So Aamir picks up a script rejected by Akshay (Mogul) and Hrithik picks up the script that Aamir rejects (Vikram Vedha). Last time Aamir picked up a script that Hrithik rejected (TOH) ended up being a disaster. It will be interesting to see the fate of Mogul and Vikram Vedha when both release in 2022.
LSC, Radhe, Sooryavanshi, This is 83 and RRR will all come in 2021. Expected to be the top 5 of the year as Ajay has already decided to release Bhuj-Pride of India on Hotstar. But yes, as expected they’ll all be in the July-Dec period.
Aamir strongly believed that Kapil Sharma would be perfect for Gulshan Kumar biopic but even he rejected the script. Even Varun Dhawan rejected the biopic. I agree with Aamir that Kapil Sharma would be refreshing as Gulshan Kumar. I don’t see Aamir in that role at all.
This is a piss-poor decision by Aamir of letting go Vikram Vedha. Nothing Aamir is doing is exciting. I am barely interested in LSC, a freaking 20 year old sentimental movie. For this to be as good as relevant in today’s India as RANG DE BASANTI was in 2006, it’s an uphill, difficult task. I already bloody well know the historical high and low points of Indian history from the 1900s. There is hardly anything interesting in Gulshan Kumar’s life except his affair with Paudwal and his entanglement with the underworld. His death is the only interesting thing about him [see how cynical I have become?]To like the films of the ilk of LSC, I really have to rediscover my child-hood which is difficult for me.
It is not that VIKRAM VEDHAA is a fantastic film. It is a good film and is gripping, at the best, and 80 percent of the movie’s content was already tackled more intelligently and stylishly by ROM’s AKS back in 2000 itself; the main difference being AKS tilted more toward super-natural stuff while VIKRAM VEDHAA utilized folk-lore/mythology as it core tool of story-telling. But Aamir, at his age, suited the role and he had a chance to explore Vijay Setupathi’s character. Setu is an unpredictable, effortless and too casual of an actor to be played by an actor who is dependent more on his looks and star-persona and tries a lot when acting. It will be very difficult for HR to enact this role unless he really makes a dramatic turn here — of course, aided by make-up as in SUPER 30 — and surprises us. [He has always been inept in playing negative characters; the DHOOM types of plastic villains where roles are written in his favor are the max ceiling that he can reach; we have seen how inept he is when playing grimy, soot-ridden characters like Amitabh’s in AGNEEPATH.]
Or might it be that the makers have decided to make the move more urbane and hence both SAK and HR? That would be surprising, given the fact that is being directed by the original duo I think.
They’d surely make it more urban with the Delhi/Mumbai audience in mind, hopefully they make it different too. HR surprised immensely in S30 and War was his bread butter. I guess this character might see shades of both avatars in a way. Saif is always more effective when pitted in a multistarrer and a good choice for the role. LSC would be a modern day classic, mark my words.
Yeah, Aamir seems to be struggling with his script selections post Dangal. Mogul is just the icing on the cake.
As for HR filling Vijay Sethupathi’s shoes, its an absurd choice. I guess the makers are desperate to have a star on board for the remake to happen. After SRK and Aamir both backed out, they will settle with any star willing to sign the dotted lines.
The worst part about Mogul is that it’ll be completely one-sided and shows Gulshan as some sort of messiah and god-fearing honest hardworking man who did everything good for music industry and somehow was brutally killed. If the family is producing, what else can you expect? It’ll be on the lines of Nawaz’s Thackeray, completely 1-sided and nothing of redeeming quality. Don’t see any reason for Aamir to act in such a film and especially he’s in wrong side of that role.

What Marcus, master and An Jo has said now, I have been saying the same thing about Aamir’s strange choices since last 6 months.
Mogul is absolutely the worst selection by Aamir and weakest script since last 20 years. Even Vikram vedha was not as close to what Aamir has done over the last 15 years. It is better than ToH or Dhoom 3 if that’s any consolation. But with Aamir doing one film in 2-3 years, the least i want is a PK level script.
Aamir’s strength is picking the script, working super hard for it and making the effort show.I absolutely love his approach till the first part of the sequence is right. If he picks an ordinary script then the effort given is not worth.
On Vikram Vedha.
Hrithik is not a good choice. Ajay Devgn would have been perfect, esp with the chemistry he shared with Saif. They both rock.
Aamir was also a very good choice.
Saif and Hrithik are actually same suave, soft spoken english medium hunks with limited range in diction and sensibility. Both of course surprise but by and large that’s their image.
ANyway…look at the past 6 months replies to all the warning bells i was sharing here and was called biased.
Wonder Woman 1984 saw decent business again on its first full day as it collected 1.50 crore nett taking its total to 2.25 crore nett. This 1.50 crore nett is the highest opening day till date for any film in India post the pandemic. The film made good ground in Tamil Nadu and Nizam Andhra as it opened outside the bigger multiplexes.
The night curfews in Maharashtra and Karnataka mean Mumbai city, Pune and Bangalore which are best for English films are not at their normal ratios. Delhi city is above Mumbai city which is not normally the case for an English film.
The film could show some growth on Saturday as it is a holiday but its unlikely to that huge holiday growth that was the norm before the pandemic. The collections of Wonder Woman 1984 are as follows.

Thursday – 1,50,00,000
TOTAL – 2,25,00,000
So 90L suddenly becomes 75 a day later. These guys give seriously absurd numbers. A 20 Cr total for a WW film is a good result in today’s times esp considering that the first did about 16 in 2017. It’d be interesting to see if Bond-No time to die sticks to its April date now. The movie fan in me surely hopes so as that’d gimme another reason to watch IMAX content after Tenet (planning to skip WW84 for now).
WW84 is looking at 7-8 cr nett extended weekend in India and perhaps 15-16 cr nett lifetime. It will do more than Tenet’s 11 cr total, but hardly enough to encourage Reliance to release Sooryavanshi or 83 anytime soon.
WW84s gonna do 20 Cr in India and frankly, I doubt anyone out here cares about Sooryavanshi or 83 anymore. I’m just happy about being able to catch Tenet twice on the big screen this month and am now hoping Bond 25 keeps its big screen date with April 2nd outside of the US. Movie exhibition in the US is doomed for the next 2 years while Europe’s gonna be topsy turvy (based on Tenet’s strong results). China, Japan, Aus/NZ are gonna be back to normal soon enough, India’s gonna have to wait till Bollywood and Tollywood producers and our big screen “stars” show some balls!
WW84 did $16.7M weekend in US, 85M total worldwide and around 8 cr nett in India. This will wind up with around $200M worldwide total and 16 cr nett in India. Dont know how much revenue will come from the couch potatoes, but this looks like a bigger loss-maker than Tenet.
China’s non performance is due to local releases that are dominating the domestic market (Tenet did really well out there). Europe’s been ravaged by the pandemic while during Tenet’s time the situation was under control. Its futile for India’s producers to draw conclusions from Hollywood films performance in Tier 1 cities as B & C centers might actually witness far better viewership compared to A centers (Covid’s predominantly been a very “urban” epidemic in India, part of the reason why its been hyped by the media as opposed to TB that kills more than twice the number in smaller towns and villages each year). That being said, the only way for tentpole films not to make substantial losses is for the leading stars to bail out the distributors for the post release losses. Even with the B & C centers coming on board I don’t see a 100 Cr grosser in the next 6 months at least.
Coolie No.1 Sets Records On OTT

Coolie No.1 has set new records for the Amazon prime in India with its opening on the platform. It is the first big premiere for Prime as they have had big films before like Bharat and War but these have come post a theatrical release while Coolie No.1 is the first big premiere.
The highest for the Amazon platform was some web series called Mirzapur 2 which released in 2020 but Coolie No.1 has surpassed this by a distance. This is expected as Coolie No1 is fetching a 100 crore plus price for just its 130 odd minutes of content while the web series could be 300 or even 400 minutes of content for a fraction of the price.
This itself shows the huge difference in value of the two for the platform. So on one side you are smashing records but on the other side the competition is not much as far as the platform is concerned. If we look at it in box office terms then on one side is a film with 100 crore nett potential and the other is an also ran type.
The best comparison for Coolie No.1 would be against Laxmii but here its two different platforms with Hotstar having a bigger base due to the IPL cricket. It is possible that Coolie No1 may come out with a similar type of number to Laxmii as a holiday release can compensate somewhat for the lower base of the platform. It also depends on whether Amazon Prime had the same growth as Hotstar in terms of subscription in the lockdown. Laxmii was released post the IPL and that would have pushed Hotstar subscription to the highest level for the year.
The year has been a disaster but its ended on a slightly better note with Coolie No. 1 scoring big on OTT and Wonder Woman 1984 putting up decent numbers in theatres while the numbers of Telugu film Solo Brathuke So Better are awaited and they are expected to be positive also.

Pukeworthy. Now I know many so-called cinema lovers, trade experts and Twitter users (some of them even belong here) call such films escapist fare and entertainment for the masses, but seriously, how much of such garbage would we have to endure before calling them truly terrible?
People like David need to know where to draw the line. Because even when you watch it after leaving your brains at home, there are high chances you will be left wondering how such cinema continues to be made, forget accepted in today’s day n age.

At a time when the exhibition sector needs a bailout, here we have certain shameless narcissists looting 65% of the film’s production budget thereby making sure the break even point escalates up to over INR 200 Cr. Shameless.. absolutely shameless! This applies to 90% of the industry “stars” (before a certain fanatic pounces on me).
Like sensex and markets all over…most are assuming that opportunities and income would increase once pandemic is over. In view of this all are estimating higher numbers.
I think the above article has completely missed the point that most actors including Akshay is joining on board as producer and is not demanding upfront fee at all. They are only working on profit share which ranges from 20-30%.
So the title should have been that his demand has increased from x% of profit to x+5% of profit.
Despite the pioneering mov(i)e, writer-director Vikramaditya Motwane, who makes weird cinema and is the foremost follower and sycophant of his mentor Anurag Kashyap (writer-director-producer and also actor) manages only a weird concoction of fictional drama with the lives and philosophies of both Kapoor and Kashyap. The narration is so wannabe global that it has many followers and critics singing hosannas, but for me, the film is nothing more than an over-long exercise in pampering both their egos, one supremely undeserved. And you don’t have to be a genius to know which!
Kashyap (also the dialogues writer here) and Motwane go the whole hog: everything that the enfant terrible among filmmakers has been called or accused of is blazed in other than his alleged penchant for womanizing. Kapoor (with ironic correctness and accuracy) calls him a man who nobody (as in the ticket-buying masses) really cares or connects with, who makes films that do not do any significant business, and who thrives on dark cinema and so on. Names that are associated with the Kashyap kind of cinema abroad (where movie-watching is different) are dropped like there is no tomorrow.
This is Kashyap’s back-handed “tribute” to himself and his brand of cinema. And ironically, Kapoor even tells him that he is no “Vishal Bhardwaj,” another name like Kashyap who has confessed in public at an international festival that none of his movies, including those promoted as successes or hits, have actually made money.
Everything that Kashyap is said to believe in (directors are stars everywhere, except in India, he says) is thrust down the hapless viewer, who is bewildered by this wannabe noir cinema full of expletives and excessive blood. A long five minute sequence sees the F word used at least 12 times! A facetious sequence shown at Kapoor’s house on his birthday, some ego-pampering by his weird son and Kashyap admirer Harshvardhan and a constant see-sawing between real and reel fill up the film once the “plot” takes off. We have over-large fonts stating “10 Hours to Sunrise,” “3 Hours to Sunrise” and so on.
An extremely biased article. The writer doesn’t even know what he didn’t like about the film. No mention of technicalities, storyline, acting or the meta experiment that it was?
You have to be a utter fool to believe this is Kashyap’s ego trip when he has taken a dig at himself and his brand of cinema several times in the film. Takes courage and a sense of humour to laugh at yourself in a country where people getting offended every minute of the day for no rhyme or reason.

The genuine middle of the road quality film makers like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and today’s Shoojit Sircar or Sriram Raghavan are few & far between.
Kashyap might be far more niche than the names you mentioned, but it would be unfair to call them preposterous. You are propagating an idea that entails the death of creativity. By that logic, artistes should never be allowed to experiment ever with different cinema and the Cannes and Berlin Film Festivals and MAMI back home are a bloody sham. These institutions should be shut down for ever where extremely unique films from all over the world compete for space. One should make only crowd pleasing movies that mint money to satisfy one and all. What’s the point of even having a cinema discussion forum then?
Also, do watch the complete video that Rocky shared. He has dissed the film over use of F words, and prefers people like Farah Khan and Sajid Khan who connect with the audience.
Never denied the video’s lack of credibility. Nor am I interested in watching it because I know its a senseless rant. My opinions on Kashyap are of course my personal views, I hope he as well as Shetty and everyone else passionate about their brand of cinema make a 100 films if possible.

I understand Kashyap can be a polarising figure, but his legacy and impact on Indian Cinema is undeniable. Although his films have been one flop after another, they’ve attracted considerable international stature and repute. More than the films, it’s the talent he’s recognized and brought onto the scene that is incredible. That list would be Amit Trivedi, Ritesh Batra, Nawazuddin, Huma Qureshi, Richa Chadda, Vineet Kumar Singh, Aarti Bajaj, Mahie Gill, Kalki Koechlin, Motwane, Varun Grover, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Neeraj Ghaywan, Vicky Kaushal and one can go on and on.’

While it is great he is still being considered — though it might be fatherly or father-in-law roles at least for the Barjatya film, he really should take it slow now. He shouldn’t blot his filmography with worthless films. The blots already began in the 1980s king of junk Manmohan Desai films like Mard and Ganga Jamuna Saraswati and there’ve been dozens since (none as bad as Aaarghhh.. RGV Ki AAG). It doesn’t matter what he does now. A good one is a positive but a disaster doesn’t make a difference.
No but that’s different. When you are reaching 50, each and every actor in India has suffered when at that age — except Aamir and Hassan [Hassan too suffered initially] — caught between the devil and the deep sea. And there were hardly any directors who would know how to utilize his talent at that age of on the wrong side of 40. The Khans, in that aspect, are extremely lucky. They have new-age directors as well as not-so-new-age like Hirani whom they can approach.
I am talking about his second innings. Now, I feel he should only go for films with Sircar, Sujoy, Santoshi, Raghavan, etc., etc.
@AnJo – I dont think AB needs to be choosy about scripts at this stage of his career. His successful second innings has been due to his personality and acting; not due to quality of his films. He should continue acting as long as he chooses to do, which is not a trivial thing to do at his age.

Best Indian Movies of 2020:- This year has been a disaster for our Film Industry as cinemas across the nation were shut down due to Covid-19 for over eight-months. Anyways, Zee has paid a lot of money to acquire Radhe and will probably find it v difficult to recover such a huge investment in Covid times. On the other hand, Salman has made big table profits (as it was for his previous recent underperformers).
@Shivaay – U talk about actors cutting their fees and profits in pandemic times to facilitate exhibition of films in theaters. And here we have Akshay demanding more of the profits pie and Salman selling his stale film at astronomical prices.
Unfortunate story of our rogue celebrities, Zee’s however sold Radhe at INR 60 Cr worldwide and gone big with the digital release (no idea if they’d choose simultaneous release). If simultaneous theatrical and digital release becomes a long term norm, its only the large canvas and magnum opus brand of cinema that’ll find theatrical takers which pretty much means the death of single screens as well as most of Bollywood’s masala movie factory (as most large large canvas films in Hindi cinema are junk with poor word of mouth). Ideal setting for a Hollywood takeover of the urban multiplex chains across India as most folks would rather watch a Marvel, DC, Disney, Bond or Nolan movie on the IMAX than spend their buck on Sooryavanshi & Radhe if the same are available on PVOD or digital.
As per BOI, Zee has pegged digital and PVOD rights at 130 cr which is more than double the worldwide theatrical distribution rights of 60 cr. I am sure Zee will go for a simultaneous PVOD to increase its subscription base and recover some of that absurd amount of 130 cr.

Provided it releases on Eid, I am not sure if Radhe can recover its 60 cr theatrical distribution price. It will need minimum 100 cr nett to do that and it will face competition from its own simultaneous PVOD release as well as from Black Widow and Satyamev Jayate 2.

I doubt such a volatile strategy would stand the test of time for tentpole films, although for small and medium budget movies it might be the way forward. Eventually I doubt anyone whose in sound state of mind and not a lazy slob would wanna watch a big screen entertainer in home viewing (unless they can afford 80 inch OLED TVs with woofer systems, even that has its limits). Even till last year films released online within 2-3 months of theatrical release yet theaters still had a substantial audience. Exhibitors and multiplexes themselves would re-strategize in the eventuality of simultaneous release platforms and in a way that might even lead to pocket friendlier and a more wholesome movie viewing experience even in the theaters. Only time will tell.

The year has been a disaster due to the pandemic as it saw just one HIT film with Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior. This is the worst return ever with the previous worst being 2002 which saw 4 HITS (Raaz, Devdas, Saathiya and Ek Chhotisi Love Story). Obviously 2002 was bad because many films did not work while 2020 was an enforced bad year due to covid.
There were films that found an audience when theatres were shut but whether these were Average, Hit or Super Hit that is impossible to tell as there was no box office. So for these films all we can label them is with success tag which means the year saw one blockbuster and a handful of successes.
BLOCKBUSTER
Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior released in January scored heavily at the box office and also recorded very good numbers on satellite. No doubt the results would have been very good on digital as well. The film created history in Maharashta by grossing over 100 crore nett in the state becoming only the second film to do so after Bahubali – The Conclusion. The film is not just the biggest HIT in Maharashtra this year but one of the biggest of all times. In Mumbai circuit (which includes Gujarat) the film did 143 crore nett while films like PK, Dangal and Ek Tha Tiger stand at around 103-104 crore nett.
SUCCESSES
Baaghi 3 was released in March and had a seven day run across India and then another 3-4 days in some circuits as the pandemic hit and cinemas start to shut down. The film grossed 92 cr with most of that coming in week one but even here the collections would have been affected by covid as talk of lockdowns had started. The film proved to the biggest HIT on television of 2020 beating Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior which confirmed that the film would have easily done higher numbers if it was released earlier in the year rather than March
Dil Bechara saw a digital release on Disney Hotsar in July and scored with record numbers at that time as it hit 22 lakh concurrent views on release. The film found an audience as it released after the death of the lead actor of the film Sushant Singh Rajput and the death was news at that time. The film would probably have not done well was it not for the death as a few months later the film fared very badly on satellite when the death was not main news. But the fact is on release it found an audience for whatever reason and that qualifies for some sort of success.
Laxmii saw a digital release on Disney Hotstar in November and smashed all digital records outside cricket as it recorded 37 lakh concurrenet views on release. The film had seen huge negativity since the trailer released but this did not stop the audience turning up in huge numbers to watch the film. The film would have seen very good numbers in the Maharashtra / Gujarat belt especially if it had a normal theatrical release on Diwali. North may have been a different story as there it would be depending just on Akshay Kumar star presence as the content would have held little appeal there.
Coolie No. 1 saw a digital release on Amazon Prime and became the top show on Amazon on Christmas. The concurrent views on release are not known but a fair bet could be in the 30 lakh region. The film though was watched in a record 3500 plus cities across India which is a record. Although Amazon is second to Hotstar in terms of subscribers it may have a wider reach with subscription in more cities due to more regional content which has led to the huge reach of Coolie No1. Again like Laxmii this film saw huge negativity but still it found a huge audience to emerge a success. The film also fared well Overseas as far as Indian content goes on Amazon prime but Overseas is all about face value and this would be the first time that Amazon premiered anything with face value for the NRI diaspora.
BELOW AVERAGE (These cant be called successes but are also probably cant be called FLOPS especially in such a bad year)
Malang released in February and grossed a fair 58 crore nett. Sattellite was not too good though.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan released in February grossed a fair 59 crore nett and saw mediocre results on television.
Khuda Haafiz released in August on Disney Hotsar and saw decent results of 10 lakh plus concurrent views on release.
The year saw a lot of negativity for the film industry in the digital world but the actual audience is very smart and will watch what they want irrespective of what is being said. People can praise things by words into the skies but still no audience and others can be trashed like anything but the paying public will still watch if they really want to.
So Tenet’s officially crossed INR 12 Cr net in India now (60% of Dunkirk’s domestic collection despite 50% occupancy and lower ticket prices) while WW84 struggles to INR 10 Cr net at the end of week 1. WW84 indeed seems to be carrying negative word of mouth across the globe (collections are disastrous in China and Pacific where Tenet did extremely well), yet another misfire from DC universe that’s struggled to offer much beyond the intriguing and exceptional Batman-Joker films.
Can’t add anything more as it’s a lot to take it, both experience and plot-wise, but even if you’re the dumbest viewer possible, there are enough extraordinary moments to keep you hooked without wanting to take a break.
Especially when watched on the imax screen with surround sound systems, just the format its made for. Although no denying the fact that extremely convoluted narrating & jarring sound effects did make it hard to grasp at times, yet an astonishingly well made film despite its flaws.
If Salman’s got a semblance of professional etiquette, respect for his profession as an artist & gratitude for his fanbase, he’d perhaps realize whatever he is today is because of celluloid & the big screen. Its easy to stand for something when the going is rosy however its tough times like these that require an element of respect & gratitude from the performers, film makers as well as us audiences who’ve spent our childhood relishing cinema on the big screen. Which is the exact reason why all big one’s like Sooryavanshi, Radhe & 83 gotta come in cinemas even if it means making losses. Coming on OTT would also mean the end of the so called superstars careers as none of their fans or neutral audiences are interested in watching masala films on a mobile screen or a laptop, the medium just doesn’t match.

Hundred per cent occupancy in movie theatres cannot be allowed yet, the Union home ministry told Tamil Nadu today. THE AIADMK government of the state, which lifted the restrictions on movie theatres last week, was told to scrap its order making that allowance.
The Union home ministry has so far allowed 50 per cent occupancy in movie theatres outside containment zones as part of the phased unlock process.
Giving that reminder to the state, a letter from the Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla said the Home Ministry has extended those guidelines till January 31.
“State/UT governments shall not dilute these guidelines… in any manner and shall strictly enforce the same,” the letter read, pointing to the ministry guidelines.

Gunjan Saxena – The Kargil Girl which also released in August on Netflix in had mediocre results on satellite as it recorded 31.5 lakh impressions on release. This is 42% less than Khuda Haafiz. Although its actually better than Dil Bechara but thats not saying much as Dil Bechara was not much of a film and its OTT success was mainly as the release was post the death of its lead actor Sushant Singh Rajput. The numbers of Gunjan Saxena – The Kargil Girl on satellite means its pretty much lights out for the film in the long run.
The biggest BLOCKBUSTER ever in Indian cinema SHOLAY (1975) again showed the force it is still today as it racked up almost 45 lakh impressions. This is 45 years after release and the audience still cant get enough of the epic. Its the greatest example of critics mouth saying one thing and the paying public doing exactly the opposite. The pocket never lies but words coming out of mouths of critics are usually lack of knowledge on films or lies and there is no bigger proof of that than Sholay.
Unlike the episode with Bhumi Pednekar which was full of lust scenes, this one with a somewhat a similar storyline is clean and can be watched with family without being uncomfortable.

The Tamil film Master due to release on 13th January has seen a huge demand for tickets across Tamil Nadu. The way plans are filling up you would assume there is no pandemic and it seems that every ticket available will be sold by the time the film releases as demand outstrips supply due to 50% capacity restrictions. In reality this may not be the case as its near impossible to sell every ticket but its going to be pretty close which is phenomenal.
The advance is also super strong in Bangalore and Hyderabad with the original Tamil version being superstrong in both cities and even the Telugu version getting a very strong advance in Hyderabad. The Tamil version has also seen a good response in some properties in Mumbai and Delhi. These are properties around educational institutes which probably have many students from Tamil Nadu. Still its the best advance these properties will have seen post the reopenng of cinemas.
The Hindi version of the film named Vijay The Master will see a release on the 14th January and here the advance is lacklustre which is expected. Still the film has a big release and there should be enough of a crowd on day one to ensure it is also the best opening in the Hindi belts post Covid19.
The box office is going to back for sure in a huge way in Tamil Nadu on the 13th and Andhra Pradesh has seen solid responses with a couple of films and while Vijay The Master should push the Hindi markets to higher levels it will still be a waiting game for one of the audience friendly biggies like Sooryavanshi or Radhe. Seeing the response to Master shows that cinema is cinema and irreplaceable where success can be felt (lets say initial success here) while all the OTT premieres come and go like a theatrical flop even if they find an audience.

So Aamir picks up a script rejected by Akshay (Mogul) and Hrithik picks up the script that Aamir rejects (Vikram Vedha). Last time Aamir picked up a script that Hrithik rejected (TOH) ended up being a disaster. It will be interesting to see the fate of Mogul and Vikram Vedha when both release in 2022.

LSC, Radhe, Sooryavanshi, This is 83 and RRR will all come in 2021. Expected to be the top 5 of the year as Ajay has already decided to release Bhuj-Pride of India on Hotstar. But yes, as expected they’ll all be in the July-Dec period.

Aamir strongly believed that Kapil Sharma would be perfect for Gulshan Kumar biopic but even he rejected the script. Even Varun Dhawan rejected the biopic. I agree with Aamir that Kapil Sharma would be refreshing as Gulshan Kumar. I don’t see Aamir in that role at all.

This is a piss-poor decision by Aamir of letting go Vikram Vedha. Nothing Aamir is doing is exciting. I am barely interested in LSC, a freaking 20 year old sentimental movie. For this to be as good as relevant in today’s India as RANG DE BASANTI was in 2006, it’s an uphill, difficult task. I already bloody well know the historical high and low points of Indian history from the 1900s. There is hardly anything interesting in Gulshan Kumar’s life except his affair with Paudwal and his entanglement with the underworld. His death is the only interesting thing about him [see how cynical I have become?]To like the films of the ilk of LSC, I really have to rediscover my child-hood which is difficult for me.
It is not that VIKRAM VEDHAA is a fantastic film. It is a good film and is gripping, at the best, and 80 percent of the movie’s content was already tackled more intelligently and stylishly by ROM’s AKS back in 2000 itself; the main difference being AKS tilted more toward super-natural stuff while VIKRAM VEDHAA utilized folk-lore/mythology as it core tool of story-telling. But Aamir, at his age, suited the role and he had a chance to explore Vijay Setupathi’s character. Setu is an unpredictable, effortless and too casual of an actor to be played by an actor who is dependent more on his looks and star-persona and tries a lot when acting. It will be very difficult for HR to enact this role unless he really makes a dramatic turn here — of course, aided by make-up as in SUPER 30 — and surprises us. [He has always been inept in playing negative characters; the DHOOM types of plastic villains where roles are written in his favor are the max ceiling that he can reach; we have seen how inept he is when playing grimy, soot-ridden characters like Amitabh’s in AGNEEPATH.]
Or might it be that the makers have decided to make the move more urbane and hence both SAK and HR? That would be surprising, given the fact that is being directed by the original duo I think.

They’d surely make it more urban with the Delhi/Mumbai audience in mind, hopefully they make it different too. HR surprised immensely in S30 and War was his bread butter. I guess this character might see shades of both avatars in a way. Saif is always more effective when pitted in a multistarrer and a good choice for the role. LSC would be a modern day classic, mark my words.

Yeah, Aamir seems to be struggling with his script selections post Dangal. Mogul is just the icing on the cake.
As for HR filling Vijay Sethupathi’s shoes, its an absurd choice. I guess the makers are desperate to have a star on board for the remake to happen. After SRK and Aamir both backed out, they will settle with any star willing to sign the dotted lines.

The worst part about Mogul is that it’ll be completely one-sided and shows Gulshan as some sort of messiah and god-fearing honest hardworking man who did everything good for music industry and somehow was brutally killed. If the family is producing, what else can you expect? It’ll be on the lines of Nawaz’s Thackeray, completely 1-sided and nothing of redeeming quality. Don’t see any reason for Aamir to act in such a film and especially he’s in wrong side of that role.

What Marcus, master and An Jo has said now, I have been saying the same thing about Aamir’s strange choices since last 6 months.
Mogul is absolutely the worst selection by Aamir and weakest script since last 20 years. Even Vikram vedha was not as close to what Aamir has done over the last 15 years. It is better than ToH or Dhoom 3 if that’s any consolation. But with Aamir doing one film in 2-3 years, the least i want is a PK level script.
Aamir’s strength is picking the script, working super hard for it and making the effort show.I absolutely love his approach till the first part of the sequence is right. If he picks an ordinary script then the effort given is not worth.
On Vikram Vedha.
Hrithik is not a good choice. Ajay Devgn would have been perfect, esp with the chemistry he shared with Saif. They both rock.
Aamir was also a very good choice.
Saif and Hrithik are actually same suave, soft spoken english medium hunks with limited range in diction and sensibility. Both of course surprise but by and large that’s their image.
ANyway…look at the past 6 months replies to all the warning bells i was sharing here and was called biased.

Wonder Woman 1984 saw decent business again on its first full day as it collected 1.50 crore nett taking its total to 2.25 crore nett. This 1.50 crore nett is the highest opening day till date for any film in India post the pandemic. The film made good ground in Tamil Nadu and Nizam Andhra as it opened outside the bigger multiplexes.
The night curfews in Maharashtra and Karnataka mean Mumbai city, Pune and Bangalore which are best for English films are not at their normal ratios. Delhi city is above Mumbai city which is not normally the case for an English film.
The film could show some growth on Saturday as it is a holiday but its unlikely to that huge holiday growth that was the norm before the pandemic. The collections of Wonder Woman 1984 are as follows.
Previews – 75,00,000
Thursday – 1,50,00,000
TOTAL – 2,25,00,000

So 90L suddenly becomes 75 a day later. These guys give seriously absurd numbers. A 20 Cr total for a WW film is a good result in today’s times esp considering that the first did about 16 in 2017. It’d be interesting to see if Bond-No time to die sticks to its April date now. The movie fan in me surely hopes so as that’d gimme another reason to watch IMAX content after Tenet (planning to skip WW84 for now).

WW84 is looking at 7-8 cr nett extended weekend in India and perhaps 15-16 cr nett lifetime. It will do more than Tenet’s 11 cr total, but hardly enough to encourage Reliance to release Sooryavanshi or 83 anytime soon.

I’m just happy about being able to catch Tenet twice on the big screen this month and am now hoping Bond 25 keeps its big screen date with April 2nd outside of the US. Movie exhibition in the US is doomed for the next 2 years while Europe’s gonna be topsy turvy (based on Tenet’s strong results). China, Japan, Aus/NZ are gonna be back to normal soon enough, India’s gonna have to wait till Bollywood and Tollywood producers and our big screen “stars” show some balls!

WW84 did $16.7M weekend in US, 85M total worldwide and around 8 cr nett in India. This will wind up with around $200M worldwide total and 16 cr nett in India. Dont know how much revenue will come from the couch potatoes, but this looks like a bigger loss-maker than Tenet.

China’s non performance is due to local releases that are dominating the domestic market (Tenet did really well out there). Europe’s been ravaged by the pandemic while during Tenet’s time the situation was under control. Its futile for India’s producers to draw conclusions from Hollywood films performance in Tier 1 cities as B & C centers might actually witness far better viewership compared to A centers (Covid’s predominantly been a very “urban” epidemic in India, part of the reason why its been hyped by the media as opposed to TB that kills more than twice the number in smaller towns and villages each year). That being said, the only way for tentpole films not to make substantial losses is for the leading stars to bail out the distributors for the post release losses. Even with the B & C centers coming on board I don’t see a 100 Cr grosser in the next 6 months at least.

Coolie No.1 Sets Records On OTT

Coolie No.1 has set new records for the Amazon prime in India with its opening on the platform. It is the first big premiere for Prime as they have had big films before like Bharat and War but these have come post a theatrical release while Coolie No.1 is the first big premiere.
The highest for the Amazon platform was some web series called Mirzapur 2 which released in 2020 but Coolie No.1 has surpassed this by a distance. This is expected as Coolie No1 is fetching a 100 crore plus price for just its 130 odd minutes of content while the web series could be 300 or even 400 minutes of content for a fraction of the price.
This itself shows the huge difference in value of the two for the platform. So on one side you are smashing records but on the other side the competition is not much as far as the platform is concerned. If we look at it in box office terms then on one side is a film with 100 crore nett potential and the other is an also ran type.
The best comparison for Coolie No.1 would be against Laxmii but here its two different platforms with Hotstar having a bigger base due to the IPL cricket. It is possible that Coolie No1 may come out with a similar type of number to Laxmii as a holiday release can compensate somewhat for the lower base of the platform. It also depends on whether Amazon Prime had the same growth as Hotstar in terms of subscription in the lockdown. Laxmii was released post the IPL and that would have pushed Hotstar subscription to the highest level for the year.
The year has been a disaster but its ended on a slightly better note with Coolie No. 1 scoring big on OTT and Wonder Woman 1984 putting up decent numbers in theatres while the numbers of Telugu film Solo Brathuke So Better are awaited and they are expected to be positive also.

Pukeworthy. Now I know many so-called cinema lovers, trade experts and Twitter users (some of them even belong here) call such films escapist fare and entertainment for the masses, but seriously, how much of such garbage would we have to endure before calling them truly terrible?
People like David need to know where to draw the line. Because even when you watch it after leaving your brains at home, there are high chances you will be left wondering how such cinema continues to be made, forget accepted in today’s day n age.
Sara Ali Khan: Good grief, now I have seen some terrible acting from non actors over the years, but she seems to have no clue what she is supposed to do in front of the camera.

I think the above article has completely missed the point that most actors including Akshay is joining on board as producer and is not demanding upfront fee at all. They are only working on profit share which ranges from 20-30%.
So the title should have been that his demand has increased from x% of profit to x+5% of profit.

Despite the pioneering mov(i)e, writer-director Vikramaditya Motwane, who makes weird cinema and is the foremost follower and sycophant of his mentor Anurag Kashyap (writer-director-producer and also actor) manages only a weird concoction of fictional drama with the lives and philosophies of both Kapoor and Kashyap. The narration is so wannabe global that it has many followers and critics singing hosannas, but for me, the film is nothing more than an over-long exercise in pampering both their egos, one supremely undeserved. And you don’t have to be a genius to know which!
Kashyap (also the dialogues writer here) and Motwane go the whole hog: everything that the enfant terrible among filmmakers has been called or accused of is blazed in other than his alleged penchant for womanizing. Kapoor (with ironic correctness and accuracy) calls him a man who nobody (as in the ticket-buying masses) really cares or connects with, who makes films that do not do any significant business, and who thrives on dark cinema and so on. Names that are associated with the Kashyap kind of cinema abroad (where movie-watching is different) are dropped like there is no tomorrow.
This is Kashyap’s back-handed “tribute” to himself and his brand of cinema. And ironically, Kapoor even tells him that he is no “Vishal Bhardwaj,” another name like Kashyap who has confessed in public at an international festival that none of his movies, including those promoted as successes or hits, have actually made money.
Everything that Kashyap is said to believe in (directors are stars everywhere, except in India, he says) is thrust down the hapless viewer, who is bewildered by this wannabe noir cinema full of expletives and excessive blood. A long five minute sequence sees the F word used at least 12 times! A facetious sequence shown at Kapoor’s house on his birthday, some ego-pampering by his weird son and Kashyap admirer Harshvardhan and a constant see-sawing between real and reel fill up the film once the “plot” takes off. We have over-large fonts stating “10 Hours to Sunrise,” “3 Hours to Sunrise” and so on.

Kashyap’s films are as pretentious as Shetty’s are preposterous. So yeah, they surely are 2 sides of the same coin in my books. Not that this is Bollywood’s first. Pretentious Shekhar Kapur’s have always been an anti thesis to preposterous Manmohan Desai’s. The genuine middle of the road quality film makers like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and today’s Shoojit Sircar or Sriram Raghavan are few & far between.

Kashyap might be far more niche than the names you mentioned, but it would be unfair to call them preposterous. You are propagating an idea that entails the death of creativity. By that logic, artistes should never be allowed to experiment ever with different cinema and the Cannes and Berlin Film Festivals and MAMI back home are a bloody sham. These institutions should be shut down for ever where extremely unique films from all over the world compete for space. One should make only crowd pleasing movies that mint money to satisfy one and all. What’s the point of even having a cinema discussion forum then?
Also, do watch the complete video that Rocky shared. He has dissed the film over use of F words, and prefers people like Farah Khan and Sajid Khan who connect with the audience.

I understand Kashyap can be a polarising figure, but his legacy and impact on Indian Cinema is undeniable. Although his films have been one flop after another, they’ve attracted considerable international stature and repute. More than the films, it’s the talent he’s recognized and brought onto the scene that is incredible. That list would be Amit Trivedi, Ritesh Batra, Nawazuddin, Huma Qureshi, Richa Chadda, Vineet Kumar Singh, Aarti Bajaj, Mahie Gill, Kalki Koechlin, Motwane, Varun Grover, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Neeraj Ghaywan, Vicky Kaushal and one can go on and on.’

While it is great he is still being considered — though it might be fatherly or father-in-law roles at least for the Barjatya film, he really should take it slow now. He shouldn’t blot his filmography with worthless films. Already he has given enough prestige to worthless film by appearing in them; of course, for his pay-check and I will be forever pissed off with him. But that’s his business.
Only the Vikas Behl sounds interesting since it includes the likes of Neena Gupta.
He has had one of the greatest come-back post-60 which NO other actor in India has had. Nothing more needed to prove.

When you are reaching 50, each and every actor in India has suffered when at that age — except Aamir and Hassan [Hassan too suffered initially] — caught between the devil and the deep sea. And there were hardly any directors who would know how to utilize his talent at that age of on the wrong side of 40. The Khans, in that aspect, are extremely lucky. They have new-age directors as well as not-so-new-age like Hirani whom they can approach.
I am talking about his second innings. Now, I feel he should only go for films with Sircar, Sujoy, Santoshi, Raghavan, etc., etc.

Unfortunate story of our rogue celebrities, Zee’s however sold Radhe at INR 60 Cr worldwide and gone big with the digital release (no idea if they’d choose simultaneous release). If simultaneous theatrical and digital release becomes a long term norm, its only the large canvas and magnum opus brand of cinema that’ll find theatrical takers which pretty much means the death of single screens as well as most of Bollywood’s masala movie factory (as most large large canvas films in Hindi cinema are junk with poor word of mouth). Ideal setting for a Hollywood takeover of the urban multiplex chains across India as most folks would rather watch a Marvel, DC, Disney, Bond or Nolan movie on the IMAX than spend their buck on Sooryavanshi & Radhe if the same are available on PVOD or digital.

As per BOI, Zee has pegged digital and PVOD rights at 130 cr which is more than double the worldwide theatrical distribution rights of 60 cr. I am sure Zee will go for a simultaneous PVOD to increase its subscription base and recover some of that absurd amount of 130 cr.
Simultaneous PVOD can affect the box office collections of large canvass and magnum opus brand of cinema too. Look at WW84’s collections, it is surely a movie to catch in theaters? Agree that this trend can wreck havoc on existing masala paradigm of film-making in India.
Provided it releases on Eid, I am not sure if Radhe can recover its 60 cr theatrical distribution price. It will need minimum 100 cr nett to do that and it will face competition from its own simultaneous PVOD release as well as from Black Widow and Satyamev Jayate 2.

“Look at WW84’s collections, it is surely a movie to catch in theaters?” ~ not the best idea to draw conclusions from a poorly rated film carrying negative word of mouth esp during the middle of the peak of the pandemic in both the US and Europe. Simultaneous release is a poor business strategy for all stakeholders involved at a time when movie piracy is rampant. I doubt such a volatile strategy would stand the test of time for tentpole films, although for small and medium budget movies it might be the way forward. Eventually I doubt anyone whose in sound state of mind and not a lazy slob would wanna watch a big screen entertainer in home viewing (unless they can afford 80 inch OLED TVs with woofer systems, even that has its limits). Even till last year films released online within 2-3 months of theatrical release yet theaters still had a substantial audience. Exhibitors and multiplexes themselves would re-strategize in the eventuality of simultaneous release platforms and in a way that might even lead to pocket friendlier and a more wholesome movie viewing experience even in the theaters. Only time will tell.

The year has been a disaster due to the pandemic as it saw just one HIT film with Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior. This is the worst return ever with the previous worst being 2002 which saw 4 HITS (Raaz, Devdas, Saathiya and Ek Chhotisi Love Story). Obviously 2002 was bad because many films did not work while 2020 was an enforced bad year due to covid.
There were films that found an audience when theatres were shut but whether these were Average, Hit or Super Hit that is impossible to tell as there was no box office. So for these films all we can label them is with success tag which means the year saw one blockbuster and a handful of successes.
BLOCKBUSTER
Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior released in January scored heavily at the box office and also recorded very good numbers on satellite. No doubt the results would have been very good on digital as well. The film created history in Maharashta by grossing over 100 crore nett in the state becoming only the second film to do so after Bahubali – The Conclusion. The film is not just the biggest HIT in Maharashtra this year but one of the biggest of all times. In Mumbai circuit (which includes Gujarat) the film did 143 crore nett while films like PK, Dangal and Ek Tha Tiger stand at around 103-104 crore nett.
SUCCESSES
Baaghi 3 was released in March and had a seven day run across India and then another 3-4 days in some circuits as the pandemic hit and cinemas start to shut down. The film grossed 92 cr with most of that coming in week one but even here the collections would have been affected by covid as talk of lockdowns had started. The film proved to the biggest HIT on television of 2020 beating Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior which confirmed that the film would have easily done higher numbers if it was released earlier in the year rather than March
Dil Bechara saw a digital release on Disney Hotsar in July and scored with record numbers at that time as it hit 22 lakh concurrent views on release. The film found an audience as it released after the death of the lead actor of the film Sushant Singh Rajput and the death was news at that time. The film would probably have not done well was it not for the death as a few months later the film fared very badly on satellite when the death was not main news. But the fact is on release it found an audience for whatever reason and that qualifies for some sort of success.
Laxmii saw a digital release on Disney Hotstar in November and smashed all digital records outside cricket as it recorded 37 lakh concurrenet views on release. The film had seen huge negativity since the trailer released but this did not stop the audience turning up in huge numbers to watch the film. The film would have seen very good numbers in the Maharashtra / Gujarat belt especially if it had a normal theatrical release on Diwali. North may have been a different story as there it would be depending just on Akshay Kumar star presence as the content would have held little appeal there.
Coolie No. 1 saw a digital release on Amazon Prime and became the top show on Amazon on Christmas. The concurrent views on release are not known but a fair bet could be in the 30 lakh region. The film though was watched in a record 3500 plus cities across India which is a record. Although Amazon is second to Hotstar in terms of subscribers it may have a wider reach with subscription in more cities due to more regional content which has led to the huge reach of Coolie No1. Again like Laxmii this film saw huge negativity but still it found a huge audience to emerge a success. The film also fared well Overseas as far as Indian content goes on Amazon prime but Overseas is all about face value and this would be the first time that Amazon premiered anything with face value for the NRI diaspora.
BELOW AVERAGE (These cant be called successes but are also probably cant be called FLOPS especially in such a bad year)
Malang released in February and grossed a fair 58 crore nett. Sattellite was not too good though.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan released in February grossed a fair 59 crore nett and saw mediocre results on television.
Khuda Haafiz released in August on Disney Hotsar and saw decent results of 10 lakh plus concurrent views on release.
The year saw a lot of negativity for the film industry in the digital world but the actual audience is very smart and will watch what they want irrespective of what is being said. People can praise things by words into the skies but still no audience and others can be trashed like anything but the paying public will still watch if they really want to.

So Tenet’s officially crossed INR 12 Cr net in India now (60% of Dunkirk’s domestic collection despite 50% occupancy and lower ticket prices) while WW84 struggles to INR 10 Cr net at the end of week 1. WW84 indeed seems to be carrying negative word of mouth across the globe (collections are disastrous in China and Pacific where Tenet did extremely well), yet another misfire from DC universe that’s struggled to offer much beyond the intriguing and exceptional Batman-Joker films.

Tenet is extraordinary
Can’t add anything more as it’s a lot to take it, both experience and plot-wise, but even if you’re the dumbest viewer possible, there are enough extraordinary moments to keep you hooked without wanting to take a break.

Especially when watched on the imax screen with surround sound systems, just the format its made for. Although no denying the fact that extremely convoluted narrating & jarring sound effects did make it hard to grasp at times, yet an astonishingly well made film despite its flaws.

If Salman’s got a semblance of professional etiquette, respect for his profession as an artist & gratitude for his fanbase, he’d perhaps realize whatever he is today is because of celluloid & the big screen. Its easy to stand for something when the going is rosy however its tough times like these that require an element of respect & gratitude from the performers, film makers as well as us audiences who’ve spent our childhood relishing cinema on the big screen. Which is the exact reason why all big one’s like Sooryavanshi, Radhe & 83 gotta come in cinemas even if it means making losses. Coming on OTT would also mean the end of the so called superstars careers as none of their fans or neutral audiences are interested in watching masala films on a mobile screen or a laptop, the medium just doesn’t match.

100% occupancy is STUPID and a death trap. AVOID. We are now in national lockdown in UK. Imagine we were first to get Pfizer and oxford AstraZeneca vaccine but the new variant is so quicker than first version. Hopefully the vaccination programs accelerate quickly but seriously anyone hoping for a return to normal life soon should get their brains checked. A movie is not a priority.

Whatever positive news from vaccines has been wiped out by this new variant. Though it does feel like this is the final big push over Jan-Jun 21.
UK plans to vaccinate some 14mn by mid Feb with first dose of Pfizer or Oxford vaccine. Mainland Europe has started slowly, pretty sure US has vaccinated 4mn or so. At some point it will be less about covid case counting and more about vaccine tracking. When that happens everywhere it will be better to think about opening the economy. Till then the opening/closing merrygoround doesn’t work. It’s disruptive to every human being be it a family or business or child. Best to kill this virus than give it any chance to breathe or mutate again. Even the economics will play out better.

Even though cases in India have been on a downward spiral for the last 3 months, 100% occupancy is ridiculous. If any of them becomes a cluster, even the current 50% occupancy would not be an option. Cautious resumption with utmost precaution is the only way forward for now till 50% of India receives the vaccine.

I wouldn’t hedge my bets on anything in Georgia right now, no one has any idea whatsoever, but I will tell this, though it is utterly disgusting and completely unbecoming, one has to admire the sheer Republican spirit to fight for bull. If the Democrats had shown even a tenth of the same spirit in 2000, with Bush v. Gore, the world could have been a much better place today. I have been a great critic of American imperialism, but then we really don’t understand why we need to save that myth right now. We are faced with what is already my generation’s biggest threat, China. I really can’t emphasize how dangerous their ambitions are. Although I despise Trump, his hardline approach to them was making me happy till his botched administration hurt the US more and more.
There is a bipartisan consensus over China now. Even if Blue Dogs and RINOs with Wall Street still naively believe that China will be their friend, progressives on the left will bring up Hong Kong, Xinjiang, Taiwan and Tibet while the MAGA mad beast will want a hardline stance. If we need to stop the Chinese, the US has to get its act together. It is stupid, but it is a country that has frequently shown it can rebound from its disasters. If we give up on them, we have no chance.

Hundred per cent occupancy in movie theatres cannot be allowed yet, the Union home ministry told Tamil Nadu today. THE AIADMK government of the state, which lifted the restrictions on movie theatres last week, was told to scrap its order making that allowance.
The Union home ministry has so far allowed 50 per cent occupancy in movie theatres outside containment zones as part of the phased unlock process.
Giving that reminder to the state, a letter from the Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla said the Home Ministry has extended those guidelines till January 31.
“State/UT governments shall not dilute these guidelines… in any manner and shall strictly enforce the same,” the letter read, pointing to the ministry guidelines.

I’d argue that the Republican Party was dying anyway, some of the R senators who protested the objection actually reasoned that this could set a precedent for the Dems to abolish the electoral college. One of them frankly said, “conservatives can’t win without the electoral college”.
Of course, Trump turned the suburbanites totally into the Democrat fold, but he is the most popular part of the Republican Party. It’s no longer a national party in a serious way, and with today, they are dead.

Wide angle shots, extraordinary sound design, action choreography and a thrilling background score coupled with strong performances, HEAT is classic big screen blockbuster template (a film that Chris Nolan’s confessed to taking huge inspiration from).

Khuda Haafiz which was released on Disney Hotstar in August and was one of the very few OTT succeses of the year along with Laxmi, Coolie No1 and Dil Bechara (read here). has reiterated that success on satellite as it racked up almost 55 lakh impressions. Its not success at the level of Commando 3 which also featured the same actor Vidyut Jammwal but 10 lakh views on OTT on release and 55 lakh impressions on satellite release are decent results especially in this horrible year.
Gunjan Saxena – The Kargil Girl which also released in August on Netflix in had mediocre results on satellite as it recorded 31.5 lakh impressions on release. This is 42% less than Khuda Haafiz. Although its actually better than Dil Bechara but thats not saying much as Dil Bechara was not much of a film and its OTT success was mainly as the release was post the death of its lead actor Sushant Singh Rajput. The numbers of Gunjan Saxena – The Kargil Girl on satellite means its pretty much lights out for the film in the long run.
The biggest BLOCKBUSTER ever in Indian cinema SHOLAY (1975) again showed the force it is still today as it racked up almost 45 lakh impressions. This is 45 years after release and the audience still cant get enough of the epic. Its the greatest example of critics mouth saying one thing and the paying public doing exactly the opposite. The pocket never lies but words coming out of mouths of critics are usually lack of knowledge on films or lies and there is no bigger proof of that than Sholay.

And thank god we have very likeable leads as its main characters instead of flawed humans that so many independent makers of today are obsessed with.

The Tamil film Master due to release on 13th January has seen a huge demand for tickets across Tamil Nadu. The way plans are filling up you would assume there is no pandemic and it seems that every ticket available will be sold by the time the film releases as demand outstrips supply due to 50% capacity restrictions. In reality this may not be the case as its near impossible to sell every ticket but its going to be pretty close which is phenomenal.
The advance is also super strong in Bangalore and Hyderabad with the original Tamil version being superstrong in both cities and even the Telugu version getting a very strong advance in Hyderabad. The Tamil version has also seen a good response in some properties in Mumbai and Delhi. These are properties around educational institutes which probably have many students from Tamil Nadu. Still its the best advance these properties will have seen post the reopenng of cinemas.
The Hindi version of the film named Vijay The Master will see a release on the 14th January and here the advance is lacklustre which is expected. Still the film has a big release and there should be enough of a crowd on day one to ensure it is also the best opening in the Hindi belts post Covid19.
The box office is going to back for sure in a huge way in Tamil Nadu on the 13th and Andhra Pradesh has seen solid responses with a couple of films and while Vijay The Master should push the Hindi markets to higher levels it will still be a waiting game for one of the audience friendly biggies like Sooryavanshi or Radhe. Seeing the response to Master shows that cinema is cinema and irreplaceable where success can be felt (lets say initial success here) while all the OTT premieres come and go like a theatrical flop even if they find an audience.
