An official remake goes HORRIBLY wrong, film fails to scare, lacks comedy,Extreme Overacting, low class making, Honestly #AkshayKumar weakest solo film after Singh is Bling. Overall will turn out to be a FAILURE in Digital world #LaxmiiReview

Yes… I agree.. #Laxmii will hurt Hindu Sentiments… I don’t know weather its done purposely or not and thats upto audience to decide but when you make a film you have to balance respect… Tarazu ek he taraf kyu jhuka dete ho.. Not expected this from someone like #AkshayKumar

Done with Laxmii… My God I need a pain killer.. #Laxmii

The only good thing in Laxmii is Sharad Kelkar…

I am really happy that #Laxmii is a OTT release, or else distributors ki India mai Lashe Bich Jaati….

    • My 1st comment after trailer was that objectively it looks a movie shot in 2011 (same year as original) and nothing has been done to make it current. Making scene to scene remake after almost a decade will never work. The technique and craft needs to be updated even though it’s the same story. Also, Akshay’s image is not the same and it would have worked 10 years back not in 2020!

Will try to watch it within next few days or weekend!

I don’t think anyone realizes she’s even in the movie (except that Burj Khalifa song which could be sp apperance). So, it’s good in that way.

For many Akshay is hero and heroine in Laxmii!

        • Firstly the topic is about a Twitter post you put up which insinuated that Laxmmi Bomb had these scenes because of a Musilm producer and writer, but I merely pointed out that it was a straightforward remake of a Tamil film which was written by a very religious Hindu guy. If there is Hinduphobia or indeed you feel it exists, raise valid points not stuff taken off uneducated twitter feeds.

I don’t understand how Macron comes into this discussion. He was right in breaking the Voldemort effect and calling out radical Islamist extremism by its name. I fully support him. But don’t divert from the fact that the Tweet you posted was highly misleading and false.

          https://swarajyamag.com/movies/review-akshay-kumars-laxmii-has-an-islamic-and-anti-saffron-propaganda-written-all-over

Perhaps nothing gives away the religious agenda of the makers of Laxmii better than the subtle changes made to the original Kanchana.

In Kanchana, the hero is named Raghava who spends his time wooing Priya, sister of his sister-in-law. In Laxmii, the hero is Aasif who is married to Rashmi. Later, Rashmi’s father realises his mistake of rejecting Aasif.

In Kanchana, Raghava fears ghosts and turns to Hindu gods when feeling scared. In Laxmii, Aasif exposes Hindu sadhus as frauds. In a song-and-dance sequence, Aasif disrobes ghosts to reveal their saffron lowers.

In Kanchana, the Rahim bhai who adopts a young kinnar is an alcoholic. In Laxmii, the one who is alcoholic is Rashmi’s mother. Abdul chacha sips only tea.

In Kanchana, a Hindu school principal supports education of a transgender child and applauds her publicly. No such character is there in Laxmii. In fact, besides Abdul chacha, no one supports Laxmii.

In Kanchana, the kinnar is a devotee of Bhagwan. So such scenes in Laxmii.

In Kanchana, the villain couple visits a baba who is clad in white. In Laxmii, this baba wears saffron with Jai Shri Ram loudly printed on it. He also readily agrees to help the couple despite their criminal past.

In Kanchana, the ghost of the kinnar pleads to Bhagwan Narsimha to let her inside the temple in the climax. The ghost tells Narsimha to destroy her if she is on the side of adharma but make way for her if she is on the side of dharma. Narsimha chooses the latter. Kanchana’s ghost enters the temple, catches the villain but, to maintain the sanctity of the place, drags him out and kills him. In Laxmii, the ghost screams – β€œLaxmii cannot enter the temple, but Aasif can!” And so, Aasif barges into the temple, desecrates it and breaks a pillar before murdering the villain. No Kanchana-like Bhagwad Geeta shloka plays in the background in Laxmii.

If Kanchana has a feel of Nehru-style secularism, Laxmii is laced with Jinnah-like open communalism. If Kanchana has a β€˜good Hindu-bad Hindu-good Muslim’ theme, Laxmii has a β€˜bad Hindu-worse Hindu-saviour Muslim’ propaganda.

All Hindu-friendly scenes of Kanchana have been discarded like waste in Laxmii. In addition, Laxmii promotes Muslim occult practitioners.

        • I see no response from Aman on this, figures !

          Like

        • What people think is Jinnah style communalism is nothing but changes made to the film specifically for a Eid release and appealing to the Gulf markets. It was especially obvious when Burj Khalifa came out, it’s about nothing but money at the end of the day. None of this is particularly offensive or insulting IMO.

Plus they seem to have forgotten the highly energetic Bum Bhole song, that is a group of transgenders celebrating and revelling in the praise of Mahadev.

          This is communalism?

What is purely commercial calculation is being made to appear far more malicious than what it is. I object only to that. In fact, more outrage has to be about the painfully obvious age gap between the leads (although I don’t want to wade into a fight with the Akki fans, come on, he’s got grey chest hair and Kiara looks a fresh cherub)

TOI rating of 2/5 is indeed bad as for me they are the benchmark in consistency. These kind of movies need 2.5 to 3 rating.

The over the top comedy scenes doesnt appeal in home screenings. They are made to be consumed in public. Same scenes in HF4 which had the thratre in splits appeared damp while watching on television.

Will wait for a theatre release as clearly this is not a small screen cinema.

Puritans of the game have Test cricket in a corner of their heart while T20 attracts the audience who never saw cricket before. In between these two, ODI cricket is gradually losing its prominence.” ~ perfectly summed up. Unfortunately, the only reason ODI cricket still exists between the classic Test format and the rabid T20 one is because ODI’s still got the quad yearly World Cup, the biggest event in the sport (unlike the fake T20 world cup that ICC’s trying to promote as competitive alternative to the Champions Trophy but is factually a joke!)

35 years of the pungent, disgustingly lousy joke of a so called “mass entertainer” called MARD! A movie single handedly responsible for shifting the balance of power from genuinely classy mass entertainers like Deewaar, Zanjeer, Sholay, Mera Gaon Mera Desh & Haathi Mere Saathi to the absurd incomprehensible bollocks of a film maker we call Manmohan Desai, only to be rivalled by the further incomprehensible chauvinistic rubbish dished out by the Barjatya’s and Johar’s. Unfortunately, Desai’s unwanted legacy continues till date with the likes of Prabhu Deva, Rohit Shetty and the Sajid/Farah siblings.

Agree, about Mard that it was lowblow masala film. it was also decline of Desai. Even the songs were average including tambu main bambu which was c grade.

However, what Desai gave prior to it from 60s to early 80s, one can’t forget…

I remember even back than there were many publication which called his films trash, and perhaps they were but it created a world, it gave and escape to millions of people.

On a sided note, i don’t think AAA is his best. Desai himself says it’s not. Producer were short on money so there were parts where he had to take short route. His best is Naseeb.

      • Beta Naveen, calm down.

Akshay couldn’t make movie like Mard work. This had more to do with desai than bachchan. Desai knew how to make silly things work and work at a huge level where movie becomes the highest grosser or top 3 of the year. And you can check off the number of movies too, it wasn’t desai had one movie every 3 to 4 years, he once had 4 hit movies in one year.

Year 1977, amar akbar anothy, highest grosser of the year and launched amitabh into what became amitabh (away from angry young man image and became all rounder), dharam veer, 2nd highest grosser of the year which also gave dharam a “He-Man” tag, and also had two other big hits parvarish and chach-bhatija. For most this would be enough for life time, desai did it in one year.

But going back to Mard, it truly started quick decline for desai.

by the way, if you want to see a truly full blown masala film, watch Naseeb. It is perhaps best big screen fun masala ever made. I had watched it 3 times when it had released. Naseeb and Qurbaani i think are the two best masala films.

      • MARD was an out-and-out Amitabh Bachchan and has very less to do with Desai. It was mainly Bachchan’s pull and charisma that made the people throng to the theaters. No other actor would be able to pull of this kind of an absurd role. Desai was in great form till COOLIE (1983) By Desai’s rich standards, MARD was a bad movie and showed that Desai had started floundering. His next, GANGA JAMUNA SARASWATI, further confirmed that he had lost it.

But AB continued to be in top-notch form till 1991, with AAKHREE RAASTA (June 1986) being one of his exceptional, master-class performances in double-roles.

I’d rather watch Deewaar, Zanjeer or Trishul on 10 repeat viewings than sit through Mard or GJS. This is beyond terrible filmmaking. It not merely outdoes itself in outlandish scenes, it repeatedly spits in the face of the viewer for having chosen to watch this. An absolute assault on the senses, this would make Housefull 4 seem like a decent effort in moviemaking. Nothing, absolutely nothing is worth salvaging.

Need to know what made Akshay okay this script. In fact, this pretty much confirms why he was ultimately okay with release it on Ott. I don’t know whether it hurts Hindu sentiments, but portraying the transgender community as some sort of loud, over the top and violent people with demonic instincts is in really terrible taste.

    • I am sucker to these observations by SC. Have to admit India has the best SC in the world. Absolutely blissful, unbiased and for the people and true to constitution.

      Taken from NDTV: MUST READ

Today, the Supreme Court had some tough words for the Maharashtra government over the TV anchor’s arrest last Wednesday.

According to the Mumbai police, Anvay Naik, who designed the sets of Republic TV, had left a suicide note blaming Mr Goswami and two others for dues he alleged had not been paid to him.

In court, the police and the Maharashtra government said it was the duty of the state to protect the victim (Naiks).

The Supreme Court questioned whether not paying up money amounted to abetting suicide and asked: “If tomorrow, a person commits suicide in Maharashtra and blames the government, then will the Chief Minister be arrested?”

Justice Chandrachud said governments should “ignore taunts on TV” as our democracy is “extraordinarily resilient”, referring to Mr Goswami’s criticism of the Maharashtra government.

“But the answer is simple. If you don’t like a channel then don’t watch it… if left to me, I do not watch the channel and you may differ in ideology, but if constitutional courts do not interfere today, we are traveling the path of destruction undeniably,” said the judge.

“If state governments target individuals, they must realise there is an apex court to protect liberty of citizens… We must send a message today to the high courts as well. Please exercise your jurisdiction to uphold personal liberty,” the court said.

The top court observed that trial courts and High Courts do not grant bail in matters of personal liberty. “The cases then flood to the Supreme Court which is already burdened with workload,” it said.

Mr Goswami’s lawyer Harish Salve had argued in the hearing: “Is Arnab Goswami a terrorist? Are there any murder charges on him? Why can’t he be given bail?”

This mob flooding imdb rating is also retaliatory and is done by them.

There would still be genuine ones but now imdb needs to filter the process and make sure new users dont carpet bomb the rating. Same thing is happenning on Twitter. Most reviews are given by new users or users having same set of followers.

I think it’s okay so far. I could be due to very low expectation based on the reviews i had read.

    Few thoughts:
    – I don’t think i saw anything in first 30 minutes that would offend any group
    – couple songs they showed are very bad including the placements of it.
    – kiera better watch her weight or she will go rani mukarji way very fast. she looks plumpy already.
    – akshay looks old with kiera, age is catching up fast.
    – have not seen the original but was it also horror/comedy or just horror (I think if movie was straight horror, it would be very good. I can see in the last couple minutes of 30 minutes i saw where it was getting little silly)
    – will try to watch rest of it over the weekend

  45. Laxmii Is A Success On Digital
    Thursday 12 November 2020 13.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The Akshay Kumar horror comedy Laxmii has scored on digital by recording around 37 lakhs (3.7 million) concurrent views on release. This is a record beating the 23 lakh (2.3 million) of Dil Bechara earlier this year but it has to remembered that was a freely available to all while Laxmii was on the paid platform only.

There are live cricket events which are higher than Laxmii but in terms of films and other content its the best ever seen. But the success is relative as what are you beating. There are major films on OTT but they are always after a theatrical release. Not much can be said about the films premiered on digital so far like Gulabo Sitabo, Dil Bechara, Gunjan Saxena or Sadak 2 and others. The public would hardly be interested in these films after the trailers. The content was very poor putting it kindly and then the other competition is all these web series which are like C grade films which will hardly take openings in lakhs if they were films and that is hardly any competition for Laxmii also.

There are always mad figures that go around like a couple of weeks back there were some reports that some web series called Mirzapur 2 had 16 million views (1.6 crore) over a week and if we take that at face value then the numbers of Laxmii are nothing and it cant get anywhere near even in a week. The foreign OTT platforms do not give subscription numbers in India but in the last note to investors in the US stock market in August the second biggest market for both Amazon Prime and Netfix was United Kingdom and here Prime had 8 million subscribers while Netflix was at 12.5 million. In India Amazon prime is ahead of the two so that means both are under 8 million subscribers and that pretty much puts the these 16 million numbers into perspective. On a side note sequels first started in Hollywood with films like Jaws 2, Rocky 2, Superman 2 etc and only in India someone can think of a name like Mirzapur 2 which is tacky as can be. Cinema has also seen such classic names like Tum Bin 2 and Bheja Fry 2.

Disney Hotstar has around 10 million subscribers in India and the reason why it leads is IPL cricket matches which also fetch the best viewership numbers. The release of Laxmii saw 28% of the Hotstar base viewing and the film and there were 9 lakh (900k) apprx new subscribers which came on the day for Laxmii. There are many criterion to measure sucess on OTT with the main being the extra subscribers a product brings and then in the long run its about the minutes invested and its just not views as views can last for just a minute or two. Here the 9 lakh is a record and probably the main sign of success but the question here is do they stick or its just for the film due to a star like Akshay Kumar and then gone. Now eventually where Laxmii goes its difficult to judge but its realistic to expect around 75-80% of the Hotstar base to watch the film which will will mean an audience of around 80 lakh in the final run taking the subscriber base as 10.9 million (1.09 crore) now. But again here a lot of content on the platform could be hitting this much of the base in the long run so thats not much of a guide.

Laxmii is a huge success in terms of what it is done on OTT but that is because it is basically competing with garbage and everything which has come before does not have any numbers (Excluding dil Bechara maybe). There has been nothing at the anticipation level of Laxmii that saw a premiere on OTT, its mainly C grade stuff on OTT. The question is where would it stand if a Sooryavanshi or Radhe or Shamshera or 1983 came in the same way but that cannot be judged and may never be judged.

The satellite results will also give an idea about the film but Dil Bechara did fail badly on satellite after good results on OTT. The potential box office ranges of Laxmii in a normal scenario will be given in time.

Laxmii was targeting 150 cr nett in theatres to become a hit as per the budget and it would have done easily in a clash.

Another success for Akshay Kumar and his reign continues.
Am not happy with his choice this time but am confident that his ability to cater to every kind of audience in India is unparalelled.

A few character arcs are boring, especially the ones involving Bachchan and Roy Kapoor, but when Basu let’s every actor shone and the direction is so assured, you can’t explain. The film moves fast, very fast, and you can’t find faults when you don’t get enough time for that.

2020 marks 15 years of the redefining Batman Begins & the beginning of the big screen blockbuster film maker Christopher Nolan. On the desi front it also marks 15 years of some of our most iconic Ab Sr “second innings” hits like the tacky & hilarious Bunty aur Babli (the kinda comedy i dearly miss during times of Golmaal & Housefull) , the hard hitting readaptation of Godfather in Sarkar as well as a masterful performance in Black.

SARKAR, of course, as Ramu said, was a terrific tribute to AB’s iconicity and Coppola.

        • No doubt, but such movies wont work unless you make people weep in buckets. Subtle emotions are good for western sensibilities or for us who don’t need reinforced experience.

Earlier in 70s, the cinema was called a success only when women and men used to be found weeping during emotional melodramatic scenes.

The same scene in Mard where Dara Singh, the king was made to grind the flour machine which would feed his praja had people in theatres clapping with joy, anger, dismay and respect.

On the contrary, I have seen many people in theatre do not get sarcasm or an intelligent scene immediately. Hence most of the coming of age cinemas or comedies are flops and only a post release / after thought legends.

However OTT dramas work fine. People are okay to show their tears or laughter to a PJ which usually is considered embarrassing in several western cultures and sensibilities. I am certain most here including me are same and would not like to be seen weeping in cinemas.

        • Baghban is a very bad film made in the style of a KJo film with a BR Chopra message at the end. Though K3G is endlessly reviled, most of its moments are well integrated, even the Jana Gana Mana scene can be drawn back to the start of the flashback with Kajol and the Indian flag. But Baghban has an entirely unnecessary sequence with Salman and Mahima overseas, which only made a lengthy movie even lengthier.

Most importantly, I just couldn’t imagine Big B and Hema in this situation. They felt way too well-to-do and affluent to be going through all this and I’m the guy who loves K3G so I have a high threshold for illogic.

The director’s intentions were even more clear with Baabul, which was the sort of routine melodrama we’d see in the 70s or 80s, wearing modern clothing.

Piku also reminds us of how much Hindi cinema would miss the delightful Irrfan Khan, an extraordinary actor in himself. Then there’s 5 years of the thrilling Badlapur, Sriram Raghavan’s best till date imo. Stunning act by Nawazuddin and an unusually tolerable Varun.

What is the ground reality in India?
My cousins in small town of Gujarat says that it is far worse than what’s being reported, lot more death due to covid but families are paying off doctors/hospital by having them write Heart Attack on the death certificate so they can get the body and do proper burial/cremation.

My brother in law in mumbai says that people are fed up and they just want everything opened up, even if it kills them.

Theatres mein to its like watch it in first 2 weeks. Else you would not get best timings.

Hence taking advantage of this comfort. Also i may not like it on television. HF4- I did not. Hence enthu to watch Laxmii is less. πŸ™‚

    • Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari Opening Day Report
      Monday 16 November 02.30 IST
      Box Office India Trade Network

Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari opened yesterday (Sunday) to a limited response but it was not that there was no audience. Its the first release after more than 8 months so in reality the first objective is some people do come to the theatres (Is Love Enough – Sir released on Friday which makes that the first release but that film would hardly get any footfalls in a normal scenario). The hope was a 3 crore nett type of number which the film would have got roughly if it had a normal non holiday release pre covid19. Its basically the big holiday factor compensating the covid19 factor but that was too much to ask for at this present time.

The film got a huge release in the metros with multiplexes going to 14 and 16 shows but many cinemas still remain shut due to rental issues over the non opening in the covid19 period. The audience count in the shows screened were in the 20-25 range in the afternoon and evenings on average so people have come but the industry had hoped for more to give confidence for more releases to come over the next month or so.

The North India numbers (especially NCR) are a struggle considering the strong release in these parts and because this is where the film should have outperformed due and it could be that covid19 infections are on the rise in Delhi which makes the public more wary to come out.

Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari is not exactly that big film to get the audience out but it could be worse that something like the Diwali week OTT releases like Chhalaang and Ludo came. The public reports are average for the film but its going to the main film in cinemas for sometime to come so it remains to be seen what happens.

The collections and territory numbers will be given over the next few days as its slow reporting and not like the normal DCRs which were there 7-8 months back.

In all honesty, I didn’t mind the film at all. It’s not as bad as what some are making it out to be. I know some here looks at everything from political and religious lense so it’s less about the movie itself and more about how they feel politically/religiously.

I know nothing about the original and watched the movie as is.

Some parts are silly but it’s okay. Songs are horrible. The movie did have a good message towards the end.

Overall I would give it 2 out of 5. (Not sure if the rating would have been low if i had watched it in one shot)

Timepass movie and I think it’s like the 4th film I’ve seen on Hotstar so I’ll take anything to get my moneys worth for the annual subscription.

This is no Housefull thou which was multistar, couple solid songs for mass (Bala, Ek Chumma) which works in theatre. Laxmii would have hard time in theatre.

    • I just don’t see how money can be recovered from OTT for a movie made for Theatre with big to decent size budget.

Unless you can show that x number of people subscribed that month when movie was about to release on that platform, otherwise it’s no benefit.

So if there are 5 million subscriber for Disney/Hotstar and if not many signed up right before laxmii released, what good is it to OTT platform? They already had 5 million subscriber before and what difference does it makes if 3 million or 5 million watched it.

If you can prove that there were 3 million subscriber and with the news of Laxmii releasing on OTT, that OTT had 2 million additional subscriber that signed up, than you can prove that it’s due to laxmii they’re making profit.

      Think of Pay-per-View events

          For simplicity, if it’s USA user, that’s 900k * $45 = $40.5 million (is that almost 300 crore rupees?)

    The Ballad of Buster Scruggs:

I’m not exactly a sucker for western films, though I sometimes find them intriguing thanks to the rawness and violence. Didn’t like Good, Bad and Ugly that much, though I find it’s somewhat distant cousin Once Upon a Time in the West sheer delight. Other films I have loved in this genre are The Hateful Eight and Django Unchained, but mostly thanks to Tarantinoverse and the ultimate spin he gave to the genre.

I was kind of sceptical before watching The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, as Im not a true blue Coen Brothers fan, not counting Fargo and No Country for Old Men. This was a delight, though, an anthology with each of the six stories a rather unique and satisfying experience. Loved the uniqueness in each story, and how the frames have so much to tell even when there is supposedly nothing happening in the story. Needless to say, the brothers have attained mastery over minimalism and mood.

Give this a try if you haven’t. Eager to check out their brand of westerns. Guess a movie marathon and a revisit to their other stuff should book me for the next few days

  70. Amazon Sceptical About Coolie No-1 after many Big Films like Sadak 2, Laxmii Debacle on OTT Platforms

    Laxmii Debacle

Laxmii was the big attraction for Disney+ Hotstar as it released in the Diwali week on November 9. The opening day viewership of the horror-comedy was acclaimed to be the highest for any direct to digital film streaming on a paid platform.

But the viewership dropped the next days on account of poor public suggestions and availability of different choices within the digital world. Moreover, the movie was said to be a two-hour clench your head, from beginning to the end, by the audience. The major left out of Raghava Lawrence’s film was, that he had shot an outdated 2011 story with all the latest 2020 type of equipments and technicalities.

According to a report by an insider, the amount paid by Disney+ Hotstar to acquire Laxmii and the expectations with respect to a spike in viewership and subscriber base, Laxmii managed to attain merely 50% of the target in the opening week benchmark.

They basically paid the amount based on the names involved like Akshay Kumar and Raghava Lawrence and the goodwill of the stakeholders in the market.

        • Let’s be honest here, I too expected Laxmmi to be a hit if it was a theatrical release. But it clearly underperformed, there have been very reviled films on OTT recently but none have caused this flurry of articles because no film has been bought for 120 crores. You can’t dismiss every other source and newspaper as Khan paid or Anti-Akshay.

It’s good that OTT has woken up to the fact that producers are using it as a dumping ground.

          Like

        • I think that’s fair. No need to believe any single source as gospel (for BOI fanatics), take each one and form a sensible view.
Most reviews for Laxmii are terrible. Just like Housefull 4. The assumption that because HF4 succeeded it qualifies that Laxmii too would have is just an assumption. It’s like saying if Dabangg was a blockbuster, Dabangg 2 and 3 would be.
Yes OTT experience is different to cinema and yes maybe Laxmii may have done good at box office BUT it was set to collide with Radhe too…in a clash you don’t know at all.
I’d rather assume CEO of Disney Hotstar won’t admit to anything. No purchaser will say after a week ‘damn I made a stupid investment here’- that is obvious.
Rest you can see reviews of Laxmii everywhere – they are awful and holding onto results of HF4 as consolation is like Trump right now. A bitter loser.

Laxmii is no housefull 4. housefull 4 is multistar and had couple mass songs and enough to keep target audience engaged.

Now having to go up against another big star film, i think it would have crashed by saturday/sunday. It would not have made it to monday.

Lol. Disney was earlier always that it’s doing great business in India. They released Dangal and were very happy but still closed their shop in India. All will be fine till 1 day they say we’re shutting down business in India.

In Covid and theater lockdown, OTT is unable to break even, I don’t see how it will breakeven after theaters are opened and new movies are directly released on OTT.
