EXCLUSIVE: We have just received word that Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson were tested positive for the coronavirus. Both were down in Australia for the pre-production of Baz Luhrmann’s untitled Elvis Presley film from Warner Bros. The two-time Oscar winner Hanks is set to play Presley’s longtime manager Colonel Tom Parker in the project.

    As many as 63 foreign players from countries like Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and the Caribbean are drafted to compete in the IPL.

    Sports Secretary Radhey Shyam Julaniya said he spoke with Chief Secretaries of Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh and asked them to ensure that mass gatherings are avoided at the matches. The ODI series between India and South Africa begins in Dharamshala Thursday, followed by a match in Lucknow on March 15.

    If implemented by states, this will be the first time in the country that an international match will be held behind closed doors. The India Open badminton championship, too, is likely to be hit following the government’s revised advisory, which may also put some of the country’s top players who are competing abroad into a 14-day quarantine.

    Earlier in the day, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and BAI had said the tournament will “go ahead as planned” and were exploring the possibility of conducting it without spectators. Even if the tournament goes ahead, the bigger concern for BAI, which is headed by BJP’s Himanta Biswa Sarma, would be the availability of all the shuttlers.

    More than half of the players will have to go into a minimum 14-day quarantine upon their arrival in Delhi, including top Indian stars like Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth as per the advisory issued today. Indian shuttlers had taken part in the Barcelona Open, which was held from February 18-23, and are currently in Birmingham, competing in the All England Championships.

      I hate adding to the chorus but this thing is real.

      Every year 500-600,000 people die of influenza or the common flu. COVID-19 has at least a 10x higher mortality rate.

      If the vaccine doesn’t arrive within a year, we can easily see 5-6 million people dying. The panic is there for a reason!

      The US response is pathetic, to say the least.

        The mortality rate in China is > 3%

        In Italy, it’s greater than 6.7%, partly because Italy boasts of a much higher elderly population.

        The common flu has a mortality rate of 0.1%, in comparison.

        There is a silver lining though — South Korea. The country has a fatality rate of 0.7%, much below the norm. They are also the ones who are testing for COVID19 the most, per capita that is. It seems this is the way out, for the lack of a proper vaccine.

        It’s real but the panic in supermarkets is really pathetic. People buying up the very things that can protect them from catching it from others. The elderly are not able to binch shop or online shopping so they suffer, catch it and pass it around. It would be more sensible to stop selling santizers in bulk and just ration to one per X amount of shop. Let’s see if people will spend then! The response from US has been atrocious and if the virus hits them hard a lot of people are in trouble with their healthcare system. China has done well. Japan too. India’s measures seem sound.

    It’s getting really bad in Iran, and Qom especially
    Last week, CNN reported that dozens of dead Iranians were laid in black body bags on the floor of a Qom morgue. It’s unclear how many of those people were were killed by the virus, if any. But it underscored how the city, a place considered holy in Shia Islam and a major center of Shia Islamic learning, is struggling to contend with a major crisis.

    Two medical workers in Qom told CNN that worries over the coronavirus have led to a stop in traditional Islamic burials, which include washing the body with soap and water before laying it to rest. Instead, those bodies are being treated with calcium oxide — lime — so they don’t infect the soil with the virus.

    Ali Ramezani, the director of the Behesht-e Masoumeh morgue in Qom, told state-run television at the time that there was now a “pile up” of bodies at the facility as they await testing.

    It’s unclear if the regime will get a handle on the crisis any time soon. In the meantime, Qom is aware of what’s at stake.

    ROME — The mayor of one town complained that doctors were forced to decide not to treat the very old, leaving them to die. In another town, patients with coronavirus-caused pneumonia were being sent home. Elsewhere, a nurse collapsed with her mask on, her photograph becoming a symbol of overwhelmed medical staff.

    In less than three weeks, the coronavirus has overloaded the heath care system all over northern Italy. It has turned the hard hit Lombardy region into a grim glimpse of what awaits countries if they cannot slow the spread of the virus and ‘‘flatten the curve’’ of new cases — allowing the sick to be treated without swamping the capacity of hospitals.

    If not, even hospitals in developed countries with the world’s best health care risk becoming triage wards, forcing ordinary doctors and nurses to make extraordinary decisions about who may live and who may die. Wealthy northern Italy is facing a version of that nightmare already.

    “This is a war,” said Massimo Puoti, the head of infectious medicine at Milan’s Niguarda hospital, one of the largest in Lombardy, the northern Italian region at the heart of the country’s coronavirus epidemic.

Doctors are also highly exposed to contagion.

      Matteo Stocco, the director of the San Paolo and San Carlo hospitals in Milan, said 13 members of his staff were home after testing positive for the virus. One of his primary emergency room doctors was also infected, he said, “after three weeks of continuous work, day and night on the field.”

      Dr. Puoti, of Niguarda hospital, said the doctors kept distance from one another in the cafeteria, wore masks during staff meetings and avoided gathering in small rooms. Still, he said, some had been infected, which created the risk of greater personnel shortages.

      “We’re trying to keep a humanly sustainable level of work,” he said. “Because this thing is going to last.”

      Carlo Palermo, president of the association representing Italy’s public hospital doctors, said the system had so far held up, despite years of budget cuts. It also helped, he said, that it was a public system. Had it been an insurance-based system, there would have been a “fragmented” response, he said.

      1. Keep distance (at least 6 feet).
      2. wash hands with warm water and soap for 30 seconds with good rubbing.
      3. Keep doing above two whenever you are out (probably less if you are inside house).
      4. Don’t touch face, eye and nose without washing hands.
      4a. sneeze in elbow than hand.
      4b. If you don’t have access to soap, like travelling, in car, use hand sanitizer.
      5. In case you have symptoms, you need to see doctor. and make sure stay away from everyone including family members.

      My daughter’s school:
      Wash hands with liquid soap and water and rub for at least 20 seconds;
      Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing;
      Refrain from touching your eyes, nose and mouth;
      Stay home when you are sick;

    Besides the hypertension factor, Du’s other insights into treating the disease are:

    Move Aggressively to Ventilate

    Du said that doctors should not hesitate to escalate measures for patients facing respiratory distress, as organ failure can set in quickly after. That means doctors should intervene aggressively with invasive ventilation measures — inserting a tube into a patient’s throat or cutting the throat open to create an airway — when low blood oxygen levels can’t be improved by less invasive measures.

    Almost half of the patients who require invasive mechanical ventilation end up dying, but most of those who recover are those who were put on invasive ventilation early, said Du.

    “Patients need to use invasive ventilation as early as possible, there’s no point of doing it late,” he said.

    Respiratory therapists — doctors that specialize in ventilation and oxygen treatment — are becoming all the more important in treating patients critically ill with Covid-19 as they are more knowledgeable and can fine-tune ventilators to suit patient conditions.
    No ‘Magic Bullets’ in Drugs

    There is growing anticipation over drugs being developed to treat the virus, with investors adding billions to the market value of pharmaceutical companies testing treatments now. But Du said drugs alone cannot save patients, especially those in severe condition.

    The experience of SARS, the epidemic 17 years ago that sickened almost 8,000 people, showed that most patients can be cured without a specific anti-viral drug, said Du. And the abundance of antibiotics has not prevented deaths by bacterial infections, he added.

    “When there’s a virus infection, we hope there’s a drug that can kill the virus and change the clinical outcome. But there’s no magic bullet.”

    Instead, teamwork among specialists and nurses in intensive care units can be more crucial in keeping patients alive, he said. “An ICU doctor should work like a conductor in an orchestra to provide life-sustaining treatment while taking into consideration different specialist views,” he said.

    “From what we known, infected pregnant women do not get into a serious situation with the coronavirus,” Du said. “With influenza, pregnancy is a high risk factor that can cause severe symptoms and lead to bad outcomes, but not this time.”

    Children infected with the coronavirus also seem to experience only mild symptoms, said Du. He has not seen any child infections deteriorate to a state which requires intensive care.

    Bengaluru: Sudha Murty, Chairperson of Infosys Foundation, has urged the Karnataka government to take steps to shut malls and theatres, saying the coronavirus multiplies in air-conditioned areas.
    In a letter to the government, she said preventive measures should be taken to control the spread of coronovirus before it gets worse.

    She suggested closure of all schools and colleges with immediate effect, malls, theatres and “all air-conditioned areas where the virus multiplies”, and allow only essential services like pharmacy, grocery and petrol bunks.

    “It is not scientifically proven that the virus dies in high temperature,” she said pointing to spread of the virus– despite heat — in peak summer in Australia and Singapore, which have “summer all 12 months”.

    “Non Democratic values led to spread of Covid-19.

    Covid-19 pandemic was left unattended for a long time by Chinese government. Agreed that they have been super efficient in controlling the spread in China, but the initial denial, pointing the fingers to USA, etc and then the subsequent last minute acceptance of the virus, cost the world a crucial 2 months to react.

    Being a closed society and tightly controlled ‘regimental’ environment made China to control the spread, but is also the reason why it wasn’t revealed initially.

    A more democratic, free media and whistle blower encouraging country would not have seen this going beyond an outbreak within a small geography in China.Now the world, its economy and humanity suffers. “

        The west has by in large delayed responses. People have panicked more than government giving proper leadership. The carnage in Italy is a reminder that this thing can bring a 50mn+ populated country to its knees. Having to choose between who lives and who doesn’t is genuinely happening there according to reports. In China they built a hospital in days. China took it lightly in December and the world panicked since mid Feb but swift moves like banning travel, rationing etc only happened in last 10 days.

        It is impossible to predict what is best strategy but I think you can have measures to stop panic. People buying santizers for £1 and selling on Ebay for £100 for example. Even the markets are clearly shorting to make long term profits. All this while 2-3 countries are begging for help.

          My point is a disaster is also more likely to begin in such society as there will be a tendency to hush hush by brute force.

          No doubt I agree. It’s polarized basically whereas a democratic system is not like a peak/trough, more steady.
          I worked in credit before and my leader always said – there will always be some kind of recession every 10-15 years, just don’t expect me to know what will trigger it. It could be economic, oil, war or whatever. Now it’s a worldwide health issue. These things are unpredictable.
          I agree with you that China has a lot to be accountable for.

          West have always been poor to responses despite its resources. They have a standardised system which doesn’t allow abnormal spikes to be handled. They take time but do it properly. The delay causes lot of damages too. The market driven mindset leads to hoarding and unusual cheating behaviour.

          Comparatively the dilapidated and unorganised Indian system shows extraordinary disaster management where it is disasters like tsunami or earthquakes or now the Covid-19 scare. Somehome people get together quickly and make things happen. Media, etc play a big role too. Government become more responsible. The lack of check and balance lead to quick reaction. Downside is that it leaves few scars open which is then sucked by the corrupt and illegal agencies.

          I will go out on a limb and bat for vegetarianism. I’m a vegetarian by choice, not because of religious practices.

          The whole epidemic has started because of eating wild animals. So there’s that, but also the fact that by becoming vegetarian one also reduces greenhouse gases as fewer animals will be reared for human consumption. It will save the planet too!

          It’s also a very ethical stance because animals are basically tortured for mass human consumption.

          Besides, there’s core scientific evidence that being vegetarian makes one live longer.

          So, being vegetarian makes one live longer, prevents epidemics arising from wild animal species and saves the planet that we inhabit. What’s there to not like?

          And being vegetarian doesn’t mean one’s strapped for eating choices either. It’s a WIN-WIN in every possible way.

          Saket I agree with you but I cannot give up chicken. The issue fundamentally is in the soil. It is full of chemicals so even those people going organic are under threat. The diet 50 years ago was better, too much food is processed – even soya, quorn.
          Plus healthy foods come with an unnecessary premium. They should be cheaper than McDonald’s.

          Lesson the cost – better health benefits and less pressure on health care.

          Vegetarianism isn’t by itself popular. Being Vegan though has become the new fad — and I don’t mind the extra premium either. You are paying for your own longevity, just like a gym membership. Can’t be penny-wise and pound-foolish, especially when it comes to one’s own health.

          It is a new fad but overall it’s benefits are huge. I disliked walking through Chinatown and Hong Kong – dead animal carcasses on every shop window. It’s one thing to eat it but to flaunt it put me right off.
          I like the vegan diet. Vegan beetroot burgers are so tasty!

          Crisps, samosas, Chevro, dhokra, chips, I find it hard with these foods to say no. Now my wife’s family are proper food junkies, they would hyperventilate without a meal. Plus they are all huge and obese, I mean just yokozuna types. I’m glad I can go without as with them around I’ll have 20 health issues.

          Yes, Indian families are like that. I used to enjoy street food in India so much (I still do) — Delhi is a heaven for foodies. And all of it vegetarian as well.

          I went to Leicester once and it had the most amazing Gujju food. Dhoklas with green chilies are my favourite.

          In Wembley, ealing road try Maru house – it’s been around for years. Or as my dad would say go to his house and eat my mums Maru bhajjia, they are awesome. As many indian families did they cooked and sold in 80s. My mum did too and she’s a great cook. It was easier when you were 8 or 9 and could have 20 samosas but now the days of binge eating are over.

          Try Frankie and Benny’s vegan beet. It’s my favourite dish there, even over chicken. I only eat chicken if it’s north India curry style. Otherwise on a average 2 meals out of 21 a week would have chicken or fish. Don’t eat pig or beef. Lamb only occasionally. I agree with Naveen on China with respect to meats. It’s not conventional meat diet it’s the extravagant exotic stuff like snakes, cats and dogs etc. Poultry, fish, pigs etc have been eaten for centuries so by humans own evolution I doubt it’s killing us beyond wider concerns on environmental matters.

          The situation here is not due to eating non veg responsibly. Chicken and fish are quite good for health and vegans have all the health problems too. There are surely advantages to be a vegetarian but Covid-19 is not the time to talk about it as it dilutes the main reason.

          The food habit of chinese-

          Here the culture of chinese upper middle class to eat exotic wild animals is to be blamed. According to chinese, there are several aphrodisiacal and drug like sexual benefits when you eat wild animals. There is a big demand for these animals esp among the rich chinese population. In Late 70s, China nationalised all the wild animals and allowed its people to rear and sell wild animals. All kind of animals are reared, sold and eater in China. This is what we call the last mile before humans turn into cannibals.

          If you are vegetarian , you most likely will have B12 and/or Iron deficiency.

          I prefer to be vegetarian (I can eat chicken if there are no choices)..couple of years ago doctor diagnosed me with B12 deficiency. Googled found that it is common in vegetarians. Iron from meat is easily absorbed compared to other sources.

    Coronavirus: Malls, Cinemas Closed In Mumbai, 4 Other Maharashtra Cities

    Uddhav Thackeray said that whenever possible, companies should allow employees to work from home to avoid the spread of the coronavirus.
    Movie theatres, malls, gyms and swimming pools will be shut in Mumbai and four other cities in Maharashtra from 12am tonight till further orders as a measure to counter the novel coronavirus, the state government announced today. The four other cities where the safety measure will be implemented are Pune, Navi Mumbai, Nagpur and Pimpri Chinchwad, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced in the state assembly.
    The Maharashtra government’s move came as the number of coronavirus cases in country rose to 81 with 14 cases from Maharashtra. The state follows Delhi and Kerala where schools and movie theatres have been shut. Schools in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad will also remain shut till further orders. Class 10 state board exams will however be conducted as per schedule.

    Uddhav Thackeray also said that whenever possible, companies should allow employees to work from home to avoid the spread of the virus.

    The state government had earlier banned ticket sales for the 2020 Indian Premier League opener between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. The match was to be held on March 29.

          To bring another layer, lets look at all the remix of old songs and how it’s displayed. I have opinion that the remix itself is bad where they do lousy job, the picturisation is bad. The fact they have to remix tells me that the new generation is bankrupt of ideas, but now even if i go back 25 to 30 years, nadeem-shravan, anu malik, anand-milad, jatin-lalit did same thing. they copied songs from pakistan and other part of the world and presented it as their own, but at least there was some effort into it to make it look and sound good.

          But you can see they have added something more to make it their own but I agree most of remixes nowadays are blatant copy with no value addition.

          It is also a fact that new generation is more consumeristic/materialistic..You want to get results quickly. It is not bad thought but when you want to do things quickly, you will make mistakes and take short cuts; Sometimes you are on right side and sometimes on wrong side.

      I read the entire article. Actually they praised India and are trying to find out the reasons.

      According to them, India has younger people who outnumber older people. Younger people have more resistance.

      India took preventive measures from the beginning starting from Kerala.

      India produces the largest amount of generic drugs and anti biotics and they are available over the counter generally and which can be used for treating secondary symptoms of coronavirus or covid 19.

      And we live in a warmewr climate.

      Apart, my own observations.
      Our food habits also help. Even non vegetarians dont consume non veg on a daily basis due to high cost or for some religious reasons.

      And our immunity is much better because we are able to survive inspite of unhealthy surroundings. While persons who live in very clean surroundings cant survive a lesser clean atmosphere and get sick easily.

        Yes, my daughters and nieces loves sanders, and i have to explain to my daughters that there is no such thing as free. Someone will have to pay for it and as expensive as colleges and healthcare is, how do you make that free???

        And where there is free things like some country has free health care, go see the level of care and compare it to what you get here. Any little thing, you call a specialist and you get an appointment within couple weeks provided you have a good insurance. In those free healthcare country, you’re waiting in the line.

        My uncle has Medicaid, he has hard time first finding a doctor and then getting an appointment from that doctor.
        My parents have Madicare with Supplemental Plan F and they get calls from doctors office on when are they coming in for a checkup.

    “We need to make sure the sea of new treatments will get the right drug to the right patients at the right dosage at the right time,” Dr. Hahn said, citing the importance of establishing the safety and efficacy of possible treatments. “As an example we may have the right drug but may not be near appropriate dosage form right now and that may do more harm than good.”

    There is no proven drug treatment for the new coronavirus, and doctors around the world have been desperately testing an array of medicines in the hopes of finding something that will help patients, especially those who are severely ill.

    During the briefing, the president and Dr. Hahn said that the F.D.A. had approved the use in coronavirus patients of the prescription drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, which have been used for malaria. There have not been clinical trials to determine whether those drugs actually work for the disease, and Dr. Hahn did not explain why the F.D.A. is supporting their use.

    Doctors in China and France have said there were indications they might help, and many hospitals in the United States had already begun using them.

    Dr. Hahn also said the F.D.A. was considering the use of “convalescent plasma,” meaning blood from people who have recovered from the disease, which contains antibodies against the coronavirus that might be able to help other patients fight the virus.

    Mr. Trump and Dr. Hahn also said they planned to allow patients to gain access to an experimental drug, remdesivir, through a policy known as “compassionate use.” Compassionate use is typically used to grant access to not-yet-approved experimental drugs to give potentially lifesaving treatments to patients who might otherwise die.

    Hyderabad: The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam Board has decided to close the famous Lord Venkateswara Swamy or Balaji temple to devotees as a precautionary measure to control the spread of coronavirus.
    The decision was taken after an emergency meeting was called today. TTD Board chairperson YV Subba Reddy told NDTV that a devotee from Maharashtra had taken ill with fever, cough and cold inside the temple and had to be shifted to hospital.

    “Though for the last few days we have been asking devotees to avoid coming to the temple, the situation now is such that we have to close the temple. The daily puja rituals will be carried out by the archakas,” Mr Reddy said.

    The patient who is now in Sri Venkateswara Ruia Hospital had come along with a group of about 100 pilgrims who had visited several other temples across the country. His sample has been sent for testing positivity to coronavirus.

    The worry is that before being detected at Tirumala temple, the man may have been exposed to many pilgrims here and elsewhere. All of them may need to be identified and monitored.

    Nature may be the next lesson intended for us. Homo Sapiens is the only organism that has overpowered all other animals, taken control of the whole planet, and even set foot on the moon. Now it stands humbled by a microorganism. We would do well to keep in mind the fact that at the end of the day we are merely biological organisms, dependent on other organisms for survival. Humankind’s craving to control nature and exploit all its resources for profit can be wiped out in a stroke by an organism we cannot even see with the naked eye.

    Let us remind ourselves that our ancestors saw nature as mother, and asked us to respect it. At some point in history, we forgot ancient wisdom. When pandemics and abnormal weather phenomena are becoming the norm, it is time to pause and wonder where we lost the way, and how we can still make a comeback.

      Things will have to slowly start getting back to functional ways in 2-3 weeks. A country like India cannot survive a lock down for >1 month considering the economic catastrophe it might incur. That being said, I guess a relaxation would need to be done in a phases with essential services like Railways, Airways, Govt & Private offices etc returning back to work first followed by other non essential services like malls, restaurants, cinemas etc. In all, I’m looking at 2-3 months to return to complete normalcy. Here’s something that’s interesting if you’re based in India :

          You need following for WFH:
          1. In office, You work mostly on desktop.
          2. Your company has VPN infrastructure.
          3. Employee has good internet connection at home.
          4. You need collaborating software like Webex, Zoom.

          If you are missing any you will have problem.

          In my office, everyone is working from home. If you have to go to office, you need VP’s permission and no overlapping.

          Firstly, India’s private sector especially the IT/BT is heavily based on BPO work structure. Which pretty much rules out wfh on most occasions (even now a lot of the agents are having a hard time obtaining static ip’s to make outbound calls). Second, even at the operations/managerial level, a wfh in a country like India rife with power and network issues is a near impossible task. As for the government offices and PSU’s, a wfh is a near impossibility anyways.

    Top politicians go into self-quarantine after singer Kanika Kapoor tests positive for coronavirus

    Here’s what sent many politician into a tizzy:

    On March 15, from 7 pm to 1 am, two parties were organised — one at former BSP MP Akbar Ahmed Dumpy’s Gokhle Marg residence and at another party in Cantonment, said a person in the know of things.

    Kanika attended Dumpy’s party, which had lot of attendees who also attended the second party at BJP MP’s place. UP health minister Jai Pratap Singh, Vasundhara Raje, her son Dushyant Singh were all present at Dumpy’s party. Dushyant attended the Parliament for at least two days after the party.

    After the news of her testing positive, Vasundhara Raje tweeted that she and Dushyant have gone into self-quarantine.

    After Vasundhara’s tweet, two MPs — Derek O’Brien, who had sat next to Dushyant in Parliament on March 18 and Apna Dal MP Anupriya Patel, who was at another event with Dushyant, tweeted that they had placed themselves into self-quarantine.

    Dushyant also attended the lunch hosted at the Rashtrapati Bhawan for MPs from UP and Rajasthan. President Ramnath Kovind and the defence minister were at the lunch.

    A UP government spokesperson confirmed that the health minister Jai Pratap Singh has gone into self-quarantine. The spokesperson added that though the minister was feeling absolutely normal, his samples have been collected for tests.

    Jai Pratap Singh’s presence at the party has rung the alarm bells in the Yogi Adityanath government as Singh had attended the UP cabinet meeting with Yogi Adityanath, on March 17.

    The next day Singh had a lot of intermingling with Yogi Adityanath along with his two deputies Dinesh Sharma and Keshav Prasad Maurya.

    Congress leader Jitin Prasada, who was also present at one of the parties, has also gone into self-isolation.

    How is health department tracking people?

    First, the ones who were in direct contact with the singer will be screened and put under home quarantine, even if they do not have symptoms. Samples of those with symptoms will be tested for corona virus.

    If any one of the secondary contacts shows symptoms of coronavirus they will also be screened and their samples tested. The department will keep on expanding the list unless it is ensured that no one is left carrying the virus and this will take up to 28 days of tracking.

      If anyone’s willing to follow astrology, since this is the only science which is giving us specific answers for now. March 30-April 14, a slow return to partial normalcy with Jupiter (the knowledgeable guru) leaving its association with Ketu (incidentally the 2 were aligned during 9/11 2001 too) and enters the house of Capricorn where it joins Saturn (associated with ancient medicine and ayurveda). April 14th onwards the Sun enters the house of Aries and since the Surya plays a major role in Indian mythology and astrology, its shine upon us might help us get our lives back to normal although the entire period would last till somewhere around Mid May. There’d be another slight hiccup between July 1st and Sep end where Jupiter might retrograde but the repercussions would not be anywhere near what we’re witnessing now. These are estimations of course.

    Health officials in Nigeria have issued a warning over chloroquine after they said three people in the country overdosed on the drug, in the wake of President Trump’s comments about using it to treat coronavirus.

    A Lagos state official told CNN that three people were hospitalized in the city after taking the drug. Officials later issued a statement cautioning against using chloroquine for Covid-19 treatment.

    The drug chloroquine is used to treat malaria, and some early research suggests it may be useful in treating COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus.

    No drugs are approved to prevent or treat the coronavirus.

    When the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) released a statement on March 23 recommending use of the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine as a preventive medicine for those who face a high risk of coronavirus infection, C. Banerjee, a 69-year-old resident of Delhi’s Kalkaji, says the news gave him the shivers. In the 1980s, as cases of malaria began to increase in India, chloroquine (which is closely related to hydroxychloroquine) was widely prescribed. “It is like swallowing death,” recounts Banerjee. Reported side effects of chloroquine include nausea, headache, mood swings, skin irritation, swelling, cramps, pale skin, muscle weakness, bleeding from nose and hearing problems. An overdose can result in death. Hydroxychloroquine too can lead to headaches, nausea, lowering of blood glucose, drowsiness, reduced appetite, depression, irreversible blindness, cramps and heart failure (if overdosed). “It leaves a horrible bitter taste in the mouth. I remember taking it and feeling faint, nauseous and terribly unwell. I hope the drug is different now,” adds Banerjee.

    This is driving me nuts. I’m in Connecticut, USA with population of about 3.5 million and we have more cases and death then India with population of over 1.3 billion.

    Government took the right step of closing down for 3 weeks, because there are lot more people who actually are walking around with corona than what’s being reported, which is around 600 cases.

    Unless india got super lucky where it had no travellers from Wuhan or around the world who had the virus.

      Actually India’s first case was from Student from Wuhan.

      I think lockdown is tactical; NY cases are piling but comparatively Cali is less where you have more contacts with Chinese population. In Bay Area lockdown was declared on 16th; And there were many companies where people were doing WFH much earlier. I think NY delayed it and results are there.

      In India I think less count reasons:
      1. Less number of test done. But people with symptoms will go and get checked.
      2. India put more travel curbs early on.
      3. I think Indian immunity is better. (this is just a guess).

    The chief scientific consultant on the 2011 film about a fictional pandemic, “Contagion,” has tested positive for COVID-19.

    Dr. Ian Lipkin, the director of Columbia University’s Center for Infection and Immunity, talked to Fox Business on Tuesday about what researchers have gleaned from recovered coronavirus patients in an effort to treat those now suffering from the disease. In the interview, Lipkin revealed he had been diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

    “I would just like to say on this show tonight that this has become very personal for me, too, because I have COVID as of yesterday. And this is miserable. [If] it can hit me, it can hit anybody,” he said.

    The professor has more than 30 years of experience in diagnostics, microbial discovery and outbreak response. According to his biography on Columbia’s website, he helped identify “West Nile virus as the cause of the encephalitis epidemic in New York in 1999” and has “discovered or characterized more than 500 infectious agents including Borna disease virus, West Nile virus, LuJo virus and human rhinovirus C.”

    Lipkin coached the actors in “Contagion” on “the practices and process of scientific research.”

Rishi Kapoor, who spent nearly a year in New York for his cancer treatment, remembered Floyd Cardoz with these words: “RIP. Floyd Cardoz. Soon after, a picture of them together at an event went viral as trolls blamed the singer for passing on the virus to the prince. However, this isn’t true as the picture, according to a Deccan Chronicle report, is from the royal event held in 2015.

    One of the viral pictures of Kanika, in an orange dress, chatting with Prince Charles, is from an event – the Elephant Family charity ‘Travels to my Elephants’ — hosted by Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, in 2015. However, trolls went on to criticise Kanika. While it takes 14 days for the symptoms to show, it’s impossible the singer must have infected him several years ago, much before the coronavirus came into existence.

    Salman Khan To Financially Support 25,000 Daily Wage Workers From The Film Industry Amid Lockdown

    Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has pledged to financially support 25,000 daily wage workers from the film industry in the wake of the national lockdown, according to Federation of Western Indian Cine Employees (FWICE), reported news agency PTI. The country is witnessing a 21-day lockdown, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to contain the spread of the virus. The daily wage workers across different avenues are badly hit by the lockdown. According to FWICE president B N Tiwari, Salman via his Being Human Foundation reached out to their organisation to help the workers. “Salman’s Being Human Foundation has come forward to help daily wage workers. They called us three days ago. We have about 5 lakh workers out of which 25,000 are in dire need of financial help. Being Human Foundation said they will take care of these workers on their own. They have asked for account details of these 25,000 workers as they want to ensure that money reaches them directly,” Mr Tiwari told PTI.
    “The remaining 4,75,000 workers can survive for about a month. We already have huge ration packets for all the workers but unfortunately due to lockdown they are not able to come here to collect it. We are thinking of ways how to reach out to them,” he added.

      Neeraj pandey never went behind money. He could have done sequels after a wednesday or special 26. After baby, he was most anticipated director and crack was eagerly awaited. But, no sure what happened, he could have got any big actor with big budget at that point of time.
      He instead went for aiyarray, which is again Very interesting movie with great plot and i like it a lot but bad lead in form of sidhharth malhotra and poor editing and forced songs for commercial purpose spoiled it. Still, one of the better movies in recent times.
      I heard, special ops series is also very good.
      I don’t know what he is doing with His career. He can surely make big moolah anytime but unlike any other director his passion seems to be storytelling and thrillers.

    The pandemic would send the entire movie calendar into haywire. I don’t think any of the biggies Radhe, Laxmi Bomb, Prithviraj, LSC etc would release in 2020 now. Shooting’s gonna be stalled for months together and almost every film would be delayed by at least 8-10 months if not more. I don’t see theaters in India returning to capacity till at least July/August. Even thereafter, they might have to remove half the seats in every audi to confine to distancing norms.

      Interesting observations by Shivaay and Naveen. Seats being separated will really hit the collections. Down south many people are addicted to watching potboilers regularly and filmstars will be unemployed and underemployed for a while. The big money will elude them.
      Pollution will be less with less vehicles and controlled consumption. One plus point.
      The first casualty will be the poorest. And then slowly the others have to pay the price though they are quite smug as of now. Entire human kind which is running after materialism with no holds barred has to stop and change itself for the new world that will emerge once the covid 19 is controlled with effective medicines. We have to be on the lookout for signs like Wuhan and take precautions well in advance.

    The coronavirus pandemic is looking to be the biggest shutdown ever for Hindi cinema with the worst seen before being in 2009 when there was no major release for around 2 months though small films did release on limited screens. This is going to be a longer shutdown if we go by China where cinemas have some chance of opening in a few weeks time which would mean a 3 month shutdown. It is being reported that the biggest theatre in Wuhan where the pandemic started was disinfected yesterday getting ready to open up.

    So with the huge problems in US and Europe the 3 minimum period looks a minimum for this shutdown and its not as if everything goes back to normal as soon as cinemas open up. There is fear in the industry that this will change cinema forever for the worse but thats an unlikely scenario. The only horrible scenario is that a vaccine for this pandemic proves hard to find as that will for sure change cinema forever but considering where medical science is around the world today you would expect someone somewhere to find one.

    Obviously the industry in this scenario takes the negative side as they see films with lower budgets and stars cutting fees to help out when that is not probably the need of the hour as the audience that was there has not run away but there is a huge global pandemic which does not allow socializing and eventually things will come back to how there were but there is no time frame. Its always weird the industry also expected stars to cut prices in bad times but that has never really happened. It is all supply and demand and these prices are not forced. Also its a totally star driven industry and until you find the technique or content to drive the industry then star prices will only go one way and that is up.

    The last shutdown in 2009 did see higher occupancy at multiplexes and that was even though 2009 did not have huge event films. But that was not a health scare also so the likely scenario is that the higher occupancy will come this time as well due to pent up demand but it will not be straight away and may take some time but eventually they will be higher as the health risks diminish.

    There have been four major shutdowns in the last fifty years or so and after each one there has been an uptick in average box office occupancy for a period. In March 1968 there was a shutdown of releases and shoots for 19 days due to high rental charges in North and CPCI Rajasthan. The mega BLOCKBUSTER Ram Aur Shyam was one week away from a silver jubilee in many theatres when this shutdown came. Post the shutdown there was a line of big HITS and successful films.

    In October 1986 there was a halt of releases in Mumbai due to huge taxes which were around 170% in Maharashtra. Films did continue to release in other circuits and Dosti Dushmani and Insaaf Ki Awaaz proved to be HITS in the strike and Nagina was a blockbuster released a week after the strike was halted. The tax was so bad that there were some films having a 10 lakh total GROSS collections and the share to the distributor was just one lakh. This bandh lasted 31 days.

    The tax problem in Maharashtra returned in January 1997 and there was a shutdown for a month with no major releases. The state government had bought down entertainment tax to 50% in September 1984 and it was going back to 100% from January 1997 which led to cinemas shutting in Maharashtra and no big releases. The casualty was Ajay which only had a one week run in Maharashtra. When the cinemas opened up in February there was a flood of grossers like Judwaa, Hero No.1, judaai, Ziddi and Koyla.

    Then in 2009 there was a longest strike due to a revenue sharing issue between multiplexes and distributors/ producers. The cinemas did remain open so there was no causalities but there was not a major release for almost 3 months. All the chains saw better average occupancy for six months after the strike then what they saw for six months prior to the strike.

    So there is hope cinema will come back stronger when the things are back to normal though it will take time as all the other closures were industry problems and here its a huge global issue. A good result will be if things get going sometime in the third quarter but due to westerns countries having the worst of the pandemic the fourth quarter may be when the bigger films come and there could be a line of them.

    All said and done I’m sure most of us here would agree that lockdowns and social distancing measures are only a temporary solution to a long term problem that are neither viable and nor possible to implement for long durations of time. Ultimately there are 3 factors that matter the most :

    1) A possibility of a drug (or a series of drugs) within the next 2-3 months that allow fast track curing and discharging of patients (within 10 days of less) which would lessen the burden on healthcare systems exponentially.

    2) Extensive testing mechanisms (implying almost all private hospital chains in India need to have the infrastructure to test for Covid), isolation and extensive surveillance that can enable large scale contact tracing and isolation to allow the society and economy to function normally while the suspects are isolated.

    3) General basic social distancing habits that are here to stay. Not more than 200 people inside a shopping mall on a weekend, not more than 5-10 people in a gym at once, cinemas removing half their seats and maintaining a 1 meter distance between each seat, half the workforce in private companies working from home regularly, OLA/Uber sharing services being banned, flights doing away with the middle row and having just the window and aisle seat etc. These mechanisms might need to be in place for the entire of 2020 in all probability.

    New Delhi: Amid rising pressure to allow exports of an anti-malarial drug being tested on patients infected with coronavirus, the government is likely to take a decision tomorrow and clear the move after calculating sufficient stocks for the country, sources have told NDTV.
    Last month, India had banned the export of hydroxychloroquine and formulations of the malaria drug while experts test its efficacy in helping treat COVID-19 patients.

    There are currently no approved treatments, or preventive vaccines for COVID-19, the highly contagious, sometimes deadly respiratory illness caused by coronavirus.

    Hydroxychloroquine, a malaria drug, is among the medications undergoing testing as a potential treatment for patients with the disease. India is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of the medicine.

    American President Donald Trump on Saturday said that he has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow exports of hydroxychloroquine amid a shortage in the US.

    On Sunday, the government held an inter-ministerial meeting and again met on Monday to assess the domestic requirement for the anti-malarial drug.

    “We have decided to go ahead with export of the drug after the Health Ministry gives its total domestic requirement plus 25 per cent extra to ensure buffer stocks are available,” a senior government official told NDTV.

    The government is trying its best to control the spread of COVID-19 and has converted most government hospitals, hotels, resorts, abandoned buildings into isolation wards where suspected patients have been kept under observation. But those ‘under observation’ here, feel it was better if they had died instead of being brought there, as conditions are deplorable, they say.

    Some also alleged that the doctors don’t pay attention to them. mid-day spoke to a few people who have been kept in isolation wards.

    “We did not get water with breakfast and got a water bottle of half litre each with lunch and dinner. I raised this issue with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) employee here and asked him, ‘Have we been kept in the isolation wards to remain thirsty? It would have been better if we were left to die’. The BMC official assured me we will get enough water to drink,” said a 37-year-old Kurla resident, who has been kept under isolation in a hotel in Sakinaka.

    ‘No food for 24 hrs’
    A 28-year-old businessman from Shireenbai Chawl in Mumbai Central and his nine relatives have tested positive and have been kept in different hospitals in Mumbai. Another relative of his has alleged that since being admitted 24 hours back, he has not been given food. “The businessman has been admitted to the civic hospital in Powai. It has been more than 24 hours since he was admitted, but neither has a doctor visited him nor has he been given food. He will die of starvation,” the relative said. He also claimed that neither of those admitted have been attended to by doctors. Their relatives have expressed their concerns on Twitter and tagged the chief minister, health minister and others but neither of them took cognisance of the tweet. Their relatives and other COVID-19 suspected patients have alleged that the condition of the isolation wards is extremely unhygienic. The beds and the floors are dirty and they were forced to use the common toilets and bathroom.

    No milk or food for kids
    Another person said that 10 of his relatives were admitted in Shatabdi Hospital’s isolation ward in Kandivli after the death of a 68-year-old relative who tested positive for COVID-19. Since April 1, he said seven members tested negative and were discharged, but three family members including two children – the younger child is 2-years-old – are still in the isolation ward. He claimed the hospital authorities told him to get milk and food for the children as they don’t have the facility for them.

    Another 40-year-old was isolated with his nine family members after the death of his father who tested COVID-19 positive on March 31, at Shatabdi hospital’s isolation centre. He and six family members tested negative but three other family members are still in the isolation ward.

    Speaking to mid-day, he said the condition of the isolation ward is terrible. “Suspected COVID-19 patients and isolated patients are kept in the same ward. In my four days of isolation neither was the ward was sanitised nor was the floor was cleaned. The food was sub-standard. In such conditions, a healthy person could also become ill.”

    The conditions are said to be similar at the ESIS Kamgar hospital isolation centre, where 63 nurses from Shatabdi hospital were isolated after the death of a COVID-19 positive patient. The nurses have put up videos and photos of the isolation ward on social media.

    Fortunately, for the 108 people of Worli koliwada, who have been kept in the isolation ward of MA Podar hospital, mid-day’s report on the quality of food given to them got them a visit by the mayor of Mumbai. After the visit, they have been getting decent food from Monday.

    ‘This is breakfast, and lunch’
    Powai’s MCMCBR (MCGM Centre for Municipal Capacity Building and Research) building has been turned into a quarantine centre with 50 people on one floor. People here said they don’t get food on time. Breakfast is available at 11 am and lunch at 3 pm.

    A 47-year-old man said, “Today we were given rajma-rice at 1 pm and told it is breakfast and lunch.”

    “My father was found to be COVID-19 positive, after which I was kept in the isolation ward here. I have been here for 10 days but the doctor has not told me anything so far,” he added.

    Another 36-year-old man said, “I was tested on March 30 and found to be positive but have not been tested after that. The doctors are not telling anything.”

    Despite repeated messages to him regarding the issue, Municipal Commissioner Praveen Pardeshi was not available for comment.

    In a late night action on Monday, the police shifted three senior state government officials including the principal secretary and the additional director of the health department to hospitals following an intervention by the CM, government officials said. These officers were insisting on being treated at home.

    The officials argued that since they didn’t have any symptoms of Covid-19 despite having tested positive, as per World Health Organisation (WHO)’s advisory they should be treated in their homes only while under quarantine.

    In a written statement on Tuesday night Commissioner, health services Faiz Ahmad Kidwai said, “An inquiry is being conducted to find out reasons behind a large number of Health directorate officials and employees having been infected with Covid-19. The district administration has been instructed to look into the contact history of affected persons and inquire into the order in which they have been affected. Tracing is necessary to know who met whom and from where it all started. After the inquiry responsibility will be fixed on persons concerned and necessary action will be taken.”

    Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachchan has started distributing 2000 packets of food daily to provide lunch and dinner to the needy across Mumbai amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This gesture in addition to providing monthly ration to one lakh households of daily wage workers associated with the All India Film Employees Confederation.

    The actor took to his blog to talk of his social service. “Meanwhile on the personal front .. 2000 packets of food are being given each day for lunch and dinner at various locations over the city .. and the larger bags of a monthly provision about 3000 bags, which would take care of at 12,000 mouths is in process,” he wrote.

    He even revealed the locations where the needy were being fed.

    “Most of the feeding is taking place at the Haji Ali dargah, the Mahim dargah, the Babulnath Temple, the slum in Bandra and a few other slums in the interior North of the city .. it is so difficult to cover as many as we may want to .. but…”

    The actor then highlighted the practical problems faced in transportation of supplies because of the nationwide lockdown.

    “The process has its problems .. the lockdown has now made it illegal to step out of the house and living areas .. so even though I have been able to get the bags ready its transportation causes problems,” he wrote.

    “One cargo vehicle can carry 50-60 bags of the essential package .. so 3000 packages would involve so many more vehicles .. the vehicles is not the problem , its their movement that is restricted.”

    The problem is not just in transportation but also during distribution of food, because slum-dwellers who have been starving over the past few days tend to get unruly and impatient during the distribution of food. This often creates a stampede-like situation.

    “The authorities are saying that when the package arrives , people , specially those in the slums for whom the material is specially packed , have not eaten for 3-4 days and they rush for the vehicle to pick up their package, which almost causes a stampede and the Police cannot allow that to happen , with the conditions of ‘social distancing’,”Big B wrote.

    The actor also revealed that he gives instructions to carry out the process the right way.

    “Even where the daily food is being distributed I have insisted that proper lines are formed keeping distances from one another .. the volunteers, thank the Lord are working tirelessly in extreme conditions to make sure of its proper functioning .. it is a tough task .. but what can be done .. the cues are large and with each passing day are getting bigger and bigger,” he said in his post.

    Lauding the people associated with the process, he expressed: “We try to provide .. but getting the provision to reach the needy is an exercise! Something will work out I hope and pray .. I get a video and pictures of all the procedures happening each hour so I can give instructions .. which is a great help .. and of course the team that works day and night is incredibly diligent.”

    Meanwhile, Big B also took to Twitter to express words of gratitude for supply warriors who are risking their lives to serve the nation in this hour of crisis.

Even shopping malls will have a cap on the number of people entering them (if at all they’re allowed to open this year). If not, expect all biggies including Sooryavanshi to release straight in 2021. Big ask in a country like India but that’s how its gonna be at least till Diwali.

    Washington: More than 40 Indian-Americans and citizens of India have reportedly lost their lives due to the deadly coronavirus and the number of those having tested positive for the dreaded disease is likely over 1,500, according to community leaders in the US, now the global COVID-19 hotspot.
    The US has become the world’s first country to have registered more than 2,000 COVID-19 deaths in a single day with 2,108 fatalities reported in the past 24 hours, while the number of infections in America has crossed 500,000, according to latest Johns Hopkins University data.

    New York, which has emerged as the epicenter of the COVID-19 in the US, along with adjoining New Jersey, account for majority of the death cases reported so far. Notably, New York and New Jersey have one of the highest concentrations of Indian-Americans in the country.

    Among those who have died in the fight against the coronavirus, at least 17 are from Kerala, 10 from Gujarat, four from Punjab, two from Andhra Pradesh and one from Orissa. Majority of them are more than 60 years of age, except for one who was of 21 years of age.

    According to a list of COVID-19 deaths compiled by PTI from various community leaders, more than a dozen Indian-Americans have died in the State of New Jersey, mostly around the Little India areas of Jersey City and Oak Tree Road.

    Similarly, at least 15 Indian-Americans have reportedly died in New York.

    Reports of the deaths of four Indian-Americans have also come from Pennsylvania and Florida. There has been confirmed deaths of at least one Indian-American in both Texas and California.

    Reports indicated that at least 12 Indian nationals have died in the US due to the coronavirus, with a majority of them being from New York-New Jersey area.

    “We have not seen a situation like this in the past,” said Bhavesh Dave, who runs a commercial real estate business on the Oak Tree Road area of New Jersey often called as Little India.

    Among those who lost their lives were Hanmantha Rao Marepally, CEO of Sunnova Analytical Inc. He passed away in Edison, New Jersey. He is survived by wife and two daughters.

    Chandrakant Amin, a popular face at Indian Square in New Jersey City, and known for distributing flyers for businesses has also died of the novel coronavirus. He was 75.

    More than 50 friends and family members of Mahendra Patel, 60, joined his last rites through an online video platform this week, after city officials in New Jersey told them that not more than nine of them could attend the funeral in person. At least one Indian-American died inside his home in New Jersey.

    Community leaders said they estimate more than 400 Indian-Americans have tested positive in New Jersey and more than a 1,000 in New York. In New York City several Indian-American taxi drivers have tested positive.

    There are reports of several community leaders being tested positive for coronavirus, but most of them requested anonymity.

    Meanwhile, community leaders have started online and social media campaigns to find plasma donors so as to help in the treatment of those in serious condition. At least two of them were successfully able to find a plasma donor on Friday.

    One Neila Pandya in Jersey City shared a video on social media on Friday, urging community members not to take the virus pandemic lightly.

    Speaking in Gujarati, she said that all five of her family members are seriously ill, of which local hospital has admitted only two of them, as there were not enough beds.

    Rasik Patel, 60, from Jersey City who was taken off the ventilator a few days ago is reportedly in a serious condition.

    While there is sense of panic among Indian Americans, some of the community leaders have come out with a helping hand. For instance, Ajit, Sachin and Sanjay Modi from Rajbhog Sweets have been providing free vegetarian food at Jersey City Medical Center.

    Dave from Oak Tree Road in New Jersey has started a fund raiser campaign to donate 1,000 face masks to health care professionals and first responders.

    There are reports of several local restaurants in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, and Pennsylvania distributing foods to their nearest hospitals.

    World Hindu Council of America volunteers have been supplying free meals to Lowell General Hospital- ER workers in Boston and to first responders and doctors in Indianapolis. It also distributed 85,000 gloves to the local police, fire, and emergency medical technicians in New Jersey.

    Lockdown continues.

    Two feelings. Happy and unhappy.Relieved but worried.

    Will we be staring at another lockdown after April 30?

    My suggestions

    Please allow limited autos and cabs to ferry passengers going to and coming back from hospitals, grocery shops.

    .Allow electrical shops and plumber shops with limited staff to function so that household leakages, shortcircuits, repair work can take place. And also they can repair internet services and dish tv.

    Help disabled and senior citizens allowing doorstep delivery.

    Doctors recommend walking to stay healthy. And walking is prohibited. Unless you own big private bungalows with walking space. Physiotherapists are unable to tend to bedridden patients.

    Stray dogs are hungry and indoor licensed dogs are restless without their daily walk routines.

    People are feeling claustrophobhic. Mental illnesses sure to increase.

    What is the guarantee that lockdown will not continue? What is the guarantee that the curve will flatten? Lockdown and curve have become inter related.

    Meanwhile I am hearing that my relatives and friends in villages are having more freedom of movement due to their being part time farmers and there is also no shortage of vegetables, local fruits etc.

    Thanks for the smartphones and phone companies in these times. Thanks for the uninterrupted electricity and water supplies.Hope every citizen poor or otherwise enjoys these basic benefits while lockdown continues.
    Time to appreciate things that we take for granted.
    Hope for normalcy and normal life
    We can do without luxuries for the time being.
    The greatest luxury is to see a smile on the face of the poorest.

      This is the time to read bhagavatam, bhagavad gita, upanishads, so many vedic literatures that whole life can be spend reading and meditating on them.
      I am glad i am in touch with iskcon members and all the programs have become confrence programs and whole day engaged in transcendental pleasure that i wont mind whole life like this if bare minimum necessities are available.
      I would suggest others also to look into same direction. If somebody need help in connecting with these free programs and groups, I can help connect you to worldwide from any part of the world. Let me know.
      Watching too many movies will only create mental illness. Daily chanting on hare krishna maha mantra will bring all pleasure.

      I went out yesterday to do groceries, Homedepot and Taco Bell. There was decent crowd in each one of them. I saw majority of people with mask; and some with disposable gloves.

      I think we have some understanding (If not complete) of pandemic , how it spreads. In theory, I think we should reopen at end of April. At same time people should be mandated to use masks, gloves and more stricter personal hygiene. I think most of us will follow. There will be some who will not.

      We can have additional caution where we allow shopping time for older people. Say early 8-AM, designated area in restaurants (or take out only).

      The point is we have to change our habits.

      Well the lockdown will ultimately be relaxed at some stage, that’s a given. But what’s most important is how and when the respective authorities decide to relax and ease the norms. We in India certainly cannot afford a situation of a second wave that’s as harmful (if not more) than the first. There is no way in the world that we can assume that things would be back to where they were 3 months ago anytime within the next 12-18 months. Even after relaxations we might need to keep malls and theaters shut till December (most single screens would shut down by then and just the plex chains like PVR, Inox etc would be hanging by the thread). Retail outlets across India would lose about 2 million+ jobs and even the one’s surviving would hardly be able to witness substantial footfall as the society at large must learn how to adapt to a new way of life that has them out shopping only when ABSOLUTELY necessary. Window shopping, hanging out in groups etc would and should be avoided for at least another year. Wearing face masks must be made mandatory, tourist hotspots might have to be shut till year end, ditto for places of worship. Cricket matches might need to be played in front of crowds with 1/4th the capacity (maybe even entirely empty). Hence even after a relaxation of the lockdown we ought to adapt to a perceptual state of distancing for a long time to come. Beyond all the government measures and advisories, its up to the people at large to understand the importance of living a sanitized, safe and healthy life instead of crowding up and creating chaos at the drop of a hat. Although all this is highly impossible in 80% of the Indian heartland, at least the remaining 20% metropolitan based society ought to make a beginning.

        Even schools and colleges must be shut and wherever possible e learning can be facilitated. This full year has gone to waste due to coronavirus or covid 19.
        Train travel must be controlled or even banned because crowds and train travel go together. Even plane travel is not safe. Mumbai local trains and metro trains must take a break until the virus is eliminated or some vaccine is found.
        Big weddings are a no no.
        I just dont care for film releases because they are not important compared to daily necessities.
        One has to reach out to friends and relatives over phone more frequently to create togetherness and assurance.
        One can try their hand at story writing, poetry writing etc. if they have aptitude.
        Back to good old books.
        One can diet and exercise at home.

          Schools/colleges cannot remain shut all year. Not in smaller towns of course and nor in the cities. They might need to work at 50% strength. Even flights & trains would need the same. They can’t be shut forever. I’m sure we’ll be in a better position 3-4 months from now to take a call on these.

      Once I had blurred vision and extreme anxiety after taking the medication. When you are traveling generally they recommend you start taking two week before departure and end dose, two week after end of journey. I believe it is once a week dose.

      I now don’t take it even when I am traveling to malaria infested region.
