Naveen’s note on Laxmii

In the genre of horror comedy the best i have seen still remains Bhool Bhulaiya and most recently Stree.

I had also liked the tamil movie Kanchana which was a low budget good entertainer (timepass) despite shoddy screenplay.
Thats because Kanchana never had anytjing serious about itself. The characters, issues etc were all cartoonish so overall it worked.
To overcome those gaps in screenplay, significant and serious changes have been made in Laxmii. However the changes needed to be goofy in nature and not serious. This is where the movie goes wrong.

1. The muslim husband in a hindu family is introduced. The girls family has discarded them and they want to win them back. A serious subject but with the kind of humor that this film is about, it doesnt work. In fact it looks farcical and forced.
This fills in a serious lapse in the screenplay of the original but the attempt needed to be true to the goofiness of the characters. Smart and serious topics doesnt exist in such world.

2. Hero in Kanchana was afraid of ghosts. So all silliness despite bad acting still looked tolerable. Here Akshay is in the group that exposes fake babas and dhongis. And he is shown to do serious stuff like citing chemical names of products used by fakes. This is fine but the rest of the caricaturish nature of the film makes anything serious looks misplaced.

3. The scene at the house when Laxmii realises that she has been found and the sequences that follows doesnt work in Laxmii as good as it did in Kanchana. The scenes have been shortened and has been made dramatic with Akshay changing his getup for the 3 character. It did not work.

The last 30 minutes of the climax is true to original when things get serious about transgenders and soon you realise that this is a revenge movie.

Akshay Kumar looks thin, and hence old. His cheekbones have come out because of weight loss. His scenes are not well made. His effort shows but those are not enough.

Kiara is the only good thing i liked. She is the only sane person in the movie. She looks beautiful.

Unlike Kanchana, the performance and comradrie of mother in law and daughter in law doesnt work here in entirety. The actors end of shouting, shrieking and annoying. The family is educated and well off but look, talk and feel bucolic.

Overall, underwhelming.

Rating – 2/5

At boxoffice, it would have been average.

  1. Good review Naveen. You forgot to mention Sharad Khelkar who in 15 mins title role has stolen the movie from Akshay kumar fair and square!

    Like

    • Absolutely. Yes missed mentioning him.
Sharad kelkar has around 10 minutes of screen time but he explodes. His chracter is well written which touches your heart. Even in Kanchana the actor that played this role stole the show. Sharad surpasses him via his physicality and controlled aggression.

Akshay’s character is more layered but underbaked.

In the movie only Kiara stole the show for me. 😁

Agree, although Akshay clearly had all the aging visible, like crow’s feet near his eyelids, great tufts of grey chest hair, it was ignorable since he was physically agile (unlike our beloved Bhai) and there wasn’t much of a romantic track of a younger actress. Huma Qureshi, Nimrat Kaur, Kareena all looked pretty age appropriate next to him, but with Kiara, the difference is jarring and since there seems to be a larger romantic track, it’d be very annoying.

What surprised me most about this was that lot of people said that even Akshay wasn’t his usual self in comedy.

PS: Am I the only one who sees amusing parallels between Akshay Kumar and Kartik Aaryan? Naveen, you know who your children will worship next 🙂

Kartik Aaryan is a self confessed Akshay fan, adding to that, boy of middle class origins coming to Mumbai, has good looks, starred in critically trashed films that became hits, not a good actor but slowly improving, popular among ladies and stuck in constant gossip link-ups (though no one can beat Akki Baba on that score). The rest of the comparisons are, IMO, at best superficial. This one is solid.

Biggest risk taker is overstating it, when he’s acting in Sajid Khan scripts like Housefull 3 and 4.

Special 26 was Neeraj Pandey coming off A Wednesday with an unconventional sassy thriller that labored midway due to the burden of Akshay’s star persona (needless love story & songs). Baby was a desi Bond film that Pandey could have cast anyone, Airlift was Akshay at his underplaying best, Padman was a gamble that became a damp squib. Jolly LLB 2, good film but a safe bet. Not a risk. Toilet is a propaganda machinery while Gold, 2.0, HF4, Mission Mangal are poor films. Kesari, a safe bet that almost ended up being unsafe & just about avoided giving Akshay his version of Asoka, Mangal Pandey, Veer or Mohenjo Daro thanks to excellent cinematography & visuals along with Teri Mitti. A different matter that Tanhaji hammered Kesari to pulp in less than 10 months & made Kesari seem like a b grade period drama.

  7. Thanks for sharing Naveen, 2 things:

    1) Your rating of 2/5 matches mine.
    2) You liked the last 30 minutes which I did. Most didn’t like the 2nd half.

The reason why I really wanted to hear your review is because I think here you, krissh, me and couple others have same habits and likes in watching movies where we just want to have fun and enjoy. I was pretty confident that your rating will match mine.

One thing we disagree on is that I think this movie would have flopped if released against Radhe (not sure if you’ve changed your mind on it now). It would have hard time as a solo release, would have crashed on Monday. If had to go up against a big film, the crash would have come quicker.

      • It’s not about me being hopeful about Radhe, it’s about understanding that when there’s a choice, it reduces return for one or both product. I used to use this logic all the time with old folks here on boxoffice but most didn’t understand or didn’t wanted to for personal reasons.

If masala dosa is the only item you have on menu, than 100% of your customers will get masala dosa because that is the only item you have on menu.

Now, if you add pav bhaji to your menu too, that changes the equation. You have to believe that there will be some who will get pav bhaji.

Is it possible that all 100% gets masala dosa? Yes, but than it’s also possible that 100% gets masala dosa.

Laxamii with bad reviews against radhe with bad reviews, my money is on radhe based on salman star power which is way above akshay.

Now how do you equate that? Take salman biggest hit and bump it up against akshay biggest hit film, they’re not even in same league.

But from 2018, none of the three Khans have had a hit. Salman finally flopped even in his star making role of Chulbul Pandey. Unfortunately, Aamir had a bad time with Thugs and Zero depressed SRK so much that he still hasn’t made an announcement. Akshay has been rolling out hit after hit and slowly jumped from 130-140 to 190. The classic tortoise who is ahead of the Khan hares right now.

Sooryavanshi could have been his 300 crore moment. If both Prithviraj or Bachchan Pandey made even 130 crore each, it would have been extraordinary and put Akshay ahead of Salman in terms of his overall career and only behind Aamir.

Reduce it by 30 cr for a non holiday release.
Reduce it further by 15 cr with a class and real value would come.

Do a non holiday with a clash for Salman would get same collections as that for Akshay.

With same nett collection, Akshay’s films make more money. So a 125 cr nett for Akshay is more profitable than 150 cr nett for Salman for same production value.

Here Laxmii is like half of the cost of Radhe. So for a fair result Radhe has to do couble the business to be above par. This of course we know would not happen in any scenario.

We keep harping about SRK’s downfall, but I think Salman is going to have it much worse. The same narrative about Ra One, JTHJ, MNIK that they all crossed 100 crores, though it was clear to everyone that they were not living up to expectations. Now that we’re using the same excuses for Bhai shows how bad his fall is.

Ra.One is dissed hugely till this date, but for a 130 crore film with a flop director like Anubhav Sinha and terrible WOM, it managed to make 115 crore. Salman’s Bharat with a successful director made 197 crore on a 240 crore budget, despite not being as hated as Ra One was. As per Film Information, Ra One was a commission earner, Bharat?

There hasn’t been a single hit for Salman since 2017, and there’s the earlier big flop, Tubelight. These are all single releases, unlike JTHJ or Dilwale. After Reshma Shetty’s exit, he’s making all the wrong decisions.

Earlier, I remember reading something about how these generation stars are much more smart and canny than to embarrass themselves like Dev Anand, Manoj Kumar, Dharmendra. Seems like Salman is out to prove that wrong.

    • Akshay Kumar is all set to have as many as 8 films lined up for release belonging to different genres with promising names, which definitely gives him the chance to be the new number one star of Bollywood in 2021.

“Akshay has films like Sooryavanshi, Atrangi Re, Bell Bottom, Prithviraj and Raksha Bandhan up for release next year, with each film standing a potential of earning bare minimum Rs. 100 crore at the box-office. The least that these five films can collectively earn in the year is Rs. 500 crore, with films like Sooryavanshi and Prithviraj also standing a huge chance to enter the Rs. 200 crore club. Akshay is looking to contribute around Rs. 700 to 800 crores at the box-office next year, thereby emerging the most bankable name of Bollywood. Akshay’s best ever collections at the India box office has been Rs. 757 crores in the year 2019 with 4 releases” a trade source told Bollywood Hungama.

“From 2.0 till Housefull 4, Akshay is witnessing a dream run at the box-office. His last two underperformers were Padman and Gold, however ever since then, the numbers speak for themselves thereby cementing his position in the industry as guarantee Kumar of modern times. While he is close at second spot right now in 2020, just next to Salman, owing to Salman’s ability to open big at the box-office purely on the basis of his stardom, the tables stand a chance to turn next year. Salman has just Radhe and Antim gearing up for release in 2021. His last release, Dabangg 3 was also an underperformer, thereby putting him in a little vulnerable spot,” the source further shared, adding that bumper opening for both Radhe and Antim, irrespective of the total box-office collections will help Salman retain his number one spot next year as well.

“But it’s Akshay who is functioning like a mini-industry right now and the magnitude of films as also the credibility of names working with him, gives him the edge of emerging the winner next year given the potential of his releases to earn on paper as compared to his competitor.” While there is a close call between Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar for the top two spots, the rest of Bollywood is not even in competition with the two giants. While Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan are taking longer breaks and prefer staying away from the rat race of numbers, Shah Rukh Khan has not had a really good run at the box-office in the last 6 years. Ranveer Singh at the moment is the closest to the two seniors given his run at the box-office in last 2 years as also the potential of his upcoming releases like 83, Jayeshbhai Jordaar and Cirkus. Ajay too is on the front-foot post the historic success of Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior.

      • Look What Bollywood Hungama is saying. Absolutely ridiculous.
Akshay is already No 1. I can understand that few people take time to accept the change. But you have to be pragmatic and sensible if you put any other star except Akshay as No 1 if you are taking the time frame from 2017 onwards (2-3 years is usual comparison time).

Bollywood Hungama is projecting 800 Cr nett collection from Akshay Kumar for 2021 which is at least 300 Cr less than the optimistic scenario.

In 2019 nett collection for Akki was 800Cr+/ 1000Cr+ gross.

        Abki Baar
        1000 Cr Paar
        1000cr + nett / 1500 cr + gross

Bollywood Hungama is agreeing, though they are accepting reality late.
As i said the latency and inertia is the problem. These portals will keep Akshay also ahead for long due to same intertia/latency. I am agile

        • Saying Akshay is set to be No 1 in 2021 is like making him No 1 for the whole decade. This would not be correct if other stars esp Ranveer performs better which i see him in 2022.

          • Yes agree it works both ways.

You are confused though. Your list is more like the most consistent star list. But biggest star is definitely not Akshay. That’s the difference that you don’t get at all.

Its just that i am the iceberg in the titanic who first knew what happenned and you the the captain on Titanic who accepted last.
            Its all about timing.
Its like Someone said Amitabh became No 1 in 1976, while others agreed with him by 1979. When the writing is on the wall one need not wait to put it on portrait.

        Salman Khan – 2010 – 2017

        Akshay Kumar – 2017 – 2022 (expected)

        Ranveer – 2022 onwards (I think)

  8. Naveen, what’s your guess about box-office collection if it was release pre-covid?

    • Around 125 Cr nett on a holiday release. The makers did not put money in this. Looked more like a quick low budget, low margin aspiration.
Laxmii is lucky to have escaped with OTT release.

      • I think out of all Akki movies, Laxmii was perfect for OTT. I don’t see Suryavanshi or others on OTT, they are definitely big screen movies. Laxmii was long delayed project and inexpensive at that one. OTT was sureshot profit for Producers unlike theatrical release in these times.

      • I also feel Laxmi would have done 110 to 140 crs. I dont think it is as bad as it seems. I agree with Master they havent bettered original but i thought the second half was stronger.

        • It’s all conjecture. We’ve seen successes at Diwali like Golmaal and Housefull franchise – kids love the movies. Laxmii is not pitching at the same audience and is not a sequel at all.

  9. It doesnt matter how much Radhe or Antim makes. Salman will get another 300 cr blockbuster with Tiger 3 in 2022. Tiger 3 is likely to be the first 300 cr film in post covid times.

Akshay on the other hand will find it difficult to get 200 cr hits in 2021 due to covid. And he still hasnt bagged a big film yet, despite reaching his peak in 2019. But then Salman has Tiger 3, Srk has the Hirani film …
