On being asked about Kangana Ranaut’s claim of not getting the support of Alia Bhatt for her film Manikarnika, the latter said that she will personally apologise to the actor if she has upset her.

Kangana on Thursday claimed that the industry had ganged up against her for her “nepotism” comment but she was not afraid. The actor can be seen saying in a video interview, “one thing is for sure, I’m not going to spare anyone. Main inki waat laga dungi, ek ek ko expose karungi (I will make their lives hell, and I will expose every single one of them),” Kangana said in a video of the interaction.

  4. The film was best in US / Canada where the first week will do $800k and it could cross $1 million in that market which is pretty good especially considering how bad it is in India. There is no major competition from Hindi films this week but Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is not going to go much higher than 20 crore nett lifetime business.

    Manikarnika

The Queen Of Jhansi (Hindi) dropped 63% in week two

Overall the film is an AVERAGE fare though if it maintains a strongly over the next 2 weeks it could go a notch higher. The film has been mainly let down by business in Mumbai circuit especially Gujarat. The collections of Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi in Hindi till date are as follows.

    Week One – 56,56,00,000

    Week Two – 21,00,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 77,56,00,000 apprx

  6. The movie is under the Fox Star Studios banner and will have A R Rahman as the music composer. A lot of people are rooting for the movie and hoping that the Indian remake will be able to do justice to the original script.
Starring Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley, the love story had left everyone in tears and is still one of the most loved stories of recent times. Coming back to the Hindi version, Saif Ali Khan has been roped in to play the role of the obnoxious author Peter Van Houten. Actor Willaim Dafoe portrayed the role in the original. The director said that they had a schedule in Paris and shot there for a week. Saif only accompanied them for a few days and got along with the rest of the cast pretty well.

Finally, a few thoughts around the press screening of Gully Boy. The review will appear after the first public screening, this Saturday, but one of the things I missed is the audience energy you get in India. This is a film made for that energy. I was okay with no whistles accompanying the first appearance of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. And it was nice to not have those smoking disclaimers and an intermission. (The film is so smoothly done, I couldn’t say where the interval card would have appeared.) But the fantabulous songs, too, played out in total silence — and I kept thinking about Rock On!, where the audience transformed the theatre into a mini concert hall. May I also add that the endless cards displaying the number of tie-ins and sponsors (Rupa, Bira) looked awkward. I’m not saying it’s wrong. Film is a business, after all. But I wished the festival print, at least, had relegated these very commercial acknowledgments to the very end. Anyway, see you with the review in a few days.

  13. I think it is somewhat dull everywhere with winter chill, unusual hailstorm in Delhi turning it into Manali, underwhelming new releases etc. Amidst all this Kangana is providing entertainment everyday blasting everyone. She also wants to expose everyone. Just waiting for all those juicy revelations. She is entertainer par excellence on the screen and off the screen. There is no one like her except one Rakhi Sawant who is not on par with KR in stature. While late Parveen Babi targetted only Big B, KR is targetting Kjo and his acolytes or supporters apart from targetting Hritik Roshan, Krish and others generously. Just compare her statements with Alia Bhatt who gave such a diplomatic reply which will not please media much.

Amongst men I can think of only one or two who also give such statements. If a biopic is made about our Mamata didi, Kangana should play didi. And I will not rule out political career for Kangana. And I can visualise her as our future Prime Minister.

Now others must explain as to why they did not watch Manikarnika or atleast why they did not post something nice to give encouragement to a budding director and a fabulous star actor.
    Why?

Carry on Kangana. I am with you.

  16. Mammootty: I did not mimic YSR, I picked the soul.

    Excerpts

Mamootty stresses that it is impossible to narrate the complete history of a man in two hours. Yatra as such isn’t a biopic but an event-based film, where some important events in YSR’s life are chronicled. He adds, “In between there is primarily a ‘paada yatra’ and an episode on how he becomes chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. Yatra isn’t just about walking — it is about meeting people, answering their questions and finding solutions to their problems. Showing a person walking for two hours can be boring, the director showed him meeting different people from different strata of society. I’m not conversant with Telugu but since I have a flair for many languages, I’ve learnt it and dubbed for myself for this film. I did not mimic YSR, I just picked the soul. He is an entirely different personality. I will be a poor copy if I walk like him and talk like him. I didn’t do any research. Mahi did it and that’s enough, I just followed.”

Highlighting the similarities in languages, Mammootty says, “There are similar words in Malayalam and Telugu, around 50% of Telugu words are in Malayalam. We say ‘adbhutam’ in Telugu but pronounce it as ‘arputham’ in Malayalam. I kept pronouncing it like in Malayalam and took time to say it correctly in Telugu during dubbing.”

He has completed 38 years in the film industry and has done around 380 films. His Tamil film Peranbu released this week. Mamootty has worked in a Kannada film and acted in an English film too. He quips, “Audience are not different, they might speak a different language but emotions are same.”

After the debacle of his big budget film Thugs of Hindostan, the actor has reportedly returned to play the lead in the Gulshan Kumar biopic. The film is titled Mogul and will be made under the banner of T Series, produced by the music mogul’s son Bhushan Kumar. According to a report in Cineblitz, the casting process of the film is in its final stages and Bhushan Kumar is looking for a new director to helm the project.

The actor had walked out of the film after #MeToo allegations surfaced against director Subhash Kapoor. A source is quoted as saying, “Aamir on his part too was keen to play the music mogul and so they have now once again decided to collaborate. Of course, they will now rope in a new director and they are on the lookout. The film will roll as soon as they can finalise the director.”

IMHO, the Congress is messing up big time by trying to rake up ghost Rafael issues daily. This movie has created a hold on the public mindspace, and firmly etched a ‘Positive’ image of Modi, Doval, Parrikar et al. The Opposition should really try not to challenge them on Defence and Military issues, otherwise they WILL get hammered.

“I thought Ranveer Singh was very good in Zoya Akhtar’s last film Dil Dhadakne Do and I think they go further with that, she taps into a quiet, more thoughtful side of him. A huge chunk of his performance in Gully Boy is internal, it plays out on his face through his expressions”

“It’s the little things, he’s an intuitive, perceptive actor”

      High praise for Ranveer!

      Like

      • The heart of Gully Boy is Ranveer Singh’s intense although very quiet and internal performance — his best in a short career that started with Band Baaja Baaraat (released in late 2010). The performance is peppered with moments of insecurity, innocence, honesty, and to be recognised for the talent that is about to explode within him.

It is most rewarding to see this otherwise loud, exuberant and showy star submit his self to a director of Akhtar’s calibre. Like Vikramditya Motwane did in Lootera, Akhtar is able to mine the serious and hugely talented actor that Singh usually hides.

The praise for Ranveer’s performance is something else! Although I completely disagree with the last line quoted above.

  27. Gully Boy Movie Review: A Softer Than Expected, But Hugely Entertaining And Beautifully Made Street-Rapper Story

Rangan’s review….not so great but he still has this to say about Ranveer:

Ranveer Singh smoulders marvellously. He affects a slang that sounded ghetto enough to my non-Mumbai ears, and it’s terrific to see him demonstrate his more “sophisticated” acting side. We caught glimpses of this underplaying in Zoya’s Dil Dhadakne Do, where he was part of an ensemble, but here, he fills the film from the first frame to the last, and it’s a superb showreel for his range. (The performative art in the Bhansali films, the more straightforward masala performance in Simmba, and now this.) But I wondered how much more the actor could have been had the character’s arc been fresher, more forceful, had things come to him less easily,

      Fantastic review, as always, BR.

I will comment more after watching the film, but I do share your concerns regarding Zoya Akhtar’s sensibilities. She knows her craft well, and she knows how to make even mundane scenes more interesting. But, I’m not sure she has found her voice yet. She’s still someone who’s looking at cinematic stories from the outside. What she lacks (and filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap possess in abundance) is the ability to hit the viewer with that sucker punch. She’s sometimes too soft for her own good.

Having said that, there are clear signs that she is improving with each film. I liked Dil Dhadakne Do much more than her previous films. In many ways, it was the anti-K3G film — a big up yours to KJo’s channelling of nauseating (and fake) filthy-rich background stories. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but by adopting a satirical tone, it at least provided a semblance of balance. The film suffered on two counts: it needed more of Ranveer Singh and Shefali Shah, who was spectacular playing a very complex role. Zoya chose to focus on Priyanka Chopra instead, and her character never was that interesting to begin with. Well-intentioned messaging or not.

‘Gully Boy’ (‘Apna Time Aayega’): Film Review | Berlin 2019

Zoya Akhtar (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara) directs with flair and passion and, aided by explosive performances from a right-on cast, triumphs over the familiarity of the star-is-born storyline. Her main asset is Ranveer Singh, who broke into Bollywood with the rom com Band Baajat Baaraat and who here shows a pleasingly full emotional range that extends to drama and hip hop. With his hair combed over his eyes and noticeably muscle-bound, he is heroic but mild-mannered, rarely exceeding the sphere of believability. Lending strong backup are Alia Bhatt (Raazi) as his volatile love interest Safeena and Siddhant Chaturvedi in the role of his rap guru and pal Sher.

Dad had once seen him in a Borivali-Churchgate local, and not during the past 18 years when he was sadly out of work, but during his prime. Despite playing the villain always, he really had leading star screen presence. The only time his acting chops were tested was in Mahesh Bhatt’s Sir where his character had some nuance other than just being a gnarly henchman. RIP!

It was really heartbreaking to read that he had tweeted excitedly about having gotten a 6 minute role for the first time after an 18 year gap. Time can be so cruel, and especially in this industry.

A film like Dangal had collected around 5.75 crore nett in its fifth weekend and this film is more than double.

The film is now on a record breaking spree it is competing with the two HISTORIC hits this millennium. In weeks four and five it has beaten the figures of Bahubali – The Conclusion and the next two weeks it may beat the long standing records of Gadar – Ek Prem Katha.

The total collections of the film post the fifth weekend are 212 crore nett and the film has gone ahead of the likes of Chennai Express and Kick in the all time NETT collection list. The film is the 11th highest NETT grosser ever and it is likely to stay in this position as the tenth placed film Simmba is at 240 crore nett. The collections of Uri – The Surgical Strike are as follows.

  48. And…here’s Variety’s review:

    Berlin Film Review: ‘Gully Boy’

A mainstream rap musical served up with generous helpings of deftly written hip-hop lyrics and an appealing, largely well-woven narrative starring Ranveer Singh in all his charms.

One of the joys of “Gully Boy” is reveling in the chemistry between Singh and Bhatt, perfectly paired: Her ironic smile meets his open-faced grin and the screen lights up. Sure Singh is about 10 years older than his character, but he has the boyish charm to pull off the role, and he raps like a pro to boot. Musical numbers are expectedly energetic, many featuring words by the director’s famed writer-lyricist father Javed Akhtar that fit the message like a glove. Contemporary Indian rappers add a note of authenticity but there’s no denying who’s the star of this show.

  49. Gully Boy is a grandiose and emotional film that has flaws but ultimately lives up to its razzmatazz

It’s easy to say Ranveer Singh is a revelation but Gully Boy brings out the side of him that is quiet yet gutsy, responsible yet adventurous, morally upright yet considerate. With unkept hair, unvarnished complexion and kajal in his eyes, he is utterly convincing as the soft-spoken Murad with fire in the belly. Even his anger feels muted and calculated in a way only a sensibly self-aware young man growing up with hardships, inheriting familial burden and responsibilities, can be prone to. His quiet resilience boils over into livid retaliation when he witnesses domestic abuse in his own family.

    • I have watched The Invisible Guest (the Spanish film Badla is inspired from). I can say the Spanish film is an excellent thriller. It is absorbing and the twists really surprise you.

I do have an idea of the character Bachan is going to play. It’s a very interesting character. But I guess they are going to change a few things to accommodate Pannu’s character.

Good choice of film to re-make. They most probably have a Pink kind of winner here. If only writers from Bollywood were better inspired and creative to come up with good stories if their own

The filmmaker reportedly said that while he is getting started with ‘Womaniya’, he will be overseeing the post-production of ‘Super 30’. However, he also added that he will not be talking any credit for the work.
Reports are rife that Hrithik himself wanted Anurag to take up the post-production work of the film. Also, Anurag reportedly agreed to do the same only after Vikas consented to it.

Gully Boy review – shy slumdog rapper is a breakout star

Murad himself is likable precisely because he does not fit the template of the macho, misogynist rapper: he is diffident, hardworking, with a style in personal grooming that could almost be called metrosexual. When his dad is injured at work, and Murad must temporarily take over his job as a chauffeur, ferrying spoilt young women all over town, he does so with a kind of martyred dignity, reflecting on the injustices of class and squirrelling away his observations in his rap notebook.

Both of us would be quiet and talk every now and then between shots. But as two actors, there was a solid give and take, which worked well for our respective characters. Hopefully, people will feel that connection when they see the two of us together on screen. We have shown a real relationship. And for that to come across, both of us had to feel it. Ranveer and I are mad enough to get lost in a shot and believe that we are Murad and Safina.”

    • Why is URI still not called All Time Blockbuster? Is this tag reserved only for the highest grossers? if yes, then the entire hit/superhit/blockbuster tag will get questioned?

      • I would add Gadar/3I (for what it did in it’s time), BB2 and URI in same league. Each one is remarkable in it’s own right. Of course BB2 more than 2x for URI but what URI is doing is just amazing, no other way to put it.

  69. Vicky Kaushal, the latest sensation of Bollywood, after the blockbuster success of his latest film Uri: The Surgical Strike is on cloud 9. His fandom on social media is touching new heights but this growth always has two sides. A fan of his recently asked a question involving Salman Khan’s name and Vicky literally went speechless.

Vicky was seen in a Filmfare interview chatting about his success. He shared some hilarious incidents, one of which includes a lady fan giving him her room number. He shared how after clicking a selfie and a casual conversation, one of his lady fans gave him her room number and told him that she’s at the bar.

Vicky also added that he just rushed from there saying that he needs to go. He was shocked at the level of confidence people now-a-days have. But in a special segment, he was replying the comments made by his trolls on the social media. One of which read, “Successful hone ke baad, Salman Khan mat ban jaana” (Don’t become like Salman Khan after being successful).

    • Vicky Kaushal is definitely a fantastic actor with a gripping presence in the movies he has done to-date. He deserves all the accolades for URI and has earned all the limelight on merit.

URI box-office is definitely an indicator the nationalistic blood is soaring mighty and the josh is high with support for the army men at an all time strong. But to equate and translate this box-office success to NaMo propagandist governance is jingoistic bs of the educated class one encounters on social media on a daily basis.

If one talks to a real army person within family or friend circles, most recognize the ground reality much different than out there now and before. Just recently the widow of Sqn Ldr Abrol killed in IAF Mirage aircraft crash said in a post that while the bureaucracy enjoys its “corrupt cheese and wine,” the air warriors are given “outdated machines” to fight.

Its not that these army men were fans of previous govt and in fact defense minister Antony was anything to celebrate and kept postponing defense procurement, silly thing to do, at the cost of National Security but in contrast, the current Govt except for milking the Armed Forces by unnecessary politicizing military operations, without really caring for their welfare. OROP Implementation has led to a lot of dissatisfaction amongst the veterans, which no one addresses. The current cash crunch in the Armed Forces has reached alarming proportions. As per grapevine, TA / DA of Officers are getting impacted. Bulk of the defense budget allocations goes towards servicing Pay & Allowances of serving as well as Pension for the Veterans.

All my sympathies are with the educated lot who have willingly suspended disbelief & consider Modi to be a modern-day messiah for India. Unless they too realize that those who are voted to power should be questioned at every turn instead of being venerated in silence we as a nation will not have much of a future.

A close source has revealed to DNA, “Sunny is a mild-mannered guy, who is trying to take his career forward. His father is a fight master and the actor is only focused on his career.

However, Kartik, who won more notices than Sunny, definitely feels he has arrived and now he refuses to let the latter anywhere close to him.”

Gully Boy has seen a good advance with collections set to reach 7-7.5 crore nett pre release at the end of business today for the four day weekend. Its not a huge advance but good for this film. It is regional specific with Mumbai city and Bangalore seeing a very strong advance along with Pune. The other two big metros Delhi city and Kolkata should end up with good results by the time the advance finishes tonight.

The huge plus for the film is its Valentines Day on Thursday which gives collections a 30-40% boost and this film is a youth film with stars popular among the youth. It is this audience that propels the Valentines Day collections. The film will surprise if it finds any appreciation in the core Hindi belts but if the five metros really take to the film then these also can give a big enough number. The biggest film of these lot is Barfi! in 2012 which got 1.2 crore footfalls and that today for a metro film with all the tax changes and rises in ticket pricing that many footfalls can give a big NETT number.

The director belongs to that brigade of directors like Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bhardwaj etc that has the European style of story telling which limits the reach of the film. Most of these directors have faded as the younger stars have slowly started to find out that they cant deliver the sort of HITS they need. The director of Gully Boy Zoya Akhtar has been luckier that after a dud start with Luck By Chance got a Hrithik Roshan / Katrina Kaif at their peak with Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara(2011) but could only deliver 90 crore nett when these stars should have done 125 crore nett eyes closed at that time.

Then the ensemble Dil Dhadakne Do did even less in 2015 and now again has got lucky this time with Ranveer Singh / Alia Bhatt at the right time. A Ranveer Singh / Alia Bhatt today is probably not at the level of Hrithik Roshan / Katrina Kaif in 2012 but its a huge cast for a director who has not delivered a film which has been appreciated across India. The better casts could be coming as Zoya Akhtar is an industry product while the other directors in this brigade are outsiders. She is basically the last one of this brigade standing today thanks to the stars and lets see if this status remains in a week or so. If a film can today can reach a larger audience then even huge numbers are even possible with non star films as can be seen with Uri – The Surgical Strike. This started as a metro film but then spanned its wings to even score in Bihar. it will be a very interesting week at the box office.
