  1. Just say that comment about Kareena being replaced for charging 12 crores. Just big Lol. Kangana is charging 15 crores and she has not charged less than 11 crores for any movie in last 5 years.

    • That’s shocking considering 90% of her films are flops or disasters and that her box office value has never been at par with any A lister.

  2. AnJo: “Should I pull out your mocking Akshay for his Canadian citizenship?”

Lol. So, it doesn’t make any sense at all. You are free to comment about SRK or anyone and it does not concern me. If I comment on Akshay doesn’t mean it is personal attack on you and I’m free to comment anyone. The point am making here.. if I comment on something, you can’t reply with comment on SRK hoping that it’s a reply in any sense. It is NOT! If there is topic about Kareena or Modi, replying with SRK’s reply will not make any sense at all.

Regarding Marcus – there’s no point to talk blatant lies, find me any point defending SRK in last 6 months or whatever. Then we’ll talk. Enough of just assuming things in your mind.

    • And pray.. why should we not mock Akshay for taking canadian citizenship for money? Would it be same if any of the khans did the same? Just pure hypocrisy! It is not that I don’t like Akshay also and still watches all his movies and I’m not narrow minded that you should still have Indian citizenship all the time. But the point is – if anyone else apart from Akshay would have done it – all would have kicked him out of the country and banned all his movies!

    • On the last thread, Tollywood (Krack, Vakeel Saab, Seetimaar), Kollywood (Master) and even Hollywood (Black Widow, Bond 25) do not seem to be facing issues releasing age old commercial entertainers on the big screen and online alike. Obviously someone somewhere (or many of them everywhere) in Bollywood seems to be getting it wrong with regards to Sooryavanshi and 83. The intent seems to be completely missing in the Hindi film industry. Almost seems like a hopeless state of giving up without trying.

      Like

      • Dont think they are giving up. Sooryavanshi and 83 will release once MH theaters open up. I think it will be Diwali and Christmas releases. But the main concern is content. Unless they are satisfying movies, it will be difficult to get audience back to theaters. We will see.

It’s a wrap for Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan starter Laal Singh Chaddha. It is an Indian adaptation of Tom Hanks starter Forrest Gump, which went on floors in December 2019. After filming in over 100 locations in India, the film has come to a close.

        • Actually expectations will be sky high for this film. Aamir’s legacy with his own production house consists of films like Lagaan, TZP and Dangal. And meeting such expectations is always v difficult.

Is this going to be a massy film? MASSY + classy or what?

  6. Box Office Update: Thailavii – Shang Chi – Fast & Furious 9
    Friday 17 September 2021 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Thailavii had a poor week collecting around 6.75 crore nett in week one. The film had bulk of the business coming from South as the Hindi version collected only 1.50 crore nett. The film fared best in the Chennai area but even there collections were down on the weekdays.

Shang Chi did pretty well in week two collecting 6.50 crore nett which is a 58% drop from the first week. It has collected 22 crore nett in two weeks which is a decent number considering the situation though the business from Hindi circuits remains low.

Fast & Furious 9 had a low second week collecting 2.75 crore nett which takes its total to 14.25 crore nett. The film could not collect well in English as some of that potential audience would have seen a pirated version. A early August release for this film would have meant higher numbers than Shang Chi. It could have reached 30 crore nett with an early release before the pirated version penetrated the market. It has better collections than Shang Chi in Gujarat and many other cities where only dubbed versions of both films are playing.

The Telugu Seetimaarr had fair collections of 11.50 crore nett but this was mainly becasue of the opening day of 4 crore nett. The film could not sustain post the opening day and weekday collections were hardly anything. The Telugu industry being frontloaded did well in the first quarter post the first lockdown and it should be the same after the second lockdown but internal issues with ticket pricing will have to be sorted out first.

Shah Rukh Khan had bought the India rights of a famous web series that deals with bank robbery, and his film with Atlee is said to be a plot comparable to it. But we have to wait to see whether it’s a true fact or the team surprises us by coming up with a different story.

A jail official collected the money from his associate regularly,” said the source.

    • Love Story is not that big a film. Its coming with manageable expectations and shud do ok to good. Problems are with highly anticipated films like LSC – big budget, remake factor, Aamir coming after 4 years, pressure to revive cinemas, etc etc. Such a film is more likely to disappoint and under-perform. Same goes for Pathan and Tiger 3.

I foresee a repeat of 2018 in 2022 when the highly anticipated films of the Khans will all underperform. Smaller films from Ranveer, Ranbir, Shahid and Hrithik can be expected to sail through more smoothly. Specially given the current box office scenario.

The state government has expressed discontentment over the fan shows, benefit shows, film ticket prices, and its occupancy in Andhrapradesh. Whereas on the other hand, the Telugu film industry is facing several other issues in terms of its releases.
The Government has objected to any extra shows for popular star films and scrapped any hike in the ticket prices though permitting half occupancy at the theaters starting with Pawan Kalyan starred ‘Vakeel Saab’.
Now big-budget moviemakers are reported to be very saddened with these decisions of the government and aren’t coming forward to release their movies under these circumstances.
As per the latest reports, the AP government is very busy developing a new web application connecting all the film theaters in Andhra Pradesh, making sure soon a movie ticketing portal is available from the government bodies to the public.

In my TUMBADD critique — a superb, superb film — I had made a GENERIC observation as to how a very, very well made and well -shot movie was ‘designed’ to show that the Pune Brahamans were more involved in whore-mongering and gold and greed over-ruled everything.

But as i mentioned, it falls on deaf ears and deaf …..

I have argued this before and maybe Sanjana who is good at research can point it out: Don’t give me designer films that have ulterior motive – If you have the guts, try to even attempt a film like this – https://youtu.be/4MTZvKJc0jY

Or watch TABBALENYANU NEENADE MAGANE or VAMSHA VRUKSHA on how they have tackled Brahmanical prejudice and patriarchy. Or at least request you to please read them in English translations when you have time.

And what is this age difference gap? It’s been going on for years in Tamil, Telugu,Marathi, Hindi industry since ’50s: The great Dilip in BAIRAAG. I am NOT familiar with Bengali industry much except for the Master’s films — no, not our Master but Satyajit Ray — so cannot comment on that, We have evolved from conquering sati system to a bal-vivah and are now stuck-up with gender-discrimination.

My only point here is, this has existed from decades and is carried onto the cinema art form. Rakhee plays Bachchan’s Sakhee in Bemisal and then his mother in ‘SHAKTI.’ Go figure.

The point that men can get away with acting with women more than half their age is an age-old phenomenon built in India and in Hollywood. Does it need to be changed? Sure as hell! But that has to by systemic! Who will boycott the BHURJ KHALIFA song on this principle? Anyone?

And the point that today’s actors are far ‘fit’ than AB in LB with his paunch and a saggy face or Dev [Dev was a joker of the highest degree; he is on record for saying that I want to have young, beautiful girls as heroines in my films.]

And pray, Farhan Akthar is by far the FITTEST actor in the industry hitting 50. What next? Will AB’s grand-daughter be his heroine or Suhana? Another topic for discussion?

Remember, it took the year 1997, close to hitting millennium, for Madhuri to say to her husband in MRITYUDAND, ‘AAP HAMRE PATI HAI, PARMESWAR BANNE KA KOSISH MAT KIJIYE’, while a stunned Shabana looks on…

What I feel is a well maintained female star should be given a chance to pair opposite her once hero and they can avoid silly love songs to cater to thrid class audience. They can pair even with a 16 year old but they cant expect the thinking audience not to criticise just because it is a parampara worldwide. Akshay looks aged with his young heroines. So is srk without those dark glasses and stylish beard. Salman looks as though he went under knife.

        • @Sanjana,

Great points. I like reading your comments as they’re decent posts with staying on topic and open minded enough to look at and accept different views.

The topic was very simple about how srk potentially working with someone more than 20 years younger than him. which led to me bringing up lal badshah because it’s more recent than going back to 60s of raj/hema scenario.
I brought up point about how todays actors are more physically fit so it doesn’t look too odd as let’s say overweight Raj romancing Hema. I eve brought up point about how within that same era, Dev pairing with young girls looked better than others because Dev was slim.

But the “usual suspect” always take the comments wrong way and brings in a completely negative vibes to discussion.

Anyways, back to some points you made:

Lata being called out for singing for young girls:
Even Dev said he started taking Kishor because Rafi was sounding older on him. This is when Rafi was only in his 40s. At the same time Dev was doing films with young girls 🙂

“What makes heroes to go for this? Producers maybe pressurising them.”
Heroes/humans loves it, being paired/associated with someone much younger than them. Men or women.
But due to how culture/society works, older actor with younger actress is more acceptable.

It’s really sickening when you think about how much women had endured thru out the history and still continue to do so. Not as bad as before but still, they’re being abused a lot.

  28. YouTube is littered with videos that show the original source of some scenes in Atlee’s movies. For example, in the airport scene in Mersal, when we see Dr Maaran for the first time. He has been pulled aside by the airport authorities for checking that smacks of racism. Locked up in a room, Maaran notices from the window that a woman at the airport is choking on her drinks, and is unable to breathe. The hitherto mild-mannered Maaran then overpowers security officials to help the damsel in distress. And he performs an emergency medical procedure using items that he could find at the crowded airport to save the woman’s life. And there is the exact same scene in the South Korean medical drama Good Doctor.

The allegations of copying scenes from other movies didn’t just begin with Mersal. Atlee has been under scrutiny since his debut film Raja Rani. Many believed that the marital discord between the husband and wife in an arranged marriage setting was a riff on director Mani Ratnam’s Mouna Ragam.

Although the plot’s predictable and some of the VFX goes awry in the second half, Marvel studios have done well to do away with the gimmicky 3D variation and released this in the 2D IMAX format to retain the truly big screen experience. 7/10, works doubly better when watched on 35mm and Marvel’s best since Doctor Strange.

The whole point about Avatar is about transforming you to a new world which it did better than any other movie in history. 35. Box Office To Be Better This Week
    Wednesday 22 September 2021 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The box office in India will yield better results this week after a couple of low weeks driven a Telugu film called Love Story with support from Jungle Cruise and Qismat 2 in East Punjab and Delhi. The Telugu film had advance sales for the weekend of 91.50 lakhs nett from 70 odd properties in Hyderabad by yesterday evening (21st Sep). These are very strong numbers and most of this advance is likely to be for day one. The film also crossed 1 lakh ticket sales in Nizam / Andhra on ticketing platform Book My Show by Tuesday night.

The film is obviously a love story for the youth and with this sort of advance it will yield the best opening day figures in India post the second closure. Jungle Cruise is a film that had some potential for India but its a delayed release and piracy is going to hit the numbers but its still a better release than what we had recently.

Then in East Punjab and Delhi city there will be Qismat 2 which will lead the way. The film has not opened advance counters as the film is late with a censor but it should do well. It may not be the blockbuster opening type as that is mainly reserved for the comedies as far as Punjabi film goes but it should get a good run especially if the content connects.

        • Earlier, Somy had spoken about convincing her parents to let her move to India as a teenager even though she was never interested in becoming an actor. “It was 1991 and I was 16. I saw Maine Pyar Kiya, and I went, ‘I have to marry this guy!’ I told my mom that I am going to India tomorrow. She, of course, sent me off to my room, but I kept pleading that I have to go to India and marry this guy — Salman Khan,” she had told a leading daily.

She added, “I was such a misfit in the film industry. I had no interest in pursuing a film career, and my only goal, which sounds preposterous at this age, was that I have to marry Salman.”

Speaking to Zoom, Somy has now said that Salman was not faithful to her. “We have moved on. It’s been 20 years since I broke up with him. He cheated on me and I broke up with him and left. It’s as simple as that,” she said.

Somy even added how she didn’t learn anything from Salman during their time together but appreciated the kindness of his family. “Not a single thing from Salman, but I learned a lot of good things from his parents. The biggest thing I learned is that they never saw religion and treated every human being equally. Their home was open to everyone and love permeated throughout their house especially from Salma (Salman’s mother) aunty,” she said.

In an interview with ETimes, Somy opened up about the film Buland with Salman Khan that didn’t see the light of day. “Salman had just begun his home production and was looking for a leading lady to star opposite him in the film called ‘Buland’. We went to Kathmandu to shoot; unfortunately, I was too young and new in the industry and there was some problem with the producers and the film was shelved. So it was a metaphor for our relationship I would say.”

Somy Ali and Salman Khan reportedly dated for eight years. In an earlier interview with Zoom, Somy had revealed that Salman was not faithful to her. “We have moved on. It’s been 20 years since I broke up with him. He cheated on me and I broke up with him and left. It’s as simple as that,” she said

The Telugu film Love Story recorded a huge opening as it collected around 8.5-9 crore nett on day one which is the best start since cinemas reopened after the second wave and the eighth best opening post the pandemic. The film was especially strong in Hyderabad and surrounding areas which are officially allowing 100% occupancy.

The top openings post the pandemic are dominated by South films and mainly Telugu films as the Hindi markets have not been able to get going. Also the film in South are very dependent on the first day while for us its about the weekend as multiplexes dominate business and they collect best over the weekend. The top Hindi opener remains Bell Bottom but the collections was under 3 crore nett. The top openings in India post the pandemic are as follows.

  52. After the promotional event, Nagarjuna and his family hosted a dinner for Khan. At the dinner, the 62-year-old actor was told about Naga Chaitanya’s character’s name in Laal Singh Chadha, where he shares the screen with Khan. The Majili star is called Bala Raju in the movie. Coincidently, Nagarjuna’s father and iconic actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR) had played a character with the same name in the movie Balaraju more than 70 years ago. The fact left Nagarjuna surprised and emotional.

Arvind Swamy looks like MGR when he wears those dark glasses and acts sincerely. He is almost 70 percent MGR. Raj Arjun as the cold Veerappan is an apt villain apart from Karuna who becomes villain later. Bhagyashree looks so pretty that I feel Salman does not deserve her as a co star anymore. Let him act with dumb mannequins and bimbos who cant emote but boost his ego. Bhagyashree looks so pretty and young that she easily overshadows Kangna in whatever scene she is in. And Kangana is too good as Jayalalitha without looking like her. Infact she has a separate identity which is very endearing.
Please watch this movie. I dont know why it did not do well, especially in the hindi belt when they can lap up B and C grade telugu films.

    • Some imaginative writing and dialogues to spice up the narrative. It ended with a fairytale like scene. They tried to show the best side of the protagonists. Arvind Swamy uncannily resembled MGR especially in the latter part with that fur cap, dark glasses and other physical embellishments which marked MGR and shielded him from focus on his real physicality in real life. The editing is good and not a moment of boredom crept in.
A little understanding and empathy with those times and culture will make the viewing more satisfying.
All in all I felt that Thalaivi is far better than Manikarnika. Yes, it is more Kangana than JL but that did not matter much. It is a brave attempt to insert so much without making it look haphazard. Direction is top nautch.

I am happy to see Sooryavanshi and 83 getting solo releases on Diwali and Christmas, as they have indeed waited a long period with ready films.

Also glad that LSC is postponed from Christmas 2021. It will eventually release sometime in summer 2022 or later. More than Valentine’s day, i think it will be more appropriate for an Independence Day release. Lets see.

The film has just gone into post production and if biggies like Sooryavanshi, 83 and Prithviraj doesnt do much beyond 100 cr (likely in current scenario), then i am sure LSC will not release in mid-Feb. I doubt if LSC will release before the market opens up and throws a 200 cr nett grosser. I foresee films like RRR and LSC to release in June-July at earliest, if not later.

There’s no reason why a well accepted Sooryavanshi would not have performed in Maharashtra and Delhi-NCR the same way as Master and Vakeel Saab did in their respective home markets. 85. Maharashtra Opening Sets Up Sooryavanshi For Diwali
    Monday 27 September 2021 14.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The cinemas in Maharashtra are set to open in the last week of October and the announcement of release dates flowed pretty much as expected. The exhibitors had expected cinemas in Maharashtra to open in the first week of October but for some reason the state government allowed schools and places of worship to open while holding back cinemas till 22nd October.

This is ridiculous as most cinemas have operating procedures in accordance to covid rules but this will be hardly there in places of worship. Nevertheless there is an opening date and it gives the industry some clarity and allows films to release. The best news was that the makers of Sooryavanshi decided to come on Diwali as this film would be a different animal on Diwali then on any other date. The trailer of this film released way back in March 2020 so there will be some staleness with a new trailer but that will be compensated by a Diwali release.

Sooryavanshi on Diwali was the best option to start and that has happened as of now. We say as of now as there is still six weeks left for release and you dont know what is going to happen with covid19 and how state governments are going to react. Maharashtra has been pretty strict with cinemas and as society opens up cases are going to go up as has been seen in the West but they have kept life going on without lockdowns and hopefully its the same way in India.

There will be teething problems when Sooryavanshi releases especially in Maharashtra as many cinemas here will be opening up after 18 months. Also there are many other circuits in the doldrums with less cinemas than before the pandemic and collections just not coming in many areas. This is not going by the quality of the film but comparatively comparing the circuits over the last month or so.

On the other side there will some areas which will be ready to give strong collections on the big Diwali holiday. The last big Diwali release was Housefull 4 in 2019 and maybe in some circuits (if not circuits then some centres) Sooryavanshi can get near the numbers of Housefull 4 or maybe even surpass and if that can happen it would be a great result. To get all circuits going strong will be a process and will take time. This is the difference with Hindi cinema which caters to many circuits rather than one or two. It is easier to get 1 or 2 circuits back that is why we have seen some regional films do well over the last 18 months.

1983 has also got a perfect date with Christmas as that is the sort of film which can best on Christmas. Its not the same as a few years back where you used to get many clear weeks with a Christmas release with makers now aiming for the lucrative New Year release. Still the sort of audience profile 83 will have is a good match with teh Christmas audience.

This film is a so-called pan India film as its releasing in many languages and is clashing with another so-called pan India film Pushpa. This pan India thing has come up now but the fact is very few films have broken the regional divide and that will continue to be case. Pushpa can be pretty much written off in North India despite a good trailer after its song which is typical Telugu but its possible that West India and parts of Central India might give it a chance. It will pretty much ditto for 83 in South India barring the Hindi audience there. It can be a pan India release but a pan India film will be a rarity unless its a Sholay or Bahubali.

Its probably too early to talk about Xmas as you dont know what is going to be the situation in 3 months time so for now its all about Sooryavanshi hitting theatres on Diwali. Hopefully it does well and lockdowns keep away which will in time allow the business to return to normal or near normal levels. If this happens then just maybe we can start thinking records again with the big event films Pathan (Shahrukh Khan) and Tiger (Salman Khan) which will hit screens Diwali 2022 and Xmas 2022 respectively covid permitting.

Daniel Craig is the best Bond ever…!

        Like

        • What I like about Daniel Craig’s era as Bond is also the writing — for the first time after On Her Majesty’s Secret Service there has been an attempt to humanize Bond. There’s a deliberate attempt to talk about his background, his psyche and even his physical ailments.

For the first time ever, Bond isn’t just a martini-sipping Casanova who kills for fun… but he looks like an agent who isn’t exactly enamoured with his job and he’s certainly not a Casanova.

Craig’s physicality, of course, is a huge plus. It also helps that he’s a fantastic actor! The action sequences too have become less far-fetched and more in tune with the times. The whole package is so much more appealing and Craig, of course, is the cherry on top.

The best Daniel Craig film was Casino Royale, no other film has matched that since.

        • Casino Royale is definitely the best but Skyfall is right up there and Spectre, too, isn’t bad at all. They are all part of a series going back, delving into Bond’s past. I’m pretty sure No Time To Die is the final chapter of this saga — Christoph Waltz as Bond’s half-brother is the kind of twist that reminds me of Sherlock’s final season. In Spectre, Blofeld (Christoph Waltz) literally tries to drill a hole in his head — symbolizing the writer’s attempt to get into Bond’s psyche.

And FWIW, I personally loved Sherlock for what they did to the character.

Bond movies were meant to be larger than life persona for Bond and full on masala as a whole film. In that sense, i like the old Bond movies more.

Nothing wrong with Daniel and current Bond movies, they are fantastic but it has lost some feeling of those good old fun Bond films.

And that’s precisely what has happened. The Box Office for the James Bond franchise couldn’t have been better. That’s on top of the critical acclaim films like Skyfall and Casino Royale have received.

In Brosnan’s era, Austin Powers, a spoof on James Bond, was outgrossing the Bond franchise films, at least in North America.

And who defines the purpose of a Bond film? The audience?

Yeah, they’ve been happy to make Skyfall the highest grossing Bond film of all time. Adjusted for inflation as well.

Spectre is at #4 and Casino Royale is at #8.

How is inflation adjustment a hoax? Perhaps you know more than proper box office websites like Boxofficemojo. Can you expand on why you think inflation adjustment is a hoax?

Personalization bit? I think you mean ‘humanization’ of Bond, and clearly, the film that does exactly that is sitting at the top of the Box Office charts. In fact 3 films out of 4 which deal with Bond’s past are amongst the top 10 Bond films in terms of Box Office receipts. The fourth barely misses out — QoS is at #11. This is not a coincidence.

Either ways looking at the nature and popularity of the franchise you’d need to make a really terrible Bond film for it not to work at the box office.

Wrong again! License to Kill & The Living Daylights were amongst the best critically appreciated Bond movies that pretty much bombed at the box office, ending Timothy Dalton’s run as Bond.

Another non-sequitur, but that’s par for the course — after, of course, box office figures adjusted for inflation is a hoax.

Dalton’s films received critical praise, that’s the objective truth. They also flopped, which is also true.

Brosnan’s films (which were template-following Bond films for the most part) were outgrossed by Austin Powers, a spoof on James Bond, another objective truth.

But hey, it’s impossible to know the “truth” just because a guy who likes to stir up shit on this forum says so!

        • Normally, I don’t do this, but I’ve seen and read enough BS from this poster here to warrant a response. There have been 3 outrageous claims made in response to my simple post on James Bond.

Claim #1 — Humanizing Bond defeats the purpose of the franchise.
My response — first of all, that’s an opinion and that opinion is not supported by facts. Bond’s films that deal with his past and do humanize him have been incredibly successful at the Box Office. The contrast is starker when we compare these films to the ones that immediately preceded the current Craig era. So the purpose of the franchise is clearly not defeated… rather, the franchise has never been stronger!

          Verdict — BUSTED with a capital B

Claim#2 — One would need to make a really terrible Bond film for it not to work at the box office.
My response — Incorrect, as critically-appreciated films like The Living Daylights and License to Kill were box office failures and lead to a gap in rebooting the franchise for 6 years! The franchise got a new Bond in 1995 but it wasn’t enough to lift the franchise up, box-office wise, to its past glory. The 4 films that followed were never quite up to Roger Moore’s standards at the Box Office, let alone Sean Connery’s. And these were Bond films following a set template. This was what Bond was known for, all these years, and it clearly wasn’t working in a big enough way. Craig’s era, which is where the focus has been on Bond as individual, has been the best phase so far in all of Bond history, considering the Box Office returns per film.

          Verdict — BUSTED

Claim#3 — Box Office adjusted for inflation is a hoax.
My Response — This one is completely bizarre and was thrown in just without thinking. Even a 10 year old can tell you what adjusted for inflation means. If the Box Office is not adjusted for inflation then ROOHI, a film that released in 2021, during the pandemic, has earned more than SHOLAY. That’s how basic this stuff is. And yeah, when I asked for a response as to why adjustment for inflation is a hoax, I predictably received none.

Verdict — I don’t even have to type BUSTED. These are the kind of stupid claims that completely unravel a person — these people are not here for any serious discussion, they are just here for shits and giggles. In other words, it’s called internet trolling.

If there are any more claims that I encounter, from this person in particular, depending on my mood, I will expose them for exactly what they are.

          Over and out!

  94. The date is yet to be decided. A source in the know says the long-awaited film will stream during Diwali. “The date is yet to be decided but somewhere around November 3-4,” says the source.

Kartik Aaryan’s made-for-Netflix thriller has been in the news for a year now. Its streaming date has been deliberately held back by Netflix, as Dhamaka is being seen as a super-premium product for Netflix’s Indian market.

“It’s going to be a game-changer,” says a source from Netflix.

Yes Minister, a political satire cutting across party lines that’s as relevant today among the shambles of Indo-British bureaucracy as it was during the 1980s (if not more). Every episode is a must watch at least half a dozen times!

        • Firstly Black Adder is a great detour for those who like these settings of history. I use to love Tudors and Stuarts in school. God I wish the makers of The Crown would showcase late 1400s to 1600s…the material is extraordinary. Wars, Columbus, the Church, divorces, beheadings, great fire, the plague, guy fawkes, Armada…it’s just ridiculous material.

Black Adder cast is ridiculous when you consider it has Rowan Atkinson, Tony Robinson, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. The last season was something presented in history classes. The creator Richard Curtis went on to be involved in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones, Love Actually.

  96. On the legacy of Mind Your Language after over 4 decades of release :

First things first, in the day and age of liberalism, feminism and so called “equality” a show like Mind Your Language could be written off as outright crass, offensive and racist with its religious and racial stereotypes through all its seasons (partly why it never ran beyond the first 3 reasons till about 5 years later with a poor reboot). However the relevance of this delightful show can never cease to amaze even 44 years after its first episode aired on television. Its no surprise this show has been remade in over half a dozen languages (India having its own Zabaan Sambhalke) with themes that seem light hearted buffoonery on the face of it, but a lot darker with a tinge of satire once you scratch the surface.

The year 1977 was a time when Britain was in the slow and gradual process of coming to terms with its new found multicultural, multilingual identity and in the process of accepting its painful “second fiddle” status to big brother in a cold war world. A show representing Spanish, Italian, Hungarian, Japanese, Chinese stereotypes and one where you have Sikhs and Muslims repeatedly take jibes and swear at one another would be considered nothing short of blasphemous in this era, however from the perspective of the 1970s, this brand of “stereotypical comedy” was more of a mirror to the traditionally racist “divide and rule” British society at large. It obviously helped that most of the gags were exceptionally well enacted and genuinely hilarious (god bless the departed souls) and the dialogues were of a standard seldom seen in today’s “politically correct” semi pornographic American brand of comedy (that usually gets exceptionally boring beyond the first dozen episodes). Its for this reason Mind Your Language, a classic for the ages would continue to inspire millions across the globe and manifest itself in remakes and inspirations for decades to come.
