  3. Both Forrest Gump and Vikram Vedha are good films and Aamir’s next 2 are remakes of them. Chances are both will turn out good pieces of cinema. The challenge will be to live up to the reputations of the originals. Not sure of the material in Mogul though. But Aamir not letting it go suggests the script is good. Good times for Aamir fans with 3 back to back films on his platter.

  4. I wonder who’re these distributors willing to invest in Saif Ali Khan films nowadays. Lal Kaptaan carries zero buzz & zero anticipation. A monumental disaster on the cards. Being a billionaire nawab himself, Saif should have some mercy on distributors & exhibitors and stick to Netflix or Amazon unless he gets to play second fiddle to Aamir or Srk in any of their films. I remember the troll Krk recently remarking that even Saif’s own family member Kunal Khemu might have greater fan following today than Saif. For once I did agree with him.

    • I like almost all Saif’s performances these days. His BO pull is probably gone but he does act well. And being rich doesn’t mean he can sell his film. When distributors know they are going to make a loss, they won’t buy. But by that logic then half of all the films won’t get released.

  5. Top Twenty Grossers All Formats – Saaho 9th War 12th
    Wednesday 16 October 2019 11.45 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Saaho finished with a total of 302 crore nett across India making it the ninth highest NETT grosser of all time if we take business of all Indian films across all formats. The top ten sees six films from the Hindi film industry and four from the South but the top three films are all from South and they are the only 3 films to cross 40 crore nett.

Its pretty easy to see the judge the difference between these three films and the Hindi films and that is these films are larger than life and made for cinema and that is why they put up big numbers in Hindi markets which they needed for these huge numbers. The 400 crore nett number is still proving elusive for Hindi cinema which it should not as ticket prices are higher than two years back and taxes are far less. So even if GROSS records are not being hit, the NETT records should be easily achievable.

Saaho had a so so performance in the South and had it performed there as expected it would have meant the top four being non Hindi films. War is probably aiming at a top ten finish also and presently stands at number twelve. The top twenty NETT grossers on all formats across India are as follows.

    1. Bahubali – The Conclusion – 1115.86 crore

    2. Bahubali – The Beginning – 418.54 crore

    3. 2.0 – 413.30 crore

    4. Dangal – 387.29 crore

    5. Tiger Zinda Hai – 339.00 crore

    6. PK – 337.72 crore

    7. Sanju – 334.58 crore

    8. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 315.49 crore

    9. Saaho – 302.31 crore

    10. Sultan – 300.67 crore

    11. Padmaavat – 295.46 crore

    12. War – 277 crore apprx (14 days)

    13. Kabir Singh – 276.34 crore

    14. Dhoom 3 – 271.53 crore

    15. Uri – The Surgical Strike – 244.01 crore

    16. Simmba – 239.85 crore

    17. Kick – 211.63 crore

    18. Chennai Express – 207.69 crore

Lol! Why not take the dubbed versions of all Hindi films too if that’s been done for these South films?
In fact why not take a step ahead and include worldwide gross? But we all know why BOI would shy away from it!

      • Worldwide gross they see it privately every day, shed tears, look in the mirror angrily, promise to take revenge and out of the blue come up with articles which are cringeworthy, strange, illogical and embarrassing. Bollywood style!!

        Like

        • How’s it bollywood style when the article is motivated to degrade bollywood itself? As i’ve always maintained, its either gotta be Hindi vs Hindi or Telugu vs Telugu in gross terms (as Hindi & southern domestic markets barring B’lore & Hy’bad city are totally isolated) or its gotta be worldwide vs worldwide all version together (in which case boi’s propaganda of degrading multiplex films & promoting pungent retrograde masala junk would be ripped apart). Either ways, even Saaho is an outright Hindi film itself as it was shot entirely in Hindi with an actor who enjoys huge following in the Hindi belt & a bollywood actress too. 2.0’s Hindi version too had Akshay & some of the rest mouthing dialogues in Hindi and with Akshay’s presence it became a pan India film too, releasing in 7500 screens.

          • It’s useless to segregate. We are only asking for all India or WW collections on gross basis – all those splits of Hindi vs Hindi etc can still be done.
It’s like any big company reports it’s big numbers and then segments after for deeper drivers. Here in India you don’t get the big numbers just the nett and shoddy contrived comparisons to suit oneself.

            Like

          • All India, all versions has no relevance as the interiors of AP/Telangana, TN etc are as alien for a Hindi film as the Chinese or Japanese market. Outright Hindi films like War & Padmaavat hardly find 100-150 screens for their dubbed versions down south while dubbed Telugu films find almost 4000 screens in Hindi along with face value for the Hindi version (Akshay in 2.0, Ajay/Alia in RRR, Sanjay in Kgf 2). Bahubali was a once in a generation exception, a Sholay moment but even there it was the cult popularity of part 1 that generated the hype, anticipation & craze for part 2. Part 1 itself was a healthy 120 cr in Hindi but not extraordinary. Its unfair to compare Hindi films getting 4500 screens pan India with Telugu or Tamil films which release in 7500 screens, which are multilingual & have healthy face value for the Hindi audience too. In the scenario of an “all languages, all versions” comparison only a global comparison would make sense, that too only for those films which release in the Chinese market.

I’d use Taran Adarsh numbers for War all India. They include dubbed versions.

Wake up guys it’s ALL INDIA and nearly 2020, not exclusive to a specific language or region. We are not in dark ages.

          • Its not as easy or straightforward as it seems. Hindi films that get dubbed in Telugu & Tamil hardly get 100-150 screens in the interiors of AP/TN while mainstream Telugu films being dubbed into Hindi are being distributed by the likes of Dharma & Excel & release in a good 4000+ screens in Hindi. Plus the likes of 2.0, Saaho & now the upcoming RRR have huge Bollywood star value which makes these films commercially viable for the Hindi audience while being lapped up by their home audience too. For an outright Hindi film like War or Dangal, the AP/TN & Karnataka interiors (outside Hy’bad & Bangalore city) is as much an alien territory as the Chinese or Japanese market. While the likes of 2.0, RRR and the upcoming Kgf 2 are already almost as much Hindi films as they are regional. Bahubali 2 can be kept aside as that’s a once in a generation Sholay moment in Indian cinema & that too came about only thanks to the anticipation, craze & buzz created by BB1 which had zero face value in the Hindi belt & hence despite its sensational trend and word of mouth couldn’t go beyond a healthy 120 Cr nett. Since then, the likes of 2.0 & Saaho both release in 7500+ screens pan India while Dangal, Padmaavat and War hardly got 4000-4500. Hence for comparison of all versions, all languages, only a worldwide vs worldwide makes sense that too only for films that see a China release. Else we need to stick to Hindi vs Hindi in which case War as of now stands at 275 Cr compared to the 280 odd of Kabir Singh (which didn’t have a regional dubbed release).

      2019:

I will be keenly watching the fate of Dabangg3 Vs Good News. This is not a direct clash but still a semi clash sort of. I will not be surprised if both does more or less same business and that would be another Jhatka for Salman’s fans. They are already reeling under slowdown in the business of Salman’s movies but not accepting it. Saying an Eid Release and doubly priced Bharat made 5 Cr more than Mission Mangal is already an acceptance of defeat. Even when 2point0 and Kesari’s performance are not invoked and that Housefull 4 will easily sail through (will also be a bigger hit than Dabangg3), it is clear that in last 2 years Akshay’s films have overtaken Salman’s.
Data, perception, popularity and power – it is all favouring Akshay now.

      BUT

Salman’s fans have taken Eid 2020 on their ego. This is the final frontier for those fans who can be quite abusive if you try to engage with in a debate. They are going bonkers ever since Suryavanshi was announced on Eid and then preponed and then Laaxmi was confirmed. I can understand their rage. It is like Pakistan who suddenly realise that Kashmir is gone after article 370 was reversed.

And as a keen observer of trends, i am more confident about trending of Laaxmi Bomb and almost certain that Laxxmi bomb would do 50% more business than Radhe. Likh ke de rahein hain. But both will be far less than Suryavanshi and Prithviraj.

Cinema is a medium to explore and not to restrict. If Akshay does a Housefull 4 one in 1 year, i would never appreciate that. But look at him man-

            A superb villain in 2point0
            A warrior in Kesari
            A scientist in Mission Mangal
            A crazy king in Housefull

in last 12 months. His next 6 are all in diverse genres. He is doing a film like Housefull after years and reinventing successfully which other stars find it so hard to do (reinvention).

I am in awe of his abilities and his range. To be frank, Shivaay is jealous of this. Tell me one superstar who can pull off Bala. No Aamir, Hrithik, SRK can pull this off…Salman and Devgn can try but he cannot match. I can only see Ranveer doing it.

So this makes me clap when AKshay attempt this so brilliantly and successfully. It also makes me wonder of the limited cinematic understanding of those who cannot appreciate this.

Other thing is there are 2 genres which are not made everytime – Uber auctioneers like War and Slapstick comedy like Housefull 4.
I love these genres and usually tend to like them a lot. These genres are loved every where in india and by every class.

Few actually trying to make Housefull-4 a B centre movie but they know and fear the business the A centres multiplex will do. It will be by and large the same audience who like War and Dangal that will come for Housefull 4. It is entertainment after all.

However slapstick comedy too can be genuinely funny instead of just silly, lame rehased junk that’s being fed by franchises like Golmaal, Dhamaal & HF. The best examples of genuinely funny slapstick films would be Andaaz Apna Apna & Akshay’s very own Hera Pheri. Bachchan pulled off a classic slapstick act in Namak Halaal back in his hey days. Any kinda comedy’s gotta be genuinely funny, not corrosive junk like the Shetty’s, Bazmee’s and Farah/Sajid’s of the industry make to fill their coffers. PS, even 3 Idiots’ got plenty of slapstick moments esp with Chatur on screen. Genuinely funny one’s.

  11. War has done 295 cr till Saturday and is bound to cross 300 cr today. Doubt if HF4 or Dabangg3 can beat its end total. Its after 13 years that HR got a highest grosser of the year for Bollywood since Dhoom2 in 2006, in the same genre.

    • If it happens, HR will break Aamir’s “record” of a 12 year gap between HGOTYs. SRK, if he ever has another HGOTY, will have an even bigger gap. Dilip Kumar has the all time record here with a 20 year gap between Ganga Jamuna and Kranti.

    • I’m betting on Dabangg 3 (Hindi) to beat War (Hindi) total as for Hindi domestic grossers, purely Hindi vs Hindi collections need to be considered. However, If War indeed manages the best among the lot in Hindi, it would be a 4th for HR (only behind the Khan’s among whom SRK has the least with 5). Ranbir’s got 1 among the new comers (although had Padmaavat had a full release it would easily have crossed Sanju), Prabhas has 1 while Akshay & Ajay are yet to open account. Akshay’s best bet seems HF4 or Prithviraj while Ajay’s best bet is in the Hindi version of Rajamouli’s next RRR where he’d be in a supporting role.

      • I remember there was a time during the 90s when various trade journalists or newspapers awarded the ‘Star of the Year’ by doing a balancing act taking into account the actors who have given the highest amounts of hits and taking into account how big the hits were. During those times, actors were working in more films simultaneously, so the hits counts and the hits versus flops ratio mattered a lot. It was not really only about the single highest grosser.

So, in 1998 for e.g, Salman was Star of the Year when he had several hits like Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya, Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai , Bandhan (a big hit in the interiors) and a important cameo in KKHH. SRK, on the other had the biggest blockbuster (KKHH) but had 2 flops (Dil Se and Duplicate). So, when hits were tallied up, the likes of Taran and Komal gave it to Salman.

I think most actors today seem to doing less work (except for Akshay and Ayushman), so taking into account the hits count may be unfair on the rest. But still, the sole highest grosser should not be the only benchmark. It limits things way too much. By that perspective, Sunny Deol had 3 highest grossers of the year within a spell of 10-11 years. He was a big draw at that time but I don’t think he was dominating that era as much these stats may infer.

        • In the same vein, HR’s 3 highest grossers of the year may be very deceiving. He has been great in spells. But over the last 10 years or so, he has done disappearing acts or underperformed and it a no-brainer that the likes of Ajay and Akshay have been way more relevant pr prolific BO-wise. I am full of praises for HR’s comeback and very glad to see this year’s success. I am sure his ceiling may be right among the highest ones currently if he chooses his next projects well enough. But limiting stats to the highest grossing movie of the year may be quite deceiving.

The simple question is why not Akshay? What has limited his ability in 25+ years not to strike at all? I mean Ranbir has done it. Hollywood and south dubbed have too. No one doubts Akshay is successful. That is not a doubt.

However then looked at for a particular performer for over a period of 2-3 decades, its a somewhat accurate indicative of consolidated stardom over an extended period of time. Akshay & Ajay might have remained more “relevant” than HR over the last 6 years (thanks to more number of films) but one cannot deny the fact that neither Ajay & not even Akshay have ever witnessed the kind of popularity & craze witnessed by HR during his “peak” in 2000, 2003 & 2006 (the after effects of which are still being felt till today with War breaking the opening record on day 1 while Agneepath did the same in 2012 when HR was well past his peak). Popularity & craze witnessed during an actor’s peak phases is what stardom is all about. Not so much about delivering consistent low end hits through economically viable films, or else Emraan Hashmi would be a top bill between 2008-2011 while Ayushmann would be #2 right now after Akshay.

It provides a much better balanced perspective. The whole point was merely about this: Biggest Yearly grossers do not always reveal the whole story.

If, for e.g. Dabang 3 ends up with 310cr while War ends at 300cr, it shouldn’t mean that Salman has owned the year. Bharat worked only moderately well, so it does come into the balance.

However the only things Akshay’s ahead on are volume and # of hits. Only in 07 did he have an opening record (SIK), that too got smashed within weeks by RNBDJ and Ghajini. He’s never come close again. Getting to lifetime records or overseas or whatever is difficult. If it hasn’t already happened it’s difficult.
Hrithik floated for years and BANG in one year he’s smashed opening day record! Only really Hrithik, SRK, Salman and Aamir have shown this capability.
If it happens for Akshay Kumar I’ll be there to applaud Naveen’s lifelong dream. Maybe soon with HF4!

Here is a counter logic to beat the current No 1 star.

To beat Akshay’s model of HITs since last 1 year (2point0 – 185 Cr, Kesari – 155 Cr, Mission Mangal – 204 Cr) , you need to give a blockbuster every year. If it is Highest grosser it just means it is a blockbuster. Highest grosser also depends on other releases. So many times those are not in your hand.

So far i do not see anyone doing it and I see Akshay only doing better every year since last 3 years.

I do concede that not having highest grosser even once goes against Akshay. He doesn’t stand tall.

      BUT, here is my hope.

He is the only star whose next releases look better than previous releases. No other star’s next movie is looking better than their last. Tell me one.

Having watched War, it is Hrithik’s film, first and foremost. He is the biggest winner in there. Tiger lends him a tremendous supporting hand (it is Tiger’s best all-round performance until now), but make no mistake, HR is the main guy in there.

    3. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 445 cr
    4. Sanju – 439 cr

So underline thing is Gross collection vis a vis distributor cost remains the best way to compare. Isn’t it?

    • Tanhaji is sure shot hit. Does Ajay have enough dare to show the true story where Saif’s character Uday Rathod will kill Tanhaji? Tanhaji will die in the end but he might kill Uday as well before his death in the movie. Like the cheap way Bhansali made Khilji’s sidekick kill Shahid in Padmaavat(when its not even true by any stretch of imagination).

The last fifty years has seen Diwali dominated by two actors, Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan

The biggest blockbusters released on Diwali since 1970 are as follows. There could be some big blockbusters before 1970 but that is something to be checked for next Diwali. The list consists of 23 films which have proved to be SUPER HIT or better with a Diwali release. The films before 1994 have not been tabulated to the exact figure so an apprx figure is given.

      1. Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978) – 550 crore apprx
      2. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) – 461 crore
      3. Mard (1985) – 425 crore apprx

    • Krrish 3 did 19 Cr in Hindi way back in 2013 being a huge franchise film. Ideally, adjusted for inflation, HF4 which is a huge franchise in itself (perhaps not as big as the Koi Mil Gaya/Krrish franchise) should be chasing at least 25 Cr (if not more) on the same Dhanteras release.

      • Krrish 3 opening was very very big. I don’t think anyone comes close to Hrithik in this uber action genre.

Interestingly Boxofficeindia has deleted all the pages for Krish3 which gave daily numbers. It now has only one page. This has never happened.

This had Day 1 number. Now this page doesn’t exist.

        http://boxofficeindia.com/boxnewsdetail.php?page=shownews&articleid=6194&nCat=

25 Cr looks very tough esp with 2 mid sized films taking 700-800 screens each. They will be decimated but the screen loss will not help to get this number.

40 Cr+ on Monday is what would compensate this. Housefull 4 can be the biggest Diwali Grosser if the movie turns out as per the trailer.

  17. Now Akshay has entered the Steven Smith zone…every release one record broken and new one to make.

    Like

    • Lies. The only record Akshay Kumar has broken is having so many successes without actually breaking a record!

      Like

      • Without going into much details – 2 of the movies tagged as hits are outright flops and that too in succession. – Brothers and Singh is Bling with neverthless Karan Johar and Prabhu Deva!

        Like

      • This is lie

But Akshay must have a record of giving 5-6 disasters within a year

Police force(May 2004), Aan, Meri biwi ka jawab nahi, Mujhse Shaadi karogi(hit), Hatya, Aitraaj, Ab tumhare hawale watan saathiyo, Insaan(Jan 2005)

All movies except MSK and Aitraaz are disasters.

        6 disasters in 8-9 months.

        • I think he gave 14 flops then. Any other star would have got evaporated, but not Akshay. He worked harder and…

What a turn around since then !!

Bollywood 2017-2020 will be Akshay Kumar years. 4 years of dominance.

    • Akshay Kumar’s hits include- Holiday, Entertainment, The Shaukeens, Baby, Gabbar Is Back, Brothers, Singh Is Bliing, Airlift, Housefull 3, Rustom, Jolly LLB 2, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Padman, Gold, 2.0, Kesari and Mission Mangal.

Clean HITs: Holiday, Baby, Gabbar, Airlift, Housefull3, Rustom, Jolly, Toilet, 2.0, Kesari, Mission Mangal

So out of 17, this is 11.

Other 6 were semi hits. None of them flopped due to the controlled budget.

Rajesh Khanna’s hits include – Aradhana, Ittefaq, Doli, Bandhan, Do Raaste, The Train, Sachaa Jhutha, Safar, kati Patang, Aan Milo Sajna, Anand, Maryada, Haathi Mera Saathi, Amar Prem, Andaz, Dushman and Apna Desh.

I am sure this list also has few films that were not clean hits.

So this evens out the analysis.

    • Another article about consecutive successes by Akshay, which i think most would agree-

If Housefull 4 meets expectations of film analysts, it will be Akshay’s 11th consecutive box office hit in last three years. Starting from Airlift (2016), till Mission Mangal (2019), the actor has not given a single flop since 2016.

    • Good change. See, I am an eternally optimistic person. 🙂

I think the producer, Rohit Shetty has correctly removed each and every trace that could link this movie to the original Satte Pe Satta. Else any comparison would have hurt the film.

Now the movie with a new title and storyline looks like a new film. There could be 2 songs which would be used but that would go like a remix now.

Farha has to gain back her magic which i saw and liked in Main Hoon Naa.
