A spicy third Test could be on the cards at the SCG after Australian captain Tim Paine revealed tensions “are starting to boil” as a result of unnamed sources within the Indian camp who have been complaining about the quarantine provisions and the location of the fourth and final Test.
Speaking on Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s Test in Sydney, Paine made it crystal clear that sections of the Australian set-up weren’t thrilled about reports suggesting India did not want to travel to Brisbane if they had to adhere to strict hotel quarantine protocols.

Yes. Considerably, Pujara slowed down the innings massively after Shubman’s departure. Hopefully he will make some runs at least now!!!! Rohit’s departure was meek. 96/2 – still a long way to go.

Amusing that u guys still have hope when half the team’s out with injury and the captain himself has left the team in the middle of a crisis. The fact that we won a test itself is a huge achievement in such circumstances.

Well half the team was out in in the 2nd match. The bowlers did a fine job on day 2. Plus the batting line-up is strong. But at least a couple of batsmen need to put big scores and that’s not happening at all and that’s disappointing. Let’s see.

This is one of the weakest batting line up’s India’s had since the 90s. Exact reason why we lost in SA, UK & NZ between 2018-20. No reliable openers & a middle order that’s dodgy barring Kohli (Pujara’s no Dravid & Rahane’s a huge underachiever). With Shami, Ishant, Umesh & now Jadeja missing even the bowling’s down to almost nothing. Avoiding an innings defeat itself is an achievement with such a team.

India’s batting in their 2nd innings record is pathetic. Be it in England, Australia, NZ, SA. When was the last time any of our batsmen Scored a ton in 2nd innings in SENA countries? Probably Kohli’s Adelaide captaincy debut 5-6 years back

I hope you’re referring to the post 2013 batting line up coz Sehwag, Sachin, Ganguly, Dravid and in particular VVS have a lot of memorable second innings scores in the careers.

On Pujara’s pathetic batting…
Pujara has received a lot of flak for his slow approach during his sluggish half-century from the cricket pundits. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting even went onto say that the slow approach turned the tables in favour of the hosts on day three.
The former skipper criticised India’s “lacklustre” effort with the bat, pointing at visitors’ batting mainstay Pujara.
Ponting said Pujara’s slow batting created an unwanted pressure on the non-striker who had to compensate for his slow approach.
“I think (Pujara) has got to be better than that. He’s 16 off his first 100 balls with no boundaries. That is — and I don’t care who you are — if you’re at the other end and someone is batting like that, so much more pressure comes back on you,” cricket.com.au quoted Ponting as saying.

There is no hurry to score run; The same approach worked well in 2018-2019. Match these days never last 5 days; so where is the pressure coming from? But based on form, I probably would send Jadeja slightly up.
You need to make ball soft otherwise you are going to give edges to keeper or slip fielders.
You can test this by simply asking Pant to open or 1 down; he will not survive. And precisely this is why Rohit is a non factor in over seas.

@Munna I am not talking about slow batting or gobbling up no-run balls. The point is, if you are going to take that defensive approach, hit 16 off of 100 balls, you better make sure you at least go in for the long haul and get a century at least!. Yesterday Smith hit 10 of 56 balls, but look at how he took on the bowlers later! The Indian team is like everybody wants to hit a half-century and get out! Gill, Pant, I understand it is not in their DNA to be stubbornly defensive and frustrate the bowlers. They can mainly frustrate the bowlers only by being proactive.
Well, I guess asking back the dream trio of Sachin, Dravid, and Laxman is a tough task but…

I dislike when a batsman give away their wicket even if they have scored century. In Test cricket, bowler should earn the wicket. I grew up when test match used to be draw most of the times. You basically grind the bowler. Today’s batting is what I expect in test. It is unglamorous and boring but I love such contest where both have chance.
ps – I am somewhat defensive when Pujara is criticized; he doesn’t play glamorous forms of the game (T20 and ODI). He values his wicket and I like it.

Test cricket is so unique that a Pant or Pujara strategy can coexist. But you can’t fill your team with Pants or Pujaras…you need to find the right balance.

An amazing 5th day and fantastic survival instincts. If not for the foolishness of Pant charging down the pitch at 97, it could have been the difference between loss and victory. Great innings by Pant, hope he had looked at the bigger picture!

He had already got a psychological edge over Nathan Lyon. At 97, instead of upping his confidence and getting to 100, he charged down the pitch to smash him, which really wasn’t required. That 100 would have boosted his confidence further up a notch and the match could very well have been won by India…
I am not talking about a win, that would be too greedy, but he didn’t realize the value of his wicket..and he didn’t look at the bigger picture..There are times when you should swallow your ego and look at the bigger picture; primarily in test cricket. I don’t care how reckless one is in those stupid T-20s..but here, mental strength is a prized asset for a batsman.

Yes that is a cockyness needed when you graduate to Sehwag’s level. But I am happy for Pant. I’m a fan. Given the team has Pujara they can afford a luxury occasionally but he should be sensible and realise if India won here they couldn’t lose the series.

India wasn’t winning even if Pant had scored his 100. Miracles like Headingly happen once in a 100 years.
Pant was dropped TWICE while trying to defend (the first time when he had scored just 1) and he scored 97 when he attacked. That’s precisely why he has to do what he does best — go after the bowling.
The rush of blood at 97 was uncalled for any ‘normal’ batsman. But Pant isn’t just any normal batsman. Sehwag went for a similar glory shot when he was batting on 195.
We have to accept that these cricketers are just different.

Irrespective of what happens in Brisbane (with half the side injured), the resilience shown at the MCG & the SCG after a 36 all out drubbing in Adelaide is at par with what Ganguly’s team (minus Kumble) achieved in 2001 after being asked to follow on in Kolkata post a 3 day defeat in Mumbai against the greatest Aussie team ever. The difference being at that point it was about individuals in Laxman, Dravid & Harbhajan while right now its the entire team.

if we lose the 4th Test at Gabba, we need to whitewash England 4-0 at home to stay ahead of NZ.
If we draw in Gabba, we can win 3-0 and draw one home match and still stay ahead of NZ
If we win at Gabba, we have to win at least 2 matches against England at home to remain ahead of NZ.

And this guy’s been an ODI discard for the last 3 years despite being a genuine bowling all rounder who’d be an asset in an ODI team at #8. Forget Ashwin, even Jadeja was a discard in the 2019 WC till the semis and folks like Vijay Shankar were selected ahead of these 2. Precise reason why I believe Kohli’s captaincy and team selection has always been questionable.

last team which conquered Gabba was the mighty West Indies in 1988. 33 years since the Aussies have lost there. Ambrose, Walsh, Marshall each got 6-7 each in both Innings. Greenidge and Richardson Scored 80s in the first innings. Ambrose was MOTM.

Will say this loud and clear — the win at MCG and the draw at Sydney is second only to India’s heroics in Calcutta, circa 2001. Even Ben Stokes at Headingly doesn’t compare favourably, I’d reckon.
This current Indian team with its injury concerns and absence woes had no business, absolutely no business, standing tall at 1-1 after the first three tests. Especially after being 36 all out.
This level of fightback is just insane and a great gift for Indian cricket fans. I don’t really care what happens at Brisbane anymore, and I don’t care about the WTC Final either, I’m just happy to see this level of grit displayed on a cricket field.
The fact that Pant and Vihari batted while taking pain-killers or the fact that Jadeja was padded up with a broken left hand, and Ashwin carried on despite a bad back and copping a few blows to his body — this is the stuff of legends.
Rahane’s grit at MCG; Vihari’s blockathon in Sydney; Pujara being Pujara… yeah there’s lots to savour for Indian cricket fans. After the retirement of India’s original Big Four, Test cricket still feels like heaven!
What more can one ask for?!

Oh, and just to be clear, we’ve never had a bowler like Bumrah…ever! Come to think of it, he’s a special one in Test cricket’s history as well.
Jadeja is one of the all time great all rounders in Test cricket. Ashwin will go down as an all time great as well.
I don’t know how long Test cricket will last, but I sure hope it does. There’s absolutely no spectacle, no bigger a mental battle in any other sport, as far as I can recall.

This team’s too inconsistent to be at par with the era of 2001-11 despite having a far superior bowling attack right now. The batting’s too volatile now while back then the fab 5 of the line up were capable of amassing 400 & 500+ scores in SENA, WI & Pakistan tests, something that enabled them to square off against the mighty Aussies in 03-04, win in Perth in 08, win in Pak in 04, in WI in 06, UK in 07, NZ in 09 & almost pull it off in SA in 2010-11. All this despite just 3 genuine long term wicket taking bowlers in Zaheer, Kumble & Harbhajan. Dravid the TEST CAPTAIN is often ignored due to the 07 WC fiasco. We won a series in Pak, our first test win in SA in 06, a series in UK in 07 & WI in 06 (after 35 years), all under him.

We all remember the extremely underrated and underachieving Gautam Gambhir for his 97 in the WC final but the 643 minute marathon to save the Napier test in 2009 (eventually a series winning effort, our first in NZ since 1967) should rank right up there in my books. Shekhar Gupta’s managed to make me nostalgic with this episode.

Rahane dropping him when the score was 93/3 is gonna cost us huge! Dropping catches in test cricket is a crime especially with an inexperienced bowling attack. Kudos to the trio of Siraj, Saini and Natarajan for bowling their heart out.

This series has been the most startling fightback from Indians. It has taken Aussies by surprise and when opposition team’s supporters start liking your game more than their own team’, you know that their hearts are won.

Test cricket at it’s best..By far the best Test cricket is recent years..What a strong bench strength India has..I knew about Thakur’s batting abilities which he had shown in one T-20 games..but Sundar was equally good..To face that quality pace attack and remain at the crease just to give marginal lead to Aussie

36 all out with full strength. A 2-1 win with a B team. Rahane deserves full time test captaincy now. Kohli’s a great player no doubt but his selection, on field behavior and ability to motivate his team has been found wanting in each IPL season, the CT final 2017 or the 2019 world cup as well as now.

Pujara was India’s heart. He values his wicket the most and this time the team had great balance. I think Australia were heavy favourites on final day…forget that every test match they were favourites but India displayed lots of bottle.

In this team…Pujara is the first name on team sheet, even before Kohli. He is a unique batsman now in world cricket. A throw back to bygone era and one opposition will become literally physically and mentally tired of. He can bat 200 balls and score meagre runs but others can capitalise.

My selection of India XI for next test against England. I won’t play Pandya purely as a batsman in Tests. He needs to be able to bowl. Would have preferred Shreyas Iyer over Pandya as a pure batsman. Pandya can’t build a Test innings at 20/4.

For me, the MOM should have been Shardul with 3 wickets in 1st innings, 67 runs in 2nd innings, 4 wickets in 3rd innings

Mayank has scored in every test series before this. He deserves a longer rope. By this yardstick Rahane would be the first to be ousted since he’s been patchy & inconsistent since 2016-17 season while Rohit is still a non starter in tests.

We had to stick with Pant for 3 years before he showed his mettle. Youngsters need to be persisted with. You cannot chuck someone out based on 1 or 2 series. Everyone including Pujara had a tough time in NZ. Unfair to target Mayank alone.

Rahane averaged 12.6 against England at home in 2016, 3.4 against SL at home in 2017, 25.7 in England in 2018, 31 in Aus in 2018, 22 in NZ in 2020 and 38 in the just concluded series in Aus (a scratchy Melbourne century notwithstanding). Based on batting form, he should be the first one to be booted out looking at his experience and caliber.

Why would India need Pandya at home? Surely he is more useful in SENA as a 4th bowling option allrounder. In India go with spinning allrounder like Washington or Jadeja when fit. Have Ashwin plus 3 seamers. In England have Ashwin and 4 seamers.

It’s been a long, long time since the famous India v Pak rivalry has been steam-rolled and taken over by India v Aus. Ever since Tendulkar smashed Shoaib over 3rd man for a 6 in the 2003 WC in SA and healed India of the curse of Miandad’s 6, there’s been no going back for India and Pak has just been one of the many opponents for India.

Ahead of the Ashes in the last 2 decades by daylight. 2001, 03-04, 2004, 07-08, 2017, 18-19 and now 20-21. Every one of them hard fought memorable series wins. Barring the 2005 series and the freakish Headingly test of 2019, The Ashes has little to show for when compared to Kolkata/Chennai 2001, Adelaide 03, Mumbai 04, Sydney/Perth 08, Mohali ’10, Adelaide ’14, Bangalore ’17, Adelaide ’18 and now Brisbane ’21. The list of Ind-Aus memorable tests in the last 2 decades is endless. Even draws like the one in Ranchi in 2017 or Melbourne 2014, Sydney 2004 or now Sydney 2021 are stuff of legend.

In an interview with cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle, Rahane revealed that he decided not to cut that cake because “kangaroo is their national animal” and it is important to respect the opposition and their sentiments regardless of whether you win or lose.

NZ are in the final of the WTC. Even though they only won one overseas match against a weak Lankan side.
They took full points in home series against India, Windies, Pakistan though
India took full points in home series against South Africa, Bangladesh and Windies away. And 70 points out of 120 against Australia. And need to get minimum of 70 points against England v?at home to make it to the final (2-0(80 points), 2-1(70 points), 3-0(100 points), 3-1(90 points), 4-0(120 points) will see India through)
Overseas win should have been given more weightage but alas.

This WTC format is a complete joke on test cricket. How ridiculous is it for teams to slog it out in 4 and 5 test match series only to play a solo test against an unknown opponent masquerading as a championship final? Sorry to say, Test cricket is no T20 and the ICCs attempts to popularize tests by having a format as bogus as this is not gonna have any value in the long run.

I agree top 4 teams should play 4 tests home and away. India, England, NZ, Australia should fight it out amongst each other. bottom team should be relegated to next tier. The top team in next tier should contest a 4/5 test series with the relegated team to get into top 4.
Finals should be a series of 5 matches, 2 home 2 away and one in a neutral country

One seamer out of 2 can easily have an off day so needed 3 seamers.
2 spinners is enough.
This is a batting pitch and far too charitable of India to prepare like this. Australia and England secure home advantage by testing opposition with bouncy, seaming pitches. India should be preparing tough spinning wickets.

1 test series doesn’t matter. Eg. I doubt Australia all of sudden will stop producing bouncy, fast wickets when India tour again just cos they lost 1 series.
India’s strength is spin bowling and they should have better batting prowess against spin then England.
Maybe it’s just a bad day for India and a good one for England.
1st session is crucial tomorrow. Dangermen Stokes and Butler need to be taken out cheaply otherwise a mammoth 500+ score is on the cards.

Likes of Rohit, Ajinkya, Virat should be out on notice period for not performing in the recent matches from Adelaide. Take away Ajinkya’s Melbourne effort and he has been a big zero. Washington, Thakur and Siràj have shown that raw debutants can perform.
Ashwin with the fake all rounder mask should be clearly informed that he is only a second choice to Jaddu.
Do they have a worst performer for every match? They should and put him under observation. Like done in corporates.

This precise appalling inconsistency is what i mentioned about earlier and why this bunch (Aus seems to be the only team they perform against) would never be at par with the 2001-10 team. This is India’s 10th test defeat to Eng since Dravid’s & Laxman’s retirement. Great teams do not have ‘bogey’ teams (India won against every team in the 00s despite stiffer opponents like Pak & a stronger WI). This team’s never getting the better of Eng & NZ.

looks like Ashwin will get to 400 Test wickets before Lyon. He is currently on 394 wickets at Lunch Day 4 2nd Test in Chennai. Still 3 wickets here pending and 2 more Tests to go at Ahmedabad.
Will Lyon was 10 short beginning of Australia India series, He could only get 9 there. With Australia pulling out of the Saffie tour due to Covid issues, Lyon will need to probably wait till Afghanistan tour Australia later this year.

Nurturing talent and randomly putting a bowling all rounder to open in test cricket are 2 totally different things. Even Shardul Thakur smacked boundaries against Cummins square of the wicket on the on & off side. Mayank & Rahul have both done well at home. Anyone will do. Question is, why would the BCCI wanna organize a day night test when they know it can be detrimental to the home teams prospects?

Sachin Tendulkar had also called for the contentious ‘Umpire’s Call’ to be scrapped altogether, terming it as ambiguous, harsh and unfair on players.

I think rules are transparent and same for both teams.
I think the technology is not good enough that is why they have 50% of ball for LBW…During run outs, we get into situation with two frames and we wish there were one more intermediate frame to be sure about decision…Or the soft signal based on player’s call…it is difficult to figure if ball has touched ground or fingers went underneath..the perception of depth is misleading in such cases even with technology.

Meantime, Kohli continues to mess up selection. Even Kuldeep got a second chance in Chennai. Why not Bhuvi? He was player of the match in his last Test at The Wanderers resulting in a series levelling win for India. He should be preferred over Bumrah and Ishant in India where pace bowlers have limited impact. At least Bhuvi could contribute with the bat and strengthen the lower order which is so fragile

Sachin, Dravid, Sourav,VVS & Azhar used to get 300+ scores on such wickets in the 90s & early 00s. Matthew Hayden got the better of Indian spinners on similar wickets in 2001. This wicket’s not half as lethal as Mumbai 2004, yet the batting scores from both sides are shocking. Pretty much shows the quality of batsmen in testing circumstances in the T20 era.

I am not that worried about the pitch condition. My English friends are not happy. Batting was possible just very poor. Like the 2nd test you were never in as a batsmen as you could get an unusual delivery any time. So strategy should have been get in quick, score quick and last as long as possible.
India never complain in alien conditions for them. You have to adjust.
It wasn’t a dangerous pitch. 70% of wickets were bowled/lbw – batsmen were playing for spin that didn’t happen.
That said you don’t want many matches finishing in 2 days. And certainly you don’t want that stigma attached that you will carry on doing it like this.
Balance should be there.

The entire debate around the pitch is the stuff of drama queens. The Motera pitch was very similar to the one used in Chepauk for the 2nd test & had India gotten 245 instead of 145 or Sharma gotten another 160 runs, we wouldn’t be having this debate. I remember similar complaints after the Mohali test of 2015 against SA but Nagpur offered the same conditions and India’s batsmen outdid SA by a mile. Test cricket’s about beating the home team at its own game like Eng did to India in 2012 or India to the Aussies last month. Precisely why its called Test Cricket. Whining about pitches is not Test cricket’s spirit.

I agree a lot. On the flipside, it is a 5 day game. The attempt should be to prepare a pitch that plays for 5 days. I agree though there is enough evidence that
1) India scored 2 centuries in 2nd test
2) India lost the toss here but still won. It eliminates the winning toss wins match theory.
3) England and Australian media are a bunch of whiners overall.

Coach Chris Silverwood revealed on Friday he is in discussion with captain Joe Root over England’s response to the second under-prepared surface in successive Tests that saw excessive turn from the start, in breach of ICC regulations.

He does have a point but test match is for five days. I want at least 3-4 days of match. It is a problem with Australia/SA or NZ/England pitches as well. Like umpiring, pitch could be made neutral. I don’t know the repercussions but two days 4 inning is bad so is a dead wicket where people score too many runs.

Agree that test should be atleast for 4 days.
But Is the pitch bad or the batting not skilled enough on spinning or swing tracks?
Ashwin is raising exatcly this point and i agree with him.
For me a bad pitch is which is uneven or which is dangerous to bat on for uneven pace or where the bounce is either extremely low or high.
Rest all are good.

Agreed on your description here. This was not a viscous turner where ball was spinning crazy. I think the critics are unhappy because it bounced early. There are more dangerous instances where a batsmen would fear facing a WI pace attack on a poor uneven, unpredictable wicket – without a helmet!

Not really. Bhajji was the beneficiary of lack of DRS balls pitching outside leg and home umpires giving LBW (Gilchrist comes to mind in Kolkata). This would have been overturned in DRS age. Also umpiring standard in India were bad during Harbhajan/Jumbo days

Agreed most definitely. Harbhajan wouldn’t have gotten a hattrick had it been for DRS. Yet the final wicket tally of 619 for Kumble and 417 for Harbhajan would have more or less remained the same as DRS is a double edge sword. Ashwin’s miles ahead of Bhajji as a off spinner now that he’s performed in alien conditions too. Kumble’s 619 tally might not be breached though. And Kumble’s the best performing ODI bowler among the lot too, not to forget his legendary 24 wicket haul in Australia in 03-04.

In Chennai, he was the lone warrior with England having posted 600+, he made 85
In A’bad he came at 146/6 with India in serious threat of giving a first innings lead. Along with Pant took score to 365. Nevermind he was stranded on 96*
These runs show great character he possesses. If one says his technique is not good enough for top 6, look at Steve Smith.

I do not know about the conspiracy part. The character of an innings is measured by many different metrics, not just on the paper-record and statistics. To me, Tendulkar’s 136 in Chennai versus Pak and his 98 off 75 against Pak in 2003 in Centurion remains his best. Though he won the the Sharjah desert storm alone on back to back centuries and really carried the burden of the team, his play in Centurion remains my favorite. He was facing Akram, Waqar, and Shoaib. Go figure. So I think his 94 will and should be taken in the right spirit and shouldn’t be dismissed just for that lack of a century.
Sundar showed remarkable grit, composure, and determination. He was getting tired early in the morning but he played a classy, master-piece of an innings. He showed respect to the bowlers and picked on the hits very judiciously. This is not a number 8 batsman does!!

Agreed. Kohli’s especially is worrying since I think he got out for duck twice!! Rahane is in form if you look at the way he got to his 28 but is just not able to to convert his flow into a big score. Gill is becoming inconsistent. It is indeed bewildering that it is mainly the lower order and the spinners that have been the back-bone of wins in Australia and India.

Rahane’s been horrendously patchy for over 4 years now. He’s averaging under 35 since the 2016-17 season with barely any big scores to his credit. The only reason he’s survived thus far is because of the fact that till the Aussie tour India couldn’t find a middle order batsman who could even match up to Rahane’s limited performances (especially overseas). Now with Vihari, KL Rahul & Mayank staring down and Washington performing well with the bat with Jadeja waiting in the wings, Rahane’s days are numbered unless he pulls up his socks. For a guy who possesses the talent that he does and one who scored 8 test hundreds in his first 3 years of International test cricket (one each in Aus, Eng, WI & NZ with a 96 in SA too) he’s been Indian cricket’s biggest disappointment of the decade! From having being called the next Azharuddin or VVS of the middle order he’s now gonna have to perform or perish, especially with age not being on his side.

Shami & Umesh are the same age and you do not chuck out guys solely on the age criteria, else Anderson & Broad would have left cricket 6 years ago. On my selection, I had put up India’s best XI for Gabba test one day prior. And that was the exact team that played. And we can see the result.

The Father of modern day power hitting. Till the 1996 WC the traditional ODI approach was to preserve wickets till the 40th over and then go for the slog in the last 10. Jayasuriya with his brand of aggressive batting in the first 15 overs (catching the opposition unawares & putting them on the backfoot) turned the entire game on its head. So impactful was his brand of cricket, it went on to inspire an entire generation of young budding batsmen including the millennial greats like Chris Gayle, Sehwag and Adam Gilchrist. Even his contemporaries like Saeed Anwar and the great Sachin Tendulkar himself underwent a paradigm shift in their batsmanship post Sanath’s ’96 WC exploits. It wouldn’t be unfair to call Jayasuriya the “Father of modern day T20” just like Vivian Richards is perhaps the Father of ODI batsmanship.

Ishant has been India’s best performer in the UK. No reason for Bhuvaneshwar to be selected ahead of Ishant or Shami as he’s barely played a test in the last 2 years. Bhuvi has always been a better white ball bowler while the red ball exponents have been Ishant, Shami & Umesh.

You do not chuck out a talented youngster like Shubnam Gill based on one poor series. Persistence with young talent despite patchy form is what gives them the assurance that they’re free to play their natural game without a sword to axe them at the drop of a hat. It took the likes of Yuvraj Singh & now Rishabh Pant a good 2-3 years before they got to their best and the only reason they became what they are is because they were persisted with despite a rocky ride initially. Dropping Gill within the next 10 tests would be catastrophic and poor temperamental judgement in my opinion.

Yuvraj achieved more in tests than you imagine. Breaking into the middle order when you have Dravid, Sachin, VVS & Ganguly is next to impossible. And when he did he won us a test against England in the 4th innings & saved us a series against Pakistan by hammering 169 when India were 61/4. When the time for him was ripe to become a test regular, cancer ended his career. Have some respect for talent. This is not a game of rummy. Its fans like you which prove that Indian cricket fans & Indians in general are a bunch of emotionally unstable & mentally volatile fools.

The Chennai 4th innings was due to God at the other end.
169 he had Ganguly scoring 239 at the other end. Even Pathan hit a ton in this match.

Raina, Kaif and Badrinath do not have the talent, technique or skill that Yuvraj possessed, even a novice would tell you that. Yes Yuvraj underperformed in tests in his limited opportunities but I’m sure post Ganguly’s retirement in 2008-09 he’d have cemented his place and had an extended run had it not been for his illness. Rohit Sharma’s taken 12 years to become a test regular and is now our premier batsman at the age of 33. Yuvraj was only 29 in 2010. A legendary middle order through the decade and then his illness never allowed him to maintain a consistent spot and play carefree test cricket like Rohit Sharma and Pant are able to right now. Exactly why the talented Shubman Gill needs a free hand for at least the next 6-8 tests before we take a call on him.

Illegitimate and rampant chopping & changing is a highlight of the trash 20 format coz that’s the closest we get to cricket’s version of pornography and gambling. Test cricket is a patient, perseverant and skilled sportsman’s forte. It needs time for a player to flourish, exactly in sync with the nature of test cricket itself. Precisely why test cricket could never be within the comfort zone of an overrated, supremely volatile and extremely limited and corrosive batsman like MS Dhoni whose technique was not only a sore to the eyes, but the closest you get to making cricket an upgraded version of gilli danda.

I am thinking particularly Dravid whose playing life was torn between his desire to make cricket the sole domain of those who genuinely care and his having to contribute toward all the idolatry, showmanship, instant gratification, fast cheques, and television rights that by early 2000s had become the game’s economic mainstays.
Leave it to Dravid and he may get a bill passed which insists that all cricketing coups have the same lineaments as Kapil Dev’s odyssey at Tunbridge Wells: No TV footage; hardly any spectators; set up to be passed down the generations like oral poetry.
Inside India’s greatest No 3, one could sense lurking a loner perfectionist’s secret wish to have nobody, nothing, no medium, come between him and the honing of his craft.
Kolkata 2001 was when Dravid managed to, somehow, divest his face of that bland reliability and acquire a look of electric intensity.
His career up until then was a series of comebacks, and this time he was coming back to prove that he too had the stuff of showbiz, that he could play the big hand and do it like a celebrity.
The first time he took off his helmet in the course of that 180, it felt like a Westerner’s pragmatic response to a rifle-wielding gunman; the gunman being McGrath, smilingly threatening to run him out.
The second time the helmet came off, after his century, he was taunting those pundits in the dressing room who had demoted him, asked him to walk out at six instead of three. But in both these instances he was behaving like a man not used to being noticed, and his body showed it.

It was as if he was saying to the world: ‘Have proved my worth. Now please let the loner be.’ Batsmen grow in wit as they grow older at the crease; Dravid did not — he grew more and more shy and off to the side.

LOL @Yodha. On a serious note, this is concerning. He had a chance today to play his game of watch-stay-play and then pick up the innings. It was actually an ideal situation for him since a player of his intelligence can tackle these things like the back of hand. I am not sure why he went for that shot. The difference/confidence with which the English played and the Indians played was alarming!! England were thoroughly and thoroughly professional and cut-throat.
