  1. Master has been sold at astronomical price at the pre-pandemic level.

The response will truly let us know the true box office potential.

With 3.5 rating…the movie has done its part. For commercial films, this is excellent.

Rest is on Public…let’s see how many turns up.

    BOI:

The biggest test is coming with Master (Tamil) as that film has a 60 crore price tag in Tamil Nadu and no doubt the initial is looking as strong as it can be with reduced capacities but it will have sustain also to go above the its costs. This is not an easy task in a pandemic as the highest shares in Tamil Nadu are Viswasam at 75 crore and Bigil at 78 crore and then Bahubali – The Conclusion at 85 crore.

    • Note that how few other tamil films (Bigil / Viswasam) have come close to Baahubali level (within striking range) in tamil nadu, while in Hindi cinema, none has come within 50Cr range (~550 Cr nett in Hindi only).

  2. Pathetic is the word I can use out of respect for the farmer community. I wish they could use their brains better than the way they use tractors.

This is disgusting beyond any rational criteria. Never have I seen any government bow down, much less the Supreme Court, and stand-still on farm laws that will actually help them. This is the same, 3rd rate mentality that prevailed in 1993 during liberalization.

The central govt has capitulated, the Supreme Court has capitulated; and now, you don’t want to talk to the committee? Folks like you were all eager with open naadas to talk to the ilk of Sanjay Hegde during the so-called ‘great’ protest of CAA in Shaheen Bagh right? Now what? What’s changed?

My way or the highway!! A bunch of idiotic North Indian farmers pretending to be ‘suffering’ in the cold of North India are putting the entire country to shame. If you pull them up in a debate, they don’t have even a centipede of a brain as to what is it the laws and its clauses that is bothering them. What about the 15 states NOT belonging to North India that are happy with the laws? Who the fish is the government or the Supreme Court talking to?

Disgusting. And more disgusting is BJP’s capitulation. And more disgusting is the fact that I am writing this about our farmers.

These dumbos are going to have a tractor rally in Delhi on 26th January. FY…..

    • Upto whatever i have understood, the farm law will be helping

30% farmers in the short term and
90% of the indian farmers in the mid term.

      However it will not help

10% farmer (Mostly in 2 states) in the short term
5% of farmer in the mid term.

      ======

If i go by above logic, this is the ’91 moment in agriculture as the same was also the situation then.

So my vote goes to farm laws.

    • These are the zamindars & landlords of Punjab and Haryana being funded by ISI and Khalistani elements via Pakistan, China and Canada. None of the “real farmers” who sow the land from any other part of India (even hinterland of Haryana who aren’t aware of this nonsense) are part of this.

I don’t have much sympathy for this government and their politics but I have to somewhat agree on this. Creating inconvenience and protesting just for the sake of it has become the national pastime.
Apparently many of these farmers were burning crops to willingly pollute the air that caused severe levels of AQI even before Diwali. Who really suffered at the end of it? NCR residents and asthma patients who had nothing to do with it.
And now this drama of blocking roads and highways and surrounding the capital. If you are really worried about farm laws, why not have a dialogue with the government. No representative from the farmers’ community who has any approach in the government?

      • Why didn’t government do same thing like they did in kashmir, they should have had a lock down, no?

You will always have protest and some at large scale when it impacts majority of the people for whom the law/rule specifically targets.

So if you come up with law which specifically impacts Rikshawala, you can bet that you will get protest from all riksawalas.

But i agree with you, protesting is and has been a pastime.

Remove the wool from your eyes; and then see, talk: DATA, FACTS.

Not some bull-shit so-called ‘farmer’ putting on the facade of arranging a langar and trying to get some camera-shots for NYT or Wa PO: Have brains, then talk – else; get the f#$ out and stop inconveniencing people. India doesn’t have farmers only from Punjab and Haryana.

There are enough checks and balances in India as well. America is NOT the only beacon of democracy. Let the leaders of the US handle the kind of diversity, religious/caste/language/dialect and then we can have a report card. Let us check how they handle this kind of diversity and challenges. Let the US be placed geo-politically between a terrorist-country Pakistan and a communist China. Let’s see the brains and ‘balls’ then. Let’s see how they handle the population crises.

It’s become a fashion to mock the country and mainly its government since it doesn’t suit certain folks’ disposition. Mazaak samajh ke rakha hai admin ko? COVID; PAKISTAN; CHINA; BANGLADESH; KASHMIR.

If anybody has the balls, let them handle these concurrently and we can have a ‘healthy’ debate…

On the topic – I know someone (indirectly), who is relatively rich person (in India) sent money from US for the agitation. I am not worried about agitation but I am certainly worried about Khalistani elements infiltrating this agitation. Punjab is peaceful after bloodshed in 80s. I don’t want that to change because of new farm laws. I also don’t want it (threat of terrorism) to be used as bargaining chip. I think Govt could still let Punjab Farmers avail existing operation minus 8-9% tax Govt. has to pay to Mandi to procure and phase out Mandi slowly in 5 or 10 years. If things are working great for rest of country, Punjab Farmers are going to switch automatically.

Firstly, I apologize if you feel I am being rude and writing in an angry tone. That is not what I am.

At the same time, you need to understand that this is cumulation of response to duplicitous standards/comments put forth by you know who. I am NOT going to take any comments that are dumb and call names for the present government and the country. I need DATA/FACTS. Bring it on, and I am up for a debate. I have made it amply clear in my comments. I care a HOOT for any government; be it the CONGRESS or BJP. But when a nation is going through crises, and a government/leader is facing crises from 4-5 angles, can we not support it? It might be against mine and your disposition, but ain’t it our duty? Since folks belong to kindergarten here, let me expand: How does it matter when an 9/11 occurs and whether the DEMS or REPS are ruling? Are you going to get together or are you going to squabble as to under whose regime it happened?

Again, Munna, I am NOT going to apologize to anyone here. I HAD to say what I wanted to say: the truth. Please do feel free to ban me if I am violating any etiquettes.

Also, do remember, I am responding, and will continue responding, when falsehoods and dumb sentences/statements are put out here putting India and the government down.

He is No 1 in Tamil. His films have grown over the years and have got a solid fan base in India. Master may be the opening he needed when there is no bollywood film releasing.
Unlike other south hits like Baahubali or 2point0…this is no big budget special extravaganza. This is another Vijay’s film like his past few movies.

Master may beat the opening day numbers of Tenet in UAE which saw the best opening in UAE since cinemas reopened in late May. Tenet collected around $225k in August and Master has a chance to surpass this number. This number is for UAE only and not for all of Gulf.

So far only two films Tenet and Mulan have topped the $200k mark since last March and Master may well be the third. Even if all falls short it will still be huge achievement as Master is only playing on around 50 theatres while Tenet was 250 cinemas and Mulan was 200 cinemas.

The film has also grossed around A$250k plus in Australia and this may well turn out to be a top three opening ever in Australia for an Indian film. It is the highest for a Tamil film as 2.0 in 2018 with Tamil and Hindi was less. The collections in the Australian market are pretty normal and the market has not been affected by the pandemic too much especially over the Xmas and New Year period.

The final numbers from Australia maybe only be behind Bahubali – The Conclusion and Padmaavat.

I’ve read similar bogus reports about Prabhas till 2019 & Rajni in 2010 when factually no one gives a dime about these guys outside the south (in the same way no one gives a dime to Hindi film stars in the south outside of B’lore & Hyd). Master Good Second Day – Hindi Version Dull
        Friday 15 January 2021 14.30 IST
        Box Office India Trade Network

Master continued to do good business on day two with business over 20 crore nett. The film opened in its dubbed Hindi format Vijay The Master but the response was not too good. The film went to around 900 screens but was mainly a multiplex release as most single screens in the Hindi circuits remain shut and dubbed films have a very limited market in multiplexes.
Vijay The Master collected around 35 lakhs nett with collections mainly from Mumbai circuit with around 15 lakhs. North India collected 7 lakhs nett while East India was also 7 lakhs nett and a further 5-6 lakhs nett came from CP Berar, CI and Marathawada. These collections may seem low but its par for the course for a South dubbed film which is not coming with any brand value.

Overall the film is doing very good business as its target audience in the South is coming to the theatres. The film saw a drop in Nizam / Andhra but that was expected as there were new Telugu releases yesterday. The film is still a HIT in Nizam / Andhra. Tamil Nadu is good as it saw a normal drop on day two and took its two day total to 33.50 crore nett in the state. The all India two day business of the film is around 55 crore nett which is excellent. The second day breakdown for the film is as follows.

        Tamil Nadu – 13,00,00,000 apprx

        Nizam / Andhra – 2,75,00,000 apprx

        Karnataka – 2,00,00,000 apprx

        Kerala – 1,75,00,000 apprx

Hindi Circuits – 60,00,000 apprx (including Tamil and Telugu)

        TOTAL – 20,10,00,000 apprx

Haven’t seen the original British series and am on the first season itself but this is a wicked, engrossing drama. You can start from the middle and still be drawn in. A delicious, entertaining show that provides a bit of deja vu about an innocent, wronged citizen ending up on the other side of the law. This is a kind of old school Hindi thriller (jail scenes, troublemakers, and a whodunit at the same time) that provides you all the reasons you loved watching such genres.

The scene is clearly an allusion to the general Delhi universities street theatre culture and particularly JNU. Since it’s JNU, it’s obviously going to be against the RSS/BJP/Hindutva culture and explicitly the theme seems to be that what Gods such as Ram or Shiva would wish is that instead of charging the climate with demands for a temple, workers be paid their fair share.

There are ways it can play out in a Muslim context, but then we are a Hindu majority country and the context would be lost to many.

    • We can all be proud of the way India has handled the pandemic, right from the mask advisory given out as early as March (well before the WHO and the so called superpower nations) and the adherence to mask wearing by the general public. Natural innate immunity and focus on age old science of Siddha and Ayurveda has helped further. Unlike braindead residents of certain uncle Sam’s and colonial bigots, Indian citizens by and large continue to adhere to mask wearing in daily life even though active case load and mortality has been decreasing since the last 3 months. For an overpopulated and largely labor based society where physical distancing is as much an impossibility as long term lockdowns, the case/million count, case fatality rate and test positivity rate is astonishingly under control. Now with the vaccine rollout and the ability to mass manufacture and export, India’s on the cusp of dedicated and disciplined epidemic control yet again after the pulse polio campaigns and this time the uncle Sam’s and white colonial supremacists have no choice but to sit up and notice as their predominantly stupid citizens continue to mess up advisories and mix up mask wearing with civil liberties.

    • BOI: Master Four Day Business In Hindi Markets

Master has grossed around 2.50 crore nett plus in all formats across the Hindi belts in four days with over 50% contribution from Mumbai circuit and around 25% from Delhi / UP. The film has not done well in Hindi but if we look at the Tamil / Telugu (mainly Tamil) then its par for the course despite releasing in pandemic times.

The business of Master in all formats in Hindi circuits is as follows.

      Wednesday – 55,00,000 (Tamil & Telugu only)

      Thursday – 70,00,000 apprx

      Friday – 60,00,000 apprx

      Saturday – 75,00,000 apprx

      TOTAL – 2,60,00,000 apprx

      =========

Looking like 3.5 Cr nett by Sunday, which is decent but would not be enough to become a HIT.

My estimate of 30% shortfall due to pandemic put the real value of this collection to around 5Cr nett, which would have been a par collection.

Yes, Maara is fabulous. Madhavan is a delight and I wonder why he didn’t achieve the success he so deserved in the Hindi film industry despite such honest performances. Too good for it, maybe?
And if Tamil cinema is taking good care of its veterans, why should he devote time to anything else?
Srinath’s striking good looks often distract you from astonshing, well-captured frames. The woman has a majestic screen presence. So real and untampered.
Perhaps this is how you make films that are so magically detailed yet so entertaining, a feature that has been missing in many contemporary Hindi films off late, which fail to strike a chord between mainstream and ‘critic friendly’
I rant. Best to check this out. On an HD smart screen if possible to get a full blown experience. Quite a few beautiful moments.

  24. Though this will come with a huge asterisk, Master was the #1 movie in the world during the past weekend with an estimated gross box office of $23M Approx. The asterisk here is that these are unusual times, with absence of competition from Hollywood films which usually rule the charts.

This is the first time ever an Indian movie topped the worldwide charts, though there have been a couple of instances of movies reaching in top five. Baahubali: The Conclusion in April 2017 holds the record for biggest weekend for an Indian movie at $79M, but was only able to reach the third spot behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 $106M and The Fate of the Furious $94M.

Not this time. Master was able to beat a couple of Chinese movies led by A Little Red Flower and Hollywood movies Wonder Woman 1984 and Soul to take the top spot. Additionally it was number one movie in India, Sri Lanka, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Singapore, while entering top ten in Australia, New Zealand, Norway and Luxembourg during the weekend.

The Red was another Indian movie in the chart, at number tenth.

    The top movies in the world during 15-17 Jan. 2021 are as follow;

    Master – $23M
    A Little Red Flower – $11.75M
    Shock Wave 2 – $8M
    The Soul – $7.6M
    Wonder Woman 1984 – $7.4M
    Soul – $5.8M
    Wish Dragon – $5.6M
    Warm Hug – $4.7M
    Croods 2 – $4.24M
    The Red – $3.4M

“Salman Khan has strongest following in Rajasthan and CI but its not at the level of Vijay in Tamil Nadu. Shahrukh Khan is best in Kolkata but again not at the level of Vijay in Tamil Nadu. Also these areas where there is a certain amount of blind following for a certain star are nowhere near as big as Tamil Nadu in terms of collections.

This is not just the case today but earlier also as Amitabh Bachchan is probably the biggest superstar that India has seen but the level of stardom in his strongest area of Mumbai city was not at the level of a Rajnikant in Tamil Nadu.

In our industry the dynamics are different with different regions and tastes differ where the superstar plays a part but other factors also come in. If a superstar had the pull Vijay has in Tamil Nadu across the Hindi markets from North to East to Maharashtra you could release that film next week and it will be at allowed capacity houses across the board even in a pandemic. But this has never happened and probably never will as its much easier to hold that sort of stardom in one state but not across 10 or 12 states.”

    • Such blind worshipping and rabid following would perhaps make the likes of Rajnikanth and Vijay the biggest superstars in the world for their own respective limited fanbase, can’t say this is something to be proud of. Pathetic arguments like high price of popcorn & cappuccino does not hold ground when you consider the experience of watching a Tenet, Ford vs Ferrari or Bond 25 on laser Imax screens with dolby audio systems. Nor does it hold ground for the masses who’s hoot, clap & whistle at a Vijay, Prabhas or Salman entry on screen. High time the makers of Sooryavanshi & 83 stop acting like headless chickens & decide on a theatrical release. Long live cinema, long live the big screen!

A team of UP Police, in Mumbai to question makers of Mirzapur web series over an FIR filed in the Mirzapur district, has claimed that they have been denied necessary permission by the Mumbai Police to proceed with their investigation.

The team of three UP cops on Thursday said they have been trying to get the necessary permission from the DCP crime branch office in Andheri for the last two days, but whenever they go there, the DCP, who is the nodal officer, is not available.

Tired of waiting, the UP cops on Thursday went to Khar police station, took along a constable and decided to visit Farhan Akhtar’s place in Khar West to question him regarding the FIR.

Soon after, Mumbai police reached the spot and asked it’s UP counterparts to leave the office and take due permission before starting their investigation.

Speaking about the incident, a highly-placed source in Mumbai Police said, “A Mumbai police top official got to know that cops from UP have reached Farhan Akhtar’s place. Senior IPS officer asked local DCP and DCP asked a senior official at the Khar police station to look into the matter. A team of Khar police reached Farhan’s place and asked the UP police to immediately leave and come after taking necessary permission.”

The Mumbai Police is now investigating how and why a constable from the Khar police station was with UP cops when they went to Farhan Akhtar’s office.

    https://greatbong.net/2019/07/23/tirangaa-the-review/#comments

Finally there was Raj Kumar Sahaab playing Brigadier Suryadev Singh, the terror of desh-drohis, always two steps ahead of the baddies, and who has his dialogues well-thought out for all occasions. I remember during my on-campus undergraduate interview, I was asked “What are the things are you afraid of?” by the HR on the panel and I was this close to standing up and declaring, Raj Kumar style, with a cavalier toss of my head, ‘Na talwar ki dhaar se na goliyon ki bauchar se, bandah daarta hai to sirf parvar digaar se”. Such was the impact of that character on me and many others of the 90s.

And why not? Brigadier Suryadev Singh was a superhero before Marvel came along, the panache of Ironman with the patriotism of Captain America, the anger of Hulk with the fashion sense of Black Widow. The brigadier had supernatural powers, he could apparate out of thin air, Harry Potter style, when his name was mentioned, a power he described as “Hum kisi se bhi, kisi waqt bhi, kahin bhi mil sakte hain … hamara jab dil chahe”. He could hear everything, even when he was not in the room. He was the only one who when people watched him on TV, he watched them back through the screen. He wore clothes that would make Dil Ki Armaani aasoyon mein bahe gaye, including Madhuri Dixit type chokers in many of the scenes, whose colors change, but not the Indian flag at its center.
For one, there was Brigadier Suryadev Singh’s tricked out Ambassador car, which makes the Batmobile look like Basanti’s tanga. Even though it did not have automatic transmission, it had bomb detecting sensors fitted to its bottom, a red flashing button on the dashboard, and a retractable floor which would separate on a detection of a bomb, right over a manhole. The good brigadier is shown to have military technology that would make James Bond say “never say never again.” For one, the Brigadier’s dual-chamber pipe not only carried tobacco but also dynamite, providing him with a nicotine rush and his dushman with death. He carried around a remote control of what seems to be a Sonodyne TV used to control anything he wishes, and he had a secret Batcave-like lair with flashing lights on the panels, a bargain basement version of USS Enterprise in a basement.

Yes.. it’ll happen once the opposition is completely killed in next 5 years and then whatever the govt implements it’ll be accepted without any protests and voice. Give it some time, Rahul Gandhi and such voices will be gone from the scene.

The capacity rule change a few days ago means things changing as far as the release schedule is concerned. There was little hope of Sooryavanshi releasing before Radhe last weekend as there was almost a flat out no for an early release.

After the central government made the capacity change rule then the exhibitors (national chains) met the makers and it seems they may have persuaded the Sooryavanshi team for an Easter release. Although this is not 100% as its a fast cahnging scenario but now there is a much better chance of Sooryavanshi releasing before Radhe then there was last week.

It is not known yet exactly what the capacity rule changes will be and which state government will allow how much but exhibitors are pretty confident that it will be 100% by Easter as long as the pandemic situation keeps on its present trend and this is what gives Sooryavanshi a big chance to come before Radhe.

The Easter date (if it is to be) is a bit baffling as its best to come a few days earlier on the Sunday which is the day before Holi and you get that huge Holi benefit for a few days. If its 2nd April or 28th March (or even 27th which is Sat) it hardly makes a difference as far as period is concerned, its not as if the pandemic scenario will be different five days later so why miss out on a holiday period.

The other detail coming out is that 83 has been set out for a 25th June release. Now with Sooryavanshi we cant be sure which way it will swing but this date for 83 looks almost certain as this was the day that India won the World Cup in 1983 so the makers will feel they can get some mileage out of this. It can be said with confidence that 83 will release on 25th June.

Also the date of KFG Chapter 2 is set to be announced soon and hopefully that is not on one of these expected dates of Sooryavanshi and 83 as that will be mean back to the drawing board again.

More about heightened health consciousness. Many have learnt to do without many things like having maids and drivers, going to films and malls and attending functions in big groups besides planning holidays.

They’re all jam packed on a weekend and last time I checked, Master collected close to 100 Cr in TN alone despite 50% occupancy rule. So much for hesitancy. Pushpa Bector, Executive Director, DLF Retail, says, “Over the last few months, we are seeing a substantial increase in footfall during the festive time across all our malls in NCR. Last Sunday, DLF Mall of India witnessed a footfall of 45K (23% growth over last weekend), while the footfall at DLF Promenade was 27K. With stringent hygiene and safety protocols being followed at the malls, we’ve been able to win the trust of our consumers, which can be seen with the increase in footfall.”

The effects of placing vaccines over vitamins and antibiotics over antibodies via natural exposure to pathogens. Spic and span, posh & clean environments are the most dangerous immunosuppressants, not that anyone would advocate living in unhygienic slums. Yet the right amount of exposure to dirt, mud and pathogens from childhood is the best way to build a naturally responsive immune system. That being said I expect Europe to be much better by the summer. US cannot be predicted as there’s huge level of corruption and racism involved in testing, TPR, CFR as well as vaccination.

Now I have started to hear many in my circle get vaccinated and UK has definitely got this right but rest of the approach post July has been a joke. Less said about US the better. India given it’s size has done magnificent till date.
Taiwan, S.Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Australia and NZ are good models.
Perth recorded one case recently after 10 months and bang a snap lockdown. This thing should not be allowed to grow and expand, it is reeking havoc.

Unfortunately I know 3 cases now in my circle where people are going to hospital for something else and they are fine BUT 2 have died as they caught covid in hospital. It’s appalling tbh.

Now EU and UK were on collision course on Fri but things have calmed a bit as EU can’t read contracts sensibly.

As for India, years of having turmeric, garlic, ginger etc in the diet is paying off or the lockdowns have worked their magic.

As for cinemas eventually the ROW will catch up but it doesn’t seem like here in UK cinema is first thought, things like having live sports is more priority.

Some countries were ripe for covid – US, UK to name two. Being centric to financial markets, tourism, trade centres, historic hubs, travel hubs etc they were set to be hit hard. But poor government decisions and generally populations who are not used to following health advice we are where we are. Asian countries are just better set up mentally and physically to meet the challenges of covid head on.

In UK being a first born generation it’s easy for me to toggle between my roots and western society. I grow up listening to my elders, not only that I’m surrounded by them and it’s on me to keep them safe. Most our socialising is with family – 95% of it. The whites though is opposite. Mostly they socialising with friends in pubs, restaurants and bars. They are out of house once university arrives and rarely live again at home. Asians are less free so much more sensible in such times.
You throw in protests, violence, George Floyd there were other interferences for mostof the West. US elections too.

There was this wait and watch mentality here. It only hits home when something tragic actually happens. My doctor/nurse friends are astounded by peoples basic inability to follow guidance and on top of that the level of communication and decisions by government is pathetic.
You got singers holding private parties, big warehouses in North opening for sheesha sessions etc. The fines are paultry. People should be fined proportionately to earned income.
Australia and NZ as western countries go have done better but seriously they are remote relative to US and UK – so the comparison is dumb to begin with.

Its not that India’s had low cases. India’s daily testing per 1000 is 0.5 while the UKs at about 6 people/1000. India’s been successful in successfully saving lives though, and having a far lower CFR than the west. Might be the natural immune response, a younger average mean population, perhaps the BCG vaccination, the emphasis on Ayurveda and herbal diet and the early adoption of masks (well before the WHO advised on it) or perhaps a combination of all factors. IF 56% OF 20 million of Delhi’s population developed antibodies and yet the mortality due to covid is under 11K, it perhaps implies India has the largest group of asymptomatic infections in the world. Even the best health infrastructure state Kerala which continues to report high case load (due to better testing strategy) has a CFR as low as 0.42%.

In my community I don’t think we’ve been hit hard…parents generations are all from East Africa and grandparents all from India. Diets are all similar to past 20-30 years.

But I’m hearing good news about the AstraZeneca Oxford vaccine today. It potentially not only provides immunity but also protects you from passing it to others. That is potentially the blockbuster news on vaccine front.

UK is vaccinating fast. 3 people closest in my family (wife, parents) all vaccinated in past week. Wife is a key worker and needed it. Her workplace is a shambles and breeding ground where probably half the work force has tested positive.

India’s gonna take at least till mid 2022 to have about 25-30% of its population vaccinated with Oxford or Bharat Biotech. With low fatality rate, there’s also a tendency among the general population to avoid vaccination to the maximum possible extent. Something that’s slowed down the vaccination process here despite Serum Institute being the world’s largest manufacturer of Oxford covishield.
