  3. An IQ question: Does Drishyam require a sequel?

    • Why do we have Sequels only Super hero? Why not for a common man 🙂
I don’t understand Malayalam but it depends how they proceed from ending of first movie. Or it could be a different story like Munnabhai. But then you could possibly name it anything. Drishyam brings name recognition.

      • Not at all. My question is only with regard to the narrative stretch.
Does it warrant a sequel or not?

Most of all super-heroes are kiddish and stupid; and I care crap about that…

    • The trailer of Drishyam 2 introduces Georgekutty (Mohanlal) and his family. The family seems to have come out of the trauma of the events of the first film and made some significant progress in their personal lives. Georgekutty now owns a theatre, and he aspires to produce a movie. And his wife Rani (Meena) is not okay with the idea of her husband gambling their life’s savings on his dream. Instead, she would prefer to spend that money to get her daughter married. You know the regular middle-class drama. But, soon all their plans go up in smoke as they are pulled back into a police investigation. The people of the town say the boy who died was a friend of Georgekutty’s daughter. And everyone in the town starts talking. Georgekutty must first calm the nerves of his family before he begins to actually tackle the challenge that might wipe out his family’s peaceful existence.

“With Drishyam 2, we aim to take this legacy forward and accomplish a new cinematic milestone. Drishyam 2 isn’t just a good-versus-evil crime thriller. It is an immersive story about Georgekutty and his family and the emotional journey he goes through to save them, at any cost. Over the last few years, viewers have written in to us with so many theories. I am happy to say that we will now finally dispel all theories and answer all questions with the sequel,” Mohanlal said in a statement.

Mumbai Saga seems like a dumbed down version of an already dumb Shootout at Wadala. I have no idea who & why would someone wanna invest in an outdated, mediocre and unoriginal film maker like Sanjay Gupta whose neither good with scripts and nor a box office draw.

The trailer looked like a collage of rejected clips from Shootout at Wadala/Lokhandwala.
I find Gupta a very mediocre and egoistical filmmaker who doesn’t give credit where it’s due. As far as I remember, he claimed Zinda was an original film

      • At least Kaante, Zinda & SAL had an element of flair, innovative cinematography & sound design. SAW, Kaabil & now MS seem completely retrograde & outdated at every level from scripting to dialogs to action. Its astonishing how he gets A listers like Amitabh, Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Hrithik & John to repeatedly act in his films.

        Liked by 1 person

        • I think KAANTE remains the best in his weird/mediocre repertoire. He is a one-dimensional film-maker. KAANTE was good coz of the ensemble set of actors headed by Sanju, then AB, and the hilarious Mahesh Manjrekar! Obviously, it was a poor man’s take on RESERVOIR DOGS.

Tarantino himself praised KAANTE as one of his favorite remakes of his film!!

          —————-

Quentin Tarantino cited Kaante as his favourite among the many films that were heavily inspired by his work. He praised the film’s character-building for going beyond what he was able to do with Reservoir Dogs. Tarantino stated: “Here I am, watching a film that I’ve directed and then it goes into each character’s background. And I’m like, ‘Whoa’. For, I always write backgrounds and stuff and it always gets chopped off during the edit. And so I was amazed on seeing this. I felt, this isn’t Reservoir Dogs. But then it goes into the warehouse scene and I am like, ‘Wow, it’s back to Reservoir Dogs’. Isn’t it amazing!” He also praised Amitabh Bachchan’s performance.[7] Tarantino later screened Kaante at his New Beverly Cinema alongside Reservoir Dogs and City on Fire.

I’m no fan of the perverted old sadist Tarantino in the first place. His incoherent and often senseless films relishing on bloodbaths and graphical violence isn’t exactly my cup of tea. No surprise Gupta’s no different, at a much more mediocre level (:

One may have opinions on the Tarantino brand of cinema but theres no mistaking his universal love for movies. An unabashed, unpretentious movie geek he is. You can just listen to him go on and on about him ranting about B movies and Kung fu movies and TV shows from back in the day. A keen observer and a very sharp mind. One can attribute his love for an otherwise average Kaante and Abhay to his total respect for the craft

While the movie was taking time to get on floors, Saina biopic was launched with Shraddha kapoor (who looks much closer to Saina) who spent 2-3 weeks on training but felt its lot of physical effort so she backed out and they offered Pari last minute as movie was on floors, she took up the role as there was not much time to decide and in that way she lost the more closer to her biopic of Sania Mirza, who said now she can’t do Sania Mirza biopic.

But guess Mr. CAA has many fans here. Along with banging Shibani and coming to take a hike in the park without knowing the ABC of CAA and giving new life to the BUNTY AUR BUBLY scene, and getting rightly viciously trolled, it would make sense for him and his ilk to first read the amendment and then become a twitter-warrior.

Commendable as it maybe his body-building, it is accompanied with a very limited range in acting. [And I say this without any interest in his political inclination.] It might also help to exercise his brain as well.

Again, I have made it very clear that I consider FA mediocre actor irrespective of his political inclinations. I am not someone who is easily impressed with physical transformation. Yes, it might be physically imposing on him at this age to maintain discipline and work on one’s physicality. However, that’s the starting and ending point of his so-called ‘acting’ career. All that he has to talk for his career is his frog-voice and good looks.

However, with DCH and LAKSHYA, the great promise he showed as that new-age film-maker who would be the opposite of the immature idiocity of film-makers like K Jo ran aground with the DON films. Since then, he has disappointed me, not that my points matter at all!

I will stop at this…my point was only to exercise one’s brain as well along with the body …

    Rang De Basanti – Hit
    Delhi 6 – Flop

  31. Finally watched the trailer of CHEHRE. I am highly, highly suspicious that this is based on Agatha Christie’s Ten Little Niggers. [Ten Little Indians for the United States.]

The film adaptation was the Brit film AND THEN THERE WERE NONE released in 1945, which is a TRUE master-piece starring giants Barry Fitzgerald, Walter Huston and Louis Hayward. I watched this one 2 months back on a lark; wasn’t even aware of it. I dedicated a month to watching ONLY old Hollywood movies — which I prefer to Bollywood anytime of the day or night– from 1940 to 1970. This movie had giants like Barry Fitzgerald, Walter Huston (grand-kids Danny Huston and Angelia Huston) and Louis Hayward.

I might be completely wrong; but the similarities sound strong…and Rumy Jaffrey is another copy-cat in the mould of Sanjay Gupta, albeit with a better record than Gupta…

    • Abhishek has always been unlucky; he is a better actor but not as big a star as Hrithik Roshan. He literally took HR to the cleaners in the Sooraj film. AB Jr wasf fantastic in Ramu’s films. That’s where he belongs. He doesn’t belong to the HR world of women and some men’s lingerie fantasy. Everything has gone wrong for him. I feel very bad when third-class actors like Arjun Kapoor and John Abraham and Farhan Akthar get golden chances. But such is the way of life …

What can you say, when directors like ROM and DB opt for third-rate actors like Farhan and Arjun Kapoor?..

      Like

      • High point in Abhishek’s career as a star-actor was Guru (2007). But things went haywire for him after that. He needed author backed solo films like this Big Bull right after Guru. Instead, he got stuck with bad films from the better directors like ROM, AG and Mani Ratnam. And now Big Bull isnt even getting a theatrical release.

        Like

      • Better actor than HR is a farce & a fantasy of AB fans who’re unable to take Jr’s incompetence. Taking to a cleaners is how u define Dhoom 2, not some dumbed down Barjatya film whose title is a tongue twister. Papa’s boy gets overshadowed by even the likes of Uday Chopra & a wooden John Abraham in the Dhoom films. After Super 30 & War, even naming AB Jr & HR in the same sentence is a joke. He seems to have the same old conventional dialog delivery & mannerisms in Big Bull that he had in Sarkar & Guru which made him seem an unoriginal carbon copy version of his dad.

The trailer of 99 Songs is out. Produced by the Mozart of Madras, AR Rahman, 99 Songs marks the debut of its lead actors — Ehan Bhatt and Edilsy Vargas. The film has been directed by Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy.

The visuals of 99 Songs are striking, also thanks to its attractive main cast. Manisha Koirala makes a fleeting appearance in the promo. So far, 99 Songs seems like an entertaining, almost fantastical musical drama. The camera work and visual effects are solid. But the story seems a little jaded — that of a young artiste who falls, rises and seemingly finds his ultimate redemption in the ‘magic of music.’

The music, of course, sounds great, and with AR Rahman scoring it, that is not even surprising. What remains to be seen is if the magic that is promised in the trailer will translate itself effectively on screen.

Suspect there’s some deep level politics at work. Not a far fetched thing to say that the Hindi film industry is run primarily by camps and groupism and and the big guys like Johar have big fat egos that demand servility. Rahman must be paying a price for working on his own terms and set of principles.

He hasn’t done any Hindi film since Tamasha.

Check out his Hindi filmography since 2015. Count how few and obscure Hindi films he’s worked on.
Before that he had Tamasha, Rockstar, Highway, Raanjhana, Ek Deewana Tha, Raavan — All superb albums in the 2010s
Throughout the 90s and 2000s, he delivered one classic album after the other.
          There’s definitely something cooking.

        • So many comments about AR Rahman and not one talking about the real point. The real reason for ARR working less is coz of the royalty issue. Only producers and film makers which accepts to give royalty to ARR will sign him. I believe he made few exceptions and all but as a business decision, many big banners and producers don’t even try to share the profit with ARR. For example a production house like Dharma – more than Royalty it’s owning the total control over their products and use the music, songs anywhere and anytime without worrying about sharing profits with music directors. Only smaller producers and upcoming films are fine and they are more than happy to have ARR name attached to their project. For big banners, it doesn’t make much sense to share profits at this stage.

Second issue is that if Producer wants to work with another music house like T-series and they want 100% rights over the music and then they need to mention that we can’t give you 100% rights and you still need to pay Royalty to AR Rahman or music director and singer which is another mess. For example: Delhi 6 total rights belong to T-series and they went ahead and created Masakali 2.0 for Marjaavan and then independent song without consulting AR Rahman or singer Mohit Chauhan. They can’t do the same if they sign AR Rahman today and use the songs whenever they want.

So, it’s all about business decision and not trying to share profits.

I do believe AR Rahman is 100% correct but we’re are in the transitional phase and eventually it’ll happen.

Samething with SONU NIGAM singing so less songs in Bollywood!

        • Worst crime ever is having Shreya Ghoshal sing so little in recent times.

And if she sings, such forgettable trash.

        • @Master, great points. Didn’t even think about Royalty issue. That changes the equation completely and it has to be the biggest factor ARR not getting much work, i still think at the same time his songs have not been chartbuster recently.

Sonu Nigham is burning lots of bridges (right or wrong), it hurts you professionally in the end.
I agree with most of Sonu points, it does make sense on the surface.

Presenting Abhishek Bachchan as Vikram Batra in LOC Kargil!

  73. The most surprising part about Shershaah and which is not discussed is NOT Sid Malhotra in title role but the director’s choice.

From the trailer, it appears the movie is directed a newbie but actually he’s Tamil director who did good commercial hits (Don remake as Billa in Tamil) in previous decade and then nothing fruitful in past decade. Then suddenly a not-so happening Tamil director getting break for Hindi movie at this scale and then given chance by Karan Johar is very very unlikely chance. Usually southern directors are not given big productions in Hindi cinema unless they are remakes of their own or other southern movies. Then when their career is already on decline in Tamil region, it is unprecedented to get reins at this level. Very unlikely choice for an in-house production by Karan Johar!

    • to get away from nepo allegations 🙂 ..when I last saw the like/dislike view in Youtube, it was in 3:1 which is still very high.

ps – Now it is much better. (it was 15k/4.5k)

      • Nepo allegations are silly. There is no producer in Bollywood currently who has given more breaks to new directors than Karan Johar. He has launched 20 directors and now launching 14 more in 2020. All the noise is always on starcast but getting break as director in big production house is equally difficult.

Hopefully the movie is as air-tight as the trailer …

BTW, is Ranjit Tewari is the guy who directed AIRLIFT?

    • I think Airlift was directed by Menon.
Ranjit Tiwary is a new director….though he was assistant direcor in Mission Mangal i think?
He is also directing his next with Akshay – Mission Cindrella. Thats some confidence on him.

    • It was saddening to see Faisal not appear again after stealing the show in Mela (that sadly underrated film) with his subdued, understated style. After Gunda’s criticial revaluation, Mela ought to be restored to the pantheon. At least Faisal has come back with a film befitting Mela’s legacy unlike Aamir who has cowardly run away from its looming legacy.

      FAISAL KHAN MASS!!

Awful review. KRK is a billion times better. KrK is superb * billion compared to this joker.
