    Reminds me of Rock On except that this has political feel to it.
    Street raps and hip hops are a culture of America. Are they popular in India at street level? I have seen more in dance studios than in streets.

      The film is based on the real life story of a rapper called Divine. It’s quite real.

      Gully Boy is an upcoming 2019 Indian Hindi-language musical drama film written and directed by Zoya Akhtar. It stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. It is being co-produced by Zoya Akhtar’s Tiger Baby and Excel Entertainment productions. The film is based on the life of Divine (rapper) & Naezy, an underground rapper from Mumbai.[2][3]

    I will go a bit against the tide here. I am not too sure there is a huge grosser in here. This looks like a film for a more limited audience instead of being for the masses and having universal appeal like Simmba was.

    If this even matches the kind of business ZNMD did for Zoya Akhtar then in 2019, this may be a big winner. But I am not too sure about that.

    I feel it may rather turn out to be a Rockstar kind of smaller success.

    Ranveer, IMO, has better chances to strike big with 83 and Takht in 2020.

      Cannot disagree even though i would like Gully Boys to be a blockbuster due to the next Akshay Kumar of new generation, Ranveer Singh. A lot will depend on the music here.
      A slice of life serious movie. Budget will be key here.

    Our new King and Queen are here…but I think it will be 2020 when they confirm it together in Takht. This is inevitable IMO. Gully Boy looks so interesting with the rapper backdrop. It’s a complete take off from 8 Mile it seems which was a fascinating rags to riches story. One knockout song here please…

      I like it but the resemblance to 8 Mile is very obvious. But so glad the backdrop is earthy and rough round the ages. Ranveer is going to own this performance and rest of cast is interesting. Must watch.

        Alia is in a glowing avatar as well, playing a muslim girl. Her accent is pitch perfect. Usually such films usually do not have two main leads. This is a welcome change and a main reason why this could be big.

    If Gully Boys becomes Hit+, then Ranveer is set to become No 1 in my ranking. He has two blockbusters now – Padmaavat and Simbaa in one year which is phenomenal and enough to beat Akshay who has been giving strings of hits.

    According to reports, Ranbir Kapoor had reportedly shown interest when Zoya Akhtar was finalizing the cast of her musical film, two and a half years back. However, Ranbir was offered to play second fiddle to Ranveer, who was by that time confirmed to play the lead. Zoya was in no mood to replace Ranveer with Ranbir as there have been some indifferences between the actor and the director in the past. Reportedly, Ranbir took a step back.

    Even though Divine has been named the rapper for Gully Boy but according to Zoya its both Divine and Naezy and espcially the character story is more of Naezy and this is his short documentary which inspired Zoya to make the movie.

    I am not interested in hip-hop, but this film maybe worth a watch. Ranveer and Aliya are impressive and Zoya is a decent director. Not sure of BO though, she isnt particularly a BO friendly film-maker. Ranveer seems to be back in his Lootera form, which is always good. Can be another 100-125 cr success, hopefully.

      Apna Time Aayega, snippets of which we’ve heard in the trailer and teaser of Gully Boy, hit the Internet on Monday. Apna Time Aayega picturised on Ranveer Singh’ has poignant lyrics (written by rapper Divine and Ankur Tewari) which may make the song a youth anthem in days to come.

      Anjo- I saw the interview with Anupma Chopra of Ranvir and Alya where she asks them on one hand you sing Azadi song and on the other hand you do Jhappi with the PM , how do you reconcile both. ( what a stupid question to ask )
      Ranvir goes- I was not involved with the Azadi track, it does not feature me, and it is best you ask Zoya and others.

      Anyhow, I decided right then, I ain’t spending money to watch this propaganda filum for the commies .

          I did watch Manto and liked it . Mirzapur was too filmy . Ali Zafar and the PKP guy really pissed me off.
          Pankaj and Vikrant Massey were good, so was the Lawyer dad.
          Pankaj’s wife here was Nawaz’s wife in Manto… what a contrast and range.
          Same case with PKP Guy’s sidekick who was also Rajkumar Rao’s sidekick in Stree.
          So far my ranking is – Inside Edge, Breathe, Sacred Games, and Mirzapur .

    Gully Boy: Composer Dub Sharma Says, “When People Will See The Movie, They Will Understand The Real Context Of Azadi Song”
    Interestingly, Sharma is the same composer who had taken a leaf out of the ‘azadi’ slogans by Kanhaiya Kumar.

    “Azadi… azadi”. The constant chanting in a Gully Boy song is reminiscent of either the demand for ‘azadi’ in Kashmir or of former JNU Union president Kanhaiya Kumar’s use of the alleged anti-national ‘azadi’ slogan. The song’s composer Dub Sharma says people are open to interpret the song the way they want to, but the real context will be out when the film releases.

    Whether it is 1947 or 2019, the word ‘azadi’, which translates to freedom, has connotations that keep changing from place to place, situation to situation and person to person.

    And to represent the meaning of ‘azadi’ in the eyes of today’s youth, Dub Sharma — whose real name is Siddharth — and rapper Divine have come out with the song Azadi in the forthcoming Bollywood film Gully Boy, starring Ranveer Singh as a street rapper.

    The song’s lyrics go like: “Azadi… bhukhmari se, azadi… haan bhed bhaav se, azadi”, which take on the hunger and racism issues in the society.

    Interestingly, Sharma is the same composer who had taken a leaf out of the ‘azadi’ slogans by Kanhaiya Kumar and his supporters in 2016 to protest the 2013 hanging of Mohammed Afzal Guru — a Kashmiri separatist convicted for the 2001 Indian Parliament attack — and created a song on it three years ago.

    However, for the Azadi track in Gully Boy, he has reworked the same song, and just changed its context.

    “The song from Gully Boy is totally different. There is no particular context to it. It has nothing to do with the 2016 scenario. Through the song, we just wanted to convey what’s happening in society. When people will see the movie, they will understand the real context to it,” Sharma told IANS.

      Yeah, so Saket, I am boycotting this film I think: One, I clearly understand the contextual significance they are talking of. I am willing to give these film-makers that benefit of the doubt. But don’t you think, in a film supposed to be so good, they could have avoided parasiting on a lingering issue that’s divided the country and come up with something original? I listened to the lyrics. It is pretty much second-hand used in the song AZAADI for sensationalism.

      The irony, therefore, is hard to miss: ‘azaadi’ is now part of a film backed by several people who’ve unabashedly lauded Narendra Modi, the face of the party which relentlessly hounded these students for chanting a version of the same slogan.

      Gully Boy’s co-producer Ritesh Sidhwani applauded Modi for being the ‘first prime minister’ of India to meet a delegation from the film industry. In a tweet, he termed the December 2018 meeting ‘an honour and privilege’. The film’s stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt posted a series of photos this month with the PM, complete with gushy captions.

      One would have imagined that the makers of Gully Boy would know better than applying the Tanishq Bagchi remix template — cut, copy, dance beat paste — to a slogan with a tumultuous political trajectory, but there’s literally nothing that Bollywood can’t sanitise. One needs to look no further than Dharma Productions’ Rs 100 crore Dhadak — in which Manish Malhotra’s lehengas had more weight than Sairat’s commentary on caste violence — to figure what inspires this relegation of political engagement.

      “It’s a joke,” said feminist activist Kamla Bhasin who, after hearing it for the first time in Lahore in 1983, embraced the slogan as a powerful articulation of protest against patriarchy and socio-political hierarchies.

        Poor Zoya, the right-wing ideologues (not suggesting you are one; need to be mindful in online debates these days!) hate her for siding with the left, but the left-wing ideologues also hate her – for not being left enough. That’s a pretty damning position to be in. I heart her, for whatever it’s worth.

        Zoya has also co-opted Divine and Naezy’s Mere Gully Mein, a legitimate hit on YouTube with 15 million+ views, and picturised it on Ranveer and Sidhant. Does that count as sensationalism too? That too isn’t an original song. And, to be honest, I had never heard Dub Sharma’s original Azadi song before (still haven’t) it became a part of this album. I wasn’t even aware of Bombay’s underground rap movement before Gully Boy came along. So my appreciation isn’t based on the history preceding this film, it’s entirely based on the song (and the album’s) artistic merits.

        To answer your second point, in the 70s, there was massive political unrest against the prevailing Congress government. Bollywood, and Salim-Javed in particular, exploited that too. Why do you think the angry young man phenomenon reached a crescendo in the 70s? As luck would have it, Deewaar released in early 1975 and Indira Gandhi declared political emergency in June, 1975, a mere five months later. When Guru Dutt sang Jinhe Naaz Hai Hind Par Woh Kahaan Hain, in Pyaasa, was it considered an act of treason against the state? Whatever is present in Gully Boy is just anodyne in comparison – even the leftists see reason to rant against it. So what exactly is the reason to boycott this film?

        Moreover, there’s the example of D W Griffith’s Birth Of A Nation, an overtly racist film, that is still considered a landmark in terms of technique and storytelling. The art in the film is divorced from the politics that the film espouses, and there is no contradiction in doing so. One can enjoy the art while being repulsed by the content, or even the artist. That’s how it should be. And while I’ve given an extreme example to illustrate my point, it needs to be reiterated that Gully Boy is hardly the kind of subversive film that deserves a boycott. It’s film about angst whilst not being angst-y enough. I’m perfectly ok with that. But to boycott or not, is your personal choice – I only boycott films that I think are not worth my time!

        As a genuine film fanatic, I’m sure you will kick yourself for not watching, what looks like, a good film. I watched Zero because Rangan’s review made me think that I might regret not watching it. That last bit turned out to be untrue, but at least I was able to get rid of any perceived regrets.

          Saket, I do understand that this might be a very good film: But I am NOT willing to sign up for a movie that is so lazy that it deems fit to use a gimmick as a cry of ‘dissent’! When the film, by itself, is supposed to have under-currents of religious and class-biases woven intelligently, what’s the need to be a parasite and lean on something that’s not even required? Bachchan’s anti-establishment was not just there for the sake of it; it embodied a spirit. You CANNOT compare the intelligence or subversion of a scene that has Amitabh sitting below an image of Gandhi, sipping tea, and challenging the very concept of ‘Gandhism’ to a song that lazily tries to merge a current-affairs filth into a song that already talks of the very same freedom in a smarter manner! This reeks of ‘pandering’ and the basic OCD of having to say something, just to please a certain section of the public..

          From the reviews and opinions I have read, I think the film is as harmless as a newborn child throwing some tantrums. It is not even close to any hardhitting film like Kaala. It is just a hollywood You can do it kind of film in disguise. An underdog joining the ranks of haves and the privileged with the blessings of a white american!

      But the buzz from Berlin is what excites me. That is unfiltered praise and something that looks quite genuine.

    Then the ensemble Dil Dhadakne Do did even less in 2015 and now again has got lucky this time with Ranveer Singh / Alia Bhatt at the right time. A Ranveer Singh / Alia Bhatt today is probably not at the level of Hrithik Roshan / Katrina Kaif in 2012 but its a huge cast for a director who has not delivered a film which has been appreciated across India. The better casts could be coming as Zoya Akhtar is an industry product while the other directors in this brigade are outsiders. She is basically the last one of this brigade standing today thanks to the stars and lets see if this status remains in a week or so. If a film can today can reach a larger audience then even huge numbers are even possible with non star films as can be seen with Uri – The Surgical Strike. This started as a metro film but then spanned its wings to even score in Bihar. it will be a very interesting week at the box office.

After its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival recently, a special screening of the film was for celebrities. Partially inspired by Mumbai rappers Divine and Naezy’s rags-to-riches story, the film tells the story of Murad, a young Muslim rapper raised in the slums of Dharavi, and Safeena, his feisty girlfriend.

    Ahead of the film’s release on Valentine’s Day, international publications have already reviewed the film. Here’s a roundup of what critics are saying about Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt’s film.

    Writing for the Guardian, Peter Bradshaw noted that “Gully Boy runs on very traditional lines, and maybe comes too close to cliche, but is always engagingly dead set on entertainment.” He wrote, “The set piece and high point of the film is the uproarious video that Murad makes on the tough streets of Dharavi itself, which naturally goes viral and makes him a star.”

    Variety’s Jay Weissberg called Gully Boy ‘Zoya Akhtar’s most accomplished film to date.’ “One of the joys of Gully Boy,” he wrote, “is revelling in the chemistry between Singh and Bhatt, perfectly paired.”

    The Hollywood Reporter’s Deborah Young wrote, “Zoya Akhtar directs with flair and passion and, aided by explosive performances from a right-on cast, triumphs over the familiarity of the star-is-born storyline.” She wrote that Zoya’s ‘main asset’ in the film is Ranveer, who ‘shows a pleasingly full emotional range that extends to drama and hip-hop.”

    The reviews are promising and looks like Ranveer has another winner as does Alia. The 20 and 30 somethings are starting to pepper the box office with strong performances both critically and commercially. I doubt the older lot will compete beyond 2020.

    If the younger lot start to bank some holiday releases (they don’t need to as history has shown recently big grossers can happen without holidays), the older bunch have an issue.

      True the old guard will finally give way and age will not allow new stories to be told via them which is essential to keep the newer audience engaged. They may survive via few hugely launched nationalismlaced xenophobic outing which even Salman seems to be engaged in with TZH & Bharat but they will also get stale. By its very nature, history is always a one-sided account and escapism has limits when the real world does not match fantasy of these so called historicals.

      Technically the route SRK & Aamir are taking is risqué prone wrt the age bracket unless of course films are not their only means to an end. It requires a cent percent result which Aamir was able to achieve until now but question mark arise after TOH failure.
      They ought to have preproduction of the next film ready prior release of the film they are doing and hence I feel SRK needs to do both SJSA and Don3 and Aamir needs couple of quick follow up to TOH if he means business any more.

    Ps Not a fan of ZNMD. Haven’t seen DDD.
    Fact that Zoya was involved in writing Talaash, is enough to know she’s not a one film wonder like Farhan. She was AD in DCH too so she’s got decent credentials. Gully Boy looked fantastic from first promo.

    Ranveer Singh has emerged as the next big thing of Bollywood, owing to the mighty hits like Padmaavat and Simmba. In 2018, the 33-year-old became the highest grossing actor in a single year and only second to Salman Khan to deliver one 300 crore and one 200 crore in a year. Now, with upcoming Gully Boy, Ranveer is all set to achieve one more milestone.

    Speaking about the box office numbers, Salman Khan is unbeatable as his 3 back-to-back releases have a record collection of approx 828 crores and that too, in a span of 12 months. Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan (July 2015) amassed a lifetime total of 320.34 crores and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (November 2015) collected 207.40 crores. Wrestling-drama Sultan (July 2016) made a total of 300.45 crores.

    Ranveer Singh is on a winning spree since last year with Padmaavat (January 2018) raking a huge figure of 300.26 crores and Simmba (December 2018) collecting about 241 crores*, thus registering 541.26 crores* at the box office. Even though the numbers are staggering, surpassing Salman’s 828 crores is way out of reach but if Gully Boy work wonders at the box office (lifetime of 100 crores plus), which is highly expected, Ranveer could emerge as the only Bollywood actor to rake such a huge total number (650 crores plus) in such a short span of period (13 months), next to Salman Khan.
