    • She’s overdoing it now to be honest. Just attempting to stay in the news by making needless and unprovoked statements ain’t any good. Manikarnika was an Average fare at best after a series of flops and she hardly has anyone willing to sign her in Hindi cinema anymore. The Jayalalitha biopic is a dicey fare. I doubt Tamil audiences would accept a North Indian Hindi cinema actress as the face of Jayalalitha.

      • She is doing drama. She has learnt few tricks from KRK it seems. She has nothing to lose here. She know the mainstream bollywood will not work with her. So she is attacking the image of bollywood which has Alia, Ranbir as easy targets because they do not retaliate. It would be interesting once Rishi Kapoor returns and defends Ranbir.

She has Jaya’s biopic, Mental hai kya and her own biopic coming. Additionally she is a good director herself.

    • Kesari Holds Very Steady On Weekdays
      Friday 29 March 2019 02.00 IST
      Box Office India Trade Network

Kesari has held very steady on the weekdays as it collected 6 crore nett on Thursday to end the week with a good total of 106 crore nett for the extended eight day first week. The drop is again under 10% on Thursday. The film had a 50% drop on Monday but that was because circuits like Mumbai, Nizam / Andhra and West Bengal had done strong business over the weekend (some areas would have been boosted by Holi) for a very North content film so were going to drop but they stabilized after the drop. The drop from Monday to Thursday is just 25% which happens many times for smaller films but the bigger films are normally down 30-40%.

Mumbai has seen very steady business over the last two days which is crucial. The film was always going to do well in East Punjab and Delhi / UP but you need support from other areas if you want to put the a good final number and with Mumbai and Central India circuits being steady on the weekdays the film is likely to do well in the long run.

Now its to be seen where the film lands up on Friday which will tell where the film can go in its lifetime business. It should remain he dominating film this weekend unless the new releases surprise.

  2. Junglee Movie-

    TOI review: 3/5/5

The film’s highlight, other than its fight against poachers who kill elephants for tusks, is Vidyut Jammwal’s brilliance as one of our finest action heroes. His action is absolutely flawless and perhaps the best in the business.

    BH Review: 2.5/5
On the whole, JUNGLEE is a clichéd revenge drama and reminiscent of the 80s and 90s action fare. The use of elephants might attract a section of audiences but in the long run, it’s bound to suffer at the ticket windows.

Notebook has an unremarkable lead pair, an underwhelming dull love story in which the actors don’t share the screen for nearly the entire duration of the narrative, some of the most ravishing views of Kashmir yet, a bunch of adorable children and a soundtrack with a few good tunes.

This is a great and very real interview. He seems pretty grounded and that’s again due to his small town background in Gwalior. This is a 2nd interview which impressed me after the Siddhant Chaturvedi / MS Sher which impresses me and hope they continue to do well. Shahrukh and Akshay are his idols whom he wishes to follow but he seems more in the Akki mold and can have a long innings….provided opposite pr gang lead by kjo do not plant fake stories….

  9. Talking to Filmfare in an interview, Alia said, “I haven’t been depressed but I’ve had bouts of anxiety. It comes and goes. It’s been happening quite a bit since the past five to six months. It’s not like an anxiety attack but I just feel low.”

Further, she said it is because of her sister Shaheen Bhatt’s book that she is aware of her condition. “She’s fought depression. I’ve read her book.”

She has admitted in an interview that she has had bouts of anxiety and has said she feels like crying for no reason at all. The Raazi actor claimed she has been facing anxiety for past 5-6 months.

She also opened up on how she deals with it. “No matter how bad it is, I just let myself feel it. Sometimes, I feel like crying for no reason. Then it passes. Initially, I’d be a little confused. I’d constantly give reasons that it’s because of work or maybe I’m tired or haven’t been able to meet anyone… The kind of personality I have, I become a little on the edge. I spoke to friends about it. I spoke to Ayan (Mukerji, director) about it, I spoke to my sister’s friend Rohan (Joshi). Everyone told me that you’ve got to realise that it will go away. What’s important is to accept it and not say that you’re fine. If you’re not feeling fine, then you should just say you’re not feeling fine.”

  13. Pranutan is expressionless and Zaheer’s got big eyes — there’s a scene where they grow so big, I feared they might fall off. But that’s about it.

Of its predominantly Kashmiri cast, the kids are simply adorable. The few times the focus is on their innocence, mischief and desire for education, Notebook becomes the film you want to see.

But Kakkar’s compulsion to showcase the passive affections between its expressionless leads insists we watch a gazillion solo shots of the two gazing into the stunning landscapes or silky sunsets one song after another.

It’s all very music video-y, where the soundtrack is lilting but the sentiment falls short.

What doesn’t is the photography. Manoj Kumar Khatoi’s camerawork is a treat for the eyes. Arresting visuals of wooden houses, poetic lakes, snug boats, chinar gardens and imposing mountains create an elegant, mystical mood.

    More photobook than notebook, this.

It is Kashmir tourism spending only a ticket’s price. Why not go for it?

  19. Kesari Holds Well On Second Friday
    Saturday 30 March 2019 02.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Kesari has held well on its second Friday as collections will cross 4 crore nett and may even 4.25 crore nett. This will take the film to 110 crore nett apprx and the hold on Friday ensures a good run for the next few weeks, The film has held in most places with North having the stronger business.

The film just has to now consolidate this hold by getting good growth on the second Saturday. The film is very similar to Total Dhamaal the only difference being that film found more appreciation in Mumbai and Gujarat while Kesasri will be North India.

Both films Kesari and Total Dhamaal are looking at around 95 crore nett from the biggest contributors North and Mumbai. Total Dhamaal has done 55 crore nett in Mumbai and 40 crore in North and Kesari will likely end up with 35 crore nett in Mumbai and 60 crore nett in North.

The two new releases could not make much of a mark with Junglee looking to be around 2.50 crore nett and Notebook not even getting to 75 lakhs nett as per early estimates.

Junglee collected 3.25- 3.50 crore nett on day one and did reasonable business in some places but generally the collections were low. Bihar was best with 20 lakhs nett business and this circuit still remains to loyal to animal films.

Films with animals in the past which may not have been huge hits across India always did big business here like Maa (1976), Main Aur Mera Haathi (1981)and Doodh Ka Karz (1990) and this might not be huge in Bihar like those films but is still far better than other circuits. It has collected more than Uri – The Surgical Strike on day one in Bihar.

The better collections are from mass circuits so huge growth maybe difficult for the film. The other release Notebook has fared poorly with collections of 60-70 lakhs nett on day one. It is three times less than Junglee which itself is not that good.

This film will find it tough going with such low collections. The collections are much lower than the last Salman Khan Production which introduced newcomers. Loveyatri released in October last year did business of 2.11 crore nett on day one.

    • The jump in the business of Kesari this weekend will suggest its overall lifetime collection .The trending today is actually better than expected (slightly higher than Total Dhamaal) hitherto .All depends on night shows ! .

    • Why only hit? I think it might go all time blockbusters with this trend.

      • Hehe. hoho..haw haw..ok now be serious.

It is another thing that someone like tonymontana or ideaunique tries to make a fairly good movie a flop. They are naive.
But why an accomplished and veteran BO expert like you fall pray to false propaganda of unknowns on the twitter. Likes of rahul varma (posted by Saket) and what not.
Why did you forget the basic rule –

WOM always wins. For every movie. For any star.

Kesari was made to look like an event film based on its trailer. The trailer was indeed fantastic and usually associated with a 200+ cr movies releasing on an Eid or Diwali. BOI predicted it to be big.

But we all knew Holi is not even among the top 7 biggest days in Bollywood. With Kesari it did really well. Then, Friday drop was minimal. Gully Boyz with better critics review fell more on Friday. (not comparing the movie but just the drop, so pls ask Saket not to jump over this and make it Gully Boyz Vs Kesari). You were the first person who corrected me saying it is fine and we did see. I accepted your suggestion because you are a wise man.

Then what happened to you with Kesari? First friday trend itself made it a hit film.

Monday drop was 50%. It should have done 10+ cr by dropping only 40%. But if it didn’t then one should have waiting for weekday trends. What’s the use of holding on Monday and falling 20% every day. Kesari stayed strong over the weekdays and 8 days clocked 105Cr. This was enough to reclaim its 50% drop on Monday. Moreover WoM was pretty obvious by then. The movie had struck the cord esp in North.

        Now why not 200 Cr?

Bhai, Akshay is not in that range. It is simply not possible. He has a ceiling. It is because of a combination of things. But he is also creating a lower ceiling. His movies cannot fall below that ceiling. His lower ceiling exists even it the movie is made at paltry cost.
Just like upper ceiling is his weakness, his lower ceiling is his strength. He is Guarantee Kumar of Hindi Film industry.

We know that unless he will do a socially taboo fillm like Padman, 100Cr is assured. His next two done at 1/4th of the cost of Bharat – Mission Mangal and Good News, will do 100+ Cr. It is certain. His lower ceiling is solid. This is why he is No 1 and industry knows this. But few traders are stuck in time wrap.

        Coming back to Kesari-

Kesari was always going to do well based on superb WoM. I always knew it will do 140-150Cr. I am certainly not surprised with its trending considering the ground level WoM.

It will be a solid HIT consolidating Akshay’s No 1 rank.

        • Well done. The house of Akshay’s has too many ceilings. No one has called Kesari a flop. Even a hit is by liberal standards. The film has steadied in collections but the bottom line is its total will be below expectations despite everything about the film being positive.

        • Delivering consistently at low levels makes u a commercially viable actor, doesn’t make u #1. Numero uno numbers are purely based on eyeballs/footfalls your films get over a period of time. Even a novice can guess Akshay’s lower popularity over the last 3 decades compared to the Khans. If profit multiple & low ceiling is the yardstick for numero uno, Ayushmaan Khurana with BKB, SMS, Andhaadhun & Badhaai Ho should be #1 right now as the roi for these films is way higher than Padman, Gold, 2.0 & Kesari.

        • Why is there a difference of precisely 0 rupees between BOI and Taran Adarsh (producer figures) for Kesari?

Why don’t you answer that for a change?

          consolidating Akshay’s No 1 rank.

Why don’t you quote just ONE, I repeat, just ONE trade expert who calls Akshay #1. Then let’s talk.

  36. Good match.

  37. I have no issues with Kesari, the film. It’s not the kind of cinema I’m interested in but that’s besides the point.

My only contention lies with BOI and the absolute crazy commentary they tend to indulge in. With Kesari they’ve gone one step further — they’ve finally made peace with producer numbers, which anyone can see are on the higher side. That they’ve done this for Kesari and not any other film is what’s completely dishonest — and reeks of desperation.

BOI were expecting Kesari to cross 200 crores and when that bridge seemed impossible to cross, they deliberately inflated numbers to make sure the film stays ahead of the other releases . Of course, Uri proved just how much real WOM matters in the end.

That is what one calls WOM — a 30x multiplier on opening day numbers!

    • URI is remarkable. Very difficult to challenge its trend. Even 3 Idiots is like 15x in comparison. But the advantage of a superstar vs. Non superstar is at play here. The probability of a big star in URI trending like that is less.

  38. Kesari Is A HIT Film
    Sunday 31 March 2019 01.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Kesari has emerged a HIT film as it grossed 6.50 crore nett on its second Saturday with growth of 55% which is more than Total Dhamaal had on the second Saturday which was a similar release. The collections are also a little higher than Total Dhamaal on the second Saturday despite having lower daily collections than that film since Monday.

The film has now grossed over 116 crore nett in nine days and is heading towards the 150 core nett mark. The film has been helped by the extended first week with a holiday which boosted the business but it still needed to hold in the second weekend as some circuits came down after the holiday period.

Kesari is a SUPER HIT in Delhi / UP and East Punjab because of the local appeal and a film which is very Punjabi in feel and on top all characters are sardaars will be more accepted in Punjab and Delhi then the rest of the country. Still the other areas have done well enough as only North India cant take a film to 150 crore nett.

At least 4-5 crores of manipulation so far.

      • The desperate attempt here is to write more against European cinema. Total Dhamaal and Kesari are merely pawns in a smeer campaign against Kashyap and co. BOI have tended to have lower totals for Akshay films vs producers but hatred for Akhtars is more after Gully Boy. Everything is being manipulated to beat Gully Boy total. A 5 city film has dominated articles on BOI this year when really URI should have been celebrated for it’s quite ridiculous performance. 47. Kesari is at 126cr after its 2nd week end (BOI). As per the likes of Taran, BOI, Kadel and Addatoday, 150cr seems to be the target. I think it will need to remain steady and make around 3cr net today to get there.

Kadel and Addatoday are claiming that 150cr makes it a hit. Kadel inferred a few days back that it was sold at 70-80cr to Indian distributors and it needs double of that to achieve hit status, i.e. 150cr. Dharma are in profit zone already with the theatrical rights and other rights sold. But a 150cr theatrical run makes it a hit with distributors earning good returns.

I am glad to see Badla doing so well. But I also read a few headlines at a few places (Koimoi for e.g.) that Badla becomes Bachan’s highest solo grosser. I guess for some people, BO reporting started only after the new century.

On the other hand, I hope I am wrong but Kalank looks like a probable expensive disaster to me. The trailers have been underwhelming for me and I hope the film is worth the money invested into it.

I doubt Hollywood movie blogs discuss the merits of box office mojo and likewise China for its numbers – it’s a given almost like the referees decision is final.

I doubt any supporter of BOI would put their money where there mouth is! I damn sure would bet they are fudging than not!

The logic here you’re implying is publicity wins!

You can see when BOI writes about the ‘clown’ who they think the winner is by the same logic or when they speak about European cinema all the time!

A ‘proper’ site has no reason to revise totals or verdicts! I believe you’re a smart guy. Most people are here. I can accept BOI is popular. But they are not the best or ‘winner’.

Anyone who has the patience to dig can show BOI is doing something unique for Kesari. Never has a film’s total been above producer. I openly accept if I’m corrected on that score. So yes other trade analysts have reported the same as BOI, one has changed too. Others are openly aware of lower numbers. Saket has posted the same.

Himesh, Bansal, Navneet, KrK etc. I don’t support any of them.

For me BOI fans run away when the truth is in front but I’m glad you Z, you are a straight talker. Some are either shy or don’t care, the latter is fine by me. But those that stand up for BOI tend to support it only when they hear nice things about their ‘star’ – not you. Others.

I could almost guarantee that I personally have given more hits on BOI website than anybody here for some 15 years! But I’ve probably been the most vocally critical person too. Me talking so much about it is no victory for anyone! BOI included!

It’s actually my loss, but I’m only losing on something I have an interest in. And I’m not going for victory! Just looking for a factual account for things.

    • I think BOI is work in progress site. It has lots of problem and needs to improve.

Nonetheless they are industry’s reference point and significantly more reliable than the next best – Producer’s total.

There are only 2 sources which are quoted / used by everyone –

      1. Producer’s total
      2. BOI total

If we compare between the two, BOI’s total, despite being biased etc, has been proven to be most reliable and referred.

All other sources are yet to get similar credibility as the two.

So BOI is better than all other sources at the moment. Till we have an alternative which is better, faster and more reliable than BOI…they will continue to get referred.

      • Usually for all stars, I have seen that the BOI is less than producers total by 3-5Cr for a hit film, 7-10 Cr for a superhit film and 0-5 Cr for Blockbusters. The bigger the hit, more accurate they are most of the time.

Then later, either Producer’s total is corrected to match with BOI’s total in most cases or industry starts using BOI’s total as the final total.

BOI has had its figure a bit higher than producer’s total in the past too. I think they explained it in Q&A that same day estimates are usually not as accurate because the final collections from interiors can increase or decrease. However still the differences have not been more than 2-3 crores.

      • jayshah Says:

Addatoday, Bollywoodarena and old indicine used producer. Who is using BOI? Which source?

Bloggers use it as it is polarized and ground for warfare!

I question the wisdom of many here, not in an insinuating way but more as in an intellectual way.

        • BOI data is used by Times of India and many others…though Taran is now quoted more prominently.

Following is an article on Boxoffice fudging

A lot of studios follow boxofficeindia.com for figures, where numbers are sometimes 20 to 25 per cent lower than what the producers claim a lot of times. A distributor, who didn’t want to be named, told TOI, “BoxofficeIndia.com has authentic numbers, most from the fraternity follow this when tracking one another’s films. But when it comes to their own films, they track the sites that show inflated numbers.”

          • I did mention Kaabil, Krish 3 and Drishyam from the list given by TOI.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan v SOS is another interesting one. When both films released, most trade sites were giving quite inflated figures for both films. BOI figures were much lower for both films.

But a couple of months back, I noticed from the daily update on films relased on particular dates on BOI that there barely was any difference between the 2 films when the figures were re-adjusted in terms of inflation etc.. There was a difference of barely a few lakhs between both films only in the end.

YRF were probably inflating more than the producers of SOS. So, while BOI probably reported the more accurate figures for JTHJ (while the likes of Taran were reporting the over-inflated numbers from the producers), BOI were also probably initially guilty of under-reporting for SOS.

          • jayshah Says:

YRF surely inflate. There should be a zero tolerance for this. Accepting 5% margin is fine for those with limited information but a higher standard is needed for rest. Who knows there might be a day when BOI get their act together and I support their numbers! Maybe when Akshay’s got a 300Cr blockbuster in 2030, Aamir releases his next in 2030, SRK gets a hit in 2030 and Salman finally beats Aamir in 2030.

          • jayshah Says:

When someone is unamed be a bit sceptical. It could be a BOI writer!

Heck I believe Saif Ali Khan followed that average Joe blogs box office column on NG!

The most mainstream trade analysts are Taran and Komal. The former will be quoted more than anyone. Even his tweets have articles made out from them. This is precisely why BOI has targeted Taran before with ‘clown’ articles. He’s their biggest threat and a bigger entity.

And no I’m not endorsing Taran either. My comment to Z from yesterday sums up my position. After years of watching X Files I have a DTA policy. Don’t Trust Anybody. I will always prefer the underdog or someone trying to build something authentic – pretty much the outsider who has little to gain or lose. The moment a rentrak loads up fully or something authentic like that BOI will be yesterdays news.

And every fan of BOI will jump ship in a split second. Eventually things will change, otherwise it’s embarrassing.

I’d take part time Saket and Krish over BOI – anyone willing to present a logical way of estimation is better than the present as they can be challenged but at least transparent.

My biggest statement – if I had the time or energy I could blow BOI away inside a year. I’ll Rabada all over them – pretty easily too.

  50. I think the 1cr difference and that too at 125cr vs 126cr does not matter much. It is an anomaly. But if there were attempt of manipulation, the difference would be much higher.

125cr or 126cr does not make much difference perception-wise. And more importantly, there is hardly anyone reliable who is disputing the 125cr total from producers. It seems the most reliable trade experts seem to be in agreement of that particular range.

It has happened a couple of time that BOI’s numbers are marginally higher or even exact to that of producers, even when the latter smelled inflation from a distance (remember a couple of Race 3 post Eid days and Thugs first day here).

I think BOI are quite usually reliable, but certainly not always. The best thing is to ignore their comments and just take their figures into account and compare with that of relatively quite reliable sources like Taran who usually quotes Producer’s totals.

There have been times when BOI’s numbers have been questionable low. For Krish 3, Drishyam, Baby, Kaabil, some of the ABJr starrers, their numbers were extremely low compared to producers. And their numbers did not not match with other trade experts who also felt the truth was somewhere more between.

It is when there is a huge difference between Producer’s and BOI’s numbers, then the truth is hard to decipher. It becomes a matter of choosing the lesser of 2 evils. Indian BO is such a mess. The quest for utmost reliability continues.

Here is what i dug out on the boxoffice numbers –

In October 2015, representatives of Indian movie exhibitors—owners or heads of companies that operate multiplexes and single-screen theatres—gathered for a lavish lunch meeting at the JW Marriott Hotel in Mumbai’s Juhu area. Every theatre owner, big or small, had been invited.

The host that day was Rentrak, a global media-measurement and research company headquartered in the United States, which had announced that it would be opening an India office in Hyderabad. Rentrak calculates, among other things, box-office figures for Hollywood and other film industries, and claims to track 95 percent of the international box office. It had chosen the entertainment-industry veteran Rajkumar Akella to head its Indian subsidiary. At the Marriott meeting, Akella was making one of the earliest of several efforts he has made over the last two years to convince exhibitors to collaborate with Rentrak India and bring accuracy and transparency to box-office measurements in the country.

But the meeting did not go as Akella had anticipated. An industry executive who was present at the meeting told me that PVR—the largest cinema chain in the country, with 469 screens to its name at the time—objected to tying up with Rentrak. However, the industry executive said, the PVR’s representatives did not give reasons for their opposition. “The undercurrent in the room was that they”—some of the exhibitors—“were reluctant to give out their numbers because they were probably fudging them,” he told me.

    • In a recent podcast with with comedy collective All India Bakchod, Shah Rukh Khan was asked about his biggest social media pet peeves. Please don’t send me the collections of my films – he implored his 23.2 million Twitter followers. “I make the films. I produce and distribute films. What the film is doing on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, inflated, deflated….. I know!” he exclaimed. He’s right. Of course he knows. As for the rest of us, not so much.

According to the trade website boxofficeindia.com, the nine-day collection of Khan’s latest film Raees is Rs 114.50 crore. Whereas koimoi.com has listed the figure as Rs 122.36 crore. It’s not just Raees. Collections of the other big film that released along with it – producer Rakesh Roshan’s Kaabil – are just as confusing. There too, boxofficeindia.com lists its 10-day collection as Rs 69.50 crore whereas koimoi.com shows Rs 97.03 crore. That’s over a Rs 20 crore difference in data.

Exaggerating box office numbers is par for the course in the movie business. In 2013 Roshan was criticised for manipulating the numbers of Krrish 3 by over Rs 15 crore – an allegation that both he and son Hrithik Roshan vehemently denied. Interestingly, Siddharth Roy Kapur, a producer and the President of The Film and Television Producers Guild of India, believes it was far worse earlier. He says, “I think compared to a decade ago the inflation of box office numbers has come down. Today there are a couple of credible sources like Box Office India that are unbiased in terms of the number they put out.” We still don’t have accurate figures, he adds, but at least we are within “ a 5% range of what the figures actually are”.

  56. BOI have inflated Kesari’s numbers by at least 6 crores.

My own numbers are closer to these figures. There is a deliberate attempt to push Kesari up to 150 crores. Only Akki fans will not see the biased reporting by BOI.

It could be because they’ve been paid to over-report. It could also be the case that the owner (purportedly a Sikh) is supporting Kesari out of faith and allegiance to his religion. Who knows?! Not that it matters in the end; fudging of numbers is fudging of numbers.

The rest of us, know the truth about that 2-bit website, or as KRK would say, a site run by 2 Rs people. Even Grade 5 students can write better articles and display more poise than the website’s owner.

    • For the record, I have never supported BOI. Ever since the NG days!

Nothing personal from my side. It’s just that the website crossed my BS threshold a long, long time ago. Right from articles pulling down Bachchan to downgrading Aamir…at the cost of promoting one’s own favourites. The history is too long to even succinctly recount.

The venom, the unadulterated trash that gets reported from BOI has crossed all bounds of decency a long time ago. They need to be called out for every single instance of box office misreporting.

      • jayshah Says:

When basic errors are present how can more complicated things be given a free pass so quickly? I’d be shocked if people like this survive in a workplace where numbers and commentary are important. Probably why they are anonymous.

  62. Shivaay Says:

So finally Sir Akshay Kumar, the global megastar would get a 150 Cr nett grosser and break his contemporary small time star Ajay D’s 4.5 year old record of 141 Cr with Singham Returns. Next in line would be the so called “extinct superstar” Hrithik Roshan’s 6 year old record of 175 Cr from Krrish 3 (his 3 Highest annual grosser record notwithstanding as Akshay has nil thus far) and then perhaps he could move on to the “fading star” Salman Khan and “substandard actor” Aamir Khan by 2025 or beyond.

    • A movie like Kesari, Sarfarosh, Wanted or Singham does wonders for the stars much more than what a Housefull 4, Dhoom3, Golmaal 4 or Race 3 would do even if it does more. Not that these are not important but it matters less.

Ajay is actually doing really well. There will be a tendency now to undermine him or pitch him Vs Akshay. I dont mind if Ajay’s gets going and becomes No 1. I think he can be and sooner.

Those who thought that kingdom belong to one kind of stars are fools.

      • I think both Akshay and Ajay are doing very well. Both had difficult period at the end of 90s. Their films were barely watchable back then. They were simply awful most of the times!

Akshay was doing films where his stunts were the highlights. Ajay was doing B Grade films where almost every time, the story was about his family being wronged and he would take revenge.

Akshay was on a terrible run before Jaanwar saved his day. Ajay had to wait longer and was very much down when the first Golmaal came up and gave him a new lease of life.

Both have done very well since then. Devgan has breached the 200cr barrier with GA. Akshay Kumar was not too far with 2.0’s 185cr and has followed it with what looks like a 150cr net grosser barely 3 months later.

Devgan is combining good projects with diverse genres. Comedy rom-com with De De Pyaar De, action thriller (Luv Ranjan/Ranbir film), historical (Tanhaji) and patriotism (Bhuj).

Akshay Kumar has good line-up as well, as Naveen regularly updates here.

They started in very early 90’s and loads of heroes have come and disappeared since then. These have gone on and survived bad phases and have become much stronger especially in the last 6-7 years.

Yes Akshay & Ajay have done well to make stars out of their careers which were sagging during the 90’s & 00’s. That does not imply they are more popular than Aamir or Salman. Aamir delivered a 375 cr grosser without a mainstream director & lead actresses in a so called European cinema format while Akshay cannot deliver a 300 cr grosser even if he does 1 film in 2 years with a mainstream director & a popular female lead. Even a 10 year old can judge whose more popular between Aamir/Salman & Akshay/Ajay. Pity that your blind faith is keeping you oblivious to the obvious reality. PS: I prefer Akshay & Ajay over any other actor barring Aamir & AB Sr. in Hindi cinema.

        • I think the one remarkable thing is that if one looks at the current top actors, 5 of them started from the 1988-1992 period and maybe only Ranbir and Ranveer are right up there with them.

It also shows the failings of the next generations of actors. The likes of Hrithik, Abhishek and Akshaye Khanna (I am big fan of these two), Vivek Oberoi, Fardeen, Bobby, Shahid, Imran have flattered to deceive after early promise.

          • Shivaay Says:

Hrithik was and remains far more popular than his contemporaries despite fading out of late. The bigger reason for his fading away is him not doing films altogether than anything else. Even till date, KNPH, KMG, D2, Krrish and Krrish 3 remain bigger blockbusters than anything Akshay, Ajay, Ranbir & Ranveer have ever delivered barring perhaps Sanju and Padmaavat.

Luka Chuppi, Badla and Captain Marvel are all HITS and have all done similar business. The race is still on as to which film finishes the biggest grosser out of the three. Captain Marvel is probably out of the race as its unlikely to reach the numbers of Luka Chuppi. Badla could chase down the figure though as it is still doing decent numbers and will still collect for another week or two.

On the costs Captain Marvel is the bigger HIT as all it has is PA and in the India market but while Luka Chuppi and Captain Marvel had similar releases of 2000 screens plus, Badla was released on just 1200 screens so it has done well to be at the same level of the other two. But then Luka Chuppi has good to decent numbers wherever released while the other two have recorded good numbers in the bigger circuits only and not done too well in the Hindi markets.

So with these things cancelling each other out it can be said that the one with the best final figures is probably the biggest out of the three at the box office in India.

Top Small Films In History: Uri – The Surgical Strike Fourth
    Thursday 04 April 2019 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Uri – The Surgical Strike is finishing its run on around 244 crore nett. It is probably the fourth biggest small – medium Hindi film of all time. The budget of the film may not be as small as some of the other films comparatively as they were very low budget films but today there has to be some sort of spend while earlier the content could take the film anywhere even without a spend.

A Jai Santoshi Maa was made with a production budget of less than 3 lakh and was released on around 15 prints for a total of 5-6 lakhs cost at time of release. Eventually in time nearly 300 prints had to be taken out and the cost of the film went to 50 lakhs apprx. The print and promotions cost of this film was eventually more than 15 times of the production budget.

The business of this film is 400 crore nett plus today in terms of adjusted NETT GROSS which is probably an unbeatable record for a small film. That film went on some sort of wave when released and a similar thing has happened. Uri – The Surgical Strike though not at the same level as Jai Santoshi Maa across the country.

The other films which make into the top ten from recent films are Tanu Weds Manu Returns in sixth place and Badhaai Ho in tenth spot. The top ten small medium films in the industry of Hindi cinema are as follows.

    1. Jai Santoshi Maa (1975) – 400 crore plus

    2. Nikaah (1982) – 275 crore plus

    3. Dosti (1964) – 250 crore plus

    4. Uri – The Surgical Strike – 244 crore apprx

    5. Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak – 185 crore apprx

6.Tanu Weds Manu Returns – 165 crore apprx

    7. Dharma (1973) – 160 crore apprx

    8. Pratighaat (1987) – 150 crore apprx

    9. Aaj Ki Awaaz (1984) – 145 crore apprx

    10. Badhaai Ho (2018) – 140 crore apprx

Alright, so got this verified from reliable sources – Presenting the economics of #Kesari:

Budget: Rs 80 cr (Excluding Akshay Fees)
Music + Digital + Satellite: Rs 65 cr
Overseas Share: Rs 9.00 cr (Exp)
India Share: Rs 75 cr (Exp)

    Total Revenue: Rs 150 cr
    Profit: Rs 70 cr

    16h16 hours ago
The profit of Rs 70 crore (Approx) will be shared by Akshay, and Karan in the ratio of 60:40, which means, Akki takes home Rs 42 cr, whereas KjO and other producers take away Rs 28 cr in addition to revenue from ancillary sources. #Kesari

production budget is 80 cr – but what is the distribution price? what will the exhibitors earn?

    • Livewire Says:

Theatrical here is much less than reported …..more than the money this was a prestige film for people involved and kjo would not waste energy for meager inflation in numbers and as per wom / reception the movie got pumped from day 1 and is a good 25-30 cr below what is being reported all across the board at this point in time. The stakes are high for kjo this year with all the big movies lined up for him and may be he was not impressed with what he saw with the final copy and drew out a strategy to minimize this damage……. But boy Kalank is looking to be a bigger disaster with all those dull wooden and fake actors going through the drama there…

In the past BOI had been putting up hard boiled numbers not giving any slack to producers but sadly corruption is ingrained within the Indian genes and even they seem brought on board for a price and hence Kesari became a outlier in terms of the hype created and that’s where BOI came with this Kesari commentary on the trailer itself and began pumping the movie and downgrading GB .

I will be abused, called names and what not here, but sensible fans will agree. There is no harm in admitting underperformance of a film, when the young guns are doing 130 and 140 crore with films like Badhai Ho, Stree, Raazi etc, you definitely expect more from the veteran’s.

          Himesh‏ @HimeshMankad Mar 27
You run down a city centric film, every single day despite the number of city centric films being equal to or rather, higher than the epic. Infact, the city film is far more profitable if you take in account the economics as well as overseas business. Credibility goes for a toss!

          Himesh‏ @HimeshMankad Mar 27
First you overhype the by calling it an epic setting sky high expectation among the fans, and then you term it a success at collections, which are not even considered a milestone in today’s time. Either don’t call it an epic or don’t call it a success. It’s simple!

          • I think Kadel said irrespective of the other than theatrical rights sold and profits made, from the economics of the film he was aware of, the film needs to make around 150cr net in its theatrical run to attain hit status. He claimed it at a time when the film was looking to make barely around 135cr.

Addatoday, BOI, Taran, Johar, Kadel, Jaiswal and now Himesh are all calling a hit at 150cr. That’s most of the trade experts we are talking about, barring the odd KRK.

I think the common feeling one gets is that the film is no doubt a hit, but more was expected from it.

          • Even KRK hasn’t called Kesari a flop. The film might be profitable, although to what extent, remains unclear. That isn’t the point either.

I think Livewire makes a valid point about how Himesh Mankad changed his tune after his initial dissent. Why did he do so? Under pressure from KJo? Nobody is scared of calling out BOI, so it can’t be them. Even Taran Adarsh isn’t gung-ho about Kesari at the moment. He is exercising caution in his daily tweets because I suspect he smells something fishy.

There appears to be this concerted effort to drag Kesari beyond the 150 crore mark. Even with the inflated figures that doesn’t seem to be happening. And no one is even talking about the overseas figures, which are going to be less than Badla’s in the end.

The whole thing reeks of a cover-up job where BOI are pushing articles each day offering a new excuse. The thing is, the same website criticized Gully Boy for barely crossing the finishing line when it’s much more profitable than Kesari, all said and done. From Holi to IPL to a heavy Punjabi flavour (when 90% of the dialogues are in Hindi!), everything is thrown around to bolster Kesari’s defence.

I’m pretty darn sure not many people are falling for it. That this has happened within weeks of the negative commentary directed at Gully Boy makes it all the more embarrassing (for BOI). Not that I expect them to display any embarrassment, or remorse, in public but that’s where social media kicks in. Fans of all kinds of stars (except Akki) are giving it to them right now. And deservedly so! In fact, I’d urge even Akki fans to join in. What’s the point of getting a manufactured total that’s going to be ridiculed by one and all? That too for some time to come.

Kesari has done huge business in Delhi city and Punjab state but the real victory for the film is the business outside these two areas. The business outside may not be record breaking and comparatively less than Delhi city and Punjab but for this film the numbers are very good.

It will do a nett of around 115-120 crore nett outside Delhi city and Punjab state and although the film is not a Punjabi film it is very close. The film cant be called niche as it has a canvas and is a larger than life story but it is very regional and despite that has managed to bring in big numbers. The trailer was very much in Hindi language but the film itself has a huge use of Punjabi and even at crucial moments which is probably to keep the film authentic as possible as all the main characters are sardaars.

The languages are pretty similar but still in places like West Bengal, Nizam / Andhra and Maharashtra the mass audience will find it hard to relate. Actually they have found it hard to relate as the second week business from these parts is mainly high end multiplexes. Despite this the film will collect over 6.50 crore nett in West Bengal and Nizam / Andhra and its these sort of numbers in these sort of areas which have made the film a HIT. It is here the film could have gone wrong box office wise despite being a good film but it managed to go through.

The Delhi / Punjab numbers were a given as that audience will understand the film better and relate to it more but these two alone cannot give you a 150 crore nett apprx lifetime total and to be around 10% less than a Hindi entertainer like Total Dhamaal outside Delhi / Punjab is a big achievement for a film which is so regional. In fact a place like West Bengal will beat Total Dhamaal and even Bihar may top it.

It can be said that the Punjabi could have easily been toned down but authenticity and detailing seems to way the period films go today as the region it is based in may not accept it if the authenticity is not there which is a huge risk.

Gadar (2001) was also based on a true story but there the second half was totally changed to create that bombastic all India mass blockbuster and it was that second half which got the sort of reception which has probably never been seen in Indian theatres till now. These changes allow you take cinematic liberties as you wish to create a mass film for a wider audience. Though whether its for better or worse you will only find out when the film releases. The Punjabi film on the story of Gadar stuck to the original story and released a few years before Gadar was a box office disaster. Last year Padmaavat was also a fictionalized true story and did big numbers though was not a Gadar.

Kesari did not go the fiction route as Gadar and stuck to the original story which kept the film regional but despite this the collections have still come in areas where the film will had less relatabilty.”

Now that KESARI is a regional Punjabi film despite 90% of the dialogues being in Hindi, let’s go ahead and claim DANGAL to be a Haryanvi film and Bajirao Mastani to be a Marathi one.

    • Yep, paraphrasing (and reversing) the line from the Joker trailer — I thought BOI was a comedy, it turned out to be a tragedy.

In Madhya Pradesh, the opposition BJP on Thursday launched an attack on Bollywood actor Salman Khan and the Congress government accusing them of hurting religious sentiments and sought registration of a case against the actor.

The Congress said the BJP had “no real issues” to raise, whereas Khan threatened to shift the shooting of his movie out of Madhya Pradesh, if such harassment continued.

Salman Khan is shooting for Dabangg 3 at Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh. During the shooting, members of the film crew kept a wooden plank on a ‘shivling’ and some of them were seen standing on it. As the picture of the crew members standing on the wooden plank went viral on social media, some local residents protested against the shooting, Maheshwar police said.

Meanwhile, the Bollywood actor told reporters at Maheshwar that there was no intention to hurt religious feelings. BJP vice-president and legislator Rameshwar Sharma claimed that since the Congress had formed the government in the state the religious sentiments of Hindus was being deliberately hurt. He also demanded that chief minister Kamal Nath should instruct the police to lodge a case against Salman Khan.

State Congress spokesperson Pankaj Chaturvedi said, “The BJP has no real issue to contest the Lok Sabha election. The then BJP government in the state hardly did any development work. That is why they are desperately looking for such issues, which creates a divide between Hindus and Muslims. But they will not succeed in their design.”

Khan said the ‘shivling’ was covered with a wooden plank to ensure that there was no disrespect to the deity by anyone. “The wooden plank was later removed. There was no intention to hurt anyone’s sentiments,” Khan said, adding that he may shift the shooting to Uttar Pradesh if the harassment continued.

some bizarre no. game around Kesari
    – Initially it was widely circulated that the production budget is 130 cr now dramatically it has come down to 80 cr! Fine – let us assume it is 80 cr
    – Next is Distribution rights (India and abroad) – so assuming that these rights were sold in 150 cr (global) – then what will the exhibitors earn if so far the nett is 133 cr (India)???
    – Producers would have money – alright with satelite, music etc. But theater owners making some paltry 5-10 cr is not a profit-making venture

  90. I would not like to get into pointless debates here. But when we claim conspiracy theories, it must at least be backed up by plausible facts.

    1. There have been times when there has been discrepancies between numbers of different trade experts. Lots of times, then numbers from either BOI or the likes of Kadel, Nahta etc. would not match with the numbers given by producers and reported by the likes of Taran. It is reasonable then that we can suspect things are wrong somewhere. In the current case, almost every respected trade expert seems to be in agreement over the figures. No discrepancy at all between the figures of Taran, BOi, Johar, Kadel, Jaiswal, Himesh, Addatoday, Koimoi, Tuteja etc.. Now if one is claiming foul play, on what is the claim based on? There should be at least a few respected trade experts claiming the numbers being reported around are over-inflated. Give me a few respected trade experts (not obscure journalists eyeing 20 minutes of fame) whose figures are much lower than the ones being quote around.

    2. Of course, I do agree that Karan Johar may have bribed all these experts or websites to quote over-inflated figures. It is not impossible. I am a Barcelona fan and I do always claim those those CL wins by Real Madrid are through bribing officials and through some conspiracy with UEFA. I can show various examples of games where officials have conspired to make Madrid win. But at least, I can back my arugment with facts and examples and incidents.

    3. We must look at the context of those tweets from Himesh. When he tweeted on the under-performance of the film, the timing of those tweets reflect everything. They were at a time when the film did not grow enough on first Saturday and Sunday and then had a 50% drop on first Monday. The trend was not good. The trend was criticised here on this blog, by the likes of Taran, Kadel, Himesh etc..It was looking like wrapping around 135cr. On this blog predictions of 135cr were being made and Jay predicted 140cr at the maximum. After that the film stabilised during the rest of the week days and put in a good 2nd week end and good second Monday. So, the experts changed tune once it looked like it could meet 150cr. If they were bribed by Dharma, why were they slating the trend in the first place? On this blog unfortunately, when trend changed, the tune hasn’t changed.

    4. One must back claims with plausible facts. When the film released, there were claims on this blog that the budget is at 130cr. When you google around, one can immediately see that there are barely a few sources (if any at all) claiming such production costs. When asked about the sources back then, someone one put in a link of a journalist asking Himesh to confirm the 130cr budget of the film. Days later, Himesh affirms from his reliable sources that the budget is at 80cr. The only other evidence provided is KRK and the latter in fact quoted a 200cr budget! And he hasn’t called the film a flop yet! On the other hand, Kadel says from the figures he is aware of, the film needs to make a theatrical run of 150cr net to make the film a hit. He even claimed it at a time when 150cr was not looking proabable at all. Addatoday, BOI, Taran, Jaiwal, Johar and Himesh are all in agreement over this. It needs 150. Surely, they are aware of the economics of the film before putting in such a benchmark since early on.

    5. I do think think BOI are rooting for the film. Usually I would tend to ignore their silly comments. But their figures match the producers figures here and also those of all the other trade experts and this has happened lots of times earlier and more regularly in recent times. Of course, there must be more transparency in BO reporting and a BO site should, I feel, only report figures and analyse instead of giving comments that make it look biased. Everytime BOI’s figures have looked fake, then I posted that they are getting it wrong. They harmed DMD with ABjr by under-reporting in intial days and then rectifying it later when the harm was already done. They under-reported for Kaabil. I showed examples of the inconsistencies from BOI then. And I am no Hrithik fan. For Krishh 3 and Bang Bang, I earlier thought the fault was all with the Roshans but when Kaabil happened, it was obvious that BOI was probably at fault as well for those earlier films by under-reporting for them. When BOI under-report, it is usually counter-balanced by other trade experts whose figures are much higher (or more rarely, much lower) and one can sense something is fishy there. With Kesari, all the major trade sources are in accord. Of course, any fan should hope for more transparency in BO reporting rather than getting into partisan politics. When Kaabil or Krissh or Bang Bang or Kaabil were being under-reported by BOI, except for Hrithik fans, all others were laughing at the Roshans while throwing BOI figures at them. When HNY’s over-inflated figures were being reported, SRK fans would use producers figures while rival fans would then jump ship for BOI. When over inflated figures were given for Thugs and Race 3 by both producer and BOI, I saw fans of Salman and Aamir laughing at claims by the likes of Kadel that the figures are over-inflated. ‘Are you down to relying on the likes of Kadel now?’ was the usual remark. Now we are down to relying on KRK here and even his figure isn’t too far off. Every respected trade expert is in agreement this time around, and we cry for foul play here!

    6. I don’t think BOI are biased in their comments in favour of Akshay Kumar. They were rooting for Kya Kool Hai Hum when it released against Airlift. They are rooting for Kesari for its genre and Northern flavour. But if one have been looking at them, then there is only one actor they root for and it is not the Khans and it is not Akshay Kumar. They root only for Sunny Deol and unfortunately for them, he is no longer as relevant as they would want him to be these days.

    7. I am not a fan of Akshay Kumar. I am only a Bachan fan. Akshay Kumar, I like his recent work but I like other actors as much or even more. I like Aamir, Abhishek, Devgan (since recently only as well), Bajpayee, Akshaye Khanna and even Salman when their respective work is good. If it were an action film, I would even prefer Sunny Deol’s Dhai Kilo ka haath over action from Akshay Kumar or Devgan. I am not even supposed to defend Akki’s cause here, but he rarely gets deserved credit here.

    8. My final take: I think the film still has some way to go before reaching 150. It is nearly at 136cr after 2 weeks. It may turn out to to be a hit at 150cr net. But generally it does seem more was expected from it, especially after 2.0. I was expecting around 170cr. Economically safe but not the super hit one was expecting after the trailer, WOM and reviews. In terms of genre post-Lagaan, BO-wise not anywhere near the level of Baahubali, Padmavat, Bajirao, somewhat like Jodha Akhbar there, a bit better than MP, much better than the likes of Manikarnika, Mohenjodaro, Mirzya, Veer, Asoka etc..

    • This is extraordinary Rahul. I think a lot what you are saying is agreeable.

I agree that BOI is rooting for Kesari which is as wrong as their commentary on Gully Boyz.

I usually don’t mind at all any of these projections/corrections etc. Because in 3 months time…story changes. Corrections happens and media unanimously speak one figure.

Bharat becomes a superhit and then all will attack Salman. Those who like him (incl yours truly) would be defending him. It is what fans do. Just the other day Saket was dissecting a flop Race 3 to say it did less. I mean even a Salman’s fan would not mind if it actually did 25Cr less.

In these discussion, sometimes we get personal indirectly. Those are never intended. Then when direct personal comments are made in reply, one feels bad. I made one or maybe two direct comment on Saket in response to his one indirect one and probably his friend’s direct ones.

But we all correct ourselves. In 3 months time, we will forget Kesari and will be talking about SOTY2 or Bharat making more/less depending on our agenda.

      Arguments will continue.

Kesari will emerge a HIT. Those who have seen the trend are already saying it. Those who want to wait and then say will also say. Truth prevails.

      • Naveen, I haven’t personally attacked you or written anything negative about Akshay.

My whole ranting has been against BOI and their biased commentary. This whole scenario playing out, with Kesari at the centre of it, is not more than a coincidence.

    • First of all, I’d like to thank you for taking the time out to reason and debate rather than resort to personal attacks. Much appreciated, Rahul.

No discrepancy at all between the figures of Taran, BOi, Johar, Kadel, Jaiswal, Himesh, Addatoday, Koimoi, Tuteja etc.. Now if one is claiming foul play, on what is the claim based on?

The no discrepancy between Taran (Producer totals) and BOI is the key, at least for me. Himesh himself posted in his earlier tweets that the first Sunday figure could not be higher than 20 crores. My own calculations, which are based on Race 3 numbers came to around 19.5 crores. The same is the case for the first Saturday numbers as well. My claim has always been that BOI have deliberately chosen the highest end of projected totals for Kesari. And when they differ from producer totals on virtually every recent film (Total Dhamaal, Gully Boy, Badla or Manikarnika), this alignment with producer totals is at least a bit suspicious, if not more.

      2. Of course, I do agree that Karan Johar may have bribed all these experts or websites to quote over-inflated figures. But at least, I can back my arugment with facts and examples and incidents.

That is a conjecture – a hypothesis. It may or may not be true. Even so, there have been controversies linked to KJo and the Box Office. The most recent one that I recall involved KRK and the clash between ADHM & Shivaay. And to summarize, all the arguments presented so far don’t rely on KJo’s corruptibility.

      4. One must back claims with plausible facts. When the film released, there were claims on this blog that the budget is at 130cr. When you google around, one can immediately see that there are barely a few sources (if any at all) claiming such production costs. Surely, they are aware of the economics of the film before putting in such a benchmark since early on.

The budget is 80 crores – excluding Akshay’s fees. This is what Himesh has tweeted. And it was I who posted the link to the 130 crore budget. Did Akki really make a deal with KJo where he would ONLY rely on profits from the theatrical business? When you add up his fees, what does the budget amount to? To be perfectly honest, Himesh’s breakdown raises more questions than it answers.

      5. I do think think BOI are rooting for the film. Usually I would tend to ignore their silly comments. But their figures match the producers figures here and also those of all the other trade experts and this has happened lots of times earlier and more regularly in recent times. Now we are down to relying on KRK here and even his figure isn’t too far off. Every respected trade expert is in agreement this time around, and we cry for foul play here!

Here is a sample of what BOI have been claiming vis-à-vis Kesari:

The film is a motion film picture in the true sense and the sort that were made were made by greats like Raj Khsola and Subhash Ghai in terms of the screenplay and story telling.
The canvas is huge which has not been seen in an Akshay Kumar especially in recent times, actually its probably never been seen in the last 25 odd years.
saying this will be the biggest Akshay Kumar grosser is belittling the film as it will go past in leaps and bounds.

Did you say rooting? Should I know post what they had to say about Gully Boy, which even according to them is going to make 10% less than Kesari in nett collections and is going to be a much higher WW grosser? Do I need to keep on reminding people how totally biased and inept their box office reporting is? Now that Kesari isn’t going past Akki’s other starrers by “leaps & bounds” it also shows how little they actually know about the box office as well.

My argument would stand (against BOI) even if they were doing this in favour of Amitabh Bachchan. The dishonesty at play needs to be called out, irrespective of who I like or dislike.

My final take – the film has under-performed with respect to expectations, particularly the ones set by BOI. It has failed in the overseas market. It may be profitable, but it’s also a classic case of a trade website having egg all over its smug face. And yeah, I’m not for one second buying the agreement between BOI and producer totals. Either one accepts producer totals for ALL films, or one sticks to a lower total and stands by it. It can’t be both. That’s what I call dishonesty.

I agree with everything except whether one should always go with producers or always lower total. Personally think it’s a judgement call. Who can trust Roshan ever now? Even I will prefer BOI here!

Also here BOI has adjusted itself to align with producers. That’s the pattern here. Egg on face for sure!

All the long comments from Rahul, you, Naveen and Sanjana make sense.

I’m going to pause before adding more. Everything that needs to be said has by you all.

Though everyone has favourites and one roots for them, a site cannot go overboard with its commentary. Then it is taken to task when it slips.

The recent onslaught on european cinema has crossed all the limits of decency. Just accept it and move on. And an attack on critics when it is a Gully Boy or a Secret Superstar is also one more problem.

And taking the help of Baahubali2 to downgrade Dangal. The same Baahubali2 is forgotten when it comes to other blockbusters like Sanju, TZH or even Padmaavat.

Badla escaped because it showed a very good trending.

Films succeed or do not succeed. That one can accept. But the motivated commentary raises temperatures.

Why are they started supporting Akshay? Because their favourite Khans failed temporarily or permanently. Akshay Kumar is their protection from the onslaught of the likes of Rajkumar Rao, Aayushman who act in the so called european kind of films. For Boi, Akshay is sort of poor man’s temporary replacement for Srk and Salman. Aamir falls more into the category of Aayushman or european cinema though far more successful. The success of european cinema is an affront to the regular masala film with all the masala elements thrown in. The multiplex audience started to look at regular masala films with some disdain while patronising a Badhaai Ho. The same multiplex audience rejected a TOH, Ek ladki ko dekha and Sonchiriya. Rejection of Ek Ladki ko and Sonchiriya must have made boi somewhat happy.

Now we are accustomed to Boi commentaries. In a perverse way, I started looking forward to them!

Fans root for their favourites and try to hit other fans which is natural and has to be accepted with a pinch of salt or grace. One cannot be forced to like X in place of Y. There are so many factors which make one like a certain star more than other stars.
