    Aamir? Akki? Raju? Kaun?

A top male star who took an important stand in the wake of MeToo allegations not long ago could be in the tricky situation of having to distance himself from a close friend and frequent collaborator if hushed whispers about this filmwaala go public and are proven true.

It’s all that anyone in Bollywood is talking about these days.

    • Everyone is born to do a role. If given something else, they underachieve. A sachin as fast bowler would not have been half as great as he is.

MMS with his immense experience and knowledge was apt to be RBI Governor, Finance Minister or even maybe a President.

But as Prime Minister he was not effective. His personality was inappropriate and his disconnect with the masses made things lucky for him with Gandhis but no to the people. He was disconnected and couldn’t hear the cry of the people sick of scams, loot and absurdity of UPA2.

Hence an Accidental Prime Minister with not very good record of driver…but reasonably good as navigator (when FN or in RBI)

  5. The Accidental Prime Minister movie review: Anupam Kher delivers an appalling performance. 1 star

    BOLLYWOOD Updated: Jan 11, 2019 14:04 IST
    Raja Sen

    HIlarious excerpts.

Kher’s version of Singh speaks like a freshly bitten squeaky-toy, slides inconsistently in and out of a Punjabi accent, and, every now and then, remembers to move his hands jerkily, as if urgently (yet discreetly) trying to dry nail-paint. It is a profoundly, disappointingly silly caricature from a veteran surely capable of better. Accidental? In an attempt to laugh at the subject, Kher portrays him as a slightly mental Prime Minister. He routinely breaks off conversations at his desk, mid-thought, to stand pensively at the window, like it were a teleprompter. (Perhaps it was.)

Kher’s version of Singh speaks like a freshly bitten squeaky-toy.
Dr Singh was mocked for his silence, but his staunchest political rivals wouldn’t have called him lacking in dignity. Here, in a film where irony dies a million deaths, Kher chides his ally by saying “Please don’t be overdramatic,” and then prances out of the room walking like a marionette.

Akshaye Khanna plays Sanjaya Baru by frequently breaking the fourth-wall and speaking to the audience as if he’s letting us in on the joke. It is he who has the film’s few finely honed lines — “It’s been a while since we had a Prime Minister who didn’t have family members in real estate,” he smiles — but so drunk is Khanna on smugness that it feels like somebody told him, before the shoot, that this film is already a monster success. He’s the most unbearable kind of know-it-all: one who really doesn’t see what’s going on.

With all its hamhanded recreations and incessant news-channel roundups, this resembles an episode of Savdhaan India.

Akshaye Khanna plays Sanjaya Baru by frequently breaking the fourth-wall and speaking to the audience as if he’s letting us in on the joke.

Yet what is it warning us about? We are shown a purportedly weak man in power who, nevertheless, believes in facing press conferences without hesitation, tells his advisor not to pass judgement, and declares that his is not a one-issue government. Hmm. It is a film where names like Swaraj and Sibal are muted by the censors, but Dr Singh himself is not known to have voiced any objection. The existence and unimpeded release of this film is one in his win column, and hopefully it will give rise to genuinely powerful and incisive political cinema in this country.

Disclaimer: One of the film’s four screenwriters, Mayank Tewari, writer of Newton, is a close personal friend of the critic.

  7. Uri Opens Pretty Well – Accidental Prime Minister Decent
    Friday 11 January 2018 15.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Uri opened pretty well at around 20-25% which is a healthy start for this film. It is an action film but not Baaghi 2 type which will set the box office on fire. The film is patriotic but generally the patriotic ones which do big business have their hearts on the sleeve and a film like Manikarnika releasing in few weeks is actually in that zone. This is actually called Jingoism by the English media but its actually having hearts on the sleeve and being extra assertive which has seen patriotic films rule at the box office earlier.

Uri will be a film for the multiplex audience despite being an action film because of the above. Its a healthy start and it should grow over the weekend as its a multiplex film but the crunch will come on Monday. Normally action films are front loaded and it will be interesting to see if this film can world like a concept film and sustain over the next few weeks.

The Accidental Prime Minister had a decent 15-20% start and considering no face value it will be a decent number. There has been a controversy surrounding the film which has helped. The film has occupancy which is 30-40% lower than Uri but collections could be 50-60% lower as URI has more screens and capacity.

A Rajinkant film Petta was also dubbed into Hindi but the opening was very poor especially in North India. It had some decent collections at select cinemas of Mumbai city and Maharashtra which is the normal trend for Rajnikant films barring the historic 2.0. The film does not have much of a chance in the Hindi markets outside Mumbai / Maharashtra.

Simmba had a noticeable drop in collections on the third Friday due to many new releases.

He was a complete package in the movie and the way Abbas Mastaan presented him was out of the world then. The songs rocked big time too. Remember Baazigar trouncing Khalnayak to emerge as biggest musical in 93 which was no mean achievement. SRK never looked back and he knew.

The shock value i had and probably the entire theatre (it was pin drop silence for next half an hour) could only be surpassed by the ending of the sixth sense.

Now i don’t know the experience of those who watched it later on TV or laptop…but man you missed not watching in theatre.

        Cinematic experience at its best.

Earlier this week, in the United States, chef Gordon Ramsay was criticised for making Sophia Vergara uncomfortable withh sexual innuendoes and by touching her in 2010, when they appeared together on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
        Related Articles

Both Vergara and Sharma have the same reaction, smacking the men who made them feel uncomfortable while maintaining a smile on their faces.

However, the fact that both Singh and Ramsay are being called out several years later, is perhaps an indication of change post the #MeToo movement.

        • My LOL is simple. I don’t think what Pandya, Ranveer says constitutes sexual harassment or rape which is what many Bollywood folk were accused of. They are different overall situations. The women who were offended whenever X years ago (which I believe you said had less and less teeth in their stories) were victims and deserved their stories to be shared and the men held accountable. Here the men are just being stupid ala Pandya, keeping scorecards publicly. It’s not a crime just plain stupid! Unless they’ve actually hurt women in the process. The Ranveer tweets are LOL worthy as again some slap your ass comment is sexist but not physically an act of harassment unless he does it but Twitter is full of low lives who didn’t say anything back then but now are claiming all sorts as Ranveer is a big name now. And these Twitter folk are not victims at all!

The first metoo cases were cases but you were very particular about it for whatever reason. Now all of a sudden on frivolous (allbeit racist or sexist comments) you’re allover it!). The most Pandya is a dumb fool. Being sexist or racist in private is not an offence but a particular trait like that can be termed as someone who has these issues. Harassment shouldn’t be accepted at all.

Read what you may but the issues are different as one is a set of accused/victims and other man just being a pig. And being a pig in public itself is dumb but never punishment like rape or hitting or abusing women.

Suspension I get is pending formalities. My response on Pandya was initiated by Rocky’s post on it. I went on words on article I haven’t seen the interview.

I think you can safely say that this show was shot just for Pandya’s and his stories all over the net. KL Rahul is not even a star outside cricketing world to be on the show. I believe it was the point who wants to tag along Pandya for the show and KL Rahul joined and for that reason he’s paying the penalty. It is unfortunate but that’s life. I don’t expect BCCI to ban 1 person and not other when both went to the gossip show.

    • The #Metoo movement has to be looked at from both sides. Be it a male or female.

There has to be equality in justice.

Just because a girl accuses someone of sexual harassment it does not mean that person should be held guilty.

A man must be given a fair chance.

Genpact did not follow the Vishaka guidelines.

As per the Vishaka guidelines, there has to be an internal complaint committee that has to be formed and both parties must sit in front of each other.

According to the guidelines, a copy of the complaint has to be given to the accused person in 7 days. However, this was not followed in this case.

I don’t know whether the case is of internal politics or if these two girls wanted to get something professional out of Swaroop.

That is why I am begging the police that they must tell me the names of the girls.

If the police tell me their names, then I can tell them (the accusers) what Swaroop used to feel about them.

I know almost everyone in Genpact. I have worked there for the last three years.

Swaroop worked for Genpact for 11 years and had a spotless career.

      He was my loving husband.

If there was some kind of problem in the job, he would have come and discussed it with me.

98 per cent of his professional life was spent in this company.

He was too shocked by the way they treated him.

If these girls had such serious allegations, why did they not file a police complaint? Why are they hiding their faces even now?

The company is not telling me anything.

Some employees came to meet after Swaroop’s death, but only on a personal level.

Genpact employees have been told not to speak to the media or even me about his death.

It has been a week since Swarooop’s death and I have not been back to the company.

      • AnJo this is as down the middle as one can be. The allegations are so severe and lifestyle changing that both sides need to be heard. And a committee, commission that does it in the employee environment is common practice. Every film production should have such a facility. Every industry should have the facility.

Mental health is very high on the agenda. Again something that needs to be formally addressed if it concerns employees. These things all cost money but the repurcussions cost even more!

OLKATA: A screening of the film ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ was interrupted at a multiplex in a posh Kolkata mall on Friday by a group of West Bengal Congress workers who forced their way in and vandalised the theatre.
Protesters carrying Congress flags entered an Inox multiplex in central Kolkata’s Quest Mall around 8 pm while the screening of the film was about to start and tore up the screen.

The Congress activists also allegedly threatened the viewers to immediately leave the auditorium and claimed they would not allow the film to be screened anywhere as its content is “disrespectful” towards the senior party leaders.

“The film is an insult towards our senior leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Manmohan Singh. We have stopped the screening here. We will not allow the film to be screened anywhere,” Congress leader Rakesh Singh, who led the demonstrators, was quoted as saying by news agency IANS.

Some of the protesters were heard shouting slogans like “Rahul Gandhi Zinabad… Congress Zindabad (hail Rahul Gadhi and Congress)” inside the auditorium, IANS reported.

LLB 2 didn’t do great, it crossed just 100 crores which is no big deal for sequel of a huge loved movie on satellite and even with Arshad it would have done similar especially in a year when every smaller star movie was doing great. Even if it had some 80-90 crores it would have still more profitable than taking a huge star.

Chopra, needs to first get his head out of his ass. And Naveen, can’t believe you are following this! Can you please apply this logic to Akshay? TOILET, BABY etc., would have been the same without AKSHAY!!

There’s a reason why writers/directors go to an actor: Because they are convinced that their lines will be MOST effective when a certain actor plays the part. SHARAABI had Amit wriiten all over it. Can you IMAGINE a single actor who would have pulled off that part with the same intensity and slow-talk?

This same dumb-ass, VVC, said in a press conference, that they went for Aamir because one of the reasons that he believed in them, was that Aamir was the 4th idiot, since he went against the industry-prevalent norms..

So as I said, all this BS about ‘public’ being intelligent and recognizing good films/scripts, is BS.

This same ‘industry’ is clubbing Aamir with the other 2 Khans and trying to pass off and write obituaries..In 18 years, Aamir has one turkey…well, really nothing to write about in terms of the dumbness being exhibited…

      • With the coming of Akshay, the canvas should have been bigger if a bigger gross was to be desired. But guess producers, incl Akshay, were happy to keep it same as first one and focus more on script than on aesthetics.

This tactic is now proving to be ace for Akshay. The script was superb and there was no need to glossify it in the hope to get 200 Cr+. This is where most of the movies are failing despite being reasonably good.

        Like

        • On the point of LLB2, even Race 3 would have done easily 150+ crores with Saif Ali Khan and Abbas-Mastan. Going with Salman and spending fortune on budget and then giving him lion’s share of profit and still making 165 crores is one of the stupid decisions by the producers!

          Like

        • Unlike Race3, Jolly LLB was not in big league. It netted 35-37 Cr nett. So a 3 times more with Jolly LLB2 is a commendable achievement and credit will go to Akshay just for picking the script and showing the faith on the concept. Now Jolly series is in big league. So the process is now complete.

Jolly LLB 3 again is unlikely to do big even if we consider both Akshay and Arshad comes together. It would still do in similar range if canvas is kept at same level.

    Box Office India Trade Network

There were two big Tamil films released on Thursday with one Rajnikant starrer Petta and another film Viswasam. The collections in Tamil Nadu were better for the latter but Petta was better in other parts of India.. The Hindi version of Petta is a poor fare.

Petta collected 18 crore nett across India while Viswasam collected 16.25 crore nett across India. Both films had pretty good occupancy in Tamil Nadu which holds best chances for both but with both films playing on around 400-450 cinemas each the collections were never going to reach a high level as the release is 40-50% less than what it could have been.

Below are the top NETT collections in Tamil Nadu and only one film has crossed 20 crore nett and that was a solo holiday release. There have been a few changes in taxes in the state over the last 18 months so the GROSS order will be different. The top HINDI collections in Tamil Nadu are Dhoom 3 with 1.35 crore nett in all formats while with just a Hindi release it is Chennai Express with 80 lakhs nett.

The audience, too, flocked to the theatres to watch it. According to early estimates, the war drama has earned around Rs 5 crore on its opening day.

This week, two big Bollywood films opened in theatres – Aditya Dhar’s Uri: The Surgical Strikes, starring Vicky Kaushal and Yami Gautam, and Vijay Ratnakar Gutte’s The Accidental Prime Minister, starring Anupam Kher and Akshaye Khanna. The former has demolished the latter at the box office on the opening day.

According to early estimates, The Accidental Prime Minister, which released in 1300 screens across the country, managed to earn only around Rs 1.50 crore on its first day. Meanwhile, Uri: The Surgical Strikes reportedly made around Rs 5 crore.

The director is unknown in Indian market. Alita needs to be marketed as a Cameron film, at least in India and the results will be interesting to see.

  28. Uri And Accidental Prime Minister First Day
    Saturday 11 January 2019 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Uri had a pretty good opening day of around 8-8.25 crore nett. This is a very good number considering the face value of the film though if we compare with the films of last year then the value is less. Due to the tax change at the beginning of the year the NETT collections will generally look better compared to last year and this could get much better in the summer as multiplexes start raising prices to last year levels and even higher.

The opening day number is good for the face value of the film but the film has a lot of work to do as the budget is very high for the face value of the film. There should be good growth over the weekend but it will be about how well the film hold over the weekdays. Despite being an action film it is mainly the big cities that are doing well while smaller centers are low and single screens all over did not really collect.

The Accidental Prime Minister grossed a decent 3.25-3.50 crore nett on day one and again it is helped by the tax changes compared to the films of last year. The film was helped by it being a little controversial which got it some media hype which created awareness..

This film is also a total multiplex film and for metros as well and it remains to be seen how it goes over the weekend. If the controversy has really pushed the numbers a lot on day one then it could struggle for growth over the weekend.

  30. The documentary, released by Narada News Chief Executive Officer Mathew Samuel on Thursday, showed Sayan, an accused in the murder and robbery case, claiming that his co-accused Kanakaraj had been in touch with Palaniswami. Sayan is currently on bail.

Sayan alleges in the video that Kanakaraj, who was Jayalalithaa’s former driver, had told him that there was “Rs 2,000 crore cash and important documents in the estate” just before Jayalalithaa’s death. He also claimed that Kanakaraj had asked him to hire people from outside Tamil Nadu to steal documents from the estate and hand them over to Palaniswami, who Kanakaraj had allegedly met after he was sworn in as chief minister.

Kanakaraj was killed in a road accident in Salem later. Four more persons connected with the robbery had died soon after the incident, unidentified officials from the Coimbatore jail told Narada News.

“Ten of us, including Kanakaraj, entered the estate,” Sayan is heard claiming. “We tied up the security guards and robbed the documents. Most of the documents were the apology letters sent to Jayalalithaa by MLAs and MPs. We were promised Rs 5 crore for this job. But we did not receive even one rupee. Later, Kanakaraj was killed in an accident.”

In fact, we hear that in Street Dancer, Sharaddha Kapoor will be seen playing a Pakistani dancer who has been raised in the United Kingdom. Revealing the details, a source close to the film says, “See Street Dancer features two female avatars, one being a more desi dancer and the other being an international dancer. Now given the fact that Nora Fatehi will fit into the role of an international dancer perfectly, Shraddha will be seen essaying the other part. However, it cannot be a mundane dancer or the film will look like yet another ABCD outing. Hence Shraddha’s character has been developed to feature a backstory and a past, according to which she hails from Pakistan but has been raised in the UK.”

Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor were apparently not having a good time during the recent PM meet…

    By Sreejeeta Sen

For beginners, whoever has spotted the videos and pictures of the couple, while on their way to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi will know that they didn’t seem to have a good time together. In the viral videos, you can see Alia and Ranbir getting into an argument, post which the Raazi heroine looked completely lost and it was Ranveer Singh who tried to make sure things are fine around her.

So hua kya tha? Here’s the full lowdown. A source tells us, “It wasn’t a new argument between them. Of late, even during the shooting of Brahmastra, the two actors have been regularly fighting. Though they are trying to hide and say everything’s fine, it’s far from that.”

During the flight, it was a bizarre conversation which caused Alia to almost have a meltdown. “Alia controlled herself because she knew there were enough people around. RK apparently said something really insulting about the heroine and one of her habits during their plane ride.” Plus, Ranbir deliberately stuck close to Sidharth Malhotra, who happens to be his current flame’s ex and was also travelling with the entire Bollywood contingent.

It’s nothing new for the Sanju actor. “He is famous for treating his women badly. Although Alia and he will surely sort out their difference, we don’t know how long this will last.”

“Personally I liked The Lunch Box very much. But eventually the eighteen member jury supported The Good Road. Now I can say that some people from Bombay felt that the basic premise of The Lunch Box was wrong. Because the Dabbawalas never do such mistakes. Films are after all works of fiction, with the right to cinematic liberty! Although Lunch Box was my personal favourite, but as a chairman one should not impose his or her choice on others. And as you know this became suddenly a big controversy. And I think the media was again to some extent responsible for this decision. Because every day during the deliberation or the screenings, the media projected Lunch Box as the chosen one. It’s my assumption, that the members probably thought, “My God! If the media has already taken the decision then why we are here?” It was a Chomskian ‘manufacturing consent’ – Lunch Box, Lunch Box, Lunch Box every day!! So the members, who are all very important people from the industry, had an opposite impulse. I don’t know, but maybe that’s the way it happened.”

Watching Lunchbox. Felt how could Dabbawalas commit such mistakes? One day its ok. But other days? There are many questionable happenings like that. No woman in her right senses will continue to feed some stranger. And to carry the lovestory further, they conveniently made the husband a cheater.

Watched Queen but it was somewhat dragging. Some funny incidents in the foreign country were the saving grace. Otherwise the story is soso. Rajkumar role’s twists and turns were unnecessary. He just could have moved on without giving the family audience the satisfaction of seeing him begging for her love which was so contrived.

These two films were simply overrated. Compared Te3n was much more interesting. Also Talvar, Rahasya were far better IMO.

The first half is not that great, it is good. The second half, literally soars as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery. What characters! Akshay Tanksale as the philosopher BATTIS is a ‘havoc.’ Sai Tamhankar as the eternally-devoted Parnarekha is superb in her closeted avatar; a far-cry from the MILF in Hunter. Kamudi Walokar as Aarti is good. Parna Pethe as Antara is one symbol of eroticism — check out her Shakuntala dance and it raises the temperature like anything! [The entire song is in Sankskrit and by God, this song puts ALL the Sunny Leone clips in your New [folder] to shame]. Mukta Barve as Sayali is great in her tiny role. Nandita Joag is super as Sagar’s Moushi.

Highly, highly recommended. Add a couple of pints of GLEN when watching it, and the experience is terrific!

I have also provided a link to the MUST-WATCH marathi movies. I agree with the list..

Due to positive word of mouth, Aditya Dhar’s directorial showed a healthy jump on Saturday and raked the business of 12.10 crores. With this, the total collection of Uri The Surgical Strike after 2 days has become 20.30 crores nett at the domestic box office.

In parallel, Anupam Kher & Akshaye Khanna starrer The Accidental Prime Minister has unfortunately got mixed reviews from the critics but the audience is showing good support. On Friday, it registered the decent opening business of 4.50 crores from 1300 screens nationwide.

  56. Petta Leads In Tight Battle Down South
    Sunday 13 January 2018 09.15 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

There were two big Tamil films released on Thursday and Petta is leading in a very tight battle. The two day collections of Petta are 35.50 crore nett and the other release Viswasam has collected 33.50 crore nett.

But if you consider that Viswasam has not been released in hindi markets (although collections of Petta are hardly anything here) and Andhra Pradesh then this film is actually doing better than Petta. Also the budget of this film is less.

The budget though brings in Overseas and there it is a one horse race with Petta leading by leaps and bounds. It will probably be about Petta staying ahead in India in the long run which should enable it to come out ahead in the clash. The first two day all India NETT collections of Petta and Viswasam are as follows.

    .

    Petta

    Thursday – 18,00,00,000 apprx

    Friday – 17,50,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 35,50,00,000 apprx

    Viswasam

The film has scored very good collections Mumbai, East Punjab and West Bengal. Delhi / UP should also have been on the list as East Punjab is there but the collections in UP have let the film down as yet probably due to the treatment and lack of face value. The two day collections of the film are around 20 crore nett in two days which are good figures. The two day collections of Uri – The Surgical Strike are as follows.

    Friday – 8,25,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 11,75,00,000 aprxx

    TOTAL – 20,00,00,000 apprx

The Accidental Prime Minister had limited growth on Saturday with a jump of 15% apprx. This was sort of expected as the first day collections were pretty high for this type of film which meant it was the controversy which aided the film. The film collected 4 crore nett on Saturday to take its total to 7.50 crore nett which is still good collections for two days though the trend is not that good.

The two day collections of The Accidental prime Minister are as follows.

    Friday – 3,50,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 4,00,00,000 aprxx

    TOTAL – 7,00,00,000 apprx

  59. Difference between a well made film and not so well made film.

Uri and Paltan. Both are patriotic films. One is doing well and one is a flop. For that matter even TOH is a patriotic film.

As for TAPM, it has content but it was not well made from the reports. Akshaye’s overenthusiasm spoiled the film. Manoj Bajpayee would have made a better MMSingh.
Congress should be grateful for this film. It made people think of MMSingh. They can even make this film taxfree along with Uri. Uri is more about our army and so less political.

      • And who do you think is responsible for this situation?
Nehru wanted a limp-wristed military, he consistently refused to spend robustly on defense. As a result, after 15 years of wasting away precious time needed to build up a nascent nation’s defense, soldiers armed with 303 rifles got wiped out by the Chinese in 1962. At least Sallu displayed some of such history in Tubelight.

        Read this:
        https://www.researchgate.net/publication/282516217_India's_Military_Evolution_Modernisation_and_Transformation

“India’s failure after independence to strategise militarily and prepare accordingly was brutally
exposed during the Sino-Indian border war of 1962.”

The Chinese war jolted Nehru, who yet did not respond. But the stress of seeing the negative effects of all his foreign policy blunders finally killed him in 1964. It was only his successor Shastri who finally expanded the Defense budget, and also started imports, especially of Battle Tanks, that were severely lacking in the Armed Forces. These Tanks helped India to stave off Pakistan in the 1965 war. In fact, it was Shastri’s aggressive decision making during the 1965 war, eg opening new fronts in Punjab and other asymmetric battles which enabled a 1962 war-weakened Indian military to overwhelm a battle ready Pakistani force.

“The Indian military’s drive towards becoming a better prepared and equipped force started in earnest
from the time of Indira Gandhi’s accession to power in the late 1960s.”

Indira’s efforts paid fruit in 1971. However, the massive corruption during each and every Arms Import enjoyed by the Congress made it double down on Imports, rather than facilitate any sort of indigenous defense sector.

Now that Modi is trying to kick start private enterprise, we have RaGa leveling baseless fabricated scam allegations. Irony dies a thousan deaths when he claims that HAL has been devoid of contracts in Rafael!! The govt controlled HAL has probably the worst record of delayed deliveries and faulty equipment of any contractor in the whole world.
Why wouldn’t RaGa create this false issue, since his private gravy train is about to be driven off track.

        Liked by 2 people

        • I think it is absolutely futile to even talk abt RaGa and his comments. The pertinent question is – WHAT has Modi achieved in 4 years wrt national defense and manufacturing hi-tech weapons in India?

I will re-iterate this – 2019 elections is about Modi losing it because of lack of results to show. It is not a question of RaGa or Mayawati winning it!

        • So I was in Mumbai last 4-5 days. Spoke to a group of businessmen in their 50s-60s, who gave me this surprising perspective: They said, business is down since DeMon/GST. And rightly so, because now they cannot do any Dhaandli (the exact word used by them). One of them even said, we grew up learning the tricks of how to do chori. All business was in black to hide and save taxes. One even said, “we were so stupid, that we would loan black money in the market at 12%, while white money loans could fetch 15%+. But we wud not do the white money lending because we wanted to hide our profits and not pay tax, even though after tax net was the same! Doing business in black was so deeply ingrained in our psyches. Now due to GST and fear after DeMon, all our businesses have shrunk. It will take us another 2-3 years to convert black to white and show sales in our books.” Also, some said that their kids in the 20s do not and cannot comprehend this hiding tax business. Especially so many kids who studied abroad and understood the systems in the West are forcing their parents to clean up.
I visited a couple of builders to prospect property. Literally begging me to invest. And one was very frank to admit he needs all the white money he can lay his hands on, which can mainly come from NRI’s. But many NRIs are shying away because property has not appreciated for 4 yrs, and has lost value in terms of USD. But, even these builders appreciated the fact that their businesses were undergoing this huge black to white transformation.
But everyone collectively felt that only Modi can guide this economy forward. They have no trust in Cong assortment, especially one led by Pappu.
I went around town usually in Uber, sometimes in the kaali-peeli cabs. Spoke to almost every driver. So I would hear from the Uber guys how this new tech has created new business avenues, and how they fared better now. One Bihari driver in the yellow-black cab was lamenting loss of revenue due to Uber, and blamed the govt for allowing it! Also, blamed the govt for drop in business. He said, he used to park outside the Mumbai beer bars (eg the Chandni Bar types) at late night and get customers, but now there are not many who go to bars anymore. So this shows that govt has done a bad job. He also lamented that Modi promised he would end black money, but has he done that? I countered, well, you do understand that all those dance bar patrons largely spent black money, so now that its gone, they cant go there anymore. He concurred, and had no answer as to how the black money disappeared.
At same time, I went to restaurants and lounges in the Taj, 4Seasons, etc, where one pays 18% GST plus 20%VAT on alcohol. These places were always packed, mostly with well-heeled patrons, mostly in finance, industry etc., ie those making high white money incomes.

Now this is just a microcosm of feedback I collected from my travel last week to Mumbai. Very mixed picture. There is tremendous change happening on the ground. For sure, the old ways of working and doing business have changed in the last 4 years. And everyone admits that this is a period of transition. It takes a lot of time to move this huge economy and organize it so that the Govt can peek into each and every activity and demand an honest account for it. So that it can then tax accordingly and run welfare schemes. One of my friends drivers was from UP, and he said that we are getting Direct Benefit Transfers for housing scheme, but not for the Toilet Scheme. So village sarpanch ends up skimming the indirect welfare schemes. He hoped the Govt would do something about it. But even he admitted that 4 years back, none of these schemes existed, no one even had the vision to talk about these things. Also, that people who had smartphones and who were inquisitive could learn about such schemes and undertand how to avail the benefits. But large sections of illiterate people needed to be trained on how to avail of welfare schemes, which is an effort the Govt ought to take.
So all in all, this transformation was needed to be done, but that no one before had the guts to do. So the question is, will people be patient enough and wait for the fruits of this pain to accrue down the lane? God alone knows the mind of the Indian voter. We will know the results soon in the end of May 2019.

          Like

        • @NyKavi – Thanks for your comment on ground level feedback. There is no doubt that demonetisation and GST were necessary steps to organise a shoddy economy. In fact, it is a shame that this was not done for so long since our independence. And we need to be patient to see this transition through.

However, this is not good enough for Modi get a free pass to second term. For example, it is time to stop campaigning by making defensive statements to reply back to often nonsensical comments from opposition. Modi govt needs to publish a thorough self-assessment report of what they have delivered wrt their 2014 election manifesto – point by point. What has been done, What could not be done and What will be done in the second term. A thorough detailed analysis based on the promises that they themselves made before last elections.

Moreover, Modi’s 2019 manifesto can’t afford to be as vague as the previous one. He has to set hardcore specific goals that he has to achieve by all means. For example, with respect to economic and industrial development, his promises need to be as specific as:

          1. India is expected to become the fifth largest manufacturing country in the world by the end of year 2020. Under the Make in India initiative, the Government of India aims to increase the share of the manufacturing sector to the gross domestic product (GDP) to 25 per cent by 2022, from 16 per cent, and to create 100 million new jobs by 2022.

          2. The engineering R&D and product development market in India is forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 20.55 per cent to reach US$ 45 billion by 2020 from US$ 28 billion in FY18.

          3. The Government of India has released its roadmap to achieve 175 GW capacity in renewable energy by 2022, which includes 100 GW of solar power and 60 GW of wind power.

          4. In 2018, steel consumption of the country is expected to grow 5.7 per cent year-on-year to 92.1 MT. Further, India is expected to surpass USA to become the world’s second largest steel consumer in 2019.

This is just an example. But my point is that Modi’s legacy can’t be just survival strategies for 10 years. He has to get things done – And history will remember him only for that. Else its just oratory skills and rhetorics, which means nothing in the long run.

        • “…, it is time to stop campaigning by making defensive statements to reply back to often nonsensical comments from opposition. ..”
Marcus, all of what you have stated above can only be done in an educated developed economy like the US, Western Europe or Japan. All these facts and figures can only be understood by average Joes in those economies.
However, over 80% of Indians do not understand economics, strategy, forecast, etc etc. Their lives are driven by finding enough money at the start of a day to sleep with a belly full under a roof at night. If they do not get that much, they will blame the leader.

And here we have a relentless 24X7 media highlighting each and every nonsensical comment from the opposition, as well as the condemnable incidents from within the gau-rakshaks as well.
I would say that the majority of educated Indians understand this transformation. But the ones who are opposed to Modi are perhaps in the hopes that their old ways will be back.

However, these reforms such as GST will not and cannot be rolled back. The middle classes, traders etc will have to adapt to these changes. No one can roll them back. So they will be foolish if they vote anti-Modi in the hopes that the ole days will be back.

          Get to the Core.

Sadly our democracy does not even get the basics right. As for the media, they want to survive on dope and sensationalism. But your campaign is your own design – Opposition or Media cannot dictate terms to you.

AND opposition cant afford to make silly remarks, because it will not make any sense to highlight such drivel. Every debate will have to be based on Action points and Performance evaluation. For a change, Opposition will need to think about what they could have done to get any better results and also talk about what they can possibly do if they get power.

  61. Why Bollywood Celebs didn’t speak on #MeToo; Sonam Kapoor reveals

    Sunday, January 13, 2019 | 1:21:20 PM IST (+05:30 GMT)
    By Kriti Sharma. Indiaforums.

The wave of MeToo is still on and after engulfing many in it’s outraged fire, there are Btown celebs who still aren’t gathering courage to come forward with their stories. Earlier too Sonam Kapoor was the one who spoke about sexual harassment at the workplace and condemned all the harassment stories.

She even encouraged women to come forward with their stories and reveal the names of those who were predators. Recently, in an interview she spoke at length about it and also revealed why many from the Bollywood fraternity chose to stay mum about it.
She disclosed that one of her close friends went through sexual harassment and didn’t speak about it because she had many siblings to take care of. Another friend of hers didn’t want to be labelled as a victim and chose not to reveal anything.

And about the Btown celebs, she said that most of them chose not to voice anything even though they had faced all kinds of harassment. you know why? Well, as per Sonam Kapoor, and us too, there is lot of shaming and victim blaming in India. Which often leads to women not coming up with their side of the story and choosing to keep mum.

To see a woman with ordinary looks and ordinary clothes spending most of the time in that small kitchen trying to please her husband with her meals. The crampy flats and the crampy locals. the commanding voice of aunty. Liked it more than quirky Queen. Queen is also a different take on western culture which is regularly bashed. According to the latest update, Rajkumar Hirani’s Munnabhai 3 has been put on hold, till his name doesn’t get cleared. The filmmaker was accused of sexually assaulting a woman during the filming of Sanju.

However, the allegations have had an adverse affect on Hirani’s work. According to a report in a daily, Munnabhai 3 has been put on hold, till he gets a clean cheat. A source told the tabloid, “In a meeting in late December, it was decided that Fox would pull the plug on Munna Bhai 3 if Hirani was found guilty. The studio stands in solidarity with the survivor. VVC Films too has taken the matter seriously, and dropped Hirani’s name from the promotional material of Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga.”

“An ICC set up by VVC Films will investigate the matter. Munna Bhai 3, however, by default, is on hold till Hirani gets a clean chit,” the source added.

        1. Victim goes to media
        2. Media trial begins and accused is made to dissocate from all current work
        3. A non-judicial committee takes the case
        4. Case goes on.

        My proposal:

        1. Victim goes to judicial committee (if not formed, should be done), lodge FIR in police station and go to media if necessary
        2. Media trial begins but accused is not made to dissociate from any current work.
        3. If found guilty accused should be arrested under IPC, penalised and held responsible as per law.

Yes she did email to VVC and others. I would like to know what were the expectations? Why writing to VVC first and not to file a police complaint?

Nonetheless, the victim went to media, which i think is a right step but not the only step and definitely not the step before police complaint. It should have been done after filing a police complaint and lodging a case in court. Because once matter is in court, media usually cannot play dirty. But they can if it is not to sabotage either the victim or accused.

        • “Hirani can start work if he is funding his film himself. ”

But asking every accused to start on his own is quite unfair. It is against the principle of humanity.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 11, states: “Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence.”.

Rajkumar Hirani is the big shot here.. and you are asking the victim to do everything to prove him guilty and pronouncing him innocent till then. Dont you think it will take huge courage on part of that girl even to speak up against this? Going to the producer and his wife was the best she cud do and she did it. Ofcourse, it seems like they have asked around and found it to be true, thats why his name went missing from next film credits. And surely the word will get out and some media did an investigative report. And ofcourse you can see the ‘decent’ treatment he is getting still, as it hasnt made such a big splash here.

We know with the workings of the justice system, the odds are against any victim to get any kind of justice. Some professional damage and loss of face is all that he might face. Let him face that!

        • I do agree there should be a proper system in place so that victims can get justice while offenders are punished adequately and without too much delay.

But the presumption of innocence until proved guilty remeins of fundamental importance. Hirani can not be punished before he is proved guilty. He cannot be condemned before that.

I am aware that it takes a lot of courage for victims to come forward and report what they have gone through especially during trial stage.

But let’s not forget that there always is a risk of a frustrated person who works for someone and then decides that accusing his employer is the easiest way to extract revenge. There may be cases of extremely consensual relationships that turn sour and accusations of harassment may be the easiest way to harm the other, especially if the latter has engaged in something extra-marital.

I remember a couple of years back, I personally came across a case where a young female student accused her teacher of harassing her. The latter fortunately had a recorder in his office and every conversation and meeting with students there were being recorded, It turned out from these recordings it was obvious that in fact, it was the other way round. The girl had been harassing him and, being hurt by his constant polite refusals, she ended up telling everyone among her close cycle that they were having a secret affair and later on she even accused him of harassment.

One can never rule out different scenarios before a formal inquiry and findings are made. At times, people in powerful positions can commit the most heinous of crimes but at other times, they may be in the most vulnerable position as well.

This is why the presumption of innocence is so important and a trial by the media can be really harmful.

        • This I agree with most points. Speed of condemnation will always be better served even more so with famous celebrities. But a victim has to overcome those inner demons or the trauma which could be weeks or months but when it’s years it will be harder for all kinds of reasons to get justice.

It’s not the same but if my home was robbed yesterday I’m sure the police will do something about it quicker, it’s immediate and witnesses can help etc. What can they do 10 years later or how much less can they do after so long. The horse has bolted! In these cases after so many years the OFFENCE is the same but the chances of convinctions reduces pretty rapidly. And even the victims intentions will be questioned, basically everything becomes grey.

You get divided opinion which is not what is wanted in a court or media. Decisive action and decisions is what everyone wants.

In the end, the girl handed him a written apology accepting that she had falsely accused him. The teacher did not accept that and he was taking her to court. Her parents (they were wealthy- they were big importers of wood from Madagascar) and opted to settle the matter out of court. They paid a healthy compensation.

This is much better choice for him than likes of Fan, Raees, JHMS, Zero and his long list of flops in recent times. Don films can perhaps be a lifeline for him now like MI films are for Cruise. Do a Don film every 2 years. They wont be big grossers, since Farhan does not understand how to pace a thriller film albeit all his style. Don 3 may do just 200 cr in 2020, but it will give srk some relevance, which he desperately needs.

      • The last Don had a plot even more hilarious than Race 3. There were immunity papers being signed and granted within minutes by a single call during the middle of the night. Germany looked like a law-less country. You could do anything in its national bank and that’s including flirting and falling in love right in the middle of the burglary. And the girl falls in love with the guy who coldly murdered her whole family.

The main officials, the main protagonists and antagonists are all conveniently Indians and the German police have to seek Don’s help to free hostages.

And to introduce Don, you have a dozen of German guys dressed in sleeveless t-shirts, singing and dancing to the tune of ‘zara dil ko thaam lo’ and for a while you can’t help wandering if it is not a gay night-club.

I just hope SRK goes for Salute. However, skeptical I was in terms of the substantiality in this project, at least it will be better.

Similarly, Salman’s best bet for a hit is now Tiger 3 with Yrf. Bajrangi Bhaijaan was a fluke for him, and Bharat is likely to be another Tubelight. Dabangs and Kicks cant meet his BO expectations anymore, those kind of BO collections are expected from Ranveer at this point.

Don 3 and Tiger 3 are survival films for these stars, unless these stars and their well-wishers want to live in a bubble. As for Aamir, he seems to have run out of all options now.

The gimmick of Dwarf was pointless in a triangle love story.

Don 3 will not change anything in that it’s not ambitious at all. I’d prefer a star of SRK’s size to do Ra.1 sequel than Don 3. At least the former is ambitious, Don 3 I might as well watch the dozens of mainstream Hollywood thrillers or Netflix.

Either go big or small but be economical about it and drop the love story altogether. Days of chasing women are over.

        • The writing is on the wall for SRK. Industry folk like KJo have moved on (this KJo is a twat IMO, kind of very harsh to do what he is doing), now I would bet SRK hasn’t walked out of SJSA but makers have as he’s too risky now.

So his options are really limited IMO. He should just do a small film, no risk and make some money for industry – give people confidence in him again otherwise I don’t think sensible film producers will touch him.

        • “Playing safe is stuff like HNY, Dilwale and JHMS”

I remember that Dilwale was signed for only reason that CE was hit and it was to be padded between 2 risky projects of FAN and Raees. Even Zero was risky in that space.

But Don3 has been in the talks for ages now and he told once irrespective of anything, he will complete the triolgy. Even I prefer to have a trilogy of Don (good for any actor a-la Bourne Identity box set).

Doing Saare Jahan .. is redundant after Zero. Also, if Srk is not the producer of Saare Jahan.. it will be pointless as they will make it in smaller budget and it will not look even as good as much as Zero 2nd half which technically is brilliant.

All the talks about younger star as Rakesh Sharma was only 36 yrs don’t make sense as Rakesh had 10 yrs kid when he went to space. You can’t take younger star and show 10 yrs kid now.. it’ll be better suited for actor in 40’s and 50’s.

Srk was ready to do Don 3 after SJSA but I don’t think he will do directly Don 3 now. He will still need a buffer in between maybe a small budget quick movie before going all out with Don 3. Also Don 3 is not out and out commercial massy movie, it was never one. Its not Dhoom franchise. Farhan Akhtar won’t target the massy audience. Its more for multiplex elite (at least its been for part 2). Unless they go route the full on commercial zone with part 3 as some reports suggests.

    • Indian movie stars cater primarily to domestic box office while Hollywood stars cater to the global box office. Indian box office collections, including global collections of Indian movies, were less than 4 percent of global box office collections in 2017. In other words, Salman and Akshay’s potential market is a tiny fraction of that of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and yet they earn on average 40 percent of what Johnson does.

Put differently, if you look at the Global Fortune 500 companies, the highest ranked domestic Indian company in terms of sales stands at Number 137 ( Indian Oil) and Number 111 (HDFC Bank) in terms of market cap and rightly so. HDFC Bank, for instance, which caters exclusively to the Indian market cannot justifiably be a Fortune Top 10 company (yet), given the size differences between the Indian and large developed economies. In the context of their potential market, Indian movie stars are clearly overpaid and content producers need to think about this urgently especially with the waning box office appeal of these A-listers.

Instead of raising the price, Every superstar movie releasing on a holiday should come with reduced price and a free popcorn.

    • Good deal. Varun D. needs one of films for the masses occasionally. Films like October are not going to bring in the big numbers.

I do think that in MTH and Judwaa, Varun showed good comic timing. He can be a good hero for the masses.

Also, Coolie No. 1 remains of the best Govinda comedies. Those Govinda/Kader Khan scenes and the parts with Govinda impersonating his own fictitious twin brother were hilarious. He was outstanding.

  87. I wont write Aamir and Salman off just yet. But there does come a time when anyone, even the best of them all, may end up looking stale.

I think in the late 80s there was a period when things changed drastically in the pecking order of male stars. Bachan was about to take a sabbatical. The old guard, the likes of Dhamendra, Vinod Khanna, Jeetendra, Shatru, Rishi Kapoor and Mithun were in considerable decline.

There was a younger guard with the likes of Anil, Sunny, Govinda, Jackie and Sanju threatening to take over. And there were the 3 Khans along with Akshay Kumar and Devgan that had just got started.

In a couple of years, the old guard practically disappeared while of the younger guard, only Sunny, Govinda and Sanju lasted a fair bit. After a decade or so, the 3 Khans started dominating completely with each getting very strong spells.

We’ll have a clearer picture by 2020. Maybe by that time, the likes of Ranbir, Ranveer, Varun, Tiger, Ayushman, Vicky Kaushal will take over completely.

We also have another generation of actors that have been struggling in between. These are the likes of Hrithik, Abhishek, Vivek Oberoi, Shahid etc.. if these had fulfilled their earlier promise, maybe there would not have been the re-emergence of the likes of Salman, Akshay or Devgan during the last 6-7 years.

It is astonishing that guys like Aamir, Salman, SRK, Akshay, Ajay and even Saif all started nearly 30 years back. That some of them are still going strong probably owes partly to the fact that the generations that succeeded them were not really up to it.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yes. This new wave of talent is akin to the turn of century when 3-4 emerged but only Hrithik threatened. But now the top stars are pretty much batting on gas and air. Genuinely feels like things are changing.

Aamir IMO has to get his next film right or whatever he does. Salman I feel a lot is now riding on Bharat as the narrative is Salman, Aamir and SRK are failing and the next release is Bharat so I’m sure the media will spin the story a lot. Akshay and Devgnn will do films IMO and continue a little longer. But not big enough to mount anything like Salman or Aamir still possibly can.

Hrithik still has a slight shot as he is a genuine 30Cr+ day one star given the right project.

Change is good. Main thing will always be good films and entertainment.

      • His singular achievement will be to have spent his entire political capital on DeMon/GST. The effect of this achievement will only be felt a 10 years from now, with a vastly transformed, digitized and organzed economy, throttling full speed to vie for at least the #2 spot (after China).

The Congress had a full 10 years until 2014, and they could not even get the GST going, cause they were shit scared of losing their political capital. They happily took credit for the 1991-95 reforms, and kept basking in that nascent glory. Btw, those reforms were forced upon them due to an empty treasury, mortgaging entire gold reserves, 18%+ Dollar loans to NRI’s, etc. They hardly did anything worthwhile to follow up when they took over in 2004, because the after-effects of Vajpayee’s Infratructure investments kept the economy going for another 3-4 years. And they just ceased all activity from 2010-14, just a full stop on the nation’s groth. As a result, China zoomed ahead in that Lost Indian Decade, and left India in an even deeper hole.

And look what that “Fear of Losing Capital” got them: 44 LS Seats, lowest in their storied history. And now, they are happily ceding away vast chunks of their erstwhile geographic domains to Family Hoodlum Regional Parties. I find it ironical to see Congi supporters cheering SP-BSP, TMC, JDS, etc etc. What the heck are they smiling about? They will never ever be able to get back those lost domains!

The simple truth is that educated Indians do not like any pain. They either emigrate to developed economies, or they use corruption to buy the ease in their own country. This attitude has perennially subdued the poor, uneducated and socially outcast masses, under a yoke of corruption. The pain caused to the poor has continued bcoz 2 years of reforms cannot turn around a 70 yr old infested system. Any unbiased educated guy will vouch for the massive underlying transformation that is indeed occurring in the Indian Economy. But the blind will forever ignore and berate it.

By not trusting anything generic was that I was talking about suddenly 1 person tweeting and blaming Hirani or anyone which can’t be trusted so easily but this one came out in Huffingpost who did thorough job earlier too with Vikas Bhalla. They reached out to Vinod Chopra, Anupama Chopra, Abhijat Joshi and all and took time before printing it out (exactly the same way they did with Vikram Motwane, Anurag Kashpay, Phantom movies ending etc). They again didn’t write the victim’s name as in Vikas case. This is not hatched job but a thorough professional article which makes it to be taken seriously. It doesn’t have any gory details like Vikas case but if the victim is not coming out then obviously she’s not getting any benefit directly which makes it more prone to be near truth.

Uri – The Surgical Strike Is A HIT – Huge Monday

      Box Office India Trade Network

Uri – The Surgical Strike is heading for huge success as it recorded excellent collections on Monday. The film was aided by a partial holiday in the country due to Makar Sankranti but even allowing for that the collections very good.

The film collected around 9-9.50 crore nett as per early estimates which has taken the business of the film to around the 45 crore nett. Even though it is a partial holiday and the collections will come down to normal levels tomorrow this is still enough to confirm the film is a HIT. the next few days and second Friday will tell if the film goes up a level.

The collections on Monday are higher than Friday and that also coming of a healthy first day number of 8.50 crore nett. The film looks on course for a minimum 60 crore nett first week unless there is a big drop tomorrow but its not a big holiday that the collections drop 50% the next day.

The movie could have been jingoistic but it is not. Also there is no need to get defensive on jingoism. I personally do not think “jingoism” is bad thing as far as India and Indians are concerned. The cinematography is fab. Acting by Vicky is just right. My personal favorite however is new comer Mohit Raina, hottie and dimples that can knock off SRK from his vanishing throne! There are one or two humorous scene, unintentional I am sure but funny, in otherwise tense movie. I thought it would be about surgical strike from beginning to end but the actual mission is only in last chapter, chapter 5. Movie is divided in 5 chapter. Aditya Dhar does not look like 1st time movie director. He is good. And really good for a new comer! Expecting a lot from him in future. Watch out for Mohit in future!

My point is that support it as much as you want, but lets not classify it as a bonafide BO Hit film until it adds a substantial amount of collections to its tally. You can support a film with full force without calling it a Hit pre-maturedly, cant you? If you like it, then praise it, review it, spread wom at your level.

It has happened sooner than expected. Ever since Bollywood’s most-envied and celebrated filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani was called out in the #MeToo Movement, he has been declared ‘an outcaste’. A source says, “The tables have been turned on Raju so quickly, he probably hasn’t had time to recover.” From the outside, it appears as if the Sanju filmmaker’s closest associates — Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Abhijat Joshi — are the ones who have pulled the carpet from under his feet. On his part, Hirani has already denied the allegations.

Bachan will end the year with Brahmastra, where I expect him to have a limited, supporting role like in Thugs. But it’s a fact that Bachan is very active and is doing plenty of interesting work even at his age.

    Last night Modi tweeted this:

“Tomorrow I will be in Balangir to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for several development works, which will have a transformative impact on Odisha’s progress.

Projects that would be inaugurated include:

    1. 28.3 acre Multi Modal Logistics (MMLP) Jharsuguda.

    2. Balangir-Bicchupalli new rail line.

    3. Electrification of 813 km of Jharsuguda-Vizinagaram and Sambalpur-Angul lines.

    4. Doubling of Barpali-Dungaripali and Balangir-Deogaon road line.

    5. Bridge no. 588 between Therubali-Singapur road station.

    6. Passport Sewa Kendras at Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Puri, Kandhamal, Bargarh and Balangir.

    7. Renovation and restoration works at Asurgarh Fort in Kalahandi.”

However, what is missing? No stress on when these projects will be completed. We need our govt to talk in terms of project completion dates and hard deadlines – not just about inaugurating stuff.

It is always a question of deliveries, not initiation.

Priya Prakash Warrier who stole hearts on the Internet with her one wink from a Malayalam film Oru Adaar Love’s romantic track Manikya Malaraya Poovi is in the news again but not for pleasant reasons. A teaser of her film, Sridevi Bungalow, was launched recently and that has put the makers in a spot with Boney Kapoor. The teaser traces an actress’s (played by Priya) leading to her death in a bathtub. Now, this is not a mere co-incidence as last year, legendary actress Sridevi passed away due to accidental drowning in a bathtub in Dubai. It is natural that this movie would invite controversy as there are too many parallels drawn between Sridevi’s real life and the movie Sridevi Bungalow. The makers confirmed receiving the legal notice and claimed that they will fight it. The director of the film Prasanth Mambully said that Sridevi is a common name and the movie is NOT based on the legendary actress but a work of fiction.

The director asserted that he has completed almost 40 percent of the film despite coming on board a few months ago and only a few songs and patchwork is pending. Besides discussing Housefull 4 in recent reports, if there is yet another thing that the director is excited about, then it is to work with Rohit Shetty and Akshay Kumar. He also revealed that he is also scripting Varun Dhawan films too.

Readers would be aware that Rohit Shetty is collaborating with Akshay Kumar for the first time in the cop drama Sooryavanshi where the action star plays ATS [Anti-Terrorist Squad] officer Veer Sooryavanshi. While there aren’t many details available on the film, let us tell you that it is Farhad who is scripting the film. Although he too maintained silence on the details of the film, he did reveal that it will go on floors in mid-2019.

One more interesting fact that Samji asserted was that he is writing three scripts for Akshay Kumar. While he didn’t reveal about the other two scripts he is working on for the actor [besides Sooryavanshi], he confirmed that he is not writing the script of Hindi remake of Veeram, thereby putting an end to ongoing rumours. On the other hand, he also maintained that he is writing three scripts for Varun Dhawan too but refrained from speaking about it.

“Cheating mafias are cheating in our country and that’s why we kept the title ‘Cheat India‘. It is very easy to change the title of the film but I think more than changing the title of a certain film, we need to change the system, then the youth of this generation will have a brighter future.”

Talking about the loopholes in the education system he said, “I have learned a few things in my school life as a student but there are lots of things which I haven’t learnt during that period.”

“We concentrate on mugging rather than understanding a subject. In colleges, our faculties are unqualified or they are disinterested in teaching. We have limited seats in educational institutes where a huge number of students pass out from schools and colleges every year.”

The actor added that he didn’t know that the cheating mafia is organized crime in the country.

“I knew about cheating mafias but I didn’t know it’s such a huge organised crime. In every state of the country, there is the existence of cheating mafias. We give 60 percent reservation in educational institutes so, in remaining 40 percent, if we start giving seats to undeserving students then where will deserving students go? I thought it’s a very important issue and somebody needs to make a film on a subject like this so that people will become aware of such practices.”

Emraan said they want the film to get tax-free status in cinemas.

    • On Rafale:

The original deal made some sense, as there was a significant aspect of Knowledge Transfer of Manufacturing Technology from Dassault Aviation to HAL, which would have been in line with govt’s #MakeInIndia tagline. Not sure what quality of fighter planes HAL would have manufactured eventually, but at least the attempt would have been significant.

Instead the deal that was signed bought 36 jets ‘off-the-shelf’ from France with a clause that 50% of that 60,000 cr wud be invested in offset partner Reliance Defense (which is not a govt organisation in the first place) ?

I am not that concerned with SC verdict or pricing details as long as I can get a valid answer to the above question.

India could have upgraded HAL with half that amount but our attention was diverted to nuclear weaponry which is also important as a deterrent. No country is ready to give away their technology. And technology is not static. It is dynamic. Every few months, newer technology kicks in and stockpiling is a waste of resources in view of this. I feel China, Russia and US has the most advanced technology and they are most secretive about their work in progress. Fortunately Pakistan has become less dangerous because of their internal squabbles. Imran Khan looks more like a wannabe cricketer than an authoritative head of a state. Our main threat is China but China also knows that we are their biggest market and they will not push too hard.

      • Once again, falsehoods galore!
An indecisive UPA spent 10 yrs inordinately delaying the purchase, during which IAF started facing significant shortfalls in capable fighter jets. The deal made by Modi was to get flyaway condition jets ASAP. This whole 30,000cr offset to Reliance number is a red herring. In actuality, they get less than 600crs of offsets, while even HAL gets more offsets than Reliance.

Just think about it, even after negotiating a flyaway condition deal, the earliest deliveries would only start in end of 2019!. So, EVEN IF they had tried a utopian transfer-of-tech to HAL, how long would it have been before IAF actually received their first jet? HAL has not been able to even deliver 2 generation old MIGs to the IAF, where the heck would they gain expertise to do so for the latest gen Rafael??

RaGa has been disingenuously trying to muddy the waters, with the huge risk that all these juvenile insinuations could force the French to call of the deal and deny the IAF of urgently needed combat capabilities.

        • “The deal made by Modi was to get flyaway condition jets ASAP.”

You mean to say the jets will be delivered in flyaway condition. Then what part Reliance or Hal are supposed to play? Is it assembling or maintaining?

France’s Dassault Aviation said on Monday it had received a contract from the French government to upgrade the Rafale fighter jet. The so-called F4 version of the multi-role Rafale, which is being developed for a reported investment of €2 billion, will include greater connectivity to allow “networked combat,” Dassault said in a statement. The company added that the validation of the F4 standard is planned for 2024 and that some features will be available from 2022.

The French government inked the contract with the aircraft maker on January 14.

So the upgrade is still going on.

I think that it is wise to order 36 instead of 110 or so in view of the ongoing upgradation.

Would opposition make this noise if it was not for Reliance name?

HAL is a govt organisation – SO govt can breathe down its neck in regards to constant accountability and meeting of deadlines. That is a progressive stance … 36 jets from Dassault will not make IAF win any war if one breaks out. Only when we start building stuff ourselves, we will start having an iota of chance of winning. Otherwise we are fighting a lost game.

          So take your pick.

        • In a limited mandate of 5 years, no political party can ever change bureaucratic inefficiencies. Its a bit much to expect HAL to rise like a phoenix after 6 decades of corrupted bureaucratic inefficiency. Red Tape cannot ever be changed, it can only be shredded.
Just look at the Western Democracies, no defense entity out there is run by a government. They are all private enterprises, but with significant lobbying power over their govts, which enables them to maintain a deal flow on taxpayer dollars.
It would be borderline insane to sign a three times bigger “tech-transfer” deal with Dassault, with the hopes of on-time delivery from HAL. The main reason it never materialized even after 10 years of negotiations was because Dassault kept finding faults in HAL, and it took a decade to even have HAL agree to their terms and conditions. And what if HAL could not follow up on all their promises to Dassault? Would you rather play with National Security? And that too at a cost of more than 150,000crs??

The need of the hour was to get as many jets in as less time with maximum bang for the buck.

Coming to offsets, please go listen to the Lok Sabha Debate on the same. An offset can be any tradeable good, commodity, service etc which the French would have to buy in lieu of the deal. This is to ensure that a Balance of Trade is maintained. The Cong had made the law on offsets, with a minm requirement of 30%. BJP forced France to have 50% offsets. So on a deal of 59,000cr, the offset was 30,000cr. Reliance may not even make anything related to the Rafael aircraft. They could be making pins and needles for the French in the 600crs alloted to them.

Once again, all of this bogus insinuation has been made by Cong to muddy the waters ahead of the election. This is playing with national security. But RaGa has to be made the King, so the IAF be Damned!

        • I think ISRO is also a government organisation working quite efficiently.
HAL did commendable work for many years.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) was formed on 1 October 1964 when Hindustan Aircraft Limited joined the consortium formed in June by the IAF Aircraft Manufacturing Depot, Kanpur (at the time manufacturing HS748 under licence) and the group recently set up to manufacture MiG-21 under licence, with its new factories planned in Koraput, Nasik and Hyderabad.[5] Though HAL was not used actively for developing newer models of fighter jets, except for the HF-24 Marut, the company has played a crucial role in modernisation of the Indian Air Force. In 1957 company started manufacturing Bristol Siddeley Orpheus jet engines under licence at new factory located in Bangalore.

During the 1980s, HAL’s operations saw a rapid increase which resulted in the development of new indigenous aircraft such as the HAL Tejas and HAL Dhruv. HAL also developed an advanced version of the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21, known as MiG-21 Bison, which increased its life-span by more than 20 years. HAL has also obtained several multimillion-dollar contracts from leading international aerospace firms such as Airbus, Boeing and Honeywell to manufacture aircraft spare parts and engines.

By 2012, HAL was reportedly bogged down in the details of production and has been slipping on its schedules.[6] On 1 April 2015, HAL reconstituted its Board with Mr. TS Raju as CMD, Mr. S Subrahmanyan as Director (Operations), Mr. VM Chamola as Director (HR), CA Ramana Rao as Director (Finance) and Mr. D K Venkatesh as Director (Engineering & R&D). There are two Govt. nominees in the Board and six independent Directors.

In March 2017, HAL Chairman and Managing Director T Suvarna Raju announced that the company had finalised plans for an indigenisation drive. The company plans to produce nearly 1,000 military helicopters, including Kamov 226, LCH (Light Combat Helicopter) ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter), and over 100 planes over the next 10 years. HAL will manufacture the Kamov 226T helicopter under a joint venture agreement with Russian defence manufacturers. The Kamov 226T will replace the country’s fleet of Cheetah and Chetak helicopters. Over the next 5 years, HAL will carry out major upgrade of almost the entire fighter fleet of Indian Air Force including Su-30MKI, Jaguars, Mirage and Hawk jets to make them “more lethal”. The company will also deliver 123 Tejas Light Combat Aircraft to the IAF from 2018–19, at a rate of 16 jets per year.

Chinese attack made Indian government to pay more attention to defence. Unfortunately Nehru’s peace talks made us a weak country. Shastri and then aggressive Indira Gandhi made amends for that lapse. And from then onwards we never slipped but for occasional skirmishes which is happening even today. It is terrorism not war that is troubling us. BJP joining hands with PDF did not help matters. We can blame partition and Nehru for that. But going about them again and again will not help.

        • Space agencies are a bit diff, all of them (NASA, ISRO, CNSA, Roscosmos, etc) are govt orgs. Why so? Bcoz they don’t have to sell anything commercially. They work FOR the govt. At max, they sell their services to other countries, but not their equipment. eg, ISRO’s satellite launch service.

Defense companies need contracts to survive, and they have to keep selling. Their business is war. Coming back to HAL, sure it has made tons of cheap stuff that does get sold to 3rd world countries who cannot afford the exorbitant billion dollar contracts of the Western manufacturers. That is the niche customer segment HAL caters to, with their simple 3-4 generation old technology products. One cannot expect Suzuki to make Rolls Royces overnight. HAL’s record on Tejas, Dhruv, MIG-21 etc is pathetic to say the least.
And here Cong was trying for 10 yrs to force Dassault to go with HAL to manufacture a state-of-the-art fighter jet. Its not a cake-bake for Christs sake! Even Lockheed Martin has had issues making the F-117, F-22 etc Stealth Jets, and it took them billions of dollars and decades to develop them. How could Dassault just trust the GOI and approve a elementary tech workshop such as HAL?

So again, coming back, one either has a sense of urgency in defense matters, or one just wants to play games. The history of Congi defense deals is replete with corruption taints and middle men gravy trains. For them national security takes a back seat, its about what’s in the deal for them. They cannot comprehend that Modi did a Govt to Govt deal WITHOUT a Middle Man!! So they created this Strawman, this bogey of Reliance and the Great Robbery. Simply Pathetic!

        • No one is saying HAL will be able to deliver without the govt investing in it. Nothing comes out without long term investment. Work on removing the red tape, hire the best skilled talent, fire the idiots, give them proper developmental infrastructure, etc etc. These stuff comes along with the decision to get hands on. And it means allocating budget adequately for all this. Anyways, 36 imported jets are not going to make India’s defense suddenly become stronger. And get RaGa out of the equation if you want to really debate.

        • Re: Shastri/Indira: Sure, they did HAVE the sense of urgency. They had to rebuild after almost 2 Lost Decades due to Nehruvian Quizotian Utopia. They started HAL and made major reforms to Defense. But that was way back in 1965-1975. What happened after them? Did the consecutive govts of Congress and the myriad gathbandhans pay attention? Did they care? It was Vajpayee who officially took India to the Nuclear Club. And his statemanship and foreign policy ensured that the West de-hyphenated India from Pak. And then again we have 10 yrs of UPA wasting time and rolling back the clock backwards. Where did National Security go??

        • “..Anyways, 36 imported jets are not going to make India’s defense suddenly become stronge..”
Boss, I am not the IAF honcho here, but common sense dictates that one immediate bird in the hand is better than the two in the HAL bush.
One can off course create the eco-systems for defense. Do you not think Modi has tried it? Have they let him? How much time and space have got wasted by this juvenile Congi attempt at trying to derail the entire deal? Would all this energy not have been put to better use by supporting the deal and working co-operatively towards creating that eco-system for tech advancement?
An eco-system can only be created by engagement and change in rules of the game. Modi can barely scratch the surface of bureaucracy. What all do you expect him to do in such a short while?? Boss, 70 yrs of shit cant be cleansed in 5 yrs. Its a simple fact.

A seat at that high-table would have guaranteed ‘sharing’ of all kinds of tech from the Democratic nations of US/UK/France. But, uncle had to try his convoluted ideas at the expense of the nation. He single-handedly condemned India to 5 decades of holding a begging bowl. Yet again after Raazi, Stree and Badhaai Ho we have a non star film creating havoc at the box office cementing the fact that today’s audience gives as much importance to strong content as it does to face value. Uri’s performance confirms my belief that had an absolute gem of a war film like Lakshya (which was well ahead of its times) released in today’s age of metro multiplexes, it would have hit bull’s eye! Congrats to entire team of Uri and hopefully this film outgrosses all other mid range films.

I will still give benefit of doubt to Hirani but that huffingpost and Vinod Chopra, Abhijat Joshi going against Raju says a lot. Firstly its very clear that Raju is not a predator type personality like Alok Nath or Vikas or Sajid Khan. He will not attack every women he meets or tries to abuse them. That doubt is clear. But but but.. even the most gentlemen and great personalities can have weak moment with just 1 female and that is always the possibility. He might have just got interested in that particular assistant and abused her. Its hard to believe this but human mind is that complicated. Person can be same to 99.99% but there can be 1 side of his which is not open to anyone or anywhere and it suddenly shows up somewhere like anger, lust and abuse.

So, all the people who don’t meet Hirani in daily lives giving out support articles helps but only to an extent. It is about that individual lady and only that person can say its truth or not. When Anupama said that lady stayed at her place for 2 nights and they spoke and she also offered some counseling contacts they have seen it first hand. If that lady is some fraudster it would be easier to figure out and it would have not been the case for Vinod and Anupama letting her stay 2 nights at their own place.

Either ways, I don’t know how truth can come out here as that lady is not going to file police complaint.

The actor stated that things didn’t go well with the director and Kangana and they wanted to reshoot the film. He requested to know what you exactly want to reshoot and he will shoot a few scenes if they think they are important to shoot. But when he saw the film he felt the way it was edited, the scenes that we shot in the film were missing in the film. This thing really disturbed him that you put so much of hard-work shooting those scenes and when he asked for those they said we want to reshoot some portions of the movie.

    Thursday 17 January 2019 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Zero and Simmba made an inpact The Box Office India Star rankings as it saw Ranveer Singh go upto fifth place which is highest ever position while Shahrukh Khan dropped to sixth place which is his lowest ever ranking since it was started in 2010.

Shahrukh Khan made minimal gains with Zero and definately not the sort you need when the volume of work is not there and with no film on the horizon it will be a downward trend as the older films go out of the system. Salman Khan remains the leader by a distance should be remain there for some time as there is not any challenge coming in 2019 but at the turn of the decade it could be different..

The rankings below are for India (January points in brackets) and completely based on opening box office numbers with holiday factors taken out and films which are technically guest roles or small releases left out. The criteria for the rankings below is here.

    1. Salman Khan: 2002 points (2056)

    2. Aamir Khan: 1140 points (1185)

    3. Ranbir Kapoor: 847 points (844)

    4. Akshay Kumar: 646 points (675)

      1. That Salman with twice as many points as Aamir is still undisputed.
In my ranking, Aamir and Salman never had so much of a gap. Salman surely will be No 1 for max duration but then the gap was never this high.

      2. Flops do not impact stars. Only one to suffer here seems to be SRK. Having Ranbir so high again suggests that previous flops are not a factor, which is wrong

      This makes this ranking bogus.

  154. Not A Single Release For Shah Rukh Khan In 2019?

A week ago, filmmaker-actor Farhan Akhtar during the trailer launch of Gully Boy, stated of making a special announcement soon. Rumours started doing the rounds as it is regarding Shah Rukh Khan’s Don 3 and after news of Khan opting out of Saare Jahaan Se Accha came in, it was almost validated that the actor has chosen Don Series over Rakesh Sharma’s biopic. Now, the filmmaker with his tweet has put an end to all the speculations.

On Wednesday, Farhan Akhtar tweeted about his reunion with maverick director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, for upcoming Toofan movie. The duo collaborated after six years, since Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Toofan is a story of a boxer.

With a tweet, the filmmaker-actor put an end to all the speculations about his collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan starrer Don 3, as Toofan seems to be his special announcement.

After Khan backed out of Saare Jahaan Se Accha, it is another sad news for SRKians as they might need to wait longer to catch their beloved actor on-screen as Farhan, who is directing Don 3, will be super busy with his preparations to portray a boxer.

Its a downward curve since then (SS in 2017 and ToH in 2018) … And no concrete plans for near future. Its going to be an uphill task for him to get back to that level of creativity. I actually feel sad for him. But all that goes up has to eventually come down.

But of the 10 films he did between RDB and Dangal, he gladly jumped at the chance of doing another film with Acharya who gave him his worst film in that phase (read D3). I think Mansoor hit the jackpot when he said Aamir is a Gem except for his fascination with BO success (now Mansoor himself is an escapist, but thats another issue) … What he needs to believe is that doing good films will get him more than expected BO success (like Dangal). Shortcuts like TOH wont do the trick for him; not when he has raised the expectations to this high level.

After TOH’s failure in China, I seriously doubt if any Indian film will do more than 10-15m in China this year. No matter how many films you release in that market. Specially when Hollywood has a good line-up to export in 2019.

Actress Deepika Padukone, who was last seen onscreen in Padmaavat, says that everything boils down to the script itself for a film to work at the box office.

Deepika was addressing the media at the cover launch of the book titled The Dot That Went for a Walk on Wednesday.

“I think it’s amazing and nice for us to say that women centric or female centric films are working at a moment like this when we are talking about female role models. Having said that, when it comes to creativity, we need to look beyond female or male,” said the actress.

One witnessed that female driven films like Hichki, Tumhari Sulu, Raazi, Piku and many others did exceptional business at the box office whereas films of big stars with big budgets bombed at the box office.

“It’s about the film. It’s a different thing that the films that the ‘Khans’ did, didn’t work but there was film like AndhaDun which was led by Ayushmann Khurrana that did wonder at the box office so I think everything boils down to the script itself. But yes, I see a trend where films that are being led by women are doing much better,” she said.

She also feels that filmmakers now are more open to making female driven films.

“We are in place today where directors are changing roles and that’s unheard of. If you have script that has male protagonist and suddenly directors are like, ‘Let me just flip that. Let me just make that female protagonist and then go to so and so with the film’ so, you hear of a film that was offered to a male actor two-three years ago and its coming back to you now with a female protagonist which is a huge achievement,” she said.

“As a creative person, I would not like to make this distinction of male driven or female driven film. I would just say that great content is what is really working right now. I think a lot of that has to do with the audience. They are ready for that. I don’t think it matters anymore who is in the movie,” said Deepika.

“Now you can’t blindly say that so and so is in the film, then let’s go and watch. I think year 2018 was clear indication of that. Right from the promo, poster all of that, I think that the audience has that pulse,” she added.

Deepika will be seen next in Meghna Gulzar’s female centric’ film titled Chhapak which is based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.

It also stars Vikrant Massey and is co-produced by Deepika herself.
