  4. Simmba had another solid hold on the last day of the week as the film collected 11.50 crore nett which took the film to a huge 150 crore nett plus total. It is the second highest first week after Sanju which grossed a huge 200 crore nett in week one. .

The film has done excellent business all over barring Tamil Nadu / Kerala which hardly matters. Bihar is a little low for this type of film but sill it has good collections in the circuit. The crucial areas were North India in the long run and those have sustained well from a pretty good start. Both Delhi / UP and East Punjab were doing as well as Mumbai post the holiday period. Maharashtra is extraordinary as Mumbai circuit has collected 55 crore nett apprx.

The key will be the Thursday – Friday drop and if it can hold really well then this film can even go to 250 crore nett plus.

  8. When prodded on whether avoiding the increase in promotional cost was the only reason for the preponement of Cheat India, the source continued, “Given the fact that Manikarnika is still in post-production with certain segments of VFX work still remaining to be done, it is certain that the release of the film will be deferred by a week or so. Now if the release of Manikarnika and Cheat India are delayed that would mean both clash at the box office. However, if the release of Cheat India is preponed, it ensures that the film receives an uncluttered and solo release.”

  15. Zero And KGF (Hindi) Second Week Business
    Friday 04 January 2019 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Zero had a huge drop of over 90% in the second week with collections of 6.25 crore nett. The total in two weeks is 88 crore nett and the film will close at around 90 crore nett. The film is a huge let down after Thugs of Hindoston. The biggest outright Hindi films ever made in terms of budget have failed badly at box office. The collections of Zero till date are as follows.

    Week One – 81,86,00,000

    Week two – 6,25,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 88,11,00,000 apprx

KGF (Hindi) had a decent week of 10.50 crore nett. The film was good in Maharashtra but got hit by the Simmba wave which is had extraordinary business in Maharashtra. Still KGF has managed to collect well enough. It has not broken out into other circuits but is a Mumbai circuit HIT due to the business in Maharashtra while other areas may not have much collections but its decent enough for this type of film which looks very South. The collections till date are as follows.

    Week One – 21,21,00,000

    Week Two – 10,50,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 31,71,00,000 apprx

The collections of this film on an all india basis is around 140 crore nett in two weeks.

    Friday 04 January 2019 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Simmba had an excellent first week with collections of over 150 crore nett. The film had a very good start in Maharashtra and was pretty good in other places but by Sunday it was excellent all over and since then it has sustained superbly all over. The collections post the holiday period are very strong.

The film has collected a huge 55 crore nett apprx in Mumbai and the Delhi / UP collections are 31 crore nett. It is the 11 th highest first week collection of all time and the second best of 2018 after Sanju. The trend in the first week confirms its SUPER HIT status unless it has a miraculous 60% plus drop on Friday which is not likely.

A very good result will be a 20-30% drop which will mean the film, will probably go and and become a BLOCKBUSTER film. The collections of Simmba till date are as follows.

    Friday – 20,50,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 23,75,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 31,00,00,000 apprx

    Monday – 21,50,00,000 apprx

    Tuesday – 28,00,00,000 apprx

    Wednesday – 14,00,00,000 apprx

    Thursday – 11,75,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 1,50,50,00,000 apprx

  17. Vidhu Vinod Chopra called Manisha Koirala a terrible actress before 1942 – A Love Story and here’s what happened!

By Bollywood Hungama News NetworkJan 4, 2019 – 1:46 pm IST
When we come across a biographical tale of an actor or actress, we come across many interesting, surprising and shocking anecdotes of their lives. One such anecdote that left many shocked was this! Manisha Koirala, who decided to reveal her courageous tale of her battle with cancer in Healed: How Cancer Gave Me A New Life, shared an incident when she not only got rejected for 1942 – A Love Story but also about how she was called a terrible actress by filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

Everyone would be aware that R D Burman composed chartbuster song ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ was picturized on Manisha Koirala and Anil Kapoor as the latter fondly describes her immense beauty and sweet nature in the lyrics. And probably, we can’t imagine anyone else playing her demure yet strong role in 1942 – A Love Story. But did you know she got rejected for it? In her book, Healed: How Cancer Gave Me A New Life, the actress revealed that when she gave her first audition for the film, director Vidhu Vinod Chopra dismissed it, adding that she was a terrible actress.

The actress took this rejection in the right spirit but did not give up! She requested the filmmaker for a second chance and asked for twenty four hours. The actress maintains in her book that the warrior princess in her was challenged and she was determined to do it. She stated that she rehearsed the lines again and again passionately until her mother was quite distressed seeing her in this state. And the next day she put up a performance that left Chopra stunned.

In fact, Vidhu Vinod Chopra went on to state that if this is the kind of heart and soul she would put in every scene of the film, he will replace Madhuri Dixit and sign her for the film. And that is exactly what happened.

As for 1942 – A Love Story, the film is a romantic drama set against the backdrop of social and political unrest during the pre-Independence era.

Most people think that poem and film song lyrics are the same, but that is a “complete fallacy”, Neeraj pointed out. “Firstly, the lyrics of a film song are not read before the public but are recited by characters on the screen. Secondly, film lyrics are often written to take the story of the film further. Thirdly, film lyrics are written for mass appeal rather than for the intelligentsia. And finally, film lyrics are written to fit into a ready-made musical tune. Many poets tried their hand at writing lyrics for films but few have succeeded.”

However, trade analyst Taran Adarsh in his tweet on Friday announced the project stating that Vivek Oberoi will be playing the role now.

The film’s unit is gearing up for the film’s first poster launch. The poster will be launched by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on January 7, in 23 languages.

A source close to the project told indianexpress.com, “Producer Sandip Ssingh and Vivek came up with the idea of roping in the Chief Minister for the unveiling. When the makers approached him, he readily agreed. The event is scheduled to take place at the Garware Club House in South Mumbai. Apart from Vivek’s look, the makers, it is expected, will also announce the release date.”

“The team acquired the necessary permissions to go forth with the film only a few weeks ago. Vivek has been working on his distinct looks, and will be part of extensive workshops. A big chunk of the film will be shot in Gujarat, apart from other states”, the source added.

The producer-director duo Sandip Ssingh and Omung Kumar are coming together yet again for this film after having worked on Sarbjit in the past. This biopic is said to narrate the journey of PM Narendra Modi from being a tea seller to his rise as the Prime Minister of the country. The film is expected to release this year itself, before the 2019 elections.

    • Saif Ali Khan plays the villain in Ajay Devgn starrer Taanaji

      BySubhash K. JhaJan 4, 2019 – 10:35 am IST

While Ajay Devgn will play the titular warrior (he produces the film) Saif will play the main antagonist. Confirming the casting coup Saif says, “Yes, I am playing the villain in this film. The crazy Udhayban Singh Rathore, Aurangzeb’s Rajput general.”

Ajay Devgn seems to have warmed up to Saif and his family in a big way. On Karan Johar’s talk show, Devgn was asked to name his favourite Khan, and he promptly named Saif’s son Taimur. When I tell Saif that Devgn has good taste, Saif agrees, “He does have good taste, no doubt.”

Simmba has emerged a BLOCKBUSTER and the third biggest HIT of 2018 as it has grossed a huge 9-9.50 crore nett apprx on Friday. The drop is just 20% from Thursday and now there is no stopping this film. Mumbai, Delhi / UP, Central India and East India are all excellent on the second Friday while South is not as good as the rest but still done good numbers.

The two bigger HITS of 2018 are Sanju and Padmaavat which means Ranveer Singh has two of the three biggest BLOCKBUSTERS of 2018 while Ranbir Kapoor has the biggest. Its the first time that the Khans are nowhere to be seen among the top films since 1992 but one point to note is that the three biggest HITS are also from the three biggest directors (Rajkumar Hirani, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Rohit Shetty) in the Hindi film industry today.

The eight day total is around 160 crore nett and it will be third highest grosser of 2018 within ten days as it will gross the 186 crore nett of 2.0 (Hindi) before the second weekend is out.

Both Sanju and Padmaavat were good films with pan India appeal, yet to watch Simmba (going for an evening show today), want to see what the hype is about.

I’ve enjoyed Rohit Shetty cinema though: he knows the pulse of the audience as well and dishes exactly what they want.

  27. Interesting as always Rahul.

I thin 2019 will also be a year where lot of small budget movies will be huge hits.

Adding few more exciting projects which can be HITS and even SuperHITS in 2019 as these are high concept movies with tightly controlled budgets:

    – URI,
    – Accidental Prime Minister,
    – Good news,
    – Mission Mangal,
    – De De Pyaar de,
    – Mental Hai Kya,
    – Shoot the Piano player,
    – Batla House,

Among the big budgets, I am more certain about the following riding on strong action/story/director/sequel

    – Kesari,
    – Manikarnika,
    – Hrithik/Tiger film,
    – Student of the years SOTY2,
    – Sooryavanshi,
    – Total Dhamaal,
    – Choti Si Baat Remake.

Among the big budgets, I am sceptical about
    – Housefull 4
    – Bharat,
    – Kalank,
    – Super 30,
    – Taanaji,
    – Brahmastra,
    – Saaho.
They are high budget potential time bombs riding mainly on superstar or based on boring concept. Can go either ways.

Interestingly not many sequels in 2019.

    • There are several epics/ historicals there: Kesari, Manikarnika, Bharat, Brahmastra, Kalank and Taanaji.

      Baahubali has set some trend!

Bharat, I feel may turn out to be either another Bajrangi Bhaijaan (if well made) or another Tubelight (if it turns out to be a dud). No middle ground there.

Brahmastra and Taanaji look very risky. The first seems to be a superhero film, with mythology thrown in. Ranbir has never delivered outside his comfort zone.

The second is a historical based on a character few people know about.

Films like Double Dhamaal and Housefull 4 look safer in comparison. These are films made to entertain and the predecessors in the series did just that.

What makes this year interesting is the fact that Hrithik has 2 films lined up. It’s a rarity.

    • If true, Aamir has gone nuts as his successes have always been the inventive scripts not the copies of Hollywood movies!! What’s there in FG which is novel or unknown or challenging?? Has he forgotten the extent of ridicule thrown at him for trying to ape POTC & Johnny Depp in TOH?? Still going ahead with such a bizarre step is nothing sort of committing harakiri as neither the success of that movie going to add anything in his oeuvre in terms of creativity nor the success would be his as FG is a well known classic worldwide!! If he can’t find an original script in this age of ‘content’, there’s something wrong with him and his current thought process which is not allowing him to let loose his creative instincts!! Going small is another choice where he could easily do 2 movies in a short span of time & then move on to big project, but this ‘formula to success’ thing has never been Aamir’s forte, never!!

He, of all folks, SHOULD know that PK, thematically, was actually an altered version of FG: Of a person whose emotions don’t fit the earthlings’ emotions!! It’s done and dusted..Move on! There’s really nothing new to add here..If there is, it has to be one PHENOMENAL script to over-take PK and FG…

I will bet it’s Netflix and Mahabharata…and that’s the best thing right now from all opportunities linked to him. I envy Akshay fans for the first time ever! He’s doing films.

Asking for a decent action flick or thriller is no big ask. Even TOH was wasted he could have done a sick film with Bachchan in the HEAT oeuvre. Or he can take advice from Ayushman Khurana!

He’s stuck between the box office records and China conundrum. I absolutely understand this predicament. Every film is expected to break lifetime records or do something in China…this balancing act is not easy. He’s better of just producing small films IMO.

The first half belongs to Bachchan. He gave a beautiful performance as the aged but determined freedom fighter or thug. He remained me of so many of his roles.
Aamir was brilliant but I could not buy his villainy.
Katrina was sex appeal personified and cracked her limited role.
Fatima’s role was not well written and she could not do much with such a role.
Ayyub was funny. Ronit Roy was good.

        • There wasn’t much wrong with the first half at all. In fact, is far better than average: with odd spots like Aamir’s wig, beard, et. al.

It was very racy in the first half, the action scenes were shot very, very well and I have no complaints. The second half was where the problems lie..So no, just placing Murugadoss or Rohit Shetty as directors is not the solution; maybe they would have done a slightly better job — but nothing more.

We are giving un-necessarily high credits to these directors, as though they are masters. If money talks, yes, they might be the kings, but if cinema talks, in my books — however outdated — they are NOT.

Just look at how ‘sane’ folks are reacting to SIMBAA’ second-half. It throws open the debate as to whether RS really understand the masala of Desai universe…

I’m actually quite surprised at some of the positive reviews for Simmba which imo is a run of the mill pointless masala film that neither has the charming spark of a Dabangg (the best among the lot) and nor does it have the whistle worthy antics of Singham (barring Ajay/Singham’s entry scene itself!).

      • Content isn’t just story or plot though. Content is also a term that includes cinematography, sound and presentation. It’s the overall combination that can be categorized as good or bad. A film may have a great script but may falter in terms of presentation. The opposite is also true — a film with an average script could entice viewers just based on its presentation.

The fact that Race 3, ToH and Zero failed but films like Stree, Badhai Ho and Andhadhun succeeded gives an indication of what the paying public prefers, in terms of content. Stree and Badhai Ho made as much money as ToH and Race 3, forget Zero.

Also, I don’t buy the idea of sustained negativity clouding the public mind. SRK fans trended the Zero hashtag for an entire week and nothing came of it. People are not that easily fooled. The real WoM is reflected in the actual box office collections.

Completely agreed: And that’s why I said, in terms of the way TOH was shot and depicted in the first half, it was tonally and totally true to what it was attempting. A complete tribute to the masala universe, and with Bachchan reigning in the first half, it succeed quite well; because the actor and this universe gel quite well and that’s a historical fact!

Only in the 2nd half does it falter; because somewhere, logic and magic coincide and it’s not an easy altercation. That, according to me, is the MAIN reason for it’s failure.

The failure to marry Aamir’s logic and Amitabh’s magic..It should have stuck to one tone..

        • Masala was never about content. It was always about how the story and character wrings out the emotions outta the audience. Logic be damned.
The ‘change-in-heart hero’ trope of the Masala genre needs the deep profundity of the ‘awakening event’, followed by change in the character’s arc, the redemption of said character and the resulting catharsis in the audience.
In TOH, the profundity was amply provided in the first half that culminated with BigB’s suicide mission. But the subsequent Firangi character arc change and redemption was badly mishandled, and probably led to non-existent audience catharsis. Aamir willingly discarded his logical mind and went along with the notion of audience’s suspended disbelief. Perhaps, not having been part of this genre for two decades, he just did not foresee this lack of audience catharsis. Perhaps he oughtta not have trusted it entirely in the hands of Acharya and YRF.

OTOH, RS seems to understand and excel in these tropes. I recall an interview of Mithundada before Golmaal3, in which he claimed that RS is the best of the current crop in reading the audience pulse and dishing out exactly what they want. So no surprise to see RS deliver 100cr grossers one after the other.

        • Agree with Saket on defn of ‘content’. Not being dismissive.

Also, in TOH, the profundity was obvious to those heavily invested in the BigB persona. Since there are very few such BigB fans, this did not ensnare the larger audience and created a vacuum from the get go.

A person who pretended to be blind had to lose eyesight. They say dont be too smart.
The father who went for a too young woman met death as a sort of warning to the others.
Watching Manto. Great movie. It is quite entertaining as well. Why did it fail at the bo? Dumb audience who can make dumb films blockbusters.
Badhaai ho is nothing in front of Andhadhun or Manto. Ayushman also looked dashing and gave the best performance while Radhika sparkled. Tabu as usual gave a nice performance but I feel that she is being slotted in greyish roles quite regularly. Tabu is creepily pretty.
Now I know why Nawaz was selected to play Thackerey. He looks uncannily like him.
Unfortunately Stree is on Jio and not on netflix or Prime as of now. So I will wait for it.
Black Mirror is funny and engrossing.

  33. Caught Simmba at a theater yesterday. Must say that Ranveer’s comic timing is pure Gold. First half entirely belongs to him, and I can see why/how this movie has worked bigtime at the BO. Wud be very interested to find out if a lot of his lines/comebacks were from prepared dialog or extempore, coz a lot of it looks so spontaneous and vintage Ranveer. The role and the personality seem to have just merged into one.
However I found the second half dragging and too loud with all the cacophony of “Police” and “Singham” blaring constantly in BGM.

That being said, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, had TOH been in the hands of a director even half as good as Rohit Shetty, the result wouldve been very diff. The character arcs of Bhalerao and Firangi are exactly the same, ie both corrupt dudes faced with a rude awakening. However, RS displays exactly how it is done in a tight masala genre. Perhaps even Aamir had lost all understanding of masala to have rendered any help in the making of TOH.

    • Agreed, NyKavi. Ranveer is a hoot in the first half. Quite effective in the second as well. He is the show.

But I’d say this about Shetty: his sense of generating a spectacle through choreographed action is quite poor. I didn’t feel any thrill at all watching all those action scenes. This is where the South Indian industry excels — one can see the quality in KGF’s trailers, for instance. They know how to generate a ‘heroic spectacle’ on screen.

Had the action scenes been of better quality, I think Simmba might have done even better. There’s a reason why KGF has increased its screen count in Week 3, despite being a dubbed film. The reason being, one, people are starved of good quality masala. And two, they want an upgrade from the current Bollywood version, which is quite outdated at the mo.

      • Agreed that RS action scenes have become too repetitive. Same ole aerial white jeeps amidst small town streets and hero beating up rotund goons; and the annoying BGM blaring. Most of this was was in the second half and thats what made it all drag.
He needs to infuse some innovation into action. Maybe learn some tricks from the Jason Bourne or Mission Impossible movies.
Fortunately for him, Ranveer hits it outta the ballpark here, and has connected bigtime with audiences.

This has always been the stance Aamir taken regardless of failure or success of his movies, giving credit to the writers & the directors behind the success of his movies even when he was delivering hits as a producer in Peepli Live! & JTYJN; he doesn’t change his thoughts based on success or failure but remain consistent throughout his career.

  39. Forrest Gump is tremendous material. It is an all-time classic.

The performance from Hanks, the direction by Zemeckis, the soundtrack, the special effects and the cinematography are all really awesome.

I watched it in a theatre when it released and it remains one of the finest moments if cinema I have experienced in my lifetime.

I guess Aamir will work with the basic premises and adapt it to rhe context of Indian history. This is a bit what the makers of Bharat probably had to do. Incidentally, Ode to My Father is often hailed as the Korean Forrest Gump!

I don’t think it will end up being similar because there will be so many things to change for the audience in India to adapt to it.

The only draw-back would be comparisons with the original. Matching FG in terms of quality would be a big ask. Advait Chandan is hardly Bob Zemeckis.

And just listen to the suite by Alan Silvestri. Some of the tracks are just awesome.

But I expect Aamir to do a good job while adapting it. He has probably been fascinated by the film since several years and I guess he has been working in it since a long time. He can do justice to it.

    • I agree here with Rahul. The content is tremendous and is likely to be adapted to suit Indian history and imageries. The moment you make a movie because you are superstar, you are likely to be doomed. Aamir is not following this part. Salman too is not with Bharath.

I don’t think he will do that. A FG remake cannot be mounted on a small scale. There have to be fantastic visuals. There will be war scenes for sure, need for good VFX and sets to create previous eras.

It cannot be a SS kind of deal filmed within interiors of a room.

I hope Aamir goes all out as he did with Lagaan and create something really special.

  46. Rajinikanth’s Petta, Ajith’s Viswasam compete for 1000 screens in Tamil Nadu ahead of Pongal release

Pongal 2019 is going to be special as Rajinikanth’s new film Petta clashes with Ajith Kumar-starrer Viswasam, as both have announced a 10 January release. The Pongal releases are trending on social media and are more talked about than the Tiruvarur by-election in the star-crazy Tamil Nadu. G Dhananjayan, Tamil film producer and historian, said, “If Rajinikanth is the big Tamil global superstar with phenomenal reach, there is a huge craze for Ajith and Vijay in Tamil Nadu, where they are known as kings of opening.”

Petta is facing stiff opposition from Viswasam in the race to get maximum screens in Tamil Nadu. For the first time in 13 years, another star film is releasing along with a Rajinikanth film on the same day. Pongal can easily accommodate two or three films but when two big hero films clash, the screens get divided.

Petta has Rajinikanth teaming up with young director Karthik Subbaraj, and has a multi-star cast comprising of Vijay Sethupathi, Sasikumar, Bobby Simhaa, Simran, Trisha and Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui. It is produced by Sun Pictures. Viswasam also has Nayanthara and top comedian Yogi Babu, with Jagapathi Babu playing the villain. It is produced by one of the oldest companies, Sathya Jyothi Films. Both the films from the trailers, are clearly mass entertainers, targeting the fan base of the actors.

There are around 1000 screens in Tamil Nadu, which will get split between the two films. Rajinikanth’s 2018 films — Kaala and 2.0 — released in around 700 to 750 screens in Tamil Nadu and got all four shows, which helped the film to get a record opening. Ajith’s last film Vivegam too got a solo release in 600 plus screens. Now, the 1000 odd screens will get divided between Petta and Viswasam, with multiplexes in the 3Cs — Chennai City, Chengalpet and Coimbatore — giving equal shows to both films. But outside of the urban 3Cs in south Tamil Nadu, single screens call the shots. As of now, screens have to be shared between the two.

Rakesh Gowthaman of Vettri Theatre in Chrompet, a suburb of Chennai, said, “Two big films, Thalaivar’s Petta and Thala’s Viswasam, are releasing on the same day, and will eat into each other’s collection. There should have been a few days’ differences between the two releases as normally, a Superstar film gets a solo release. Now, I will be playing two shows each of Petta and Viswasam per day in my big screen, and the fifth Pongal special show will be given to the film which has maximum online booking. The opening will definitely get split down the middle.”

“We will shoot all over India – Mumbai, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.”

Oberoi will be “playing a man who has rebuilt an entire nation in five years”, the anchor said at the event.

The year 2017 saw the film Modi Ka Gaon, starring the prime minister’s lookalike Vikas Mahante as a character named Nagendra. Released on December 29, 2017, two weeks after the Gujarat Assembly elections, the film celebrated the Modi government’s policies. Modi Ka Gaon was written and produced by BJP member CA Suresh Jha.

This is the second biopic to be made on Modi. In 2018, actor and BJP Member of Parliament Paresh Rawal had announced that he would be producing and starring in a film about the prime minister. “Let me assure you nobody else can pull off Narendra Modi’s role,” Rawal told India Today. However, there has been no further news on the project, which was supposed to have gone into production in September 2018.

Chennai Express Wasn’t A Shah Rukh Khan Film; Deepika Padukone Got The Maximum Credit: Rohit Shetty
Back in 2015, Rohit and SRK had faced some creative differences during the filming of Dilwale, thus hampering the output of the film.

        • SRK who made so many careers starting now holds the distinction of effectively killing careers of a lot directors in the recent past and in hindsight they would be better off with their gradual upward trajectory if not for a SRK movie….Maneesh Sharma, Imtiaz , Gauri Shinde, Dholakia to name a few young talent. Rohit Shetty recovered quick with Golmaal Again and I hope so does Anand Rai who was doing so well until now.…
Zero which could have been a small little endearing story seemed unnecessarily hijacked by all the gizmos. There are these unwarranted sets / bloated production values / money splurged aspect which is repulsive to watch as all that appears forced…. Rohit Shetty is right about casting a SRK in a movie now as to how he makes a watermelon out of an ‘Angoor’….His last few movies like Fan / Raees / JHMS etc may have been good on paper starting out but lost the essence and went haywire while filming.

Going forward he will need to give us a perfect / unblemished story to have any trust in his choices….in CDI zone. Zero is a disaster from the get go and not even a single scene/ moment standing out in the grand scheme of story telling. Even the song which initially pulled me to the theater ‘Mera Naam Tu’ got marred by the explanations done at the end of the song and breaking down the cost for audiencce…….. as if they never took cinematic liberties anywhere else in the movie ….

Shah Rukh midlife crisis doesn’t seem to be ending and he is not leveling up and maturing on screen. His interviews are far from what he actually goes onto practice and the sham is easily visible on screen. He wants both worlds and ends up with neither, just shallow self-indulgent characters, like in his movies Fan and Zero.
He could have made memorable movies even now as I feel SRK is a better actor than Aamir in every type of acting, not only romance but overindulgence simply kills the characters and cohesion / consistence / continuity takes a toss.

  54. Box Office: Understanding the economics of Thugs of Hindostan and the profits for Aamir Khan

Made on a budget of Rs. 240 cr (Cost of Production Rs. 220 cr + Print & Publicity Rs. 20 cr) Thugs of Hindostan is one of the costliest Bollywood ventures in recent times. Going into the release of the film, its makers was hard pressed to recover investments before it hit screens, hence the immense promotional campaign was employed to maximise earnings. Given the marketing and wide release pattern the film started off on a high note, but with less than appreciative reviews the business of Thugs of Hindostan witnessed a drop. With box office earnings pegged at Rs. 151.19 cr, from which YRF earned Rs. 76 cr, and another Rs. 30 cr from the overseas markets the makers of Thugs of Hindostan stand to earn Rs. 106 cr.

However, with the distribution rights of the film within the Chinese market being sold for a MG of Rs. 110 cr, coupled with another Rs. 140 cr coming in from the sale of the film’s Satellite and Digital Rights, Rs. 10 cr from the sale of Music Rights and Home Video and Rs. 5 cr from other Ancillary rights, Yash Raj Films rakes in a stunning Rs. 371 cr. Juxta positioning the expenses of making the film at Rs. 240 cr against the earning the makers of Thugs of Hindostan still stand to make a profit of Rs. 131 cr with a 54.58% rate of Return on Investment (RoI).

Interestingly though, like Dangal, Aamir Khan stands to make the biggest share in terms of profit. While Khan earned a whopping Rs. 200-210 cr post the success of Dangal, post the release of Thugs of Hindostan, Aamir Khan stands to earn Rs. 65.50 cr especially since Aamir and Yash Raj Films entered into a 50-50 profit sharing agreement prior to the film’s release.

    Economics of Thugs of Hindostan
    Cost Of Production (A) – 220 Cr.

    Cost Of Prints/Marketing (P&A) (B) – 20 Cr.

    TOTAL COST (A+B)– 240 Cr.

India Theatrical Box Office – 151.19 Cr. (Expected)

    Distributor’s share (A) – 76 Cr.

Overseas Theatrical Box Office – 62.75 Cr.

    Distributor’s share (B) – 30 Cr.

    MG for China market ( C) – 110 Cr.

    Satellite Rights and Digital ( D) – 140 Cr.

Music Rights and Home Video (E) – 10 Cr.

    Ancillary Revenues (F) – 5 Cr.

    TOTAL RECOVERIES (A+B+C+D+E+F) – 371 Cr.

    PROFIT – 131 Cr.

RETURN ON INVESTMENT (ROI) – 54.58%

  58. Simmba Collects Very Well On Second Monday
    Tuesday 08 January 2018 13.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Simmba collected very well on its second Monday with around 6 crore nett coming. Only seven films in 2018 managed to collect this much or more on the first Monday. This takes the film to 196 crore nett and it will become the 14th film to cross 200 crore nett today (Tuesday).

The film already has 46 crore nett in the second week and could finish the week with a total over 60 crore nett but that depends on the holds over the next three days. There are two Hindi films for competition this week and though neither look big openers they will take screens space from Simmba at multiplexes.

The fourteen day business will be better than Padmaavat but it will be less over two weeks as Padmaavat had an extended first week of eight days plus paid previews. The collections of Simmba till date are as follows.

    Week One- 1,50,26,00,000

    Friday – 9,25,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 13,25,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 17,50,00,000 apprx

    Monday – 6,00,00,000 apprx

    Second Week – 46,00,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 1,96,26,00,000 apprx

Simmba will become the highest NETT grosser of Rohit Shetty film by the end of week two by beating Golmaal Again and Chennai Express but has a long way to go to beat the footfalls of Chennai Express.

Cancer cases are increasing amongst filmi people and most of them are able to survive. Wish them and others also luck!

Bachchan and Khans are eternal reference points. Deal with it.

The most interesting growing career graph belongs to none other than akki.

Others have to prove themselves more.

About number ones. They have to defend their position. There are others waiting to upstage them. Every new release is like an election.

    • Interesting resolutions Sanjana….

@”About number ones. They have to defend their position. There are others waiting to upstage them…”

10-12 years after being launched in the industry, it can now be confirmed both Ranbir & Ranveer have somewhat established themselves beyond the usual mumbo jumbo and have come into their own in 2018. Depending on the complete packaging they may even be in a position to demand solo release going forward something which is reserved for the top guns. It would be interesting how much is old guard willing to budge or confront to this new onslaught since age is a factor for them now….. unlike the previous face off where time permitted readjustments to reaffirm supremacy. Akki & Ajay faced bigger lows and that too 2-3 times in their careers before bouncing back so why can’t we allow the same to Khan trio and give them a chance as they have been in the biz for long and know the inner workings.

On an aside, the current dynamics aren’t that simplistic to deduce as the newer lot is into very limited volume hence exposing their frailties instantly is difficult. Most are now into niche stuff which comes with a risk of making or breaking them…. 2018 being the one which paid them off handsomely. They are also being assisted by shortage of relatable faces and supply side of male actors remains restricted due to lack of incoming talent and a bit of nepotistic control helping the ‘still’ called newer lot to sustain for so long even after so many disasters & failures of the past.

On Khan trio, the current slump is a long overdue and pat of the market correction which newer lot had been failing to capitalize until recently. There is clearly an audience fatigue and changing demographics wrt to ‘anything goes’ being dished out by them The age barrier seems to have put them in a catch 22 bind – to make hay exiting out or take the risk of working anew and bring something fresh to the table. Complacency and playing God to people is not working anymore except for making some fat moolah capitalizing on past laurels …in other words there is no room for thrusting a Race 3 anymore.

On overthrow and elimination of the trio if one were to dig deeper none of the newer lot on paper is as accomplished / gifted the way say a Hrithik was when he came…….and we ‘now’ know his current standing ….. so once center stage is taken with the performance/ delivery sword hanging their head the actual countdown begins. They continue to be pumped by the new age social media but these things get settled more with time than any of these debates on blog…..

      • Actor Shah Rukh Khan’s latest movie Zero may have not fared well at the box office but the actor is still all for spending great amounts of money on his movies. In an interview to Deccan Chronicle, the actor compared his films with his daughter and said he has all the rights to spend money on his films.

“I believe every film I do is like my daughter. People spend lavishly on their daughter’s wedding, so why can’t I spend on my film? Let whatever I am doing for my daughter, be nice, and inshallah, the money will follow,” he said. Zero was made on a budget of around Rs 200 crore but struggled to make even half that amount at the box office.

However, he knows that experimenting with his film choices makes him the true king of Bollywood. “I have succeeded with things that I never knew would succeed. I also feel that if you really are the king, you should have the choice to make your own choices. A king without choices is not a king at all.” The actor-producer says that even his company keeps telling him that he is overdoing things but he knows that no one can stop him from making key decisions.

    • I think Ranveer is ahead of Ranbir now. Ranbir got huge hit in Sanju but his future movies are still not top of the creme. All big film makers are running for Ranveer. You have Bhansali, Rohit Shetty, Zoya Akhtar, Kabir Khan, Karan Johar (Takht) etc whereas Ranbir has another expensive risk in Brahmastra (part 1 which will have 2 more sequels) and then Karan Malhotra’s Shamshera (who made last Brothers in 2015) with that Vaani Kapoor who played the male lead opp Ranveer Singh in Befikre!

      Like

      • Saket’s laid out the convincing debate FOR Ranveer for sure. I’m still convinced Ranbir is a better actor overall but Ranveer is an all rounder right now and 3 years younger so a better bet. Plus he’s delivered 2 big hits in 12 months.

Ranbir’s line up looks risky and I think his films might suffer like Bombay Velvet and JJ.

I’ll mention Varun who is still in the mix. October and Sui Daaga didn’t flop – they did ok enough so he’s still in the conversation – they weren’t exactly mass, big productions either!

Tiger at 28 is still work in progress.

My personal favourite is Ayushman as he is doing some nice films. And he has what 4 releases in 2019? I’ll be watching all hopefully! Another busy year as the old guard are a little boring right now.

It’s not even as if one WANTS them to stay at the top indefinitely. It’s basically about films and if they do good ones then they get their, whoever it is. This vendetta of sorts is really comical IMO. Aamir has ONE flop and conveniently marketed in with SRK who’s had a disastrous run for years! Salman’s had 2 out of 3 disasters and he’s hardly setting the box office on fire with memorable cinema!

Seems the PR of certain actors is working overdrive to create something out of nothing!

    • That is what I was saying that Ranbir had a spate of disasters and one Sanju cant make him number one. And Ranveer had also his share of flops. Inspite of getting good vfx and good reviews 2.0 could not cross 200 cr. easily.
Ranveer’s success streak looks like fluke unless his other films also do blockbuster businesses in a row with a few misses as a fair concession. At the most he may become another Akshay Kumar in course of time. At present number one slot looks shaky unless Bharat does great business.

It’s a joke that the 2 are compared here…only someone blinded can’t see that! But happy for Aamir to ‘carry’ SRK…if Aamir scores, SRK can count it as his hit! We’ll give it to you… we are charitable fans. Aamir gave BB to Salman and now he’s ‘saluting’ SRK! He’s very charitable…

You don’t gift a Lagaan LOL. SRK would have had the entire industry as opponents instead of British and probably some attention seeking victory song with his friends like Om Shanti Om. Thank god for small mercies like SRK not getting Lagaan or MBBS!

Thank god Aamir didn’t say YES to Darr! Fate is fortunate to some and SRK made hay for himself in the KJo, YRF era for himself but now it’s crystal clear who is absolutely desperate for a hit of ANY kind.

Fresh from the success of Raajneeti, Prakash Jha has now decided he wants to make a film with Angelina Jolie as Draupadi.

Jha had been planning a film concentrating on Draupadi’s tale in the Mahabharata for quite a while now, and had even wanted to cast Madhuri Dixit as Draupadi. But he wasn’t sure if it was the right time. Now, post Raajneeti, Jha has decided to make the film, but it will now be for an international audience. He wants to rope in an international star cast for it, and his first choice for the main role is none other than Angelina Jolie.

If Angelina agrees to do the film, she will be giving tough competition to Bipasha Basu. Bips is reportedly playing Draupadi in Rituparno Ghosh’s eponymous film.

  79. 2018 Has High Number Of Blockbusters
    Wednesday 09 January 2019 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

There were six Blockbuster films in 2018 and this is a sort of record in recent history. If we take the last four decades since 1980 then there have been six Blockbusters in a year on two occasions but never seven so 2018 is sort of a record in terms of the number of Blockbusters.

The year itself is a so so one with meager growth in business for Hindi films in terms of GROSS business. There is some decent growth in terms of NETT but that is basically because of a different tax rate in the first six months of 2017. The like for like growth has to be judged in terms of GROSS and its pretty poor with limited increase in business and a big decline in footfalls. Despite this the Blockbusters came though a couple are due to the budgets and not Blockbuster films from the audience point of view due to the limited reach.

The other years to see 6 blockbuster films in a year since 1980 were 1981 and 1983. Below are the years and films which managed six blockbusters in a year.

    2018
    1. Sanju

    2. Padmaavat

    3. Simmba

    4. Baaghi 2

    5. Badhaai Ho

    6. Stree

    1983
    1. Coolie

    2. Betaab

    3. Hero

    4. Andhaa Kanoon

    5. Himmatwala

    6. Avtar

    1981
    1. Kranti

    2. Laawaaris

    3. Naseeb

    4. Ek Duje Ke Liye

    5. Love Story

    6. Meri Aawaz Suno

The difference between 2018 and the other two years is that the Blockbusters of 1983 and 1981 were far bigger with the top two of 1983 and 1981 probably having as many footfalls of all six films in 2018.

With noteworthy performances in films like Sanju, Raazi, and Masaan, Kaushal has slowly yet steadily built up an ardent fan following. This time too Vicky doesn’t disappoint as his performance in URI is spot on. His mannerisms as an officer from the armed forces who is solely focussed on one goal are bang on. His bravado performance and rigorous training to get into the role reflects on screen. Yami Gautam as Pallavi/Jasmine is severely underutilized as a special agent. Similarly, Kirti Kulhari as Seerat Kaur too is slotted in a minimalistic role. Paresh Rawal as Govind Bhardwaj, Mohit Raina as Major Karan Kashyap, Yogesh Soman as Ravinder Agnihotri, and Rajit Kapur as PM Narendra Modi have done well in their given roles. Though a special mention needs to be made for Raina who has done an exceptional job! On the other hand, Paresh Rawal’s character is repeatedly shown breaking cell phones, unfortunately the context and reason why is never shown.

Dhadak had the top premiere on television in 2018 though the year was dominated by Tiger Zinda Hai, Golmaal Again and Baaghi 2 which have has continued to rate very highly post the premiere. These films have alll crossed 5 crore impressions in 6-7 viewings and are films having a great innings post the theatrical release.

These three films were the huge BLOCKBUSTER on television while Dhadak and Stree were SUPERHIT and all the others on the list were HIT barring Padmaavat, Gold and Raazi. Box Office India Trade Network

Simmba had its first noticeable fall on its second Wednesday as collections fell 15-20% from the day before. The film collected around 4.75-5 crore nett and this is still a good number for the second Wednesday but the 250 crore nett mark may be tougher to reach now. Also the drop is mainly noticeable as the film has held up so well till now, for others this can be normal drop.

The film has collected around 207 crore nett till date and the second week will be around 60 crore nett plus. It will be a total of over 210 crore nett in two weeks but the third Friday could see a drop in collections due to the release of two films. Uri is an action film but is unlikely to make much off a mark in Maharashtra and Gujarat where Simmba is super strong but multiplexes in big cities will see a fall as screens get divided.

There is Accidental Prime Minister also which does not the type to have a first day audience but it has been involved in a controversy so could get eyeballs because of that. The collections of Simmba till date are as follows.

    TOTAL – 2,06,76,00,000 apprx

When Ranveer was asked about it in an interview with PinkVilla, he spilled the beans saying that everyone was discussing at the bash that DP has arrived as ‘Laxmi’ in their lives post-marriage with Ranveer and hence, they all decided to seek blessings from her.

Interesting to note a high grossing commercial Padmaavat performing even lower than Parmanu and Sui Dhaaga on Satellite TV despite doing >15x its day 1 business at theatres at the time of release. Perhaps digital TV influence on reducing satellite viewership is increasing by the day and satellite TV numbers are no yardstick for popularity anymore.

Petta feels like a true tribute to Rajniisms — his cool glass flip, the cigarette flip, his look, his laugh and the title card that embodies all of this. The fans will go home happy.

So this should help the perception battle. Now Bollywood has been tamed enough in the last 4 years hence willing to oblige at any given opportunity.

        So all seems well now!

      • Rocky recently back to U.S after a month long trip to India….this was mostly Delhi and the surrounding Northern belt. Coincidentally this trip was after 4 – 4.5 years which is approx the period of BJP rule in India. Sadly never been more disappointed in our nation’s story than ever and a State without proper leadership and guiding hand means anarchy. This was least expected result as most Indians had opted for a stable, strong and decisive govt in 2014. Focus wasn’t on just wealth creation but most opted for cleaner set up where law & order / rules & regulations would take precedence over anything else. More so after the misrule of Congress in the last few years of their rule prior being booted out and mess created by Mulayam and gang.

It isn’t just a political mess but socially, economically and culturally we have gotten worse than before. Modi seems to have lost all the political capital and with that a golden opportunity to transform the nation into something magical we were all expecting…. Things are in the red and even if we were to disregard the economic quandary, general public is fed up of both Modi & Yogi (a complete dumb fuck) who has made UP into a even a bigger mess.

In my opinion India will be ‘extremely’ lucky if Congress / Rahul come back to power so at least the educated forward looking India can get back on track and somewhat on an upward trajectory like before…. Rahul after all the dumbness now seems cleaner than a highly biased and somewhat cronyistic Modi. The political catchphrase ‘Chowkidaar chor hai” is reverberating with many and seems apt for the guy…he has completely lost my respect and he seems to be a crook in the Turkish Erdogan mould….just milking people emoithons. I was privy to some inner working in the Delhi circle and Modi has given crony capitalism a new meaning. Another revelation which I never imagined (like all other gullible / naive NRIs) were doubts on his personal integrity / character etc…
Now he may be driven by over zealous Hindutva nationalistic agenda (nothing wrong with that and about time someone bothered to what majority were feeling ) but the guy seems to be a corrupt and may I say even a ‘thurki’ with a harem of women. Smirti Irani escapades are an open book within the Delhi political corridors .….will talk on this later and closer to election time ….

  95. Mani Ratnam, who has been focusing on varied genres of late, seems to have found his next script in a period drama of the Chola Empire era. According to recent reports, the filmmaker is keen on making a film on the book Ponniyin Selvan, written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The book, however, is a five volume series based on Chola King Rajaraja Chola I, his journey of being Arulmozhivarman to the king. These reports have it that Mani is keen on making it a franchise of sorts and not surprisingly, they are keen on making it as grand as the Bahubali franchise.

As per these reports, the filmmaker is also keen on getting many bigwigs from the South industry on board for the film. However, names of them haven’t been revealed as yet. As for the involvement of Bollywood, the only name that has come in reports, besides Aishwarya, is that of Amitabh Bachchan. If he gives the nod, this will be a good onscreen reunion of Aishwarya and her father-in-law after a gap of over a decade. The two actors were last seen in Sarkar Raj.

Based on the 10th and 11th century, the film is expected to have several parts and it seems that Mani Ratnam is keen on asking the cast members to give dates in bulk and to dedicate a couple of years for the film. Reports state that an announcement regarding the film will be made during Pongal [January 14-15] next week.

But we’d say Singh has nothing to worry about because the movie more or less portrays him as he is widely perceived – naïve, at times bewildered by the political shenanigans of his colleagues, but always earnest – a man thrust into a position of power, that he never aspired for. The Accidental Prime Minister, in fact, takes great pains to portray Singh akin to Bhishma from the Mahabharata, as the wise old man with no evil, who is only beset by family drama. Could this be termed whitewashing? Is Manmohan Singh getting off lightly for the misdoings of his party, and for the fact that despite being the prime minister, he had absolutely no control over his people and let himself be used as a puppet by the high command? Though Baru at one point refers to Singh as “spineless”, ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ showcases him as a morally upright ‘politician’, not a leader though, with a good sense of humour; a technocrat whose sole focus was the welfare of his country.

Does the Congress have to worry about the portrayal of the Gandhi family in the movie? There are no shock revelations about the Congress party or the Gandhi family in the film, whether it be Sonia Gandhi’s (played by German actress Suzanne Bernert who bears an uncanny, though slightly waxen, resemblance to Mrs Gandhi) behind-the-scenes attempts to promote her son as a prime ministerial candidate, or Rahul Gandhi’s act of tearing up a government ordinance during a press conference (though in real life he only spoke about tearing up the document). The intersplicing of the ‘fictional’ movie with actual footage of political rallies and speeches by politicians, tends to jar a bit. When you are paying someone to play Rahul Gandhi (Arjun Mathur) on screen, why bother to show footage of the actual Gandhi scion at a political rally?

The true hero of the movie turns out to be Baru, played with affable charm by the talented Akshaye Khanna and the movie’s narrative style of having him talk directly to the audience (perhaps borrowed from ‘House of Cards’?) works well. He brings levity to the movie and eventually ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ holds you in its sway cause of Khanna’s charisma.

Our only grouse would be that the movie might be a bit tedious for those with no political know-how of the goings on in the Congress party. But that should not stop you from watching the movie. In fact, every Indian should watch the movie, if only to find out how the game of politics is played within the four walls of a constitutional institution and as Baru cheekily comments at the beginning of the movie, ‘how the fate of a country of a billion people is decided by a handful of people’. Kudos to Gutte for making a mark with his directorial debut, and keeping it to a watchable one hour and 45 minutes and to Kher in particular for the tremendous physical transformation he has undergone to play the role of a lifetime. In the hands of a lesser actor, it would have looked absurd.

Two very strong performances make #AccidentalPrimeMinister a must see film. Akshaye Khanna and Anupam Kher. Anupam creates Manmohan Singh as a man who seems weak but carries great strength inside. Yet ultimately finds that principles and politics do not go together @AnupamPKher

What @AnupamPKher has done in playing Manmohan Singh in #AccidentalPM is to create something that could easily have become a caricature, into a breathing relatable human being that you want to reach out to and hug. That takes a lot of skill.

The producers have decided to hold the film back to give it a more definitive and comprehensive look and a more complete overview of the protagonist’s life story. Says a source close to the producer, “They are likely to shoot further, add incidents to the Anand Kumar saga that were not used earlier. Anand Kumar is not just a great mathematician. There are many sides to his personality that were not fully explored in the bio-pic. They are now looking at expanding the bandwidth of the bio-pic.”

  117. The Accidental Prime Minister movie review: A shoddy propaganda film
The Accidental Prime Minister review: The film is an out-an-out propaganda film, created for the specific purpose of making the former prime minister look like a weak, spineless man, a puppet whose strings were controlled by The Family.

Breaking the fourth wall is a convention used sparingly in theatre and film to score a point. Khanna’s smug, smirking Baru keeps turning around and addressing us, breaking the illusion of the ‘reel’, and that he is telling us the ‘real’ story. Khanna is always togged out in the most stylish of suits, and is shown to have the kind of enviable access in the corridors of power, literally, that very few senior ministers can ever hope to dream of. In fact, this film is so much more about Baru that it could just as easily have been dubbed ‘The Omnipresent Media Adviser’.

What comes as a surprise is just how shockingly bad and shoddy the film is. There is a complete absence of any art or craft in its making. Almost all the characters, including the two main leads, Singh (Kher) and Baru (Khanna), come off as caricatures. Kher minces through the film, his voice reedy, thin, shaky, his body language nervous and unconfident: at no point does Kher’s Singh look like a man who inhabited the PM ki kursi for two full Lok Sabha terms with any conviction.

Akshaye Khanna and Anupam Kher have done excellently as they tend to get in the character’s skin which makes it exhilarating to watch. Adding to it, its evident Anupam Kher is one of the best actors the country has offered the world while Akshaye, on the other hand, is one of the underrated Bollywood actors who has been casted aside without granting a chance to prove himself.

Cheers to Akshaye-Anupam’s performance, but the film lacks vision!

for some reason I don’t find Anupam Kher a great actor by any stretch of imagination! he is a confident actor at best

For one, I have found him effective in very few acting stints other than Saaransh. he is a performer who belonged to the 80s and 90s era of showy performances, with little regard for subtlety or nuance. From the 90s, I just remember him as a very irritating comic actor

which is why his acting stint in TAPM is hardly being praised to the skies in reviews. he has tried hard though to be as close to MMS in terms of his walk and voice and body language, but unlike great actors such as DDL, he doesn’t know how to strike the balance to not make the character seem like a caricature.
