  1. First Bachchan and now Akshay are trying to turn public opinion about Metro or Metro car shed?
There are protests by by Aarey colony residents to save the trees which maybe cut due to Metro.
Some bollywood celebrities like Shraddha Kapoor, Dia Mirza, Randeep Hooda are supporting the residents.

“What is counter proposal? Where should shed be located?

If city needs something, there is short list of places; experts jot down pros and cons. You debate and then vote.

In my city they want to provide shelter to homeless; They started with 10 sites; finally they voted after heated debate. There would be people who still wouldn’t agree but it was transparent process. If you don’t like what was done in site selection voting, then vote them out in next election for city council.

In US many cities don’t have public transportation because car lobby was so strong that they never allowed funding of intracity transport. Comparatively Europe has more robust public transportation.”

Satellite Update: De De Pyaar De Ordinary – Total Dhamaal Extraordinary

De De Pyaar De has managed just about fair ratings one television with a little over 65 lakh impressions. The film was a urban comedy so did not have really have much of a reach but still the television premiere is better than films like Uri – The Surgical Strike and Gully Boy which also did the bulk of there business in urban centre though to a varying degree. The television rating is probably better because Ajay Devgn has a bigger reach than the actor of Gully Boy or Uri – The Surgical strike and the comedy factor even though the comedy is not the type lapped up by the Hindi belt.

De De Pyaar De may not have hit the target on television but Total Dhamaal is on a phenomenal run as it racks up close to 5 crore impressions in just five peak screenings. That is almost an average of 1 crore impressions per screening and very few films even manage 1 crore impressions on their premiere. The film is one up on Golmaal Again and is probably the biggest film on television after Bahubali – the Conclusion and Tiger Zinda Hai of films released in the last few years. If it keeps on going like this then it would become bigger than Tiger Zinda Hai. Total Dhamaal is by far the most watched film of 2019.

  5. This Friday will witness a triple clash at the box office with The Zoya Factor, Prassthanam and Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas lined up for release. The three films are set to face a stiff competition from holdovers Dream Girl and Chhichhore, which continue to remain steady amid positive word of mouth.

Film trade analyst Girish Johar expects each of the three films to open at around Rs 1-1.50 crore. Talking about the clash, he said, “This week is really crowded. Dream Girl and Chhichhore are already doing well and then these three films releasing together. Hollywood film Rambo is also a decent release on the same day. How they will fare in their opening weekend depends on their content and word of mouth. But if they fail to impress, the two films (Dream Girl and Chhichhore) will dominate them at the box office.”

On being asked which of the new releases can dominate this weekend, Girish added, “All the three films cater to different target groups. Prassthanam is an action film and may cater to the masses. The Zoya Factor is niche upmarket film and may mostly cater to the multiplex audience. Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas will mostly target the youth.”

  9. THE ZOYA FACTOR has a very impressive commencement that gives an idea about the cricket and luck elements of the film. Shah Rukh Khan’s witty narration and the animated sequence adds to the fun. The initial scenes of Zoya are okay but the film gets better once she reaches Sri Lanka and interacts with the Indian team. The romantic track also has its moments. Two scenes stand out here – Zoya’s interaction with Nikhil in the elevator and Nikhil meeting Zoya’s family and family friends. Post-interval, the film slips a bit. Also, the film seems too quick at places. The World Cup sequence in the pre-climax and climax however revives the interest.

The performances are great by all actors. Sonam K Ahuja suits the part to the T. One can’t imagine anyone else for this role and she does total justice, whether in the scenes of her being love struck or acting pricey or even acting mature and giving out some important lessons to Nikhil in times of need. Dulquer Salmaan is super-dashing but he also gets his act right. He’s totally into his character and convincingly seems the captain of the team. Angad Bedi gets a great part and also screen space and is fine as the baddie. Sikander Kher is the surprise of the film. His role might remind one of Prateik’s character in JAANE TU YA JAANE NA [2008] but his part stands out and Sikandar ensures that happens. One of his best scenes is when he offers tea to the very protestors who have come to vandalize his house! Sanjay Kapoor is a natural. Manu Rishi Chadha is fine and it’s good that he doesn’t overdo the lisping bit. Koel Purie is strictly okay. Pooja Bhamrrah (Sonali) looks quite glamorous and plays the supporting part well. From the other crickets, the ones who leave the mark are Abhilash Chaudhary (Shivi), Gandharv Dewan (Harry) and Sachin Deshpande (Lakhi).

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music is in sync with the film’s mood. ‘Lucky Charm’ is the best of the lot followed by ‘Kaash’ and ‘Maheroo’. ‘Pepsi Ki Kasam’ is played in the end credits. Indrajit Sharma and Parikshit Sharma’s background score (with additional background score by Kingshuk Charavarty) is dramatic and adds to the fun.

On the whole, THE ZOYA FACTOR is a feel-good popcorn entertainer that works chiefly due to concept, treatment, humour and performances. At the box office, it has the potential to grow dramatically due to a good word of mouth.

More than Ranveer and Alia, I am happy for Siddhant Chaturvedi who is tasting big time success with this.
Happy for the versatile yet humble Ranveer singh. He richly deserves this honour.
For Zoya, this is a lottery.
    And Alia’s sincerity is rewarded.
It is not about winning or even being nominated.
    It is just being considered.

  21. Dream Girl Continues Strong Run On Second Monday
    Tuesday 24 September 2019 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Dream Girl continued with its strong run on Monday as it collected 3.50 crore nett and took its total to 98.50 crore nett apprx. the second week business of the film is heading towards 38 crore nett which is an excellent number for week two.

The only think that remains to be seen is whether the film can beat Badhaai Ho in NETT collections. The gross numbers and footfalls will remain lower for sure. Also whther it is a bigger HIT than Chhichhore but even though the film has a 4 crore nett lead if we compare the first 11 days it will probably fall short of that film as its run will be cut short when War release which is set to open to huge numbers. Even to reach Badhaai Ho it will need some numbers after week three. This is the difference dates and competition make as if this film would have released on Chhichhore date and vice versa then this would have finished ahead. The appreciation is very similar for both films. The collections of Dream Girl till date are as follows.

    Week One – 70,12,00,000

    Friday – 5,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 9,00,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 10,75,00,000 apprx

    Monday – 3,50,00,000 apprx

    Second Week – 28,25,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 98,37,00,000 apprx

  22. Chhichhore Box Office: The Sushant Singh Rajput, Shraddha Kapoor & Varun Sharma led film is having a very good hold at the Box Office even in 3rd week. The film earned 2.50 crores* on 3rd Monday taking the total to 127.73 crores* which is excellent for a film which took single digit opening.

Chhichhore has now crossed the lifetime business of Hrithik Roshan starrer Kaabil which earned 126.58 crores and Akshay Kumar starrer Rustom which earned 127.49 crores. The next targets of the film are Airlift (129 crores), Stree (129.67 crores), Rowdy Rathore (131 crores), M.S. Dhoni- The Untold Story (133.04 crores) which will be surpassed in next couple of days or so.

Till now, Chhichhore has earned 127.73 crores, thus yielding an ROI (Returns On Investment) of 65.73 crores, considering its budget of 62 crores. With such collections, it has made a profit of 106.01% and surpassed John Abraham Batla House (102.08%) and Akshay Kumar’s Kesari (104%).

Chhichhore will soon beat Saaho’s returns of 112.14% but it will be interesting to see if it manages to overtake Article 15’s 152.20% in the list.

But I want to clear out that on 29th, the show will go on air. In one month, we will show the finale and after that, for the next two months you will see twists and turns.”

There have been reports that suggested that Bigg Boss 13 will end in 4 weeks. • Salman Khan has played a character called Radhe twice, once in Satish Kaushik’s 2003 love saga Tere Naam and once in his 2009 super-hit flick, Wanted. The source adds, “Just like Prem, Radhe is another of his popular screen-name. Though the part of Radhe in the Eid release is very different from his part in Tere Naam and Wanted, some of the personality traits of his characters in both the films have been retained in Radhe. We assure you that Salman Khan fans would be in for a treat as his character is totally massy, bindaas and entertaining!”

However, the good news is that Salman is very much on track as far as his film on the holy festival is concerned. There have been reports that he has signed a film called Radhe. And that’s true. A source close to the film spills the beans, “Radhe is indeed Salman Khan’s next after Dabangg 3 and it’ll release on Eid 2020. Dabangg 3 releases on December 20, 2019 and Salman will shoot few portions of Radhe before the former’s release. It is directed by Prabhudheva, who incidentally, is also helming Dabangg 3. He’s in a race against time and simultaneously handling the shoot and post production of Dabangg 3 along with the pre-production of Radhe.”

The official announcement for Radhe is expected anytime by the producers. As for Sanjay Leela Bhansali, he’s working with the other actor of Inshallah, Alia Bhatt, called Gangubai, based on a real-life respected pimp in Mumbai’s red light area. This film too will be announced formally by him soon and just like Radhe, will be out in 2020.

  38. Why Gully Boy is the right choice for Oscars: Visibility, international buzz gives the film a real shot
    Baradwaj Rangan

    Sep 26, 2019 13:19:58 IST
Of late, we’ve been hearing a lot about Anurag Kashyap. His Gangs of Wasseypur, which was screened at the 2012 Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival, was the only Indian entry in The 100 Best Films of the 21st Century, compiled by The Guardian. (“Stylish, visceral film-making, violent and hard-hitting, it’s got a valid claim to be India’s answer to The Godfather.”) Projects he’s been involved with — Sacred Games, Lust Stories — have found themselves nominated for the International Emmy Awards. He plays a (voice) role in Gitanjali Rao’s Bombay Rose, which opened the Venice International Film Critics Week this year. And he seems to have a spot reserved in the Special Presentations section at the Toronto International Film Festival. Mukkabaaz (which he directed) was screened there in 2017, and this year, it was Geetu Mohandas’s Moothon (which he co-produced and wrote the Hindi dialogues for).

      • Yes, my choice would have been Andhadhun or Badhaai ho or Padman. Any of these three were fabulous and in that order (Padman will be my third choice only if an issue based social drama would fetch ; remember Bill gates tweeted appreciating the movie which counts) for different reasons. All three were way above Gully Boyz for me.

        • Yeah…but you need deep pockets and expertise to promote the movie for Oscars.
Aamir spent his fortune for Lagaan and he did acknowledge that these things are more important.
Twinkle as producer gets a tick mark in all the boxes. She is articulate, wealthy and can influence.

        • And the movie has touch of United Nation etc.

But again i would prefer Andhadhun/Badhaai ho over Padman. The other two were superb movie, but may lack the producer’s backing needed.

The only box that Gully boyz ticks is the small section of journalists who writes for Telegraph in India. So you get brownie points in india which doesn’t matter to the west. Unless Ranveer + Deepika goes all out (with their money), this is a goner.

So it is not about influencing or spending money. It is about how good another film is compared to our entry.

  39. What’s more is that the teaser also mentions the film being inspired by some true life incidents from the Sacred Games actor’s life.

Talking about the teaser, we see Nawazuddin and lead actress Tamannaah sharing some cute moments. We see them stealing glances, riding a bike, complimenting each other and even though there are no dialogues, one can totally understand the feeling. The song in the background is a slow number making the visuals look even more delightful.

Nawaz will be seen essaying the role of a bangle-seller. Tamannaah essays the role of a village girl. The story will revolve around their brewing romance. The film also stars Anurag Kashyap and Rajpal Yadav, Kabir Duhan Singh, Rajpal Yadav and Aditya Srivastava.

  43. Liked Ad Astra a lot. It certainly should be seen in the theater for its visuals. Admittedly all such Hollywood efforts end up either in New Age mumbo jumbo (Contact, Interstellar) or involve a hokey and/or silly premise at bottom. Ad Astra probably falls into the latter camp (much like Gravity) but it’s a film that’s worth checking out. And Pitt really holds things together throughout. It’s not a phenomenal performance or something but one that’s perfectly pitched to the ‘mood’ of the film. The narrative worked for me, even found it gripping throughout. But I’ve also liked all the other films I’ve mentioned in this thread at one level or another.

    My take on Dream Girl:

Dream Girl (or Dreamgirl, as per the reader’s understanding of filmi grammar) is the latest Ayushmann starrer, the man with the Midas touch who has somehow found a winning formula to appease all kind of viewers. Much has already been written from the time its first trailer came out until quite recently when the film is winning hearts of the masses.

Keeping all biasness aside, the film does deliver, going by the audience reaction: a high-end multiplex, the likes of which have taken a liking to rooted cinema with small town flavour and inside jokes. Dream Girl has such jokes aplenty, and this has become the now winning formula of most new age filmmakers. Cast a bunch of well known actors with good comic timing and get them to deliver cleverly written one liners that no one else can with such relish.

Does it work? For me, it did, to an extent. It’s a smart film that knows how to fill the gaps of the holes created by a script that, without the baggage of the small town earthiness, can be called above average at best. The actors are intelligent and seem to be having fun. Ultimately, it’s the chemistry between all departments that saves it from going haywire and all over the place, especially in the first half.
In the second, it does come into its own, creating a riot in the final hour that reminded me of yesteryear’s comedies of errors.

This is a fun film that dares you to look away despite its flaws. Quite an outing at the movies that entertains at the cost of chances of a stronger scipt. This might not be the primary expectation of every cinema goer, but satiates the hell out of the regular one.

    • Terrific encapsulation Tony. I admit I did laugh out crazily and those one-liners, on their own are so wittingly written and delivered, it’s impossible to be not laughing at them, however cynical one might be. But yes, I mentioned about the ‘over-all’ cinematic experience of these kind of movies that are being churned out and more importantly, the end-meaning to all of these.

I had written about this on BR Saab’s blog..

      An Jo

      September 16, 2019

I for one am so glad that you have called a spade a spade BR Saab and am heartened by your reviews for both CHICHORE and DREAM-GIRL. It’s been hilarious to see folks orgasming over these ‘content’ movies. The problem that’s creeping in here is, for the most part, and I have gotten into vehement battles with bloggers and commentators, is the ‘low’ bar that is being set consistently: If ‘formula’ Hindi films were considered a bane during the ’80s’ — which again is a stupid classification since some of the greatest movies on the commercial and so-called f-‘artsy’ movies-front be they SALEEM LANGDE PE MAT RO or SPARSH or MOHAN JOSHI HAAZIR HO were made during the time: Now, it’s this over-hyphenating of pretty average movies like STREE, DREAM-GIRL, or CHICHORE as some ‘renaissance’ movies that claim rich ‘content’! All these terms of great writing, ‘screen-play’ film, are being bandied about. [The less said about SAAHO the better.]

Here’s the new recipe/formula for you: Take actors like GAJARAJ RAO, RAJKUMMAR RAO, NEENA GUPTA, SULEKHA SIKRI in your films, localize the film in a small-town belonging to Hindi-Hinterland, and lo and behold, you have a tightly budgeted film making moolah! Just have a few ‘weird’ – weird for the elite — characters like Pankaj Tripathi or Aparakshit Khuraana in your films, give them cheesy applaud-lines, and get the tag of a ‘content’ film! Then claim WOM is damn good for these films, spread the word around, and you gotten yourself a hit! Are the lines in the film, is the writing, really spectacular? Is it really so ‘mitti-ki-khusboo-chehekti-hai’ scenario, the ‘petrichor’ of its kind? I barely laughed for 10 minutes in STREE, maybe a little more in BADHAI HO, and maybe almost equivalent in CHICHORE!–[Trust me, I did go to the shrink and check if age is indeed catching up on me at the cusp of 40 and am being the old, cynical farts like my grand-uncles who thought there would be no better actor after Dilip] — Yes I had a few moments of laughter: That doesn’t make these films the next GOLMAAL [talking of Mukherjee, not Shetty]; nor does it make Khurrana the next middle-class hero, Palekar!

There are some genuinely effective films like VICKY DONOR, PIKU, OCTOBER — with the bad actor Varun Dhawan — ANDHA DHUN that deserve these epithets. But you see, conflating the other films I mentioned before with these is seriously unjustified. I do not mind folks saying, CHICHORE is a hit and I loved it because it took you back to your ‘shagging’ — in the Indian context, that is an independent affair with Bunty — days and there was a lot of nostalgia and that’s what connected, but it’s an average film as-a-whole. But trying to shove it as a ‘great’ film just because it’s ‘connected’ and made crores is ridiculous. When are we going to realize that because your 30% is equal to 100% in your books, that’s not in my case. A person scoring 35/100 is a passed student, so is a person scoring 65 and so is a person scoring 95. But you know why one’s called a rank-holder and why one’s a passed candidate, right? Can we please have this common-sensical, ‘nuanced’ categorization?

Where would you put movies like THE KING OF COMEDY or JAANE BHI DO YAARON by today’s yard-stick? They would be bloody Haley’s Comets!! And they would come more often!

An Jo, you’ve hit the nail in your reply. You’ve articulated rather well what I’ve been meaning to express myself with such “coming of age” films for a long time. Vicky Donor/Piku/Pink are classic examples and the true yardstick for content cinema in today’s times. I’d even have a place for Tumbbad. Despite making a wave when it released, that too for a short time, it seems to be forgotten by the same group of people who hail the likes of Badhai Ho and Dream Girl as “masterpieces.” The defining moment for Ayushmann remains Andhadhun for me, and I doubt if anything else he does will come close to replicating the hammer strong impact of the boldness of its storytelling. No wonder why it didn’t have an all India acceptance like his more audience friendly films have done.

The other examples quoted above, including Dream Girl, are wearing away their novelty factor already. I still prefer this stuff to Akshay Kumar cinema but till when can one rely on “earthiness” to get away with gaping holes in the script. Ayushmann still saves the day because of his spontaneity but this has now become a modern-day formula to earn brownie points from multiplex audience who couldn’t know better. Bareilley ki Barfi and Luka Chupi were bad films to put it mildly, hiding behind the so-called small town sensibilities which overstayed their welcome. The others weren’t bad, enjoyable even as stated in my review, but time might not be on their side when looked at in retrospect.

@Tony, An Jo : For me Vicky Donor would continue to remain the most landmark and coming of age cinema in these times of urban metropolitan multiplex era. Not only is it a laugh riot, it touches upon topics that were neither discussed in living rooms and nor did anyone dare making “commercial” cinema on themes like these. Its only post the stupendous success of VD in urban India that film makers got the idea to experiment with the Shubh Mangal’s and Toilet’s of the world (none of which are a patch on the subtlety and underplaying tone of VD). While I regard Andhadhun and Tumbadd as good films while Badhaai Ho and Chhichhore would fall in the “one time watch” category, VD remains a true masterpiece in all aspects in my opinion. Easily the best film of the decade in the comic-drama genre for me (Kahaani being the best in thriller while Dangal remains the best in the sports-drama genre). Although Madras Cafe & Piku too were wonderful films, VD would perhaps always remains Shoojit’s unparalleled triumph (something akin to A Wednesday for Neeraj Pandey).
