The Telugu film Love Story is set to become the highest grosser post the second lockdown as it has grossed around 30 crore nett in six days and should cross the numbers of Bell Bottom in the first week. The film has seen dropping collections after a near 23.50 crore nett weekend. The film will not collect much moe than 1 crore nett on Thursday but overall the film has done well due to initial collections.

Qismat 2 is rock steady with collections set to cross 10 crore nett in its extended eight day weekend. The film had a little drop on Wednesday mainly as collections in Punjab came down 15%. The collections in Punjab did not drop on Tuesday as Monday had been affected by a bandh.

Delhi city is fantastic for the film with the collections on Wednesday being 5-10% lower than the opening day. This is a good sign for Hindi films set to release from Diwali onward for business in Delhi city.

    • Hindi films getting massacred at box office. Bollywood can ctrl c ctrl v South cinema but it can’t ctrl c ctrl v it’s box office collections. Meanwhile Bahubali can enter into the lion’s den with a dubbed film and erase every record in sight.
The truth is Bollywood is devoid of creativity for long time. The soundtracks are a big give away!

It’s rather funny that the Royal Family is the least British and the most British at the same time.

As good as The Crown is it has to be tempered a bit not to be insensitive to those who are still alive. But you could be pretty truer to centuries back.

The reason I mentioned Yes Minister is because its content is perhaps more relevant in New Delhi’s bureaucratic circles than London’s itself (remade as Ji Mantriji in Hindi). As for Mind Your Language, its the most universal, socially relevant globally appealing sitcom ever (remade in 8 different countries at last count).

It’s going to take one good response to change things around.

  4. Shaan says he struggled to sing for Aamir Khan and Sanjay Dutt, 2 songs that changed his life
Singer-composer Shaan’s momentous three decade long journey makes him an icon today. Being an integral part of shaping India’s music scene in the 90s, Shaan today looks back at how from recording live in studios to now recording on iPhone, he’s seen it all.

Singer Shaan had a tough time cracking the right vocals for “Chand Sifarish” in Fanaa (2006). That’s because everytime he tried to record it, he would unconsciously end up copying Udit Narayan. “‘Chand Sifarish’ was my first song for Aamir Khan. I don’t know why I kept singing it like Udit ji, maybe because I’d always heard his voice on Aamir. I had to consciously make an attempt not to sing like him,” Shaan revealed in a candid chat with indianexpress.com.

The artiste, who’s now been an integral part of India’s music industry for the past three decades, has crooned nearly 3000 songs across languages, with some of his most popular numbers being for Saif Ali Khan and Abhishek Bachchan. According to Shaan, his voice matches a lot with Saif. Also, he’s glad he got to record the remix of “Dus Bahane” for Baaghi 3 too, which he originally sang for Bachchan.

I think we should move away from taxing profit as it’s incredibly fiddled…tax the revenue at a lower rate or so something where big companies pay their fair share.

Otherwise the world is moving towards individuals whereas before it was about states.

  13. Thalaivi and Iruvar

Iruvaar focussed on friendship between MGR and Karunanidhi though Ratnam did not take their names in order to avoid controversy. But you cannot hide an elephant! It was somewhat authentic to some extent, the bond between the actor and the writer. And Annadurai , named Ayya, was convincing though Periyar was missing. People who are unaware of virulent anti brahminism prevalent during those times will think that reservations was the main issue. Even anti hindi agitations were somewhat sidelined.

Through the twosome’s dialogues, we get to know how the believing public was manipulated with the help of the glamor of larger than life film personality. How corruption made its way big time but everything was hidden due to hero worship, leader worship and due to some bits thrown at the poor as a token gesture.

Ash was not bad but too many dances to showcase her skills ate most of her screen time. Other ladies were just doormats including Tabu. Prakash Raj’s tamil recitals were good and so was his role as a writer, as a friend, as a politician and other hats he wore in his journey. Mohanlal was chubby, cute and most unMGR in looks but more than made up with his enthusiastic acting as a struggler, as a friend, as a lover and as a reluctant politician. It was his show all the way. Mani’s most interesting film.

Thalaivi on the other hand, had lovestory between the protagonists MGR or MJR and Jayalalitha. Arvindswamy with makeup looked like MGR and this made his role more sharp and relatable to those times. His love looked more matter of fact than passionate. Karuna was portrayed as the ruthless angry politician and a formidable leader. This Karuna was more relatable.

And Kangana excelled in acting, sensuous dancing and great screen presence. She looked and acted more like Kangana but that cant be helped. She has such a strong personality. The film ended on a positive note instead of showing the full story of Jayalalitha. They also showed the real life conflict of mother daughter. Kangana had many interesting scenes till the end. Overall a good movie. Direction and editing are commendable. Not to forget casting and makeup. And also other aspects of the film.

In Iruvar, Mohanlal and in Thalaivi, Kangana. They got plum roles and most screen space. Both did justice to the roles though Mohanlal gets more points from me.

You wish he would make a smart choice and decide to collect his phone tomorrow. But, you know what they say, “A day without a smartphone is a day wasted.” He goes back in and soon he realises he can never get out.

What’s more, Guru also finds Harini in the office. She fell unconscious in the document room and somebody locked her in it. At least there is a silver lining to Guru’s predicament now. Applying Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity to the situation, Guru’s night long stay in the office must seem shorter given that he’s sitting with a pretty girl. My analysis is bang on. The market without Maha and 50% seating with no night show in delhi was 20% of pre pandemic. This way Bell Bottoms did not do so bad overall. In normal scenario, it was headed for 150 cr which would have been same as what is did thanks to 80cr offer from Prime allowing 4 weeks of theatre. Both scenarios were Above average commerically.

The new regulations will come into effect from October 4, and will be applicable to all UK nationals arriving from the UK.

From October 4, all UK nationals arriving in India from the UK, irrespective of their vaccination status, will have to undergo mandatory home quarantine for 10 days upon arrival. They will also have to undertake pre-departure Covid-19 RT-PCR test within 72 hours before travel, again at the airport on arrival and then on day 8 after the arrival.

  18. Watched Chehre on amazon Prime. Interesting thriller.

I read on google that the film is an uncredited adaptation of the 1956 German novel A Dangerous Game by Friedrich Dürrenmatt which had earlier been adapted in Marathi as Shantata! Court Chaalu Aahe (1971) in Kannada as Male Nilluvavarege (2015) and in Bengali as Anusandhan (2021).

Film was engrossing and even the much criticised Bachchan’s bhashan at the end was tolerable due to his charm. That part could have been edited. Good to see Rhea C in a small role. A satisfying watch with surprises and twists.

It’s a costly film, and they felt this isn’t the right time to mount a film like this given the market scenario. Even the script work was taking longer than expected. As all factors came together, the trio decided to put the film on hold for time being,” a source informed Bollywood Hungama. That’s not all, the source added, “The production budget of Mission Lion was expected to be upward of Rs. 70 crores and add to that, the acting fees of Akshay, other cast members, and the marketing spends. A film of this scale needed time with no compromise on script and budget front. The team will revisit it once the on ground scenario is better for theatrical business. In-fact, even the script had not shaped up as well as Akshay expected it to be.”

    Agree or Disagree?

Christmas solo release with 3 weeks free run…those days are gone.

Its worst to be Aamir khan fans. Man he is coming after 4-5 years after a disaster. He needs a fillip to his career. Most importantly a life line to his fans, who a month ago wanted to retire from Satyamshot out of frustration and sheer helplessness from their Aaka.

Now it is worst to be a star who doesnt have any other release apart from the only one and a remake of a hollywood movie. I wonder what worse can happen. At best looking to be an average fare as of now. With a bugger movie coming a week before and a weel after, its like someone prepared a double vaccine to Lsc.

I hope for the sake of sanity if his fans, it finally gets a release. Will be be a flop and not a disaster? Will it be an average and not a flop? These 2 questions is at best needs patience. Not something we have at the moment with most here, do we?

Arjun Rampal, apparently had turned Gauri Khan (and Suzanne Khan) into a proper drug addict and he was very close to SRK’s family at one point of time.

The best news for the film in India is the business in Delhi NCR which is better than Shang Chi which is the best Hollywood performer post the second wave. East Punjab is also better than Shang Chi despite Punjabi films dominating though still a good chunk of the business is from South. These results are mainly due to Delhi and Punjab being in a better position than three weeks back as more people return back to the theatres..

I already gave my opinion about drugs during SSR case and I don’t see it as a big deal. Yes, it is illegal but consuming drugs doesn’t make you a criminal. Two separate things. If you want to destroy your body, it can happen with anything be it smoking, drinking or drugs.

Even Obama has admitted to doing drugs as student when he made marijuana legal is many states in US. It is just no big deal!

There would have been enough discussions and permissions taken at national level (as it’s NCB) before proceeding with this arrests or even thinking about it. It is just whom you want to target in the society. You can catch anyone and even raid anywhere if you want to. Leaving out the big fish openly in the market and catching young kids anywhere is not going to help you solve the drug racket. It is just diversion tactics and showing some their place in the society.

Now, you don’t even need to know prove that Aryan Khan was doing drugs. Tomorrow he’ll be out saying nothing concrete but the damage will be done already.

“We sincerely hope that this statement will put to rest the motivated, malicious and false propaganda being run on social media against the Adani Group. APSEZ is a port operator providing services to shipping lines. We have no policing authority over the containers or the millions of tonnes of cargo that pass through the terminals in Mundra or any of our ports,” it further added.

The importer firm, identified by official sources as Aashi Trading Company, is alleged to be run by M Sudhakar and his wife G Durga Purna Vaishali.

The couple has been arrested by the DRI from Chennai a few days back and they were later brought to Bhuj town in Kutch. On Monday, the couple were produced before a special court for NDPS cases in Bhuj that granted 10 days’ custody of the two to the DRI.

The massive Mundra port drug seizure on September 15 was a result of a painstaking investigation of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) after the same drug runners did a dry run on the Kutch port on June 9. On the night of September 14-15, the DRI seized nearly 3000 kilogrammes of Afghan heroin mixed up with talcum powder from the Mundra port, feeding a drug network extending all over India including New Delhi and Noida.

According to top North Block officials, the DRI, working on the leads provided by the June 9 dry run, was able to identify the drug runners, mode of payments and principals behind the Mundra port seizure with the help of central agencies like IB, RA&W and NIA. With the seizure highlighting the extent of the drug network of Afghan nationals in India, the central government is expected to hand over the entire case to the NIA.

With the links of Mundra seizure reaching the Capital, the Delhi Police have also started a new drugs-terror-underworld unit in the Special Cell with the appointment of three new DCPs in the unit. Working with the central agencies, the Delhi Police is trying to explore the deadly triad link in the Capital city where Nigerian and Afghan drug runners are active.

According to security agencies, the capture of Afghanistan by the Taliban will lead to a serious drug situation in the Indian sub-continent as opium cultivation and heroin processing will be the main source of revenue for these Pakistan backed Sunni Islamists. “Presently there is more than three lakh hectares of opium cultivation in Afghanistan. We expect a super bumper crop under the Taliban this year as a result of which the global markets will be flooded with drugs, making the youth and children extremely vulnerable,” said an NCB official.

India has a prevalence of use of opioids, which according to a government study is as high as 2.1 per cent as compared to .70 per cent global average and 0.46 per cent Asian average. If we extrapolate these percentages into numbers, the daily requirement of heroin in India is around one metric ton per day or 360 metric tons in a year, which is valued at ₹1,44000 crore in the international market. It is quite evident that this money is used in other organized crime activities and for terror.

The 8.5 cr weekend nett of the new Bond movie is definitely 8×5=40 cr nett level in pre pandemic phase.

The Hindi belt was naturally most affected in covid and is taking most time to recover.

How many cases you hear of overdosing? I just hope they’re smart enough to not over do it or mix it with other things which can lead to their death.

The collections of Bell Bottom continue to trickle in despite it being streamed on Amazon. The film is now in its seventh week and has collected around 32 crore nett comfortably making it the top Hindi grosser post the pandemic.

The best business for the film has come in Delhi / UP with the film grossing around 9.50 crore till date. Even though the film had no release in Maharashtra it has still managed to cross the 6 crore nett mark in Mumbai circuit thanks to some good numbers in Gujarat every Sunday.

Bell Bottom will remain in cinemas till Diwali dud to the lack of releases and probably finish around the 32.50 crore nett mark. The collections of Bell Bottom till date are as follows.

    Week One – 18,72,00,000

    Week Two – 7,31,00,000

    Week Three – 2,87,00,000

    Week Four – 1,83,00,000

    Week Five – 82,00,000

    Week Six – 31,00,000

    Week Seven – 12,00,000 (4 days)

    • As per my calculation of 20% of prepandemic level, this is equivalent to Rs 32 crx5 = Rs Rs 160 cr nett.
However this is just to check the market level and doesn’t mean anything for Bell Bottoms.
Its share is 15 cr from theatres and 75 cr from OTT. International share plus audio etc might be another few crores.

I think Bell Bottoms made a good decision to come in theatres a month before OTT. It hasn’t gained anything but in the process revived the theatres who are not running towards a hopeful scenario.

Not that 30 cr nett was the criteria to be a hit. What Netflix gave without theatricals itself recovrred the cost for producers. The day BB released it became a hit commerically.

Theatricals were pure profit. Were they enough tk be called a big hit. Not really. In strict term, it is above average.
Considering the extreme scenario and cost, its a clean hit.

        • 20% of pre pandemic level is a very low yardstick even for an urban multiplex film like Bell Bottom. With Maharashtra shut and the rest running at 50%, this should have done at least 50 Cr to be called a success/hit. Its an Average/Below Average fare in current circumstances.

        • He at least faced the storm. What does that even make of others’ ‘stardom’ when they can’t even dare a theatrical release during these times?

If BB is a flop, it doesn’t affect Akshay Kumar that much. He has 5 or 6 projects lined up to have another go.

Guys like Hrithik, Ranbir or Aamir have much more to lose. At this rate, you will get 2 films from them by 2030. If one flops, it makes things downright terrible for them. By their third venture, they could be playing Aryan Khan’s Grandpa.

As for Bollywood films flopping, the writing has been on the wall since quite some time. 90% of films are made for very select audiences, which appeals to very few people. Most of the themes are downright unappealing to most people. No wonder, the industry is hit very hard during these testing times. Most people won’t even bother. There is a big difference between not liking something or plain indifference from most poeple. When it comes down to a feeling of indifference, then it becomes much harder to revive things.

          Liked by 1 person

        • You’ve laid out exactly why Akshay Kumar was the only one in (or one of few, maybe Devgnn too) a position to take a loss and not the others. Others are not in a position with a completed film and even if so because of fewer releases they can’t afford a Bell Bottom scenario.
It was likely this result for Bell Bottom as it wasn’t a sensible decision. Let’s see with Sooryavanshi as it should fair way better.
Fine line between taking calculated risks. I wouldn’t expect Aamir to release LSC unless the conditions were good. There is way more pressure on that film than any single Akshay movie. Way more expectations too. There is no need for him to be silly and release to be ‘brave’, ‘courageous’ or some kind of ‘hero’ who ends up with a flop.

          Liked by 1 person

        • In any case if we speak about specific stars…Aamir/Hrithik in particular have a history of gaps between releases for various reasons so is it any surprise that they wouldn’t release during a pandemic? Is it shocking at all?

I’m hardly surprised Akshay Kumar has released 2 films especially when he has so many to release.

I definitely would prefer to have work in this scenario but surely one wants the film to work at least! Hardly a situation where you shoot from the hip and hope you kill a blackbuck!

There is no rush or pressure IMO for Aamir to release LSC. A home production, he’s better off making sure that whatever he releases and when he releases he gives the movie the best chance of success.

Akshay’s situation is different. Can’t be compared. Does one want 10 opportunities in a bad market? I doubt it. Plus others have stakes in his films as he’s not producer or financing them. He’s in a situation where he can remain visible but there is hardly any mileage to be gained unless he knocks one out the park. Bell Bottom hasn’t done any good IMO. Reviving theatres – well if the numbers are true the film is a theatrical loss. It’s not the kind of revival that is a unanimous success. A revival is the opening of No Time To Die in UK for example. It’s actually broken records of previous Bond movies. 30Cr for Bell Bottom – please it’s not celebration moment at all.

Bollywood is massively struggling period. It needs a massive film to revive the industry. Not a niche multiplex film.

          Like

        • It is YRF, Rohit Shetty, Ranveer, Rajamouli who are holding back their releases. LSC is not complete with post production work going on and so are some other films. A big budget film like Suryavanshi and RRR cant take risks like a not so big budget films. And they are not churning out movies every 2 months.

As for doing few films, it is their choice. They dont worry much about filmography or money as the case maybe. For some, their one film in 4 years is a sort of devotion and they are not much bothered about success or failure. They hope for the best and are ready to accept even failure. Remember Mera Naam Joker?

In my opinion both are crazy. Churning out 10 half baked films like a factory and making one film in 4 years, a very big risk. A middle path is welcome.

Ranbir and Ranveer are new hopes as they both are relatively young and both are star actors. While the older ones with fading looks and advancing age will be rejected by the bored audience in a matter of 2 to 3 years. I bet that they will never act as grandfathers to the budding heroes even if they dont get any work or dont make movies for themselves like Dev Anand used to do.

If I have Rs.1000, I will not mind losing Rs.100. If I have only 100 rupees, then I will not want to lose that 100 rupees.

        • The answer is pretty simple.

Why didn’t Akshay release Sooryvanshi instead of Laxmi straight to OTT?

Why didn’t Akshay release Sooryavanshi instead of Bell Bottom few weeks back?

Big films like LSC or RRR are expensive films and need proper release. If aamir thinks he needs to wait another year to release LSC, than so be it. Just like Akshay/Shetty didn’t want to release sooryavanshi so far and waited until MH opened up.

The trajectory of Bell Bottom is more like Gold and Padman. Not hits – average at best except Naveen will add it in his run of Akshay’s 15 blockbusters in a row. Because that’s what he does. He adds spin better than Shane Warne! Except his googly has been hit for 6 as no one sensible is calling Bell Bottom any kind of theatrical success! Or even a hit! If the movie is excellent people will still watch in cinema over OTT. But Bollywood isn’t reliable enough for good quality. Best to create a hybrid model IMO.
I personally would watch a big film at theatre even with knowledge it was on OTT in 4 weeks. Of course it depends on the film…it wouldn’t be just any movie.

Bollywood will need OTT IMO. Till it gets it’s act together producing quality it’s an industry that will have to bend over rather than other other way round.

        • Can it even be compared? TOH released for Diwali, with open weeks and at the best time possible when a Bahubali had made over 1000cr in India and when it was raining hits at the BO practically every week.

BB released during a pandemic, with an OTT release platform in view in order to make up what it loses theatrically, with Maharashtra shut and sanitary measures on social distancing prevailing everywhere around. Name me one Bollywood film that could have released during that week and on which you could have placed a bet that it would be a theatrical blockbuster? Not a single one.

Context is everything and we can’t ignore that. Even right now, there is not one single Bollywood film on which I could place a bet that it would work in the hindi belt. Even if RRR releases this week, I would bet it would be a wash-out in the hindi version.

What I mean is that if anyone’s favourite star’s film would have released there, you would be seeing OTT platform figures being produced here and the rhetoric would have been in the lines of ‘let’s forget about the theatrical here because we are in the middle of a pandemic and it changes everything as the circumstances are ones that have never been seen before. Surely we can’t be knocking the film for not being able to work wonders in the theatres right now?’

That’s not bad trending at all. And it makes sense — it’s a pretty good masala film, as I’ve mentioned before.

Smaller screen capacity and longer shell life. These aren’t bad things at all.
I would prefer a movie that made 32.5Cr over months than one weekend. The former at least shows some anecdotal appreciation. Obviously if you wanted to make money you prefer the latter- a big lump sum.

        • My verdict on BB performance is this. It gets brownie points for releasing and breathing life into the industry.
The opening was poor IMO but the film has shown a tail to stick around. It’s worthy of a below average status. Factually it’s a flop but as it’s shown some fight it gets below average. It’s nowhere near a hit. The opening was too poor.
All of it comes into play. Opening, trending, budget, economics.
          Economically it’s a flop.
          Opening was poor.
          Trend is decent.
          Budget seems OK.
Below average IMO. If I was picking between hit or flop it’s a flop.
I expected more simply because of how other parts of India are working and the global box office in general.
If we use MH as main reason we should see % contribution of many films from this specific belt in the next few releases that do release there to get a sense of what loss BB had collections wise from MH. You could probably work it out with historic releases.

But anyway assigning classification in these times is a mugs game. Everything is different because of pandemic. But it does beg the q why Hindi films are behaving like outliers to everything else. Overall they are disposable I feel. Only a few films a year warrant watching – that too from home. Why waste your money in cinema or pretty poor films.

We know father name of one or two kid, what about others?

Getting on an expensive cruise, can’t be some ricksawalas son.

If Bollywood have issues in MH with favorable gvmt in state, imagine what would happen if they move to yogiland, for those who think bollywood should pack up and move to UP.

I think this is well planned and they’ll ensure SRK son isn’t out for long time. But money can do some magic sometimes so you never know.

      • 1. Your so called Yogiland does not keep theaters senselessly shut till they’re bribed well enough unlike a goon marathi manoos fringe party.
        2. The Hindi film industry deserves to be in the Hindi heartland, not in an overexpensive, overrated sewer of a metropolitan city where fringe goons run amok with anti Hindi, anti Bihari campaigns for the sake of political votebank.

      • There have been widespread rumours about SRK and his family being into drugs since quite some time. The reports about those parties at Mannat with SRK and Gauri Khan’s close circle of friends who hard drugs flowing frely around have been widespread for several years. You can see that the most vocal, the biggest public backing the family got were from people like Deepika Padukone and Suzanne Khan, who have been known to be into drugs. These people pretty much claim Aryan is innocent and a victim for being a celebrity’s son. Watch someone like Sunil Shetty’s backing, for instance, which is more nuanced and about letting justice take its course and not to jump to conclusions.

Deepika’s reported chat a few month could not be clearer. After talking about ‘maal’, she even named the drug she wanted in her chat with the dealer. It is also widely known that Suzanne Khan was very much within Arjun Rampal’s circle of drug addicts. Somewhere it probably cost her her marriage. The same Rampal has been closely associated with SRK’s family since several years.

When you are into drugs, how do you set an example and keep your child away from it? It becomes harder.

Nothing can be taken for granted with children. But when you look at the upbringing that someone like AB gave to his children, it becomes harder to fathom someone like Abhishek Bachan, for instance, falling into drugs.

A the end of the day it is clear that if Aryan Khan is consuming or dealing with drugs, he should be punished for it. And neither should he be a bigger target merely because he is a celebrity’s son, nor should he also be declared innocent or be allowed to go beyond the law merely because of that.

  74. The promotions have not kicked in for Suryavanshi. Maybe bollywood is too stunned as of now.

    • I think it will start with two weeks to go. I’m sure they’ll be on Kapil Sharma, and other reality shows.

Just had a chuckle thinking about film promotion when i was a kid, which was pretty much posters at railway station and few plastered around town.

  78. Both Shang Chi and No Time are doing 20-25 cr in India currently as per BOI. In pre-pandemic times these wud be usually doing 75 cr or so. The market is roughly at one third of pre-pandemic times at present without MH.

In same vein, BB wud have done around 90 cr in pre-pandemic times, which is same as in Padman range.

    • If Sooryavanshi was to perform like any other Akshay superhit in recent times, it wud have done 190-200 cr nett in pre-pandemic times. Currently that amounts to 65 cr. Add 30% to it due to MH opening and u get a projection of 85 cr nett total on Diwali. But will it be a hit at that total from economics point of view? The answer is simple – a big NO due to its big budget and interests it has incurred due to the long delay.

      • Now 85 cr is perhaps the best case scenario currently. Anything more wud be welcome. My personal prediction is 70-80 cr total for Sooryavanshi.

  80. Look at No Time To Die. It’s scored the biggest opening weekend for a Bond movie in UK. And yes we are still somewhat in a pandemic. It obviously has some significant meaning like being Craig’s final outing to boost opening. If it gets close to Spectre’s $881mn WW haul it’s done fantastic IMO. The key will be US market.
Spectre is about $200mn from US and Skyfall $300mn. NTTD will need to be ahead of Spectre in US IMO to challenge the $881mn. The $1.1bn Skyfall WW is pretty impossible IMO as I think UK numbers are super front loaded – let’s see.
