  1. Re:I find it interesting to note that the two films that have helped Kangana bag her trophy are both calculated hits on the liberal class.

It is easier to discern this pattern in Manikarnika, which is a film that says it in as many words: ‘O frustrated Anti-Nationals of India — what is your problem exactly?’

Ha ha ha ha ha …… truth comes out – Rani Laxmi Bai is Aunty National according to Ch###a liberals . Utha ley rey baaba inn imbeciles ko !!!!!

    • I mean what’s a Sreehari Nair article without a bit of nonsense? More than the whole politics aspect, I really liked how he described Kangana the actress, particularly in terms of mystique. There was this movie where she played Rekha in a bit role, it’s always made want her play Rekha or do one of Rekha’s films since.

    • The fact that a lousy scripted & hopelessly narrated Manikarnika with VFX from the 80s managed to win this mentally disturbed, self proclaimed legend a national award proves that depths to which Indian commercial cinema has crashed! Wait for the day when even Madagascar starts making better films while our stupid illiterate masses would continue whistling & queuing up for junk like Master & Sultan while we continue to orgasm on mediocrity like Bahubali.

Bahubali The Beginning, yes an outstanding achievement. Part 2 is trash, a run of the mill Telugu film with Sathyaraj doing what Bhramanandam does in every Telugu movie. Understand the difference before shooting your mouth off. Mahendra Bahubali’s intro scene in part 1 is a direct rip off from Simbaa’s birth scene fyi. And we all know Hamlet’s inspired countless films, although Hamlet itself has a bit of Mahabharata.

  3. If Aamir has to make a biopic, there’s nothing better than him playing Guru Dutt and play around cleverly with the “is life mirroring the movie” or “is the movie mirroring life” like Mank did. Shoot the film in black-and-white, make sure it surpasses lofty international standards. It’d be better if they went with Ismat Chugtai’s novel on him as it gives ample space to Geeta Dutt as well. Tabu or Vidya would be great as Geeta, and just to throw a bone to the gossip queens, he ought to cast Fatima as Waheeda Rehman ;). Man, oh man, imagining a scene of Geeta Dutt recording “Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam” when her own marriage was on the rocks as Guru Dutt’s obsession with Waheeda comes through or the film possibly ending with his death and the end credits rolling for yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaye. Boy oh boy, this would be good!!

    • Fatima has become too heavy to play Waheeda jee, Nusrat would be a better choice .

    • I doubt if Aamir will do the Guru Dutt biopic. Bhavna Talwar’s script isnt catering to the gossip mongering idea that Guru Dutt committed suicide because of Waheeda Rehman. As per her research Guru Dutt had got over his obsession with Waheeda and moved on in life. He committed suicide because he was suffering from undiagnosed Depression.

A movie about Depression will not sell in India. The box office prospect of such a film is pretty poor and i seriously doubt if Aamir wud do this.

      • I never said Guru Dutt committed suicide because of Waheeda, but that there’s enough drama and substance in his life for a very good film.

Hansal Mehta had also spoken about the comparisons earlier. He said, “Please don’t make unfair comparisons. There can be multiple tales on the same story. 9. Just out of curiosity: has there ever been any other major star in the Indian film industry who has headlined a hit like Badla in 2019 after the first big hit of Zanjeer in 73? NTR, Sivaji, MGR don’t seem to have done it afaik. Also, has anyone ever given an ATBB 26 years after their first ATBB like Salman did with Bajrangi?

I think even Amitabh would find it difficult to beat ANR’s record of starring in a hit 70 years into one’s career.

    Like

    • I don’t think so @Aman. Bachchan’s career is quite different in the sense of public perception! I have always said, Bachchan might carry a pan-Indian currency, but it is a double-edged sword since he won’t be perceived in the southern states. But actors like ANR or MGR, or Dr. Rajkumar, irrespective of their talent metrics, carry a superior advantage of language/regional chauvinism. They would actually out-shine Bachchan in their own states. Bachchan, unfortunately, faces a dichotomy.

      Like

      • Actually I ended up checking and my assumption turns out to be correct. MGR’s first film was in 1936 and he retired in 1977, his last film flopped. Rajkumar’s first film was Bhakta Kanappa in 1954 and his last in 2000. NTR’s first and last hits came with a gap of 43 years. The gap between Parasakti and Padayappa was 47 years.

After Amitabh however, there’s Chiranjeevi, Mammooty, Rajni, Kamal, Mohanlal, plenty of people who can do it.

Roohi did 20 cr and Mumbai Saga may not even get to that total. Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar and Saina are both washouts. Only Godzilla vs Kong has done average business (that too due to business mainly from AP and TN as per Boi).

Bunty Aur Babli 2 is already postponed. Read that Chehre may also get postponed. Looks like the upcoming big releases like Sooryavanshi, Radhe, Satyamev Jayate and Bell Bottom may also get postponed …

      • No o dnot think so. Even during Christmas / New Year, Hindi releases wouldn’t have done better.
Maharashtra was and still is a covid nightmare and so is Delhi, though Mumbai numbers makes it look infinitely safer. You take out these two states and we are talking about 50% business deficit. Things were better then but definitely a 10% difference at best, so not out of the woods.

Deferring the release is a bad but only choice. Also after Coolie No 1 or Lakshmi it is now clear that OTT is worst platform for movies which has escapist needs for single screen audience. So no wonder that big entertainers would wait, and rightly so.

Don’t see any big Hindi releases till end of May.

Where are the strongest critics of drone strikes, interventions, MNCs and even Barack Obama? Given how much of a free society the US is in terms of speech (much more than Europe), self reflection happens in spades.

Everyone knows these Anti-Asian crimes are happening due to the broad anti China sentiment (which stupidly fails to distinguish between China, Taiwan and Japan). Do we really want to go into how well India treats the North East or how North easterners are routinely insulted as Chinkis or?

    Like

    • So to break even, the film needs to gross at least 1000 crore? I think that’s fair, the Conclusion made 1700 crore, the Beginning made 650 crore.
To make an assumption, let’s say that RRR is as good as 2.0, a fairly mediocre movie but which still grossed 617 crore. That with a film facing numerous delays and postponement, a director whose last film was rejected (I), a Rajni who was a weakening box office force, Akshay in a 15 min role, no songs and lame release date. RRR has India’s most popular director, the Dussera week, two hugely popular Telugu stars, Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn. To boot, it’s a prim and proper masala film, which has never been a disaster for anyone unless Yashraj.
Rajamouli is no Victor, and the film will definitely break even, but will it break Bahubali is the million dollar question. No director who has made a hit of this level (Mother India, MeA, Sholay, HAHK) have been able to outdo their record. Let’s see if Rajamouli makes history with this one.

      Like

      • RRR may recover in south (but i doubt it in these Covid times). The Hindi version will need around 275-280 cr to break even. Dont see that happening. Not just Covid, its also clashing with Maidaan which is carrying excellent reports.

If they give sufficient space to Ajay Devgn, hindi belt may go for
it. Alia Bhatt is no Aishwarya Rai..Her Kalank did not work.
          Covid may play spoilsport.
I am expecting a good story and tight direction from Rajamouli. He is the actual star of RRR.
A solo hero like Prabhas would have a lot more pull than two heroes who are unknown in most part of the country.
It looks like a strained effort to surpass his own Baahubali series.

        • RRR will definitely do well in AP/Telengana. The Hindi belt price is too high at 140 cr. It may have worked in Pre-Covid times, but now its a big gamble. Its not that once the second wave subsides, the biggies will start doing 300 cr like in Pre-Covid times. It will take time for audience to come back to theaters in full flow.

I dont think any film will get remotely close to 300 cr nett this year, especially not RRR with 2 unknown heroes in the Hindi belt.

        Hopefully it will do well.

All the standard clichés like evil corporation, high school kids turning detectives, no concept of city, state country and so many other plot twits of convenience and stupidity . It was also very boring.
If this what Hollywood offers, I will take Rajmouli and his RRR any time.
P.S.- the Kong alike in Teesri Aankh was better than this one , even Jaani Dushman monster was more believable .

Rajamouli is India’s so called legend with lousy stinkers like Magadheera & Lousy Rathore to his credit, not to mention the disaster called Eega & the B grade angry birds visuals of Bahubali-The confusion. Rajamouli’s popularity merits equating him with the likes of Spielberg, Cameroon & Nolan and even naming this Tollywood pervert with his belly jingling heroines in the same breath is a joke!

No one is equating Spielberg, Cameron or Nolan with Rajamouli, but let me say this today, Avatar is utterly boring and completely stale if not for the technology, which has dated quite quickly. Maybe comparing visual quality of a film made on not even half the promotional budget of any of Hollywood’s trash. Rajamouli had more style, grandeur, vision and emotion in one film of his than any of these lousy Hollywood technicians have in their career.

Maybe Nolan ought to create one, at least one female character that is memorable at least till the end of his film.

Bollywood since the 70s has not had even a single commercially viable film maker who can exploit the big screen medium to his advantage (unless Johar, Barjatya and Shetty are you idea of good film-makers, I won’t be surprised if they are). Even Bollywood artists and film makers themselves confess the industry is bankrupt of ideas and good effective stories. Its no surprise that most of the content since the 90s is a partial or blatant copy from either the west and of late, the east as well. Even the tunes of thieves like Anu Malik and co were akin to blatant stealing. If you really are a genuine well wisher of commercial cinema, you’d rather hope for the industry to encourage some level of meritocracy and hire some good writers and film makers with original ideas instead of doing a mediocre copy/paste job.

Laxmii Is Huge On Satellite – Premieres Second To Bahubali 2
    Friday 02 April 2021 20.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Laxmii has had huge premiere on television despite coming six months after its digital premiere. The film had also proved to be the biggest HIT on OTT on paid platforms when released though the film was generally badmouthed by the media. It was said the film would have hardly done 100 crore nett in the theatres and that too on Diwali and the film is a total disaster but digital results were saying something else and now these insane television figures prove that the film has found a huge audience. These television numbers have come even after the huge negative media. .

Laxmii is second only to Bahubali – The Conclusion as far as televison premieres go with 2.5 crore plus impressions. It has beaten the other Akshay Kumar starrer to go over 2 crore impressions Housefull 4 but that film is a huge blockuster on satellite due to insane numbers after the premiere again and again. It remains to be seen whether Laxmii follows the Housefull 4 route but the blockbuster premiere pretty much confirms the success of the film with the audience. The top films on television of all time are as follows. The numbers are impressions which are the number of television sets viewing the film.

    1. Bahubali: The Conclusion – 2,60,54,00,000 (Sony)

    2. Laxmii – 2,51,44,000 (Star)

    3. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – 2,51,19,00,000 (Star)

    4. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 2,37,45,000 (Star)

    5. Housefull 4 – 2,15,42,000 (Star)

    6. Bahubali: The Beginning – 2,07,77,000 (Sony)

    7. Dhadak – 1,83,16,000 (Zee)

    8. Golmaal Again – 1,63,52,000 (Star)

    9. Total Dhamaal – 1,67,93,000 (Star

    10. 2.0 (Hindi) – 1,65,13,000 (Zee)

There was this article (https://boxofficeindia.com/report-details.php?articleid=6102) done about the probable box office numbers of Laxmii but now after these satellite results these are probably on the lower side. The other side could be that a lesser ratio of theatre going population saw the film on digital despite the good results so this audience has come when the film came on television. Either way the film has found a huge audience.

If this actor Duniya Vijay (fancy name for his low denominator illiterate fanbase) feels 100% theater capacity is the way to go forward during a pandemic peak, lord bless our film industry. Forget the available 50%, even finding a theater in the near future might become an impossible task if these guys have their way. I remember Bollywood clowns crying “save cinemas” last August and yet these cowards were the first one’s to chicken out from releasing tentpoles despite the pandemic being well in control during the winter months. While the fools from the southern industries intend to do the exact opposite, release as many films as possible despite the pandemic peak!

  43. As part of the new rules, a night curfew would be in place across the state from 8 pm to 7 am and a weekend lockdown will be effective from 8 pm on Friday to 7 am on Monday. The restrictions, which come into effect tomorrow (April 5), also include a ban on gatherings of five or more people throughout the day.

Shopping malls, bars, restaurants and other eateries will be open only for take-aways and parcels. While government offices will be allowed to function with only 50 per cent staff, private ones have been asked to shift to the work-from-home model.

Religious places, gymnasiums, amusement parks, indoor sports complexes, parks, playgrounds, beaches, salons and beauty parlours will remain closed to avoid crowding during the day.

Although theatres and drama complexes have been asked to keep their gates closed, film and television shoots are permitted, provided they ensure social distancing norms are adhered to. Political rallies have also been banned.

E-commerce and industrial operations, construction activities and farming have been given a nod.

No new restrictions have been placed on flights and trains, but public transport will run at 50 per cent capacity and violators will be fined.

Also, societies with five or more Covid cases will be declared containment zones and violations will lead to fines of up to Rs 10,000.

Subhash K Jha remembers Shashikala who passed away aged 88 on Sunday.

    Excerpts

I loved Shashikala as the trouble-maker in Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore’s marriage in Choti Bahu. Shashikala’s best-remembered role is as Leela the blackmailer in B R Chopra’s Gumrah. In this memorable film Shashikala was the woman who gets to know of Mala Sinha’s extra-marital affair and squeezes the damsel in distress out of every penny.

Shashikala’s idiocyncratic gesture of rotating a keychain in her finger while glibly talking money was a big hit in Gumrah. She won her richly deserved second Filmfare Award for best supporting actress in Gumrah.

Shashikala was never short of her work. But somewhere as she grew older she got tired of playing variations of the villain. She became spiritual, joined Mother Teresa’s organisation and perhaps atoned for all the artificial sins in her film.

Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan, in Bengal to campaign on behalf of Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress, came out guns blazing at her first press conference, reminding voters that Ms Banerjee was “fighting to preserve the democratic right of every Bengali” and warning rival political parties – she did not name any – against “hijacking my religion… democratic rights”.
“I have the utmost love and respect for Mamataji – a single woman fighting against all atrocities… a single woman fighting against everyone else. She has a broken leg, but nothing is going to stop her,” Ms Bachchan, a Bengali by birth, and a four-term Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh, said.

“Mamataji is fighting to preserve the democratic right of every Bengali,” she said.

Ms Bachchan also issued a veiled warning to the BJP over its campaign strategy – widely seen as a vicious and deeply polarising attack that referred to Ms Banerjee as “anti-Hindu” and someone who appeases Pakistanis and Muslims, and changed her traditional honorific of ‘didi’ to ‘begum’

“I want to say… do not hijack my religion from me and do not hijack my democratic rights from me. And when I say me… I mean the people. I represent all the people,” Ms Bachchan said.

Listed as a ‘star campaigner’, Ms Bachchan’s presence comes after a promise from party boss Akhilesh Yadav to Mamata Banerjee – that his party would campaign for her in this election.

Her presence also underlines Ms Banerjee’s plan to take on a ruthless BJP poll machine – to stitch together a pan-India working alliance of non-BJP parties, for this and other elections.

Jaya Bachchan will begin with a campaign for three-time Tollygunge MLA Aroop Biswas, who faces Union Minister Babul Supriyo in defence of his seat.

Center is providing all the benefits to Ayurvedic doctors who can open their own clinics and treat any patients and make life difficult for fresh MBBS graduates to survive. After working for so long, they are earning less a beginner software engineer who completes a course in 6 months. You are lowering the value of medical doctors and increasing the ayurvedic medicine further and the society will know its pain after a decade or two. First they clubbed medical docs and Ayurvedic docs one and same and recently there is plan to allow Ayurvedic doctors to do surgery as well and there was huge protest but it won’t matter and they will get approval. Nothing against ayurvedic medicine but clubbing them equal to medical doctors is wrong at so many levels!

As it is, many highly educated Indians trust ayurvedic and homeopathic along with other indigenous ones as alternate avenues. And nowadays there are many substandard medical colleges which take huge donations churning out substandard doctors. And we read about negligence and indifferent treatments given. People go through google and self medicate! Or advice qualified doctors.

Ayurveda is more about prevention than cure. An ayurvedic lifestyle is the kind that humanity desperately needs in these times of climate change and global warming. Ayurveda is more in tune with “Terrain Theory” of how to prevent disease and how to make sure the terrain does not act as a conducive environment for germs and disease. However with rampant urbanisation & uncontrolled population leading to urban migration and haphazard unplanned development, disease and immune compromising is an inevitability that requires precise allopath treatments.

Hopefully Sooryavanshi and 83 will be able to release by Diwali/Christmas time. Seriously doubt if Prithviraj or LSC will be keeping those dates now. On the other hand a lot of biggies may now release in 2022, making that an interesting year from beginning to end.

    • Prithviraj at least has completed its shoot. So it can release after the second wave of Covid subsides. LSC still has one long schedule left to shoot, which may only happen after this second wave subsides. No way is LSC releasing in 2021. Akshay will probably get his first HGOTY in 2021 with Sooryavanshi.

        • I think the Bollywood Superstars have shown the right attitude of grabbing and doing as much work as possible over these Covid times, even when some of their films are indefinitely delayed.

SRK has started shooting Pathan and will do Atlee’s film next. Salman completed Antim and has started Tiger 3. Ranveer has almost completed Shetty’s Cirkus. Ranbir completed Shamsheera and his Brahmastra is also almost done. He is set to work in 2 more films this year. Akshay the workhorse has already completed his nth film. Only Aamir has been stuck shooting for LSC for a long time, but then its how he works. Prabhas has completed Radhe Shyam, shooting Adipurush now and will be doing Salaar and Nag Ashwin’s next.

So even if some big films have not released, the film industry has been bracing itself with a good lineup. So sooner or later they will be able to lure the audience back to theaters once Covid goes away. If a Radhe or a Sooryavanshi flops, it wont matter much in the long run.

Criticism of the establishment is always there in democracy. Whether it is congress, UPA, BJP or MVA. There is no danger when people can criticise. The danger is when people stop criticising.
Criticism in the form of elections put an end to emergency. Hazare brought down UPA. That was possible because the ruling party just accepted defeat and moved away unlike what happened in Myanmar or in some coup infested countries.
And Putin gifted himself two more terms and so is xi. They have turned into monarchies.
India and America and democratic countries in europe and other countries believe in democracy, criticism of establishment when necessary to keep the government on its toes. Of course in some democracies opposition puts a break on development for selfish reasons which is the weak spot of democracy. But overall democracy is better than other cracies.

A lot of pretentious clowns have tried their hand at what they called comedy (running and farting around in Priyadarshan, David Dhawan & Sajid Khan films) but 2 of Aamir Khan’s performances in AAA & 3 Idiots would stand out for me as the best comic performances by a male lead in the last 30 years.

    • This is an overstatement and you are overrating Aamir here. He is mostly a competent star actor who labors a lot to get it right and mostly does so. Doesnt make him the greatest, but his labor does not show up as labored performances to his credit. His main strength is script selection, which also is not a natural talent but learnt through time and mistakes.

Here is what he said himself:

He said, ‘After Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, I signed about eight or nine films on the basis of stories as the directors were all new and unknown at that time. These films started bombing and I was called ‘one film wonder’ by the media. My career was sinking. It felt like I was in a quicksand. I was very unhappy. I used to come home and cry.’ Earlier, in an interview with a news portal, the actor shared that he found himself trapped among people he couldn’t gel with. He said that he felt he was working with people he couldn’t connect with, and didn’t know how to get out of that situation. He also revealed since he had committed to some films, he couldn’t have gotten out of doing them. While recollecting those days, he shared he was unhappy and it was during that ‘traumatic’ phase, he made a promise to himself – to not do a film till he was satisfied with the script.

      • In the first 5 years (1988-1993), Aamir had actually 15 film releases. Out of these QSQT, Dil, HHRPK and DHKMN were box office Hits, while JJWS was Average. Raakh was a box office flop, but won National Awards. The rest 9 films were neither here nor there and could have been averted. But those days films were signed with only a story in place (not a bound script), so perhaps his script selection sense cant be blamed. It was he who started demanding a bound script and then decided to do one film at a time to avoid the mistakes of his early career.

Anyways, new age stars like Ranbir/Ranveer have done 15 films each in their first decade put together, forget 5 years. How times change.

In case of Rocky, it is longstanding friendship between them. Rocky is a good human being at heart and quite forgiving. **Edited on request of parties**. But he is a blind modi bhakt and that makes him hate everyone who criticise modi in any way. It is not a straightforward criticism but mocking which becomes childish. And even the well balanced AnJo encourages that every time. Modi binds them all. While the so called liberals dont have one god to defend except their liberal ideas. Why it has become selective in their case? Because modi bhakts will never forgive a liberal even if that liberal accepts the faults of other liberal leaders. Modi bhakts want unconditional devotion to modi and his minions . Modi is a human being and a human being is not always right. And his minions do most damage by overdoing. And modi does not criticise them or admonish them. You saw what happenend with Sushma Swaraj. Modi is criticised when he wished well a covid struck Imran Khan.
And Mamata of WB is no saint either. She needed this treatment because it is this kind of treatment given by her followers to the opposition parties.
About congress, it is too confused and too scattered. There is too much democracy in thier organisation and that is harming them politically. But it is always better to have too much democracy than too little even if it does not give them political power. They are the only ones who can be called opposition though some of them have become too soft and pliable. The G23 is forgetting that producing Indira Gandhis is not a child’s play or a video game.
    Now coming to the blog.
That is why a Shivaay is a refreshing change because of straightforwardness in his comments and of course Shivaay may also make some sweeping statements but that can be called out in a straightforward manner. His language is sharp but never vulgar. He may mock but in a straightforward manner. So is Naveen who is always decent even when dealing with his adversaries.

When i visit this blog these days, i find most active members like Z, AnJo, Rocky, etc talking mostly about politics and all other stuff than films.

As for those who indulge in constant criticism and sarcasm, its more like venting out personal frustrations imo. That too should not be done/allowed beyond a point.

Anyways, I visit this blog a lot less than before. Not only because Aamir is on a long break, but mainly because of never-ending politics, criticism and sarcasm that i feel has pulled down this blog. The box-office madness may have been made irrelevant by Covid, but at least that was pertaining to films.

    • @Sanjana:

Firstly, thank you for writing what you honestly felt. I didn’t expect this from you; in the sense, not that you are criticizing me or Rocky: But you have fallen into the trap that folks like alphabets have been doing for years.

I definitely do not want to talk for Rocky; he is capable of answering himself. The disgusting statement by Z naming this blog as filled with ‘Modi Bhakts’ and unless you are one of them, you will be abused is as horrific as it can get. And I say this with a pained heart.

Here’s the deal – this ‘so-called’ harking back to days when Satyam was active is a red-herring laid out by Z. Since you are a search-engine expert, please look at the debates between Satyam and Z when Z was debating in utterly bad faith when it came to the difference between AB and SRK’s stardom. The same duplicity is now being applied to me and Rocky – Satyam is a ‘bhakt’ of AB while An Jo and Rocky are ‘bhakts’ of Modi – sorry, ‘blind bhakts.’

What I abhor is the double standards and selective wisdom of people. To think that I will endorse anything that Modi does is the biggest trick certain folks can pull off to pull us down. I have NEVER hesitated to call DT as a racist; but I have praised him to have the balls to take on and call Pakistani ‘administration’ for what it is! I might like Modi’s sincerity toward his work and the seriousness with which he approaches the country’s problems: But I have never implied that his or his party’s work is gospel and Japanese-efficient. I am the one who said Nirmala Seetharaman is the WORST finance minister this country has had and Modi needs to check his head when allocating port-folios. It applies to his horrible decision of holding election rallies as well. The idea of demonetization was good, but horrible execution is what will go on to live in history.

From my point, I don’t care if it is Rahul Gandhi or XYZ or whoever who is leading the country, as far as they do the job, I am happy. If you are seeing the kind of tweets, the level of intelligence and arrogance RG is displaying, your blood would boil. You want me to keep quiet when RG says there’s no democracy in India and the international papers latch on to it? Where is the effing data? Does anybody ask him the follow-up question?

Coming to the fakery of Z, what he does is just put in blanket statements; no data – nothing. ‘Things were good at that time; things are bad now’ crap. I am an engineer by profession and I need data – not some badly written statements. Tell me, what was wrong with what Rocky said? If Z was all that ‘pure’, why would he add a qualifier, ‘Take note Kangana’? He could have just ended with ‘ Sonu is doing a fine job.’ And when Rocky replies that certain ‘broad-minded’ folks also need to take notice, what is wrong? After all, Z is a proud ‘citizen’ of these United States. So be ballsy and accept Charlie Hebdo or insignificants like me or Rocky!

When CRPF forces are killed, how many celebrities tweeted? But they have enough time to tweet about George Floyd eh? If these double standards aren’t called out, well fine. When we see/read such things and see the same thing happening on the blog, we respond. There’s nothing shocking about it.

There’s no hatred or anything toward Z or anyone here; they are more than welcome to oppose my views. In fact, I would love that but if they come without any duplicity: Else, I am going to take them on.

In regards to Kangana, I am in full support of folks here who feel she should really hold her horses. But then, whatever it might be, she isn’t a criminal! Getting her house demolished when she is on a plane — how would this be a ‘negligible’ thing for some folks here? The folks who are bothered by her twitter, kindly file a case against her! But just for making ludicrous statements, it is a ‘light’ case on this blog for certain folks that a person’s house is demolished!!!

I don’t have much to say. Munna, upto you to retain or delete.

Now I can say it with firm belief that intelligent people from all walks of life, renowned scientists too, even if they are earning big abroad but now they are eager and happy to come back and settle India for even lesser incomes,” he said.

So me pointing out SRK had more to do with Mohabattain and K3G being hits due to SRK (While satyam claiming AB) is bad faith.

Go look up boxoffice collection from that timeframe of SRK films vs. AB and you decide who was a bigger star.

It would be like me saying srk is a bigger box office puller than aamir or akshay right now, which is just not true. There is DATA.

The guy had the biggest blockbuster of the year a few months ago and had a record breaking initial in Mission Kashmir to follow up. If at all anything, HRs presence in the film added much more box office value than ABs at that point in time. Mission Kashmir had a struggling Sanjay Dutt, a failed commercial director and yet opened bigger than an SRK/AB/Aishwarya starrer directed by Adi Chopra. No mean feat!

PS : All the above mentioned movies barring a somewhat watchable Mission Kashmir are completely bogus and the piles of poop that deserve to be flushed down the drain half a dozen time before someone has the audacity to make them.

AB two biggest hits during those times had SRK in it, than that kind of gives you the picture, while SRK was having hits left/right during that time frame. You can’t say AB sawa sawa made K3G hit. I remember i had put up an argument at that point, than does that mean Aishwariya kajrare made Bunty or Bubbli a hit?

Same thing with AB being in TOH, maybe helps to some point but Aamir was doing very well on his own.

The only thing that pissed me off was when Z said that people are leaving the blog because of so-called ‘blind-bhakts’ and only people who praise NM get precedence and that ‘bhakts’ are responsible for driving away certain folks. The people who left this blog, they can ALWAYS ignore people that have different ideologies. I myself used to get rattled a couple of years back when all that people were discussing here were first day first show/BO collections. I even commented on that somewhere and Master replied that there’s a reason why there’s a BO thread. He was absolutely right. From then on, I decided to ignore and wrote only when I felt strongly about something.

          I don’t comment on BO because –

          a) I am not interested
          b) I have neither the time nor the energy to dive-deep into BO analysis like Gujju Boy or Saket or Master or Naveen …

So I just kept myself away from those threads hardly contributing anything …

      • Z, I think the point is SRK’s two biggest hits had Bachchan in a prominent role. Surely, that cannot be coincidence?

Ultimately, it’s hard to determine how much of a factor Bachchan was, in driving these films. But to deny his value completely is absurd. SRK vs Amitabh in both films added to the hype for sure. Plus, Amitabh had Baghban, Aankhen, Kaante, Black, Sarkar, Khakee (all films where he was the lead). Even Bunty Aur Babli had a lot to do with him.

PS: Of course, Kajra Re helped Bunty Aur Babli. It’s the most well known and remembered part of that film today (because of the offscreen connect).

        • Agree, AB had some to do with it but SRK/Amrish Puri combination in DDLJ did lot better than Mohabattain and K3G. My argument was against the thought process of that AB was THE MAIN reason behind mohabattain and K3G success.

Ultimately, it’s the movie that drives it, having stars elevates boxoffice collection.

SRK/AB combination did add hype to mohabattain, not sure about K3G, for K3G it was more of combination of so many.

Once again, mis-leading and there have been discussion following this lie. I am not saying you lied Marcus, but this lie wasn’t stopped.

The discussions that took place between Satyam and Z where Satyam clearly called out that these were in bad faith was regarding equating SRK’s stardom at his peak versus Bachchan’s at his peak and the longevity of their careers.

In ANY film industry of this world, it is the youth who call shots. This is one of the biggest insults to Satyam that he would say that 58 year old AB, coming from a string of flops, had a greater pull for the audience than SRK or HR at their peak. AB’ s presence and performance might have added, but NEVER can they be considered the main pull. That he managed to retain his OWN at his ag — against the ‘might of ‘youth’ like H — in films like BAGHBAN in 2003 where he could hold the camera stiff for a freaking 10 minutes in the climactic speech is something to be seen if any other Hindi film actor from the Khans or whoever can accomplish. [The only other actor I have seen in the commercial genre is Manoj If we were going to have debates, I hope I haven’t contributed to them. I hope.

The debates were about SRK being the same as AB say in 1978 or even his last one-man-vehicle SHARAABI.

        • Bachchan contributes to Mohabbatein, K3G and TOH. Whenever you pit a major star of yesteryear vs one of today you get bigger hype.
Remember it’s like a fantasy scenario. Whenever we watch sport we are always comparing today’s to yesterday’s – that what if Federer played Bjorg etc or Schumacher raced against Senna etc. You can only play it out on a video game. But in cinema it’s possible to see it onscreen. It’s easy to cut through generations.
Both my parents are Bachchan, 70s stars fans. Both watched all of SRK from KKHH to CE.
Now the possibility of watching SRK in Mohabbatein pitted against Amrish Puri or Big B would drive more interest? The latter is once in a lifetime moment possibly – all that is not all SRK’s credit, it’s Bachchan’s too.
In 5 years time if Aryan is a star and SRK is pitted with him – SRK whatever his standing is, he’s playing a bigger role in opening than if practically any other star is doing his role.
          It’s not saying it’s a Bachchan film.

If this wasn’t the case we are making the insinuation there is no star system at play. What’s the point of having Bachchan in first place.

Look at YRF – how they deployed tactics for TOH release. They frigging wrote some kind of scroll inviting people to watch Bachchan and Aamir for first time. They went to lengths with exhibitors to keep ticket prices high.

        • Also it is was SRK vs Puri in Mohabbatein it would be like 90/10 credit split. The more legacy bound/historic star the older role is the higher the credit for that role. If it was Dilip Kumar I’m sure people would have huge interest probably at that time close to what Bachchan could pent up. This was Bachchan with flops post comeback but wasn’t it Bachchan of KBC too?
If you counted Bachchan’s hits you wouldn’t ‘not’ count Mohabbatein and K3G.

Just like if you counted Akshay’s hits you would count Khakee even though he is not the lead but is a younger star in the movie.

@AnJo – This is a different ballgame altogether and I dont have much to say about this. However, i gathered from your earlier post that the debate was about AB’s comeback films.

AB had his say in films like Mohabbatein, K3G and TOH. He had other hits in early 2000s and he still delivers significant hits like Badla as late as in 2019. He wud have got his share of credit if TOH had lived to its expectations and had become a big grosser. It did 50 cr day one and ended at 150 cr, which made it the highest grossing flop in recent times. And AB had something to do with this feat too. The movie’s USP was having AB and AK together in a film for the first time. The entire marketing was centered around it.

Panic over AstraZeneca’s shot is overblown. It could undermine efforts to end the pandemic.

“The risk of dying in an air crash is just astronomically higher than the risk of clotting after the vaccine dose, and yet we all get on a plane without a second thought,” Johan Bester, director of bioethics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Medicine, told Insider.

“All that people heard was: AstraZeneca’s vaccine can kill you because of blood clots,” Art Caplan, a bioethicist at New York University, told Insider, referring to the Wednesday announcement. “They’re not watching the fine tuning and the careful recommendations.”

“There is no proof that the AstraZeneca vaccine leads to blood clots,” Todd Ellerin, director of infectious diseases at South Shore Health in Massachusetts, told Insider. “Association is not the same as causation.”

Vakeel Saab Takes Bumper Opening In Andhra :

“The film may take an opening of around 30 crore nett or even higher across India on day one which will be the highest for a Telugu for quite some time and if it gets to 35 crore nett then it would be the highest opening in India post the pandemic beating the Tamil film Master.”

Simply extraordinary! Seems like Telugu & Tamil markets have single handedly decided to revive the exhibition business & shatter through the roof.

Amazing how mainstream Telugu & Tamil films manage 50-70% of the lifetime collection of mainstream Hindi films despite Hindi having 5x the number of Telugu & Tamil speakers across India (dubbed versions not included). Big Telugu hits record 1-1.5 Cr footfall while commercial Hindi film makers go bonkers over 3 Cr pan India footfall when the maximum potential actually lies upto 5-6 Cr viewership (as Bahubali 2 proved in Hindi with over 5 Cr footfall).

Roohi has collected a little over 22 crore nett till date and probably has chances of a 25 crore nett finish if cinemas remain open in most of the places where they are open now as there will be very few releases now.

The film saw a drop in collections in week two and week three as it faced competition from Mumbai Saga and and Godzilla Vs Kong but week four will hold better and it could have a long run on low collections if most cinemas remain open especially the Delhi / UP belt.

The 29-year-old former executive director of Reliance Capital Ltd in a series of tweets lambasted the new semi-lockdown rules hurting small businesses and daily wage earners.

“Professional ‘actors’ can continue shooting their films. Professional ‘cricketers’ can play their sport late into the night. Professional ‘politicians’ can continue their rallies with masses of people. But YOUR business or work is not ESSENTIAL. Still don’t get it?” he said in a tweet. He had in the past too voiced opposition to such restrictions and retweeted videos and comments denouncing them.

    https://indianexpress.com/article/business/anmol-ambani-covid-lockdown-7263033/

“What does essential even mean? EACH INDIVIDUALS WORK IS ESSENTIAL TO THEM,” he said tweeting with hashtag #scamdemic. Lockdowns, he said, are key in “continuing and enabling greatest wealth transfer in human history.” “The mistake is that the people think this is simply inefficient governance. it’s not. It’s a coordinated, thought out set of policies designed to enable a new world order to be brought in,” he said.

The main target audience for this film is Maharashtra/Karnataka/Nizam belt (I doubt the north would be much interested in this unlike Dirty Picture as this does not have the sleaze factor) and hence postponement is the right call for now.

  100. Watching Pakeezah on Prime. The art direction is superb. And won some award too. The songs are so good and I am surprised it did not win an award for music though nominated. Raaj Kumar looked good and less eccentric for a change.

Pakeezah is India’s first color film in Cinemascope and Meena Kumari’s most awaited film and has since acquired major cult status as well. Tajdar Amrohi shares: “When the shooting of Pakeezah resumed in 1969, the first song shot was “Mausam Hai Ashiqana” with this song Meena Kumari set a new fashion trend of girls wearing Lungi.

Indian Film Critic Bhavana Soumaya says “Pakeezah is just like poetry on celluloid. I cannot imagine anybody else in this movie except Meena Kumari. Pakeezah’s music is cited as one of the finest classical album in the history of Hindi cinema and was one of the best-selling Bollywood albums of the 1970s.

“I have lived with Pakeezah almost as long as I lived with its creator … to Meena Kumari Pakeezah means a performance. A great performance? That is not for me to say: that is for people to decide. For me to say is this: it is a performance to deliver which I have, as an actress, had to delve deeper into the secret wells of being than any actor or actress normally delves in the process of his or her professional work.”[6]
    —Meena Kumari about Pakeezah (1972)
Pakeezah was the inaugural film telecast by Doordarshan, India’s state-owned television station, when it began broadcasting from Amritsar in Punjab in the early 1970s. It was especially beamed towards Lahore nearby, in Pakistan. Thousands flocked to Lahore, from as far as Karachi, hundreds of miles away, to see Pakeezah. It was a flood. The crowds stampeded the streets of Lahore to get to the television screens placed at strategic points on virtually every street corner.
    Wiki.

And Lata as the singer is the soul of Pakeezah.

That being said, since Maharashtra, Delhi/UP, Gujarat have suffered a lot more compared to TN/AP/Telangana its obvious the recovery for Hindi cinema would be a lot longer and uncertain. I’m all for tried & tested vaccines but at this juncture none of us know the safety and efficacy of any of the candidates to an adequate degree. Vaccination always has to be a public choice at this point in time (perhaps the only aspect where the GOI got it right) as individuals who’re immunocompromised or prone to cytokine storms or on other diabetic drugs/chemotherapy etc. are prone to serious side effects from the safest vaccines. And extend this into an enclosed environment like a theatre.

I think it’s pretty selfish to dump the entire pandemic onto your healthcare system by letting people roam around like nothing is going on. Nurses and doctors will eventually be shattered, catching the virus and you’re entire healthcare system will be finished!

Every country is trying to find the right balance ie. Lifting restrictions to the extent the healthcare system can function. Once it becomes overwhelmed the only solution is lockdown. Clearly vaccines are working and yes everyone is fully aware you can’t lockdown forever but it’s being asked of everyone to put in an effort rather than dump the entire trouble onto healthcare system – which would be horrific for everyone.

        • Compared to India in size and population, UK is small and can be managed well. Even India can be managed if each state, each district, each panchayat is made accountable and given incentives. India always failed to build more government hospitals and mushrooming private hospitals made government complacent. This is not the last pandemic we may have to face.

Lockdown is painful for women who cook to feed families and manage grocery and other shopping for their families including yours faithfully. We have to stretch groceries, vegetables , fruits etc. to last until lockdown is lifted. As everybody is at home, they feel hungry and thirsty all the time and consume more than what usually they do when they are not at home.

As for exercise, we use vehicles to go to theatres and malls, We can exercise at home as well and do yoga which most of us do.

Only worry is kids not attending schools and missing school life. Online education can never compensate off line education.
And going to office is necessary in some cases. You cannot do everything with a computer.

We need non essential shops also for maintenance purposes and for some important needs and wants. Every shop serves some purpose except maybe a pawn shop or a liquor shop.

Nothing is permanent. Even lockdowns. The second lockdown seems to be much more liberal and less stringent as ruling parties learnt lessons which caused enormous human suffering and economic damage. Few industrialists getting rich and share markets flourishing cannot mask the real suffering endured by the shopkeepers, laid off private employees and labourers. Beggars, homeless and destitutes are undocumented people who must be facing death on everyday basis.

I wouldn’t compare UK with India – it’s impossible. Also India overall has done spectacular if looking at numbers only. UK is amongst the top 10 worst performers! Like the Razzie to India’s Oscar!

        • Exactly why India could never afford lockdowns in the first place. The containment after effects cannot be worse than the disease. And after 14 months of the pandemic if excuses such as low bed count or high positivity rates are being given, its a serious lapse in management. No one suggested the center to reopen flights & trains at 100% or allow all mandis & vegetable markets to run amok. Anti farm law protests, election rallies, dharnas, kumbh melas etc are the REAL reason for the spike. Not some scapegoats like outdoor cricket stadiums, theaters or cafes & restaurants that are anyways running at well under 50% for 10 months now!

    2 Decades of Hrithik Roshan
    —————————–
    FIRST DECADE (2000-2009):
    Total Films – 15
    Hits (6) – KNPH, K3G, KMG, Krrish, D2, JA
Averages (3) – Fiza, MK, Lakshya
    —————————–
    SECOND DECADE (2010-2019):
    Total Films – 10
Hits (6) – ZNMD, Agneepath, K3, Bang Bang, Super 30, War
    Averages (1) – Kaabil
    —————————–

I will pick the second decade over first (although its commercially less sucessful), mainly because of less influence from his regressive Papa Roshan.

And wud pick Lakshya from the first decade and Super 30 from the second decade as most watchable films of HR’s sparse filmography.

    Like

    • Must add that he seems to be well set for at least the half of his third decade with films like Vikram Vedha remake, Fighter, Krrish sequel and War sequel. These shud be 5 easy hits for him in the next 5 years or so.

      Like

      • Frankly Lakshya, S30 & ZNMD are the only good films he’s done in my books (still more good films than SRKs & Salman’s entire filmography but that’s a different debate). Lakshya is an underrated technical masterpiece that’s gonna age like fine wine, I’m sure that would have been a blockbuster if released 10 years later in the multiplex era with 30 mins of editing. As a performance however, S30 & his cameo in Luck by Chance stand out for me for his ease & effortlessness that’s been missing for a large part of the 2nd decade.

        • HR is not a good actor in my books. He comes up with heavily labored ‘performances’ in the roles that require acting to some extent and it shows. He is more natural doing stunts/action and in D2/War/BB kind of films.

If Lakshya was edited well, it wud have been a hit even when it released. Anyways, i feel ZNMD is the only movie that will have a long shelf life out of all the 25 films he has done till now.

His performances might be laboured (alot so in the initial part of his career) but he is also a hell of a convincing performer.
Having said that I enjoy watching him in his non-action roles (Kaabil was an exception)

        • He’s a exceptional performer when going through the motions and going easy on the camera like he was in S30 & Luck by Chance, first half of ZNMD as well as War & major portions of Lakshya. Its when he’s trying too hard that he gets awkward like in Guzaarish, Agneepath or those Krrish films. But barring Swades, CDI and his first 3-4 films, SRKs been hamming in every role he’s done imo.

          Like

        • @Marcus : “He is more natural doing stunts/action and in D2/War/BB kind of films.” – Action roles require a specific type of act, one that involves body language, swag & charasmatic screen presence. Its not everyone’s ball game. The exact reason why Arnold & Sylvester gained universal fame, why Tom Cruise is adored & why SRK was completely out of place in the 2 Don films. HR is perhaps the best in Hindi cinema when it comes to acting in swanky urban action entertainers while Tiger despite being a better stuntman, can never match upto that level of alpha. Hindi cinema however does not have the writers & directors to harness HRs potential as an urban action superstar and hence he’s forced to work with mediocre’s like Sid Anand & Sanjay Gadhvi while Tiger’s stuck with Ahmed Khan. Neeraj Pandey is one exception here who gave the action hero in Akshay his best action film in Baby. My idea of a perfect big screen Hindi film remains a Tenet remake with HR & Tiger playing John & Pattinson with Pandey at the helm 😉

Salman has Bajrangi, Phir Milenge, Khamoshi, HDDCS and AAA.

Yes, both Shah Rukh and Salman have better films than Hrithik.

          Like

        • A film that’s rated 7.6 on IMDB with 26,000+ votes is hardly Mani Ratnam’s worst film. In fact, Mani Ratnam’s worst film would still be better than Papa and Beta Roshan’s best film. That Dil Se enjoys a restored reputation today is no secret and I’m sure there are plenty of Dil Se fans on this blog too.

I’m game enough to admit Phir Milenge is a straight remake and even if you remove HDDCS, Salman still has 3 good fillms, just as many as Hrithik does. Your point was about them not having any good films (an exaggeration acceptable next to Aamir but next to Hrithik is a joke).

I also forgot to mention that SRK had a great role in Kamal Haasan’s magnum opus Hey Ram. SRK might be the ultimate hammer but no one in their right mind would call Hrithik a better actor than him, and this is where I admire Salman. At least his fans are honest to admit their star is not much of an actor.

Generalizing millions of movie viewers based on personal choice is definitely not the activity of someone in his “right mind”.

        • Quality in art is a subjective matter as far as I’m concerned (exactly why Rajamouli is a mediocre film maker but I cannot add an imo after each statement). The only Salman film I’ve liked so far is Bajrangi while Although Dabangg was fun, its not something that qualifies to be a good film in my books. As for SRK, didn’t like any of his films except Swades & CDI to an extent. So yeah HR has 3 good one’s, more than these 2 as far as I’m concerned. Not that that makes me a fan of HRs mediocre filmography like his other fan boys & girls. While I did enjoy KMG and D2 as a youth, they’ve aged horribly badly and deserve to be drained down the flush just like KNPH (which was shockingly rated as his best on this forum) and those Krrish films. Ditto for SRKs Darr and Baazigar which although i enjoyed watching as a kid, none of them have aged well and he’s almost intolerable in both those films when I watch them today. Films that do not stand the test of time cannot be called “good” films in my books. Period.

        • Not a Hrithik fan by any means but KNPH was a total paisa vasool masala film. As much as i didn’t care for HR (being a SRK fan), one can’t deny what KNPH meant at that time. A Super Star was born.

Personally i don’t think HR is even 10% of actor SRK is but its subjective. A sign of a good actor is taking an average movie/role and make it some what watchable. A sign of great actors are ones who makes scenes good just by being in the scene without saying anything. This is where you need to watch old films of Dilip, Raj Kapoor and many others to see how they take over the scene just by being in the frame.

Can’t believe you didn’t enjoy War, it’s better than 75% of crap that gets disshed out in hollywood.

And it might only be better than 75% of Hollywood’s crap (despite ripping off scenes from MI & Face off), the fact that its better than 90% of Bollywood’s commercial films is testimony to the mediocrity of the industry. No point slamming Hollywood forcefully when we all are well aware about which industry copies whom. By copy I mean blatant unabashed plagiarism! As for SRK, in my opinion he’s a horrendous actor whose best left shivering and hamming his way through lame repetitive dialogues with wide arms that might have made women go weak and inspired a generation of urban loafers on how to propose their bimbos, unfortunately I’m none of the above.

Small & mid range films might make a buck with good economics but the big grossers are only the one’s which offer the audience the big screen larger than life experience like we saw with BB, Padmavat & Tanhaji. There’s no better time for a film makers to make a Mahabharata/Ramayana/Shiva Trilogy etc. than now. However making these epics larger than life involves humongous effort from sets to locations to action sequences. None of the Indian film makers are willing to minimize usage of green screen and shoot elaborate sequences with practical effects or innovate with techniques like shooting on IMAX digital cameras. Its quite unfortunate since the level of CGI in most Indian films is still quite mediocre (as evident when you watch Tanhaji or BB2 on TV) and the only way to make them look more convincing is by shooting real time. Tumbbad is a prime example of excellent cinematography in real locations using practical effects and minimal CGI. No wonder despite 1/10th the budget it looks far more convincing than a Tanhaji :

Taking a serious view of the laxity in following Covid-19 protocol during campaigns, the Election Commission on Friday warned all political parties that it will not hesitate in banning rallies and meetings if precautions are not adhered to during the remaining phases of elections in West Bengal.

Modi and Shah should have taken a rightly higher moral ground, but if you are facing alligators like Mamta … anyway, there’s NO way Modi and Shah can be excused..

The PM who imposed an unplanned, uninformed and unnecessary pan India lockdown at a 4 hour notice a little over a year ago is now preaching and behaving in the exact opposite way, all this while he wants to celebrate “vaccine utsav”. Another few of such missteps and the Indian masses too might start to believe its “anyone but Modi” pretty soon. Salman also has around 35 hits or so. Again the lack of good films (barring BB and AAA) makes his filmography irrelevant even though he had quite a few blockbusters in his name starting from MPK to TZH.

Swades, possibly, but Chak De is way too generic a sports film, despite SRK’s finer performance. In fact, I have my doubts about Dangal being well remembered apart from opening up China. When it comes to sports films, longevity is hard.

When it comes to SRK, it will be DDLJ and Dil Se which will be remembered. Compared to other romantic heroes like Shammi, Rajendra Kumar or Rajesh Khanna, SRK is quite lucky that DDLJ is so iconic and that its references have endlessly permeated our culture, not just Bollywood but the South too (especially Telugu). Similar to Rajni’s cigarette or glasses, arms spread wide or a guy waiting out a train door are gestures that pretty much keep the memory of the star alive. Shammi too, due to all his dance moves, has a similar but much smaller cultural reference whereas Khanna’s crinkles are barely in memory and who knows Jubilee Kumar?

He’ll certainly be remembered as an important cultural chapter, the icon of “New India” if you will, and with an increasingly nepotistic culture, far more as a self made star. For all of Salman’s hits, the only way he’ll survive in time is as the trend setter of mean ripping their shorts and gym bodies.

And those deep movie fans remember and notice everyone (exact reason why you or An Jo talk of everyone iconic from Raj Kapoor to Ranbir). This “remembered for” phrase is coined by the media & for the media only for selling copies. Modern film makers for every gen take inspiration from yesteryears, but then they are professional film makers. As an analogy I’m sure >70% of modern Nolan fans have never watched a single movie of his idol Stanley Kubrick. Similarly 50 years from now if someone claims to have been inspired by Nolan, his generic fans would’nt give a hoot about Nolan. Phrases like “remembered for” & “for the ages” are nothing more than media hysteria. No movie, event or individual stands the test of time beyond a certain limited span. Even Sholay would an unknown film for someone born post 2010 irrespective of how much the media hypes it up. And hardly any genuine Indian cricket fan (except few of us intense one’s) care about when India won its first test or the events of 1971 etc.

        • I watched Dil Se on release in 98 and didn’t think much of it. Felt it was rubbish. Watched it again couple of years back, easily an excellent movie.
I agree by in large the sport movies like CDI and Dangal will lose steam in future. DDLJ will remain SRK’s iconic film.

        • my fundamental issue with Dil Se, why was SRK chasing Manisha when he had Preity in hand?

A good film is a good film, it will always stand the test of time – be it a sport movie or a drama, the genre does not matter. And films are not exactly like stars themselves; stars become irrelevant after a point of time. Classic films always find its audience in every generation and the next. They dont become irrelevant – thats why they are classics in the first place.

        • Lagaan is like a fantasy film. Plus the Oscar nomination means it’s legacy will be there.
JJWS has way more than just a sports theme.
          I get your point.

        • Agree with Marcus. A good film will ALWAYS stand the test of time but only for about 2 or at max 3 generations. As I mentioned earlier, beyond a certain point of about 4-5 decades its only the film makers & really passionate movie fans who’d wanna dig into movie archives from a bygone era. I bet most folks of my gen born in the 80s would never bother watching classics like Andaz, Anari or even Mughal E Azam while most of the generic audiences born post 2000 would hardly find Sholay or Deewaar interesting. Its films like Lagaan & 3 Idiots that’s inspire a 25 year old film maker today & stuff like Bahubali & Dangal for someone born post 2010. I bet even parallel cinema art film makers born post the mid 90s have hardly watched any Satyajit Ray stuff.

JJWS, although an excellent film, will suffer in reputation due to the fact it’s straight up copied from a Hollywood film

        • JJWS is a very good adaptation. Have you seen Breaking Away? Its not a scene by scene copy. Just like QSQT is not a scene to scene copy of Romeo and Juliet.

Dangal is more about female empowerment than wrestling. Its not just a trophy winning film like CDI or Gold. Thematically its much more socially relevant.

Anyways JJWS, Laagan and Dangal will have a v long shelf life by all means and will be always accounted among Aamir’s finest films.

        • My point with sports films has often been that the sports aspect is not given as much attention as the other themes in retrospect. Read any review of Raging Bull (considered the greatest sports film) and it might seem like a marital drama. Perhaps it is the optimist in me that thinks themes like women empowerment in Dangal or the questioning of a Muslim’s patriotism in Chak De might turn irrelevant with time.

If JJWS is not a straight copy of Breaking Away, then it has great staying power purely as to how it depicts teenagers in high school.

        • JJWS is an inspiration to film makers & audiences alike even 30 years after release. That’s testimony to its long lasting legacy. I’m sure the same would reflect in its present day TRPs, especially in Mumbai & Delhi. BOI might be tempted to call it mediocre due to low pan India BARC rating but factually, JJWS unlike most commercial films of that era was never made for the tier 2/3 audience anyways. Its more like a DCH of the early 90s.

        • JJWS is not just about high school teenagers. Its a story about ‘class’ struggle between the ‘slum’-dwelling kids and the rich ‘elite’ school kids. In Breaking Away, it was about the local ‘cutter’ kids vs the affluent university students. Apart from the class struggle and the cycling angle, the screenlay of JJWS was completely indianized and v well adapted. It was perhaps ahead of its time like DCH, as Shivaay said.

    • I will take SRK’s second decade above the other two. Mainly because he did his 2 best films in this period – Swades and CDI. Not a big fan of DDLJ, although it enjoys classic status.

The third decade is an eye-opener and completely underwhelming when compared to the first two. Specially nothing worked in the last 5 years (2017-2021), considering he has no release this year.

By the time Pathan release (next Diwali or so), he will be starting his fourth decade. He desperately needs the Hirani film, which gets delayed again and again in order to get permits to shoot abroad and also script revisions.

Hits – Mohabbatein, K3G, Baghban, Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar, KANK, CK, Paa, Piku, Pink, 102 NO, Badla.

I dont expect Khans to be working at 80 like AB. But it will be interesting to see how many hits they deliver in the next 2 decades. We shall see.

Aamir had announced Laal Singh Chaddha in a media interaction on his birthday in 2019. “I have always loved Forrest Gump as a script. It is a wonderful story about this character. It is a life-affirming story. It is a feel-good film. It is a film for the whole family. It’s a wonderful film so I really like it,” he had said.

    Vakeel Saab First Monday Business

    Box Office India Trade Network

Vakeel Saab had a drop in collections on Monday as it collected in the 5.50-6 crore nett range. The film had issues on Monday with ticket pricing the state government tries to implement a rule to set maximum ticket pricing which exhibitors are against and rightfully so. How many exhibitors actually dropped prices and went by the new rules cant be said.

There is a local Telugu holiday today (Tuesday) which should help collections of the film for a day or maybe two. The collections of the film till date are 75-76 crore nett and the week should finish in the 85-90 crore nett range. The film is said to be a remake of the 2016 Hindi film Pink but obviously they added star power and made the film more cinematic otherwise it would have no chance in Andhra as the original itself did not do well even in the biggest centre of Andhra, Hyderabad.

Pink had fared well in the five metros of Hindi markets especially Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore with the last mentioned one being excellent. The collections of Vakeel Saab over the first four days are as follows.

    Friday – 37,50,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 16,00,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 16,50,00,000 apprx

    Monday – 5,75,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 75,75,00,000 apprx

      Hilarious, BOI!

None of their previous reports on Vakeel Saab had any mention of the movie being a remake of Pink. Why? Because the film had taken a solid opening and collected 75+ crores in the first week. And it would be painful to admit that Pink was a very good ‘content’ film.

But a drop of collections and suddenly the Pink remake angle has been brought into the picture.

Astonishing levels of stupidity and stubbornness. Even more stupider to think their viewers will not see through this facade.

And Poster Boys. The deols were good. Some fun moments. Some overacting by the ladies.

    Mukkabaaz,
    Sultan
    Kai po che
    Panga

    Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

    Not in any particular order.
