@marcus – Mogul is hardly a script for Christmas release. This is more like a non holiday types or at most semi holiday release.

Also i will be surprised if Aamir takes long time to complete this. Its not worth. Hope its a quickie.

Don’t know what Aamir say in the script but it’s like any normal person becoming music industry number 1 producer. The template is not unique like say LSC.

        • Also, Gulshan kumar’s story is basically from age 30 to 41 when he died. Aamir will be around 57 by the time it release. He should produced it with someone like Rajkumar Rao and make it a great movie unless trying to make it an Aamir Khan movie.

        • @Naveen – You may have a point here, but you DO sound like a broken record when it comes to Aamir.

Personally, I not only have zero interest in this project, but I am actually against it. Its not about BO prospects – Sanju had shown that such films can be blockbusters. But I would rather watch a docu on any controversial tycoon, than a film directed/produced by family or friend (like Sanju or Mogul).

Moreover, when it comes to people like Hirani or Aamir who do v less films, i think its ridiculous to spend 2-4 years on subjects like a biopic of a controversial figure.

I also have no doubts that Aamir had reached his career peak between 2006-2016 and since then it has been a case of diminishing returns. He may get a hit or blockbuster here and there, but is unlikely to repeat his feats during that period of 10-11 years. Whatever goes up, has to come down.

Have been reading a lot of funny fanboy theories attempting to decipher Tenet on desi and global forums too. Can’t help but feel the whole point of the film is missed. Barring the fact the there are some beings in the future who have created this 9 point algorithm and sent it back to our present via Sator to destroy our present (their past) as we know it (as the rivers dried up & the oceans rose) and that there are our present beings attempting to save this civilization (each having a forward and inverted form of themselves) there’s nothing much to decipher. This is neither as intelligent as Inception, nor as spiritual as Interstellar & nor as edge of the seat as Dunkirk. Its loud, explosive popcorn entertainment stuff with a Bond like protagonist, an MI like Russian villain and a damsel in distress along with a loyal sidekick, all thrown into a never ending time dilation palindrome to save the planet.

As I said earlier, best watched on the IMAX screen with 4k resolution and dolby sound systems that makes it your true winter blockbuster experience. Any attempts to look too deep or sounding too smart about it are futile.

A $25M final total in China & underperformance in Japan is a disaster for WW84. These are markets that are running at near normal levels. Tenet did a handsome $66M in China in comparison. That for a movie with mixed reviews & not part of a franchise. Puts Nolan’s global popularity into perspective.

Both films were complete and ready for release for almost a year now and have been accruing interest for delay in release. The more Reliance waits, their costs increases proportionately and chances of loss making also increases …

  11. New mutation of virus now in UK. Travel bans are being imposed. This thing won’t go away ,2021 itself may well be a disaster.

    Like

    • Its in its last legs now with certain nations either on the cusp of natural herd immunity threshold or vaccinated immunity. Viral mutations are nothing new. Europe contained the first wave well enough with relatively few infections and hence a second major wave was an eventuality. Countries like India & Brazil never managed to contain the first wave & it spread widely which led to large scale immunity among large population (explains why India never had a spike post Diwali). Europe’s not gonna have any major spikes beyond this. Its gonna be under control by mid 2021 at max. Making sweeping statements for the whole of ’21 is a long shot.

      Like

      • Containing the first wave was something the US failed at too, and it’s now in a third wave. Pakistan too did no lockdown but is facing the worst. India and Brazil had their peaks recently, and the extended lag between waves is meant to ensure that the second wave can be contained by vaccines. IHME in september estimated that we’d have a mild second wave mostly up north after January. This mutation is worrying but I agree that mid 2021 is the best date.

And after Sweden, herd immunity turns me off even more.

        Like

        • Herd immunity is a reality, whether you like it or not. India’s first wave last almost 8 months which was long enough to have over half the population infected (mild and asymptomatic included). Various recent studies have shown immunity even in case of mild infections against this virus can be long lasting (the reason why countries that had a major SARS1 outbreak in 2002-03 have not had as huge as outbreak this time around). That’s perhaps the reason why India never had a major surge post Diwali. As for the US, i’m sure they’re mixing up flu and covid cases in the reports and that coupled with much larger testing base compared to India is obviously gonna have way higher cases for the record. But yes, India and South Asia’s CFR is way lower than Europe & NA perhaps thanks to lower average mean age and a tendency to adapt to pathogens and foreign bodies easier (considering the polluted environments most citizens in these countries live in, compared to Europe & the NA)

          https://www.news-medical.net/news/20201124/Mild-COVID-19-disease-may-trigger-long-term-immunity.aspx

          Like

        • Again, my point against herd immunity is a Government adopting it like strategy, as Sweden did. For a Nordic country, it totally lost control of the plot, it would have been horrible if that strategy was implemented in a country like ours. And Pakistan’s COVID cases are an exception to the theory being explained for India, why Pakistan, even Delhi had a surge. I frankly never expected a post Diwali surge, it was always January based on IHME (which is a good resource). I’ve read conflicting reports about immunity as well and how long it lasts.

My explanation is simply that our second wave is delayed because the lockdown delayed the peak of the first wave. Of course, it will be less fatal than the first time as this time, we have vaccines. That was pretty much the scientific basis of lockdowns, it will be over by summer 2021.

Saying the US is mixing up flu cases with covid is a fallacy which matters little after one sees the monumental stupidity of the population there. Even taking it to be true, the last year deaths due to flu were 22,000. Reported covid deaths there are 315,000. Still a huge death toll.

          Like

        • Delhi’s got a large migrant/floating population from neighbourhood states & regions. With free travel and open borders (coupled with Delhi’s comparatively higher testing) the surge is not surprising. High pollution/poor air quality too has a role to play in coagulation of viral particles as per some studies. Either ways, i do not expect a major second wave in India in Jan/Feb as i believe more than half the population has already been exposed to the pathogen. Minor fluctuations are possible though as a lot of people are still susceptible thanks to the population density.

        • Sweden’s strategy is a disaster. This thing needs early intervention not reactive policies. The west has failed a lot. Asian countries have done pretty well. But the propensity to reek havoc in countries like India is still there.

        • Sweden without lockdowns has the same CFR as some of the other European countries that imposed lockdowns. Both strategies have failed to be honest. Wearing masks and maintaining a 1 meter distance while going about your daily life (and of course focusing on the all important Vitamin Ds and Cs) is the only solution to this damn thing. The earlier we realize, the better.

        • To something scientifically unknown it is a dumb strategy to do nothing and act as if there is no virus. Sweden compared to other Nordic countries has failed.

In his speech Saturday, Boris Johnson suggested the variant “may be up to 70% more transmissible than the old variant” based on early analysis by the UK’s New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats (NERVTAG) advisory group. The data behind this figure has not yet been published and relies on computer modeling.

But other scientists suggest the increasing incidence in the UK may just be down to a confluence of circumstances — luck or chance — rather than changes in the viral genome.

“Any apparent increase in transmission now could equally be due to human behaviour during the Christmas period and the increase in movement and social contact associated with it,” says Raina MacIntyre, professor of global biosecurity at the University of New South Wales’ Kirby Institute.

In November, talk of a “particularly sneaky strain” in Adelaide, South Australia, sent the state into lockdown. A cluster of cases appeared to show the virus was spreading more quickly, but later evidence suggested it was not any more infectious or transmissible.

You have a diabetes (preexisting condition), I feed you 5 pounds of sugar (covid) and you die. You died because of preexisting condition of diabetes but more importantly, it’s because of 5 pounds of sugar (Covid).

Yes, someone with preexisting would have died anyway but with covid, it attacks and kills that person much faster.

All governments that took action did the ‘right’ thing. If you know little about a contagious virus, you have to be extremely cautious. Certainly some governments could have made better decisions but I would not really hold them culpable as this was an off the charts moment in recent history.

        Like

      • No one is asking you not to take anything seriously. But an unending cycle of lockdowns and unlocks with no clear end in sight would surely lead to economic, mental & psychological catastrophes (already has) that lead to deaths a lot higher in number than the pandemic itself. Add to that the fact that a lot of “non covid” ailments have hardly had any attention in the last 8 months with mortality from cancer, cardiac arrest etc spiking in the next half a decade due to lack of adequate healthcare facility. Your diabetic patient with 5 pounds of sugar would still lead to mortality, not due to covid but due to lack of timely attention for diabetes. Already the health ministry of India has officially claimed almost 30% TB cases went undetected due to the lockdown (many more to follow) and mortality from TB would increase by over 20% in the next 5 years thanks to the hyperbolic pandemic response. Covid’s NOT the only disease that kills. Especially with India’s deaths/million ratio of 105, its far below TBs and even general air pollution’s mortality (air pollution killed 17 lakh in 2019). Europe’s and US’ handling might be on a different trajectory but as far as India’s concerned, its high time we get back to the economics, job losses and non covid ailments simultaneously now.

  19. Coolie No.1 Looking A Decent Entertainer
    Box Office India Trade Network

Coolie No.1 is looking a decent entertainer which was sure to open well if it had a theatrical release on Christmas Day in a normal scenario but sadly its going to be a digital release due to theatrical business at a standstill due to the pandemic.

The film has faced negativity in the digital world but that has become par for the course since cinemas have been shut as negativity towards bigger films and bigger actors has to be shown to get views in the the digital world. This happened with Laxmii a month or so back but still the film found a huge audience on release. Its become a case of say something else but do something else. There has been a lack of films this year and that probably helped Laxmii get an audience and even some of the people who shout wont watch or boycott do end up watching as there is nothing really out there.

The film is a remake of the 1995 SUPERHIT film Coolie No. 1 which was much ridiculed at the time on release but the box office told a completely different story. Now the media which ridiculed the first Coolie No. 1 film calls its a classic to show the new Coolie No. 1 in a poor light. It is possible that Coolie No. 1 (2020) is not as good as Coolie No. 1 (1995) but its not as if one film is 10/10 and the other is 1/10. There is no doubt that Coolie No.1 (2020) will be ridiculed on release as well and the sad part is there is no box office this time to give the actual results.

The story of Coolie No, 1 (2020) may be similar to Coolie No. 1 (1995) but ooking at the trailer of Coolie No. 1 (2020) it looks more like Judwaa 2 (2017) with the main difference being that Judwaa 2 had a better look as that film was shot in UK. Judwaa 2 also had more HIT songs but Coolie No1 has also seen a HIT song with Husn Hai Suhana which has been a rarity in this dreadfull year.

Judwaa 2 had opened to 16 crore nett in 2017 and Coolie No. 1 may have opened 10-15% less than that film on a normal day due to look of the film being a bit weaker and Varun Dhawan coming off some non performing films. But if we take 25th December as the release date then the collections would go to the 20 crore nett plus mark due to the national holiday.

Coolie No. 1 has fetched a huge 115 crore for digital rights making it premium content for Amazon and by far the biggest product for them this year which obviously means numbers are expected and hopefully the huge expectations are met. Generally the content that is premiered on digital has very limited or sectional appeal but here its universal appeal and that is reflected in the price.

FYI, Judwaa was supposed to be with Govinda. It wasn’t some gangster but Sajid Nadiawala, who was Salman’s close friend and the producer who replaced Govinda half-way. Have you considered the fact that Salman was what helped Govinda sustain through the late 00s with multi-starrers like Partner and Salaam-e-Ishq? One can infer that Salman wanted to repay Govinda for Judwaa in some ways through this.

And also that at some point of time, perhaps with his mother’s death, Govinda had mental health problems and started acting very superstitious and arrogant on sets.

And Govinda makes it seem more like a friendly request which he accepted due to his close ties with Salman and his family. As I mentioned earlier, Govinda got back his favor with Partner and Salaam E Ishq (both films Salman recommended to him), that he couldn’t build on it is a different matter.

And what is this tendency to club all three Khans as a cartel? You make it seem as though all three are moral equivalents in some way.

  20. Wonder Woman (2017) itself did just 16 Cr net all India. In ideal circumstances about a 25 Cr total would be a good result for the sequel. And if we can get about 20-25 Cr total in this pandemic era, its an excellent result (just like Tenet doing 11-12 Cr against a baseline of Dunkirk’s 20)

    • Who cares about footfalls, ticket prices or occupancy percentages when the bottom-line is that with 10 cr nett collections Tenet has struggled to recover its distribution price in India. Its hardly a good result.

If Sooryavanshi released now it wud have done anywhere between 50-70 cr nett lifetime (depending on the film to be average or good) and wud have been a big loss-maker for Reliance.

Bollywood tentpoles are not going to release for sometime.

      • Footfalls and occupancy signify audience interest. You cannot have collections without audience interest and neither have you personally invested in these crony capitalist ventures of WB and Reliance who’re now wetting their pants at the thoughts of a release. Sooryavanshi can surely break even if these boisterous egos of these corporate czars and the so called big screen superstars are caressed and they decide to take a pay cut for a change to support the cinemas in this crisis. A 70 Cr net result is still better than waiting till eternity which is no one’s gain.

        • Be practical. These big budget films can never break even with low collections due to the pandemic. WW84 needs 400m worldwide to recover its 200m budget. Its not going to happen. Its going to be consecutive lossmaker for WB after Tenet.

        • Most of the Bollywood tentpoles end up being tentpoles because of the lead actor pocketing 1/3rd of the film’s total budget. Even now if Akshay, Katrina, Ranveer and Deepika decide to forfeit their remuneration for Sooryavanshi & 83 and bail out the distributors and exhibitors, both films can break even at 70-80 Cr all India without any substantial losses. Still a better deal for all parties concerned than an endless wait.

        • I don’t believe these actors ‘care’ this much at all! They will always make money even without theatrical business. The entire structure of Bollywood is shambolic. You got many sequels, remakes, biographies etc. being made and crores wasted on silly pointless songs shot in middle east and ‘superstars’ pocketing crores for 30 days work. At the end of the day the consumer is paying for hardly any entertainment!

        • Its a silly dream to think superstars will forfeit their crores. Not now at least. There first have to be enough casualties. If all the tentpoles flop in 2021 (IF they release in the first place!), then maybe the next set of tentpoles will have lower remuneration for the stars. But for that to happen there has to be absolute bloodbath at BO in 2021-22.

        • None of the star actors would have any value left if their films stop releasing on the big screen. OTT & TV audience is like the long grind audience that prefers content over entertainment. Most Bollywood stars (barring exceptions like Aamir) have made a career out of antics & entertainment (entry scenes, dialogs, dance moves etc) which have no value when watched on TV or the laptop. India’s big screen audience is not the kind that’s exposed to genuine big screen entertainment of the Nolan, Marvel/DC or Bond films. Its predominantly a mass audience which prefers antics & histrionics on celluloid. On digital or satellite tv, most of these stars with limited acting ability (who thrive on their big screen superstar aura) would be trumped by genuine character artists like Nawazuddin, Manoj Bajpayee, Ronit Roy & Rajkumar Rao. They better start caring about the big screen before its too late.

  21. My top 5 Disaster prediction for 2021 (for no strong reason, just getting bad vibe due to delays)-

    1. Lal Singh Chadda – This should not be made a holiday release. Subject is dry. Also it needed to be released just the way the original movie by Tom Hanks was done.

    2. Sooryavanshi – The wait is too long to the extent that now one has moved on. It’s like once upon a time this was to release.

    3. Radhey – This might make one to rethink why Salman makes movies. It will bomb big time.

    4. Brahmastra – Has been shot twice with different scripts. It will release with a huge deficit in the production cost.

    5. Maidaan – This will not be a disaster. It will just flop.

As usual, bogus rules lead to panicky outcomes. Imposing curfews and restrictions at a time when CFR, TPR and total cases have been on the downward spiral for over 3 months is ridiculous. Lockdowns have never worked, nor will they ever do. Self isolation when unwell, social distancing, appropriate & timely usage of masks and keeping your Vitamin C/D in check while functioning the system and society as normally as possible are the only solutions to this.

Wonder Woman 1984 has done well in paid previews on Wednesday. There wasn’t much publicity around the film’s early arrival at select theatres on restricted count of shows. Still, the film has done well enough to collect 1 crore* which is not a bad number at all.

In fact these are the kind of numbers that several films get on paid previews even on regular days and here the film has managed to do that in the COVID era where either audiences are still waiting for things to get better or are not even aware of an early arrival.

  25. Finally watched Tiger Zinda Hai and it is bad beyond even one’s wildest nightmares. Ali Abbas Zafar — unlike someone erstwhile here — might love masala but has ZERO understanding of masala. He beats to death, again, and again, and again, of the so-called ‘common’ emotions between India and Pakistan and Bhai’s unfettered love for India that it feels one has a 100 lizards scrawling all over your body. Speak in Hindi, listen to AIR, eat only Indian food even though you are staying in the Alps where one might or might not have the privilege of having a Ganesh Groceries or Patel Brothers to get the ingredients to cook kaali dal — it is never ending! It is such a cringe-worthy film that even the second-half of a film like REFUGEE where Shetty Saheb proclaims that Indian and Pakistan should unite and have the ‘nation’ named ‘Insaaniyat-stan’ looks and feels Einstein-esqe.

The action scenes are pathetic and they managed to get TOM STRUTHERS to screw up!

The ONLY scene, the only scene that’s worth watching is Kaif’s fantastically shot action sequence embedded in a song. It is truly imaginatively choreographed and Kaif rocks. Bhai looks horrific when he is bare-chested as though his man-boobs are ready to splash milk all over rather than bullets.

Always knew Ali Abbas Zafar was a hack of of movie-maker usurping masala of the yore; but by God, this movie reveals his inadequacies to the core.

Credit to Salman for sure if he dragged this movie to 300 crore.

    • TZH got one of the best release dates of the last 10 years , open weeks with several national holidays in its first 10 days.
In fact this had a release date better than War 2 which had 3 national holidays plus 2 weekends days in its first week.

      This matters by 50-60cr minimum.

Agree, assuming the film is good enough where the paying audience will pay to see it.

TZH released 12/22/2017 – 329 crore per BOI
Zero released 12/21/2018 – 88 crore per BOI

  26. Had the honor of watching this magnificent masterpiece on television for the second time in my life. If at all anything, its even better in the second viewing. Despite its black & white tone, every frame’s a painting and every painting tells a thousand tales of horror, misery & human sacrifice during the second world war. Crafted to perfection by the master Steven Spielberg with performances of a lifetime by Liam Neeson and Ben Kingsley, Schindler’s List is perhaps one of the greatest (if not the greatest) film ever to have been conceived, created and executed in the history of celluloid.

    • I wouldn’t perhaps put it as the greatest film but yes, this for hell is one movie that one has to watch before one’s death. The decision to go with black and white was purposeful as per my understanding. You can’t ‘color’ one of the worst pogroms – I use this CAREFULLY and not flippantly as is the wont with BJP baiters – known to human history. Besides the performances you mentioned, there is also the terrific villainous performance/turn from Ralph Fiennes who loves to take a piss in the morning and shoot at least 2 Jews. He was evil and propaganda personified.

Nobody knows when things will ‘look up’ as you say. So what? Unless you have a greater work, you can always jump in and contribute. In good times, all support; support is needed more in dark times.

      • Thanks An Jo. But there hardly seems to be much happening in order to share inputs/thoughts. I am expecting 2021 to be pretty bad and dark. There is some news that WW84 did well in Wednesday preview shows in India and that it may notch up as much as 10 cr over the extended holiday weekend. That will set it up for a 20 cr nett lifetime total in India, which shud be good in such times. But I doubt it will motivate big budget releases of Sooryavanshi or 83 to happen anytime soon. Instead we may see small and medium budget flicks lining up to collect 10-20 cr nett totals at BO, which shud be enuf for them to reach recovery.

Sooryavanshi, 83 and Radhe will probably try their luck around April-May. But I am not hopeful of BO collections to go much beyond the 100 cr nett mark by that time, which will hardly be enuf for any of these 3 films to recover their investments. There is bound to be some blood at BO in such times (as we are seeing with Tenet and WW84 worldwide) and these films are likely to burn their fingers.

If my conjecture is true, then this will further discourage producers from releasing big films in the coming months. And it will be probably be Oct-Dec timeline when we see other big films trying their luck. Not sure how the BO scenario will be at that point, but i think its likely that much awaited films like Pathan and LSC will be further postponed and wont release in 2021.
