Romeo Akbar Walter Is Below The Mark
    Friday 05 April 2019 14.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Romeo Akbar Walter opened below the mark at around 10-15% which is pretty much par the course as does not have much to interest the initial crowd. The last John Abraham film Satyameva Jayate was one of the biggest shocks of last year as it took a 20 crore nett opening on a national holiday. The film had a super hit song but one huge hit song alone cant bring such a big crowd in on day one so it would have had other pluses.

The music here in this film is weak and a hit song or two could have pushed the initial but now its depending on weekend growth. The thriller genre is not best for growth but films like Badla and Andhadhun will give hope but those films are more in the suspense – thriller zone while Romeo Akbar Walter is more in the action – thriller zone. The action zone is not best for growth.

The biggest solo John Abraham openers outside Satyameva Jayate are in the 5-6 crore nett range and it remains to be seen if Romeo Akbar Walter can go higher. The evening collections and mass sectors will tell.

The other film which was supposed to release this week Modi got postponed earlier this week. Not that it was going to make much of an impact on day one anyway.

For all the ridiculous reasons being given for Kesari unable to soar high at the box office, i wonder what boi would say about Gadar, an equally Punjabi film that ran riot among the Hindi belt too. The fact remains, Kesari’s word of mouth is held back from being unanimous due to its excruciatingly slow screenplay & lazy editing that does not quite complement the film’s technical finesse regarding its flawless cinematography, camerawork & background score. Doesn’t help that the film has some gory action sequences which might put off a certain section of the audience too.

  7. Sutapa Sikdar’s heartfelt note sharing the toughest journey of their life so far reads:

“Longest year of our life . Time was never measured with pain and hope at the same time ever. While we take our baby steps back to work, to life I am submerged in prayers wishes and faith from friends relatives strangers and a connection with the universe which gives us a small chance for this new start.

It seems unbelievable never ever I realized the meaning of the word unpredictable so well never ever I could feel peoples wishes on my bones my breath my heartbeat which helped me to stay focused and kicking…

I can’t take names because there are names and there are names I don’t even know who played angels. Sorry for not being able to answer individually but I know what you mean to us.

I don’t see beyond one day and that day is today where everything seems fine. For today we go back to work.and the dance and song of life continues.

Andhadhun Scores Big In China On Friday
    Friday 05 April 2019 21.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Andhadhun should emerge a success in China as it it recorded big collections on day three of around $3.5 million. It was a national holiday in China which boosted the collections but still the film has done well with $6.5 million in three days and should end the extended five day weekend with $10 million apprx or maybe even more. There were a lot of Hindi releases last year which could not really sustain in China and the only one to go through was Hichki and the weekdays will tell how far Andhadhun can go. The apprx collections of the film till date are as follows.

    Wednesday

    Collection – $1,150,000

    Screenings – 28,800

    Thursday

    Collection – $1,800,000

    Screenings – 42,900

    Friday

    Collection -$3,450,000

The film has now grossed more than Piku which is the highest Amitabh Bachchan nett grosser in recent times where he is the central character. That film also had Deepika Padukone who was the number one female star at the time of release of Piku. the drop in collections came last week as Kesari released but this week it will again drop less than 50%. The collections of Badla till date are as follows.

    Week One – 37,79,00,000

Your earlier observation that AB was KBC in BADLA is really weird. Bachchan, being the physical figure that he is, would obviously convey the same physicality in a suited-booted avataar; be it KBC or BADLA or RANN. His performance, however, is far, far away from the KBC persona that you are talking of. If indeed ANYONE else –I mean a considerable number–NOT BIASED, felt so, then that’s a massive failure for AB as an actor.

And then there is the Mahabharata. Amitabh brings it up early in their conversation, saying he will be like the blind king Dhritarashtra and his faithful guide Sanjay, whatever Taapsee tells him is what he will believe. Taapsee responds by saying she knows the “basic storyline” but is unfamiliar with the details, which makes Amitabh laugh. Because the Mahabharata has no “basic storyline”, it is all in the details, it is a massive epic with many stories woven together. And right away an Indian audience is told to pay attention and focus, because this film is not going to go in a straight line. Like the Mahabharata, there are many views on everything that happened, many people who think they are right and could be right, from their own perspective.

        • Thanks for that link, An Jo. It is quite interesting to read, and it does make sense with respect to the gender reversal in Badla, vis-a-vis the Spanish original.

It is a clever conceit, I admit. But my problems with the film are more fundamental — barring Amitabh, I found all the other performances underwhelming. Amitabh was the lone warrior trying to hold fort when it seemed all others were there to collect their pay cheques. It’s not a bad watch, and judging by the way the film has trended, people seemed to have liked it a lot. As far as I’m concerned, I was quite disappointed by Taapsee’s performance. She couldn’t quite portray the vulnerability required in the first half. And neither could she nail the cold-blooded transformation.

Her Spanish counterpart in The Invisible Guest was just superb in portraying both character arcs. You should watch the Spanish original. I think it’s a better film, save for the mighty Bachchan!

If one goes into nuances and studies Big B, then one will definitely find Amitabh’s acting far more sophisticated and meaningful.
However i made that comment from the point of view of a common person which has seen BiG B on TV more than in cinema recently. It was uttered by the person, who i do not know, sitting next to me.
Now this might not mean in negative way because Big B in KBC is as iconic as Amjad in Sholay. But it just shows that the canvas of the movie was not bigger than a KBC set.

*If one goes into nuances and studies Big B, then one will definitely find Amitabh’s acting far more sophisticated and meaningful.*

          Here’re a couple:

          1. When he hears Sunny was still alive when the car was being dumped, he — the actor in him — lets the mask slip off his face for a few seconds and then — the actor in him AND the father within him — composes himself back and apologizes.

          2. When he calls Tapsee ‘Naina’, he uses the EXACT same words BUT with a far cooler/friendlier facial expressions than Amrita’s when she says at her first meeting with him – MEIN TUMHE NAINA BULAA SAKTI HOON? TUM MERI BETI JAISO HO.

          3. The difference between 6 and 9 and how he conveys his wry expressions are well known in the trailer; but just pointing it out.

Most importantly, the MOST challenging part for him or for the actor in that role is that he has to play DUAL roles – one of playing for Tapsee; and one of playing for the AUDIENCE. He has to carry this off very delicately never tipping over the line…this is not kid stuff..some sh!@#y ‘swagger-superstardom’ being passed off as acting these days…

There are many markers in this act of his which I can go on with, but I think these should convey the point I am trying to make..

It is a terrific performance, no doubt. I still prefer him (and the film too) in Te3n. I think that’s by far his best performance amongst the current crop of noteworthy films.

We’re living in funny times where barely Average grossers like Holiday, Raid, Jolly LLB 2, Raees, Kesari etc are being passed off as Hits/Semi Hits while Moderate Hits like Toilet, Airlift, Sonu Ki Titu etc are being termed as Super Hits/Hits while decent Hits like Chennai Express, Krrish 3, Kick, Padmaavat etc are being branded Blockbusters. Factually, most of these so called Hit films would barely have a commission earning for their distributors while the so called Blockbusters have at best run into Overflow. The realistic verdicts of 2018 based on theatrical performance and market value of films would go something like this :

    MEGA HIT : –

    SUPER HIT : Sanju

HIT : Padmaavat, Simbaa, Baaghi 2, Badhaai Ho, Stree, Raazi, Sonu Ke Titu

SEMI HIT : 2.0, Satyamev Jayate, Veere Di Wedding, Dhadak. Andhadhun, Hichki

AVERAGE : Raid, Sui Dhaaga, Kedarnath, Parmanu, 102 NO

BELOW AVERAGE : Race 3, Gold, Padman, Hate Story 4.

Hence I feel they should be called just HITS while urban metropolitan Hits like Badla, Pink, Neerja etc are more of Semi Hits in a pan India context. However, everyone has their own way of analysing. This is strictly my opinion.

I don’t much care for box-office figures but enjoy the maneuverings around a movie and all the politics surrounding. I guess social media / guys like krk come in handy to read how the project is conceived / designed and propagated….or in other words all the psychoanalysis there is more interesting than the movie itself. Kesari falls in that category and the BOI commentary on its trailer itself (first of its kind) was one such curveball with Dharma- Kjo stamp on it and I am glad it has lost the perceptional battle and the adventure has somewhat back fired with most of the double dealings out in the open. Now Akshay himself is not the hokey-pokey kind and just enjoys the financial benefits rendered by the current ‘barsaati medhaks’. His quest for monetary gains is on record, also his own admittance to his reach by comparing a Brother / Sultan in a very recent interview. Kjo has unnecessarily created this mirage with Kesari to settle his own scores.

We have seen a certain threshold afflicts standings of Akki & Ajay which is not there now for even the ‘not so young anymore’ lot like Ranbir and Ranveer. Whenever they have tried big stuff either it has failed miserably otherwise never went beyond a certain ceiling and that’s why padman, tepk, raid and drishyam type content movies are attempted to rebuild the brand value….this high and low in their career graph is visible 2 to 3 times in the 25 year period. This is the only formula which works for them and that’s why zoning is important when we rate the stars.

@Latha -“Someone could perhaps work out the economics of this film”

I think someone will reply with the right data on box office but I am sure these days hardly any movie is colossal loss like a BV or JJ…. Well established stars have an advantage on the business viability due to their branding and getting an easy pass on the ancillary recoveries. Digital, satellite and the other condiments have benefited mid level stars like Akki, Ajay etc as recoveries make them a safer proposition than hiring a new face. These guys make their own short fall in earnings by doing more volume. Now sooner than later SRK would have to get on board with this formula if he wishes to continue… but it seems his accumulated wealth / past reputation is preventing him in giving in and hence the resistance to announce his next move but seems inevitable. We don’t get much info on how digital costs / data are analyzed so numbers are thrown at random and accepted by the trade. Since these digital deals rely mostly on TV ad revenues from the corporate world plus a few subscriptions, I am presuming it is all priced back to the end users which are consumers like us.

SRK ran this formula for sometime even with all those box-office failures and never felt the need for corrective measures on content until zero/ jhms happened which have been rejected on the get go /outright. The laws of diminishing return were in place since HNY and audience faith in him had been thinning…. Like Akki and Ajay now even his zoning needs a shift and he is no more in a position to do big movies unless he piggybacks on a multi starrer or creates an unprecedented hype in casting himself with a salman , aamir, ajay or akki. The options for these old guards are again immense on that front to continue that jig for another good 5/10 years more till they finally settle down in doing a Bachchanesque pink, piku and badla kind of immateriality…….

Second, and most importantly, none of the Khans or the Kumars, Devgns etc, barring perhaps Aamir, are even capable of making such films work. They just don’t have the acting chops even after spending 30 years in the industry.

Livewire, follow Himesh Mankad’s advice, bro, and be nice (also impartial). Which superstar in Hindi cinema has ever given a slew of hits at the age of 77? You talk about shelf life? Bachchan is in his 50th year as an actor-star. FOUR National Awards, plus a jury mention, Padma Vibhushan, a sure-shot future Dada Saheb Phalke winner, perhaps even a Bharat Ratna (and if I may say so, the Bharat Ratna would be honoured, not Bachchan), the biggest pervading influence in Hindi Cinema, where directors like Anurag Kashyap to the mainstream ones like Ali Abbas Zafar, all worship him.

Yeah, that’s bigger than any data-set for the subsequent generations put together. One doesn’t even have to be a Bachchan fan to say all this. This much should be evident to even a neutral bystander.

I have already said I am not a fan of Bachchan hammy act all thru the period I mentioned and I am sure many would agree or disagree. May be the way I am tuned at this point in time a Badla, Piku etc to me are part of the same overrated cinema and reflects the same hamminess of Bachchan I detest. It does not mean others are better but my point was these movies remain immaterial to today’s debate the way movies done by superstars in future. They will have their share of immateriality…

Comparative debates are never ending and will need a lot of investment in time due to the complexity of today’s cinema. There is nothing absolute there as models have kept changing and models with changing time will barely give accurate results, given the increase in complexity of our daily lives, innovations and modes of entertainment and will at best be mere indicative in nature.

In No Entry (2005) Salman had the shortest role. You’ve already pointed out KKHH.

MPK was an accidental highest grosser. Nothing to do with Salman at all.

The mere fact that you couldn’t resist responding combatively proves the message hitting where it hurts. We shouldn’t take these movie stars personally as they do not control our lives / not our karta dharta. This is all light banter to keep the day going. There is so much trash written here on Salman 24×7 and I have never felt the need to respond or get abusive. There is a difference between putting someone on a pedestal and blind bhakti by trash talking comments on each thread. Salman standing outside this blog is pretty noticeable and his placement isn’t driven by you or me and requires no defense. Its there out in the open within the real world dynamics. There are no freebies and no one allowed an overstay past the expiry date
Whenever I get time I post alternate views, a supplemental take to an uneven offering on this blog and move on…yes it has gotten easier for me with quick fix readily available material on social media by like minded people where sometime even I am taken aback by the data links coming from (I only quote legitimate sources) Shiv Shetty who happens to be an ex-member of this blog and his family had connections to film business. Salman innings is not done yet hence I would advise you to brace for more or just ignore those posts like I do to so many others which I don’t find interesting.

To be honest I have followed filmy talks / blogs from Naachgaana time only but even within this period I have witnessed a lot of fancy worded balderdash going down the drain which is where perception of reality comes in. While reality is a fixed factor in the equation, perception of reality is a variable and no matter how well is the essay/ prose written it will never withstand the test of time.

Basically a mainstream star earns what is needed in one film today that probably the equivalent needed 3-4 films years ago. And as technology advances time spent fiddling with vfx increases. Hence why 2.0 can’t be done in the time a Padman can.

But yes taking all this into account I’m sure Salman towers above everyone in the annals of Bollywood history!

In Box office terms, it is a HIT.

Sometimes a not so appreciated film becomes a technical hit but the perception is not the same. At other times, a much appreciated film is considered bigger hit than it is technically.

For example Gully Boyz, Badla etc are superhits to blockbuster if you ask a common man.

If Raazi, Stree are SUPER HITS then please define a verdict for a 175-200 Cr mid range production. If that's a Blockbuster, it might imply Uri being an ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER and if Uri's categorized in the same range as Sholay, HAHK and Bahubali 2, well I don't consent to that. So yes, an urban niche Badla that has no audience outside of the 6 major A1 centers is nothing more than a Semi Hit imo.

        Like

    • **Please ignore my previous two comments**

      Shivaay,

Your ratings are honest and consistent. This was commonly used till 90s.

I don’t know somewhere in 2000s when Ghajini released, things changed. Ghajini was one of the costliest movie then and it did not do multiples of its cost but was hailed as All time blockbuster by Taran and BOI. There were several debates then that it should be superhit and not ATBB based on its cost. Media followed it. Ghajini was also one of those movies which getched record satellite deal.

Subsequently a new Box office theory came to play. The argument was that producers are relying less (from 90% to 60%) on theatrical business. So if they sell at price X to distributors then the movie has to do 2X in nett collection. 2X nett would give a return of 1.3X to the distributors and exhibitors (so 30% profit) while 0.7X goes to producers.

This arithmetic was arrived when multiplexes got 60-40 deal in week 1 of every movie from the distributors.

This changed the P&L of every movie.

Akshay’s movies are sold at 70% of the cost because from satellites etc it makes enough to not only make up for 30% but also give handsome profit. So what is needed is only 1.5X to be nett collection for distributors.

Prem Ratan was sold at entire cost to distributors.
Thugs was sold at entire cost.

But many Akshay movies, small cost movies are sold at 70%-95% of the cost.

This is leading to confusion on when a movie is hit. For Akshay the bar is lower than say a Salman because for the same cost to the movie, producers (in this case actors themselves) are selling at 100% of cost in case of salman and 75% of cost in case of Akshay. In this arithmetic of 4 movies a year, Akshay makes more in a year than Salman doing 1 or 2 movies a year.

So when we find that Kesari or Tubelight was made at 100 Cr cost (say for example but roughly based on media estimates), we assume that it is sold at same price to distributors. Fact is it is not. Kesari is sold at 75 Cr and Tubelight at 100 Cr. So to become a hit…Kesari needs 150Cr and Tubelight needs 200 Cr.

A kesari doing 150 Cr would reoughy give a return of 95 Cr to distributors/exhibitors on their investment of 80Cr and producers would get 55 Cr (plus 60-70 Cr from non theatrical business) giving them a profit of 25-30Cr.

However a Tubelight not making 200 Cr makes the distributors turn red. But that’s the risk distributoirs take because a Salman film on Eid making 200 Cr is very likely.

      Like

      • If Kesari is sold at 75 cr & gets 150 cr nett, the share is in the 70-75 cr range which makes it break even for the distributors. Producer & exhibitor share was never considered & nor should it be. My ratings are more from the lay man’s perspective who has nothing to do with share & profits from the film, but more about collections vis a vis “market value” of the film (100 cr being that value for Kesari & TD). Ghajini, Dabangg, Bodyguard etc for me are nothing more than HITS while RNBDJ which barely recorded 1.7 cr footfall & 80cr+ in 2008 despite having an Srk at his peak, directed by Adi Chopra is a Semi Hit.

If Total Dhamaal & Kesari are HITS then I guess Simmba would be a BLOCKBUSTER which implies Sanju should be an ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER which perhaps implies Dangal should be an ALL TIME HISTORIC BLOCKBUSTER which further implies Bahubali 2 be ALL TIME HISTORIC BLOCKBUSTER OF MAGNANIMOUS PROPORTIONS. 60. Ref. – some of the comments made on Salman vis-a-vis Amitabh.

There is a danger when one tries to pitch Salman or any other star at par or next to Amitabh. It is not that Salman is not big, He is. It is also not about giving biggest hits. That’s not the only criteria. It is beyond that.

Amitabh is untouchable. He is pinnacle of stardom and acting. Hi giving the biggest of the hits, giving hits even now and ruling the industry like a kingpin for the longest time is one part of the story. His offline humility adds to his onscreen charisma. His command over the languages (Hindi and English) along with his voice transcends all generations. His range and screen presence makes every screen look small. Fans of every star accepts this. He overcame all accusations with humility. Wo sabka baap hai.

    • Naveen there is no comparison and there shouldn’t be. I had posted this comment within the same exchange which no one took notice because the agenda is something and the hate is easily decipherable.

“Livewire : Data and numbers aside, doubting that list would be blasphemous. I still feel he remains 1-10 in any ranking of Bollywood due to the impact factor during the dominant years. Bachchan persona / reach and dominance remain unparalleled.”

On the ‘immateriality’ part thankfully Bachchan assisted validity to my comment with a series of timely tweet about no one talking about Badla success and he had to plead SRK to do something about that in jest and the exchange is endearing and healthy there and shows stars have a much better equation than us who need to argue unnecessarily and take these comments so personal.

  61. The box office has been pretty good for the first three months of the year in terms of NETT collections which have been aided by a higher share of the theatrical gross due to a lower GST rate. The year so far has seen one BLOCKBUSTER in Uri – The Surgical Strike and a five HITS with Total Dhamaal, Kesari, Gully Boy, Luka Chuppi and Badla.

Uri – The Surgical Strike had an all India share of 101 crore while the likes of Total Dhamaal and Kesari will be 75 crore at best. The problem today is that films are not opening too well and its about the pick up over the weekend and with that scenario there is always going to be a limit to business as you are not even getting remotely close to utilizing the capacity as best as possible.

The bigger films are coming in the last three quarters and the bigger films have to challenging for records especially with in terms of NETT with this GST reduction. Avengers – Endgame with set a target for those 4-5 big Hindi releases to come this year and if by the end of the year its Avengers – Endgame still at the top then that will be vert disappointing for the Hindi film industry. The top NETT grossers of the year till date are as follows.

    1. Uri – The Surgical Strike – 2,43,99,00,000 (89 days)

    2. Total – Dhamaal – 1,49,86,00,000 (48 days)

    3. Kesari – 1,43,00,00,000 apprx (21 days)

    4. Gully Boy – 1,34,17,00,000 (56 days)

    5. Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi – 90,81,00,000

    6. Luka Chuppi – 87,37,00,000 (41 days)

    7. Badla – 84,81,00,000 (34 days)

    8. Romeo Akbar Walter – 27,75,00,000 apprx (6 Days)

    9. The Accidental Prime Minister – 23,24,75,000

    10. Junglee – 22,50,00,000 (13 days)

    • If we take cricket analogy.

Kesari is a winner against Total dhamaal as it made 143 runs in 21 days against Total dhamaal’s 148 runs in 48 days!

Uri is the slowest but steadiest run getter getting 244 runs in 89 days!

      So on and so forth.

Not only this, Vikram Bhatt revealed the story details to an entertainment portal and told, “A lot of our personal information with so many details is available on social media, including Facebook, Instagram and what not. If someone wants to misuse it, he/she can and thus go on to create havoc in our lives. That’s the premise of my story, it’s very contemporary and everyone will identify with it.”

He further revealed, “To be honest, I have seen portions of her Rajan Shahi show- Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai and then I also saw Bigg Boss 11. She did a fab job in Bigg Boss 11 and there was a dramatic transformation in her from the Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai days. I was stunned. It was about fashion but not just about fashion. It was more about her body language. She had started to exude immense confidence. After seeing just two or three episodes of Bigg Boss 11, I made up mind that I need to approach Hina for my next film, which is the story of a fashion editor.”

  64. PM Narendra Modi Banned At Last Moment
    Thursday 11 April 2019 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The film PM Narendra Modi was supposed to release today (Thursday)after being postponed last week due to some censor issues but now it has been banned by the Election Commission till the elections are over. The film is being given far too much attention because the biggest fact is that not many people will watch this film.

It is ridiculous to even suggest a film of this sort can have any bearing on an election. The opposition party has been trying to get this film banned since the trailer released but they should at least watch the trailer properly and see the last thing this film can do is push an election in anybodys favour.

The audience today will not pay big bucks (which it has to due to high ticket rates) to see this sort of cinema which is a biopic of a politician with mass elements put into the film. The biopics which have worked have generally been made for the urban crowd and to their sensibilities and this film is definitely not in that mould.

The few that will watch will not even take the film seriously let alone get impacted to vote for the Prime Minister on whom the film is based on. The footfalls of this film can be 10 lakhs and lets say it does double that it still hardly makes a difference to the bigger election picture.

it is a loss to distributors and exhibitors……why such gimmick at election time? they could have released the film two months ago – good or bad – let public decide – but the timing is wrong by all means. It can harm Modi instead of helping him because from trailer, it looks like a poor film. Modi’s life is very intriguing and cant be filmed in such a hurry….

its the BJP and its supporters who’ve gone bonkers.

what desperate measures! I don’t even remember when was it when we experienced such batshit crazy foolishness by any political party. One movie after the other made to further BJP propaganda. and now channels dedicated to PM Modi!

When will Indians come out of their dream world and vote for a sane and sensible politician instead of what they believe to be a larger-than-life messiah who instead plays communal politics?

We all need to smell the coffee before it’s too late. Coz India is walking the same trajectory as North Korea! Don’t be surprised if Modi, if he comes to power, convinces Indians that we need dictatorship before the next elections. Coz everything is pointing in the same direction.
