  1. If Avengers were to have Bollywood stars…then based on the looks on the poster –

    Aamir – Hulk
    Salman – Captain America
    Akshay – Iron Man
    Thor- Vicky Kaushal
    Captain Marvel – Mrs Naveen

The excitement over End Game is because of the way all superheroes were demolished /killed by the main villain- Thanos (the biggest villain of Hollywood after Dearth Vader/star wars fame). Those who are left are not fighting the battle of their life with Thanos.

Gimme The Dark Knight anyday, but again that was more of a thriller/action franchise than superhero stuff directed by arguably the best commercial film maker of our times. Waiting for Endgame just to see how they decide to end an 11 year old long blockbuster movie franchise that’s won audiences the world over.

Its advance in metros is 3X that of Race 3.

Its advance in Tier 1 cities is 80% of Race 3’s advance in metros! But that’s not mind-boggling — this advance in Tier 1 cities is on just 1/4th the number of shows!

50 crores is a real possibility tomorrow!

  11. Kesari Hits The 150 Crore Nett Mark

    Thursday 25 April 2019 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Kesari has crossed the 150 crore nett mark in its fifth week with collections srt to be around 151 crore at the end of the fifth week. The film has crossed the business of Total Dhamaal depite having regional restictions which can be read about here (Kesari Victory). The film was a good commercial content film but due to it being overtly regional it meant that it became a metro / A centre film in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Bengal and Nizam / Andhra while in other circuits it did well in all centres.

There is a thing in the industry that these sardaar film have huge potential and it mainly comes due to the historic success of films like Gadar and Border but its not actually the case as outside these two films there have been many made but not many have actually done huge numbers. This is because outside Border and Gadar they find out it tough in the West, South and East.

There is always this talk about Akshay Kumar getting a 200 crore film especially among his fans but this number of Kesari ensures its around the corner. The volume of releases makes it harder for the real big number but with Kesari doing 150 plus then universal good commercial content will easily go above 200 crore nett as if you double the Mumbai and East business of Kesari then you are at 200 crore nett already. The bigger commercial films are going to come over the next 18 months and the dates are correct and if they are liked like Kesari then 200 crore nett will easily be crossed. The collections of Kesari till dare are as follows and its looking like a finish near 152 crore nett.

    Week One- 1,03,18,00,000 (8 Days)

    Week Two – 29,62,00,000

    Week Three – 11,37,00,000

    Week Four – 5,02,00,000

    Week Five – 1,75,00,000 apprx (6 Days)

    TOTAL – 1,50,94,00,000 apprx

Watching this tonight. Did not much like Infinity…last superhero movie which I liked was Black Panther and Wonder Woman. The story and context / milieu very impressive in both. I would have watched a bit later when things had cooled down but kids are too hyped endlessly with Easter/ Spring break in the mix. Son(12) has his own YouTube channels and has editing and posting Avengers videos for last 10 days… Daughter (7) is a Salman fan since Bajrangi Bhaijaan / Munni days so a bit of Salman connection originates from there. Son only likes Ranbir among bollywood heroes but Ranveer’s GB impressed him a lot and now wants to his next movie. His fav movie is Sanju which is a bit troubling for me considering entering the teen / drug angle there so now I need to keep an eye there….

A strong villain within the southern masala matrix is always interesting watch. Plus Prabhudeva will legitimize his masala credentials after Wanted.

“Meanwhile, director Prabhudheva has decided to finish shooting the solo parts of his villain, which is being played by South star Sudeep. To justify Sudeep’s popularity and stature, we hear that a huge entry sequence has been penned down for him and it will be shot on a big scale. A massive set of a temple, a house and a lake have been constructed at a studio in Mumbai for the film. Sudeep will shoot with Salman next month.

As per a report in a leading daily, “Sudeep plays a goon in the film and will be seen in an intense, larger-than-life face-off with the hero, Salman Khan. In this film, the villain’s track is more of a parallel lead. The film is set in the past and present and Sudeep’s character is involved in both. This time, it’s the antagonist who is the catalyst in the story.”

I am all for such spectacular cinema but the dynamics are simply not in place for Bollywood and it will never be able to match the budgets of a Hollywood movie….they are having the first-mover advantage worldwide with a clear competitive advantage through their resources. Bollywood at least puts up a decent fight compared to rest of the world who have given up on this front. Endgame could very likely be the costliest film ever. Avengers: Endgame $350–400 million plus publicity they say is additional 200mil

    • Budget is not an excuse IMO. Babubali proves you don’t need $400mm to make 1000Cr across India. I accept that film is an exceptional case but I knew Bollywood would throw money at big projects post that film. Only Bhansali, Hirani, Gowariker and to some degree Barjatya spend time on scripts. Very few stars are interested in the long game. There is room for Akshay’s model but eventually that’s a crash and burn exercise. You need proper storytelling to begin with. Bollywood is getting its act together with smaller movies but big projects are falling prey to chasing Bahubali.

Just attempt to tell a story. Start middle and end. We do it every night with children. Star fees, high ticket prices, lack of screens etc are all factors but they are being debunked by Bahubali and Avengers. Even holidays do not matter.

  26. More so this type of cinema has nothing to do with stars and it’s more of a director / studio vision which is a time consuming process…..We are still waiting for Avatar 2 since 2009.

Very rarely we see the patience of a Rajmouli within Bollywood to give it the thrust needed. Most are driven by quick cash. YRF had the resources at one time but lost track since these business are driven by one trick horse and the greed is unlimited and no scope to share the wealth / credit.

trouble is Bollywood doesn’t even try for a grand story. when films like bahubali perform well, hindi cinema directors go for a similar genre (magnum opus) without working hard on the story. Kalank is a recent example.

They all want to get rich quick and focus on breaking the box office barriers. We have the vision lacking.

Tumbbad has been a very good effort in grand filmmaking, at a much lower cost. but how many examples do we have?

It’s a good thing that these small/medium budget films are coming up with decent content and are making good enough money as well.

But talk about big budget extravaganzas and what do we have? Sultan? Bharat? Tiger Zinda Hai? Thugs of Hindostan? These are the recent examples of which we consider “event” films. No doubt South cinema and Hollywood are walking all over us. Even the likes of Big B couldn’t help but say “please don’t avoid Hollywood films, spend money on Hindi cinema.”

  28. The access to worldwide web / hi-tech has given Bollywood a bit of a technological push and movies seem slick but stories telling has stagnated for various reasons. Concerted effort is required to make very Indian stories which can connect to wider Indian audience. It’s a great time for small movies due to cheaper technology (green screen et al to shoot within a studio) and there are more avenues for return in form of digital, cable, overseas rights. But the most important thing is that the stories remain very Indian at heart. ‘Savdhaan India’ is bubbling with new real life story with each episode and its surprising why these are no tapped to make interesting movies in the Andhadhun mold….

  29. Kalank never had a chance with a ‘diminutive’ Varun doing what he was as a blacksmith pumping iron…… Kjo did a number on him by making him do that movie and now he is confined to the small, light hero tag and very few will give him a chance to step out until he ages a bit / rebuilds his graph. Ranveer and Ranbir did well via a SLB and Hirani who took time in projecting them correctly to break out to big league. TOH was a farce and YRF simply tried to cash in on aamir ….the VFX there was so tacky, I could not even stand that movie on TV for more than 15mins. The sets were so lame and even TV serials come with better / grander /realistic sets these days.

So trust is a big thing and one never not sure of the intent of his own team bts….Aamir must have learnt a very nice lesson…no wonder he sits on a movie for 2-3 years……. :-0

New York (CNN Business)”Avengers: Endgame” made $60 million at the domestic box office for its preview showings on Thursday night. That makes it the biggest opening night in history.

That surpasses the record held by another Disney (DIS) property “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which made $57 million on its opening night in 2015, according to Comscore (SCOR). “Endgame’s” prequel “Avengers: Infinity War” made $39 million for its preview showings last year before going on to have the highest-grossing opening weekend in history at $258 million. “Endgame” is on track to fly by that number.

Analysts have said that “Endgame” could make north of $260 million in North America and more than $800 million globally this weekend — both of which would be box office records. Some analysts have said the film could even nab a $300 million opening domestically this weekend.

The film is already off to a big start overseas, raking in $305 million since opening internationally on Wednesday. “Endgame” had the biggest opening day in China, the world’s second largest movie market.

“Endgame” is the epic finale to the superhero studio’s decade long series of films. All together Marvel Studios has made more than $18.7 billion worldwide.Fandango said Thursday that “Endgame” is the biggest preseller in its history.

Movie chains are running around the clock and adding showtimes to meet the demand of moviegoers. AMC (AMC) Theatres announced on Monday that seventeen locations will stay open for 72 straight hours from Thursday night through Sunday.

“Endgame” could also help save Hollywood from a sluggish year. The domestic box office is down about 16% compared to last year. The film, which clocks in at three hours, has garnered critical acclaim. It holds a 96% score on review site, Rotten Tomatoes.

Maybe Takht will have it in terms of opening but I am 100% certain that it will be a bad film and crash after the weekend. Bharat might get a bumper opening because of Eid, but it looks like a best case scenario of 350 crores.

I think the next movie that might have huge hype (but not at the level of Baahubali 2 or Endgame) is Prabhas’ Saaho tbh. Just because it’s his next film after Baahubali 2.

  34. The importance of positive word of mouth is often neglected in this rat race for huge initials. Dangal despite being an urban multiplex appealing film with a niche narrative still stands tall as India’s highest grossing film worldwide and Hindi cinema’s highest domestic grossing film largely thanks to a unanimously positive word of mouth. Imagine if an Aamir Khan starrer has a Dangal level word of mouth, but with a universally appealing theme. It can surely cross 500 Cr in the domestic market alone without the padding of a franchise factor like Bahubali 2 had. Similarly is even an Akshay starrer with a 20 Cr initial gets an Uri like word of mouth, there is no stopping it from crossing 500 Cr. I’m not getting into a Salman film with a Dangal or Uri like word of mouth because that’s highly unlikely although if Bharat manages a Bajrangi like word of mouth, it surely would cross 400 Cr domestic. We often neglect the fact that while Hindi belt audiences have accepted southern films with open arms (be it Bahubali or 2.0) the vice versa has never happened. Even the regional Tamil & Telugu version of a legendary film like Dangal hardly received any screens or anticipation. However, the hostility from the southern audiences has somewhat been compensated by the welcoming from an unexpected quarter in China. Yet, Chinese box office has its own restrictions and mainly small budgeted slice of life films like Secret Superstar, Hindi Medium and now Andhadhun seem to find more favor there than a Bahubali or the yet to be released 2.0. For Hindi cinema to maintain its supremacy it has to first regain the faith of its own core target audience and think beyond just the A & A1 centers. Need to produce more universally appealing content like Bajrangi & Padmaavat which can not only find an audience in the A & A1 centers, but also in the B & C centers. Beyond the domestic audience, it might need to milk the Chinese box office to really escalate its potential. Despite all this talk of Hindi cinema losing its core audience, 7 of the top 10 Indian films worldwide are still out of Bollywood with one of the remaining 3 being 2.0, which is half a Bollywood film in every context thanks to Akshay’s antagonist act which pretty much ensured double the normal collections in the Hindi dubbed format. Its time for retrospection instead of panic and knee jerk reaction for the makers of Hindi cinema.

  36. We have all sorts of audience who are mostly swayed by wom and whatsapp. A wannabe Total Dhamaal is an easy hit and a well made Tumbbad is appreciated. And dedicated fans ensure a hit sometimes. So there is no standard rules for a conscientious film maker except to go ahead irrespective of audience approval. If he or she is lucky, he or she will get audience approval. Otherwise nothing is lost because the film is an artistic product and not a commercial product for the makers.
And the likes of Kjo and Rohit Shetty start trying all the tricks to get boxoffice hit.
Endgame has just started. Will B abd C centres accept the way they did for Baahubali 2? Baahubali 2 was a success in A,B and C centres and even Rajamouli and Prabhaas will not be able to repeat that success.
Aamir Khan fell when he started 70% profit game based on his presence in a movie. That backfired badly. Now he is back to produce films with his money. His fans have not forgiven him fully. Even his chinese fans did not go for Toh. Lesson. Dont play tapori rules at your age.
Salman is repeating himself whether it is Bharat or Dabangg 3. His dance moves are so laboured with his too muscled a body.

The early collections of Avengers – Endgame are coming in and the film could collect a huge 50 crore net on day one but a lot will depend on the final numbers in Mumbai and South. The expected collections are 14 crore nett in Mumbai and 16 crore nett in South and this should take the film to 50 crore nett but it remains to be seen where the final collections come in tomorrow morning.

The film will get a reduction of shows in Mumbai on day two as there was a verbal agreement to allow the film to be screened outside normal hours but as no official permission has been granted the shows which are before 6am and after 11pm will have to be cancelled.

Senior Left leader Sitaram Yechury too questioned the need of keeping the gifts from Mamata Banerjee a hush-hush and wondered why PM Modi spoke about it only now.

“Why is it a secret that has to be told by PM Modi publicly now? Did you hear earlier ever about didi choosingkurtas for Modi? Why is this secrecy? This is a classic example of kushti and dosti…Is there a gameplan?” said Sitaram Yechury.

A bitter exchange over sweets and kurtas started between the Bengal Chief Minister and the PM Modi hours after the interview to Akshay Kumar. Mamata Banerjee responded to the Prime Minister’s comment saying, it was Bengal’s culture to welcome guests with sweets and gifts. “He will still get rossogollas but not a single vote,” she said.

Later the Chief Minister sharpened her mild retort and said, “I will send him rossogollas made of mud and stone chips – just like cashew nuts and raisins are used in laddoos. One bite and it will break the teeth. That’s the kind of mithai I will send,” Mamata Banerjee said at a campaign rally in Asansol, where PM Modi had mocked her on Tuesday saying the “PM’s chair is not for auction”.

Avengers – Endgame collected a phenomenal 52 crore nett apprx across India on day one even though it released on just 1700 theatres. The collections are the third highest ever in terms of NETT collection after Bahubali – The Conclusion and 2.0 and in terms of GROSS it could be fourth as the Thugs Of Hindostan number with all languages could be a little higher. But basically taking out the holiday factor the top three opening days across India are non Hindi films.

The film has not set any circuit records though Mumbai and Delhi / UP have come very close and the latter could make it when the final collections come. the film has put up phenomenal numbers wherever released. some numbers may look a little lower compared to other films in some circuits but that is because of the release. The South has also clocked huge numbers with with all Tamil Nadu, Andhra and Mysore all going over with the Mysore number coming from just 70 theatres.

The Hindi belt is also huge with all mass circuits recording huge occupancy and challenging the biggest Hindi films despite a release which is on less than half the cinemas. The film just breaks the myth that it is about screens, collections are not about adding screens to your release its about having an audience. Only when you have an audience then screens can help. This film proves that a 40 crore nett number can be done on 2000 screens when hardly any film is doing it releasing on 4000 screens.

The film is a huge advance going forward over the weekend and may hit a weekend number in the range of 160-165 crore nett which is mind boggling and far ahead of any Hindi film till date.

LOS ANGELES, UNITED STATES: A California man who deliberately drove into a crowd of people, injuring eight, did so because he thought they were Muslim, police said Friday.
The driver, 34-year-old Isaiah Peoples, reportedly targeted the family solely on their appearance, according to police in Sunnyvale, near San Francisco, who are now treating the case as a “hate crime”.

“There is new evidence that Peoples intentionally targeted victims based on their race and belief that they were Muslim,” said Sunnyvale Public Security in a statement.

According to local media, three members of the same family are among the eight pedestrians injured Tuesday — a father and his son and daughter.

The nationality and religion of the family have not been released.

A lawyer for Peoples said the incident “was clearly the result of a mental disorder”, and he would seek psychiatric treatment for his client — who he described as a military veteran possibly suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.

    So….Two things.
1-Biggest weekend for a hindi film is 120 cr for Sanju and Bahubali 2 first day was 122 cr
2- Endgame did 53 cr from just 2000 screens.

    Let that sink in.

    Like

    • Comparisons need to be like for like. No point comparing apples to oranges. Bahubali 2 did 122 Cr in all versions taken together from over 7000 screens. Sanju is an outright Hindi film with no audience in the south barring Bangalore & Hyderabad. Even dubbed Telugu & Tamil versions of Hindi films hardly find any screens in the south even if they’re huge grossers like Dangal & Padmaavat. A like for Like comparison is Bahubali 2’s Hindi version collection vis a vis other Hindi films in the core Hindi circuits. Or an Avengers English+Hindi version collection vs Hindi films in the core Bollywood circuits of Mumbai, Delhi/UP, East Punjab, CP,CI and Rajasthan. Its a known fact that the market for English films in the south (barring Bangalore & Hyderabad city) is far wider than any Hindi film. If a genuine all format, all version comparison needs to be made, a like for like would be global worldwide numbers where a small urban multiplex film like Dangal is India’s highest grossing global film ahead of the tacky vfx laden Bahubali 2 (masquerading as India’s answer to 300 when factually part 1 was a far superior film in every department). Fact# 2, sequels and franchises not withstanding, 17 of the top 20 highest global grossers worldwide are out of Bollywood with one of the remaining 3 having a huge Bollywood factor too in the form of a chief antagonist while the other 2 are from a single Bahubali franchise.

Along with this, Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor starrer Good News has also been delayed. Both the movies being under Dharma Productions’ banner, the makers decided to reveal this rather ‘not-so-good’ news to the fans at the same time. Ayan Mukherji posted a note mentioning the technical difficulties in releasing the movie on Christmas.

The VFX artists of the film need more time and hence they have now opted for a summer 2020 release date. The makers are hoping they will make up for the delayed release by giving a super hit blockbuster. Since the movie is based on science fiction and mythical characters, the audience’s expectations are super high with this one. As for Akshay and Kareena’s film, the makers have moved the release date from 6th September to 27th December, this year. The fans are surely going to be disappointed because the plots of both the movies were extremely unique and were highly anticipated. Good News marks the reunion of Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor Khan on screen after a decade.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Avengers – Endgame had another huge day as it collected around 51 crore nett plus. There is not much space for growth and also by Friday evening the peak shows at most places were booked advance. The collections of the film will bounce along over the weekend in a similar range and it will be Monday that will be interesting as to how big it will due to the huge advance numbers already there for the film.

When a film truly opens like a craze then its very unlikely that it can grow much as the first day audience. This happened with Bahubali – The Conclusion and now has happened with this film. It also used to happen with Hindi films but in the last few years unless the first day is a big holiday. Avengers – Endgame has collected around 104 crore nett in two days and the weekend will be 155-160 crore nett and thrn as mentioned above its about how big that Monday is. The collections of Avengers – Endgame are as follows.

    Friday – 53,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 51,00,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 1,04,00,00,000 apprx

  59. Avengers Endgame Has A Historic Weekend
    Monday 29 April 2019 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Avengers – Endgame had a historic weekend as it collected around 157 crore nett plus in its first weekend. The collections went back to its first day level on Sunday. Its is a non Bahubali – The Conclusion record as the three day figures are only behind that film on all formats for the first three days. It has gone way past any Hindi film where the record is 119 crore nett in 3 days set by Sanju last year.

The film has collected 67% more than the previous Avengers film Infinity War which did 94 crore nett in its first three days. That was also a record for a Hollywood film which has been surpassed by leaps and bounds.

There are many cinemas in Mumbai city which will open late on Monday due to elections and the film has a huge ratio of collections from Mumbai city so that could affect the Monday numbers. Normally when cinemas open late they cover for the earlier shows as its like a holiday but this film has very high occupancy so it will find it harder to cover. there is no doubt that the film is going to hold and its about what the level will be. That was also a record for a Hollywood film which has been surpassed by leaps and bounds. The collections of Avengers – Endgame are as follows.

    Friday – 53,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 51,25,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 53,00,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 1,57,25,00,000 apprx

The film may have set a weekend records in a couple of teh Hindi circuits but its photo finishes so it will be on the final figures.

  61. Disha Patani has rekindled Bollywood’s romance with the yellow sari through the Slow Motion song from Salman Khan’s ‘Bharat’. But it has left many asking “Where’s the sari?”
In the video of the peppy number by Vishal and Shekhar featuring Nakash Aziz and Shreya Ghoshal, Disha is seen matching her dance moves along with Salman.
But it is her sensual yellow sari with a ‘pallu’ twisted like a rope and thrown over her shoulder, that has caught attention. The song garnered over 24 million views on YouTube in just 24 hours.
Award-winning textile designer Gaurang Shah feels the essence of the sari has got completely diluted.
“Well, everyone one has a choice to reinvent, but that doesn’t mean you do away with fundamental essence that made sari a beautiful attire for generations. It is a celebration of our cultural legacy and heritage. A sari is a sari. You must drape it in a manner that retains its magnificent character,” Shah said.
Designer Varija Bajaj called it a poor rendition in the name of reinventing ways to drape the six-yard wonder.
“Designers all across are working of reinventing the classic saris into sari gowns, lehenga saris, saris with jeans and some of them are extremely beautiful inventions,” said Bajaj.
“There is a very thin line between a beautiful innovation and a tragic disaster when it comes to designers reinventing a sari. A poor rendition not only looks distasteful, but also kills the very essence of feminism in a sari, and I guess that forms the majority chunk of such reinventions,” she added.
Ace designer Ritu Kumar feels the stylist hasn’t broken “any norm” with the look.
“A sari is an unstitched garment and it is worn in different ways in different parts of the country. A sari can come in nine yards to three yards. There is no standardisation of a sari and there never has been,” said Kumar, adding that there is no “traditional way or a hard and fast rule to wear a sari”.
“It happens to be the most provocative and versatile garment in the world. It is somebody’s choice on how you want to wear it,” she added.
Textile revivalist Madhu Jain feels there should be room for innovation, but the traditional way is here to stay.
“Saris have been reinvented for years now. However, while trends come and go, the traditional drapes will remain forever. And even there, each state has its own drape. Think of Gujarat’s seedha pallu sari, Maharashtra’s Nauvari drape, Bengal’s Athpourey style, Andhra Pradesh’s Kappulu drape, and so on,” Jain said.
For many, Disha’s avatar turned out to be a nostalgic trip to Raveena Tandon’s iconic look from 1990’s song ‘Tip tip barsa paani’ or Madhuri Dixit’s ‘Dhak dhak’ look. And for some, it became a joke with memes about the look going viral.

“It’s an extremely important day for all of us. It is very important for each and every individual to be part of this. Both Kiran and I have done to do this…. There should be love, prosperity and progress in the country. People should keep this in mind and come out to vote,” he said, after casting his vote.

Aamir Khan also had a bit of election humour for those who had gathered around to catch a glimpse of the ‘Rang De Basanti’ star as he went in to vote.

“Once the President of America went on a morning walk. Someone asked him, ‘What do you do?’ He replied ‘I am the President of America’. Then he asked the man, ‘What do you do?’ The man said, ‘I elect the President of America’,” he said, drawing chuckles from the crowd.

The six Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai are voting along with 11 others in Maharashtra in the fourth round of polling for the seven-phase general elections that end on May 19. Results are due by May 23.

There are several high-profile contenders in business and entertainment capital this time including Aamir Khan’s ‘Rangeela’ co-star Urmila Mantondkar who is the Congress candidate from the Mumbai North seat.

Other closely-watched contests include BJP’s Poonam Mahajan versus Congress’s Priya Dutt in Mumbai North-Central and Congress leader Milind Deora’s campaign against Sena’s sitting lawmaker Arvind Sawant in Mumbai South.

The Congress and its ally, Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress party or the NCP, are trying to wrest the six seats from the BJP-Shiv Sena combine. Last time, the Sena won three seats and the BJP three.

Besides Aamir Khan, several Bollywood celebrities including Rekha, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Shankar Mahadevan, Paresh Rawal and Ravi Kishan also were among early voters on Monday.

The bollywood lesbian love story Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga (now on netflix) has had its criticisms – not enough depth to the love story, distracted by subplots, rather preachy – and while these comments are valid, I feel the film is aiming at something far deeper.

It’s deliberately set in the milieu of the 90’s love stories, the punjabi yash chopra kind of land, where a woman is only validated when a man finds her attractive (ie the iconic Kajol sari moment in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai). The writer does something radical by placing the central character in amidst of all this rooted bollywoodian patriarchy. And then has more fun with the meta narrative by staging a play within the film!

Worth a one time watch for sure with sweet performances from Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla.

It was a very elaborate set. The artistes from Punjab had to be fully groomed so they started at 4 am and by 10 am they were ready with makeup, hair and costume and ready to shoot. That was why we shot in Punjab as they needed to look from that geographical setup. It was very difficult but it’s the soul of the film as it begins from there and I am very happy with the way it has shaped out.”

Endgame beyond the lackluster screenplay & uninspiring script is a completely illogical movie at best. Thanos went to great limits to obtain the infinity stones, even undergoes personal loss in the process & yet without a thought destroys the stones once his motive of wiping out half the universe is acheived! So this act rules him OUT as a megalomaniac wanting SUPREME power on the lines of a Voldemort or Ras al Ghul. And if he ain’t any kind of supreme power seeking megalomaniac, why would he be foolish enough to go to the extent to which he did to obtain the stones in the first place? Second, Dr Strange who saw 1 in 14 million possibilities of eliminating Thanos, thereby making him the most important link is given ZERO scope through the film as are many other popular Avengers like Black Panther. Hawkeye & Ant man got their moments thanks to their absence in the previous film. Endgame is ultimately pure fan service for Iron man & Captain America fanboys. Every other Avenger as well as Thanos have been relegated to the sidelines or made to look foolish. Even Black Widow’s heroic death is underwhelming & shortchanged.

Interesting Read on the impact to domestic box-office worldwide –

China Box Office: ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Crushes Local Records With $330.5M Opening

“…Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame earned a colossal $330.5 million during its five-day debut in China, crushing opening-weekend records for any local or Hollywood film.

The huge China showing mirrors the astounding numbers that are being generated by Endgame in virtually every other market where it is currently showing. In North America, the film opened to a record-smashing $350 million (topping Infinity War’s prior mark of $257.6 million). Overseas, Endgame’s debut hit a record high of $859 million — of which China comprised an incredible 38.5 percent.

Altogether, Endgame posted the highest opening weekend in box-office history in 44 markets, including such key territories as Australia, Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, India (for a non-local film), France (for a non-local film; measured by admissions), Italy (non-local), Spain and the U.K./Ireland. It also set records for the highest single-day grosses in 29 markets, including Australia, Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Spain and the U.K./Ireland, among others.

Carrying on the discussion from Friday on the budget disparities….. and now looking at the link / data above one needs to put two things in perspective while making any comparisons –

Contrast the box-office of Avengers Endgame to the domestic box-office of cinema in UK , Germany , France , Spanish / South America or heck even Chinese domestic cinema. The impact factor worldwide is right there.

There is simply too much diversity / bias among the Indian population and variety in tastes which reflects at the cumulative box-office. Now with social media influences one needs to account the new age bias on the urban minds where a rival is getting less appreciated for the top draw. The innocence and uniformity of the earlier era like the 70s-80s doesn’t exist anymore. A huge populace now watches a movie with colored lenses unless a very neutral central character (extremely rare like what we got in Bahubali 2 ) is in the play so it’s very difficult to get epic footfalls.

  71. Livewire Says:

Social media has also fueled fan polarization with few major stars fixated on aligning themselves to consolidate their target audience functioning in somewhat like vote bank politics. There is hardly neutral unifying top shot actor remaining among the correct lot to enjoy a universal appreciation cutting across the lines. Aamir had been enjoying that status for a while combining it with prime content but got disarrayed with few public mutterings and content took a beating too.

    • Correction* (pls delete the previous long comment)

This primarily started with the movie MNIK where SRK played his real life religious card, raise a non controversy that took place in USA at security checkin, made people in India debate about it, got support from the then government which played it for its vote bank politics, polarised Muslim’s opinion for the movie and tried to take advantage of the entire scenario. The movie did get a good opening but liberal Hindus by and large boycotted this sham.
SRK is still to recover from this stupid strategy. But instead of learning, he tried to leverage. He played characters after characters to hone his muslim focus. In movies like Raees his promo dialog of Mian bhai ka diler etc was quite an add on to his narrative. In Zero he lives in a muslim locality. These symbols makes one doubt his intentions.

Akshay too is now getting trapped in this pro nationalistic pro sikh image. Despite doing diverse characters like in Housefulls, 2point0 or in Jolly LLB2…he is now seen as the hero of Baby, Airlift and Kesari. a Nationalist chest thumping punjabi.

Aamir Khan was unlucky to get involved in a controversy (My wife suggests to leave india) which was uttered during the congress ledd intolerance debate and again tagged Aamir to be anti establishment/ anti Modi. His act against the actor in the getup of Lord Shiva PK destroyed lacs of his fans. The perception got built up pretty rapidly against him.

Salman has avoided this and that’s why his fan base is biggest.
Both Salman is still victim of the “Khans’ tag which they stoked for their advantage earlier. The MNIK syndrome started by SRK had some impact on them and whenever they do or say anything using the religious symbols.

So overall in this era of taking sides – pro or anti…quite a good number of people is picking movies based on reasons beyond cinema.

Still Akshay’s got most successful # of recovery of films, enough to be #1. We set these standards on this blog. Recovery is enough, a hit is more than Aamir’s 3 biggest grosser records in D3, PK and Dangal. It’s also more than Salman’s run.

The Vivek Agnihotri directed film is currently playing at 450 screens and if not for all audience attention towards the Hollywood biggie, it could well have scored double of what it did over the weekend.

But his abilities as director is questionable and i have showed my frustration about the way he managed the media, critics and few filmmakers ruined the many fantastic possibilities of a a true blue escapist Cinema and particularly the romantic/family movies.

His hand full of fan/friends are aggressive in their views and quite dismissive towards those having a different view. Salman Khan was the first to understand his designs. He made fun of the Kashyaps long time ago.

Its unfortunate that a trade site like BOI equates genuine urban middle class appealing film makers who make organic urban films like Shoojit Sircar, Neeraj Pandey, Zoya Akhtar etc with the likes of Kashyap, Motwane and Bharadwaj. Basically, a disastrous RGV had a protege called Anurag Kashyap who turned out to be worse (at least RGV has Rangeela, Satya, Company & Sarkar) who in turn created an even worse Vikramaditya Motwane.

And on most occasions, their films lose huge amount of money too for the distributors, exhibitors as well as the paying public most importantly. Examples, Bombay Velvet, Rangoon, Omkara, No Smoking etc etc etc. List is endless barring a few exceptions like Kaminey, GOW and Dev D which just about broke even.

But basically their films are the kind that should be lower cost but for whatever reason a big budget 100Cr film like Bombay Velvet is not a sensible decision. It’s like Tarantino and Scorcese are not known for marvel, Spielberg or Cameron type budgets.

The question should always be pointed at who gives the budget because I’m sure EVERY director wants the biggest budget possible but it’s upto the financer to say no and be practical.

        • Commercial producers also make most of the junk and most of them end up as disasters. There are small time commercial producers who make small time junk films. And they are not invited to international festivals like Cannes, Berlin unlike a VB, a Motwane, a Kashyap and their counterparts in other regional industries. That is the difference between artistic junk and commercial junk.
I will prefer a VB junk to a Vikram Bhatt’s junk.

Karan Johar and Adi Chopra are another couple of swines who’re the analogues equivalents of Anurag Kashyap and Vishal Bharadwaj ilk. In a best case scenario though I do hope Hindi cinema gets more like Shoojit, Pandey, Bhansali, Sujoy Ghosh, Zoya etc so that we can witness cinema as glorious as we did in the 70’s with the likes of outright commercial geniuses like Yash Chopra, Prakash Mehra, Sippy and Desai work in tandem with a complete legend like Hrishikesh Mukherjee, perhaps the greatest director in Hindi cinema till date in my opinion.

one thing i can tell being a gujju, that gujju ppl are no fools. They chose modi for 13 years as their CM and he has worked. No doubts about that. He may come across as a dictator-type, obstinate, biased leader – but he is not. In our country, where every topic has so many different viewpoints – decision-making always takes back-seat and it was time we needed such a quick decision-maker. Whether he did right or wrong, we will know after 20 years – but he is a tough task-master and himself a workaholic – no one can deny that! His first family (mother, brothers…) – they all live ordinary middle-class lives….he himself does not care about any personal favors….so what are his motives to serve the country? this question should be asked again and again and pondered over…..

If you keep your biases aside, you can clearly see through his unscrupulous agenda.

I know what you are up against. But even if one were to look beyond these communal lines, Modi has been a complete failure in delivering and has squandered all personal authority and goodwill. There was a halo prior coming to power, he is intelligent, street smart and can get going once in power but he has failed on all fronts and hollow inside out. Now even his speeches are border line dumb with no substance because there is none there. Raj Thackeray who is more of a gunda in my opinion in his own systematic way has exposed him with all the clippings of before and after…..something not even a single ‘corrupt’ politician in the opposition could do which includes Rahul Gandhi another arse-hole of first order. Modi is exactly what Erdogan is in Turkey at the moment and just looting the country for vested interests.

What hurts most is the plight of the poor and this guy has done nothing to uplift their cause and has infect ended up hurting them the most during his tenure. For the richer folks not much changes anyway and they continue to lead a wealthy life style with a bit of up and down bit it’s the poorer section which face the brunt as their nothing to shield them or stop the exploitation. I am not talking about freebies but genuine protections in the fiscal sense and giving them the confidence to feel equal. Corruption on ground level now is even more than Congress time , policing has gone from bad to worse and all these gst, new rules schemes etc given the babus more ammunition to harass and screw the common man….. I could write pages here but generally he has made things vey depressing. At least before people were living in some hope for a change / acche din but public is totally dejected on all front. On top of that he has erred big time with demonetization and then letting Anil Ambani make this enormous amount through Rafael I understand is much bigger scam than Bofors plus more put together. There are no checks and balances on loans and defrauding the banks which are still PSU and it is public money. Demonetization has hit the ordinary citizens very hard who were mostly daily workers, farmers, vendors and middle-class people. It did not even make a slight dent to black money and not impacted the crony capitalists who fund the political parties through the hawala channels. These capitalists expect favors from the ruling dispensation in the form of contracts worth billions of dollars. If the facts as reported in the above link concerning Rafael scam are correct, then it goes to prove the existence of unholy alliance between the crony capitalists and the political parties in power.

All sorts of R2India websites / blogs were mushrooming and people constantly sharing their views, abandoning their reticence to speak on this topic. But alas that’s no more the case now even with hardcore Modi bhakts because things have gotten frustrating…. its not just me but no one around me even talks about that option now and the reason is very simple we as a nation are not even getting basics right.

  75. Avengers – Endgame Has Extraordinary Monday
    Tuesday 30 April 2019 10.45 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Avengers – Endgame had an extraordinary Monday as collections crossed the 30 crore nett mark with 31 crore nett apprx coming on the fourth day. The drop is 40% on Monday but this is excellent considering where the collections are. The Monday is the second highest ever in terms of NETT and GROSS collections as it was lower than Bahubali – The Conclusion but higher than 2.0. No Hindi film has ever collected 30 crore nett on a Monday.

The total collections of Endgame are now 190 crore nett in four days and although the week is hard to judge this early it would be no surprise if its gets to 275 crore nett. The 300 crore nett mark will be hit over the second weeeknd ona worst case scenario. The lifetime is even harder to judge but 2.0 is a good yardstick and that film did 413 crore nett across India and at the moment Avengers Endgame has a better trend and also slightly higher numbers on Monday so the figures of that film can be beaten.

The collections of Avengers – Endgame till date are as follows.

    Friday – 53,50,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 52,00,00,000 apprx

  78. Alert : Salman Khan Called Akshay Kumar To Avoid 2020 Box Office Clash: Report

When Salman learnt that Akshay Kumar’s Sooryavanshi might clash with his film Inshallah on Eid next year, the actor called up Akshay to avoid a possible clash at the box office. “Salman Khan recently called up Akshay and said that he would ensure there isn’t any clash in the two mega films. Of course it would be good for their box office collections,” Mumbai Mirror reports.

Inshallah will be a romantic drama, while Sooryavanshi will be a high-octane action film

At some point it’s got to be gross only comparing. Taran and BOI are mixing 2 (not as convenience or bias) but they are inconsistent depending on movie.

Taran hasn’t given Hindi only figures for AE, it’s all India unless I’m wrong.

  83. Endgame Could Be All Time Best After Bahubali 2
    Tuesday 30 April 2019 13.45 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Avengers – Endgame looks to be heading for a similar finish to 2.0 or maybe even a little better. 2.0 had grossed 284 crore nett plus in seven days and 300 crore nett in its extended eight days. Here Endgame is probably looking at a lesser week one figure but the trend in collections is better on the weekdays which means the second week should be better. 2.0 had grossed 79 crore nett in week two for a total of nearly 380 crore nett in two weeks.

There is a good chance Endgame will be similar or even better than 2.0 after two weeks which will mean it being pretty close to 400 crore nett after two weeks. Bahubali – The Conclusion is the highest NETT grosser by a distance followed by Bahubali – The Beginning (418 crore) and 2.0 (413 croree) and Endgame has chances to beat both these films.

Dangal is the highest grossing film from the Hindi film industry with 387.29 crore in all languages and that total is sure to be surpassed by Endgame. The Daily comparison of Avengers – Endgame and 2.0 is as follows.

But this is all-India so not exactly comparing like for like are BOI? Usually it’s Hindi they care about and now they are doing all India. Wish they started earlier, hopefully one day we are only looking at All India GROSS only.

    The Brawler (Mukkabaaz) – 8.1

    Paanch – 7.7
    Raman Raghav 2.0 – 7.3
    No Smoking – 7.2
    Manmarziyaan – 6.9

Not to mention he received a personal handwritten note from Martin Scorsese for GoW and Ugly.

In 2 or 3 decades, no one is going to remember the popular filmmakers of our times (KJo, Aditya Chopra et al) but Anurag Kashyap will always be remembered for his filmography.

There’s not one contemporary film director in Hindi cinema who will stand taller than Kashyap, in the years to come.

    Like

    • I won’t even mention the various international film festivals which have honoured his films. That would actually take too long to mention.

      Like

    • Let me add another important note: since Indians are so obsessed with Oscars, there’s only one Indian director who has been awarded by the Academy. His name is Satyajit Ray.

If Anurag Kashyap makes crap films, Satyajit Ray’s cinema is even more inscrutable.

The same applies to Adoor Gopalkrishnan, the second most famous Indian director of all time.

The world doesn’t give a damn about popular/hack filmmakers — only the true artists stand out. Which is why Orson Welles is revered even today, when he did not make a SINGLE HIT film in his life.

Guru Dutt did not direct the biggest hits, but ask any filmmaker worth his salt in the present generation and he/she will tell you just how much of an influence he has had on Hindi cinema.

I could go on and keep multiplying these examples till the cows come home. But the point is — box office success does not equate to timelessness.

Timeless films are always created by true artists — people who have a genuine voice; people who have something substantial to say! Or in some cases, a whole new way of presenting or narrating a story. Such people have always been rare in any film industry, all across the globe.

And they need to be lauded, not ridiculed for sticking to their guns!

Boring, extended reunions, group unions and episode 3 shows how clueless and dark are writers when light of book is not there. it was big dark yawn but for Arya one minute flash. You create mayhem of crescendo about winter is coming and NK and dispense it with damp squib. 45 K Dothraki soldiers are evaporated in seconds but one hand lynnister is fighting w/o any scratch..

I watch inside the episode and revealed (that itself for 3rd episode was 41 minutes long) for every episode which give good amount of insight why things were done in a particular way. For example the track of Lyanna Mormont was very small but it became fan favorite so they increased her footage. In that sense makers have taken liberties but I think over arching makers will have same conclusion as book.”

I agree that after so much noise regarding army of dead, I thought the battle will last 2-3 episodes (some character would escape) and end near Kings landing (if I remember there were teasers with ice/snow in Kings landing); But I guess Cersie is a bigger antagonist. She has checkmated every other opponent and survived.

ps – Winter represented lots of things that could be extrapolated to current (in terms of adversity) but reducing it to human opponent and making it just about thrones reduces the scope/imagination.

    Crying Wolf In Modi’s India

    https://swarajyamag.com/ideas/crying-wolf-in-modis-india

However, there is nothing to show that Muslims are being targeted more over their religious identity than other religious groups, including Hindus, for their beliefs. After all, the same popular media has consistently turned a blind eye to atrocities by Islamists. Such has been the relentless push of a one-sided narrative that hate against BJP supporters has now been normalised. Open calls for lynching and death of ‘bhakts’, at times by professional journalists, has become par for the course; actual murders of Hindus for just being BJP supporters don’t raise any alarm.
This narrative also gets an occasional boost by hate crime hoaxes. These are cases where Muslims spin a false tale to cry victimhood, knowing very well that political opportunists and a compliant media will turn mere allegations into a shrill cry of ‘rising intolerance’.
Readers may remember the hate-hoax involving a Muslim woman named Misbah Qadri. A year after the BJP formed government in 2014, 25-year-old Qadri told a publication that she was being pressured to leave her flat by a property broker for being a Muslim.
Before the sensational story was vetted, the woman narrated her ordeal in front of a large number of media houses, which promptly denounced the ‘growing discrimination against Muslims’ and BJP’s perceived fanning of the anti-Muslim sentiment.
The broker, a Hindu, was painted as a religious bigot and was forced to go underground for several days fearing backlash from Islamists.
The frail narrative had rested on the complainant’s claim alone. Contrary details soon emerged that showed that the broker had been asking Qadri to leave the flat as she had been staying without due paperwork. It turned out that a month before her claim, the broker had submitted a police complaint against her.

In this interview, the father of Sonia Gandhi declared his “unwavering loyalty to Mussolini and Italy’s ‘admirable’ fascist past.” Stefano Maino was later captured as Prisoner of War during WWII. He was kept in a Soviet Prison and where Sonia Gandhi regularly visited him in Russian cities of Vladimir and Suzdal.
Rahul Gandhi who does not mince words when hitting against BJP and RSS for their “fascist ideology”, is yet to utter one word on family’s deep Fascist connection. Perhaps this was a major reason why Sonia Gandhi has avoided open media interactions in her political life. But the issue also puts lights on the sheer hypocrisy of Congress leadership when they use terms like Fascism without acknowledging its role and influence in their own family circles.

Gandhi has been at the receiving end of sexist and racist abuses by her political opponents for several decades. None other than Prime Minster Narendra Modi, when he was the chief minister of Gujarat in 2004, had called Sonia Gandhi a “Jersey Cow”. Modi keeps referring her as “madam” and it is not out of respect, but as a jibe for her Italian origin.

Bhakt logic, but that’s par for the course. Just like the box office is not a barometer for quality, hating the BJP does not equate to hating India! Or the idea of India.

It’s such a simple thing but unfortunately, it needs to be spelt out.

As for hating Hinduism, let’s discuss the Bhagvad Gita, the Vedas, Puranas, Patanjali Yoga Sutras, Vedanta philosophy anytime, any day.

Let’s discuss the works of Swami Vivekananda and the tenets of Buddhism, while we are at it.

The problem is, I’ve not learnt my history or theology from Whatsapp. I don’t subscribe to any ideology. I simply wish to take refuge in the arts. But when even that sacred space is violated by hate mongers, sometimes, only sometimes, I put out the facts for all the neutral people to see. And reflect.

I can sympathise with Satyam. He has tolerated this ideological hatred towards art much longer than I have.

  92. For the folks blaming Modi and BJP of below the belt comments on the opposition, if this is not what u term “below the belt”, i doubt what is. If not anything else, at least Modi has created a sense of awareness regarding sanitation and cleanliness through the swachh bharat abhiyan and aggressively forwarded the cause of female sanitation and toilets, something which successive previous governments never even bothered mentioning. Claims of electrifying villages may be exaggerated yet the fact that we are talking about it now is a welcome change. For the first time since Indira Gandhi did the Pakistan Army think tank feel the heat post the URI and Balakot strikes, something that Manmohan Singh government never retaliated in 2008 post the Mumbai attacks. Beyond that, India is a country of fools with misplaced priorities, a false sense of pride in cultural and linguistic aspects (which are not gonna get a civilized society anywhere) and a basic lack of civic and social sense (litter the streets, explode the population with a bizarre notion that more heads give more breadwinners etc). As long as the population (particularly the population of imbeciles with misplaced priorities and false egos) is exploding, no Manmohan, Shastri, Narasimha Rao, Vajpayee or Modi can do anything for you. A one child per family norm implemented rigorously, death penalty for rapists and murderers and few other such measures are the only one’s that can revive this worthless society full of brain dead opportunistic individuals. Its time to go the Chinese way at least for the next 3 decades. Else, keep quarreling over fb, twitter and instagram on potential 1984’s, 2002’s and Mumbai’s, Uri’s, Pathankot’s and Pulwama’s. PS : The only political leader who spoke on these terms was perhaps Sanjay Gandhi who thereby had a mysterious death! Says a lot about our state of affairs.

The cow is but a milch symbol (dugdha-bindu) of the Hindu nation. By no means should it be considered the emblem (maan-bindu) of Hindu nation. The object of worship should be greater than its worshipper. But at least the Hindu nation of tomorrow should not have such a pitiable symbol.

Likewise, a national emblem should evoke the nation’s exemplary valour, brilliance, aspirations and make its people superhumans! The cow exploited and eaten at will, is an appropriate symbol of our present-day (in 1936) weakness.

Then alone shall we achieve genuine cow protection like the Americans.”

Savarkar was probably referring to the care bestowed on cows in the US during the milching years. In the 1930s, the Americans had introduced cattle-dipping (periodical bathing), facilitated grazing fields that provided quality fodder and ensured hygiene.

Professor D.N. Jha, who had taught history at Delhi University and served as a member of the Indian Council of Historical Research, said in a recent interview that “Savarkar was not in favour of cow protection”.

“He (Savarkar) said there was no point in protecting the cow after a certain period of time. He ridiculed the hypocrisy of those who accused others of hurting their religious feelings,” Jha said in the interview.

“They do not mind consuming cow urine but, at the same time, keep some people at arm’s length,” Jha quoted Savarkar as once saying, appearing to refer to cow-protection advocates’ campaign against beef-eaters.

IMO, History is some facts and more opinion around those facts. They may be relevant in current context but I think what makes sense as of now is more important. Being gay was big taboo and illegal sometime back ago..but it is quite acceptable now.

Having grown up in different parts of India..people may not care for cows but cow meat is big no-no…How it become like, that could be debated..But in present there are many people who would be offended if they see cow being killed for meat. My views since moving outside India have changed but I don’t see any reason to offend people just because you want to. There are livelihood based on cow meat but it could be replaced with other meat (Buffalo) in Hindi heartland.

  95. One final comment on Anurag Kashyap: it’s absolutely ok to not like his films. There’s nothing wrong with that. Different strokes for different folks, and all.

But to hate his cinema on ideological grounds is wrong. More precisely, based on his political views, and only his political views, is wrong. That is what I object to.

Even if Kangana Ranaut becomes a BJP campaigner, or a toxic feminist, I will never rate her poorly as an actress. Appreciating her performances after her recent outbursts puts me in a quandary, but I can’t deny that she did a splendid job in Queen.

I liked her performance in Gangster as well. She is talented, about that I have little doubt.

In short, I can separate the art from the artist. That last part is essential. Essential to exhibiting tolerance. Essential to having an ethical, honest debate that transcends the boundaries of petty politics or religious ideologies.

    • My views on Anurag Kashyap and his gang is non-political. I still do not know about his political views. But i rate him poor on his script selection and directorial abilities. He is responsible for 25% less cinema we are seeing today. He is what Ram Gopal Varma is without the Bajpayee, Urmila and Amitabh movies.

He would have been rejected even more in South, which is now leading Indian cinema in every sense.

I do wonder where he gets money for his movies which are mostly flops/disasters. His phantom films produces several movies…how?

      =======

      On political views:

I think only 30% of voters have permanent political views. I know a lot of people who like BJP but don’t like Modi-Shah and vice versa. Same way many like Priyanka but not Rahul and vice versa. Why Congress wins MP state but struggling in general elections in the same state? Means there are lacs who pick and chose.

My note: We’ve had enough talk and discussion about the Hindu-Muslim angle and how one community is being oppressed by those in power and majority is neglected in favour of minorities who wreak havoc. Thing is there’s no end to this, and if we quote fake WhatsApp messages to prove these points, we’re moving in the opposite direction of development. One WhatsApp message went to the length of labeling Amartya Sen a corrupt and a traitor, because he spoke against the BJP policies! Another message spoke about Sri Lankan’s President’s decision to ban all mosques and Islamic prayers in the country after the attacks — a definite lie.

If you think such people in power, with hatred towards a common group of people, will bring in development, you’ve missed the point! They’ve quite easily deflected all questions on development and goverment measures of the future: instead, they continue to blame Congress practices and BSP’s agenda. The Modi bhakts follow a similar trajectory. I’ve rarely had anyone with whom I’ve had a sane discussion. They’ll either blame you for “supporting” AAP or Congress and have an agenda (urban naxalism/intellectual terrorism and all that bullshit) but will never answer any questions on BJP/Modi’s Modi Government’s failed promises in 2014.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Avengers – Endgame dropped around 10% on Tuesday to collect in the 27-28 crore nett range. This number is again higher than any Hindi film on a non holiday. Simmba did almost 28 crore nett but it was a national holiday for the New Year. Bahubali – The Conclusion in Hindi was almost 30 crore nett. This takes its five day total to a huge 217 crore nett plus with the first week probably looking to close at 260-265 crore nett. The top grosser of 2019 is Uri – The Surgical Strike at 244 crore nett and those numbers are being crushed in a week.

Avengers Endgame will also cross the last Avengers film Infinity War in just one week. That film had grossed 228 crore nett and 290 crore gross and both numbers will be beaten in the first week. The film seems on course for the 400 crore nett mark but the second Friday number is important as if the Thursday to Friday drop is big then the 400 crore nett lifetime total could become a task.

The collections of Avengers – Endgame till date are as follows.

    Friday – 53,50,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 52,00,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 53,50,00,000 apprx

Akshay Kumar, moreover, became quite close to the ruling BJP government. He made his fondness for Prime Minister Narendra Modi known extensively. During the 2015 intolerance debate, he was among the first ones to say that the movement is hogwash and unfair. He recently did a non-political interview with Narendra Modi and one can see that he is constantly trying to place himself in the good books of BJP. He did everything right – from doing socio-political and patriotic films to spreading Modi’s pet project Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan through Toilet – Ek Prem Katha to talking about the welfare of soldiers to promoting Modi during the crucial elections – each and every move was calculated in order to project himself as a true Indian and deshbhakt. And yes, for those who are confused, being friends with BJP is a bonus point for all those who wants to be known as true patriots nowadays!

So as one can see Akshay Kumar succeeded in all counts except for one – giving up on his Indian citizenship! And then unsuccessfully trying to hide the fact. This is a classic case of how a successful brand can be created easily but can fall like a pack of cards if not managed well. Akshay in no time became a prototype of ideal Indian but when challenges stared him on his face, he faltered and how. For instance, earlier he was asked to comment on his Canadian citizenship, the actor shockingly and brazenly lied that it’s just an honorary citizenship offered by the Canadian government. A quick Google search will tell anyone that very few personalities have been offered Canadian honorary citizenship and Akshay is not on that coveted list. Yesterday, media cornered him for not voting and Akshay refused to answer and walked off. It just makes me wonder – couldn’t he and his team thought of a better way of tackling these queries? Was lying and running away the only solutions?

In his quest for building his brand, he did some very good work like making menstruation conversations normal, spreading the idea of sanitation and helping families of martyrs. One only wishes he had handled the Canadian citizenship row in a better way. Here’s hoping he comes with a fine strategy and ends this controversy once and for all.” – Akshay, like evry other B town actor right from AB to Srk to Aamir is an opportunist and working on espionage thrillers and socially relevant themes helped him revive his image from that of a trash masala comedy icon to a character artist who can be taken seriously. His pro BJP stance is a matter of personal opinion and has nothing to do with his citizenship. The only aspect where he perhaps went wrong was this entire Modi interview episode which was bound to create controversy at the time of elections. Barring that, how he approaches his films, what he chooses to act in and what he doesn’t and what ideology he supports is purely his prerogative. If dumb Indians (mind you that’s millions we’re talking about including the Salman worshippers as well as one’s who call Aamir a so called thinking actor and one’s who claim Kashyap to be India’s Sorcese or the Srk fan girls who cannot stop blushing at the 54 year old’s name) equate his movies and commercials to him being a real life patriot and one whose at par with an Air Force or Army officer, its the problem with the blind fanatics, not with Akshay.

In the beginning it seemed churlish, people in India sorting each other out as bhakts (people of faith) and seculars. Anybody with a little intelligence can tell the two can coexist in one body, a group of people, a family or a society, but in a complicated country of 1.3 billion people who live between a few centuries and speak a thousand tongues, English is a bit of a handicap to capture it all.
Of course, there’s a leadership crisis that the BJP may be required to fill, but it will be under the watchful eyes of an aware, ambitious and eager India, not the self-loathing lotus-eaters of the past seventy years who walked around in stupor recognising shadows of each other in shadowy conversations of conceit and deceit.
Something is happening in India. Indians will win. Keep the faith.

I know most of BJP supporters proudly agreeing to be called Bhakts. Though from the supported of opposition parties, Bhakta is used like a gaali. I disagree with their approach. They should have coined a better terminology because Bhakt is not a galli. It is pious adjective.

The total collections of the film are now around 245 crore nett meaning it has done more business than any Hindi film this year in just six days. The week is looking at a 265 crore nett total.

The highest Wednesday in history is Sultan at 36 crore nett plus and Ek Tha Tiger at 30 crore nett plus but both these films were on day one and it could be the final numbers of Avengers – Endgame beats Ek Tha Tiger.

The US said on Wednesday the designation of Jaish-e-Mohammad leader Masood Azhar by the United Nations was a demonstration of the “international commitment to rooting out terrorism in Pakistan”, quashing relief in Islamabad that it had scored a victory by dodging mention as an accomplice.

The United States, the chief sponsor and driver of the designation, also sought to tie the implementation of the listing — imposing a travel ban, assets freeze and arms sales embargo on Azhar — to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s stated commitment to eradicating terrorism, seemingly holding him personally accountable for it.

“Designating Azhar demonstrates the international commitment to rooting out terrorism in Pakistan and bringing security and stability to South Asia,” Garrett Marquis, a spokesperson for the US National Security Council said in a statement Wednesday, in the first and only on-record official comment on the listing.

Marquis also directly linked Azhar to the February 14 killing of 40 CRPF personnel, pointedly perhaps to counter those making too much of the non-mention of Pulwama, Kashmir or Pakistan in the UNSC statement on the designation and the “narrative summary” released by the 1267 sanction committee for listing.

It’s a moot point what Naveen has raised. First get Indian film verdicts correct in India nevermind a film that is absolutely trailblazing across the world in every single market. It’s obviously smashing records in India and won’t be considered a flop whatever cost is pinned against it. It certainly won’t be more than all India 2.0 distribution cost which would be average at India level! It’s only Hindi where it’s a hit!

I expect the Hollywood model to be something profitable for sure. But fairplay to Naveen it isn’t transparent. But hey we are stuck in an alternate universe if we think Bollywood trade is transparent!

“Throwback to ‘Ishq‘… Big phones, sitting on set all day because we had no vans and the rooms were too far away to keep going to and we still worked 14 hours heat rain or shine… and looked good. All nineties people agree? What say Ajay Devgn, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla,” Kajol captioned the image posted on Instagram.

Hindi cinema lacks the vision to attempt a Bahubali forget Hollywood. Brahmastra may be interesting but it seems a lot of hype is going to be created around it by online media but I suspect a damp squib. The closest we ever get to experience something of that magnitude is when a 50 year old Salman or Aamir’s film is about to release! The rest are busy making shit or small budget films.

It’s clear many big production guys these days do not wish to work hard. they’re busy making remakes or sequels of dumb comedy films.

As much as Ra. One proved to be a misfire, I kind of admire SRK for attempting something different at that time. We haven’t had such gutsy experiments from major stars since.
