I know. But there is a difference between eating meat and using animal products. We all use belts, shoes, purses, bags, medicines which also has animal origin. Some prefer vegan diet because it is more healthy according to them than for any moral or ethical consideration. Kohli may belong to that category of vegans. And leather products are made mostly from dead animals than living animals.

In a good news for football, that has been brought to a halt worldwide due to the outbreak of coronavirus, Ajax star Abdelhak Nouri, who collapsed during a friendly against Werder Bremen almost three years ago, recovered from coma, his family confirmed, adding that he had been responding to football on TV since he woke up.

The footballer, who suffered permanent brain damage, is now being treated from home. Nourie had collapsed during Ajax’s pre-season friendly against German club Werder Bremen. He required emergency treatment from paramedics on the field and had to be airlifted from the field.

It stoked their political consciousness, especially that of Richards. He wore a wristband in the colours of the Rastafari movement. “Green for the land of Africa. Gold for the wealth that was stripped away. Red for the blood that was shed,” Richards explained in the documentary ‘Fire in Babylon’. He was a friend of Bob Marley and the Wailers and used their protest song ‘Get Up, Stand Up’ as his personal anthem.

From Greig’s verbal taunt arose a cold, hard fury. Like every one of his teammates, Richards took it personally, savaging the English bowlers, plundering 829 runs in seven innings, with two double hundreds including his highest of 291, forewarning bowlers around the world of the brutality he was to subject them in years to come.

  11. When I saw Rahul Dravid for the first time, it was in a match held at Sharjah probably in 1998. My first impression was that he had a ‘compact’ name – the name did not end with a consonant as most Indian names do (was a ‘compact’ name according to a 13-year old me). The second thing that struck me was his helmet which was different from that of others with a grey rectangular patch that protected the batsman’s ears. The helmet fit his persona like a Tee along with a compact stance with no part of his slender body protruding outward as to disturb his poise. When he stood to face a bowler, he looked like he was sculpted like an automaton whose only purpose of existence was to face balls with a sturdy bat.

If all these initial impressions sound like they are positive, I must clarify that they certainly were not, owing to the way he paced his innings that day. I don’t remember exactly how much he scored but all I felt about him that day was that he was blocking not only easy deliveries but also my opportunity to see my idol Mohammed Azharuddin bat. I still cannot define precisely why I loved watching Azharuddin who was in complete contrast to Dravid but what amazes me even more today was my adolescent fascination to mimic the former’s singular gait – raised shoulders and a slightly hunched back that made him look taller than even an actually taller Venkatesh Prasad.

One can say, with Dada, in terms of strategies, and with Tendulkar, in terms of taking on the opposition head-on, things changed for India. That I agree, but to take a chance, first, one needs to ‘survive.’ Champions are built of a different mettle. Without Laxman and Dravid’s defeat-defying knocks, the match was gone. You can only build a house if you have a solid foundation!!

A injured Stokes comes back to get a couple in the second innings. England depend on him so much. A world cup win followed by an unbelievable Ashes winning 100 in the fourth innings. Stokes is a superhero this year.

Yaseer Shah with four wickets shows what a dust bowl bully Ashwin is. Since India faced problems with England tail last time they were in the UK for Tests.

England need to revise their batting order for next innings. Pope at 3, Buttler at 4. Since Buttler seems to bat best with Pope at the other end. Let’s see. Chasing 250+ against the Pakistani attack with the ball gripping and spinning will not be easy. Pakistan pacers are looking threatening as well. This promises to be a humdinger of a series of Test cricket.

Holder, what were you thinking putting England to bat on winning the toss twice? For only that goof did WI lose both their Tests at Old Trafford, Manchester this year.

On Friday, legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar found himself in the middle of a controversy for allegedly making an unsavoury comment against Virat Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma after RCB captain’s worst performance during an IPL game on Thursday.

While commentating during the IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab, the former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar criticised Virat Kohli over his poor performance against Kings XI Punjab after the RCB captain dropped two important catches and also got out much early in the game.

Gavaskar, who was commentating when Virat Kohli came to bat at the third over of the second innings, made a remark that involved Virat Kohli’s actor wife Anushka.

Referring to the poor form of Virat Kohli, Gavaskar wittingly said, “Lockdown tha to sirf Anushka ki bowling ki practice ki unhone, wo video dekhi hai, usse to kuch nahi hona hai.” (He only faced Anushka’s bowling during the lockdown, I have watched that video, nothing is going to happen from that)”. Sunil Gavaskar was referring to a video that had gone viral on social media in May this year, where Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma were seen playing cricket on the terrace of their house. A full Lockdown was in force at that time, and sportspersons were not allowed to visit playgrounds.

Nor do we see International T20 have freak incidents like 8 sixes in 2 overs or 7 in 9 deliveries (Russell vs Rcb in 2019) or the perpetual slow coach MSD (whose lost India more games batting at a snail’s pace at no. 6/7 in the last 5 years than he won the team during his prime when he batted at 3/4/5) almost getting 26 off the final over to win a game. Either the quality of death bowling is totally pathetic or the IPL games are pre planned for an anti climax. Coz even by the usually mediocre T20 standards, these events are way to repetitive.

However spot fixing was impossible in the pre digital era & it took more than half the team to fix a result entirely (something that even Cronje & Azhar struggled with despite being captains). T20 cricket as a format is a gold mine for rampant spot fixing & with the technology we have today coupled with the subtle nature of the game, its impossible to detect (unlike a test match where obvious efforts of throwing a game can be observed as a pattern like Mohd Amir’s no balls in 2010).

If Dhoni was so conscious about milestones why would he retire from Tests after playing 95 Tests without going for the 100.

        • Dhoni gave up on test cricket post the 8 consecutive defeats in UK & Aus in 2011-12 & in fact, never bothered reinventing himself or the team in the longest format. He almost went on record saying he had no desire to play test cricket further, yet continued captaining till 2014 in Srinivasan’s influence (including an embarrassing home series defeat to Eng in 2012). Post test retirement in 2014 even hid ODI game went slack batting lower down the order at 6/7 & never being able to accelerate. He was never the Yuvraj or Pandya kinda stricker who’d get you a 20 ball 40. Even in his prime he needed 5-6 overs to get his eye in before changing gears. Which is one of the biggest reasons Ganguly continued insisting he bat at 4/5 in odi’s. But MSD’s defiance & carelessness batting lower down the order cost India dearly. Just the lack of intent was appalling in the 2nd half of MSD’s career for a player of his experience & calibre (just like scoring 10 off 13 in a run chase & then hitting 3 sixes when your team needs 36 off 4).

Pant’s UK hundred in the 4th innings which almost revived India’s chances (with Rahul’s 149) was a classic. We eventually lost but the fight put up by the 2 was memorable.

Also somebody as Yusuf would have kept Jadhav on his toes. But now complacency has set in. He can just be invisible and get away with making 7.8 cr

“This is a personal decision of Amir, which the PCB respects.”

Amir angered head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis with his abrupt decision to retire from Test cricket in July last year.

Younis accused Amir of “ditching Pakistan” while continuing to play league cricket to earn money.

  73. Technology being what it was in 1974, I heard rather than saw India fold up for 42, the previous lowest score, on the radio. The ‘Summer of 42’ is what college wits called it, after a mildly titillating movie of the same name released a couple of years earlier. Unlike Virat Kohli’s men, one of those vintage losers managed the distinction of double figures: Eknath Solkar made eighteen. He even hit a six. Then, as now, we didn’t lose all ten wickets because our No. 11 was injured.

The psychological difference was that in 1974, we were the poor relations of world cricket, not its paymasters. We didn’t expect to win. Ajit Wadekar had done wonders with his team over the previous three years, defeating West Indies and England in away series in 1971 and then beating England at home, but Indian expectations were shaped by decades of defeat. The Indian team had been hammered in the first Test that summer, so when they collapsed in the second, we were disconsolate but not surprised. Despite three magical spinners-Bishan Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna and Bhagwat Chandrasekhar – and two first-rate batsmen in Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath, a win was always a nice surprise. Post-defeat depression was our default setting.
