  1. Damn you munna! My comment didn’t post as you closed previous thread 🤣

On Aryan it sounds like a witch hunt. But at same time if he’s done something illegal he should get punished.

Aside – I don’t understand fascination with drugs, there are plenty of other ways to get a ‘high’!

    • If anything this is a wake up call for parents. What parent wants their child to be in trouble for something they’ve gotten away with for ages (if I believe rumours). Imagine how the disciplinary conversation between parents and child goes here. It will reek of hypocrisy and reputation of loss and probably more embarrassment for parents than child.

In the end this is just about whether you’re caught or not. Some can then influence outcome and others can’t.

Few facts – there was no party going on. The ship was still boarded with over 1300 people. Aryan and his friends entered near main entrance and went inside and were arrested right away. They arrested 8 people and then let the ship still with other 1300 folks. NCB didn’t stop the ship neither checked other 1300 folks, that would have taken a day or two. The rest enjoyed their trip as usual.

Secondly, Aryan was invited by media event planner. They do to attract sales of tickets and he invited as guest for this short trip from Mumbai to Goa cruise.

I have no intention to support Aryan here but clearly folks are twisting open facts. They didn’t check other 1300 folks and then nothing was found with Aryan and his medical test was clean.

If there was a drugs party or rave party, it won’t be with just 8 people and then it won’t start with ship still tied to anchor.

NCB official sources said Aryan Khan continuously cried during the interrogation. During the questioning, it was further revealed that Aryan Khan had been consuming drugs for almost four years.

The NCB sources have further said that even when Aryan Khan was in the UK, Dubai and other countries, he used to consume drugs.

  2. SPOILERS FOR NO TIME TO DIE

I don’t understand why the Madeliene character wasn’t named Tracy? Or even the daughter? Would have made it a great subversion to have Bond die and Tracy survive. So, Leiter dead, Blofeld dead, Spectre gone, Bond blown up, they should shelve Bond permanently, or until Cruise finishes Mission Impossible, which is the perfect spy series.

Even better if they got some of the older Bonds for cameos in Skyfall, Spectre and NTTD.

His carefully cultivated image, PR and everything crumbled like a pack of cards with this incident and that is burning you and you are turning your anger against aamir in your fury. I remember how srk fans barring Z attacked aamir like wild wolves when he broke up with Kiran.

I sincerely wanted all of us to forget silly differences and pray for Aryan because I have a motherly feeling for kids.
I and Z strived for this consensus. But you people are unable to take the heat while srk himself is keeping his calm and doing everything possible to come out of this nightmare.

Remember one thing. Yesterday it was aamir, today it is srk and the person who truly deserved all the brickbats is Salman with his wild history and he is looking like some saint.

“Accused Aryan Khan, in the WhatsApp chats, is discussing modes of payment to be done for procurement (of drugs). Several code names are being used. All the accused persons have to be confronted with each other. The international transactions need to be investigated,” Singh said.

In his argument, Satish Maneshinde, lawyer defending Aryan Khan in the case, told that court that NCB had found nothing on his client except his phone. “Nothing incriminating was recovered from Aryan Khan except his mobile phone.

  10. If Sanjay Dutt can have such a great career even after serious charges, why not others with lesser charges or nothing proven, cannot have big careers?

We are all passing through difficult times due to covid, due to other things like financial distress and this is not new if we go back and study history. We had some good times and this lulled us into believing that bad things wont happen. And we are unable to take it.

Just imagine, if fans are so perturbed, what about the celeberity families? Of course they are cushioned with luxuries and living a protected life with so many options and choices and friends in powerful positions to help them out.

And srk is coming back with 2 sure hiots and once again he is going to rule. And then his son will rule with proper training and with a grand launch never seen before. There is dismay amongst his rivals. I will not rule out some big names.
And other conspiracy theories are also making rounds. I am going through some tweets of regular tweeters.
Or it maybe a straightforward case. Since ssr’s incident, ncb people have regularly doing investigations and going after clues procided by informers and others and they have also arrested some big drug suppliers from mumbai. They went even to Chennai to arrest a big supplier and his wife who were living as common citizens in a middleclass locality.

    • Aryan Khan’s statements. He has been given custody for 14 days now!

Officers interrogated me and took me under arrest. I have no connection to any of the organizers. I do not deny my friendship with Arbaaz but I am not connected with his activities. He himself says he came on his own. They have interrogated me on the basis of my chats. Be that as it may, Aachit is the only person they have to confront me with, but that can be done anytime. That can be done even after I am granted bail. They have not interrogated me for two nights. Why is custodial interrogation required now?

I have a friend, Prateek, who introduced me to someone who was in touch with the organizers. He said I will be invited as VVIP. Only with that intention to add colour to the cruise, I went. There were 1,300 people and they have arrested only 17. So the entire cruise is not connected to the passengers and as one of the persons from Bollywood… but I am not connected to anyone… There are chats between me and Prateek…Prateek is also a friend of Arbaaz. So he invited Arbaaz. Based on the aforesaid events, I reached the gate where Arbaaz was also there. Before we could go to the ship, NCB asked us questions. When we started from the ship, they asked questions if I took drugs and searched my bags and my person. They found nothing. They took my mobile instrument and then took me to the NCB office. I am not saying which pancha took me.

As far as my client’s statement is concerned, I was arrested and picked up at the gate. I had no complaint to the officers. As far as this case is concerned, on the first day, I readily agreed for one more day of remand, thinking there will be some development. Apart from some more arrests, nothing more has happened. As far as my interrogation that has taken place, it was connected to my stay abroad. Nothing else has been questioned. If the arrested are picked up on my statement, any senior officer connected with my investigation would ascertain that it is the same person or that I have any association, but nothing has happened. Yesterday, when they arrested Kumar, they should have confronted whether Merchant and Khan were related or not. They did not. The question of confronting should not be the only ground. One more development is, the cruise organisers have been detained. They have arrested a foreign national with whom I have no connection so far.

      • This statement is ‘I have no connection’, ‘I do not deny’ etc. The one that floors me is the last sentence.

‘I have no connection “so far”‘

I was in a bad crowd when 14 years old. I was coaxed into stealing from a store. I knew perfectly well what I was doing. Thankfully the store manager called my parents and that was a life changing moment in itself.

If he’s done something wrong it will be a tough lesson. What doesn’t break you, makes you stronger!

        • Agree but ‘so far’ is very bad way of saying but it is how lawyers write statements. Basically it means – there is another foreign national arrested and there is no connection with that person. I read lot of lawyer’s reports and I feel shocked to see such poor grammar and sentences giving rise to other meanings but it works in the judiciary.

        • Jay: Yes, what doesn’t break you makes you stronger. Here it is not about individual growth or coming out of it. It is all about perception. If the perception that Aryan Khan was caught into drugs is built, his life & career is ruined. Similarly, Sooraj Pancholi’s career is ruined the day he was involved in Jiah Khan’s suicide. Irrespective if he’s the reason or not, the perception is that he’s the issue and public will NEVER accept him as leading man.

Aryan Khan was invited as VIP guest and it was publicized in the cruise promotion and NCB and everyone else had clear plan and time to setup this operation. Or else, who is keeping track of Aryan in daily basis or any star’s kids.

  15. WOW, SS is alive, finally…

It used to be like this every time SRK film trailer, or movie released 🙂

In USA, Tom Cruise son/daughter getting caught with drugs would probably get 10 seconds of airtime on some channels but 8 farmers getting killed would be National news and would get ample time on all media outlet.
In India, we all know what’s the case. This alone should tell you the state of India, and this isn’t just limited to current times, it has always been like that. So this has nothing to do with BJP or Congress or any other parties.

For all the LAWYERS on this forum. How much jail time someone has gotten in india for having 6 or 8 grams of drugs? I assume it’s not lifetime.
Aryan will be out and someone like Karan Johar will launch him and have a career. Even if he doesn’t, i’m sure daddy has enough money to feed next couple generation sitting home.
And none of us will have extra slice of bread or lose slice of bread from our table weather aryaan lives or dies.

Not taking SRK/Aryaan side but haven’t we learned anything from the SSR media fiasco?

This too will pass in no time because I have full faith in judiciary as well corruption in India from top to bottom.

As far as Aamir is concerned, it’s none of our business what he does in his personal life. We can have opinion on it but we don’t know what’s going on in some ones life which triggers events which etches paths in life. Some take alcohol, some drugs, some part ways to deal with the issues. In aamirs case if he feels it’s better to part ways, then it’s his life. If it’s about sleeping with girl half his age, he doesn’t need to get divorced to do that. He can easily do that any anytime he wants with outdoor shooting and so on, with as many different girls he wants.
As I had said before, at some level he is keeping respect of marriage by getting a divorce (I know it sounds weird) and not just having side affairs.

We are human and it’s better if we act like human instead of trying to be Gods.

What I object to is the holier-than-thou image these celebrities project to the outside world. No one wishes to judge people, especially not me.

But if someone’s giving lectures on depression and is then caught consuming drugs then I’m going to have very little sympathy for them.

The other thing is, it’s not only Aryan Khan who has been caught — others have been called in for questioning too. Deepika, Sara Ali Khan etc.

Perhaps there was political pressure applied to halt investigations into their chats but for what it’s worth, they deserve to be exposed as well. Playing with the emotions of impressionable young people is a ghastly thing, in my opinion.

But he hasn’t been projecting any image.

In his case, I’m more stumped that SRK fans are giving character certificates to a guy who’s definitely not a role model. He does have followers on social media though. And for the sane ones amongst them, it should be clear that he’s not the guy to follow.

The whole brouhaha is because he’s SRK’s son. So what? He did the wrong thing, he got caught. End of story, really!

He’s not the only one to take drugs in Bollywood. I’m saying everyone who’s taking drugs should be called out. KJo made a show out of Bollywood Wives, calling it fabulous lives or whatever.

It’s only when incidents like this get reported that people, at least the sane ones, can see the brutal reality behind the fake smiles. The real ugly underbelly of Bollywood.

tl;dr — it’s not about Aryan Khan. Bollywood is fake and sanctimonious to a nauseating degree and that needs to be called out, IMO.

        • I agree with your entire sentiment around fakeness but there are bigger fish to fry than this kid who hasn’t even started being an actor. If one was to clean up Bollywood I doubt you’d start here. I would certainly hope in this case his parents take some of the blame and responsibility especially if the rumours are true on there own habits.

Ultimately he’s a kid who’s exposure is to a certain lifestyle from Day 1. This is one heck of a lesson.

It’s exactly as I said earlier. If a parent of mine was a habitual stealer and I was seeing that all the time and I thought it good to try that…in the process getting caught – part of that blame is on the upbringing and exposure that kid is exposed too. Also it would be silly for parents to preach here. Again if rumours on Gauri are true is she in any position to ‘parent’ responsibily here? Hardly in a position to do much. All her parental leverage is gone.

Good parents set or try to set an example. I actually feel a bit sorry for Aryan. When news broke out I could see the fan war side humour of this but actually I see this as a proper messy situation for SRK and Gauri. Career will always be there for Aryan. The comparison to Pancholi is nothing. This is SRK’s son, he’ll get into a big film guaranteed and audience won’t care. They didn’t care with Dutt, Salman etc.

This year I probably typed Piers Morgan twitter most than any other person because of his comments against Osaka, Raducanu and Biles. In the end I was happy to see egg on his face.

I doubt any harm is done to Aryan as superstar prospect. If anything in Bollywood this kind of thing will probably heighten his stardom!

What was the political motivation behind calling in Deepika, Sara, Shraddha, Arjun Rampal for questioning? Why are SRK fans so fussed about a political angle when it comes to his own son?

I’m actually annoyed that Navika didn’t reveal Aryan’s chats on Times Now. Would have been another ‘maal you have’ moment.

But jokes aside, even if it’s politically motivated, at least SRK’s fans should admit that his son might be a drug addict and a poor role model for his social media followers. Both things can be true at once.

Most people know what happens in movie industries, colleges and even schools these days have people doing drugs. This is not surprising at all.

So there is political angle and witch hunt angle there. Once that is there, it’s hard to understand what illegal things the NCB themselves did to get to the point of arresting aryaan.

Aryaan taking drug will destroy his life or his loved ones. Not mine of my loved ones. Who cares.

But ultimately (‘if that rumour mill is true on SRK and Gauri’) they should definitely feel the most guilt here. I would as a parent 100%. People will say Aryan is a grown boy or man but he’s exposed to a certain lifestyle all his life. If he’s constantly hearing ‘mummy’ does this or that he won’t have any guidance or moral guidance here at all.

That’s why you see movies where during raid, the guy drops his stash in someone’s pocket or jacket and keeps nothing on himself. If you don’t have it, there is NO ARREST. If I go to a party with 10 people and 2 of them have drugs, they arrest that 2 and not 10. If you have medical test proven you took drugs right before I came, you can be arrested but even medical test is clean.

There itself the case fails. There is nothing more to it. If you want to find out more, you can confiscate the phone and let the person go. There is no point in doing custody for days and days together without any logical reason. He’s not going to run away!

I have been away from this thread and usually don’t comment until I watch the movie but I can’t this one first day. With all the reception and reports, no way this one will do 300 crores. D3 was not this bad. Real final collections = 200 crs (max), YRF collections = 240 crores. I don’t see it even doing PRDP in reality but the huge start will help it sale towards 200 crs. Race 3 did 165, I think as a solo release.

Then some fanatics started calling it classic and that it’ll do 400 crores or 450 crores and then kept laughing at others. Then it was an open playfield. Lol.

        • TOH was an ok film as per bollywood standards. But people expect a lot from Aamir these days. If this film had salman or akshay in place of Aamir it wudnt have been mauled like that and may have even worked at box office. Worse films have done a lot better in bollywood.

          I personally liked the film.

Then how come you go and catch only 1 top star’s son out of the blue. Saket is very sure Gauri Khan does drugs regularly. Then, how her or no other prominent personality is ever caught in decades? That clearly screams the setup!

    • I watched Akele Hum Akele Tum again recently. I miss the Aamir of those times.. that spontaneity, innocence, the natural actor in him. The film itself is not the greatest in his filmography, but it was a good film in its time.. with the right sentiments in place.

Aamir was really good in there. There is a scene when he comes back home drunk because he felt he could not live up to his son’s expectations. There was no need for the staggered steps of a drunkard, no need to act like someone drunk. He is in the background with the main frame being on his sleeping son, but one look at his face, and you knew that he was a bit drunk and hurting inside. It was a natural, heartfelt performance.

I do respect (but I admit frustrated with) his approach to work during the last decade. But, as an cinema lover, you want to see more of him., more of that spontaneity, natural actor, more of those heartfelt performances. His ability as an actor often gets overlooked because of his involvement at all levels in his film. But he is a tremendous actor. I miss that actor of the 90s.

Read Emma Raducanu’s interviews post US Open victory and even at 18 years old she realises she’ll need to manage her career by picking the right tournaments to play.
Look at Messi who got subbed off by Pochettino in PSG game 2 weeks back.
Ronaldo was dropped on Saturday by OGS.
To be a long term bet you have to manage your workload.

Akshay’s work ethic should be applauded but he’s an outlier. Vast majority- Khan’s, Ranbir, Hrithik, Ranveer are picky and choosy. I don’t see the issue unless you really want a buffet of trashy films every Friday.

        • No, pan India box office resurgence cant be judged by some regional movies doing well in one state or another. That is like a regional party winning a state election catering to a particular demographic, but it does not guarantee the party is going to win Lok Sabha elections.

We will need at least 6-7 Bollywood biggies to gradually bring back the pan india audience before we get a solid 200 cr nett grosser film. And 200 cr is the minimum that the big budget films will need to make enuf profits to get a Hit verdict.

‘This is what is being followed by most :

‘If the Distributor’s cost is X
Then a movie is a HIT if nett collection = 2X
Superhit if nett > 2.5X or a huge grosser
Blockbuster if nett > 3X or a huge grosser’

    So was Bell Bottom’s DC = 15Cr?

I’ll give the link of such comments. By his own words his box office knowledge is awful! By the way this is HIS standard. Not industry standard. Industry would compare the distributor shares with the cost. A guy like Nahta would not even call BB a semi hit let alone a hit. BOI/Taran more liberal types won’t either. It will be Naveen and Sunil.

Let’s bookmark this comment. Naveen will eventually in the future call Bell Bottom a blockbuster!

Bala, Housefull 4 (ongoing), minor releases, the rest of the box office

    • BB is flop to average. There are no 2 ways about it. And right now its history. Its basically did the way Tenet performed in US market when it released in an untimely manner. Tenet still did well in international circuit, but BB did not.

I am just hoping Sooryavanshi on this Diwali will not do the way WW84 did on last Christmas.

      Like

    • Yes this is a true benchmark. Stick to it.
What is Distributor’s cost for Bell Bottoms?
My hearsay is that it was done at profit share and there was no fixed cost. Usually distributors do not agree but with the issue at hand they did. Effective cost has come to 10cr.

In pre pandemic, BB would habe got sold at 80 cr + 25 cr OTT.
In pandemic, it is sold at 75 cr OTT and 10 cr dostributors cost. So using the same formula as above, BB has sailed through.

@ Marcus and Jayshah- Why are you applying your biased verdict on movies without keeping distribution cost in mind. My source is internal. I am still looking for a reliable publicly available source.

I thought the way Marcus was creating brouhaha as usual, he might have numbers with him. Seems he was all gas as always.

Give me the numbers mate. Elese go the golden way, silence. Noises are not acceptable by me.

        • Lol, so you pulled out a DP of 10 cr **Edited**? No source at all, but an absurd lie. How can it be so ridiculously low? Specially when the OTT deficit itself was 25 cr for the theatrical release. Logically the DP wud be more than that. So if we give benefit of doubt and say its 25 cr, then BB has only made DS of 15 cr, thats 10 cr loss straight away.

          Like

        • From what I saw reported around:

Landing cost (PC plus P&A) of the film was 60cr (excluding Akshay Kumar fees which is based on profits share). Akshay Kumar’s share will be around 100cr.

The Satellite/digital and other rights were sold for for 140cr.

The film got a rebate for being shot in UK (30%-40%)- roughly 20cr- of production budget of 50cr if it ran for 2 weeks (which it did). It is the main reason for theatrical release.

It does seem the rights and rebate covered all the costs.

          For the theatrical:

There is a sharing scheme between producer and distributors for the theatrical release. 60% goes to distributors in first week, 55% in 2nd and 50% each as from week 3, which is unusual practice compared to usual DP and DS, but it was adopted keeping the current pandemic and restrictions in mind.

It will most probably end up at 33cr net.

Make of it what you want.

My take is that producer and especially, Akshay Kumar have made money. Distributors less so.

Marcus claimed it would be average at these figures a few weeks back and has now changed goal posts. Naveen is claiming it to be a hit.

My take: Not a flop, not a hit. Average at best (mainly because of the pandemic, the trending, the revenues and OTT release scheme and that most stakeholders have not lost money). Impossible to predict any performance in normal times. Some of the above comparison metrics used are downright ridiculous.

          Liked by 2 people

        • Not going to argue with that. It’s never a hit. Every website was ecstatic to report figures. By end of first week no one was reporting daily figures. It was so obvious the movie’s collections were below expectations. Everyone in media would be interested in a hit – they wouldn’t stop talking numbers. BOI lost interest as early as Day 6. They themselves had little positive to say.
Everything anecdotal alongside the OTT deal and your numbers which I’ve seen on a site elsewhere suggest distributors are not calling this a hit movie.

Only a fan would. It deserves its brownies for taking the risk but no business person enters a transaction with a loss of 10Cr already! That’s in reference to the OTT price that Marcus pointed out and was known before release.

The other point was the pre release expectations. The trade was definitely expecting a 5Cr range opening, they make such expectations based on some idea of what the movie needs to achieve. That’s why the opening was deemed sub par from the off. The movie needed a 25Cr first week and then to sail through 40Cr at least for a narrative of success.

It’s short. We are only wasting our time on this topic because 1 person will eventually call this a blockbuster.

Even Akshay’s pre release interviews had things like 30Cr is worth 100Cr and 50Cr is worth 150Cr. So we know what ranges he sought for here. He’s in the Gold territory at lower end of 100Cr pre pandemic.

Akshay Kumar knows more than his own fans – I’m sure of that! I know it’s hard for this gentleman to digest and he’ll desperately try to spin things with fantasy genre like storylines but the writing was on the wall very early on.

The one positive is what Saket pointed out. The long term trend was decent (day 1 vs total). But I would say I’d expect that in a market devoid of front loading and one that looks like it’s been transported back to 20 years ago.

Nobody keeps all drugs in pocket for possession to be deemed illegal. If it is in vicinity (say with in room of presence then someone can make case, it was for consumption and above limit). Even in this case, it would be difficult to pin point one person to drugs if there are more people. Only way you can prove that drugs are for people in room if you do blood test and correlate to drugs found in room.

“I have a friend, Prateek, who introduced me to someone who was in touch with the organizers. They took my mobile instrument and then took me to the NCB office.”

” I was arrested and picked up at the gate. “

        • US tax avoidance is different. I gave an example on Amazon last week. The big techs are hiding taxable profits into investments.
I think I gave a real life example. Amazon paid 2% tax in UK compared to gross revenues. I pay 40% just as an individual. Here, something is clearly wrong. It is the main reason why this minimum global tax rate is arriving. Likes of Bezos, Tusk maybe paying fair share in US as individuals and maybe even their companies too but outside of their country the numbers don’t add up.

I use to work in a huge US company. Every year sub part f was a big deal. I never understood the concept. It was all dodgy stuff. How dodgy? Sometimes the pre tax profit was peanuts. Then this sub part F arrives and income shot up. Then tax was not high. I don’t know ins and outs of links. But this is what 2005-13 was like!

          https://americansfortaxfairness.org/issues/tax-extenders/39-national-organizations-objecting-to-corporate-tax-extenders-legislation/general-electrics-special-tax-loophole-lets-company-dodge-billions-in-taxes/

There are some industries that seem to do this way better. Retail for sure. Like the big supermarkets. They definitely seem to pay better share of taxes. The big techs not so much.

Because they are cutting costs. People who just avoid tax with some funky offshore accounts are just morally corrupt.

It’s such an easy problem to fix. Just ban offshore accounts. Or if you want to use one tax them for using one.

If the Distributor’s cost is X
Then a movie is a HIT if nett collection = 2X
Superhit if nett > 2.5X or a huge grosser
Blockbuster if nett > 3X or a huge grosser

This has Harvard level accpetance. Taran Adarsh follows this. Komal / Shivaay use the same metrics but has a classification less. Thats fine. BOI has found to have used it mostly for Khan movies but not for others like Amitabh or Akshay films. But they use it too.

  52. No Movement On Sooryavanshi Yet
    Saturday 09 October 2021 13.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The release date of Sooryavasnhi was announced a few weeks back but there has been no movement so far as far as a trailer goes or even a small teaser and there is no sight of promotion. This is because the Maharashtra government has not given SOP’s and guidelines to cinemas yet. The trailer will only come when Maharashtra government gives the operating procedures to exhibitors as that is the actual green light of cinemas actually being allowed to open.

There is four weeks left till the release date and hopefully the mandate from the government comes in the next few days or at least in the next week as this will allow Sooryavanshi to have a three week campaign. If nothing comes by next week then the promotion of the film is likely to suffer. In a normal situation a limited promotion campaign would hardly matter for a film like Sooryavanshi but the difference here is that this will be actually be the restart of Hindi cinema and this will have to communicated to the audience across the country. Bell Bottom did lack in this communiaction as digital promotion may look huge but does not actually reach the ground level as the industry tends to think.

The release dates have been announced of so many films but at the moment a film is seen to be coming only when the trailer comes with a date. Here the trailer is being held up until they are 100% sure that Maharashtra theatres will open up as planned.

The exhibitors cannot plan much either till they get the guidelines. There were many teething problems with the first release be it Puaada in Punjab or Bell Bottom in rest of the circuits and many cinemas could not release on the first day with many issues including settlements with landlords. If you intend to open then these things should be done before but here many agreed settlements post the release of the films as they saw business was up and running again.

This should be avoided in Maharashtra as if your cinema is going to reopen then you want to be ready for Sooryavanshi on Diwali as there is no better time to start but the this delay of not knowing the film is 100% certain to come on Diwali means less time. The makers on their part gave a six week notice with an intention to release but intention does not mean an actual release today and we are down to four weeks and it will be three weeks next Friday. Basically the longer it takes for the trailer to come will mean less cinemas ready to release in Maharashtra. It will be like Bell Bottom and Puaada in Punjab with cinemas being added post the first day.

A lot of this could have been avoided if the guidelines had already come but now its going to be a race against time for many cinemas as real negotiations with landlords will only start when the trailer is there of Sooryavanshi.

To be produced by Madhu Mantena, the three-film trilogy will be made at a whopping cost of Rs 750 crores (Rs 7.5 billion)!

According to a source in the know, both Hrithik Roshan and Ranbir Kapoor, who will play Ravan and Lord Ram respectively, will be paid Rs 75 crores (Rs 750 million) each.

“The rest of the budget will go into making the kind of epic that the Ramayan has never been treated to before,” the source inform Subhash K Jha.

While Lord Ram and Ravan have been cast, Sita is yet to be found for Mantena’s ambitious project.

Stories of Kareena Kapoor Khan being approached to play Sita were untrue, insists the source. “Kareena for all her talent doesn’t suit the part at all,” says the source.

Kareena’s husband Saif Ali Khan has been cast as Ravan in another project based on the Ramayan, Adipurush, which is being directed by Om Raut.

It’s around 20 Crores and will definitely cross Shang Chi’s total and go beyond 25 crores, but traditionally Bond films have done very well in India — especially North India.

I know that regional films have done well but those are completely different markets with audiences still besotted with stars to a great extent. They operate on a different paradigm altogether.

Looking at NTTD and Shang Chi, Bell Bottom’s total doesn’t look bad, although it definitely incurred losses for its distributors. With Maharashtra not open, BB has been the best performer during India’s second Covid –19 wave. Trended decently as well.

    • The day FF9 trended was an alarming bell for all concerned.
Hindi movie belt is still spooked big time.

Pre pandemic, Bond movie was a 150 cr+ nett even on a non holiday release. Its business when rest of Maha is at 100% occupancy is testimony of our times and new reality.

Bell bottoms on a non holiday thursday release at a time when theatres were closed, night shows not allowed and 50% occupancy is a remarkable story.

Parameters of Theatrical hit classification has changed now due to upfront loading of OTT offer. Not sure why it took many others to not accept the new reality. Maybe a confirmation bias that i am trying to make Bell Bottoms look better. Not my fault. A workshop on how to remove confirmation bias is free on linkedin for Jayshah and Marcus. 😁📌

        • Exactly. Even in pre-pandemic times NTTD wud be doing 75-80 cr at max in India. Same with Shang Chi.

Anyways, NTTd has doing softly in US and will probably end at 170M there, same range as Casino and Quantum. Even ww it will be in 600M range like Casino and Quantum. Given its 250M budget and the release delays, it will be a minor success at box office.

But if No Time to Die can leg out to anywhere near $700 million with only a nominal Chinese boost, that will be a sign that the entire global box office is, relatively speaking, safe for preordained blockbusters.

Should have been more around 90-100cr.

But dont use this to deflect.. 20% of the market at the time on BB has probably become 25% now. Still a long way to go. With Maha opening 50%, we might see 40% of the market now.

Still with 90 Cr nett estimate, my analysis that current box office is at 20% to start with and now at 25% of pre pandemic level is bang on.

      • I think most trade analysts overestimated the potential when Bell Bottoms opened the theatres in most of the states in India. From 50 cr to 75 cr, it was based on theatrical capacity not taking into account the pandemic perception.

The 50% cap and no night shows actually dented the ability to come to theatre. Family audience were definitely not ready for it.

A holiday release might still have done some trick. But a non holiday thursday release of a niche but well made film like Bell Bottoms was more of a test run of a reasonable big film. I myself thought the market would be 50%. However all these were estimates.

What one realised was even to do 50% of pre pandemic level,
        1. Maharashtra was needed,
        2. night shows are essential
        3. Occupancy is needed to be 100% esp on first 3-4 days
        and
        4. overall perception needs improvemement in terms of declining cases etc.
And unlike regional films, hindi film audience is in no waiting mode.

There is also an element of aversion to bollywood. It can be short term and temporary. But i do know few people (maybe 5% of theatrical audience) who are dead against bollwood movies, thinking it to be root cause of all evil like drugs, nepotism, linked to underworld, etc. and have boycotted it forever.

  79. Naveen please get your numbers correct.
Especially when you impose a Hollywood model on Bollywood movies.

    Bollywood Hungama
    FF7 2015 = 108Cr
    FF8 2017 = 86Cr
    FF hobbs and Shaw 2019 = 76Cr
    FF9 2021 = 14Cr

Skyfall = 45Cr (from BOI and Koimoi)
Spectre = 37Cr (from Bollywood Hungama)

The Bond series is not a big deal in India. It’s half the money of FF at most.
Note FF9 released well before in many places before coming to India.
Ff7 released in India on 2/4/15, next day in US
Ff8 released on 12/04/17 in both US and India.
Hobbs and Shaw released 1/08/19 in US and 2/08/19 in India
Ff9 25/06/21 in US vs 2/09/21 in India.
Obviously of all FF releases in a time when watching from home is more convenient it was hit massively on piracy in India. So using FF9 as any basis is futile.
No Time To Die is performing par expectations.
It’s below Spectre but not way off – that is without maharashtra.

    Now look at Gold.
BOI and BH total is 102Cr and 105Cr respectively. Minus their Mumbai territory totals you get 69Cr and 75Cr.
So you’ve eliminated Mumbai which is the main difference between back then and now.

Now you can adjust down by 50% (to account for 50% reduction in screens etc.) getting you to 35-38Cr for like for like release thereabouts.
Now knock off a few crores for fear in current periods but add a couple of crores for pent up demand. You more or less get to Bell Bottom’s total. Yes Bell Bottom is pretty much Gold’s equivalent today.

Comparing ff9 to previous ff’s is not right. The conditions of release dates is a massive curve ball.

And in any case were the 50% capacity restrictions going to housefull? No!

Bell Bottom has behaved like an pre multiplex era release where there was plenty of release time and period to accumulate collections. It’s still running today! This is what films use to do.

The difference between Gold and Bell Bottom is how they made they collections. Gold was front loaded. 70Cr opening weekend and 87Cr first week and lifetime of 105Cr. This is the pattern of a major star release on a holiday that simply didn’t interest audiences after week 2. Heck the film at 101Cr by end of week 2 and it finishes at 105Cr! That’s awful trending.

Bell Bottom’s trends have been aided by the restrictions and conditions. Akshay knew very well what he was saying when 30Cr today is worth 100Cr pre covid.

Stop trying to fool everyone here with this nonsense Hollywood model vs Bollywood model.

Z laid a perfect example. If there were 100 seats and now only 50 seats. And only 15 people turn up on opening. It is still a 15% opening or 30% whichever way you look at it. It’s poor.
The opening was poor. The trend ok. Doesn’t make it a hit.

Find me a single source calling Bell Bottom a hit film. That is your challenge today.

    • Bond is never that big in India. NTTD wud have done 70-75 cr nett in pre-pandemic times. The market is performing at one third without MH, as we saw with BB. That will improve with MH opening.

IF Sooryavanshi were to do 200 cr in pre-pandemic times, it will do around 85 cr in current market scenario. But that wont be a Hit total, but barely recovery due to high budget and costs associated.

The situation did change from 2015 onwards when even the Fast and Furious franchise and Mission Impossible did much better than Spectre.

Of course, Avengers: Endgame was a complete gamechanger and turned the whole tide in terms of Hollywood moves and their performance at the Indian BO but Bond still remains a marquee draw.

The fact that it’s going to cross Shang Chi and run Bell Bottom close, in India, is proof of the brand’s potency.

This 4 week or 8 week period may work in long term but not for a film to regalvanise the industry. You need a film to hit it out the park with favourable conditions. As the cards are firmly stacked against cinemas.

Not safe for everyone, overpriced, Bollywood is devoid of creativity, the big stars are aging…it’s a bloated industry and can’t recover with just pure luck. A proper release with surgically precisioned marketing and a great release date is needed.

I would like OTT to win over cinema (because of convenience) but realistically, they are going to co-exist. The big-budget VFX-driven blockbusters will first release in theatres and if people want to watch them, they will have to take a trip to the local theatre.

But the dynamic is bound to change — people will not accept bad actors and unless there is clear hype, they will not run to theatres to catch a movie.

And by hype, I mean either great word of mouth or megabucks spent on advertisement. I think reviews will matter more from now on.

        • @Saket, good points and that’s what i’m trying to say.

This concept or thought of that people are dying for big screen and it’s the only way is foolish.

Audience has moved on and OTT is not same as Doordarsahn of the 80s. The library is so huge on OTT and one gets to see movies from around the world which they wouldn’t get to see in theatre anyway. And add some fantastic TV shows like money heist, squid game, etc. There’s a huge library on OTT at ones finger tip.

Of course the big screen will be always be there but more and more it will be for event film like Avataar or big budget films or during holidays. Some small films may click but in general, you’ll start seeing that audience is not going to spend too much money on going to theatre.

India maybe different but in USA the Electronic companies made huge profit past 2 years where they sold lots of big screen TVs, home theatre system, etc. I mean most big quality items were on back orders.

I think you will start seeing some effects of this in future where people may decide to watch it at their house instead of dishing out loads of money to go to theatre.

Family of 5, maybe $40 between pizza, wings and soda. Grab the movie at Redbox for $1 or free if it’s on OTT you have subscription to. Movie and Dinner covered for under $50.

          Like

        • Last paragraph exactly. I’ve been shouting from rooftop that watching movies in theatre is far too expensive.

To watch NTTD for 4 people I shelled out £40 ($55). In fact that was after a discount…the actual prices would have been £55 ($75). Now throw in the ice cream someone kindly bought for us it’s another £20 ($30). A 5th person joined and paid for themselves.

I’m sorry but one movie experience has just cost a year’s subscription to Netflix.

I then learnt a different chain charges £5 per ticket vs the £10 I paid. Plus they have better seats!

Something will have to change. I’m not going to be wasting money when I’m not so precious about ‘cinematic experience’. Kids of tomorrow are screwed. They will be dealing with covid related debt, soaring prices…cinema is at the back of the queue as far as I’m concerned.

          Like

        • “Something will have to change. I’m not going to be wasting money when I’m not so precious about ‘cinematic experience’” – plenty of us actually precious about the ‘cinematic experience’ (as proved by NTTD, Shang Chi and Master) and thank goodness for that! OTT is just digital television which is eventually gonna replace satellite TV in the long run. Cinemas has nothing to do with OTT.

          Like

        • Look I expected a response from you. I am not knocking cinema. I am knocking it’s prices.

If you cut prices by 50% you never know….audience footfalls might go up from X to 1.5X – yes you will make less theatrical revenues on tickets but the extra 0.5X is more footfalls for food and drink. That 0.5X could be X. We don’t know. And overall you make more by halfing prices. This is basic playground economics.

Unfortunately if you cannot see this or the economics for a family of 4 you are either too rich to care or just not old enough yet!

          Like

        • Too many millionaires in India’s metros to pack houses for Sunday evening shows of NTTD I guess 😉 Anyways, ticket prices in India are very reasonable on weekdays but the exact opposite on weekends. Reduction would definitely help.

          Like

        • I think it’s “just not old enough yet!” 🙂

Just kidding but i think the audience will have mind set somewhat to what it was back in late 70s.

I remember during that time, movie was reserved for two Eid and Diwali. No other movies thru out the year unless it’s some special occasion.

Yes, economics has changed where people can afford to go watch or pay for their kids tickets more than what middle average family used to back in late 70s but still, choices will have to be made if it’s worth going or not. And the young generation is growing up on 5″ phone or 10″ tablet. Their eyes and mind are set/adjusted to it. They won’t crave to go to cinema like we did growing up. My daughters go to cinema few times a year but it’s more to hang out with friends and watch some silly horror movies versus going for a cinematic experience.

Some will show up for NTTD but not for wonder women. And you won’t have NTTD releasing every week. So let’s not talk and make judgement as if there’s a sort of event film like NTTD releasing every week.

Once again, i’m not against cinema but i’m wise enough to know that there’s this thing called OTT where there’s huge library of movies and shows available at finger tip which is convenient as well as cost effective.

Let me dumb this down little.

Having a dinner at nice 5 star restaurant is a great experience but how many of us do that daily/weekly?

Most likely none of us are, we save that for special occasion like birthdays, anniversaries, etc…

Cinema experience will become like that for many where they will go see some big event films like 3 times a year.

    • Great post, Jay

A few things I’d like to point out — the nett figures for Bond films are suspect. Boxofficemojo has the gross figures. 10.9 mill USD for Skyfall and 8.35 mill USD for Spectre.

Now multiply the gross figures with the average USD-to-INR price in 2012 and 2015 respectively: 53.4 and 64.13 respectively.

We get 58.2 crores gross for Skyfall and 53.55 crores respectively.

Now if we account for inflation and let’s assume the best case scenario for NTTD being as successful as Skyfall, the gross figure for NTTD becomes 100.7 crores.

Assuming the same nett to gross ratio as Skyfall, that amounts to around 78 crores in 2021.

Given that NTTD is going to end up close to 27 crores nett, the business is roughly 1/3rd of its potential maximum.

Applying the same extrapolation to Bell Bottom, its pre-covid total comes out to be around 100 crores.

So tl;dr — The nett we see right now is about 1/3rd of its pre-covid equivalent. And that’s the best case scenario!

      Like

      • Now with Maharashtra opening, the nett figures might approach 50% of pre-covid levels — again in the best case scenario.

But with releases stacked up, the final figures are bound to be affected as well.

1/3rd the market seems about right.

But we won’t get an opportunity to verify this as MH opening up will create a different benchmark.

So Sooryavanshi will create a completely different set of metrics. Also it will be a festival release.

A lot rides on Sooryavanshi. All the later releases like 83, Jersey in December will be hoping for some kind of fireworks on Diwali at box office.
