Just came back from Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhan

The pattern of taboo topics in a familial setting to make it more accessible to the Hindi speaking, small town/rural belt continues with this film. There are moments of lunacy, and the relatable Indian lingo still draws laughs. However, you can’t help but ask the question: How long do we have to wait before the now-evident pattern to Ayushmann brand of cinema finally dies down?

Every film of the dependable performer is beginning to resemble the other now. While you could always laugh and admire the dialogues (many of them seem improvised) besides the spontaneity of the actors (Gajraj Rao shining the most, ably supported by the dependable bunch comprising Neena Gupta and Manu Rishi), the film is lazily scripted and stretched beyond plausibility. In fact, you take out the homosexuality element, and this won’t be a story that a 60s masala filmmaker would bother about.

The entertainment is still there, and people are still having a good time at Ayushmann films, but the actor lets you down. The cracks were visible in the rendition of his character. All that he brings to the fore is a nose ring and a smooth talking, charming everyman – in short, every on-screen Ayushmann ever.

On the top of it, he hams it up in a performance that seems both “overconfident” and “desperate” to increase his fan base rather than believable. Has he been affected by his recently developed “star image”? Or was he going down the “massy route” because he didn’t believe in the subject?

We’d have to wait for Gulaabi Sitaabo to find out. C’mon man, give us an Andhadhund. Or underplay it like Article 15. Trust your fans to lap up your work. And better still, read the entire script rather than salivating on the idea. No matter how noble or inclusive it was, it deserved a much better script to drive home the point.

    • “you take out the homosexuality element, and this won’t be a story that a 60s masala filmmaker would bother about.”

      Tony, what does this mean?

I think 60s masala filmmaker (which would include Raj Kapoor. Vijay Anand, Raj Khosla, Yash Chopra, Man Mohan desai, BR Chopra, Shakti Samanta and so many more) wouldn’t be bother with about 99% of the films being made today.

The ones you mentioned were the cream of the lot. Don’t otherwise mean to undermine the decade. Was referring to the stale storylines involving star-crossed lovers and parents’ objection being a major conflict

    • Bhai haven’t we already had enough pointless ranting from opportunistic duffers like Swara Bhaskar, Vivek Agnihotri, Anurag Kashyap or Ashok Pandit? These guys were complete unknown entities & flops before they became legendary online trolls post 2014.

  5. Is Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan expected to gross 10 crore today? If it does, that’s a really good number for a film on such a theme. When it was first announced, people were very pessimistic, esp after Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga.

    • All credit should go to ayushman, he has created a following for his films.

      • Indeed. What’s also works with Ayushmann is his choices to stick to mostly the same genre – middle class comedy picking social enigmas to the extent that movie’s star cast too looks more or less same. Soon the pressure of stardom would force him to do things differently or the changing Public taste would force the change.

      • Early Estimates: Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan – Bhoot
        Friday 21 February 2020 23.30 IST
        Box Office India Trade Network

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan has put up good first day numbers of 9.25-9.50 crore nett as per early estimates but its due to the holiday and the real value probably goes down to 7 or maybe even less. It could be the highest Ayushmann Khurana opener but that will depend where the final numbers land in the morning. Dream Girl has the best opening day at 9.43 crore nett.

Bhoot has recorded average first day numbers of 5-5.25 crore nett but again due to the holiday and relea value is 4 crore nett or even less. This genre has to open well to go anywhere and its not really happened though the number looks decent due to the holiday.

        • Have to give to BOI for consistently getting their estimates closer to the final number, notch lower than producers number. They do present final numbers within 12 hours and with little changes.

Wish they had more moderate commentary and consistent classification of movies.

BOI and Producers numbers are the only ones that matters to most now. 90% they are undebatable and fairly accurate.

Taran rules classification – Classification of movies is then left on interpretations and affiliations. Taran gives classification which is reasonably close to mine. His is most popular.

  12. Was reading up on “Ten Stages of Genocide – By Gregory H. Stanton, President, Genocide Watch”, interesting read.

    1. CLASSIFICATION: All cultures have categories to distinguish people into “us and them” by ethnicity, race, religion, or nationality

    2. SYMBOLIZATION: Give names or other symbols to the classifications

    3. DISCRIMINATION: A dominant group uses law, custom, and political power to deny the rights of other groups

    4. DEHUMANIZATION: One group denies the humanity of the other group. Members of it are equated with animals, vermin, insects or diseases

    5. ORGANIZATION: Genocide is always organized, usually by the state, often using militias to provide deniability of state responsibility

    6. POLARIZATION: Extremists drive the groups apart. Hate groups broadcast polarizing propaganda. Motivations for targeting a group are indoctrinated through mass media. Laws may forbid intermarriage or social interaction. Extremist terrorism targets moderates, intimidating and silencing the center

    7. PREPARATION: Plans are made for genocidal killings

    8. PERSECUTION: Victims are identified and separated out because of their ethnic or religious identity. Death lists are drawn up

    9. EXTERMINATION begins, and quickly becomes the mass killing legally called “genocide.” It is “extermination” to the killers because they do not believe their victims to be fully human

    10. DENIAL is the final stage that lasts throughout and always follows genocide

    • We have been going through the 10th stage of the Pandit genocide in J&K forever with even the Supreme Court rejecting pleas for a probe. At times we get the 11th stage where the likes of Barkha kind of justify the genocide.

      • Yes, it was and is sad situation and now whole Kashmir has been on stage 12 if you know what that means.

Like I had said before the people who actually had gone thru partition has totally different perspective than those with RSS mindset. See interviews of dharmendra, Chopra, Kapoor etc and others who were actually impacted by partition and on same token someone like vidhu vinod chopra was an impacted hindu in Kashmir unless like you and I.

        • A Gregory H Stanton mentioning something does not make it a gospel truth. India has been on stage 6 right since 1947, irrespective of the political party in power. The fact that the Indian masses, the public at large have allowed successive political parties to polarize & dictate terms (the British, Mughals, Rajputs, Khilji’s etc did the same pre 19th century) naturally points towards a certain amount of emotional imbalance & sentimental instability among the gullible Indian public at large. Its this instability that allowed the British to divide and rule, the same instability that allowed the Gandhi dynasty to be in power, the same emotional instability that puts narcissists like Amit Shah in power, the same instability that makes rank opportunists like Swara Bhaskar, Anurag Kashyap & Vivek Agnihotri famous on social media (2-3 crore people discuss them everyday while their art work hardly gets 20-30 Lakh viewers on a good day, Twitter is their claim to fame. You’d never see genuinely popular folks who’ve made a name for themselves via their professional skills like SRK, Aamir, Tendulkar, PV Sindhu, Ratan Tata etc etc rant all day all night for or against the government machinery like these clowns).

        • Oh, you are justifying genocides because people like vidhu vinod chopra have different views. Did they even lost anyone? These people have power and privileges and big setup outside kashmir. Also, they had political alliances and big platform to say something. What about those whose voices are silenced forever?
What about the hundred of thousands people who are in refugee camps and even after 40 years haven’t got their life settled properly or have proper citizenship. No media person goes to them, they have no platform to raise their voice. Many of them just died in last 40 years waiting for their return.
Talking about vinod chopra, did the kashmiri women’s voice who criticize and cried during shikara screening has no value but vvc has to raise his biased opinion every day, so vvc’s opinion becomes the truth? Most of kashmiri refugees don’t have money or time or even interest to go to such movies, first they are dejected, depressed and others are busy in their survival struggle.
Such propaganda movie’s rejection shows the mirror to people like vvc who have been backed by underworld linked financiers for their productions since 90s. Moviemakers are sadly taken as intellects just because they have platform to speak, industry which has deep roots in underworld backed from dubai, has no opinion of themselves.

          • There still are Hindus trapped in Pakistan lacking the wherewithal to escape their misery. At least 25 pubescent Sindhi girls per month are kidnapped, raped and then converted in some of the most extremist dargahs (which btw have abrogated their original gentle sufism to the more extremist salafism). At least 20,000 Christian girls have been sold to Chinese middlemen and trafficked off to that country.
There has always been a stream of these persecuted people into India. My grandparents were let in after Partition and granted Indian citizenship. However, no one even knows when the Congress decided to stop giving citizenship to these refugees. The CAA was meant to rehabilitate all these unfortunate hundreds of thousands. However, such benevolence just cannot sit right with liberal folks in India. Unke gale se utrega hi nahi. To pacify them, the BJP even decided to forego all those who migrated after 2014. And yet these liberal monsters wont have any of it.

No one says a thing when the US issues refugee visas to persecuted minorities. Tibetans, Somalis and other African communities, and even some Sikhs have availed of such generosity by the USG. However, even liberals in the US have condemned Modi’s action to do something similar for persecuted Hindus.
The lesson is quite clear: Hindus, ya’ll are on your own, aint no one in the world gonna listen to your woes. Get Up and Grab your rights with your own strength.

        • Why should I read interviews of these privileged twats when I know my own grandparents had to abandon everything they owned during partition and had to restart their life in a ghetto thousands of miles away from their homeland. I do find it amusing that when it comes to genocide of Hindus, people who usually deal in Hitler analogies are suddenly all about “perspective” and “nuance” and so on with past it hacks like VVC becoming the last word.

  14. In a first, Yash Raj Films directed to pay Rs 10,000 to consumer who felt deceived because of exclusion of a song from the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Fan

ByBollywood Hungama News NetworkCreated: Feb 20, 2020 – 1:23 pm IST

Film production company Yash Raj Films has been directed by the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) to pay Rs.10,000 as compensation to a teacher in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad who was disappointed by the exclusion of a song from Shah Rukh Khan- starrer Fan.

Afreen Fatima Zaidi was disappointed that the song ‘Jabra Fan’ was excluded in the movie despite being used in the promotional trailer. The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) held the exclusion of song ‘Jabra Fan’ as “unfair trade practice” and said the person who decides to watch the movie after seeing the song in promotion is bound to feel “deceived, disappointed and dejected”.

With this observation, Justice VK Jain (presiding member) has directed Yash Raj Films to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation to the Petitioner, who was disappointed by the exclusion of the song.

Meanwhile, the NCDRC rejected the contention of the YRF that the producer and the actor of the movie had publicly declared the song which forms part of the promo would not be a part of the movie. The commission said that it was insufficient claiming that the person who viewed the trailer may not have necessarily watched the said interview.

The commission said that when the producer of a movie shows the promos of the said movie on TV channels, and other platforms and such promos include a song, any person watching the promo would be justified in believing that the movie would contain the song shown in the said promos.

Rejecting the YRF’s claims that the woman cannot be called a consumer, the commission said she paid the price for the movie tickets, which is shared among the exhibitor, distributor, and producer of the movie. Zaidi had approached the district forum which had rejected her petition. She later moved the Maharashtra State Consumer Commission, which directed the YRF in 2017 to compensate her with Rs 10,000 along with litigation cost of Rs 5,000.

Very good decision by court. I have been deceived many times too.

Boney shares a close working relationship with the Zee Studios. So he allowed them to go ahead (with the new Mr. India). But Anil, on hearing of the project, was aghast. And he’s right in being upset. He is not only the leading man of Mr. India but also the producer’s brother.”

With Anil Kapoor’s daughter Sonam Kapoor coming out against the proposed project, the battle lines are clearly drawn. Let’s see how the matter is resolved.

    • Shubh Mangal And Bhoot Falter On Monday

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan and Bhoot faltered on Monday as they showed drops. The collections of Shubh Mangal Zyaada Saavdhan have actually dropped more but that is probably because Bhoot has hardly any collections.

The early estimates for Monday are 3.50 crore nett for Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan and 2 crore nett for Bhoot. These are major falls from Friday but that was a holiday. If we take fair value numbers then Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is around 50% down and Bhoot is around 45% down. These are basically normal weekday trends but films had to be better than normal because neither took great starts.

The collections of Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan are now 34 crore nett plus after four days and is probably looking at week of 42-43 crore nett. Bhoot stands at 18 crore nett after four days and is probably looking at a week of 23-24 crore nett.

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan could still emerge an Average fare depending on the second week but it has been rejected outside Delhi NCR with East Punjab and Rajasthan doing well for three days. The big problem was it did not get support at metros like Mumbai, Pune and Kolkata.

    • even Vicky Kaushal

  19. I saw Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan. I found it quite a dishonest film. The whole thing about a gay relationship… It’s merely the taboo of the day.

Ayushmann has tackled sperm donation, erectile dysfunction and male baldness. Sexuality was just another item to tick off on his checklist. His performance is hollow posturing, punctuated by speechy outbursts about lgbt oppression.

Gajraj and Neena are good and they help ground the film with relatable performances.

Aug 2021 – Action comedy (producer – Ekta Kapoor)
Dec 2021 – Dhoom 4 (or an action film confirmed with YRF)

    • 8 films in 2 years. But most will be commission earners or Overflow only.

      • True. I think Akshay is also not planning anything more in terms of Box Office. He remains consistent with his approach. He is surely choosing topics which are more interesting now.

  25. Even IB officers & Policemen aren’t safe in this society. Heartfelt condolences to everyone impacted by the Delhi arson & riots. Evidently a joint operation of 2 (or more) different political factions who masquerade at being opposite in ideologies but factually are nothing more than 2 sides of the same coin attempting to divide & polarize the the already gullible society on a daily basis. Its no surprise that both Kejriwal & Shah seem unaffected by the happenings while goons & thugs on their payroll continue running riot.

  26. There is something more sinister at play, you can’t just take out an IB officer w/o some Intel. Modi and Shah are between a rock and a hard place. the deaths and violence are meant to provoke them into coming down on the rioters with a heavy hand. Once they do, they are going to further demonized as anti-minority. The Opposition parties are adding more fuel to fire with their statements. Interesting days ahead!

  30. Was thinking about this over the weekend; I used to argue with Satyam a lot really didn’t agree much with him except when it came to love of masala films.

However, around couple years back, I remember him making couple points I think to Rocky which at the time I didn’t think much of but now when I think about it, it’s making a lot of sense. Perhaps Satyam saw it coming all along how the condition in Modi/Shah India will be. Satyam had said (I don’t remember exact words):

    1) India of today is no longer Man Mohan Desai India. There’s a much deeper meaning in this than what’s on surface. One needs to understand Desai films, understand Desai history and where he lived, etc.
    2) India of today (Modi/Shah) wants you to think that there is no difference between Akbar and Aurangzeb. Once your mind is set to that, rest is easy. And there’s a deeper meaning in this too in sense, not just Akbar and Aurangzeb, but muslims.

Brain has been washed up so badly that there’s no coming back from this. Modi/Shah will escalate this even more because they can’t win election on economics, it has to be based on religious ground.

And of course, now i’m a commie, libtards, etc since i don’t perscribe to hate or follow bjp blindly…

It’s gonna be tough away from a blog which I inadvertently opened after every few minutes to check updates on box office releases, reviews, BO discussions and whatnot. But with such people around, I’d prefer keeping my mind from reading such bullcrap that’s repeated pretty often..

    Good luck, all

    • Been there, done that. My commiserations, of course.

This isn’t the same blog where intelligent discussions on cinema used to take place. It has become a place where some primitive creatures come to spew their poison, every time they crawl out of their hiding place.

I have come to accept that. The only way I happen to survive such an incredible amount of stupidity is by not reading it. I look at the names against posts and if they belong to my bullshit filter, I just scroll past them. Ignorance indeed is bliss!

No wonder, Satyam has abandoned this place for good. Having said that, I find his ignorance on this matter quite troubling.

I’ll leave you with a passing, if not entirely sobering thought: if you end up engaging with idiots, part of the problem, unfortunately, lies with you!

Best wishes in case you decide not to come back. Reserve your energy for better outcomes in life.

      • Agree Saket, but we’re like a family. i don’t know anyone personally but i have known some of you by blog name for more than a decade.

Not agreeing in one thing but this concept of Akbar, Aurengzeb, muslim, all one and same is troubling. because now i really don’t know what someone has in heart, someone i grew up with, someone i played with in childhood, now all sudden looks at me as i’m some sort of triator. This is systematic brain washing.

Yes, one can ignore but that’s not a solution, is it?

And you have someone like Rocky, who wants to judge 200 million citizen by action of like 200 people he saw. Than that precisely means the opposite is true too that 1 billion hindus are hateful people, which is absolutly not true cause i live and work and eat daily with hindu people.

i know hate is at all time high and will continue to be that way in the land of modi/shah/yogi because that is an easy way to rile up the people and win elections but i have a hope.

        • Yes, one can ignore but that’s not a solution, is it?

I’ve not asked anyone to ignore communal hatred in real life. Ignore it online. Don’t feed the trolls.

In real life, do whatever you can to fight for your rights. And what you know is your constitutional right. These BJP pimps don’t represent the whole Hindu community and they never will. They are a minority amongst the Hindu population. And it’s not just them. There are Owaisi and his ilk on the other side.

We need to fight these dangerous morons on both sides. Which is why being a centrist, sucks the life out of you. You end up fighting idiots on both sides. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Also, expect things to get worse. This is precisely how hatred works and why civil wars happen. The whole country is paying for not having a united opposition. It won’t last forever though — when jobs will be gone and the economy is completely decimated, they will be booted out. Whether India survives by that time, is up for debate though.

      • “This isn’t the same blog where intelligent discussions on cinema used to take place. It has become a place where some primitive creatures come to spew their poison, every time they crawl out of their hiding place.” ~ the hypocrisy of the champions of the right to dissent is exposed by the fact that the same creatures would slur, curse & abuse you in fancy ways the moment you dissent with them. And yeah, poisonous creatures like Anurag Kashyap, Swara Bhaskar & Vivek Agnihotri (before the ultra intellectual minds decide to brand me as a bhakt) are still as irrelevant as ever in their creative art as they were 6 years ago.

  33. All the great economies of the past became so because of one overriding factor in their populations: Homogeneity. The Brits were a white Protestant race beholden to their Queen. The Americans were a 90%+ white nation founded on Christian values. The Chinese are a 90%+ Han majority and Atheist nation. If the degree of homogeneity in these societies was not so high, it is doubtful they would’ve flourished.

The US has also managed to now become inclusive of non white populations, who in their own way have become Americanized. To become Americanized, one has to adhere to the same rules of law and Articles of the Constitution to which the Majorities adhere to as well. This ensures continuity of economic productivity amongst the immigrating masses. It does not mean that a minority has to lose their right to practice religion or their own culture. But, the civil laws HAVE to be followed. So no polygamy, no separate divorce procedures, no separate courts for family disputes, commercial cases, etc etc.

Now, someone please explain, how in the hell does one expect the Indian economy to become “Great” unless there is Homogeneity? When separate communities demand and receive separate judicial systems for their personal laws, how can those populations be homogenized? Modi has only tried to move India towards such homogenization.
It is very seductive to equate Secularism with romanticized MMD versions of AAA, or a Nehruvian vision etc. But do any of those ensure homogeneity? I wager NOT.

    • Well said NyKavi ..

    • Well in that case we expected the UCC, Population control bill and social/digital media regulations act in particular (much needed in this country where media literally creates riots). Instead we get an unconstitutional CAA which is only gonna add to woes of national security, polarization and overpopulation. Homogeneity can only be ensured via the UCC which the government has not spoken of as yet in 6 years of its reign. CAA/Nrc solves just the sole purpose of diverting attention from a crashing economy on which no one has any ideas. NDA sorely misses the services of the likes of Jaitely, Swaraj and Manohar Parrikar. In fact looking at the cabinet, I doubt hardly anyone knows what they’re supposed to do barring the ever efficient ex diplomat S Jaishankar.

Agree 100% but that does not mean india will become what you think. In USA, in current time (not talking about hundred year ago), Ayodhya, godhra, etc is not common, you won’t have thousands of citizen get killed in broad daylight. you don’t have amit shah/yogi going around saying kaat dalo salo ko…

Article 370, CAA, triple talaq is going to make economy great???

      • “Agree 100%” followed by “Article 370, CAA, triple talaq is going to make economy great???”
You just stated two contradictory viewpoints. Why is it that you accept a Western Democracy having Uniform laws for its entire population, but will not do the same for the Indian Democracy?

Ayodhya, Godhra, etc have nothing to do with uniformity. And these incidents took place decades ago, when the Indian economy was not even a fifth of what it is today.
Also, whatever you attribute to Yogi/Shah is also attributable to equally extremist leaders from the other side.

The simple fact is that a segment of the population was not used to having Uniform Laws foisted on them, and are protesting what they think is unfair. Has any leader explained to them that this is a Secular Democracy and not a Theology with separate rules? Who is to blame for the non-imposition of the uniformity over the past 70 years?

        • Even under this so called right wing Hindutva Govt,

UCC is still not in place.

          Only Hindu Temples are taxed.

Hindu deities are routinely mocked and abused. Criticize the Prophet and you end up in jail or dead. Or both. Just Google Kamlesh Tiwari.

RTE only applies to edu institutions opened by Hindus.

Supreme Court kicks out pleas to investigate the 1989 Pandits massacre.

Heck, the current Govt. itself has launched a bunch of schemes that discriminate against the majority based on their religion.

Homogeneity is a pipe dream. What “they” want is a return to the Nehruvian/Gandhian era where there are no questions asked after the Brahmin genocide of 1948, where the Congress retains it’s “secular” status after butchering 3000+ Sikhs in Delhi pushing a prosperous state into insurgency and where the Kashmiri Pandits can be massacred with the likes of Burkha semi-justifying it and the veto remaining intact.

Today bringing in CAA has resulted in (most of) Hindus being called Nazis and the capital being set on fire. Kal UCC aayega toh it will be a full blown Civil War especially with Soros’ supari.

            totally agree here .

        • Agree with “Also, whatever you attribute to Yogi/Shah is also attributable to equally extremist leaders from the other side.”

But no one on the otherside is in power like shah/yogi. You can’t hold a high position like shah/yogi and make remarks like that.

It’s okay for Al Sharpten to make rough comments but same cannot be expected from Obama.

I agree. No one under constitutional oath can or should say anything which is wrong

  34. Need of the hour movie?

  35. Really distressed to see the horrific images of casualties in the Hindus and Muslims communities. Little solace is it has not spread like wild fire the way it has done in the past taking the casualties to 100s and 100s.

Media anyway is taking sides as expected. Let’s pray this nonsense stops. We progress 2 steps ahead and then take 1 step back.
