Andhadhun has emerged the 13th highest grosser ever worldwide if we take into account the business on all formats. The original film recorded business of 115 crore worldwide but it has made a further 325 crore in China. The India gross of the film was just 93 crore which means the it has done 21% of its business in India, 74% in China and 5% in the rest of the world.

The film which found appreciation in just Mumbai city, Pune and Bangalore in India has worked in China in a big way. The better business in Mumbai and Pune can be put down to the local feel but that would have hardly held much importance in China. The film is in different zone to other films which have done well in China like Dangal, Secret Superstar and Bajrangi Bhaijaan which held a lot of emotional appeal for the the female audience in China.

Andhadhun is the third highest grossing Indian film ever in China with $47.15 million collected so far. The worldwide figure on all formats is 440 crore apprx. Below are the top fifteen films worldwide on all formats.

    1. Dangal – 2023.81 crore

    2. Bahubali – The Conclusion – 1810.59 crore

    3. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 910.28 crore

    4. Secret Superstar – 858.42 crore

    5. PK – 750.59 crore

    6. 2.0 – 655.81 crore

    7. Sultan – 615.71 crore

    8. Bahubali – The Beginning – 599.72 crore

    9. Sanju – 578.44 crore

    10. Tiger Zinda Hai – 565.10 crore

    11. Padmaavat – 563.55 crore

    12. Dhoom 3 – 558.42 crore

    13. Andhadhun – 440 crore apprx

    14. 3 idiots – 397.08 crore

    15. Chennai Express – 395.92 crore

Whoops! So much for Bollywood losing significance compared to southern cinema, 17 of the top 20 worldwide grossers remain Bollywood films with 1 of the remaining 3 being 2.0 with a Bollywood factor involved. Even Avengers Endgame in all formats (including Tamil, Telugu and the English version running in non Hindi states) would barely cross the footfall count of Padmaavat, the huge numbers being an illusion created in the post GST market and hiked up ticket rates.

Secret Superstar did 900+ cr gross worldwide and 3 Idiots did 800+ cr worldwide.

How can 3 Idiots be 800 Cr? It came way back in 2009-10 when Hindi cinema was hardly setting foot in Chinese and far east Asian shores. If 3 Idiots did 800, PK should have crossed 1500 comfortably.

De De Pyaar De Has Ordinary Opening
    Friday 17 May 2019 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

De De Pyaar De had an ordinary opening of around 15-20%. The opening is less than last weeks Student Of The Year 2 probably because it does not have much for the youth or mass audience. But this film should have a far bigger evening and night audience than Student Of The Year 2 and that could push the collections of the film to a decent level for the first day.

The film had previews on Thursday evening and they were not bad considering just 1 or 2 shows at multiplexes and collections are looking to top the 1 crore nett mark for Thursday. But the morning shows have far lower occupancy than the previews and the hope will be that evening shows repeat the preview occupancy.

The film had a decent trailer and probably one of the better ones of the year offering good humour for the metro and A centre multiplex audience. The trailer was not the sort to get the initial crowds as the film looked more for the family audience rather than the mass crowd. The music was decent but none of the songs were huge hits. Sonu Ki Tito Ki Sweety was a film from the same banner in a similar zone and that had chart busting music but no star like this one. But that star factor probably gets negated with a comedy like this which hold less appeal for the mass audience.

Like almost Hindi films today its about the trajectory on Saturday and Sunday to stay in that box office race and have a chance of sustaining strongly over the weekdays.

Hina Khan Attracts Support From All Corners Over ‘Chandivali Studios’ Remark

“Cannes has suddenly become Chandivali Studios kya?” a magazine editor posted in an Instagram story, which drew ire from a host of TV fraternity members who supported Hina and her journey whole-heartedly.

Ekta Kapoor, the producer of “Kasautii Zindagii Kay”, in which Hina played Komolika, said: “Hina we are so proud of you.”

Filmmaker Farah Khan wrote: “I’ve shot many a times at Chandivali Studios and it’s a great place! So proud of you Hina Khan… it’s not where we come from but where we are going that matters! Have fun at Cannes Film Festival, you are probably the only one who is there for the right reasons… A film.”

Actor Karanvir Bohra slammed the scribe’s “snide” remarks and wrote: “Maybe, you had things ready for you maybe you didn’t have a humble beginning, maybe you did… But I think hobnobbing with the glitterati, you have forgotten your roots. This is the same Chandivali Studios where Shah Rukh Khan sir, Naseeruddin Shah sir, Anupam Kherji, Ekta Kapoor and Sushant Singh Rajput have come up the hard way and made a name for themselves.

“We all are very proud of Hina Khan and for this achievement. We all are with you girl.”

Actor Nakuul Mehta commented: “Cannes is no Chandivali Studio. It can’t ever be. Chandivali is where many TV shows, ad films and features have been shot. Some very iconic ones too. To a continued journey of evolution and breaking norms, Hina Khan. You go girl.”

Arjun Bijlani applauded Hina’s self-made journey and thanked the scribe for making her a “superstar”.

“Firstly we are all proud that Hina Khan is at the Cannes Film Festival. She has reached there on her own and yes Hina, you looked stunning.”

Actress Kavita Kaushik wrote: “Chandivali Studios holds way more talent, inspirational stories than one will ever hear from the ‘just lost weight to become an actor just like daddy’ talents! TV actors can make biggies talk like a jealous chachi (aunt). You have made us all proud.”

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit said Hina’s “journey is an inspiration to millions of girls who aspire to become actors”.

De De Pyaar De found it tough going on the first day with collections in the region of 8 crore nett. The film has one of the lowest openings for an Ajay Devgn starrer in recent times. The opening day number is very similar to Luka Chuppi with main multiplexes doing less but other multiplexes and single screens doing better but Luka Chuppi was a smaller film.

Last we saw Tiger Shroff go out of zone and do a campus love story and the opening day was just decent, this week Ajay Devgn went out of zone with a Rom – Com and the collections are even worse. Here the fans were not just interested so circuits where Ajay Devgn films outperform are very low. The plus is the reports are better compared to Student Of The Year 2 with the big city audience so the neutral audience in these places may take the film somewhere unlike Student Of The Year 2 which had poor reports.

The opening is 50% of Total Dhamaal released in March with far lower collections across the board. The film should show good growth tomorrow in the big multiplexes but its going to be about the Monday as the weekend business is going to be average at best unless Saturday doubles up or something close to that.

Now, Tanushree’s lawyer Nitin Satpute has issued a statement about this matter. He states that the police cannot orally give a clean chit to any offender and therefore, an investigation is underway. He wrote, “That Bogus news and rumours have been spread on the social media and through other mediums that clean chit has been given to the Nana Patekar by the Oshiwara police station, in respect of the crime registered against Nana Patekar by Tanushree Dutta for the offence of sexual harassment.”

He added, “Police have recorded almost 15 witnesses but key witnesses who are the eyewitness of the incident have not recorded their statements. Witnesses are not coming forward because of fear of the accused persons as they are highly influential. Witnesses have approached the media show too and given their statement before media that they are eyewitness but police have not recorded their statement yet. One is very much eyewitness of the incident is not ready to come forward to support the version of the Tanushree Dutta as 10 years back she was put in hurdle and legal complication.

The investigation is going on and the police are doing their job at their level best. There is a little delay in the investigation as police are busy in controlling law and order situation as well and the election Process. Police are doing their best. Some witnesses or implies by the interested person so that they are not coming forward and listen until the accused get arrested as there is no protection or security or safety for the witnesses. If the accused arrested then the witness will feel safe and will come forward to record their statement in the police station”

He further said, “n fact, no clean chit is given to Nana Patekar and other accused by the police. Clean chit cannot be given orally, it can be approved by the concerned magistrate. The rumours have been spread only to get some work in the film industry. As the accused person has lost their work in the film industry. The clean chit can be approved by the court after filing a summary report for the classification of offence.”

De De Pyaar De had low collections on day one as it collected around 8.25-8.50 crore nett as barring Mumbai and Delhi / UP all the circuits had very low collections. It cant be said that the two bigger circuits are decent but they are much better compared to the rest. The film is well short of last weeks Student Of The Year 2 and that film itself did not have a good first day but just average.

South and East India is very weak but the shocker is CP Berar, CI and Rajasthan as collections are like Luka Chuppi which does not have any star presence while this has Ajay Devgn. Total Dhamaal is the biggest opener of 2019 in these markets even though other films have released on holidays. The overseas setting and story has probably meant that the film is not relatable to the Hindi markets and it cant really go anywhere from such a start in these places.

What a movie!!! This is a great film by Akshay Kumar.
Based on the true story, one knew the eventuality.
But the valour shown is extraordinary.
Akshay shows why he is No 1. No other Khan could have done this.

    4/5 Superhit film.

Watch Gully Boys on Amazon Prime.
A just about good film and runs primarily because of male lead and his friend. Aalia ia wasted and i think Kangana was right in saying Aalia had nothing to do and there is no comparison between her in Manikarnika and Gully boys.

Salman Khan and Aayush Sharma to be cast together in a remake of a Marathi film?

Salman Khan and Aayush Sharma are set to work together and buzz is that the two are even looking for movies together and they are even reading scripts. Salman has been keen on remaking a Marathi film, Mulshi Pattern, which is an intense, gritty drama. Bollywood Hungama has reported earlier that he has acquired rights for the same. Most probably he would star in it with brother in law Aayush.

Soon to be Sooryavanshi – Akshay Kumar shockingly bombed us all with the poster of his upcoming film Laaxmi Bomb. It brought two things with it – Akshay’s impeccable first look from the film and very surprising release date.

Surprising for a fact, because Sooryavanshi is releasing during the same period as Laaxmi Bomb. Rohit Shetty announced his latest addition of the cop-universe, Sooryavanshi, to release on 22nd May 2020. But now, Laaxmi Bomb is announced for 5th June 2020. 2 Akshay Kumar movies with a difference of just a week? Sounds impossible.

There are murmurs that Akshay and the makers of both the films won’t allow such kind of release of both films. As a result, one can expect Sooryavanshi to change its release date. After all, it’s releasing on the day when another film is about to release, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Inshallah. It stars Salman Khan and Eid has been his bastion since 2009, barring 2013 when Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chennai Express took the slot. And there have been talks of Sooryavanshi makers planning to avoid this clash with Salman and Alia Bhatt-starrer. So an announcement from Sooryavanshi producers can be expected regarding the change of schedule. In fact, Sooryavanshi can arrive earlier since its shoot is already underway and expected to finish soon. The spot of Holi in March 2020 is vacant and it’ll be wise on the parts of Sooryavanshi makers to grab it before anyone else sets their eyes on it.

Student Of The Year 2 Second Friday Business
    Saturday 18 May 2019 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Student of The Year 2 droped on day eight as it collected 1.50 crore nett. The film has seen an almost 60% drop which was always a possibility as the film did somehow hold up better than its reports over the weekdays of the first week.

Despite being an city rom com its holding up better in the mass circuits. Gujarat has helped Mumbai to a 60 lakh figure on its second Friday. Tiger Shroff has a solid pull in mass markets as a film which is urban in feel and look is holding better outside urban centres. The film may have done a little better outside Ramadan as likes of UP, Gujarat and Nizam would have been higher.

Overall the film will be an Average / Below Average affair depending on where the collections end. It should cross 65 crore nett but may not be able to reach 70 crore nett. The daily collections of Student Of The Year 2 are as follows.

    Friday – 11,75,00,000 apprx

    Saturday 13,50,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 12,50,00,000 apprx

    Monday – 5,25,00,000 apprx

    Wednesday – 4,00,00,000 apprx

    Thursday – 3,50,00,000 apprx

De De Pyaar De has shown big growth on its second day as it collected around 11.75 crore nett. This takes its total to 20 crore nett in two days and 21.25 crore nett including the paid previews. The collections are still poor but the trend is strong and it can take advantage on the weekdays.

The growth on the second day is around 40-45% which is pretty similar to the biggest HIT of the year Uri – The Urgical Strike which went from 8.49 crore nett to 12.17 crore nett and De De Pyaar De is very similar though at a slightly lower level. This does not mean that this film will repeat the Uri – The Surgical success as that film went up on Monday but it has a chance of becoming a HIT despite the ordinary start.

The film has shown growth of around 50% in the major circuits like Mumbai and Delhi / UP while the likes of Rajasthan and CI have also gone up 25% but the poor initial here will limit the business in these places. The first weekend can go to 35 crore nett which is good from where this films started but so so for an Ajay devgn starrer.

Medium to low budget urban entertainers are staple diet for any film industry. Just like every HW movie cannot be an Avengers or DC film, every BW movie cannot be a Padmaavat or Bahubali. Mid range enterrainers were a necessity even in the 80’s & 90’s with all the Anil Kapoor, Govinda, Jackie films & they continue to be the same today. DDPD has received good reviews & seems like the wom is positively growing too. Don’t see any need to complain about it.

No wonder the best is saved for the last. Not just Akshay, every single one of the 22 odd main characters worked well on their roles, the exact reason why the film works despite a tedious screenplay that’s at least 30 mins too long.

  23. De De Pyaar De Hit by Elections On Sunday
    Sunday 19 May 2019 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

De De Pyaar De collections were hit by elections on Sunday although it may just get some growth though it will be limited. The collections should come in the 13-14 crore nett range as the biggest circuit Mumbai is unaffected with Maharashtra and Gujarat having gone to the polls on an earlier date. Delhi NCR where the film is doing well were also unaffected.
Punjab which saw a big jump in collections on Saturday was the main affected area. There were also elections in parts of UP, MP, Bihar and West Bengal and although these areas are not doing that great they had potential to have good collections on Sunday. UP, MP and Bihar do their best business on Sunday.

The weekend including previews will probably in the 35-36 crore nett range which is low and less than last weeks Student Of The Year 2. But the difference is the trend here is strong (Sunday notwithsatnding) and the film could do good business over the weekdays.

The weekend trend suggested an AVERAGE film at best for Student Of The Year 2 while this film has chances of proving to be a HIT despite the weekend being below the mark.

The weekend numbers are low for an Ajay Devgn starrer as Baadshaho(2017) had better numbers and the collections are not that much better than films released long back like Son Of Sardaar and Raajneeti but the industry will have to get used to disappointing openings as the cinema coming out from the Hindi film industry is not penetrating mass audiences and even if by chance a film is good it is holding only regional appeal and not across all Hindi markets.

De De Pyaar De is set to emerge a HIT film even though the growth on Sunday was limited. The all India growth may be limited but the business in Mumbai / Gujarat tells the real story and this circuit has big growth on Sunday with collections going up 30% in the circuit and 50% in Gujarat / Saurashtra. The weeeknd business is 36 crore nett including the Thursday previews.

Kalank Is A SUPER HIT in United Kingdom
    Wednesday 22 May 2019 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Kalank which has flopped in India has proved to be SUPER HIT film in the United Kingdom. The film is the ninth highest grossing film in the market over the last three and a half years (2016 – 2019) and it ranks up there with some very successful films.

Its a weird situation that a film totally rejected by the Indian audience has emerged a huge hit in the hardest market for Hindi films in recent times. A £500k total for Hindi films has become a task in this market today when it was achieved regularly a decade back. This is mainly due to loyalty cards from the big chains which leads to discounted amount given as the gross when the loyalty cards are used. Kalank has somehow managed to do business in the United Kingdom and will finish very close to the £1 million mark which has been achieved by only 8 films in since 2016.

Padmaavat deserves credit for the £2 million plus business which came outside Xmas and Eid which are the best periods for Hindi film business as this can be seen most of the films below are Xmas or Eid releases. The top ten grossers in the United Kingdom since 2016 are as follows with the verdicts for UK market.

Priyanka Chopra Bonds With Refugee Children In Ethiopia
Sharing the story of a 15-year-old girl, Priyanka spoke about the importance of education for girls.

Priyanka took to social media to share a series of photographs and videos of herself with the children from her philanthropic tour as Unicef’s Goodwill Ambassador in Addis Ababa. She also met Sahle-Work Zewde, the first female president of the country.

Sharing the story of a 15-year-old girl, Priyanka spoke about the importance of education for girls.

She wrote: “This is Hasina (15), she is a 7th-grade student who loves to go to school. She used to live with her sister and her husband, and without her knowing, her sisters’ husband was arranging her marriage to one of his friends… she was 12 at the time.

“One day when the man visited her house to pester her parents to marry her, she escaped to a friend’s house and the next day went to one of the community-based child’s marriage prevention platforms (alone), which she had heard about at school. She asked herself, ‘If she married now, would she ever go back to school again?’ Hasina loves learning and wasn’t willing to trade her education or freedom for anything.

Apparently, the film is said to feature a dialogue that the censors in Dubai found rather derogatory and objectionable and have hence decided to not release it. Commenting on the same a source informs us, “In India’s Most Wanted there is a dialogue that says most terrorists are based either in Pakistan or Dubai, and it was this reference that didn’t go down too well with the censors there. Had this dialogue been deleted the film would be permitted to release, but the makers of the film did not budge and hence it will not release.”

Confirming the same Raj Kumar Gupta, the director of India’s Most Wanted says, “Yes the film will not release in Dubai. There were some issues which could not be sorted and hence this decision.” When prodded whether it was the said dialogue that caused the issue Raj Kumar Gupta added, “Yes the said dialogue is there in the film and it is a factual one based on the research that has been conducted. So we did not want to do away with the dialogue and decided on retaining it in the film even if it entailed a non-release in Dubai.”

    • The question now is will NDA get a higher seat number than they did 5 years back.

Anyways, how come Avengers Endgame is getting so less highlight here when everything from Kalank to SOTY2 to DDPD is either nonperforming or flopping outright?

Endgame collected 365 cr nett by last weekend and is looking to finish at 370+ cr nett total in India. The movie is neither great or bad, but its trending suggests that it has been accepted well at indian multiplexes. That is a bit strange given that generic MCU films are not that big deals in India. How come the last 2 avengers movies have done so well?

Both Uri And Endgame has shown the amount of business that indian multiplexes can bring in, without the mass contribution from single screens. Kesari And Total Dhamaal each did only 150 cr with ample support from that demographic.

Bharat now has to do Dangal-range of business to beat Endgame. And anything below Uri’s 245 cr may well be considered underwhelming. 4 Hollywood movies are set to run along with it – Aladdin, Godzilla, Dark Phoenix and MIB International. Not sure if these imports will do well or not – but if a couple of them do 70-80 cr, it may as well cut into Bharat’s total business.

  39. De De Pyaar De To Continue Good Run Into Week Two
    Thursday 23 May 2019 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

De De Pyaar De may well remain the top film in its second week also as the two new Hindi releases Indias Most Wanted and PM Narendra Modi are pick up films but the pick up on Saturday of De De Pyaar De will be more than both the new releases even if they manage to find and audience.

The second week is important for De De Pyaar De because one it did not have a good weekend and secondly its third week will be cut short with the release of Bharat. Raid grossed 25 crore nett apprx in week two last year and De De Pyaar De will probably have to do better than that if it is to reach a similar total to Raid as week one will be less than Raid.

The film could suffer it a little in North as there are two big Punjabi films releasing with major stars. Its weird to have two major Punjabi films clashing as the market is small and with a clash you limit it further. There is Chandigarh Amritsar Chandigarh with Gippy Grewal and Muklawa with Ammy Virk and these two are two of the three major stars of Punjabi cinema. Its a bit like an Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan in terms of star positioning for that industry.

De De Pyaar De will probably have to a show a fall of 25% or less on Thursday if it is to beat the second week number of Raid. The collections of De De Pyaar De till date are as follows.

    Thursday – 1,25,00,000 apprx

    Friday – 8,25,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 12,50,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 14,00,00,000 apprx

    Monday – 5,85,00,000 apprx

    Tuesday – 5,50,00,000 apprx

    Wednesday – 5,15,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 52,50,00,000 apprx

Top Twenty Stars Second Quarter 2019 – Ajay Devgn Makes Ground
    Thursday 23 March 2019 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The top twenty star list has not seen much change for the first quarter list with only Ajay Devgn going up a few places due to the initial and run of Total Dhamaal followed by a fair De De Pyaar De. There is not a challenge in sight for the leading star Salman Khan. You expect one of the younger guys to make a push but its just not happenning at the moment. Either the openings are not quite there or then the films dont work and then there is no consolidation when you have a big one with long gaps between films.

There are younger actors coming through and a few of the places outside top ten are by default as the newer actors have given hits but no initials and and the next few films will tell where they stand. If you are unable to get an initial it can be pack up any time though you can get leverage of a star from the media if the film works but it does not last.

The importance of younger stars is huge to the industry as it is star driven and will be for sometime to come. There can be talk that the Hollywood route where technology is above stars can work here if there were no budget constraints but it makes no difference as you still need a big star face to take a big risk in India. The success of Bahubali – The Conclusion makes a case for a face is not needed but that film also did not need the Hindi business for recovery, it had star director for its own markets which was enough, the Hindi business came as a huge bonus.

The third quarter 2018 update can be seen here. The fourth quarter 2018 update can be seen here.
