  1. https://boxofficeindia.com/report-details.php?articleid=4547

Zero has struggled to make much of an impact on day two as collections are set to come in the 16-17 crore nett range. There will be a 15% drop from the Friday when the film had to show this much growth to stay in the race despite an under performing day one.

The two day figures will be around 35-36 crore nett which is just not good enough and the writing is on the wall. The film has surprising done best in UP and Bihar which are normally the lesser performers for Shahrukh Khan starrers but it is probably the UP setting helping these parts.

Its another huge blow for the industry just after Thugs of Hindostan and unless a miracle happens for Zero its going to be a bad year for the industry theatrically. The euphoria of the huge extra revenue from digital is a blessing but getting huge crowds into theaters remains the big problem.

Megastar SRK becoming ordinary fan, dwarf etc is as big a same blunder as what Kamal Hasan did to lose his stardom to Rajnikant(Salman Khan)

    • Don’t think Kamal Haasan ever wanted to become Rajnikant.

And SRK is clearly not attempting anything different, or different enough, to destabilise his connection with his core fan base. To compare him with Kamal is a bit farcical, to be honest.

      • Saket, to your last posts on the old topic… That’s exactly my problem with him. I feel bored with the same poses and expressions but that’s exactly what brings the fans to him (I think).

I’m more concerned with the question where all his fans are. He always wins when it comes to voting, his fans are everywhere in large numbers. Wouldn’t they also have to appear in large numbers in the cinema? This logic doesn’t open up to me.

I think only his fans show up in the cinema. Not a lot of neutrals, which explains the opening numbers. Online polls, I’m not sure of. There is obviously the possibility of manipulation in online polls.

So his fans are probably already going to the movies…I always had the feeling that they are much more because they seem to be everywhere! But the neutral mass is missing and that’s his real problem, I understand.

Here in Germany there are felt only SRK fans, in forums etc.. When I ask cinemas if they want to bring another film, the answer comes, it’s only worth it for SRK. But it’s about to change a bit.

The problem with being a one dimensional romantic hero is that once you pass the 40’s, you seize to remain a romantic hero anymore & need to innovate & improvise. Rajesh Khanna failed to do so in the 70’s, Srk has failed to do so now.

        • What I meant was that Kamal has been too much of an artist to settle down in Rajni’s mould. If becoming a megastar would come at the cost of experimentation, he wouldn’t opt for it. He can’t help his intrinsic calling there.

And in response to RGV’s tweets, Aamir has practically done the exact same thing that RGV is preaching against. He has experimented in all sorts of genres and has still experienced the highest Box Office success as well. So what gives?

Salman, for all his fan following, hasn’t been able to breach Aamir’s numbers in 10 years. So RGV’s analysis doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

        • The element of surprise is no longer there with SRK both acting and film. Raees at least had a kick ass trailer.

We are flogging the proverbial dead horse. Content is king to get biggest successes. Relying on stardom is a finite strategy. For some it carries on for longer than others but if you churn out good content you will last longer. Agree with all your comments Saket.

          SRK is boring now IMO.

        • Popularity is not about doing ten 50 Cr grossers & accumulating 500 Cr in a year. Its about selling tickets & being the face of a movie, delivering huge grossers, record openings & highest annual grossers. Despite acting for 26 years Akshay has zero highest annual grossers (HR has 3, Ranbir got his first in 2018 within 10 years) & just 1 record opener in Singh is King. It took a Rajnikanth/Shankar sci fi for him to cross 175 cr (a feat achieved by Krrish 3 five years ago), that too post GST with 1000 more screens. Even in terms of profits, Padman is coverage, Gold is a loser & 2.0 is commission. Sanju alone has made more profit for its investors than all these 3 films combined. The fact is, post RR Akshay did some retrograde cheap mass entertainers like Boss & Khiladi 786 which antagonized the A audience. To win them over he did niche films (his best phase in terms of content) between 2016-18 which isolated his original fan base in the B/C centers (the kind who patronize pungent junk like RR & Welcome). Now he has no option but to do small films or else run the risk of giving big budget losers like Gold. Unless he gets Bhansali or Hirani to sign him of course, since right now they’re the only Bollywood makers who can get 200 cr out of an Akshay film.

  5. I am posting Saket’s 2 comments from the last thread here for reference.
They point out clearly what neutral fans feel about his acting.

Most of the reviews mention that Zero is strictly meant for SRK fans. At least the ones that are negative take care to point that out.

I think this is a key message. SRK, for all his ambition, has not transcended the ambit of his initial stardom. His films and his roles are still catering to his original fan-base. There is no crossover audience to speak of. I say this without watching Zero, of course, but this is the sense that I get.

He has his trademark mannerisms, which define his stardom and his appeal to his fans, but they also alienate another section of the audience. There is not even an attempt to appear different. There are some exceptions like Dear Zindagi (even in this film, his dialogue delivery is reminiscent of his previous romantic roles) but by and large, he has been content to play the same character, or a variation of it, in film after film.

An actor, at least a real one, looks forward to challenges in his/her craft. What has been so challenging about films like Dilwale, HNY, Chennai Express, Ra.One, JHMS or Zero? Where is the drive to push oneself? If anything, it represents a pretty cynical mindset revolving around Box Office success. Perhaps this is the reason why he doesn’t have a crossover audience.

It’s not that people who are not his fans love to hate him. It’s more about finding something relatable in his work that stands out for others to appreciate. Otherwise, the refrain is: If I’ve seen one SRK film, I’ve pretty much seen everything he has to offer. His diehard fans may be OK with that, but why should others follow the same diktat?

As an example, SRK plays (or is supposed to play) a typical guy from Meerut in Zero.

From what angle does he resemble one? He has the same hairstyle, the same mannerisms (the song Mere Naam Tu comes to mind) and the same excessive energy to speak of. What’s really different?

  6. This i something i really want Aamir to do and hope this really happens:

“Aamir has not seen a flop for a very long time. It does happen when things do not go according to the script. The failure of Thugs of Hindostan and Aamir’s subsequent admission for the failure of the film and apology to fans, there is a lot of contemplation and introspection taking place. When things are hunky dory, you move ahead as per plan. But when it is not happening that way, you do not know what to do. You look at what went wrong when you make a film like a masala potboiler unlike how Aamir chooses logic over magic in his other films. He is also slated to make the Mahabharata sometime in the future. Plus he has committed to old friend Amin Hajee to do a film for him,” says a source.

    Dec 23, 2018

    ************

Aamin Hajee is basically one of the writers associated with Lagaan/Swades. And this is perhaps the film that is/was planning to do:

    ************

Known for roles such as Baghi in ‘Lagaan’ (2001) and Bit Da in ‘Mangal Pandey: The Rising’ (2005), not many know that Amin Hajee is in a fact a very talented screenwriter who will soon venture into his first directorial. And news has it he has signed Kunal Kapoor and Kalki Koechlin as his leads.

Titled ‘Koi Jaane Na’, Hajee has planned to start shooting for the film in September. Mumbai Mirror reports a source revealing, “It will be shot majorly in Scotland in a month-long schedule with some portions in Panchgani later. Kunal plays a writer who doubles up as a vigilante.”

Apparently, Hajee will turn to his mentor Ashutosh Gowariker for support.

    Aug 2, 2018

    *************

But i have no idea what has happened to this film. This is something which will suit Aamir perhaps best (hopefully).

It sounds like a call, he says it more directly every day. It doesn’t sound anything like a soon MB and it doesn’t feel like he’s just being polite anymore. Very interesting!

  7. Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas hosted a grand reception-cum-party for their Bollywood folks in Mumbai on December 20, 2018.

Many B-town biggies and PeeCee’s friends turned up in full attendance to bless the newlyweds.

What caught everyone’s attention was the absence of B-town’s Superstars, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Akshay Kumar

Many speculations about the trio and their better halves missing the bash started floating in the media and the reason for the same was touted to be their past relationship with PeeCee.

But, if a report in DNA is to be believed, the ones who missed the bash, were busy with their work commitments.

The report further elaborated their whereabouts, Aamir Khan was in China for the promotion of his recently released film, ‘Thugs of Hindostan.

Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan were busy hosting a special screening of ‘Zero’ at their house Mannat in Bandra on the same night, as the film was set to release the next day, i.e. December 21, 2018.

On the other hand, Akshay Kumar was busy spending time with his son Aarav Kumar who is in India for his winter vacation.

KGF is excellent business on all formats with second day collections of 19.25 crore nett across India. The film had a little drop in Karnataka but that is still great trending and is only behind Bahubali – The Conclusion in that state. The Hindi version had growth of 50% apprx which is good and it could sustain on the weekdays. Mumbai circuit might end up with good final numbers. The all india collections of the film are over 37 crore nett in two days. The approx first day figures of KGF are as follows.

    Karnataka – 12,50,00,000

    Hindi Markets – 2,00,00,000

    Sunday 23 December 2018 13.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Zero showed a 12% drop in collections on its second day as it collected 17 crore nett apprx. This takes the business of the film to nearly 36.50 crore nett. The film really needed to grow on Saturday as though Friday was a decent opening day number as a whole it was not good enough for this film.

The surprise is UP and Bihar and these areas actually could do well as when a film falls 12% on an all India level then these areas fall 20% but here the fall in UP and Bihar is less than the major multiplexes and that too on a Saturday. It wont make much difference to the overall picture because in terms of collections they are just 12-15% of all India.

The worst performance is Gujarat which is not doing much more business than Rajasthan when it should be double. Normally these two trend pretty similar but not for Zero The two day figures for Zero are as follows..

    Friday – 19,35,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 17,00,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 36,35,00,000 apprx

There should be growth on Sunday but its unlikely that it will be 30-40% and may have to settle for collections in the range of the first day which would mean a 55 crore nett weekend which is poor number for such a film.

    • Read the review carefully tonymontana. Here are some excerpts:

The “logical” questions melt away because Rai and his writer, Himanshu Sharma, are in such firm control of the absurdity of it all. This is, after all, a film that opens like a Western, takes detours into the musical and the melodrama, before taking a jaw-dropping leap into sci-fi.

      Like

      • I believe if you play fast and loose with the term sci-fi, you can call Zero a sci-fi film. Rangan also termed 2.0 a sci-fi film. Interstellar is a sci-fi film. And so is Gravity. Just because an absurdist film involves a man going to Mars, it does not become a sci-fi film.

This film, even according to Rangan, is the theatre of the absurd. The challenge for the audience is to find some semblance of sense amidst this absurdity. And people can certainly make some sense out of it. But that’s just a different reading of the film.

That’s precisely what has bothered other critics of the film. They can’t seem to reconcile the absurdity with their tastes and expectations. And frankly, with a budget of 200 Crores, this film wasn’t meant to rely on a handful of critics liking the absurdist universe built by Anand L Rai.

On a side note, just finished watching Tummbad and I agree with Saket that this is the best Hindi film of the year. Easily eclipses my other favourite, Andhadhun, in that this isn’t an easy film to shake off

Deeply affecting at a psychological level. The background score is still ringing in my ears. This isn’t merely a horror film. It’s folklore style storytelling is one for the ages, might rven go as one of the classic stories ever written when critiqued fairly years from now.

Anand Gandhi may be “niche” as it is fairly easy to bracket unique voices in the industry, but what a unique voice he is! Tummbad beeds to be watched by one and all, and aim curious to know what others think of it in this group. Yes for a change let’s discuss its merits rather than beating around the bush for Zero and TOH’s “who gives an eff” prospects in China

    • Glad you liked Tumbbad so much, tonymontana.

What struck me most about the film was its visual panache. It really is a tale visually narrated, although how the producers were able to manage this much technical finesse with a shoestring budget must comprise a story in itself.

It is, of course, a morality tale about a demon God who is (partly) oppressed by a family that teases him with the grain that he so covets. It’s also a fable about rites of passage within a male patriarchy. The sins of the father are passed on to the son and then, the grandson. It’s also, rather overtly, a tale about greed.

But as good as the story is, the film’s strength lies elsewhere. As you point out, this film stays with you. The visuals are so captivating, the background score is so pulsating, the film enters your system and refuses to leave. This, in effect, is the purest form of story-telling.

The horror elements in the film also add to the visceral feeling. And from the first frame itself, it becomes a captivating experience. There’s also lots to chew upon. In that sense, it’s a very remarkable film — beautifully mounted, but also gives you cause to reflect. A rare gem, indeed.

Undoubtedly! I however found some of the visuals–those involving Hastar the weakest link in the film, and mind you, those were still good, just that the film scores extraordinarily in just so many other aspects. I wouldv’e preferred if they hadn’t showed the demon god at all.. well, except maybe in the final scene. Why not present him just as an urban legend: who may or may not exist. That may well have left a lot to the imagination and more to ponder over!

I absolutely loved the part about the grandmother at the movie’s start, that’s what kept me going. the film was extremely neatly conceived and narrated, and I reserve special praise for the kid who plays Vinayak’s son.

“It’s also a fable about rites of passage within a male patriarchy. The sins of the father are passed on to the son and then, the grandson. It’s also, rather overtly, a tale about greed.”

        — I agree, but I also found some reviews which called the film’s message rather simplistic about ONLY greed, and I’d like to add there’s more than what meets the eye.

I also see it as the Illuminati concept of how trading for one’s soul can promise one instant wealth but suffering till eternity. One can also make a case of why the film was set in Pre-Independent Era, and how its parallels can be drawn to the current socioeconomic scenario.

Zero under performed in the first weekend with collections of 54.50 crore nett. The figures on Sunday could not reach the first day number. The disappointment is what has happened on Saturday and Sunday. The opening was always not going to be huge though it should have been 20% better than what it was. Still this was not that action film or mass comedy which depended on the first day and could easily make up ground.

But instead of making up ground it lost ground. The drop in collections after day one tell its another Shahrukh Khan starrer which has got some numbers due to his presence with the content being rejected. The weekdays may get some numbers due to the holiday period.

The figures are better than Jab Harry Met Sejal and very similar to Fan which pretty much tells the story of the film. The first weekend figures for Zero are as follows.

    Friday – 19,35,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 17,00,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 18,25,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 54,60,00,000 apprx

The film has done best in UP and Bihar probably as the film is set in that world and these places tend to under perform for Shahrukh Khan. The collections in UP and Bihar are not blockbuster levels that it makes much difference to the overall picture but at least in these two states the film has managed average business which is better than other parts of the country.

Shahrukh Khan strongholds like West Bengal, Mysore and Tamil Nadu / Kerala have collected poorly as has Mumbai circuit. the Xmas factor could help over the next two days but the real level of the film will be known on Wednesday after the big holiday.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Zero has not done well in Overseas as it had collected in the $4.75-5 million range. Gulf has done pretty with collections close to $1.75 million. It was released on Friday rather than the regular Thursday and on fair value it would be the second best opening of the year after Race 3 in Gulf. USA / Canada will be around $950k and United Kingdom will do £300k apprx. Both have not performed but it could also be due to pre Xmas and collections should sustain till the New Year. But the film probably does not have the reports to really take benefit of thsi period.

The best market is Pakistan where it collected $525k apprx. It had the third best opening day ever here after Sultan and Sanju. The business from the five markets of United Kingdom, US / Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Pakistan will be around $4 million and $750k-$1M should come from the rest of the world.

It is the fifth best opener of the year but Shahrukh Khan is the biggest star Overseas (excluding Far East) and it should be doing much better. Dilwale had clocked $8 million a few years back on Xmas and even Jab Harry met Sejal crossed $6 million last year. Padmaavat is the top opener of 2018 and it is also the all time top opener. The top ten openings overseas in 2018 are as follows.

    1. Padmaavat – $10,590,000

    2. Race 3 – $7,790,000

    3. Sanju – $7,220,000

    4. Thugs Of Hindostan – $5,730,000 apprx

    5. Zero – $5,000,000 apprx

    6. Baaghi – $3,360,000

    7. Veere Di wedding $2,630,000

    8. Pad Man – $2,300,000

Zero crossed the 100 crore mark worldwide in three days and was the sixth best worldwide opener of 2018 but that is below the mark. The collections are below the mark in India and Overseas. It released before the holiday period and genre is not front loaded so 200 crore was probably out of reach but it should have done 175 crore and then have the reports to take advantage of the holiday period.

Sanju is the only film to go over 200 crore worldwide in the first weekend and even that was also non holiday and the genre was also not front loaded but that film had strong momentum pre release with a huge advance and even a couple of songs worked which does not happen with Rajkumar Hirani films. The other films ahead of Zero are Race 3, Thugs Of Hindostan, Padmaavat and Baaghi 2. These six are the only films to go above 100 crore in the first weekend.

The top ten openings worldwide in 2018 are as follows.

    1. Sanju – 203.57 crore

    2. Race 3 – 181.79 crore

    3. Thugs Of Hindostan – 166.54 crore

    4.. Padmaavat – 163.31 crore

    5. Baaghi 2 – 115.54 crore

  44. Zeeshan Ayyub To Avoid Big Budget Films For Some Time After Zero Misfires!
“Now, if somebody else has tried something, why are we after his life?,” he questioned

Asked about the problems, he pointed out: “There are many things. I never like my work. I didn’t like my work even in Raanjhanaa. So, I don’t want to give my perspective on the film. If I sit on any film, I will find loopholes. I think Indian films generally don’t work on logic.”

But he shared that, “We missed a bit of Himanshu’s humour in the second half of the film.”

His other release this year, Thugs of Hindostan, also starring Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan, wasn’t a box office winner either.

Now, Zeeshan, who started his Bollywood journey in 2011 with the biographical thriller film No One Killed Jessica, wants to take a break from big budget movies.

“I will avoid very big budget films for some time. The problem is that you don’t have anything at stake when you do these kind of films because most of the critics just talk about the so-called ‘A listers’. So, you don’t get to know about your performance from critics and not too much from the audience.

“I want to do characters which are important to the screenplay. I am also looking forward to doing some web series. Let’s see if things work out. Now, I will explore myself more. I was getting into a ‘secure zone’. My household is running very well now so, I think it’s time to take risks,” added the actor, who will next be seen in Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi.

  45. But one thing that worked for Zero is the stardom. With a star-cast consisting of actors that are already flourishing in the industry – Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma & the king himself, Shah Rukh, a decent opening was inevitable. The movie collected 20.14 crores on its opening day. As in the case of Simmba, Ranveer Singh undoubtedly is considered as a power- packed performer but when compared with the ‘Khans’ – we’re not sure! Also, it’s just Sara Ali Khan’s second film. So, that’s one thing that might be a drawback for this movie.

  46. Top 10 Stars Ranking:

No 1: Akshay Kumar – 2.0 is a game changer. His biggest hit 2.0 along with two other success in 2018 (Padman and Gold) is precedented by 6 Hits in last two years. This is very good run. a big hit was needed to break the shackle which 2.0 gave in its Hindi run. All eyes on Kesari if he has to cement his position. His inability to give Big Hits will keep this rank vulnerable.

No 2: Aamir Khan – Dangal released in 2016 and ToH was supposed to be bigger hit. However ToH flopped and this changed the equation for Akshay. With no release in sight, he slides one rank down.

No 3: Salman Khan – A force. Halo is gone post Race 3. Would need a blockbuster to sustain flurry of Akshay’s hits.

No 4: Ranveer Singh / Ranbir Kapoor – Simbaa can pust Ranveer above Ranbir if a Hit.

No 6: Ajay Devgn / Ayushmaan Khurana – Ayushmann is now a star with two superhits – Badhaai Ho and Andhadhun

No 8: Varun / Tiger Shroff – October and Sui Dhaga was average but past films keep it going for Varun. Tiger’s Baaghi 2 is one of the biggest hit.

No 10 : SRK – He needs to reinvent now.

    • I have maintained an unbiased ranking so far. Being a fan of Akshay, i was more strict with him and only when ToH and Race 3 flopped and his 2.0 gave him his career best hit, could he manage No 1 ranking. He has given 8 successes before 2.0 but that was not enough for him because competition were doing better.

      Like

      • A career best doesn’t qualify. It’s like a batsman suddenly scoring a century after so many efforts of getting close and when he hits a career best he is top of ICC rankings! No one will begrudge Akshay if he’s at #3 but if you feel he’s #1 already it’s 1 in a 1000 opinion. His openings don’t suggest it. In fact a bad WOM film like Zero is opening in similar range to 2.0. But Akshay’s record of hits is now clearly giving SRK a run for his money.

Forget Salman or Aamir, they are opening films at another level.

2.0 is not a seminal moment for a star to jump 2 places from 3 to 1 even if 1 and 2 failed. 1 failed for first time in years!

        Like

        • Yes, if they open big again, they will become No 1 again. But a flop will also have its cost.

          Like

        • 2.0 is a superhit in Hindi or some may call Hit+ depending on the standard. But a game changer in terms of cinema and also a huge leap for Akshay in terms of gross, though it is still not close to the highest.

But the momentum gained and the variety he is bringing changes the game a bit in his favour. If he had only one release with 2.0 and with same result, he would not have become No 1. But a rare movie like Padman and Gold becoming success along with the momentum of 2016-17 helps him.

Again, Akki is on a thin edge here. It’s not an outright No 1 which Aamir or Salman enjoyed over last few years alternately.

          Like

        • As genuine successes go including audience reception, Ayushman has to be top performer of the year (NOT TOP STAR). Biggest star’s overall are still Salman and Aamir. Biggest stars of 2018; 100% Agree with Rahul’s list.

I do agree with the Mr Reliable tag to Akshay. He is reaching a stage where a big flop hasn’t happened for some time. But 2.0 is a difficult film to conclude anything from really. It’s firstly not Akshay’s film. More Shankar and Rajni. But it’s worked in Hindi belt only so Akshay’s performance and visibility can be connected to it’s success here. Everywhere else it’s not done well. So if you take the good only from Hindi belt plus kudos you got to take some of the bad elsewhere. Can’t have your cake and eat it too!

Very likely to be at single digits today. First week looks like 75-80Cr. Rest will be 5Cr probably. The producer numbers for 1st weekend are showing better than expected hold for me. Sunday is better than Friday. Even the tweets of Jaiswals and Kadels don’t make sense i.e. manipulating is happening, but how much I have no idea! Because their occupancy reports suggest lower numbers than they are claiming as manipulation. So either their occupancy reports are wrong or they are downplaying the level of manipulation. In other words they might be inflating themselves! So I don’t trust this bs at all. It’s smug traders, calling other kettles black when they themselves maybe doing similar things.

KGF has done excellent business in the opening weekend as it runs riot in Karnataka. The weekend collections in the state are only second to Bahubali – The Conclusion. It has also done well in Mumbai and Nizam / Andhra. The collections in Tamil Nadu and Kerala are low. The Hindi version has done decent business over the first weekend thanks to good busines in Mumbai circuit and CP Berar. The trend is also good with solid growth on Saturday and Sunday.

It remains to be seen where the Hindi version goes over the weekdays but it should hold well over the holiday period and the test will be Friday as Simmba will strong in the areas that KGF is doing its best business. .The approx first weekend figures of KGF are as follows.

    Karnataka – 38,00,00,000

    Hindi Markets – 9,00,00,000

    Nizam / Andhra – 3,00,00,000

  55. Ayushmann Khurrana – Shoojit Sircar out of John Abraham’s football biopic, 1911?

Five years back, 1911 was to be made with Shoojit and John Abraham as co-producers and Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead. Khurrana had even roped in his brother Aparshakti Khurrana (a national-level footballer) to be coached in football.

But now, the long-in-the-pipeline project 1911 has finally been announced. And there is no Ayushmann and no Shoojit in the project. Instead, John will play the lead while his new favourite director Nikkhil Advani who is also directing John in Batla House, will direct the football film.

A pity that the project has slipped out of Shoojit’s hands. A self-confessed football enthusiast he vowed to cast only real-life footballers in the film.

  56. It’s been a strange year. The 3 Khans have faced disasters. Race 3 at 165cr (most probably inflated figures here), TOH at around 140cr and now Zero will struggle to get past 100cr.

On the other hand, the young guns who can throw in a challenge during the next few years, Ranbir, Tiger and Ranveer, have had massive grossers.

Akshay Kumar is the Mr Reliable of this year.

Ayushman Khurana is the underdog who has over-performed massively. Honourable mentions to guys like Kartik Aryan, Vicky Kaushal and Rajkumar Rao there.

Another huge surprise is that John Abraham, the non-actor with a series of flops before this year, ends the year with 2 hits.

If Simba is a massive grosser, then it most probably is Ranveer’s year.

If not, then IMO this may be the current order (for this year only):

    1. Ranbir
    2. Ranveer
    3. Tiger
    4. Ayushman Khurana
    5. Akshay Kumar
    6. John Abraham
    7. Ajay Devgan

      2. Ranbir gave the biggest hit of the year but lacks the momentum. He basically made himself as top star once again with Sanju. before Sanju, many were doubting.

      3. Ayushman and Tiger but will edge to Ayushman for sheer variety and velocity.

      4. Ranveer for Padmaavat. Will give him No 2 is Simbaa is a hit. If superhit or above, he will be No 1 for 2018 but not overall as Ranveer did not have a great 2016-17 like Akshay.

      • Naveen, I didn’t want to get into the 2.0 debate again. But a film sold at less than 80cr and earns 185cr is a solid hit IMO. If it isn’t then, the success of a lot of films need to be re-categorised.

I remember a few people denying the blockbuster status of Ghaijini once due to bizare economics they were trying to apply. I can bet they never applied the same economics again to other films.

I have yet to see any trade specialist call 2.0 in hindi a flop or commission earner anywhere. From BOI to Taran to the likes of Kadel, the figures were in similar range and everyone called it a hit at least.

        • 2.0 is a hit Rahul. Gold and Padman are not but Naveen keeps peddling them as. Call a spade a spade.
2.0 opened to 20Cr. So it’s hardly suggesting Akshay’s a #1 star! THIS IS WHY I CAN’T TAKE NAVEEN SERIOUSLY! It’s not april 1st today!

        • When we look at economics of these films, then at the time of release it was said that Gold would need around 120cr to break even. It did around 105cr. net (BOI figures) So, it technically is a flop. Anyway, the trending was poor.

Padman was reasonably budgeted. It was said it would be a hit at 90cr. It did around 80cr. Maybe something like average status.

          2.0 is a hit.

          Like

      • Some folks still call a commission earner, a big scale grand sci fi extravaganza with over 4000 screens and 180 cr collection as Super Hit. 2.0 in Hindi is nothing more than a Semi Hit. Boi is out of its mind. Even Ra.1 had similar footfalls to 2.0 Hindi.

But a rare movie like Padman and Gold becoming success along with the momentum of 2016-17 helps him to emerge No 1 star for 2018 and also in the overall Ranking which i have given above.

        Like

        • I called him Mr Reliable because he is the only actor who has carried on the momentum gathered during last few years.

Akshay’s no closer to the top than in 2007. His last record opener was 2008!

This is self indulgance and we are giving it to much attention and it will give Naveen an ego like SRK. It will eventually end. Kesari won’t open 40Cr+, if it opens 30Cr+ I can listen or read this nonsense!

His No 1 is not absolute and only because of his Box office. It is just relative. Actually Akshay’s No 1 ranking is largely because of inconsistency of stars who were giving biggest grossers and lesser volume. It is not absolute but relative. hence his rank is unstable and possible temporary.

To get a stable No 1 and unanimous acceptance he has to get absolute and only on his box office. Some like what Aamir and Salman gave and they had solid consistent grossers which defied any competition come what may. Their ranking was in absolute terms.

Next Aamir release is prob in 3-4y away, so obviously he is not nr 1 or wont be nr 1 for long.
SRK the less said, the better, this guys last good movie was CDI 2007.
Firstly let your stars do 3-4 movies/y over a period of 10y+, and then lets compare average grossers.
Bollywood makes 95% crap movies, so of course if an actor makes more movies, there is a higher chance of failure, thats common logic. Akshay has a different way, and hes happy
To get the biggest grossers, it has to be an event movie, just like in Hollywood, look at Avengers etc.
A movie about toilet and pads arent gonna do 300+, Gold opened to 25, although it was a bad movie, it still didnt make losses.
2.0 was an event movie, but people suddenly forget it was a long delayed movie and even the trailer wasnt anything special. It opened on a normal weekend and was a dubbed movie which is off-putting for many. It still did well enough.
I dont like all Akshay movies, but he is the only one of the big 5 who constantly tries different genres and takes risks. He really has come a long way from his struggling days and that should be appreciated.

We are talking box office stars here not ROI or Hit count or frequency or whatever. We all know TOH is a disaster, this disaster outgrossed every Akshay film ever except his highest grosser 2.0 which itself is the most expensive film ever from India.

This is not saying Akshay’s nothing. READ what the discussion is about. Khurana has 2 films of diversity this year, bigger successes ROI wise than Akshay period. Is he bigger than Akshay?

        • If Akshay had a couple of 25Cr openers and 200Cr+ grossers obviously he is considered due to high volume. But he doesn’t. The fact remains his best total is a total many have reached. He can do 10 films a year – that’s HIS choice and that dilution won’t change the dynamics of biggest star. 10 small hits vs 2 monster hits – is a profitability debate or debate on quality or success rates. Being biggest star is very easy debate. It’s what Shivaay wrote.

The rest Dhoom, PK and Dangal, didnt I say that you need event movies to get the big grossers? Out of these, I will give full credit to Aamir only for Dangal. If Hirani can give Ranbir a 350cr+ movie after the latter giving disaster after disaster, then the question is, how much did Aamir really add to PK?

Ghajini, 3 Idiots, Dhobi Ghat, Talaash, D3, PK, Dangal, SS have amassed 1500 Cr (no inflation taken into account)…thats an average of nearly 190Cr – HIGHER THAN AKSHAY’S HIGHEST GROSSER, so mathematically laws of physics need to be redefined for Akshay to score a higher average. Even here I am doing a disservice by including DG and SS as 2 feature length films of Aamir.

Worldwide gross will ballpark 5,000Cr – an average of 600Cr+. This is a NONSENSE debate.

Get your facts right. Hirani did 335 with Ranbir because Aamir’s presence elevated Hirani from a LRM Super Hit level to a 3I all time level & then stedied the ship through PK. Precisely why Aamir can deliver a record grosser like Dangal even with a niche film with no masala elements & songs.

That too Aamir has all-time grossers like RH, Ghajini, 3 Idiots, D3, PK and Dangal. Akshay’s got 0.
The list of opening records, Aamir has close to 10, Akshay has 1.
          Aamir has 6 HGOTY to Akshay’s 0.
Aamir has 5 HGOAT to 0 for Akshay. Aamir has 4 flops to Akshay’s 8.
          What NONSENSE is this?
The only thing you have is frequency. And if you want ratings/quality go to IMDB to get annihilation.

Disingenuous debate as I have to exclude some 23 years of inflation to favour Akshay. And I exclude one film, Akshay’s last 2.0 and Aamir is ahead! Sounds like you wanted 25 films just for this!

Forget overseas as that will just be rubbing it in.

I would surprised if Akshay’s films in total in overseas (100+) earn more than Aamir’s in overseas at total (30+) including or excluding China.

In fact China alone will probably outgross all of Akshay’s earnings overseas.

        • I think Akshay Kumar, on pure BO record of last couple of years is probably ahead of SRK right now.

SRK may need to completely re-invent himself. The age-old formula is not working for him anymore.

But things may change quickly. Next few years are going to be interesting especially taking into account the way this year panned out.

Aamir and Salman are still way ahead of everyone IMO. In Aamir’s case it’s not one flop with TOH that will hurt him. It’s lack of releases after TOH. If his next film releases in 3 or 4 years, then there is a vacuum out there. In Salman’s case, his position may be affected by a couple of under-performers right after Race 3.

The young guns might jump in if they build on this year instead of doing a Hrithik.

        • Age has caught up already with all 4 of these 50+ dudes. Expecting them to do a Rajnikanth is a bit much, due to various reasons, but chiefly that Bwood audience is far too diverse and deep to be kept captive a la Tamil cinema. IMHO, there are hardly 2-3 yrs left in the tanks of these guys to actually play central characters.
Think of this as a race which all 4, alongwith another 5-6 contemporaries, started 25-30 yrs ago, when each of them was a greenhorn in their low 20s. Out of that batch of the post Bachchan 90s, only these 4 have proven to be a ‘lambi race ka ghoda’. Most all of their contemporaries fell by the wayside, with barring only a Devgan just walking briskly far far behind them. At various stages of this race, a different guy has seemed to be ahead and sprinting. But as the years have progressed, the stark differences in approach/strategy/placement etc have started becoming more distinct.
Back in the NG days, I had once stated that after 3I, AK had pulled even with SRK, and that the days of the lone superstar that rules Bwood are done and dusted. Sallu had not even started his second run yet. So I had not imagined then, that 10 yrs on, we will be looking at not just 2 but actually 4 guys that finish this long race out.
As the finish line nears, IMHO, the relevant debate will be about AK vs SK and their relative positioning in a photo-finish. Whether it be Sallu’s traditional starpower rule vs Aamir’s rule-bending paradigm-shifts. Whether it is desi footfalls vs global game-changing. We could keep debating.
However, the one singular surprise has been Akshay, who for a long while seemed to be destined to fall by the wayside. But who, IMHO, has over the last few years steadied his stride, rejuvenated and surpassed SRK now.
What portends in the next max 2-4 years is anyone’s guess. But, perhaps the more important point is that these 4 guys have actually positioned to FINISH this race. Being the only 4 ghodas that survived this long multi decade marathon, perhaps in their own minds, they already have crossed the finish line, and are reaping the just benefits and deserved rewards, while all the Fans fight it out everywhere.

The burden and expectations on these 3 are tremedous unlike on an Akshay or Devgn. Their ranking at the top is justified due to this. Among the others only Ranbir carries this burden to some extent. Akshay can be called semi superstar along with Ranveer, Ranbir and Ajay Devgn. They will come next.

I am placing Srk along with Salman and Aamir just for the above reason. Srk might have given flops and underwhelming films but his star power is not defunct or dented much. Raees and DJ are proof.

    Mega star Bachchan
Superstars The 3 Khans Most dangerous Zone to be in.

Semi superstars Akshay, Ajay Devgn, Ranbir, Ranveer, Varun in that order. Dangerous Zone to be in.

Tiger, JA, Khurana are at the most stars. No one cares if their films fail.

The report suggests, “Farhan (Akhtar) and his team were working on the script of Don 3 for the last one and a half years. They have finally locked the script and believe me; it’s going to be the best of the franchise. Don 3 will have a completely different storyline, unlike Don 2 which was the continuation of the first part.”

Actors like Salman and Akshay were way behind him 10 years back. When the going got tough, they re-invented themselves. Salman went from comedies and love stories to action films. Akshay went from action films in the 90s to comedies and then to content based social films recently. Even Devgan managed to re-invent himself to survive.

The last Don had a plot even more silly that Race 3’s.

I would go for a complete debutant who is not interested or a fan of SRK or his history. If you see Big B he has gone with new, fresh ideas a lot in this innings. Ultimately you need a director who can say no! And one who doesn’t mind staying in shabby surroundings and not these expensive lavish ones that Master speaks off.

Do people go to watch a movie based on its budget? If yes, then no actors who do low budget films should be in the list. Also then the ratings should be based on gross collections irrespective of budget.
Is it based on the movie making profits? Then it should be based on ROI as the hit/ super hit classification seems to be dubious
Is it the opening day figures? Does genre play a factor?
And then there is overseas collections which for a long time was used to prop up SRK’s stardom. Now convieniently it becomes irrelevant

If Aamir had had a release in 2019, it would have been interesting to see how it would have opened.

When Aamir Khan called up Vidhu Vinod Chopra and said ‘Tu meri party mein meri baja raha hai’Entertainment
    Updated Dec 24, 2018 | 20:26 IST | Pooja Nayak

Vidhu Vinod Chopra just made a brutally honest confession about the reason behind Aamir Khan and the ‘so-called’ superstars’ box office debacle in 2018

Let’s just say 2018 has been really disappointing for the Khans and with that we are talking about all the three superstars, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan. The trio, who until last year were considered as the box office kings, unfortunately couldn’t win over the audience this year. Zero, Race 3, Thugs Of Hindostan all three underperformed while small budget films like Raazi, Stree, Badhai Ho emerged as surprise hits with some amazing performances by Rajkummar Rao, Ayushmann Khurranna, Vicky Kaushal. So does this mean the Khans have lost their magic?

Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who is coming up with a film called Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga starring Anil Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Juhi Chawla, decided to share his point of view on this during a recent media interaction as he said, “The first thing is that the script should be written devoid of big stars. The trouble is that when you start thinking that okay, this is the story I am going to do for this guy, that is when you start making compromises. Which is why I think the disaster is hitting you all in the faces right now because it’s not a script, it becomes a vehicle for a star and when it becomes a vehicle for a star, it ceases to be a script. So write a story and then look at the actor. I didn’t write Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga for Anil Kapoor. I wrote the film and I then said, Anil is the best choice for this role and then I called him. I think all the so-called stars must realise that the script comes first and then comes anything.”

Stating how he had also warned Aamir Khan about the same during Dangal, he added, “I said it at Dangal success party…Someone asked me there sir Aamir No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and I was like what 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. It’s because of the script that the film has done well. Even if Hrithik was there in this film, it would have worked well but if made horribly then it wouldn’t work at all. Aamir called me later and he was like yaar ‘tu meri party mein meri baja raha hai’ Now see what happened? Ask him (Aamir) only what happened. So what I said that day was true right?”

Do you agree with Vidhu Vinod Chopra?

The $40 million drama about a man’s attempts to overcome his PTSD is one of the biggest bombs of the year, debuting to a disastrous $2.4 million from 1,191 theaters. It stands to lose between $45 million to $50 million when marketing and distribution costs are taken into account, according to rival studio executives, an embarrassing result for both Carell and Zemeckis.

    • The long Christmas weekend is underway with Aquaman, Warner Bros.’s latest entry into their DC Extended Universe, topping the charts, on its way to a $100+ million five-day opening. Meanwhile, Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns and Paramount’s Bumblebee finished in runner-up positions over a weekend that played relatively similarly to the same weekend last year, though given the holiday timing its hard to make an apples-to-apples comparison.

Performing almost exactly as expected, WB’s release of Aquaman easily took the #1 spot at the weekend box office with an estimated $67.4 million over the course of the three-day weekend and a cume that now stands at $72.1 million once you include the $4.7 million in grosses from pre-weekend Amazon Prime showings. The film is now expected to deliver around $105 million over the course of its first five days, which ends on Christmas Day, routinely the busiest day at the box office all year. The film received an “A-” CinemaScore from opening day audiences and played to an opening weekend crowd that was 55% male and 58% aged 25 years or older.

Overall, the performance ranks as one of the top ten December openings of all-time, though it is sixth largest debut within WB’s DC Extended Universe. That last note, however, will be an interesting stat to watch as Aquaman has enjoyed some of the best reviews of the franchise and audiences seem to be enjoying it to the tune of an 86% audience rating on RottenTomatoes.

Zero is looking at a reasonable Monday with collections in the 9-10 crore nett range on Monday. It will be a 45-50% drop which is a little high for a film which under performed over the weekend but then it could have been much worse for a film which did not really trend over the weekend. There was also the factor of the holiday on Tuesday helping the film in the evening.

Surprisingly its still UP and Bihar holding best. Some centers in these parts only dropped 30% from the first day and you probably have to go back to Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam in 2002 when a Shahrukh Khan film out performed in these parts compared to the metros. Even the single screens are holding well across UP and Bihar. The collections are also held better in Delhi NCR and big cities of East Punjab.

The total collections of the film so far are in the 64 crore nett range and there should be jump on Wednesday due to the holiday but as film has not been really been accepted it will not be that big 60-70% jump which can happen for a film which is not doing huge collections.

“Whacky has different meanings to different people. But for viewings, the writing has to be”

Agree. But one thing is certain. What is wacky or whacky is not generic. But generic becomes Meta when the reviewer wants to do so. As is happening with Zero with some viewers and reviewers. Some are finding it Meta and some are finding it too generic. Srk in a lovestory is the most generic thing one can think of. But some are finding it Meta allover.
Meta is in the minds of the viewer just like beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

    Like

    • Exactly.

Actually for whacky stuff we will never know for certain what meta the writer intended. We will individually interpret it as ‘di-verse’ based on our own preferences, bias and self interest. But our ancient texts insists on ‘multi-verse’ existence, but hey whats the scientific proof?

      • Take the example of a tree. For ordinary souls it is just a tree. But for some it is not the tree but it is the roots that are interesting. For that you have to study botany. A tree is too generic and it is the roots that make the tree interesting. A tree maybe short or tall but it does not matter. Without roots the tree will not be there. Without the womb there wont be living being.
Take a tic tic clock. It has meanings. For many, it just reminds them what to do at what time. But to those who are on death bed or about to be hanged and know about their impending fate, the clock looks like Yamraj impatiently waiting to get them. And for students writing an exam, the clock ticking away is like making their hand race with their minds. For philosophers, it denotes so many things. Clock is time. The B-theory of time is the name given to one of two positions regarding philosophy of time. B theorists argue that the flow of time is an illusion. The past, present and future are equally real, and that time is tenseless. This would mean that temporal becoming is not an objective feature of reality.
Clock can break down but time will not.

        • That is an apt philosophical meta for an often used tree data structure in software.

Let me give another one. Every moment we live, r-values are continuously created on-the-fly and getting lost in the time-space warp. A coder has created a reference variable to capture one such r-value. But he cant assign r-values to normal reference variables. So he creates a constant reference that can ‘refer’ to the r-value. BUT to the reader, there is no constant reference due to ‘di-versity’ principle. So, he/she needs to create a non-constant reference variable that serves as an alias to the constant reference that the writer had created. What it implies, is that the reader is not capturing the r-value anymore, but the writer’s l-value.

All this can get v confusing and create controversies. But thats why its whacky in the first place!

        • Very interesting. So even software coding is Meta. I will try to go deep into this.

This article contains a brief overview of some of the main topics in the philosophy of time — Fatalism; Reductionism and Platonism with respect to time; the topology of time; McTaggart’s arguments; The A Theory and The B Theory; Presentism, Eternalism, and The Growing Universe Theory; time travel; and the 3D/4D controversy — together with some suggestions for further reading on each topic, and a bibliography.

Note: This entry does not discuss the consciousness, perception, experience, or phenomenology of time. An historical overview and general presentation of the various views is available in the entry on temporal consciousness. Further coverage can be found in the SEP entry on the experience and perception of time. For those interested specifically in phenomenological views, see the entries on Husserl (Section 6), and Heidegger (Section 2: Being and Time).

          https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/time/

Consider the question of whether time should be represented by a line without a beginning. Aristotle has argued (roughly) that time cannot have a beginning on the grounds that in order for time to have a beginning, there must be a first moment of time, but that in order to count as a moment of time, that allegedly first moment would have to come between an earlier period of time and a later period of time, which is inconsistent with its being the first moment of time. (Aristotle argues in the same way that time cannot have an end.)

This part of discussion comes under Topology of Time.
          Very interesting.

Akshay overperformed the 3 Khans in a year for the first time and young brigade led by Ranbir and Ranveer took the mantle from aging Khans. From now on we may see Khans as one of the many stars competing with one another, the same way Amitabh used to in late 90s. If you are a submissive person, even then you will talk about it. But, now, I do not feel the need to explain because I feel no matter what you do, people will talk about you. “Logo ka kaam hai bolna woh bolenge.” No point getting affected by it. The fun element will be lost if we discuss only niche films.

As for myself, I am more interested in the fate of Toh in China even if it underperforms there. And then I will be interested in KGF, Manikarnika, Simmba etc.

Scaling wide has its own set of issues, which later helps to make the tech sharper and useful. Feedback loop is essential. So initial ratings dont matter, but number of viewings do. Its like a publicity gimmick itself, but an essential experiment.

You know whats the take-away from Lucider’s pilot episode? Mindspace-Invasion can create films like Bird-Box. Such pseudo-apocalyptic imagination (without any explanation or understanding of the phenomena whatsoever) can hamper ur beta run immensely; making it a failure.

    Box Office India Trade Network

KGF held up very strongly on monday as it collected 13.75 crore nett on day four across India compared to the 16.50 crore nett on day one. The drop is under 20% and the drop is only in Karnataka where the film had a huge opening.

The hindi version has jumped around 45% from the first day which is a very strong trend especially for this type of film. It is trending like a HIT Hindi content film when it is actually a South action film that too from Kannada film industry which actually have no hope in the Hindi markets. Its not done well across all hindi markets but whatever it has done still ranges from good to decent because in some parts its near impossible to get the audience in for this type of film.

The dubbed films which have done well before did not look like South films which is a huge plus but this film did and has still managed collections. The crucial day for the film will be Friday and if that holds like content films do then this film will do very well. The approx four day figures of KGF are as follows.

    Karnataka – 47,50,00,000

    Hindi Markets – 12,00,00,000

    Nizam / Andhra – 3,75,00,000

  90. Ten years of Ghajini: The film that made an average Indian a number-crunching trade pundit

Remake of a Tamil psychological thriller (itself inspired by Memento), A.R. Murugadoss-directed Ghajini is the inventor of the elusive Rs 100 crore club. It made leading man Aamir Khan a box-office magnet. But does the film hold up well today? A quick glance at its legacy.

Another comparison was if the film departed from Memento (2000), which has acquired a cult following over the years. Explaining Memento’s non-linear, timeline-bursting narrative, filmmaker Christopher Nolan had once said, “We tried to put the audience through the head of the protagonist to experience his uncertainty, confusion and paranoia. He’s an unreliable narrator, so we are seeing the world through the distorted point of view of this one particular person.” Nolan has famously described Memento as “film noir.” On the other hand, Ghajini is a love story gone wrong. It has been whittled down for the Indian taste. Murugadoss spent a lot of time building the romance between Aamir and Asin and the action set pieces instead of focusing on the philosophical and psychological elements that has made Memento a classic of the genre. In other words, Memento (adapted from a short story by Nolan’s brother) was faithful to its concept, Ghajini to Aamir Khan.

    • Aamir buzzed his hair for the second remake of Nolan’s film as a pub gimmick.

But here is some ‘meta’-notes on the dev of original … from ‘wiki’ (*so it may be an edited article with some convenient modifications from reality*)

      *****

In July 1996, Christopher and Jonathan took a cross-country road trip from Chicago to Los Angeles, as Christopher was relocating his home to the West Coast. During the drive, Jonathan pitched the story for the film, who responded enthusiastically to the idea. After they arrived in Los Angeles, Jonathan left for Washington, D.C., to finish college at Georgetown University. Christopher repeatedly asked Jonathan to send him a first draft, and after a few months, Jonathan complied. Two months later, Christopher came up with the idea to tell the film backwards, and began to work on the screenplay. Jonathan wrote the short story simultaneously, and they continued to correspond, sending each other subsequent revisions of their respective works. Christopher initially wrote the script as a linear story, and then would “go back and reorder it the way it is on screen to check the logic of it.”

Jonathan’s short story, titled Memento “Mori”, is radically different from Christopher’s film, although it maintains the same essential elements. In Jonathan’s version, Leonard is instead named Earl and is a patient at a mental institution. As in the film, his wife was killed by an anonymous man, and during the attack on his wife, Earl lost his ability to create new long-term memories. Like Leonard, Earl leaves notes to himself and has tattoos with information about the killer. However, in the short story, Earl convinces himself through his own written notes to escape the mental institution and murder his wife’s killer. Unlike the film, there is no ambiguity that Earl finds and kills the anonymous man.

In July 1997, Nolan’s (who?) girlfriend Emma Thomas showed his screenplay to Aaron Ryder, an executive for Newmarket Films. Ryder said the script was, “perhaps the most innovative script I had ever seen”, and soon after, it was optioned by Newmarket and given a budget of $4.5 million. Pre-production lasted seven weeks, during which the main shooting location changed from Montreal, Quebec to Los Angeles, California, to create a more realistic and noirish atmosphere for the film.

Also, for those who consider Secret Superstar as an Aamir Khan film, the movie on its 5th day being Monday (also released on Thursday) made 3.05 crores, and yes, that’s a number that Zero fortunately has surpassed.

The film only dropped 30% in Delhi / UP as it collected 3 crore nett against the 4.20 crore nett on day one. East Punjab and Bihar dropped 40%. But its a different story in Mumbai and South as collections came down 55% and even 60% in some centres. There is the Xmas holiday on Tuesday but it might not grow as it should on a the national holiday as the holiday is more effective in the Mumbai and South while its not so big in UP and Bihar.

Kedarnath had the strongest trend on Monday of all films running as its collections showed growth of 65-70% from its Friday numbers. The film has found appreciation and if the collections dont match the appreciattion its mainly down to a lackluster opening and then an abrupt end to its run due to new Xmas releases. The film dropped only 53% in its second week and it was a universal trend except Nizam / Andhra and even in third week the collections will come despite limited screens.

The film will cross the 65 crore nett mark today and there has been this fiasco with the reviews of Zero but this film shows even a film which is more towards content can still run with negativity from these so called reviewers. The public always has a better judgement and always will as its consolidated.

The collections of Kedarnath are as follows.

Kam se kam speech ko clear rehane dete. There are thousand of wheel chair bound people who speak clearly. Finally WTF with this scientist angle ? This mars and all science talk killed the film. Why oh why they took this part in story ? Agar film simple rakhi hoti to kya pata chal jati. Though I didn’t liked any part but my wife and daughter enjoyed before interval part but second part really killed the film as I already said that science part was as boring as Modi’s spee nowadays.

Zero will do business in the 12-12.50 crore nett range as per early estimates which is around 30% better than Monday. The growth is less than normal for a national holiday but it is sort of expected as the film did not trend strongly over the weekend and the Monday number was pretty decent considering the weekend so some of the growth was baked into the Monday collection.

Also the best markets are UP and Bihar and Christmas is probably the weakest national holdiay in these parts and they have grown less than places like Bengal and South despite the film being liked best in UP and Bihar. The growth this Christmas day is generally less this year as films like Kedarnath and KGF which are doing much lower numbers and have potential for huge growth are also not showing that huge growth for a national holiday.

The collections of Zero till date are 76-77 crore nett and the big drop will come on Wednesday which will tell where week will end. The five day business is what it should have done over the weekend from that 19 crore nett start.

Kangana Ranaut REVEALS WHY she chose to DIRECT portions of Manikarnika…
    Monday, December 24, 2018 | 1:29:17 PM IST (+05:30 GMT)
    By Bollywood Team

    kangana ranaut

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, is one movie that has been in news ever since it was announced. The period film stars Kangana Ranaut in the titular role and it is co-directed by Krish and Kangana, has substantial buzz surrounding its release, thanks to its mammoth scale and a mass-appealing subject.

The trailer of the movie has caught the attention of one and all people cannot stop raving about it.

Another thing that has been the talk of the town is that Kangana Ranaut has donned on the hat of co-director with this movie.

Kangana is one of the few actresses that we have in Bollywood that have carried the weight of the entire movie on her shoulders and emerged victoriously.

Her performance in movies such as Fashion, Queen and Tanu Weds Manu franchise has won her many accolades.

Talking about her experience as a director, Kangana says, “I always wanted to direct films. These days, you generally hear of directors wanting to be actors, and not the other way around. Even those actors who direct don’t really do it full-time.

They feel that they have got a certain amount of acclaim and popularity as actors, so why should they give that up and only direct films. It may sound strange, but I have never really identified with being an actress. It’s not my calling, direction is.”

She went on to elaborate on how comfortable she felt being a director, “It’s actually surprising even to me how comfortable I feel being a director on set, even when I am sweating buckets and am surrounded by 500 people and everyone’s screaming at the same time!

There’s something about directing a film that’s so gratifying, even though it’s a worker’s life. An actor is just one part of the whole orchestra of filmmaking and it kind of makes me feel inadequate, that I am not doing enough as a creative person”.

“It’s not that I don’t want to act in films with other directors I am doing Ashwiny’s (Iyer Tiwari) Panga and Prakash’s film (Kovelamudi, called Mental Hai Kya) right now. I like acting, but I always felt a part of me was dying somewhere because I wasn’t being utilized totally.

I felt like a part of me was rotting away because I wasn’t being able to express myself as a director. When I was just an actor on this film, I didn’t know what was happening with the rest of the film and it was frustrating.

A lot of mishaps happened on set I injured myself several times, I broke my forehead and I was worried about how I would take this forward as an actor. But when I got down to directing, there was no pressure there were only goals. For me, the director is the hero of a film and directing is my first love,” she added.

Kangana also mentioned that being just an actor in a movie is a relief as it is a small part of a huge canvas. She says, “Honestly, it’s actually a relief to just be an actor to be a small part of a huge canvas. Acting, for me, is actually like a holiday (laughs). I can sit prettily in my van and go out only when I am called for my shot, I don’t have to bother about anything else. When I was shooting Panga, I was so busy with the VFX of Manikarnika that I was constantly Facetiming with my team. Imagine how overrated actors are! I could actually do a full-fledged role as an actor and I had so much time that I did the entire VFX work of an epic film alongside!”

She added, “And yet, actors behave like they are carrying the burden of the world on their shoulders so, so overrated. Acting involves doing absolutely nothing and that kind of superficial involvement always hurt me.

I don’t come from a film family and I don’t have a platform set out for me where I can stand and make tall announcements like, ‘I want to be a director’. It’s happened organically. I still ask Prasoon Sir that what made him think I could direct when even I didn’t know I could do it.

Being an actor doesn’t interfere with what I want to do as a director and vice-versa. As an actor, I am happy to be a part of someone else’s vision. If you ask me whether the films I am doing as an actor stimulate me as a director, then the answer would be, ‘Not at all’.

What Ashwiny is doing with Panga is a reflection of who she is as a mother and a wife. I don’t know that world because I am not married and I don’t have children-related issues (smiles). Mental Hai Kya is a thriller, it’s a mad ride and as a director, thriller as a genre doesn’t excite me. But to be part of it as an actor is so gratifying”.

Being a part of a Rohit Shetty film is as much a high for me as being a central character in Kedarnath. When I signed Simmba, I was very aware of my role. One needs to know why one is doing what one is doing. I did Simmba with my eyes open. I am thrilled to be part of it. I aspire to do all genres of cinema.”

Displaying wisdom far beyond her years, Sara says, “An actor does every film in the hope of success and in the hope of learning something new. I’ve learnt a lot from working in both Kedarnath and Simmba.”

What would your third film be? “Something that challenges and excites me. Right now, I am promoting Kedarnath and Simmba. I am scared when this ends there will be a void in my life. I can’t wait to get into another project.”

“Just like Balasaheb was controversial, but his thoughts gave direction to the country, the movie on Balasaheb too will be like that. We will show what he was like. This is not a love story. There will be no cuts or changes,” he told News18.

Thackeray, who was known for his highly provocative and controversial statements, had targeted South Indians in the late 1960s, accusing them of snatching away jobs from the Maharashtra youth. Prasoon Joshi-led CBFC has objected to its reference in the film.

  125. I will be updating this for all the major stars one at a time, adding for SRK now

Prediction for Aamir Khan in 2019: Bad decision of slowing down leading to sheer waste of massive talent

If Aamir Khan has no release in 2019, he is likely to get knocked out of top 3 by year end. Only way he can survive now is when others fail to deliver. Then status quo remains.
I hope he does a quickie. Wonder why he did not sign any movie this year. What the hell???? And his fans here come after me if his ranks are lowered as if I am responsible for his no show.

Prediction for Salman Khan in 2019: Bharat has to be a HIT

If Bharat is a HIT, then Salman Khan will still remain among the top stars performers. If superhit, he will again be No 1. An Eid release is usually a guaranteed hit for him but Race 3, which released on Eid, sent shock waves. There are no other projects at the moments which is on floors

Prediction for SRK in 2019: Lack of movies makes no sense

SRK may be going thru a bad phase but he has seen worse and he should know that the only way to outperform is to first perform. Where are his movies? Pre-producting for his next, Salute has not even started. For god sake and for his fans..what is going on????

The last schedule of Bharat will begin in January which will be dedicated to the climax scenes. As per reports, three different sets have been set up at Josh Maidan 1 and 2 and open ground at Film City. The expensive sets have been recreated by Acropolis’ Rajnish Hedao over the course of three months. Besides the intense action packed climax scenes, a crucial dramatic sequence between Katrina and Salman will also be filmed during the course of last schedule. As the script demanded Old Delhi, so makers decided to recreate it.

  128. So all 3 Khans flopped this year. When was the last time that happened??

Anyways, I think Aamir is heading towards boredom (or may be his interest has shifted somewhere else). These days he isn’t looking interested in anything related to working in movies, SRK’s force has been exhausted since a long time and with every release he keeps confirming, Salman enjoyed a phase where he can stand in front of camera and be himself and that would do great, but don’t think that’s gonna work now. So may be what looked unlikely in near future couple of years ago has happened. The Khan rule is heading towards end. We are back to early 90s. The throne is finally slipping with lot of old and new contenders. Bollywood now awaits a brand new success story or in case of Khans it’s stories.

    • At least Aamir is doing one good thing, other than films. He is seriously involved in the re-greening of rural Maharashtra. I have been following his Paani Foundation efforts through the past three- four years. Last year, the rains were insufficient in Maharashtra, and yet villages that received some rain benefited, if rainwater work had been done. I understand that the foundation is also looking at enriching soil quality. It is a limited five year program, so I guess they want to do maximum work possible.

I am a benficiary of Chennai’s rain water harvesting efforts, some 15 years back, courtesy then CM Jayalalitha. From around 2004-5, Chennai’s water woes ended for many citizens. Will ever be grateful to Jayalalitha for having made rainwater harvesting mandatory — if you did not do it, you sewer line connection would be shut. Nothing works like a threat.

It could be down to 4 on Thursday ending its first week 84 at the lower end & 90 at the upper end, which means it would just touch 100 Crores or thereabouts ending just 5 to 7 Crores ahead of Talaash back in 2012 with thrice the budget!! 3rd disaster for Shahrukh in his last 5 movies and here overseas is also a damp-squib which is unusual as this is his ‘genre’ which has been working for so long in the overseas!! Still excuses galore from Shahrukh fan(atics) for it & trying to club Salman and Aamir together in this phase as if they were giving the same leniency to them when he was at the top!! One question to all 3 of them is why can’t they work on some small budget movies in between big ones as that would take a lot of pressure off them in terms of recovery and also could provide them with an array of creative choices to choose from. Going small is one of the ways to elongate their career as their recent failures have been more on the budget front than the reception their movies have been given at the box-office.

    • As an Aamir fan, I seriously want Aamir to do a small quick film. Or even another Talaash meaning a medium sized quickie. In China through past week, Aamir has been telling interviewers that he would be interested in a Chinese film, if the right script came his way. But he adds that would require three to six months to get the Chinese dialogues correct. Which rules out a 2019 release. 😐

Somebody, anybody, make this message reach Aamir — we want a good small Hindi film from you before 2019 ends. And Mahabharat can wait. Do your wife’s film, anything else….but get productive fast. We are all growing older.

It is a well known fact that he was going through a rough phase in his married life which finally ended in a divorce in 2002, so he didn’t sign any movie even after he had finished shooting for Lagaan & DCH in 2001 & the whole Oscar thing happened in 2002 which didn’t take more than 2 to 3 months of his time during which he might have discussed and interacted with the film studios, the producers & the directors about the prospects and possibilities if any, but that was never the prime reason behind the hiatus he took between 2001 & 2005.

Yet its likely to eat up screens and hurt TOH’s prospects (if any) in China. But he has also increased TOH’s predicted opening numbers. Moreover, he is saying the future of indian films in China depends on how TOH performs there. So it all implies average outcome for indian films in future in chinese market along with a possible outcome of local production to make an opening splash despite being a niche film?

China is always so interesting. What does it all mean? I think for indian films in china, releasing a film itself is a problem for lot of factors.

      Like

      • Yet was it really a film about ‘atheism’ or a rant against all religions?

The climax revealed his true intentions – PK was upset that his key to go back home was being held up as a religious talisman by one Guru (who turned out to not believe in what he was preaching). THAT was the main conflict of the film. He just wanted to go back. Was he against any religion, religious leaders or those who follow religion ??

He insisted religion is necessary to live life. He was also not crucifying all religious leaders under one broad stroke. He had issue with one guy who withheld his key.

Interstellar was about us visiting different new worlds. Hirani’s film was about one world, while Nolan wanted to explore an unknown uni-verse. Not many consider Interstellar as his best, while i personally adored the father-daughter bondage that emotionally held the movie together IMO.

If it is publicized, they will feel humiliated. Some time back I read a story about a senior employee who was arrested for taking huge bribes. After CBI questioned his family, the mother and daughter committed suicide due to shame or harassment. And also the son. Then the accused who was home after bail also committed suicide. Entire family wiped out due to one man’s crime or mistake.
When parents scold children for lowgrades or deny them a smart phone or bike, children commit suicide. Students commit suicide when they are caught for copying or if the teacher is strict with them.
So these suicides should be taken as a bigger picture. Why they are happening and who is actually responsible for them?
The media is mainly responsible for highlighting them for sensationalising.
Naming and shaming is not such a good idea. It can backfire.

Aamir Khan’s ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ set for release in China

Celebrated Indian actor Aamir Khan’s new film “Thugs of Hindostan” is set to be released in China on December 28.

Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya and produced by Yash Raj Films, the production of the adventure film “Thugs of Hindostan” has cost about 300 million yuan ($43.5 million). Till late November, in return, it grossed about $40 million in box office.

Before its release in China, starting from December 16, the leading actor Aamir have finished a 10-day tour to attend a series of promotional events in eight major cities in China, including Sanya, Guangzhou, Xi’an, Nanjing, Chengdu, Wuhan, Shanghai, and Beijing.

The review of the film, however, seems to come out critically. Its Average Rating on the Rotten Tomatoes is only a little over 4 out of 10, and many critics offered negative comments.

What raised the expectations of Chinese fans is that the film to be released two days later is a unique version edited by Aamir Khan himself. Catering to the Chinese audience’s taste, this version removes some slow-motion action scenes and local Indian slangs, while adding some background stories. This version will be more compact, intense, and easier to understand.

The film also keeps many songs and dance numbers to match the festive ambiance.

Khan enjoys great popularity in China. His previous works feature the comedy-drama being a satire about the Indian education system, 3 idiots (2009), the biopic film to reflect the potential and growth of girls from India’s lower class, Dangal (2016), and the musical drama telling how an ordinary girl realizes the dream of being a singer, Secret Superstar (2017). All of them were global hits and bear high fame among Chinese audience.

The year 2018 marks the 30th anniversary for Khan since he worked as a full-time actor. In “Thugs of Hindostan” he stars as a rogue, Firangi, which some comments said may be the most groundbreaking character in his career. The role he plays mediates between the English colonists and a group of Indian bandits. Being neither honest nor evil, his character presents a varied and mysterious image to the audience.

The Hindi version of KGF has held very well post the Christmas holiday with collections of 2.50 crore nett. the collections are still higher than the first day by 25%. The trend of this film is very similar to the first Bahubali film at half the level of business with a similar release in terms of screen count. The total so far is 18.75 crore nett and thw week should end at 21 crore nett.

Bahubali – The Beggining broke in the second week across India and that was despite the release of a huge blockbuster like Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The screen count of Bahubali – The Beginning was still okay in Mumbai but was hit badly in many other circuits due to Bajrangi Bhaijaan but it still collected very well.

Obviously KGF (Hindi) is no Bahubali – The Beginning (Hindi) as collections are 50% of that film but if it can continue with the trend of Bahubali – The Beginning over the next ten days or so then it will come out with a very good final total. The approx six day figures of KGF (Hindi) are as follows.

    Friday – 2,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 3,00,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 4,00,00,000 apprx

    Wednesday 2,50,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 18,75,00,000 apprx

Nothing more to say besides what most have already said. I thought the movie was very good to brilliant in some parts until last 30 minutes. Instead of NASA, would have been better if the method to get the love back was in another form (join army, or social works or something else). It would be more believable. Mere Naam Tu songs was amazing on screen. So, three things:

    1) I don’t think SRK will be in this biopic of astronaut, zero showed enough of it already.
    2) No I have to see TOH because I’m sure, TOH is not as bad as portrayed in social media.
    3) Khans in particular will have a very hard time going forward because there is a section who wants them out. Any subpar movies of theirs will not do. I think even a decent movie will get killed via social media.

When I watched Andhadhun I figured even the cheating policeman could be played by a star actor. Unfortunately such a role just wouldn’t be gobbled up as Ayushman’s is the lead role.

I’d much rather see these 50+ year olds playing that age or older.

      • The alarm bells and warning signs were present in abundance. So many decently trended stars have fallen by the wayside in the last 2-4 yrs. Saif, HR, AjayD, Siddharth, ArjunK, Emraan, etc. These guys at least delivered one avg grosser a year to keep pushing their carts forward. But they have ground to a halt. The reasons as explained previously were to do with choice of alternate and better entertainment for the paying public. If you make cinema going as expensive as other forms of entertainment, for sure the public will respond in kind. With the onslaught of online streaming, hollywood tentpoles, and even Southern movies, the ROI potential for bwood is rapidly decreasing.

As for the 3 Khans, these Zero, JHMS, Race3, etc etc kinda roles have been easy pickings for SRK/Sallu. Lazily written, with disproportionate reliance on starpower to pull through. Both of them will need to transition over very quickly.
Aamir had already transitioned with Dangal/PK, he just tried to experiment (albeit a very costly one) by going back to what he thought was the easy mainstream picking. He found out the hard way that people who pay don’t care a hoot for starpower anymore.
2018 should sound the final alarm for all, and even Akshay is not too far behind in age to take it casually anymore. However, he seems to have already become the most cautious of all, by doing low to medium budget flicks with good return potential.

I think Salman and SRK especially carry the bigger burden of image, stardom so it might be tougher to let go. Even Dutt found munnabhai late on. They don’t have to be side actors but surely they can do some interesting work still.

    • Z, points 1-3 perfectly confirm my perception. Thanks for your post.

      • Point #3 is just alarmist. There is no backlash from viewers against any of the Khans. Had it been so, ToH would not have broken opening day records.

Also, film critics don’t work under communal lines. The reviews for all 3 films have been terrible, across the board.

It’s just gravely insincere to attribute communal bias against the Khans when they were the top stars for so long, and two of them continue to be, in Bollywood.

The rise of Trump in the US doesn’t make Hollywood communal.

          Great comment Saket.

        • The film that suffered the most in terms of boycott calls and attacks was SLB’s PADMAAVAT.

And when it was released, it made 300 Crores!

Yes, and no one is always encouraged to finally leave the country!

        • With all due respect, you guys have no idea what you are talking about. The reality is just the opposite of what you claim.

In Bollywood, it’s the right wing supporters who are marginalised. Look at Anupam Kher — his career is finished. No major production house is hiring him.

Look at Vivek Agnihotri. Another done and dusted case.

When people go out and watch movies, they don’t look at someone’s religion. So please stop spreading hate to suit your own narrative.

        • vivek agnihotri and anupam kher? both are rightwing spokespersons and doing well! They are limiting themselves to that as they have political amibitions obviously..anupam kher was ftii chairman till recently and vivek agnihotri just coined a phrase for the ruling party with his book urban naxal.. another one is ashok pandit.what they are doing is their choice..

but there are others who r trying to keep as low profile in controversial matters and still are always on target..It is a reality.

        • Again, where are the facts in your post?

Isn’t it true that Kher’s career as an actor is finished? Agnihotri’s career as a director is also finished?

And why don’t you give a concrete example of hate? Why was DANGAL the biggest Hindi grosser of all time? After Aamir’s intolerance remark, to boot.

Why did PK, a film that ostensibly criticises the practices of a Hindu Godman, do so well?

Where is the proof that Khans are being persecuted? Why don’t you have any comments on what a guy like Owaisi has to say?

        • Just because SRK is giving flops, the religion card has to be brought out, to justify his flops? It’s really pathetic!

This is precisely what Azharuddin did when he was caught in the match fixing scandal. Pulled out the religion card, all the time ignoring the fact that his religion never came in the way of him becoming the Indian cricket team’s captain.

        • Saket, you are totally right. Indian audiences have supported the careers till date and they have every right to remove that support. To blame it on religion is simply untrue. You only have to see SRK’s career post OSO to know he has been in decline whilst Aamir and Salman went through the best phases in their career – so how can that be? That for 2 it has worked out and 1 not? It’s simply film choices that got them where they are and those choices will continue it or finish it.
