  2. Mardaani 2 and Chhapaak both grossed around 18 crore on their opening weekends. Panga should hope to match it or exceed it. But could be difficult with Tanhaji and Street Dancer.

    • panga is a fictional story, right? not based on somebody who is real.

      • Yes, Panga and Mardaani 2 are fictional stories. I’m comparing them because they rely on the leading actress. Although, perhaps it is more appropriate to compare genres, as these three films are very different.

  6. Few men hold the charisma to lighten up a dark room by their mere presence. Award shows fail to move him even an inch. He doesn’t need to get clicked next to pout-making beauties to tell he’s very much around. Social media isn’t a necessary strength. How can it ever be, for the man has often remained so incessantly driven to march on for meaningful social causes that lack superficiality?

He didn’t need to run around trees. Nor did he have to wear red sweaters on white velvety trousers going all hunky dory in Switzerland.

He’s stayed at sufficient distance from shenanigans – so much of the contemporary culture’s buzzword for stardom- and preferred instead to put his attentive focus on narrating moving stories. That is how fitting tales like Secret Superstar are born.

Even if it means this grandiose figure of immense humility- our very own Tom Hanks of Bollywood- kept himself tugged subtly in the sidelines, content in handing a young actor the crux of the story. Yet he didn’t allow the brooding star to be burdened and shouldered the challenge through that effervescent wit.

In Aamir Khan’s world- where mediocrity cannot be spelled- it is that natural incandescence that keeps him in business but ever through a respectable body of work.

Truth be told, watching Khan’s films for close to two and half decades has been an exercise in self-education. It’s entertainment minus the cheekiness and boisterousness; the kind of stuff showbiz glitter thrives on.

When he doesn’t act in a film like Dhobi Ghat, he chooses to produce it. When he doesn’t have any role whatsoever to play in a film like Peepli Live, he chooses to put his creative energies to focus on taking the film to a pan-India viewership.

A sedate charisma on the screen and a figure of immense humility off it, Aamir Khan at 53 is going strong. We are thankful, in fact, grateful that through Khan’s epic body of work we’ve walked through several emotional rollercoaster rides of life, bettered so many turnstiles.

It is incredible how well and frequently does the man willingly undergo enormous processes of self-development? You feel you grow with Aamir as he goes from being a clueless but affable alien to being a visitor content having been on earth. He mocked at the world’s funny ways but didn’t lament or throw an insult.

You feel the pain as he suffers in Sarfarosh and enjoys his self-deprecatory humor in Rang De Basanti. Aamir’s movies are far more involving at a personal as well textural level.

You instantly identify with the art teacher in Taare Zameen Par; it’s like being reminded of the great virtue called compassion in times mired by greed and self-involvement. At the same time, he leaves you gutted, somewhat flummoxed and withdrawn at the same time in complex characters like Talaash.

Good actors act well the part thrown at them. Great actors become the part expected of them.

In an age where his contemporaries are either bathing in the afterglow of big-budget blockbusters or the hoopla from generating millions of social media fan- Aamir is going from one project to another unfazed by what’s happening around them.

It speaks well of a man who seems content in either case- whether an enormously interesting Talaash fails to fire at the box office or a PK breaks boundaries that even cinema fails to reduce.

Yet all these times, we often forget that Aamir’s quintessential versatility stems from his innate goodness. Yes, it’s a very Tom Hanks- kind of genuineness that forms a mushrooming cloud whilst a lot of our world is besieged by darkness, morphed by duplicity.

Aamir Khan seems like the guy who wouldn’t mind traveling in an auto.

He doesn’t make news when he buys a fancy car, the sort of guy who would enter the Bandra Gymkhana and willingly play a set of chess with young minds. He could be found taking a stroll by the beach holding a book in hand, chewing gum instead of wearing a sterling blazer entering a premium eatery in Versova.

How often has simplicity shone so brightly on a Bollywood A-lister as in the case of Bollywood’s Mr. Dependable?

It was heartening to find Aamir shaking a leg, breaking into some bhangra moves at China when Dangal created quite a storm. Yet, he happens to be the guy who would help your mummy in a retail store, giving her a hand in picking up some packets.

But that told, Khan seldom attempts to wrestle with others in the Dangal called Indian film industry. Few seem as happy working as Aamir does. He’s been there, done that and not done yet. Stylishly simple and simply stylish, Aamir doesn’t need to be a trendsetter for he’s been there a decade and a half back when he gave college going gangly youth reasons to sport a goatee in Dil Chahta Hai.

There can not be a bigger claim to Aamir’s cult-status than suggesting that at a time where two of his famous contemporaries went by megalomaniacal nicknames- Salman being the shirtless Khan, Shah Rukh is the King, Aamir wasn’t anointed one. For quite simply, he didn’t need a nickname.

Just the initials are enough. Aamir Khan; a body of work constantly in progress and a tireless actor unsullied by a world that’s driven by hype.

    Happy 53rd Mr. Khan.

      • Talaash is a good film on its own. Its not as crowd-pleasing as PK or Dangal, but operates more at a ‘personal’ space like Secret Superstar and Dhobi Ghat, although the latter was an art-house film rather than a commercial one. Talaash did quite well at box office too, given its suspense thriller genre with a supernatural touch and an always brooding protagonist. Komal Nahta had it as a ‘Semi-Hit’ or A category film in his yearly classifications.

I think its a lot tougher choice to pick Aamir’s best from the noughties. Choosing one from Lagaan, DCH, RDB, TZP and 3I is a tough one.

Street Dancer is getting very reviews, as i had said day before tanhaji had released that it will be URI of 2020 and it will have to make whatever it can prior to Jan 24th when Street Dancer releases. Tanhaji will still make big bucks in maharashtra but i think it will fall hard everywhere else.

Youth will go all out for Street Dancer.

Celebrating 5 years of the dynamic, thrilling action er BABY. Undoubtedly Neeraj Pandey best since the classic A Wednesday, Baby not only brought Taapsee into the limelight, it also gave a completely new direction to Kumar’s filmography and helped him penetrate into the metropolitan audience and A centers, a section that had never taken him seriously up until then. Most importantly however, this was a game changer among the spy/espionage genre in Hindi cinema for its tight narrative and taut screenplay without the needless “bollywood-ized antics” that WAR & the Tiger films suffered from.

Panga Movie Review : An exhilarating ode to motherhood and chasing dreams!
      TIMES OF INDIA

      Critic’s Rating:
      4.0/5

‘Panga’ is a film that honours the endless hours of work that mothers put behind their families and at the same time urges them to never give up on their dreams and to take that second chance. It not only forms an important voice at a time when so many women drop out of the workforce, it is also an extremely well-crafted film. The humor and emotionally charged moments are deliciously balanced and the outcome is motivating and exhilarating. This ode to motherhood and chasing one’s dreams is a must watch.

      • Lets just say that Indian history of the past 500 years woudve been quite different had it been Aurangzeb walking in chains to get his head chopped off, instead of the supremely syncretic Shah Shuja. That particular period of post-Akbar Mughal palace intrigue is indeed richly textured. Let’s just hope KJo does not mess it all up with all costumes and no substance.

Having said that, people need to calm down a bit, step back, take a deep breathe and understand that had it not been for internecine warfare within, there would be no successful invasions into India, starting from 500BC onwards itself. Why just point to everything after 712AD? And even then, did any Great Hindu Ruler come to the aid of Raja Dahir of Sindh??

First look within to understand the causes of the rifts. Shiv Sena in 2020 has done exactly the same as what had been done 1300 years ago. When a Shiv Sena today can pasa palto for a few pieces of silver, one only needs to imagine the scale of shenanigans that the Great Hindu Kings played amongst each other after 700AD!
I bet if someone did enough research of the 200-1200AD era, the amount of backstabbing and treachery amongst Hindu Kings themselves would far far exceed anything ever seen in history. Was it any surprise that the Mughals consolidated it all in a few short years of their reign?

And mahabharata has hundreds of references to Ramayan, prabhu shriram and also Ancient Puranas, lord kaali, durga, Mahadev Shiva.

Yet we got fan clubs & media houses rant about something as boring & repetitive as Irishman which has nothing more than the same old hoarse voiced mafia maniacs narrating their life of crime sitting in armchairs, something that’s been done to death by Sorcese himself, all of which seem downgraded rip offs of The Godfather films.

Kangana Ranaut and Karan Johar were announced as the recipients of the prestigious Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, on Saturday night. While there is no love lost between them, Kangana put aside the animosity and congratulated Karan for the award.

In an interview with India Today Television, the actor said, “I heartily congratulate him. I think he totally deserves this award. As a producer, the kind of films he backs, whether it is Kesari or Good Newwz, are commendable, as is the position he has worked to achieve. Even though his father gave him a head start, he has risen to the top because of his own efforts and merits.”

But as far as fans are concerned, this is how it goes-
Going by the popular sentiments it is obvious that Akshay Kumar fans wanted the Eid and Christmas clash whereas the fans of Sallu/Aamir were not too keen.
Postponing BP for LSC is like BJP agreeing in 2019 to allow Rahul Gandhi to contest Amethi unopposed. One doesn’t do such things without a behind the scene arrangement/threat or money power.

The former is far too ahead in every aspect, and even suggesting that Akki has a lead is laughable. I won’t ignore Akki’s good box office run in 2019, and he has finally breached the 200 crore barrier on multiple occasions now. It is important to note, however, that none of the stars that once were bankable have delivered on content. Salman is rapidly becoming inconsequential. Dabangg3 is a major underperformer. SRK is now finding it tough to go even beyond 100 crores. Hritik is there, and it just took a War to go past 300 crores. Ranbir has gone past that barrier too, although he is taking things slow now a la Hritik.

With BP clashing, the danger was all there to see despite it doing more business than BP. 300 Cr then was almost impossible (unless its a movie loved all round and with a WoM same as 3 idiots. Even a PK would not suffice). With PK kind of WoM, At best 250 cr, good but not enough. And that’s what was giving nightmares.

There is a theory that Jayshah and Shivaay is spinning that holidays etc doesn’t matter. But they all know that War wouldn’t have done even 250 Cr on a non holiday and with a clash. And bloody it got in ts opening day, a national holiday, a clean release, no clashes, another weekend, and one more national holiday. Gosh…atleast 35-50 Cr add on. I am not discounting the merits of War. I loved the movie. I am only highlighting the importance of getting such an advantage via 2 national holiday + 3 weekend days + a Monday…so total 6 days of enhanced ticket rates and what not yielding a whopping 210 Cr in extended week 1. Otherwise a 160 Cr was on the card and give a clash then 150 Cr.

When i wrote that Tanhaji on a War like release date would have done 100 Cr more, i was quite correct.

A major holiday release gets neutralized by comparatively reduced numbers over the next few days. Films that have a positive word of mouth always will find a way, be it the 2 BB’s or Tanhaji or Dangal. If you cannot see something as crystal clear as this, not my problem. Anyways even with a War like release the Jeetendra of today Lord Kumar would never get a record initial. Like

          • Both are unlikely to be true.
Unlike many, Akshay’s movie doesn’t start with a budget. It begins from a script. He then adds his name as a producer which magnifies the BO potential. The movie is made at the same budget which doesn’t happen with other stars. For example when a salman comes, he asks the producers to spend more. SRK was doing the same till recently. Aamir / Hrithik too does it. So Bhopal becomes Mumbai or New York. New scenes with SFX/action gets created and script goes out of toss in case of several movies. But Akshay goes by the script…no such demands.

When the movie comes, it looks realistic. Padman, Rustom, Good Newwz, Kesari etc are all as per original script. Hrithik followed this model in Super 30 and tasted success. He failed in Guzaarish as he got the script changed.

So the COP of Akshay’s films remains the same and hence low.

    • That’s your POV.

Assuming BP has WoM of Kesari and LSC has WoM of PK, following are my numbers:

BP would have easily made 175 Cr with a day 1 Christmas and 2500 screens clash and two open weeks and 1st Jan as another holiday in week 2. LSC was also min 200 Cr and max 250 Cr.

But once Mr Lele was announced, I downgraded each by 20 Cr and felt this would kill both movie- LSC as well as BP and destory Lele. I then got a hunch one out of the three would move because BP at 150Cr and LSC at 175 Cr would have been bad for both.

Now BP is coming on Good Friday weekend and a 15 Cr pay check. 200 Cr is certain if it comes solo. Overall 50 Cr nett gain.

For LSC 300 Cr is certain if it still comes solo. If Mr Lele moves out then 350 Cr but this is unlikely and can be ruled out now.

Mr Lele would do 100-125 Cr Cr. With BP + LSC it was looking at 90-100 Cr.

    Same product; different outcome.

    • These projections show the lack of maturity and experience regarding BO. Laxmi Bomb will hardly make 150 cr coming with Radhe and F9 on the same day.

Akshay said, “I am thrilled to be working with Aanand L Rai, as I have always admired the way he has showcased his stories. When he narrated the film to me, I said ‘yes’ within 10 minutes. It is a challenging character to play, but at the same time, it is such a special role that my heart just couldn’t say ‘no’ to it. I will remember it for the rest of my life. My combination with Sara and Dhanush truly makes it true to its title — Atrangi! And I know that Aanand, in his special and simple way of storytelling, will only add magic to it. As I said, my heart just couldn’t let this one go.”

    • Akshay’s stardom unlike others is a lot about the characters he plays. He can very well stick to one strong image and stick to it to get big openings.
Just contract how ALR created a script for SRK in Zero deviating from his style of work to this one where he picks Akshay for a role in a movie that needs him and Akshay agreeing to it in 10 minutes.
Can Akshay get any director work for him the way Salman is doing? Well mighty yes. But Akshay is rather doing interesting characters which need not be the main lead. But he does walk away with most of the credits.

  43. Until 2007 when Akshay Kumar fanatics created their own definitions of stardom, popularity was always (& continues to be) measured by the record breakers, Highest annual grossers, all time earners etc, be it within the trade, media or the public at large. There is a reason why films like Mother India, Mughal E Azam, Sholay, HAHK, DDLJ, Gadar or even the second tier blockbusters likes of Sangam, Ganga Jamuna, Zanjeer, MPK, KNPH, KMG, OSO, ETT etc are more revered, remembered and spoken of than the small time hits. The one & only yardstick of stardom is the historic grossers and record breakers. I rest my case here. No more futile, pointless box office discussions from my side on this forum.
