rate.

        • If you realise my point. He apologised to his indian audience and is accepting responsibility. In doing so he is correcting what he thinks went wrong so that a non NRI audience may find more acceptance. SRK is boasting about reviews.

They both handle bad situations in different ways. Aamir is trying to rectify things whilst SRK is not acknowledging anything, he’s oblivious to it. It’s up to you how you view each solution. I know what I would rather do.

In a nutshell what Z is saying Akshay, Salman and Aamir have done. Didn’t Salman have Reshma Shetty as an adviser on films that rekindled his career. And after losing her he went back to listening to his family and is now giving 2/3 disasters. Whilst Akshay employs Shetty, he prospered. Having sounding boards in big positions is not a new phenomenon. Aamir has researchers by all accounts. When he works with Netflix, be assured he will be better for it. I’m sure the professional aspect will be even better. For all the billions SRK makes he’s stuck around with KJo and Chopra’s, hardly inspiring. I never hear anything about RCE beyond a world class VFX function. What use is it without good advice. Employ some good people around yourself to protect your position.

Every CEO, president, PM will not make decisions all the time alone. They typically employ even smarter people then themselves to do the job! They are usually better speakers or motivators or managers or leaders etc but rely heavily on good, structured advice. All this seems a miss on SRK.

I hope you get what I am saying.

Aamir’s collaboration didn’t affect adversely anyone from proven to debutant directors, most of the times it’s opposite that their best work is with Aamir from Ashutosh, Farhan, John Matthew, Rakeysh Mehra, Reema Kagti to Nitesh Tiwari and as a producer too.

        • I could list at least 10 negative/harmful traits SRK has harboured into the industry and at least 10 positive/courageous ones from Aamir but I’ll be on a hiding to nothing!

SRK has created the downside by in large himself. Only he can change it now. Don’t expect directors to bail him out. First make the right decision yourself on script and get the right director onboard. And just give that person 100% control or employ some advisers to advise you on this. You are loaded dude. The list of bad decisions via RCE is growing as quick as blame game on directors. These directors are scapegoats it seems, too many examples now. There is no smoke without fire.

Follow the Mourinho sacking this week to understand what a cult figure who has lost his mojo can do to a big global brand. Arrogance is what Mourinho thrived on, ‘I’m the special one’. Such nonsense gives success but the moment you fail you are going to get hated on. And it’s worse if you’re smug about success and always looking at past success.

Shah Rukh Khan measures up. The visual effects lack continuity and he looks more like a dwarf in some scenes than others, his deformity occasionally more pronounced while he looks like a spookily smooth tiny-Khan in other sequences. The actor, however, glosses over this with a dominating performance and tremendous energy. Bauaa Singh is a severely flawed character made irresistible by his pluck, and it’s remarkable how much Khan brings to the part. And he remains the best lover in the business.

  55. The more I think I’m more curious Karan Johar’s behavior towards SRK in past 1 year. In 2016, Srk did the cameo in ADHM and also worked in Dear Zindagi co-produced by Karan. Then Karan fought with Kajol and Ajay Devgn who openly brought the fight in media by posting KRK’s phone conversation recording. Karan released book and claimed that Kajol will not be back in his life and how Ajay shouted him on the phone and gave dhamkis etc. KJo called SRK and told all and Srk advised don’t fight with Kajol and become friends but he was not in a mood to listen. Srk was not good with Rohit Shetty as well after Dilwale.

Cut to 2018, he went directly and announced Takth (with no SRK shadow also in the movie) and he’s now friends with Kajol and invited both Kajol and Ajay on his Koffee with Karan show and showed so much interest that he wants to be friends with Ajay. He’s full on friendship with Akshay too now whereas there’s no SRK on KWK this year again. The day Zero trailer was to release on Nov 2, he had no comment on it but promotion 2.0 trailer release for Nov 3 as if Zero didn’t exist. Then announced Simmba (which he produced for Rohit Shetty who is again not on SRK’s friend list anymore) on 28th Dec which no movie has released in last 20 years. Still nonstop promotion of Simmba without any word on Zero as the movie doesn’t exists. Rohit Shetty has been at least decent to say its not clash and so on whereas KJo is so silently hoping that Zero wraps up in a week for Simmba to do great business.

So, if anyone has been hinting any media tweets and trolling before movies released and any bigger hand in there, all roads lead to Karan Johar IMO. How can anyone claming to be close freind will not tweet anything about the movie from trailer to songs to release, anything at all? Something happened internally in last 1-2 years for Karan and SRK or maybe Karan is moving to greener pastures where’s there is money and success. Srk on the downward trend no longer interests him or helps his brand or career.

These films have been made on 1/10th & 1/5th the cost of these biggies respectively and yet look and feel visually superior and skilful. Even BB1 had superior and well utilised visuals and CGI (esp in the 2nd half) compared to the overused and tacky Vfx in BB2 and 2.0

So Finally SRK entered Amitabhs Mrityudata..Kohram and Lal Badshah phase. There are many similarities between Amitabh and SRK. ‘Zero’ script sense in one among them. But Amitabh is Far-Far superior actor then SRK. Amitabh was 48 in 1990. SRK was 45 in 2010. Both face similar phase around this age. Amitabh’s main films after 2010 are mentioned below.

    1991 Ajooba
    1991 Indrajeet
    1991 Akayla
    1992 Khuda Gawah
    1997 Mrityudata
    1998 Major Saab
    1998 Bade Miyan Chote Miyan
    1999 Lal Baadshah
    1999 Sooryavansham
    1999 Hindustan Ki Kasam
    1999 Kohram

So..Khuda Gawah is Ra One. Both overhyped. Took Great Initial then fizzeld out. BMCM is CE. Both comedy and Hit. Thats it. Amitabh reinvented Himself after Mohabbatain. SRK will reinvented by ????????

There is absolutely no comparision with Amitabh and anyone else living or dead. And i am not saying this just as a fan.

However i related to the comparison that BOB is trying to make.
It is not to say that those films fared same. It is more about how Amitabh too fell from his HIGHs from 1991-1999 easily his worst phase and was a decade long. SRK has entered this zone since last 3 years post Chennai Express. Other might disagree but i think SRK was still giving good grossers even in flops. But Dilwale onwards, things changed.

Problem is SRK gas at least 7 more years now because no matter what he tries, even if he does Dangal, people will not accept him till he starts looking different and play to his age in a movie led by the current superstar. Amitabh did the same and his performance matched and was better in those films even though the current superstar took most of the credit.

So watch out for SRK in 2023-34. He is a better actor among the Khans so he will bounce in a new avatar.

    • Even in his most horrendous phase of Mrityudata, AB gave record initials during his 50’s with films like Major Saab and Mrityudatta itself. AB in his peak was a riot and had far greater stardom than Srk in the 90’s and 00’s. Even his so-called flops (like Shaan, Shehanshah and Agneepath) would sell over 1.5 crore tickets, a feat that many of Srk’s Super Hits are yet to achieve. Despite being branded as an “Angry Young Man”, AB managed success in almost every genre, be it romance (Kabhi Kabhi), Comedy (Namak Halal, Chupke Chupke) or thrillers. Srk despite trying his level best has never been able to convince the audience in a genre apart from romance (the early phase of Baazigar and Darr notwithstanding, as the current audience rejected even that avatar of his in Don 2, Fan and Raees respectively). Even in his mid 70’s, AB continues reinventing and redefining cinematic charisma and spontaneity with films like Piku, Pink and 102 NO. There’s no equating them. Not a chance in a million.

It’s doing comparatively well in the South — especially Chennai, but with very low show count. It’s about the same as Race 3 in Bangalore and Hyderabad.

In Kolkata, where SRK’s popularity made sure he got more shows compared to Race 3, the drop is drastic. It has gone from 62% occupancy in the afternoon to 44% at night. This is clearly the effect of a bad WoM.

  63. #BLBestOf2018: Akshay Kumar, Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor – Here’re the most successful actors of 2018
Successful actors of 2018 who rocked the box office

2018 is over… yes, it’s time you accept that fact. And now that you have allowed yourself to accept it, we are here to tell you who were the most successful actors of this year. 2018 has been a year of content. If films had stories, audience watched it in hordes. That helped many actors like Rajkummar Rao, Vicky Kaushal, Ayushmann Khurrana get their first Rs 100 crore films. Even Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth got their first Rs 100 crore films in their career. So this year has been truly educational in many ways. But never has Bollywood seen such an amazing amalgamation of content and box office. The films which were supposed to be made for a niche audience did crackling business at the box office while biggies failed. So these are good times and the actors who saw better times at the box office this year are.

Akshay Kumar (Pad Man, Gold, 2.0 – Rs 370.29 crore)
Akshay Kumar is one actor who has maintained his string of successes at the box office for many years now. Trade has named him the ATM of Bollywood because, every movie of his earns at least Rs 70 crore or more. 2018 began with Pad Man, a film which got major acclaim but didn’t quite see much box office adulation. Still, since all Akshay films are made on a controlled budget, Pad Man didn’t lose much. His Independence Day release Gold went bigger and earned over Rs 100 crore, despite sharing screens with Satyameva Jayate. And finally when 2.0 released last month, Akshay catapulted to the top of the tally.

    2. Ranbir Kapoor (Sanju – Rs 342.53)

Ranbir Kapoor silenced everyone this year with Sanju, the highest grossing Hindi film of 2018. Post a few debacles like Jagga Jasoos, many had started doubting his ability to make big box office bucks. Sanju, a biopic on Sanju Dutt, broke many records for the actor himself. He got his life’s biggest hit ever.

    3. Ranveer Singh (Padmaavat – Rs 302.15)

Ranveer Singh has been on a high since the past few years. With Sanjay Leela Bhansali, he not only casts a spell on the audience but at the box office as well. Padmaavat was no different. Despite many protests, agitations and violence, the film released last January and became a raging hit. It hadn’t even released at many major centres owing to the controversy but yet it managed to score Rs 100 crore and more within days. Ranveer is here to stay… he is now one of the most successful young actors of the industry.

    4. Ayushmann Khurrana (Andhadhun, Badhaai Ho – Rs 211.79 crore)

Every year, we see someone emerge victorious and take you by surprise. Ayushmann Khurrana was one such actor. With two films, both bonafide hits, Ayushmann has managed to secure a place in the top 5 successful actors of this year. That’s simply incredible! He has a way of choosing scripts others might think twice about. Andhadhun had him playing a blind pianist caught in a mess while Badhaai Ho saw him as a son grappling with the fact that his parents have an active sex life.

It’s SRK’s narcissism: plain and simple
And he is delusional that that he is still a saleable star. Somewhere he is insecure and this reflects in his interviews, where he gives himself away when there are comparisons of him with younger actors!
His answers are off-putting. People might claim he’s being funny in his disdain about others but there’s always something off about it. He is, in a way, very serious in dissing othere.
He’s forgotten that the times we live in are not dependent on a once popular formula. What he needed to do was a complete makeover in image like Akshay and Aamir from what they were in the 90s
And he’s no Salman to have that kind of mass popularity to pull anything off in a certain image
Media and PR have led us into believing his relevance as a big star
But to be honest, he lost that edge long time ago. All his films that even got big initials and ultimately succeeded were disappointing on a general level.
There was a Chak De in between, the only exception I can think of since Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Mohabbatein (yes, it’s been that long!)

His films and the interest in them just doesnt cut it. He needs to fo back to his Darr and Baazigar days and reflect on what went wrong for so many years.

Amitabh called Yash Chopra asking for a movie…can u even imagine. It requires lot of guts. I mean he had everything even when he was down. But he wanted to survive and more. These are not a common personality traits.

          1998 Major Saab
          1998 Bade Miyan Chote Miyan
          1999 Lal Baadshah
          1999 Sooryavansham
          1999 Hindustan Ki Kasam
          1999 Kohram

If you notice, few of these movies were not bad. I would rate Khuda Gawah, Akayla very high among others. Lal Badshah was probably the lowest when he tried to be like a Mithun and hoped for a hit in Bhojpuri belt (which was then very lucrative but bhojpuri movies had become better). I still like them but now i know why people did not find anything new on these films.
Amitabh was then trying hard to do diverse genres but by and large sticking to his action hero image.

        • I agree with Tony. I think you’re missing some crucial points here. I don’t know Bachchan’s history but let me give it a stab and others can over rule me as more productive knowledgeable folks. It doesn’t appear to me that Bachchan had media support, awards, PR machinery at the go to get to where he was. It was god given talent plus hard work plus everything around him was the best around – writers, directors, musicians, singers, whatever! It’s the perfect cocktail and recipe for greatness. It’s like Messi having Guardiola, Xavi, Iniesta and all to make merry. But Messi even without all them still found a way to make merry! God given talent won no matter what. It’s a bit like an irresistible force.

SRK has created an image of success. He’s talented IMO. His best ‘acting’ performances ‘some’ may consider as good or better than his contempories. BUT when they are randomised events over an incredibly long period THIS hasn’t been the key to his success. It’s the PR, awards (buying of), media support that has supported his good times, the network he built with production houses like Dharma, YRF, his own that ALL have pigeoned holed onto his romantic image. Such an image has a limit. To me the footfall analogy (Sorry to bore people with such things, they are not ‘direct’ comparisons just analogies) here is Jose Mourinho. In a twist of fate Mourinho himself is dellusional. His fate, status, personality traits are all too similar. He got success of his own back. A wonderful story at a small club like Porto. He then went to Chelsea and on day 1 declared he’s the ‘special one’. (Point 1. As young star both took success to head and declared themselves as great). He won at Chelsea, got sacked – fine everyone has a disappointment. He then goes to Inter, wins the treble (unbelievable. Point 2. This is the crazy period of success where both are ‘proving’ how big they are’. Everything seems to work). Then he goes to Madrid, Chelsea again and Manchester United. These 3 positions he still wins things but it’s clear a sea of change has occured and he’s missed the boat. (Point 3. Others have caught up in their own ways. New styles have come to rule the roost). Good PR is no longer the be all or end all. People prefer humbleness and cocky attitudes will struggle. (Point 4. Mourinho just lost the biggest job he ever had. He is a cyclical manager who in the 3rd year just loses the plot. Everyone else is blamed! From female doctors, to expectations to other teams spending more to his players to everything except HIMSELF).

Point 5. Last one. Mourinho leaves and he says. I have a future without Manchester United and they have one without me. He WILL NOT CHANGE. In a world where Guardiola, Klopp, Pochettino existing and playing exhilarating football people, players have better homes. Mourinho is still Mourinho and SRK is still SRK but they both look like egotistical megolomaniacs to me. Some fans too. In defeat you MUST accept and not blame everyone around you.

Now your big B story enlightens me, him going to Chopra etc. If true it’s humbling but shows class too. SRK doesn’t seem to have this option. Everyone is desserting him. His talent is overrated, PR has moved on. And just like I have Guardiola, Klopp or Poch…we have other stars, Netflix, Amazon. Alternatives and crucially better ones are there. SRK has missed his boat a very long time ago. It’s a Mourinhoesque decline – one where you need to step back and comnect the dots of how it happened. Why is obvious – combination of arrogance, complacency, not changing, stubbornness, blaming others, spiting others etc. The list of bad human behaviour traits is endless for me. The style of Mourinho no longer works. He can still succeed but he must change. SRK too but it’s no longer reinventing himself. That’s what Aamir did at 35 what not. At 53 you need dignity, humbleness, acceptance or a freaking miracle. Above all YOU SHOULD KNOW WHAT’S GONE WRONG BY NOW. If you don’t and your fans don’t, GOOD LUCK!

        • Very well crafted on SRK’s arrogance and his behaviour which while built his image of success is now a reason for him slowing down. Amitabh at his peak was also reportedly humble. Though there are stray stories of his ego battles too like with Kishore Kumar ( a big reason for his success), Shatrughan Sinha, Fall out with Gandhi family, etc. Jaya still says that she never found a man as indecisive as Amitabh to which he too agreed. I am sure Big B was also human but yes humble even then.

“At 53 you need dignity, humbleness, acceptance. Above all YOU SHOULD KNOW WHAT’S GONE WRONG BY NOW. If you don’t and your fans don’t, GOOD LUCK!”

Bang on…this template needs to be used by SRK. Can he do- YES. Does he want to do – Time will tell. I think he would only because he is self-made.

        • I personally graph SRK’s decline from OSO. Reinvention opportunities if smart happen while you’re on top or young enough to get to the top. Aamir has done both. Lagaan he was young enough, since then he graphed out small successes leading to a string of all time grossers to NRI overseas domination to China domination. It all happened slowly but step back and evolution has happened. He’s changed many things. Importantly trust is a big trait. Everyone around him trusts him, he trusts others. He’s collaborative, every production has worked, he has seminal moments etc. And now Netflix has knocked on the door with China and TV. Akshay reinvented later into social films and on his own terms. Medium budget films, safe economical propositions and stings of successes. Salman is traditional like a born rockstar and people have underestimated his stardom (me for sure). No one could predict this 2nd innings, in fact I would have predicted it’s length to be shorter but he’s still around. He’s still a big fish. SRK could have reinvented when Hrithik arrived (competition must challenge you, a threat is a perfect time to reinvent) or when he’s on top (numerous points like 98, 04 or 07). Even 98 I say simply because I truly believe this KJo has given SRK many things but all the mannerisms I dislike can be connected to KKHH. That’s a personal opinion. But everything that is dislikable back then is furthermore now. You just step back and see it. Now it’s too late.

I see Bob isn’t taking this message as goodwill-it basically is. It’s free advice. I’m not kicking him down. I’m giving a mirror and presenting a path to outside chance of comeback. The GOOD LUCK is to his fans. This is not pleasurable for myself. I’ve worked for one of the GREATS in American corporates, GE and it’s down in the dumps (in 2 years a share price of $30 is $7). In 2 decades, half a trillion of value has been lost. It happens. A great beacon company but in an industry now dominated by tech giants it needs it’s own kind of introspection and reinventing.

I’m not licking my lips at all. If you believe that I stick you in the same arrogant bucket your idol is in.

  66. All SRK need to do now. Shun his ego. Do films like ‘Sahir’ on Sahir-Amrita pritam, Jolly LLB-3, Hindi medium type films. Landing cost of the film should be around 60-70 cr. Don’t use VFX. Just simple films with good stories. Hhiriskesh Mukherjee and Amol Palekar type film. He can act. He is damn good for that type of films. He lost viewers Trust. Even his fans are not turning for his films. I don’t know what is wrong with medium budget film. He has seen superstardom. Now time to take a back seat and should work in content driven medium budget film. For that first control ur ego SRK.

I used to say this for Abhishek bachchan. Though he didn’t get that much success but for me he he is one of the finest actor and human being. So what happened if Abhishek didn’t get success. Only the films are not life. Just see a person as a whole and if you see Abhishek as a human being he is far good then the many successful people. Still people mock Abhishek. • But is SRK even this kind of human being? The traits are so obviously not like Abhishek. Abhishek was doomed from start. The enormity or chance of real success like today’s superstars was very unlikely. Even if gifed with his father’s talent it would be tough. History for him was always going to hold him back. If he found stardom guarantee media would say it’s Big B driven for a start. His being humble human are basic things everyone should have. It’s just the stars we love don’t show this enough and Abhishek under the backdrop of lack of success presents these traits well. It’s almost easier to like such traits from his prism. Such traits from success may come off as fake. One cannot assume Abhishek would be like this if he was successful, one can hope and guess he would but there is no guarantee. Success can get to anyone in a bad way.

If anything he’s lacked the killer instinct a serial winner has. But his is a complex debate. Too many if’s, but’s and maybe’s with the enormity of having Big B as father. Living up to a standard that you see day in day out is not easy! How many famous sons overachieve above their father’s legacy when their maternal or paternal was considered one of the greats if not the greatest. It’s improbable. Godfather 2 always happens once in a blue moon.

Its not being a sadist. Lets call a spade a spade and see the man for who he is.

Aamir doesn’t live in the 90s and strike poses that SRK does in so many event shows around him, be it a press conference, an India Today conclave or a talk show. The reason People aren’t accepting him in roles other than his “image” is because he doesn’t want to. He has become what you call gimmicky to such an extent that it has affected most of his films.

One fact, that all these experts ignore is this: Who, and where, where the directors available for Bachchan during his lean period? Veeru Devgan, Tinnu Anand, Mehul Kumar, K.C. Bokadia?

Compare it with what the Khans have here! Kashyap, Motwane, Raghavan, etc., etc., who have the mind-set to channel into one’s super-stardom and one’s acting/innate talent! What choice did Amitabh have? MUKUL Anand was the only promising guy! And he died!!

One film, just one film, KHAKEE substantiated the importance of Bachchan as a Haley’s Comet of a talent, and we talk of comparisons?

For the first 3 weeks of AGNEEPATH, a completely violent film, and with NO affiliation toward family audiences, was running house-full and I got the tickets in the black-market, this was his power when he was supposed to be down-and-out thanks to the Khans’ ‘fresh’ blood!!

Today Khans are also are forced to give way to fresh blood like Ranveer, Ranbir. One will experiment with fresh blood. When Bachchan dethroned Khanna, he was offered everything and he saw the success that no one had seen. Khanna dethroned Jeetendra. Rishi could never be the superstar inspite of his looks and talent.

A person can be the greatest actor but age will not permit him to play some roles. An MPK. a QSQT, a DDLJ, a khiladi, a Zhakm, a Bobby. Once the fresh ones capture the imagination of the young crowd, there is no looking back. They will replace the older brigade and they will get some interesting roles too because cinema evolves with new directors and new story tellers like Hirani, Mehra and the like. I am talking about mainly mainstream ones.

Hema Malini and Rekha could not do roles that Rani, Kajol, Madhuri, Sridevi did.The young crowd simply will not accept them in lead roles. And Rani, Kajol cant do roles meant for a Deepika, Kareena, Priyanka. Alia and others are slowly taking over from Priyanka, Kareena while Deepika still is wanted by big film makers.

  72. Zero has under performed on the first day as to what was expected from the film but the number is pretty healthy at 20 crore nett. The opening day is similar to 2.0 (hindi) with multiplexes doing a bit better than that film but smaller centers being less. It is also similar to what the likes of Dilwale and Raees did on day one and the Salman Khan starrer Tubelight and all these are under performers.

It should have got higher than 2.0 (Hindi) as this genre gets more crowds in the evening than an action film but that push did not really come in the evening. Most circuits are lower than 2.0 (Hindi) but Zero has that added business from South where 2.0 (Hindi) had a minimal release.

The film would be out on day one if it was an action film or mass comedy as they are frontloaded and it remains to be seen where Zero goes. It will be of utmost important to be up on day two with an upward trend. If the trend is downward then the film will be in big trouble after just two days.

The dubbed film from the South KGF had fair collections for a dubbed film of 2 crore nett. The film was decent in Mumbai circuit as it collected over 1 crore nett. North was a no no but it might have some chances in Mumbai circuit.

  74. Lol have any members posted their review of Zero or seen it?

I saw it earlier today. It is basically two films. The first half is a good ALR type of movie set in a small town with hilarious dialogues and great acting by supporting characters like SRK’s dad, friend, and the shaadi.com guy. Not much happens plot wise, but it is damn entertaining. Liked a lot of scenes. There was one cringe worthy scene around “SEX”. I have never cringed more in a theater, and I was with friends my age. I don’t get why SRK and Aamir of late think the audience wants to see how horny they are on screen. And it always involves either Anushka or Katrina lol. Songs were good, Mera Naam Tu was the best and stood out. Husm Pancham was wasted though.

Second half is like FAN. Completely unnecessary and a disaster. And a stupid shift of setting to the US. Crazy how now for me, SRK + Foreign location = disaster. I see it as him giving the Red Chillies team a paid vacation. Basically, the first hour and 40 minutes of the move are good. At 1 hour 40 minutes is basically when SRK realizes he loves Anushka and goes back to her. At that point, they should have just had a 20 minute resolution, and ended the film at 2 hours like a normal ALR film. But no, that is too logical, so they inserted an ENTIRE space training montage that was 30 minutes. It’s like Red Chillies used the second half of Zero to practice for the Rakesh Sharma film, showing all the space training and rocket launches. Katrina-SRK story is rushed, although I liked them on screen more than SRK-Anushka. All those cameos are a waste. Everyone gets 2 irrelevant lines. The SRK-Salman song was a complete waste, it was just random. It was like in the past when you had a song right after intermission because people still aren’t back in their seats.

Acting wise, SRK was very enjoyable, classic SRK. The man has screen presence. Of late, SRK has been playing shitty characters. They’re all dicks. This one, the JHMS one, superstar in FAN, HNY, even Raees. He needs to play people who aren’t assholes like in Dear Zindagi lol. Why would anyone want to root for his characters or sympathize with them? Also, I closed my eyes for a second, and thought I was watching Gaurav for FAN or the alter ego from RNBDJ. Same voice modulation, accent, etc lol. Katrina did really well, but it’s not going to be a Cocktail moment for her. She looked great though. Anushka was so damn annoying, I couldn’t stand her. Her acting was annoying as was her character. There was no need for her to have Cerebral Palsy. Anushka can’t pull off real acting like that! They should have just made her handicapped tbh. It would have made the film shorter too. Madhavan is good in his cameo, and Abhay Deol just plays a generic multiplex actor. VFX, sets etc were all excellent as they usually are in Red Chillies films, but script, story, and conviction were also poor, as they are in Red Chillies films. Instead of a 200 crores budget and 3 hours long, this should have been 100 crores and 2 hours.

All in all, 4/5 first half and 1/5 second half. Overall, 2.5/5. Better than JHMS at least lol. But seriously, how hard is it to show your film to 5 other people?? Anyone would have told them the second half was garbage. I’m sure they could have edited the material they had to at least salvage the second half, instead of ruining the whole film. This gives me no hope for the Rakesh Sharma film. The space scenes in this film were so boring, I saw people falling asleep. The Rakesh Sharma director is an unknown random, and giving him 250 crores will end poorly. Only thing that gives me some hope is that Ronnie and Siddharth Roy Kapoor are co-producing this. Small time directors may loose all sensibilities when directing SRK, but I’m sure those 2 producers won’t make the same mistake, especially when it’s their money on the line too.

The highly anticipated last ‘Khan’ movie of the year – Zero starring none other than Shah Rukh Khan along with Katrina Kaif & Anushka Sharma has finally hit the theatre screens yesterday and things don’t seem to have gone very well! The Aanand L. Rai directorial has received mix response from the critics as well as the audiences and that clearly is affecting the box office numbers.

Talking about today’s morning occupancy, it registers around 30-40% of the cinema halls. It has unfortunately seen a drop as the occupancy laid in the range of 45-50% yesterday. Moreover, today being a Saturday – the percentage should’ve only risen up for things to work as expected but alas! No wonder the word-of-mouth is playing the lead role in this case as a major chunk of the audience consists of those who felt disappointed after watching the movie.

₹ 12.5 Cr in Karnataka alone is a monumental number. Its at par with a lot of star studded Hindi films at a pan India level. Once again makes you question where Bollywood film makers are going wrong. If a regional Kannada film manages to collect >100 Cr nett in Karnataka alone, Bollywood biggies should ideally be nothing short of 500-600 Cr nett pan India considering the reach of the Hindi language.

    • KGF trailers was a lot better than zero trailer. Is it surprising that KGF opened at 18 cr and producer figures of Zero is just 20 cr? Take into account Red Chillies’ record and the opening is perhaps in 17-18 cr range only (Saket’s analysis points to that too, if we take into account the 25 cr ‘tracked’ for Race 3 day one disclaiming its producer figure).

As per reviews, KGF looks good but story is stale. So 100 cr is not given at this point. But nor is zero getting to that landmark. Meanwhile, Simmba will sail thru (even if KJo/Shetty funded zero trolling). But instead of blaming Kjo/whoever, the main problem lies in making a weak film in zero.

      • KGF is being adored by the audiences in Karnataka, esp here in Bangalore. It has good chances of crossing 100 Cr in Karnataka alone. Anything apart from this is an added bonus. If Simmba ends up being a damp squib, KGF Hindi would be the biggest beneficiary, giving it an extended run and a shot at 50 Cr lifetime in the Hindi version. This for sure is the Baahubali of Kannada cinema which in itself was the Sholay moment of Telugu cinema.

  88. A top male star who’d verbally committed to starring in a mini-series about the relationship between a spiritual guru and his devotee may not end up starring in the show after all. According to sources, the actor was fascinated by the true story of the guru and the impact he seemed to have on this married woman who went on to become his biggest ally. He agreed in principle when a young filmmaker approached him to take the role, but insisted he could only make a firm commitment after the script was ready. It helped that the director had managed to rope in the most sought-after young actress for the other role. The actor was keen to work with her.

But the project reportedly came close to falling apart when the actor quoted a fee so high that it scared off the international streaming giant that will bankroll the show. One learns that the actor is unwilling to budge on his price. The streaming company has asked the writer- director to go ahead and complete the script anyway because it is still interested in the project. Which means there’s a good chance they will try to rope in a different actor to take the lead.

The same streaming company lost another credible artist recently because the producers of a hit series on its platform were unwilling to shell out the big bucks she asked for to star in the second season of the show. The actress, regarded as one of India’s best, was approached for a key role, but the offer was recalled once they discovered she wouldn’t come for a dime. The actress has told friends privately that she liked the part and would’ve taken the job, but expected to be paid a fee that was commensurate with her position. She realised the producers were hoping she’d do it for a pittance since most actors would give an arm or a leg to be on the show. But no, that wasn’t going to work for her.

3- Aamir was not down and out in ToH time if many thinks so that his and SRK’s position is same then fine.
4- Though Aamir was not down at the time of ToH still if someone can dig my comment where I mocked him or took sadist pleasure I am man enough to own my mistake and say sorry. Pls some one dig my old comment where I mocked Aamir.

2 You feel SRK’s arrogance hasn’t harmed anyone? The very definition of arrogance is “unpleasantly proud and behaving as if you are more important than, or knowmore than, other people:” – does it sound pleasant or positive when the definition itself has ‘unpleasantly’! That’s just one definition; but SRK has humour, quirky etc. Arrogance or haughtyness is nothing pleasant at all! (Arrogance is overbearing pride or haughtiness. If your friends are constantly complaining about your arrogance, you might want to lose the haughty attitude and try to be more humble. – another definition). I think you mean confidence rather than arrogance.
3 He wasn’t down. One flop though was enough to flip and jolt a lot of people.

  92. The fate of Race3/TOH/Zero has proven that streaming platforms have finally broken the back of Bwood. In the last 12-18 months, Netflix/Amazon et al have steadily increased original Hindi content offerings; and unsurprisingly, we see the demise of avg to below avg movies. Also, observe that only the success of content driven bwood cinema has increased, so called European Cinemas as per BOI.
No wonder the likes of BOI are hammer n tongs against steaming platforms. They provide an alternative for entertainment at a tiny percentage of the cost of a single bwood ticket. Why would anyone want to spend Rs 1000+ for the theater outing of a family of 4?
Social Media is just an information source, to gauge what to expect. One can hardly blame trolls for movie debacles. If there were no alternatives in Streaming, even the worst SM reviews wouldnt prevent a person from venturing into a theater.
However, a movie better be superlative in order to rake anything over 100crs now. Otherwise, there are tones of avg to below avg offerrings on Streaming platforms, that one can watch in the palm of your hand anytime/anywhere.

Problem is that the Indian audience currently an MB of Aamir in the cinemas will not tolerate. They want it from the south, like Bahubali, and they reject it from Bollywood and especially from a socially critical Muslim. So Aamir remains no choice.

      • I beg to differ. Netflix is not a plague. It’s simple economics. I am a family of 2 watchers of content. Right now it requires a cinematic adventure for us to want to go and watch in theatre. 1 movie experience can cost up to £25 for 2 people. Netflix costs £7 per MONTH. I can watch unlimited content for 3 months to breakeven and I am one such person who is not armoured by visuals too much. I can replace date night with dining or other things.

I love cinema and still watch it, but have to become picky on what I watch.

A movie on Mahabharata is unique and different. It deserves top billing i.e theatre. But Aamir on it in India and his history with controversy attached etc is a risky proposition. There is no reason why both together cannot happen in some format.

Economics is a win-win on Netflix. But I will always watch a LOTR type film in theatre. There is always a price though. I am lucky that price is not increasing where I am. Streaming is not taking over either. Good films work in theatre. At least 15 have this year, barring Race3/TOH/Zero a lot of success for indian films this year. So it’s years before cinema is finished. And finished will never happen. Cinema will always be around just it needs to be economical.

Popcorn itself is the highest premium product priced out there. In UK it costs something like 15p to make this stuff but you get charged £4+. It’s a joke! Now as a gujji, we get our bag of popcorn from supermarket and walk into theatre with it as we are cool…

But in big budget, like MB we are talking about, there are various thrills and effects that script writers make for the theatre viewing which can be experienced only in a big theatre.

These can be experienced in fairly reduced effect on television even on 65″ 4000K HD format.

GoT would have done wonders to my viewing if it had released in IMAX.

Not really. One a person crosses the age of 18, his/her visual and aural faculties start deteriorating anyway. So unless one is stuck in a time-warp, you are not experiencing sound and visuals as they would be, in their purest form.

      • Its simple economics.. theater, steaming, video, etc are all just competing for the limited ‘Entertainment’ time quota enjoyed by paying folks. And as stated by Saket/JS, one can pretty much enjoy visuals driven movies on a 65″ TV in the comfort of one’s lavish drawing room. Why bother going to a cinema to blow up one’s wallet?
As for MB is concerned, you are right that MB needs the absolute best treatment and release on the big screen. And the best part of it is, the Trolls of SM cant nitpick on anything, cause the story is already known, consumed, mentally ingrained in the minds of a billion people. So people will be going to a theater ONLY for the visuals. So here is the business decision: What if they spend 1000crs and are yet unable to create a product that at least matches up to circa 2010 Hollywood VFX? Is that a risk to be taken?
Conversely, they can go with diminished visuals and choose Netflix, where they can actually have a 50-75 part series, that delves deep into this massive epic and its characters. People will perhaps enjoy that more than a truncated 3 part Cinematic experience.
They actually need an MCU kinda deal. Have a main 4-5 part ongoing movie, with several other offshoots in between that explore each character. But for that, they need a huge commitment by many different actors. They might need more than half of bollywood to concentrate only on this. Is that even feasible, given the larger-than-Everest egos of everyone in this industry?
They could actually do the MCU thing in a more cost effective manner with Netflix, than with cinema.
Whatever be the result, the Business Decision and Risk Parameters are very very unpredictable to say the least.

As i said the problem and good thing with MB is that it started with Aamir the actor. This changes the equation as he will decide who will be director and other stars. Usually he has not done these things before. Even TZP which he directed was when Amol Gupte had done everything.

Problem because it should have started with a brilliant director whose name would get all the actors he wants. Someone like Rajamouli.

Khans or akshay, ajay Devgn fresh blood was needed. How long can one man carry the burden of satisfying the audience? Today Khans are also are forced to give way to fresh blood like Ranveer, Ranbir. One will experiment with fresh blood. When Bachchan dethroned Khanna, he was offered everything and he saw the success that no one had seen. Khanna dethroned Jeetendra. Rishi could never be the superstar inspite of his looks and talent. We can see a clear pattern.

Hema Malini and Rekha inspite of preserving their looks could not do roles that Rani, Kajol, Madhuri, Sridevi did.The young crowd simply will not accept them in lead roles. And Rani, Kajol cant do roles meant for a Deepika, Kareena, Priyanka. Alia and others are slowly taking over from Priyanka, Kareena while Deepika still is wanted by big film makers.

Even with singers this happened. Rafi reigned for a long time. But Kishore Kumar’s fresh blood dethroned rafi due to people loving the latter’s freshness as a singer while rafi could still sing perfectly. People need variety and they embrace variety. Same way
Rahman replaced Ilayaraja. Kamal and Rajni are on their way out.

We may feel nostalgic and feel sad. But the show goes on with new players.

Some very good actors and singers never got their due. And that is more saddening.

I have many beautiful old sarees, yet I am excited to get a new saree.

    • Asking for variety has nothing to do with quality. That is why we find that most of the young crowd quite surprised at the adulation the bygone ones get. While quality remains the same, tastes do change. So when one accepts the quality, they may not be overwhelmed because their taste accepts something else. There are some who accept both equally and I am one of them.

Not only this, but Ranveer also has a lot of films lined up in his kitty for the coming year. Recently, the actor treated his fans with an ask Simmba session where he expressed his wish to starring in the sequel of Aamir Khan and Salman Khan’s hit movie Andaz Apna Apna.

When a fan asked the 33-year-old actor if he plans to star in an out and out comedy film, he said, “hoping for something crackling to come along! very much looking forward to something in that space! Andaz Apna Apna 2?!” with a wink emoticon.

  105. Kashyap has a number of tweets praising Zero…

    • Yeah but nothing concretely in favour of Zero. Anand L Rai produced both Mukkabaaz and Manmarziyan, so that might have something to do with it.

If you read between the lines, it’s qualified praise — more for the ambition rather than the execution.

    • I will bet that kashyap is trying to kid himself, while is knows better. A few more zeros and he will disassociate himself from rai altogether. And i dont think he cares abt the zeros in his paycheck from rai productions anyways. He is born for netflix stuff, with no strings attached.

Zero has struggled to make much of an impact on day two as collections are set to come in the 16-17 crore nett range. There will be a 15% drop from the Friday when the film had to show this much growth to stay in the race despite an under performing day one.

The two day figures will be around 35-36 crore nett which is just not good enough and the writing is on the wall. The film has surprising done best in UP and Bihar which are normally the lesser performers for Shahrukh Khan starrers but it is probably the UP setting helping these parts.

Its another huge blow for the industry just after Thugs of Hindostan and unless a miracle happens for Zero its going to be a bad year for the industry theatrically. The euphoria of the huge extra revenue from digital is a blessing but getting huge crowds into theaters remains the big problem.

I think this is a key message. SRK, for all his ambition, has not transcended the ambit of his initial stardom. His films and his roles are still catering to his original fan-base. There is no crossover audience to speak of. I say this without watching Zero, of course, but this is the sense that I get.

He has his trademark mannerisms, which define his stardom and his appeal to his fans, but they also alienate another section of the audience. There is not even an attempt to appear different. There are some exceptions like Dear Zindagi (even in this film, his dialogue delivery is reminiscent of his previous romantic roles) but by and large, he has been content to play the same character, or a variation of it, in film after film.

An actor, at least a real one, looks forward to challenges in his/her craft. What has been so challenging about films like Dilwale, HNY, Chennai Express, Ra.One, JHMS or Zero? Where is the drive to push oneself? If anything, it represents a pretty cynical mindset revolving around Box Office success. Perhaps this is the reason why he doesn’t have a crossover audience.

It’s not that people who are not his fans love to hate him. It’s more about finding something relatable in his work that stands out for others to appreciate. Otherwise, the refrain is: If I’ve seen one SRK film, I’ve pretty much seen everything he has to offer. His diehard fans may be OK with that, but why should others follow the same diktat?

    • As an example, SRK plays (or is supposed to play) a typical guy from Meerut in Zero.

From what angle does he resemble one? He has the same hairstyle, the same mannerisms (the song Mere Naam Tu comes to mind) and the same excessive energy to speak of. What’s really different?
