#6 World Cup – Hrithik Roshan World Cup (FINAL KNPH beats Lakshya 8-3)

6 GROUPS OF RANDOMLY CHOSEN FILM THAT STAR HRITHIK ROSHAN – 4 FILMS IN EACH GROUP. The method is simple, groups created based on chronology of release date from Wikipedia.

GROUP STAGE pick 2/3* favourite films from Group of 4 – votes equal points.
BLOGGERS TO VOTE ON WHICH FILM WINS – only need the winning film and if you like a reason for victory. No essays! In The event of a tie score at the end of group stages – the head to head match will be used to determine the winner. In the event of a tie head to head my vote will determine the victor.

*To make up 16 films to participate in knock-out, Group 1, 3, 5 & 6 denoted with * will have 3 films advancing through whereas Group 2 and 4 only 2 teams.

Honourable mentions – None. Hrithik’s filmography gets to 32 films including a number of guest/special appearances. I excluded some outright duds like Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage to get to a list of 24 candidates – really sorry if you were a fan!

  16. Hrithik praises Masaba Masaba and is waiting for season 2.

Hrithik’s best was Kahona Pyaar Hai. He looked fresh and stole India’s heart. India fell in love with him. And in War he shows maturity. In ZNMD, he is the one who pulled the crowds.

Hope these 3 films reach semi finals.

    • Amusing to see everyone rating the trashy KNPH (one of Rakesh Roshan’s weakest films after the shocking Koyla, till he made the cringe worthy Krrish 3) which had nothing going for it barring HR’s Ek Pal Ka Jeena act so highly!

      Like

      • tonymontana Says:

Super 30 was saved by a wonderful Hritik performance, and its first half was rather good. Just that it derails completely in the second half. The opposite is true for Agneepath: pretty solid entertainer and Malhotra got the masala trappings right (rightly timed songs, the brother-sister element, and many others). Besides Hritik, it was a joy to watch Rishi in one of his best acts.

War is a fine entertainer, precisely because of its action and less for its story. I’d pick it over many YRF films and mass films of today but honestly, no comparison to KNPH. The former may appear dated today (even for some back in the day) but it was a nicely executed and conceptualised film for a debutant.

Calling KNPH a trashy movie is harsh: In the sense that it isn’t at ALL a cinematic experience. It was an advertisement – an elongated one, to show how capable HR is as a Hindi-film hero versus a serious actor like Abhishek. Not that it was intended that way; just my opinion. There was NO way Abhi could compete in looks, in dances – very much required of a Hindi film hero at that time – and get greater points.

When you want to name trashy, all those 3 ‘super-hero’ movies with his Dad; I consider them trash..

HR was an ultimate aunties’ dream. India Today — as is expected from it — carried a piece pointing at HR’s body as to what attracts them to him; with arrows conveniently placed!

So in terms of what Papa Roshan – a failure – wanted to achieve through his son – was justified.

HR lived up completely to that expectation!

I have never considered HR an actor – only a star! Only in SUPER 30 did he manage to stir me. I hope he has many more coming like that…

    • It was never him “versus” any Abhishek, John or Vivek. It was only about him himself. And I do believe he deserved a better debut film to showcase his stardom, something that we could’ve relished even right now 20 years later. I see War going that way, in the sense his screen presence & persona through the film would make War watchable even a decade later (akin to AB in Shehenshah). But KNPH was only about the first year of HR’s stardom. Which is disappointing coming from a film maker who gave us Khudgarz, Khoon Bhari Maang & Karan Arjun in the past.

      • Well, I would agree to disagree with you Shivaay. Papa Roshan did the perfect thing; can you please tell me what you missed in HR’s performance in KNPH? As I said, it was an advertisement, meant to lure directors and producers. HR did a fantastic job at that – so much so that he was even considered a threat to SRK! I do get what you are saying, but I just feel, considering the times, father-son duo did a pretty good job!

And the masala job films you are talking about, I don’t think they would have ‘absorbed’ HR completely. He needed a film like KNPH to heft out his ‘masala’!

        • Agree with you An Jo.

Not sure why anybody would be hard on a film like KNPH and keep it mind when it came out. Dare I say if it was made today frame per frame, it would be a big hit today too. There is no masala left in bollywood films so a film like KNPH would be huge today which had plenty of masala in it.

Right or Wrong, at that time Abhi would not even get a role as a hero if his last name was not bachchan. At that time everything was about looks; and hrithik delivered in dancing, looks, physics, action, etc… Positives were lot more than negative.

        • I just missed a good film. Plain & simple. Even by Rakesh Roshan’s filmography, Krrish (2006) was a far superior film to KNPH (despite being fundamentally flawed at various levels). In fact KNPH would perhaps rate as RR’s worst after Koyla in my books. Amusing that Sid Anand “advertised” HR in a far superior way than his own dad did with War (which is a sort of resurgence of his on screen stardom in a suave image, the last of which we witnessed way back in 2006 with Dhoom 2).

This thread is a reminder how shockingly mediocre the Hritik filmography is. Salman and SRK have, on the whole, may have come up with a higher number of turkeys, but a man as serious about his profession as HR deserved better. There are some fine action entertainers and the odd good film for the ages but these are few and far between. Makes one wonder what exactly went wrong in his career. I believe it were the terribly mediocre films following his debut that did his decision making in. Between KNPH and Koi Mil Gaya (not counting the okayish Fiza and Mission Kashmir) is a series of utterly forgettable films. He must have become extremely conscious afterwards.

Again witnessing many preferring a ripped off mediocre sci fi Koi Mil Gaya over a toned down, non hyperbolic & hard hitting Lakshya which despite a lackluster screenplay was one of the rare Hindi films with world class action sequences (tracer bullets being fired, realistic enemy fortification, mortar & machine gun nest construction, the hill climb) the kind that we’ve witnessed only in Madras Cafe & Uri ever since. HR too was exceptionally restraint in Lakshya (barring a couple of nostril flaring incidents, watching him perform in the Agar Main Kahoon song was delightful).

He was exceptionally versatile in Super 30 & underplayed it well in Lakshya & Jodha Akbar. He just doesn’t have enough body of work for me to genuinely like anything beyond Lakshya, JA, ZNMD & S30 (War & D2 being good popcorn masala films). Comparisons with Saif are ridiculous as none of Saif’s performances barring Omkara & Tanhaji to an extent would ever stand out. With the range shown from KMG to Lakshya to D2/War to S30 I feel HR is a vastly talented performer when he’s not attempting to overdo his act & would outweigh Srk & Salman by miles had he had more films in his kitty.

Hrithik is what it takes to be a super star. Like Salman who did almost same genre every year in theblast decade, anyone who can repeat it is Hrithik. He was the best in Dhoom and War. He just needs to keep doing similar genre and will keep delivering blockbuster. People will never get tired of him. This is a rarity among actors. You need to be blessed.

Could end up as a super over. Like Bill Lawry would say “It’s all happening at the SS…!”

        • LOL,

In all honesty, i’ll take KNPH over Lakshya any day. I’m a sucker for masala films and KNPH had plenty of it. It’s very easy to criticize masala films but not many can make it that works big time. Otherwise everyone would make it and make big money on it. Very few can make is successfully.

This was true in every era, pick up any magazine or interview from Manmohan Desai era and his films were called brainless (which some of us consider “Classic” today).
Yes, some are able to make masala films which are more sensible but on average, it’s very hard to do what Desai, David Dhawan were able to do. Rakesh Roshan made few good masala films too.

As the greatest showman of India used to say, it’s very easy to make someone cry than make them laugh.

  98. I watched Lakshya just to make an informed decision.
I liked the training and punishments segment.
I liked the bonhomie among the army personnel.
Wondered about Damle coolly drinking coffee and asking his men to take impossible risks. It would have helped if he had been shown taking similar risks and lost a limb or two in the bargain.
Did not like Romy using and dumping Rajiv Goel.
Many shone inspite of having bit roles.
    Some cliched scenes.
It would have been good if the film ended with the flag flying and the hero looking at it with pride and happiness. And the hero should have one more to hoist the flag to make it a team effort instead of glorification of one person. At the end of it armed forces is a team.

Hrithik was helped by a fantastic cast and a good script.

Long back his father did a somewhat similar role in Kaamchor.

With KNPH I am choosing it due to what I felt at the time rather than what I may think of the film now.

This thread is created to celebrate his success and talent.

In the competition of one movie over another we have KNPH. Many good movies got eliminated in the last round like what has happened with other stars.

In the end every star has got the movie which undermines his talent. That’s the format of this contest.

For all its strengths, Lakshya on the whole is a pretty dull watch. KNPH as someone mentioned is a complete package with some deft direction. Rakesh Roshan should have stuck to the genre of revenge thrillers instead of the superhero films. Those exceeded their welcome beyond KMG.

      • I think this is similar to Swades vs. DDLJ final for SRK. A meaningful, well performed and executed movie that is quite slow, pretty dull (Lakshya/Swades) vs popular cinema that is entertaining and has a lot of historical relevance to the star in question (KNPH/DDLJ). If a certain craze is created for a movie it is likely to last longer in memories than a better time in moment movie.

Also agree Hrithik has not done enough movies. Period. Forget good movies, he can be forgiven for that but even in his universe of good looks, stunts and dancing he could have done more action/romance movies. War is a perfect example – if Hrithik brings his A game to box office in the right movie he is pretty unstoppable.

        • 1. Swades > DDLJ anyday anytime. Esp 2 decades down the line.

          2. KNPH is no DDLJ (at least KMG had a chance). KNPH is more in the Raja Hindustani league, an accidental mega blockbuster that’s an embarrassment 20 years down the line. Amitabh Bachchan had a horrendous MARD in the same category while for SRK its gotta be Mohabbatein in my opinion.

      • honestly ZNMD doesn’t do much for me. I guess I am not really a fam of any HR movie. I can find movies like Swades, CDI of SRK that are topnotch like most Aamir movies. Dabang and MPK for Salman, Akshay has few of Neeraj Pandey’s good movies. Ajay has decent stuff too. But HR is lacking.

Aamir is a poor man’s Hrithik in Hrithik’s space

I prefer the coming of age, historical movies of Aamir (dch, mp plus 90s to Lakshya, JA).
Aamir’s out of his depth in larger than life roles like D3 and even TOH. Hrithik is better suited.

ZNMD is a good movie but the all round tracks (farhan, abhay) are good too.

Think final would have been closer if ZNMD made it or even Dhoom 2.

    • I dont think Hrithik could have done better as Firangi Mallah than Aamir. It is not a stunt based role ala Dhoom series. It is more a caricaturish film like those comic ones or a fairy tale thing. While a miscasted D3 had done a phenomenal business and loved by masses who were not that critical of aamir.
It is not about poor man’s or rich man’s. We cant call tiger as poor man’s Hritik. Because Hritik is more than Tiger in terms of looks, demeanour and an X factor. Hritik is someone who cant be slotted easily. He may surprise us in future.

Aamir was fine in TOH. But hritik in Dhoom 3 wud have looked and danced better. Hritik fits in the slot of candyfloss action films be it Dhoom or War. Or those horrendous Krrish films.

Anyways, any sane individual would opt for Lakshya, ZNMD, Super 30 or even Jodha Akbar and War well ahead of KNPH in HR’s filmography (including HR himself?). I’d still have been okay with KMG winning this one (if it really had to be a Roshan Sr film) but putting KNPH ahead of Lakshya & ZNMD is like putting Raja Hindustani ahead of Sarfarosh or DCH.

Kind of indicative of the general beliefs. In any other world, there are high chances of DDLJ, Lagaan and KNPH winning too.
I still remember the box office reports of KNPH when it came out. It was simply unstoppable for the first few weeks, and the craze for HR was palatable.
