  1. Latha on Ek Ladki Toh Aisa Laga: “In Kapoor and Sons, it was a surprise until one watched the actual movie and also was not the main track of the movie.
I will be very surprised if a) This movie releases without any issue/court cases etc and b) does well

The Indian audiences are not that welcoming when it comes to such issues – they do not want to watch stuff which makes them uncomfortable.”

I think a 20 crore gross is definitely there for the taking. Judging by the trailer, it looks like a 30 crore cost or thereabouts kind of film. Breaking even may be an uphill task. However, I can imagine it being a cult success on netflix.

I don’t think VVC has been smart at all in basing the story in a deceptive 2007-style punjabi family musical story. You can’t fool conventional audiences into coming into the theatres against their will. But we’ll see if this approach works or not.

  2. Zero (3), KGF, and the rest of the box office…

Well, the underlying assumption of the skeptics here is that SRK gets singled-out since he asserts his religious identity more than others. He wants Pakistan in IPL, he acts in RAEES where, as per some, his, Muslimness — for lack of a better word– is on full-on display, what with the film also having an action scene in a butcher-shop [also, his introduction scene, with self-flagellation]. Plus, he gets an actress from Pakistan, Mahira, who has absolutely nothing to bring to the table.

And then of course, there is MNIK, where his attempt might have been to highlight the stigmatism that Muslims face: For an issue as serious as this, he then goes to choose Karan Johar as the director!!

SRK does have the requisite starpower to pull the audiences in, at least his core fans are always flocking. Its the non-fans that are tired of watching him rehash romance and cookie-cutter mannerisms in movie after movie.
As for Sallu, TB was crap, but TZH did great. And Race3 was simply atrocious.
Aamir gave the biggest opening day record with TOH. How can that be a sign of ‘religious-rejection’??

Owaisi represents the purest form of community representation. Undiluted, and unbending to the diktats of any others. Each community needs to have their own steadfast political representatives. At least they can bargain for their rights and well-being in the giant diversity of India.
Ya’ll might pillory me for viewpoint. But just see the alternatives, in the garb of being central upholders of democracy. In contrast to how the Owaisis function, what we see the two central parties doing, ie just playing lip service to votebanks, for whom they do nothing time after time.

        • Saket, I know of the Razakar history. But, every Indian political outfit has its hands dripping with blood, so whats new?
My point is simple: Benefits for communities accrue only when those communities have political representatives that are in alignment with the well-being of said community. From what I have read and understood, Owaisi does exactly that for his community, and is not into self-enrichment at the cost of his community, which should be the basic requirement.
In contrast, a Congress or BJP tries to become a rainbow coalition, but serves only one family (in the case of the former) and only one ideology (in the case of the latter), resulting in dilution of community well-being. So called leaders of diverse communities in these centrist parties do not always have a say or a chip at the bargaining table, cause umpteen times those chips get traded away for the benefit of the family/ideology.

Indian Democracy has had a 75 yr tryst with central parties that have only resulted in incremental progress. Coalitions barely lasted during the few times these parties were not in power, and this is the bogeyman constantly used to scare voters into voting for the central parties. Perhaps, they ought to change rules: An Election only every 5 years. And the parties will have to form coalitions that function, come what may. I believe that sorta system does exist in some European democracies.

    • LOL @ the Manmohan Desai comparison – TA is an idiot.

Coincidentally, I was watching Dharam Veer earlier today. WOW what a film. It is literally baahubali 2 and TOH combined together. The Baahubali story is here (Uncle trying to kill nephew, uncle-son plotting against mother-son, prince hiding his identify), and it has the thrilling epic periodic action. At the same time, the climax takes place on 2 ships, one attacking the other with sword fights and pirate stuff.

To think this film wasn’t even the highest grossing film of Desai in 1977- because it was his Amar Akbar Anthony! On top of that, these 2 films were only 2 of the 4 blockbusters he had in 1977.

What people now spend some 2 years and 300 crores to do, Desai did 40 years back- that too 4 times a year! Bankrupt industry we have, and every single director except SLB and maybe Hirani lack conviction.

Simmba looks like it will be a 150+ crore blockbuster! It’s going to make more than both Ajay Devgn and Akki’s cop movies! Ranveer is using a Recycled plot, recycled songs, and recycled cameos to get a blockbuster…we have a new superstar!

  5. Akshay Kumar sells most tickets, Ranveer Singh comes next, Ayushmann Khurranna surprises in 2018

While 2018 has been a superb year for the youngsters and relative newcomers, the Khans who have been reigning for decades have been given a wake up call.

All in all, while 2018 has been a superb year for the youngsters and relative newcomers with the new generation of actors not just bringing in exciting content but also winning hearts of the audiences, superstar Khans who have been reigning for decades have been given a wake up call.

2.0 is the biggest of them all, what with Rs 420 crore coming in collections. Out of these, while Rs 190 crore would be the final haul for the Hindi version, rest is from Tamil and Telugu versions. This also turned out to be Akshay Kumar’s biggest grosser ever as his last big outing was Toilet – Ek Prem Katha which had netted Rs 134.25 crore.

Meanwhile, his Gold had collected Rs 105 crore, though it would certainly have done more if not for the clash with Satyameva Jayate. On the other hand PadMan was his most acclaimed film of 2018 though it stood lower at Rs 82 crore.

Nonetheless, as an actor who has been an integral part of the film industry for more than a quarter of the century, it is his consistency in the business which is paying off in a huge way. There is certain ‘minimum guarantee’ that his films come with which makes filmmakers, exhibitors and distributors breathe easy while also giving a vote of confidence to the audiences.

This was pretty much evidenced in 2016 as well when he was the top scorer among all superstars, what with Airlift [Rs 129 crore], Rustom [Rs 128 crore] as well as Housefull 3 [Rs 109 crore] scoring a century each and bringing in cumulative numbers of Rs 366 crore.

Later in 2017 too he scored well with two back to back centuries, Jolly LLB 2 [Rs 117 crore] and Toilet – Ek Prem Katha [Rs 134.25 crore], which brought in Rs 251.25 crore collectively.

Of course the one who is leading from the front in terms of doing maximum movies and ensuring moolah at the box office is Akshay Kumar.

However, with Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor and Tiger Shroff demonstrating their solid pull and Ayushmann Khurranna, Rajkummar Rao and Kartik Aryan opening up newer avenues for Bollywood to experiment, it is going to be an exciting finish to the current decade.

  9. Simmba falters badly when it tries to be a meaningful social drama with a message that rings out as loud as the background score. The post-interval portion is packed with platitudes about the safety of women, an eyebrow-raising depiction of a fake encounter in a police station, a recommendation that rapists must be given the death penalty, a candle-light vigil and, for good measure, a mention of the 2012 Delhi gang-rape. The suggestion of a sequel in 2019 that will combine the characters of Bajirao Singham, Simmba and a third movie star leads to a diluted and unconvincing payoff.

Ranveer Singh’s energy and flamboyance ensure that Simmba appears more engaging than it often is, and Ajay Devgn’s well-timed cameo rescues the film from being a write-off. Simbba is all about its male movie stars. Sara Ali Khan has fewer scenes than some of the other characters, including Siddharth Jadhav as a member of Simmba’s posse. The movie has no use for her Shagun – so much for being on the side of women.

The salute sequence will be greeted with a thunderous applause. Siddharth Jadhav excels. Vaidehi Parashurami is wonderful. Ashwini Kalsekar is fantastic. Her dialogues in the climax will be greeted with applause. Ganesh Yadav and Ashok Samarth [the lawyers] do a fine job. Saurabh Gokhale is first-rate. Sarita Joshi is alright.

SIMMBA has a number of cameos, including the GOLMAAL gang [Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade and Kunal Kemmu]. Ajay Devgn’s introduction will be greeted with whistles and claps and his act is sure to find love. Last but not the least, there’s Akshay Kumar too. Again, the viewers are in for a treat.

With each passing day, collection will rise until 2nd jan, it will trend very well. Though, opening in morning is just around 35%, expect it to keep rising until 2nd jan.

  13. Actor Mahesh Babu’s Bank Accounts Frozen Over Tax Dues

HYDERABAD: The Goods and Services Tax department on Thursday said it has attached the bank accounts of Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu to recover service tax dues from him.
According to a press release issued by the Hyderabad GST Commissionarate, Mahesh Babu has not paid the Service Tax during 2007-08 for the taxable services he rendered as brand ambassador, appearance money and advertising for promotion of products among others.

“The total tax due from him was Rs. 18.5 lakh. Today the GST department has attached his bank accounts in Axis Bank and ICICI Bank for an amount of Rs. 73.5 lakhs which includes tax, interest and penalty, it said.

When contacted, a senior official of the GST department said Mahesh Babu failed to get any reprieve from any appellate authority on this issue.

“We have attached the bank accounts and started recovering.. We have recovered Rs. 42 lakh from Axis Bank today. Balance, ICICI bank has to pay by tomorrow. Otherwise action will be taken against ICICI Bank,” a official was quoted by news agency PTI.

    Friday 28 December 2018 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Zero could not make an impact at the box office as it collected 84 crore nett in its first week. The film opened well enough for the type of film it was but it was the weekend which was crucial as these typeof films should improve well over Saturday and Sunday but it was not to be for this film as it had a flat weekend. The first week number would be good for most films but is poor for such a big film.

The collections were okay till Wednesday when the big fall came after the national holiday. If the film could have done close to Monday on Wednesday it had a chance but that was never really on the cards. Zero has scored better in Delhi / UP, East Punjab and Bihar but even here at best the collections could be called average over the first five days. The film took a hit in these parts also after the big holiday.

The film will struggle in its second week and it could have another big fall on its second Friday. The daily first seven day figures for Zero are as follows.

    Friday – 19,35,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 17,00,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 18,25,00,000 apprx

      • Not a fan of Virat’s captaincy. I don’t understand this theory of team’s best player becoming the captain. Captaincy in itself is a skill and not everyone has it. Shastri as a coach is a joke to me. More like Virat’s puppet.

        • Virat is a very good captain..he oozes so much passion it’s almost contagious..and team clearly plays his brand of cricket win or lose..he doesnt believe in taking a backward step and I like it..I dont waht India to bat last on this wicket and unless the rain threat is for real the decision to bat is fine..yes we should have batted better though

          Like

        • Seriously, thinking about batting last and giving such reasons itself shows negativity. I mean bowlers bowled 66.5 overs out of which Jadeja, the spinner, bowled 25. Bowlers can’t complain of getting tired at this level with that much work (they already had good rest between 2nd and 3rd test). Aussies didn’t score much, so fielders weren’t running around much. Pitch is bad and we had almost 300 runs to play.
There is a threat of rain, but even if I ignore it and we get bowled for 100 we just giving away the momentum and Aussie will start batting 2nd innings with a something positive. If they would have followed on they would had no time to think, and would have felt like they need to climb an Everest.
And people getting overboard on avoiding to bat last thing. It’s a bad pitch I agree, but how many would have Aussies scored on this pitch in 3rd innings? The worst case scenario if someone gets in and scores a big 100 and Aussie score 400 plus. That will take almost 5-6 sessions on such a pitch. Match at the best would have drawn. This can even happen in 4th innings. And also we can’t even bat again now.

Just jumping around when a wicket falls or someones sledges is not aggression and positivity. It should reflect in the way one thinks and takes decisions. Now allowing to follow on is a negative decision. Ignoring a spinner at Perth was a bad decision. Where is the variety? Did we really think Australians no matter how bad this time will get scared with 4 fast bowlers. They would prefer to face our 4th fast bowler any day rather than any of our spinners on any pitch.

I don’t even mind if they just go nuts batting tomorrow and are bowled out before lunch. A quickfire 50-80 runs.

Here there is no way we would have got more than session and a half to play even if Aussies scored 400 plus and there was no rain. And even thinking this and about previous tests is negative. This situation would have never come here. Aussies worst case would have been bowled out for around 300 max. Mr.Captain and coach didn’t think this through. Honestly with Virat at helm I don’t even see we winning world cup. Takes one bad match to lose such tournaments and Virat is prone to make these. 20. Apparently when Karan Johar got to know of Rohit and Reliance’s plan to release Simmba a day earlier he requested them to not change the date. Reveals a source in the know, “Karan did not want Simmba to release on December 27 since that would have affected the seventh day business of his friend Shah Rukh Khan‘s film Zero. Though the SRK, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma starrer was not doing all that well at the box office, the early release of Simmba would definitely have hurt his personal relationship with Shah Rukh Khan. It was to avoid hurting his friend that Karan Johar decided not to prepone the release of Simmba”.

You still don’t get it. No major FILMMAKER/DIRECTOR/PRODUCER/STAR is working with them. And Anupam Kher used to be cast in every second movie made in Bollywood.

They didn’t choose this kind of work. They have no choice in this matter.

        • this interview was dated last year december,

Kher recently began shooting for his yet-to-be-titled 511th film in Ranchi, and says, “There’s just so much work to do these days. I’ve been getting a lot of good work as I get older, and I don’t want to stop. That’s why I stop people from calling me a veteran or a thespian or a legend. I feel awkward… I want to do more.”

and then, how do you know what their ambition is. Kiron kher is already an MP and anupam kher mayb eyeing a rajya sabha seat soon! Anupam himself was the national film institute chairman which he recently quit.

        • Kher is an actor. If he was a politician, he’d be in politics. Looks like he’d have to move over to other realms like politics only because no major name wants to work with him.

Whatever he is working in, whatever work he is getting, is completely insignificant compared to what he was doing earlier. This is called a dead end to one’s career.

And it’s because of his political opinions ONLY. As a character actor, he deserves to get work, but he isn’t getting any.

His last big budget film was? Even in Neeraj Pandey’s films he gets like 2 min roles. And he used to be part of all major blockbusters earlier.

Talking about the dialogue, Panse said: “In the Marathi trailer, there was a sentence — ‘Uthao lungi, bajao pungi’. It was Balasaheb’s slogan. It is history. He had said it. Even in his magazine, there were cartoons on south Indians. The censor board should understand that we have made a film keeping the character in mind and not the controversy. No 1: Akshay Kumar – 2.0 is a game changer. His biggest hit 2.0 along with two other success in 2018 (Padman and Gold) is precedented by 6 Hits in last two years. This is very good run. a big hit was needed to break the shackle which 2.0 gave in its Hindi run. All eyes on Kesari if he has to cement his position. His inability to give Big Hits will keep this rank vulnerable.

No 2: Aamir Khan – Dangal released in 2016 and ToH was supposed to be bigger hit. However ToH flopped and this changed the equation for Akshay. With no release in sight, he slides one rank down and could slide further if he doesn’t show in 2019.

No 3: Salman Khan – A force. Halo is gone post Race 3. Would need a blockbuster to sustain flurry of Akshay’s hits. ATBB will push him to No 1 again.

No 4: Ranveer Singh – Today a star is born via Simmba, which at the least is going to be superhit now. With Padmaavat and Simmba, he is now ahead of the curve among the younger stars. He need one more HIT in 2019 to enter top 3. A blockbuster in 2019 could see him No 1 also.

No 5: Ranbir Kapoor – Simbaa has impacted Ranbir the most. Ranbir now needs another superhit as he is doing very less volume and every movie needs to be a HIT at least.

No 6: Ajay Devgn / Ayushmaan Khurana – Ayushmann is now a star with two superhits – Badhaai Ho and Andhadhun. Both Ajay and Ayushmaan has potential hits on paper in 2019. Let’s see.

No 8: Varun / Tiger Shroff – October and Sui Dhaga was average but past films keep it going for Varun. Tiger’s Baaghi 2 is one of the biggest hit.

No 10 : SRK – He needs to reinvent now.

They wouldnt have been spouting hatred had the Adityanath’s not been doing it for so long either. It might sound anti-national to you, but really, it is all an offshoot of unresolved Partition paradox (as has been discussed by us umpteen times previously on this forum).

In any case, the BJP goose is already cooked. Can’t see them taking more than 20 seats in UP next time, and diminished pickings in the rest of the Hindi heartland as well. Would be very surprised if they even cross 150 in total! They snatched defeat from the jaws of victory the moment they appointed Yogi and totally wiped out the tremendous opportunity arising out of their UP state elections.

But that would also mean that the Cong would get to at least 120-130; still short of the 170-180 needed to form a stable anchor in a coalition. And in that scenario, it would be worse than 2004. Total Khichdi hone waala hai!

It’s not just Us vs Them. This is just an example of identity politics. This is the bigger umbrella under which all the offshoots emerge. Thackeray indulged in it when he targeted Tamilians in Bombay. At a larger level, it’s played out between Hindus and Muslims (also, some Khalistanis still exist in Canada). It’s just a tool to break apart a society. Segregate to such an extent that there is no unifying whole.

At a much lower level, it’s played out in the form of militant feminism or an extreme form of political correctness, which plagues all civil discourses these days. These are all divisive methods. And act as opportunities for people to harvest their own political ambitions.

And I agree the mahagathbandhan is more like the mahaTHUGbandhan. It’s hardly an alternative, let alone an appealing one.

  47. Simmba Has Good Day One – Huge In Mumbai

    Saturday 28 December 2018 00.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Simmba has a good first day thanks to its huge numbers in Mumbai circuit. The film is simply running riot in this circuit and will record the second highest opening day in the circuit after Sanju and it will be this Mumbai number that will tell where the final first day collections stand.

The all India collections look in the 21-22 crore nett range as per early estimates but could come in a little higher if the Mumbai number comes in higher than expected. The film will have collections of 12 crore nett apprx without Mumbai and the expectations are of 9-10 crore nett in Mumbai based on early figures.

The collections in most circuits are actually less than last weeks Zero but as Mumbai is double of Zero the all India figure comes out better than Zero. The film is likely to do well on the acceptance in Mumbai / Gujarat but how well it does will depend how well other circuits perform in the long run. It will be the biggest opening day for Ranveer Singh and the biggest non holiday opening day for Rohit Shetty.

Anupam’s approach to the role is one that of many accomplished actors: he thinks getting the externalities of the real –life character would instinctively give him access to the character’s inner life. This method of playing real-life characters is not fool proof .It worked for Ben Kingsley’s Gandhi. Here playing Manmohan Singh imitating that tinny voice is a fatal mistake. It makes the performance look like mimicry verging on mockery.

Nawaz on the other hand, seems to have got a grip over the inner life of Balasaheb Thackeray. He told me recently, “To become like him I had to first think like him. Be it Saddat Hassan Manto or Balasaheb Thackeray I don’t think the physical resemblance is that important.”

Nawaz doesn’t play Thackeray. He plays along.

  50. Top China Opening Days – Thugs Of Hindostan 7th
    Saturday 29 December 2018 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Thugs Of Hindostan has had a poor first day in China with business of $1.50 million which is the seventh best opening for an Indian film of all time. A few months big this was probably unthinkable that an Aamir Khan starrer could be so low in China considering the initials of his last two films but it was pretty much on the cars when advances opened and did not collect.

The film will lose heavily for Chinese distributors which is a first as far as Indian films are concerned as they have never fetched a price. The film still should still show growth on Saturday despite it being a film which has faced rejection wherever released but from a start like this it leaves it little chance as this one needed a big run in China. Secret Superstar will be huge number for an Indian film to topple in China.

The top opening days in China with the screenings till date are as follows.

    1. Secrect Superstar – $6,810,000 (55,865)

    2. Hindi Medium – $3,340,000 (45,300)

    3. Dangal – $2,490,000 (30,364)

    4. Bahubali – The Conclusion – $2,440,00 (52,959)

    5. Toilet Ek Prem Katha – $2,350,000 (57,136)

    6. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – $2,250,000 (20,302)

    7. Thugs Of Hindostan – $1,500,000 apprx (27577)

  51. BOI are no Chinese BO expert but it does seem that the Chinese distributors will now probably bear all the losses caused by TOH. YRF have been wise to get away from it.

It probably damages future Bollywood films prospects in China. I hope it doesn’t affect Aamir’s credibility there. It is like a cycle. Some previous good work and foundations laid for others run the risk of being undone here:

    https://boxofficeindia.com/report-details.php?articleid=4569

The 115 crore deal for China means its a near 375 crore final recovery on Thugs Of Hindostan for producers YRF who released the film themselves barring China. This is actually the highest recovery this year for all Hindi films including Sanju and Padmaavat. The film had also crashed everywhere else but film was on the producers book. It means the only losers in monetary terms will be the Chinese and maybe satellite and digital holders as the film was not liked and may not find the viewership over time to recover the huge prices paid for digital and satellite.

  52. The fact is that YRF have embarked on a poor quality film designed only for maximum revenue gains. They have milked Aamir’s stardom in China and India to the core.

it’s a pity Aamir has agreed to it. In the end, it was economically a safe film for YRF, no matter how poor it was.

The distributors and sub-distributors in India have beared the losses. The distributors in China are most probably going to bear heavy losses as well.

What saddens me is that it may affect the credibility earned by Aamir there. It had been hard earned through quality cinema which has appealed to the people there.

It’s merely one poor choice from Aamir and years of good work and dedication are affected. So many people lose money on both ends.

Future Bollywood films releasing there may be affected.

But the main culprits get away by recovering the money. Hard to find it fair.

    • I understand what you are saying and am with you as far as Aamir’s reputation is concerned: It’s massive in China and he would/can only climb up from there.

However, this also throws up the question, what should be ‘shipped’ to China? Have they rejected TOH, as an escapist film per-se? Because they are used to high technical standards in film-making? Or is it that the subject of the films more, and the fact Aamir’s associated to it, has worked? ALL his successes are with social-ills; education systems, women empowerment, etc., themes that resonate with the Eastern culture: Take them out, will he, and consequently, will the Hindi film industry succeed there?

Why not try out that? Can one have a limited release of RANGEELA, and then, ‘TZP’ or ‘PK’? Check what works more?

    • I think Aamir would take the audience there into account when he signs a film.

The problem is that when you at things chronologically, then things played out against him and YRF had a lottery in there.

Correct me if I am wrong, IIRC he accepted YRF’s offer for TOH early last year, shortly after Dangal released in India. After he signed TOH, a couple of months later, Dangal worked big time in China and then SS followed.

Probably even Aamir was surprised by the magnitude of his success and even he did not see it coming.

Had he been offered TOH around a year back as the film to be the successors to Dangal and SS in China, I am quite sure he would have opted for something else, taking the Chinese audience into account.

The problem for Aamir could be was that he had signed TOH prior to Dangal and SS release in China. YRF suddenly found themselves sitting on a gold-mine.

Definitely a fair statement; however, my faith in Aamir is more considering how he spans out his marketing strategies — for example, for that so-called, ‘modern’ vulgarity-ridden movie, DELHI BELLY, he went all out advertising that this isn’t for ALL folks; that this has disgusting language, et. al.,

Similarly, he was very clear that he didn’t want DHOBI GHAT to be promoted as an Aamir film, since it was not.

So, I really do not understand how he lost ‘sight’ over here…

        • Timing is a factor. One good thing is Aamir will probably never work with YRF again! I really don’t want a desperately designed film just for 2019. Don’t give 2 hoots for our blog’s star rankings!

        • Personally I have never seen Aamir signing a movie as quick as TOH in last decade or so. He takes lot of time and even took over a year to sign Dangal. Only 2 movies he signed in weeks are Rang De Basanti (it was called Paint it Yellow) and TOH in last decade. TOH was pure surprise and he just jumped into it once he heard the script and chance to work with Amitabh.

So, in that aspect.. Aamir rushing in movies is not his style. He should still take his time before okaying a movie as it comes with huge responsibility and expectations.

  54. Zero Has Heavy Fall On Day Eight
    Saturday 29 December 2018 12.15 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Zero had a huge fall on day eight as it collected in 0.75-1 crore nett region. The fall is a huge 95% from day one as the circuits that were doing better came down also and its not as if Simmba has set Delhi / UP, East Punjab and Bihar alight. The content has just been totally rejected like Thugs of Hindostan on Diwali.

The total collections of the film are in the 85 crore nett range after eight days. There will be growth over the weekend but it is pretty much irrelevent from this level. Zero could another 8-10 crore from here on and that will be it for the film. The South dubbed film KGF had better collections on day eight as it continues to well in Maharashtra.

The daily first eight day figures for Zero are as follows.

    Friday – 19,35,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 17,00,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 18,25,00,000 apprx

  55. KGF (Hindi) Is A Success – HIT In Maharashtra
    Saturday 29 December 2018 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The Hindi version of KGF collected 1.25 crore nett on day eight and although this is a 50% drop from the previous day it is a good hold as the film as mainly a one circuit film and in that circuit Simmba is huge competition as it flew out of the traps. the film has collected 22.50 crore nett so far in eight days.

KGF (Hindi) is a HIT film in Mumbai but has not done too well in other Hindi circuits but its that Mumbai business which makes the film a success. This is always the chance with a dubbed film that Maharashtra will take to it unless the look is not South Indian like a Bahubali or 2.0 then other circuits will give it a chance. KGF (Hindi) has scored across Maharashtra whether the cities fall in Mumbai circuit or CP Berar or Marathawada in Nizam.

The film has done business of 105 crore nett across all formats in India in eight days. The approx eight day figures of KGF (Hindi) are as follows.

    Friday – 2,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 3,00,00,000 apprx

    • Instead of posting sympathy post now, it would be better if Amitabh spoke to Kader Khan at least once in last 30 years and remember his old friend who was VERY important part of his movie journey and in his superstar image. What’s the point in posting now when Kader Khan himself can’t read it? He has been unhappy for decades that Amitabh forgot and ignored him.

Besides, I mentioned about Kader Khan few years back on this blog when BJP rejected his nomination for even PadmaShri. A unmissable part of any Bollywood movie from 80’s and 90’s and they can’t afford to give him basic PadmaShri award.

The reason I brought this up is, you started your comment with your dis-taste — or however you want to put it — for Amitabh not speaking to KK for 30 years — which I am assuming, you know, from your ‘internal’ sources; I haven’t read anything of that sort and do not know — since I am not privy to internal stuff like you —  and now putting up a public post. You then, secondarily, talked of the Padma Bhushan stuff.

If your insinuation is that Amitabh had a hand in KK not getting PB, that’s a serious allegation; and a different debate. However, if you have inside information or any public information about AB ditching KK for 30 years, kindly share it.

Just give us the order of your concern: what takes precedence; AB ignoring KK or KK not getting PB..

Yes, please do. Just like VK’s wife; or ex-wife, tweeted a letter recently where Amitabh praised VK, written in 1998 — undesservedly though, but that’s my thought — to the skies praising him for his performance in that that abhorrent remake of NAYAKAN, DAYAVAN.

  59. I’d not have sent TOH to China to learn it’s fate, that was crystal clear from every market in the world. Aamir’s wasted 10 days there for promotion – it could only be justified by a Secret Superstar type like gross.

I’d question the Chinese here as much as YRF and Aamir’s judgement. If you can see all the feedback on a film – would you make an exceptional payment? Unless it was all agreed pre India release.

But I’d give BOI a freepass like many do 😛

Bad business decision for all of Bollywood. Not sure the level of damage to Aamir’s brand though. That takes more than just one flop.

And even here it’s presumptuous to assume the worst as it’s only the first day.

“..It’s just a tool to break apart a society. Segregate to such an extent that there is no unifying whole…’

This reasoning was perhaps relevant up until the 30-40 yrs after 1947. India as a secured republic is not going to disintegrate, Period. There are very deep and broad inter-dependencies of various states to each other, of various communities to each other. Once upon a time, there were only 4 Metropolises with Mumbai being the biggest melting pot. Now, most second tier cities have diverse populations, that have made them become microcosms of people and the diverse ideas which are imbibed in them. So, IMHO, the fear of disintegration is unfounded for.

But what does need to happen is adequate representation of all communities and all castes. What were forward castes once have now been impoverished for several years. Even they need separate representation, eg Marathas, Patels, etc. There is injustice to those backward castes who convert and lose welfare. It is a smorgasbord of dis-enchanted masses.
It may actually be worthwhile for a Mahagathbandhan to duke it out for 5 years. All these family parties have now passed the baton to their next generations, who at least seem to be more forward thinking than their fathers. They also are more exposed to differing political thought than their fathers were.

As a core Modi supporter, it seems strange for me to say all of the above. TBH, the biggest disappointment has been his inability to wrest away the narrative from the clutches of the hard right fanatics. He accomplished this in Gujurat over just his first term as CM. But clearly, the national power of these hardliners has been too big for him to dismantle. It was alright to be supportive for a while, but clearly, lots of lines have been crossed. A highly casteist UP CM who goes around spouting crackpot theories is a back breaker. Its as if the powers that be within the BJP decided that the UP state victory was somehow a validation of hard right agenda. That victory was actually a result of hope amongst people that Modi would in fact move the party to becoming a better rainbow coalition. But the powers totally misread the victory, and they are now only playing to their own choir in their own echo-chamber. Certainly not a strategy for unity would you think?

Surely, a break from the reforms of the past 5 years, and the hardwork of the past 5 years will be detrimental. But who knows, maybe these scions of these family dynast parties have a sense of urgency now, and a better ability to recognize and address the growing aspirational classes, as well as global threats and trends. Hopefully, it will behoove them to keep trying and pushing forward with reforms and growth. Perhaps worth a try?

      Like

    • “.. how much did it take for Trump to destroy all the projects/policies?..”

Not an apples to apples comparison. No one in Indian politics is in anyway similar to Trump, certainly not Modi. In fact, Modi has been an Enforcer and Implementer of a whole lotta Congi schemes/ideas of the past. All these were gathering dust due to the ineptitude or inefficiency of the previous 5 yrs of UPA. His ability has always been to complete tasks and projects to fruition. On the flipside, his natural instinct to distrust anyone who has stains of corruption has left him short of actual new ideas. His only radical idea was DeMon and we all know what happened with it.

Coming back to the UPA, its as if they were so secure in power, and so certain of a 2014 victory, that they simply ground all activity to a halt; with the thought that a newly anointed Gandhi would cut all the ribbons from 2014 onwards. They would just wait for RaGa to don the mantle in 2014 and bask in glory by completing all those schemes/projects. Having simply under-estimated the Modi blitzkrieg of 2014, even they would now realize that the people will be unforgiving if ongoing projects/schemes and transformations are not completed.

I agree, that all of these expectations are Risky Drunken imaginations! However, all these sick rightwing fanatical tendencies on display have been a cause for total disenchantment.

Guess it’s India’s/our destiny to be ruled by idiots, and to be forever in a paralytic state; thank God for the resilience of the people of India..do not know how long it will last…

But understand that for hundreds of millions of people, Modi was sold as a messiah who would get it done. And for them every new day is a day of pain. It would require tremendous patience and foresight on their part to give him another chance. For a betting person, it would be impractical to expect the masses to have that patience/foresight.

If you had picked Cong in 2014, its quite clear that you too are delusional in the belief that a Pappu Prince could’ve kept India floating from 2014-18. With the way things were going circa 2013-14, it would not be inconceivable to have had the Rupee at least touching 100 by 2018. Pls see how our neighbour has fared with a 50% currency crash in 2018 alone.
Simple question: Do you in your most charitable moment, give at least a token pass to Modi for trying hard to revive India and its standing in the world? Before you ask how that is so, please look at relevant facts of the economy, stock market, govt tax stats, etc etc.
The promise of Modi was to create a rainbow coalition, and a welfare state by way of shoring up govt revenues through increase in taxation compliance. He sorta walked halfway on this target, since 4 yrs is far too less for such ambition to be fulfilled. Had the rightwing lunatics been kept at bay, such disenchantment wouldn’t ever have occurred.
And you clearly misunderstand why, this time around, I place slightly more confidence in the pappu-princes of the political dynasts of India. Had it not been for the Modi blitz, these guys wouldve never woken up from their apathetic slumber. At least Modi has turned them into Temple hopping psuedo-Hindus for a start!!

The best that can be said of this is that it’s, perhaps, a canny reversal of the usual “Black Mirror” formula; usually, the show depicts technology controlling humans, while now, a human is guiding the actions of a set of pixels that looks like Fionn Whitehead. But that’s sunnier than a work that whiffs so badly when it comes to justifying its own existence merits. Elsewhere on television, and elsewhere in “Black Mirror’s” run, grand questions about the nature of our existence have been probed with granular interest and, better, real curiosity. Simply ladling a dose of hackneyed language about determinism atop a work with infinite plots but a half-written story doesn’t cut it.

But despite all this hullabaloo & so called ‘super-stardom’ of Ranveer, Simmba opening was below par and less than Zero despite Rohit Shetty’s presence as director & a huge chartbuster song!! It was only after positive feedback from the early shows, the movie picked up from afternoon onwards but it didn’t open well in the morning. Today stardom is about opening a movie on the first day as word of mouth spreads like wild fire in this age of social media & going by the opening of Simmba, Ranveer Singh doesn’t have that pull yet!! Ranbir is still ahead of him in terms of pan India popularity as is evident by his opening numbers across genres. It would take few more years to topple Aamir & Salman from their numero uno positions as they have massive following pan India which would be very hard to match for the current crop of stars.

    Sunday 30 December 2018 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Simmba showed an upturn in business on day two of around 15% as it collected in the 23.50-24 crore nett range. The growth is not huge but the film is up from a good start and that puts the film in a good position. Its a mass film which means Sunday is the growth day for this film the families and mass crowd come to the theaters.

The film showed growth all over the country but is still being driven by Mumbai circuit which is doing excellent business. Gujarat had growth which was more than the national average which is very good for a Saturday as the big growth in Gujarat is on Sunday. Bihar is a circuit which could have done better as is a single screen dominated circuit but the first two day figures are less than love story genre film like Zero.

The two day collections of Simbaa are 44.25 crore nett apprx and it should cross 70 crore over the three days on a worst case scenario. The first two day collections of Simmba are as follows.

    Friday – 20,50,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 23,75,00,000 apprx.

    TOTAL – 44,25,00,000 apprx

The main thing for the film was to grow on Saturady and that has happenned so it has good chances to get the holiday benefit over Monday and Tuesday. Zero was a rejected film but still held pretty well on Monday as it was the day before a big holiday and ticket rates were held at weekend rates.

Its the same case here with Simbaa and has it has gone up on Saturday which means reports are far better than Zero it could put up very strong numbers on Monday and Tuesday.

His Master’s Voice (HMV), which is known worldwide for its iconic logo showing a dog listening to a record player, is the last major music retailer in Britain and has been suffering for years from the decline in physical sales of CDs and DVDs. Hilco Capital, a restructuring company which rescued HMV when it previously entered administration in 2013, said that the board of HMV had decided to appoint administrators but its 125 stores in Britain would continue trading for the moment.

The company employs around 2,200 people.

“It is disappointing to see the market, particularly for DVD, deteriorate so rapidly in the last 12 months as consumers switch at an ever increasing pace to digital service,” said Paul McGowan, executive chairman of HMV and Hilco.

“During the key Christmas trading period the market for DVD fell by over 30% compared to the previous year,” he said, adding that this decline was “unsustainable”.

[That ISI agent dressed up in a Pathani suit and running around in Jaisalmer is LMAO shit: agents are supposed to ‘slip’ into the crowd, not stand out!]

I am still not sure why Abraham Sir got this project or produced it. Akshay is born, or rather, re-incarnated to do such roles. He would have brought so much of gravitas to the role. JA crying at the end; and all I could think he was he was crying since inspite of the successful nuclear tests, he was still being tested as an actor, and he failed miserably. [And he has a companion, Diana’s Panty; it’s like a kabaddi going on between the two: I am bad, no, I am bad!!]

If there’s any contribution of his, he should write it in a book: HOW NOT TO KNOW TO ACT and STILL GET FILMS — and it will be truly helpful to aspiring non-actors.

Jesus, the way he acts, walks, it is such a joke; such a pain to watch. It is especially painful since he is now into these ‘meaningful’ film territory. His sole purpose, as a man, should have been, and God intended to, I guess, was to give orgasms to women – and some men – but he ended up in films. Wish he was born in LA and had Sunny Leone as his advisor..

On the other hand, a great tribute to the legacy of Dr. Kalam, Vajpayee, and mainly, the brains and brawns behind these tests. Wonderful.

    • Movie name is Parmanu! I think Parmanu’s success for John is not about acting but actually single handedly backing, producing and delivering success without much promotion. It is not that easy in today’s time. When I think of John, somehow remember about Abhishek who has been trying for ages to produce a movie with himself as lead actor but it always stop once it comes to finances or budgets Both started around same time and got 1st hit in Dhoom and then did Dostana and after a decade and half John is still managing his career and choices lot better than Abhishek while not even being 10% as talented as Abhishek. Like recently Sushant Singh was unable to shoot the signed movie – RAW and drop out for difference in dates. Bunty Walia who’s close friend of Abhishek and also producer wanted to offer the movie but then financiers dropped out and then he had to get John Abraham in place of Abhishek from getting the movie getting shelved.

    • Parmanu is the second in series of the movie about the work done by the Vajpayee NDA-1 government.

TEPK was probably first to highlight NDA-2/Modi’s effort on Swachch bharat which was not entirely understood by urban indians living in apartments and working in offices. I think they have still not understood.

Akshay in Parmanu would have typecasted him for sure. He would have taken Parmanu to 130-150 Cr and would have been a better choice as actor. But he was not considered/offered and it is good for him. He just narrowly came out of his newly built image via 2point0 and broke the image successfully.

Master, i agree to whatever you said on John and Abhishek with a pinch of salt. I 100% agree that Abhishek started off with John…was better than him for almost a decade getting best of the projects ( a cop role in Dhoom series)….but he let it go…while John laboured doing side kick roles, working hard on his body and producing movies like Vicky donor, madras cafe and built his own brand now. He is now going to milk it in 2019 with 3-4 movies of same genre and using the image that gave him success in Satyamev Jayate. Happy for him as he is self made.

      • Mrinal Sen, the doyen of Bengali cinema, has passed away at 95. The legendary man behind the camera leaves a rich legacy of films that were socially relevant and often political. His masterpieces include Bhuvan Shome, Mrigaya, Ek Din Pratidin, Khandahar, Akash Kusum, Patadik and so on. One of his films, Neel Akasher Neechey, will be remembered for his unique storytelling and also being the first film ever to be banned in independent India. The simple story of a bond between a housewife and a street vendor was banned for its deeply political overtones.

The black and white film based in the India of 1930s under the British Raj was not allowed release because it showed an India where the rich and socially progressed people did not care about the disadvantaged even though they lived under the same roof, the blue sky. Hence the name Neel Akasher Neechey, Under the Blue Sky. The film was deemed to be carrying a Communist message, too uncomfortable for a socialist regime like that of Nehru.

But, what we miss from the original is the bromance between hero & villain, the iconic fight at Interval bang, the essence in the police station fight (oops! spoiler) that gives you goosebumps all over in the original, the twists and turns in the sentimental court scene that makes you cry all over, and the climax fight that serves the villains right and leaves the audience with a satisfactory feeling.

It is hard for us to admit that the characterization of Sangram Balerao is missing the much-loved attitude and mannerism from the original version of Daya. Jr.NTR’s portrayal of Daya is hard to outshine as the character is filled with grey shades, a negative attitude, and a killer mannerism which we already had witnessed Ranveer’s iconic negative shade performance of Khilji in Padmaavat, we believe he could have pulled it off effortlessly. If that was included in this remake then it would have been “Sone Pe Suhaga”.

To conclude, Rohit & Ranveer’s Simmba is really a mass masala entertainer with a blockbuster written all over it and is indeed different from the original. Fans fighting on social media over which version is best and spreading negativity can sit back and relax now. SIMMBA is already a HIT and Ranveer Singh is at his best!

    Friday – $512,873

    Saturday – $598,601

Zero had collected $1,036,126 over its first weekend and Simmba is heading for $1.6 million. The film is generally doing very well in Overseas with strong numbers in Gulf also which collected a little under $1 million on Thursday and Friday so is set for a huge weekend total

In one of the interviews David and Rumi Jaffrey mentions that Kader Khan being the master of dialogue writing used to see the scene on that day and then twist it completely and shoot and lifts up the comedy quotient 10 times. Govinda was the same with lot of improvisations. So, I would term Bachchan era dram and Govinda era comedy as two important milestones in Kader Khan’s career!

Gujarat has recorded crazy numbers on Sunday with collections set to be 4 crore nett. Gujarat and East Punjab are similar sized markets and the collections will be 4 crore nett and 2.50 crore nett respectively on Sunday which shows how big Gujarat is on Sunday.

The places which recorded lower collections on day one are also recording very good numbers on Sunday though Mumbai continues to lead with collections set to be around 13 crore nett. Bihar is the slight disappointment as it is a single screen circuit so should be better but maybe because of the film has a Maharashtra feel it has affected collections there.

The film should hold up strongly over Monday and Tuesday with Wednesday being the crucial day as ticket rates will come down and the holiday period will be over.

In fact the discussions were done and the deal was closed. Ranveer was all set to start shooting when Shah Rukh Khan not only showed interest in the role; he also offered to step in as the producer.

“The cast was changed overnight and Ranveer found himself out of Zero, making way for Shah Rukh Khan. Now that Zero is showing every sign of being a box office disaster Ranveer must be having the last laugh,” says a source in the know.

This is not the first occasion when Ranveer has been unceremoniously dumped for a bigger star. In 2015 Ranveer was all set to play the lead Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet when Ranbir Kapoor showed a keen interest in the film. Kashyap changed the cast without even informing Ranveer.

And everyone knows what happened to Bombay Velvet.

Rana is not the only replacement in the film. In October, filmmaker Sajid Khan had to step down as its director after he was accused of sexual harassment.

“It would have been difficult for me had I not written the screenplay and dialogues of the film. Whenever I narrate, I do it like a stand-up act. All the actors… even producers make it a point that I am present on sets. I was in Jaisalmer while the shooting was happening there.

The show which highlights the stories of unapologetic women who have broken barriers and stereotypes had popular personalities like Sunny Leone, Mallika Dua and Gauri Shinde giving a sneak peek into their lives.

The new addition to the glorious list is none other than Masaba Gupta, one of the leading fashion designers of our country, who talked about how she has been trolled for sharing her struggles related to acne and body issues across social media platforms.

She discussed her constant battle to accept the way she is, why women shouldn’t be worrying about their physical appearance, how she fought with her body issues, how one can effectively stop body shaming, racist comments which she received in her day-to-day life, among other topics.

When questioned by Kareena, ‘What women want with their bodies’? She said. “I guess woman want to be told that they should be comfortable with the way they are. They don’t need to continuously work on themselves out of pressure to come across as beautiful. Come as you are and celebrate it. Also, I believe that it shows on your face what you are from inside.”

Further stressing on it, Kareena who is acing the role of a radio jockey on the show adds, “When it comes to body-shaming, the first advice we get to hear from people around us is self-love. But I believe that to love yourself, you need to first accept yourself and feel normal about it. Until and unless we aren’t comfortable in our skin, we won’t feel comfortable in our clothes.”

Speaking on how she deals with faceless aggressive people trolling, insulting and shaming her on social media, she said, “I counter-attack sometimes as it gives me a feeling of standing up for myself. But there have been times when I have effectively dealt with them by not getting aggressive and making them understand my perspective which has actually worked in my favour. Personally, I feel that it has to be tackled in this way on social media as there is no other way around.”

Talking about the racist comments she received from people around her, she said, “I don’t understand this as we are a very colorful country from North to South. I fail to get people’s obsession with fair skin which has always baffled me. Not only this, but sometimes I feel worried to raise a child of mine into this world if the child turns out to be dark skinned.”

In addition to tackling social media evils, the duo also spoke about jokes, which often include fat-shaming or color shaming.

Speaking about this, Masaba said, “Some are said in good fun. If it fits the context, it’s ok. But at the same point of time, it can’t be all about it which will be too extreme and sad.”

Thugs Of Hindostan Poor Weekend In China – Less Than Pad Man
    Monday 31 December 2018 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Thugs Of Hindostan has done very poorly in China with the business being hardly better than another Aamir Khan starrer PK which was released in 2015 in China. The collections were $4.75 million apprx There was huge demand for the next Aamir Khan starrer after Dangal and Secret Superstar and that is why it fetched a price despite it being a film that would hardly relate with the Chinese audience. The bets were on the starpower of Aamir Khan but that will only work in a certain type of film in China which has appealing content for the female audience.

It will be tough for Hindi film to reach the mark of Dangal or Secret Superstar but the demand for Hindi films is growing with even films like Sui Dhaag and Andhadhun finding buyers. The average MG has more than double compared to what films like PK, Dangal or Hindi Medium fetched. Thugs of Hindostan is likely to crash out over the weekdays.

  105. Simmba Is Very Good In Overseas – 6th Best For 2018
    Monday 31 December 2018 12.45 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Simmba has done very well in Overseas with collections of $5 million plus The business is excellent in US / Canada especially while Australia has recorded big numbers as well as Gulf. The $5m mark for Hindi films but for a Maharashtra based masala film it is a huge number. The film may well go and do over $10 million whereas a film like Singham Returns did $4.1 million plus and also a more Overseas friendly (being a comedy film ) compared to Simmba did $7.25 million apprx..

Last week Zero had grossed $4,100,000 from the five main markets of United Kingdom, US / Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Pakistan and Simmba has done $4,500,000 from the same. The main difference is US / Canada and Australia though Zero had one day less in Gulf which meant it lost around $500k. Despite the lead for Simmba in the main markets it will probably struggle to reach the figures of Zero as it had a smaller release compared to Zero in the smaller markets due to the reach of Shahrukh Khan.

The film is the sixth best opener Overseas of the year with an outside chance of being fifth. Another Ranveer Singh film Padmaavat is the top opener of 2018 and it is also the all time top opener but there Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a huge factor whose name has tremendous value Overseas especially in US / Canada and United Kingdom.

Director Prashanth Neel has delivered a pan-India success here and one waits to see where does the Hindi version land up now.
Box Office Update: KGF [Hindi] grew well on Sunday and in the process collected 2.25 crore*. The film has seen a steady increase in momentum right through the weekend with Saturday [1.75 crores] better than Friday [1.25 crores] and now Sunday showing further jump. This should ensure that collections would be decent today and tomorrow as well with over 1 crore each expected at the least.

So far, the Yash starrer has collected 26.70 crores* and 30 crores would now be comfortably surpassed before the close of the second week. Director Prashanth Neel has delivered a pan-India success here and one waits to see where does the Hindi version land up now. Since there is not much competition in weeks to follow, 35 crore lifetime for the film is a given and anything over and above that would be an added bonus.

As for Zero, it stayed very low on Sunday as well with mere 1.50 crores* coming in. The film has now collected 92.50 crores* and at best would reach 95 crore before the close of the second week. Post that it looks unlikely that it would hit the 100 crore mark. Disaster.

Watch 2nd half of Simmba. It is exactly what you say won’t work. It is 80’s and 90’s movie which Sunil Shetty has done multiple times. If only content worked, Simmba would be huge flop.

Its all about the timing. SImmba came when Ranveer singh is on the high and it overcomes the negativity even with such a shoddy 2nd half.

This so-called ‘great’ theory that’s being imposed — of content being king — is BS. The INDIAN public — and I include myself in this group — is puerile, to put it kindly.

Just because the 3 Khans flopped, or just because a remake of a third-rate Telgu movie suceeded, doesn’t mean content reigns! The very fact that SIMBAA succeded is a reminder!

        Has anyone, a non-Telgu, seen TEMPER? It’s pathetic…

Salman has done it for many years and he still can do for few more years with makeup and vfx on his face/body. But, this is going to be difficult for him aswell.

  122. Saw Simma this afternoon. There was a much larger audience at my theater on the 4th day for this movie than there was the first day for Zero. Overall if you like Rohit Shetty’s film’s, you will love this one. If you were a fan of Singham, you will become a fan of Simmba now.

I had a great time, was very entertained by this film. Within the Rohit Shetty universe, I think this might be his strongest film? I think it’s because he finally gets a hero actor who can do it all. I thought he was better at the comedy/goofy scenes than Ajay D in Singham, and better at the action /screaming match scenes than SRK in CE/Dilwale. Ranveer just kills it. He does everything you expect him to do in each scene. The basic story is from Temper, however most of the second half isn’t. I am glad it is different, a lot of Temper was trash lol. But I get why Rohit Shetty used the basic premise. The rogue cop parts are pretty funny. They smartly kept the transformation scene at the police station, however didn’t have that humor between Ranveer and Sonu like they did NTR and Prakash Raj. Also the climax was completely different.

First half is very entertaining with mostly comedy and some romance. The plot picks up towards interval, and the second half is all action drama. It’s not as bad as Zero in terms of 1st half and 2nd half being two different movies. The Singham touch came at a great time. All the side actors nail their role, and it makes a different. Sonu Sood I think was better here than in Dabangg. Sara Ali Khan is kind of wasted, but good in the scenes she’s in. It’s like the Sonakshi roles in Dabangg- hope Sara’s career doesn’t pan out the same way. Music is decent, but song placement is the best for a Rohit Shetty film. Aankh marey is a chartbuster and comes at the perfect time. The love song is just standard Swiss romance. The entry song isn’t that good, but the video is great. But the BGM is very catchy. Thaman kills it with the Simmba tune. The Simmba-Singham theme mashup was great.

Ranveer Singh has finally arrived. For me, he is finally a superstar. He owns every single scene. I’ve always had my apprehensions about Ranveer Singh- for some reason I didn’t completely like him, maybe because he’s so loud. But all his crazy energy works so well here. Whether its action, comedy, or those loud intense screaming match scenes, he absolutely kills it. I know other industries are used to this, but it was nice seeing a young star doing these masala roles – because Ranveer has age on his side and so can dance and fight better than the 90s generation imo. That being said, Singham’s cameo happened at the perfect time, and the audience went wild in a Chicago theater. Same for another superstar’s cameo. Between Ranveer and Ranbir, I am definitely a fan of Ranveer more after this year. Ranbir cannot do action/masala to save his life, I think that will really affect him being a huge star.

Rohit Shetty really has created his own universe, and I see no signs of him messing up! He’ll do the Akshay cop movie in 2019, then probably Golmaal 5 in 2020, Singham 3, the a Singham-Simmba-Akshay’s character crossover multistarrer film in 2021? Then repeat with Simmba 2 in 2022, Akshay cop movie sequel 2023, Golmaal 6 2024. Then another crossover super cop movie in 2025 with a baahubali/avengers type ending and then part 2 in 2026. The man is set for the next decade.

    • When I first saw Ranveer Singh, I thought he’d never last in Bollywood. Didn’t have the looks and since I never watched his films, I had no clue about his acting talent either.

The first film of his that I saw was Lootera, and I was pleasantly surprised. His was a very subdued, low-key performance, perfectly in sync with the tone and pitch of the film.

Then I saw him in Bajirao Mastani and this time, I was mighty impressed. In a grand theatrical, he upped his pitch and looked authentic, all at the same time.

That film made me a convert. He’s an actor and it’s no surprise because he was in fact part of Makrand Deshpande’s theatre group. He also picked theatre as his minor during his Bachelor’s as well. And that’s always a plus in my book.

Between him and Ranbir, I’d easily pick Ranveer. In fact, apart from Shahid Kapoor, I don’t think anyone matches up to him — as far as acting talent is concerned. The fact that he can do a complete masala film and bring in the crowds is a big thing as well. So, congrats to him. He really deserves it.

Two women below the age of 50 have said they offered prayers at the Sabarimala temple in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district, a claim denied by police.

Two women below the age of 50 have said they offered prayers at the Sabarimala temple in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district early on Wednesday, a claim denied by police.

A high alert has been sounded throught the state, and the police have also tightened security.

The women are the first to enter the Sabarimala temple after the Supreme Court in September last year allowed women of all ages to pray there breaking the centuries-old ban against those menstruating. Before them, no women between the age of 10 and 50 could enter the temple amid protests by devotees.

Bindhu, a lawyer, and activist Kanakadurga told a news channel that they offered prayers at the hilltop shrine dedicated to Lord Ayyappa 3am in the morning. They claimed they came in men’s attire and two dozen police officers in plains clothes accompanied them.

Reports said both came in an ambulance and police discreetly made arrangements for them. The women have also released pictures of them worshipping at the temple.

Their efforts to enter the temple were foiled by angry devotees two weeks ago and police reportedly advised them not to make their pilgrimage plan public and offered them all help if they come discreetly.

The president of the Travancore Devasom Board, which runs the temple, A Padmakumar said he came to know about it through media reports. He said the board will examine CCTV visuals.

The tantri or the supreme priest of the temple Rajeevaru Kandararu said he will comment only after confirming the incident.

    • Entering through side entrance was probably allowed all the time before 1990s. There was a Tamil movie in 1990s on which Nambiyar would say women are not allowed in Sabarimala through sacred 18 steps. But they can always enter through the side entrance. This was later debated and High court banned the entry later.

  135. Simmba Competes For All Time Record On Tuesday
    Wednesday 02 January 2019 11.45 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Simmba collected a huge 26 crore nett on Tuesday which is one of the highest first Tuesday collections of all time. The Tuesday collection is among the the top three of all time and could be a non Bahubali – The Conclusion record if the final collections can go up a little. Basically a chance of being the highest Tuesday ever for an outright Hindi film.

The growth overall is a little muted for the New Years holiday as much of the growth was baked into the Monday figure. It was the same last with Xmas. The NETT collections have grown by 20% but in real terms the growth was less as the new Tax rates were implemented. they were probably not implemented in very cinema in the country but most have. The growth in GROSS collections is less as ticket rates are less.

The film has now collected 122 crore nett plus in five days and Wednesday will see the first drop in collections and it remains to be seen where the film lands. The film started strongly mainly in Maharashtra but did very well all over the country on Tuesday. The collections of Simmba till date are as follows.

    Friday – 20,50,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 23,75,00,000 apprx.

    Sunday – 31,00,00,000 apprx

    Monday – 21,50,00,000 apprx

    Tuesday – 26,00,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 1,22,75,00,000 apprx

According to reports, the film’s Hindi version has not just survived the competition against the biggies such as Ranveer Singh’s Simmba and Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero but is also recording a steady trend in terms of its theatrical collections.

The movie is said to be racing towards Rs 150 crore mark at the box office. Meanwhile, the filmmakers will release the film in Singapore on January 3 even as it is doing well in the United States and the United Kingdom.

    • KGF has done really well. Bollywood had a pretty strong year but obviously it’s got competition from south films, Hollywood films and needs some ideas.

The 3 biggest grossers are looking like Sanju (biopic), Padmaavat (historical) and Simbaa (remake of South film).

Barring 4-5 whistle worthy scenes (Ajay D’s entry being the best among them) this film has nothing in it to match up to the 2 Singham films or tge best of this genre Dabangg. Its surprising how the word of mouth is positive!

Just talking. After thinking about it for days.

Why recent Indian films didn’t “do well” in China?

After Dangal & Secret Superstar made huge money in China, more and more filmmakers & businessmen from both China & India have given upcoming Indian films higher expectations. But none of those titles could hit $50M, and most even failed to top ¥100M / $15M. People start to think why Indian films suddenly went wrong.

Most(probably all) Indian film studios have no idea what Indian films are facing at this point, or they don’t realize the embarrassed situation they are in. To be honest, this is not their fault, and even most Chinese film studios can’t figure it out. But it’s actually not difficult to understand why, people just need to look back on the whole things. And it will be able to be explained.

I personally want to summarize it in three words: Expectation, Acceptability, Demand.

Have a look at the opening performance of all those Indian films released in China, only two titles did make $10M-plus on opening weekend. Though Dangal ended with incredible $188M in China, but it actually debuted with only $12M on it’s opening weekend. Secret Superstar has the best opening weekend performance of Indian films, and the number is $27M / ¥175M. Yes, most analysts & film studios would think it’s good enough for Indian films, especially considering Indian films were doing far better than any other non-english films. This thought is really really so right, but it also causes people to misunderstand things about Indian film. I don’t have a better example, so I’m going to say this: When it comes to Hollywood films, people always expected if it would make $50M-plus, $100M or even $200M on opening weekend. Why so high? Because we all know there are high expectations. When people hear a Hollywood film is going to release in China, the first thought comes to their mind is brilliant visual effect or high-budget or any element that can really make them feel exciting. Hollywood is a synonym of those words, and HLW probably is the only one which can make those incredible things come true. But if I say a Bollywood film is going to release in China, most Chinese will not have any feeling about it, because Bollywood, or Tollywood or Kollywood means nothing to them. They don’t really know what things that Indian films can bring to them, and they don’t have much interest on Indian films. Then, the expectations are low, and the openings can’t be huge.

But low expectation doesn’t mean Chinese will not accept it. Some Indian films still can survive after a low debut, and we all saw how incredible that Dangal did. So we know Chinese definitely can accept things from India, and they can accept many different cultures from rest of the world. The question is, what kind of film Chinese would accept, what they can’t? It comes to why Dangal & Secret Superstar can be acceptable, and other can’t make that great? We all know it’s because Aamir Khan, but most don’t know why. General audience in China started to have some good feeling on Indian films when 3 Idiots came. Before that, Chinese didn’t have a good impression on Indian films. Many believed Indian films were boring because they always showed singing and dancing. So Indian films were even meaning something negative to most Chinese. This kind of thoughts are still existed today. But 3 Idiots make things feel better. China also have the same problems with India in some aspects, and recent Aamir Khan’s films can always get the point. The story & main theme of 3 Idiots are so good & emotional that Chinese audience can response. So Chinese always have a special feeling on Aamir Khan. When PK came to Chinese theaters, more and more audience realized: wow, it’s him, the star in 3 Idiots. From that moment, Aamir Khan means the whole Indian films to many Chinese. No Aamir Khan, they only remember singing & dancing for Indian films. That’s why general people in China can’t accept most Indian film. They don’t have anything that can get people’s responses. And then, you will understand why so many film studios don’t know how to do marketing jobs for Indian movies but putting Aamir Khan’s praises in their posters or trailers in China.

Aamir Khan’s name is not everything. It finally comes to demand. Maybe I can accept you, but it doesn’t mean I really need you. We can see there were many good Indian films released in China with good contents, and WOM & reviews from general audience are also good. But they still can’t make more than $50M lifetime gross. Why? I think Indian films studio should know it better than anyone else: because Chinese don’t need it, at least they don’t always need it. Local contents + HLW contents can satisfy them in most time. Baahubali & Thugs are something that HLW can offer to Chinese. If one day China can have power to make this kind of movies, HLW will also lose many market shares. People always want to see their own cultures.

So back to the question: Why recent Indian films didn’t “do well” in China? I think the most accurate answer is, they didn’t do bad, they didn’t go wrong, they didn’t have any fault, those performances are what they deserve, it’s just that Dangal got something right, and Chinese can react to it. I think if those filmmakers & businessmen who want to make money in China only think why recent films didn’t make good, they probably will never find the right way. If they can ask themselves why Dangal can make success, they will learn more. Aamir Khan is the reason(probably the only reason) that Chinese can accept some Indian films at this point. They really should spend more time on learning it if they want to make good in here.

My advice to those filmmakers & businessmen is, finding more ways to let Chinese audience accept Indian films firstly. You can’t always expect Aamir Khan to save you. Higher acceptability means more films can survive after low openings. Secondly, establishing expectations. This will help them to build audience base. So they can get more chances to make big money, and they don’t have to always try their luck. In the course of time, these movies will be part of audience’s must-see movies. They will be demanding.

But don’t misunderstand me. All these things are based on being themselves. I don’t hope Hollywood or Indian film studios make movies for pleasing local audience and lose their own things. And Chinese never need foreign films to please themselves. They will be very happy if they can see more different things.

Simbaa Sets ALL TIME RECORD On Tuesday

Simmba set an ALL TIME RECORD on Tuesday with the highest ever collections on a Tuesday for an outright Hindi film. Bahubali – The Conclusion is on top even with 10-12% of the Hindi market missing but that film was not from teh Hindi film industry. Also its going to take time for the records of that film to start getting beaten.

Sanju earlier this year had collected 21.62 crore and Simmba has surpassed that by margin with 28 crore nett though it was a holiday for Simmba and not for Sanju but both films had enhanced ticket rates. The film beat the record of Kick which was the highest Tuesday for an outright Hindi film before Simbaa. In terms of GROSS numbers it will be behind Kick but still ahead of the likes of Dangal and Sanju.

Below are the top fifteen first Tuesday collections of all time.

    1. Bahubali 2 (Hindi) – 29.78 crore (Enhanced Ticket Rates)

    2. Simmba – 27.93 crore (Holiday)

    3. Kick – 26.82 crore (Holiday)

    4. Dangal – 22.39 crore (Enhanced Ticket Rates)

    5. Sanju – 21.62 crore apprx (Enhanced Ticket Rates)

    6. Tiger Zinda Hai- 21.60 crore (Enhanced Ticket Rates)

    7. Krrish 3 – 21.33 crore (Holiday)

    8. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 20.78 crore (Partial Holiday)

    9. PK – 19.87 crore (Enhanced Ticket Rates)

  148. Kollywood trends in 2018
    Sreedhar Pillai

As we are inching close to New Year, we look back at some of the major trends that reshaped the business in Tamil cinema
2018 has turned out to be a trend-setting year for Kollywood as far as marketing and content are concerned. Needless to say, the superstar films have gotten bigger and opened up newer markets. There was an additional growth in the overseas market, with four Tamil films crossing the $1 million mark in the US. The highest grosser worldwide was 2.0 (including Hindi and Telugu versions) but in Tamil Nadu, Sarkar turned out to be the winner.

The business in the state was clearly split, with a division between urban and rural audiences. Tamil films such as Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, Tamizh Padam 2 and 2.0, despite making great business in urban centres, made average to above-average business in rural areas. Karthi’s Kadaikutty Singam did good business in rural areas. The division is sharp, as urban areas are monopolised by multiplexes, while the single screens still call the shots in rural areas.

    Girl power
A welcome change has been the rise of women power at the box-office. Nayanthara’s back-to-back releases Kolamavu Kokila and Imaikkaa Nodigal not only had a good opening, but went on to become hits. Another film with the presence of a strong female was 96 starring Trisha Krishnan, which became a sensational hit. At the end of the year, Aishwarya Rajesh’s Kanaa, a sports-based story of a woman cricketer, triumphed against all odds. The film is turning out to be a sleeper-hit among the Christmas releases. The success of Kanaa has given confidence to producers, who are now backing a lot of women-centric films. One of the main reasons for the success of women-centric films and content-driven films like Raatchasan, Pyaar Prema Kaadhal and Pariyerum Perumal has been the audience’s willingness to accept something new. On the other hand, Mani Ratnam’s multi-starrer Chekka Chivantha Vaanam created huge hype and ensured good numbers at the box-office.

    Content is king
A significant development this year has been the absence of songs in successful films. Music is playing a marginal role, as opposed to early days that required superhit albums. The number of songs have also come down in films. With the rise of new talents like Govind Vasantha and Sam CS, films are more dependent on background score. Today, songs are used merely as a promotional tool than to attract repeat audiences.

Meanwhile, the rise of OTT platforms has changed filmmaking in Kollywood. In 2018, online platforms like Amazon Prime and Zee5 plunged into funding Tamil web series, which are all in a nascent stage. A lot of producers, including SR Prabhu and director Gautham Menon are in the process of venturing into web series that ensure more creative freedom (no censorship). One of the advantages of OTT platforms is that they allow film buffs to catch Tamil films legally on the Internet.

    Market pressure
Remake and dubbing rights have also boosted the Tamil film market in a big way. The success of Rajinikanth’s 2.0 in the Northern belt has created a new market for Tamil-dubbed films. In Telugu, dubbed films have ensured a minimum guarantee for certain stars. Now that the dubbing ban has been lifted in Kannada, a couple of Tamil films have found a market there too. The craze among Hindi channels for star-driven Tamil films has increased the rate of dubbed films. The biggest push in Kollywood has been the conversion of single screens into multiple screens, and the boom in multiplexes. The box-office collections have increased in urban centres like Chennai and Chengalpet, where other languages films have also found their way. In a nutshell, 2019 is going to be an exciting year for Tamil cinema. If we were to take a cue from 2018, then producers will need to bank on content-driven films in order to be successful at the box-office.

    Excerpts

When you see online trolls using your film’s trailer to abuse Pakistanis, Muslims and the opposition and praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi, how do you feel?
We are filmmakers who enjoy telling great stories. We don’t care where they come from. Fortunately for BJP, the surgical strikes happened during its tenure. If tomorrow someone tells me an incredible story that happened during the regime of Indira Gandhi, I would love to make it.

Would you say your film is jingoistic?
In a scene in the film, in the war room, an important character says that we are not enemies with Pakistani civilians. They are worse off than us. We are fighting terrorism.

That is the thought behind the film. I am a Kashmiri Pandit, and I have lived in both Kashmir and Delhi before migrating to Mumbai. I have seen how terrorism affects people. Till 1989-’90, Kashmir was on the verge of becoming India’s most successful state. Terrorism destroyed everything. My film is against that, not Pakistan.

The problem with Vicky is that he has incredible metabolism. He wouldn’t gain weight at all, and I needed him to play a 35/36-year-old army major. Rakesh Udiyar, who trained Aamir Khan in Dangal, prepared a plan for him. First, Vicky had to have three meals a day. Then, it went to four, then six, then seven. Each meal had 1.5 to two kgs of chicken, mutton and fish. Vicky would eat, work out, throw up, eat again. I feel what Vicky went through for the role should be part of acting courses.

Critically too it got mixed reviews and Shah Rukh Khan’s presence also did nothing to salvage the film at the box office. But looks like, SRK is already trying to move on from this setback. Reports suggest that he has pre poned the shoot of his next Saare Jahan Se Accha as he does not want to waste any time. According to inside sources, the shoot of the Rakesh Sharma biopic was to start after March but the sets are already being prepared in Film City and the movie will go on floors in February itself. In fact, it is touted that SRK has pre poned the second schedule too. While the first schedule is to be shot in Film City, second schedule is planned outdoors. There are no details on this one yet.

It is common knowledge that Aamir Khan was to do this film in the beginning but since he got busy with an ambitious Mahabharata project, he suggested that Shah Rukh Khan would be apt for this role. The film is being directed by Mahesh Mathai and is backed by Sidharth Roy Kapur. Since it is a space film, the budget for the same is humongous. King Khan doesn’t want to take any chance with the project.

  155. Box Office India Star Rankings Dec 2018 – Salman Khan Tops
    Thursday 03 January 2019 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The Box Office India Star rankings saw the first split of the Khans since 2012 when Ranbir Kapoor went up to second in July 2018 and in December there the split is bigger as Akshay Kumar goes into top four leaving Shahrukh Khan at number five. This is before the release of Zero as his older films lose points and there is nothing to cover those losses.

Aamir Khan went back above Ranbir Kapoor thanks to the huge opening of Thugs of Hindostan but how long this position can last is another matter as points of Dangal slowly go out of the rankings. There will be further changes as Zero and Simmba come into the picture in January.

The obituaries are being written for the Khans in the industry due to what happened in 2018 but they still remain the ruling stars though all three have seen their peaks. The scenario is a bit like Amitabh Bachchan in the late eighties and early nineties when Bachchan was not the same force as in the late seventies or early eighties but still the ruling star and by a distance. There was no challenge to Amitabh Bachchan and he ruled till the actually called it a day in 1992. The comeback came five years later but things had changed by then. What remains to be seen here is will the challenge come or are the Khans who are not at the level of super stardom of their peaks remain at the top and even this level of stardom is more than a match for others. Despite the talk, Salman Khan reigns supreme by a margin and the first signs of a real challenge will come when someone challenges for the top spot in this chart.

The rankings below are for India (August points in brackets) and completely based on opening box office numbers with holiday factors taken out and films which are technically guest roles or small releases left out. The criteria for the rankings below is here.

    1. Salman Khan: 2002 points (2380)

    2. Aamir Khan: 1185 points (765)

    3. Ranbir Kapoor: 844 points (832)

    4. Akshay Kumar: 675 points (468)

    5. Shahrukh Khan: 350 points (514)

    6. Ajay Devgn: 330 points (282)

    7. Ranveer Singh: 248 points (257)

    8. Varun Dhawan: 217 points (395)

    9. Tiger Shroff: 198 points (178)

    10. Hrithik Roshan: -143 points (-205)

There is always the credit factor and padding factor and our representation can be seen here which adjusts a little as to how much are the numbers are actually the doing of the actor. That representation can be seen here. This representation will be updated in Mid Jan

Perhaps the first time I’ve seen BOI shower such wholesome praise on BigB! BOI is seeing this much sense now only after the Khans have started hitting the same roadblocks which BigB hit after he turned 50.
Otherwise, back in 2005-10 they were hell bent on downgrading Amitabh’s stature, just so that they could elevate SRK to stratospheric heights. Fortunately for us, (and unfortunately for BOI and SRK fans), his trajectory completely stalled since 2006.

Salman is top, then Aamir. Akshay follows IMO followed by Ranbir and Ranveer though these 3 are very close. SRK is out of top 5 even though he can on any given day easily return but chances are low. Basically he can still open a film as big as Akshay, Ranbir and Ranveer but his terrible choices hit lifetime totals.

        • Hrithik is the extreme of what Aamir is. If you knock Aamir, Hrithik is even worse. But I think Hrithik will make a comeback in 19. With 2 releases and the Tiger showdown film he will definitely be back along with the calculator!

If Akshay can average 150Cr with 5 releases and bag a 30Cr opening he can get a silver medal. For Gold he needs some solid 25Cr+ openings and 1 300Cr film. 1 300Cr film when 4 stars have done it is not a big deal. Or 2 200Cr films! Heck 1 will do as he has none so far!

Ranveer’s going to deliver 1 300Cr and 1 200Cr with pretty much all the praise for himself. So he’s already in a similar place to Akshay accounting for less frequency but bigger openings and lifetime totals.

Three 150 Cr nett out of 5 will do for Akshay to remain at No 1, unless Salman deliver a huge Blockbuster.

Aamir with no releases and others performing better is not a good news for him.
If Gulkly boys is a super hit and Bharat is a Hit+, Aamir will be out of top 3 because of no release.

My ranking takes into account –

        Opening
        Overall success
        Frequency of releases
        Failures
Last 2-3 years successes / failures

All are needed for getting accurate star ranking. Else it will get skewed and will be unfair to upcoming stars or performance based stars.

My ranking considers that and hence has

      No 1 Akshay
      No 2 Aamir
      No 3 Salman
      No 4 Ranveer Singh
      No 5 Ranbir Kapoor

I have given fair reasoning as well which i believe is better than BOI’s.

      • One important aspect in ranking is that they are never absolute performances of the star. So this points next to star names are poor way to do.

Ranking = absolute performance + relative performance of other stars.

The relative performance of other stars are very important. Sometimes one can remain on top despite no release and other stars not doing well.
Similarly one can get knocked out if the star’s movie doesnt do well and other star’s movie performs better, though not a blockbuster, but overall more consistent successes.

  156. Akshay Kumar, the ‘one man industry’, targets record 2019 with five releases – Will he score over Rs 500 crore again?

    Moneycontrol Contributor
    @moneycontrolcom

Yet another year, yet another film festival expected from the ‘one man industry’, Akshay Kumar. Staying on to the most prolific of the superstars when it comes to multiple releases in a year, Akshay Kumar is looking at one of the most eventful years of the current decade with as many as five films set for released.

That’s right, in 2019 he would be seen in Kesari, Mission Mangal, Good News, Housefull 4 and Sooryavanshi. Interestingly, each of his five releases belongs to different genres altogether, hence lending quite some variety for the audiences. What has to be seen though is, how much business do these films bring in at the box office.

Let’s first take a look at the revenue that Akshay Kumar films have brought in the last few years.

2018 was superb as over Rs 600 crore came from just three releases. Between 2.0 [Rs 420 crore], Gold [Rs 105 crore] and PadMan [Rs 82 crore], as much as Rs 607 crore came in. One was a sci-fi affair, another was a sports drama and third was a social-health genre flick, each of which catered to distinct audience base. While 2.0 was a superhit in Hindi, Gold and PadMan made profits as well for its makers, hence ensuring a 100 percent success rate for those who had invested in it.

2017 was a relatively ‘slower’ year for Akshay Kumar as he had just two releases (less by his standards). Both films scored a century though. While Toilet – Ek Prem Katha [Rs 134 crore] broke his personal best of Rowdy Rathore [Rs 133 crore], Jolly LLB 2 [Rs 117 crore] did more than three times the business of its predecessor Jolly LLB [Rs 32 crore]. In total, Rs 251 crore came in.

2016 was a windfall year for him though where he turned out to be the first ever superstar in the current times to score a hat-trick of centuries. Airlift [Rs 129 crore], Rustom [Rs 128 crore] and Housefull 3 [Rs 109 crore] were all successes. While the first two were dramatic affairs, third in line was an out and out comedy. Between the three films, as much as Rs 366 crore were accumulated.

With as many as 8 releases in last 3 years, the sum total of Akshay Kumar grossers is a whopping Rs 1,224 crore has been collected. That makes it an average of Rs 155 crore per film. Of course, in this 2.0 is the biggest of them all as it by itself has brought in Rs 420 crore across all languages. Still, even if one keeps that aside, there is Rs 804 crore from 7 releases that makes it an average of around Rs 115 crore per release.

No wonder, even if looks at this minimum average per film, 2019 will be a record grossing year for Akshay Kumar, what with five of his films hitting the screens. With Rs 115 crore as a bare minimum average maintained for these films, we are looking at Rs 575 crore coming in at the least, which would be truly fantastic.

Of course expectations are that certain films would bring in a lot more moolah than this average. At least three of his Akshay Kumar’s five releases are exploring pan-India mass market that warrants much higher footfalls. These are Kesari, Housefull 4 and Sooryavanshi.

Kesari is based on a real life Battle of Saragarhi that was fought between 21 Sikhs and 10,000 Afghans back in 1897. The film is seeing a release around the Holi festival and is produced by Karan Johar no less. A magnum opus in the offering, this one is made for big screen entertainment and would be finding quite some eyeballs for itself.

Housefull 4 is the biggest offering the successful franchise by Sajid Nadiadwala. Each of the first three Housefull films has been successful and now with this Farhad Samji directed affair promising to get into the Baahubali zone due to its reincarnation theme, one expects Diwali 2019 to be really big and bountiful once the multi-starrer comedy hits the screens.

As for Sooryavanshi, the film’s announcement has come as a pleasant surprise, what with the Akshay Kumar and Rohit Shetty collaboration aiming for a Christmas release. Though an official announcement around the exact release date is yet to be made, rest assured the film would be huge once Akshay Kumar is seen in the role of a no-nonsense cop Veer Sooryavanshi.

As a one man industry, Akshay Kumar has ensured that his films make profits for all involved and bring in required entertainment for the audiences year after year. One just hopes that 2019 is no different when five of his releases hit the screens at a rapid pace and keep the box office bells ringing.

Decide how you want to play it carefully…till now 2.0 is a hit at 185Cr odd but by taking into account all regions you are declaring the #1 as someone who just delivered a big flop!

In a spaceflight first, China’s Chang’e-4 has landed where no spacecraft has touched down in one piece before: the far side of the moon.
If successful, the mission could answer fundamental questions about Earth’s only natural satellite. There are still mysteries, for example, about the moon’s formation and early evolution, which, in turn, hold clues to the history of the solar system.

Additionally, the mission will conduct the first radio astronomy experiments from the moon’s far side and the first investigations to see whether plants can grow on the moon — a crucial step toward long-term human missions beyond Earth.

    The moon has two sides

If you were to watch the moon over the course of a month, the “man in the moon” would never truly disappear. Despite the moon’s phases, he’s always there, keeping a watchful eye over you from his heavenly perch. That’s because the moon is tidally locked with Earth. It rotates exactly once every time it circles our planet, thus keeping the same hemisphere pointing toward Earth at all times.

Astronomers refer to the side we always see from Earth as the “near side” and the side we can never see as the “far side.”

It’s not really the “dark side”

    • One just cannot define why one likes one actor more than the other.
For some it is acting only.
For some it is star power.
For some it is personal liking.

I find Salman Khan endearing inspite of what others say.
I find Akki good inspite of his voice.
I like aamir as a person. It is a personal liking.
I like both Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan in certain kind of films.
      I like srk in songs.
Like Ranbir for no particular reason.

      There are others too.
