Oscar predix for the year in film 2019

With the 2020s all set to roll in a matter of only a few hours, honouring the films of 2019 will be our vestigial link to the decade gone by. A lot has happened over the last decade… this blog, and the wonderful world of movies that we all love and argue over, has offered us a safe space from all that is out there. Things must change, they always do… and a 2020 vision at least augurs well. But for a nostalgist, certain things, at least the good ones, must also be constant. My inconsistent annual Oscar predictions being something that I would like to keep doing. Here then, on the last day of 2019, are my Oscar predictions for the 92nd Academy Awards. The actual nominations voting open on the 2nd of January, 2020 and the nominees will be announced on the 13th of the same month. The Oscars will be presented this time on the 9th of February, 2020.

The big story this year in the movie world is Netflix, and the prestige clout that it has coveted and poised to be rewarded for. Debates will continue about whether this whole new way of making, streaming and viewing films is a natural evolution for the medium in a fast-changing century or a dying of the cinema both as an aesthetic and as a communal experience, but the future that we were discussing only a few years back when Netflix dropped Beasts Of No Nation is now here.

* There is confusion over which category in screenplay The Two Popes will be submitting for. The general consensus is that it is based on McCarten’s own play The Pope, so it can only be eligible for the Adapted Screenplay category; however, campaigning suggests Netflix vying for Original Screenplay.

# The Makeup and Hair category gets expanded to five nominees from three as in the previous years.

    Great predictions. Knives Out and Uncut Gems are my favorite films this year, however, both are long shots as they do not have the ‘heft’ that Oscars look for. Haven’t seen 1917 and Marriage story yet.

    Once Upon a Time in Hollywood only has pedigree, that’s it – take out Tarantino and that cast, and no studio would have even made it.

    Henry, I would dis-agree with your statement on OUATIH but would be interested in knowing more about your attributing it more to pedigree rather than merit.

    Also, I was thoroughly impressed with Paul Walter’s performance in Richard Jewell.

      Thank you An. Gully Boy was the wrong film for the Oscars from the get go. The Gujarati film Hellaro was the apt film. It checks a lot of the boxes in terms of what the Academy looks for in foreign language films, and especially from India, while staying true to technical and narrative expectations.

      I tried very hard to watch Once upon a Time in Hollywood on plane journey and I couldn’t go beyond half an hour. It was just not my taste. I will give a try once again when it is available on streaming platforms.

    Don’t know about much as I do not follow Hollywood from real close quarters, however I do hope Joaquin Phoenix wins the best actor. His chilling portrayal is the kind that can make the late Heath Ledger applaud from his grave. Ford vs Ferrari is the only other film I have watched in the best film category and that’s just good, didn’t find it great though.

      It is possible that you may win Best Picture but not Best Foreign language; Many voters have seen parasite but in pool of people who have seen all 5 movies, it is possible that people may have liked any of the 4 nominated movies.

      “Every country is invited to submit what it considers its best film to the Academy. Only one film is accepted from each country. The designation of each country’s official submission has to be done by an organization, jury or committee composed of people from the film industry. For example, the British entry is submitted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and the Brazilian entry is submitted by a committee under its Ministry of Culture. Names of the members of the selecting group must be sent to the Academy.

      After each country has designated its official entry, English-subtitled copies of all submitted films are shipped to the Academy, where they are screened by the Foreign Language Film Award Committee(s), whose members select by secret ballot the five official nominations. Final voting for the winner is restricted to active and life Academy members who have attended exhibitions of all five nominated films.     That Parasite win is such a stunner. First time that a foreign language film has taken the top prize. Couldn’t have happened to a better film or filmmaker, even if I may not be amongst those who think Parasite to be the best film ever. For a while there, it seemed like 1917’s night.

    Loved the shoutouts that Mangold got from his Ford V Ferrari tech winners. And Phoenix’s genuine if rambling appeal for reformation in the prevalent cancel culture.

      “I’m full of so much gratitude now. I do not feel elevated above any of my fellow nominees or anyone in this room, because we share the same love – that’s the love of film. And this form of expression has given me the most extraordinary life. I don’t know where I’d be without it.

      But I think the greatest gift that it’s given me, and many people in [this industry] is the opportunity to use our voice for the voiceless. I’ve been thinking about some of the distressing issues that we’ve been facing collectively.

      I think at times we feel or are made to feel that we champion different causes. But for me, I see commonality. I think, whether we’re talking about gender inequality or racism or queer rights or indigenous rights or animal rights, we’re talking about the fight against injustice.

      We’re talking about the fight against the belief that one nation, one people, one race, one gender, one species, has the right to dominate, use and control another with impunity.

      I think we’ve become very disconnected from the natural world. Many of us are guilty of an egocentric world view, and we believe that we’re the centre of the universe. We go into the natural world and we plunder it for its resources. We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow and steal her baby, even though her cries of anguish are unmistakeable. Then we take her milk that’s intended for her calf and we put it in our coffee and our cereal.

      We fear the idea of personal change, because we think we need to sacrifice something; to give something up. But human beings at our best are so creative and inventive, and we can create, develop and implement systems of change that are beneficial to all sentient beings and the environment.

      I have been a scoundrel all my life, I’ve been selfish. I’ve been cruel at times, hard to work with, and I’m grateful that so many of you in this room have given me a second chance. I think that’s when we’re at our best: when we support each other. Not when we cancel each other out for our past mistakes, but when we help each other to grow. When we educate each other; when we guide each other to redemption.

      When he was 17, my brother [River] wrote this lyric. He said: ‘run to the rescue with love and peace will follow.'”

    Happy for BJH. This man is pretty talented, and it’s not the first time he has delivered. Memories of Murder remains one of my favourite films from around the world, and with Parasite he just hits it out of the park. The Koreans have a knack for making original, sensational films from ideas that might sound ridiculous on paper.

    “If the Academy allows, I would like to get a Texas chainsaw, split the Academy Award into five, and share it with all of you.” – These were his words in his acceptance speech. Not an air of arrogance. Also thanked Scorsese’s influence on him as a filmmaker
