  1. Over the past year big screen cinema lovers across the globe have been extremely fortunate to witness 3 exceptionally well made IMAX entertainers in Tenet, Shang Chi & Bond. Hopefully many more to follow starting with Dune…

      • Had it done 50 cr nett, it wud had been a semi-hit.

Btw, it cudnt even double its week 1 total by the end of its run. So much for good trending or wom. That too when it had no competition whatsoever.

And doing well in OTT does not mean it has done well in theaters. As discussed, BB is a theatrical flop. No point in beating up a dead horse.

          Like

        • 18.72 cr according to BOI and 18.55 according to BH.

        • That’s still a decent trend considering the first week was 8 days long. The starting number was way too low for it to have any chance of being a success but the acceptance is surely better than the likes of Gold.

        • I think most people knew it was streaming on Amazon within a month of its release.

Not many films are able to double their first week business. As I’ve pointed out in the previous thread, the real value of Bell Bottom’s nett figures is around 100 crores.

A 12x return over the first day figures is definitely above average. That doesn’t mean the film hasn’t incurred losses for the distributors. Both things can be true at the same time.

          Like

        • Pink for example, a multiplex hit, could not double its first week business.

But it did make 16x its opening day figure. After starting above 4 crores as well.

          Like

        • I think the opening of Bell Bottom was below par.
Next people who have Amazon Prime are going to wait – this didn’t strike me as a big screen extravaganza kind of film.

Also the 12x multiple of day one here – it is based on Thursday day 1 which would be lower than if this released on normal Friday. Friday opening would have been higher and that multiple lower if total the same.

Indeed not many films double collections – that is the business model. With no OTT release for Bell Bottom it may have gone past 40Cr.

Audiences (the general ones, not bloggers or enthusiastic filmogoers like here) just won’t pay for a non techi film when it’s available in few weeks time.

Why pay for a few tickets on something you’ll watch in few weeks? Plus you are already paying for Amazon Prime! I do not think people are this desperate to run to theatres.

NCB claims we don’t have proof but we are talking to ministry of external affairs and see if we can get hold of that person Aryan was talking and we’ll try to figure out the involvement in drug trafficking and till then we don’t want him to be on bail.

There is no drugs. no rave party.. no chat about rave party in whatsapp and now the case is about conspiracy and International drug trafficking.

This is also showing clear evidence of law doesn’t mean sh!t, agency/gvmt can play with rules to play with ones life. Nothing new tho.

Some here who are perfectly okay with this, you know exactly why they’re okay with it.

On same token, i’m surprised by how many are actually taking aryan side from rajat sharma to shatru to KRK to sekhar gupta (i thought we had few fans of shekhar here? i guess not in this case), there’s definetly support there because all sane minds can see how this is a clear which hunt and misuse of law.

A special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) court on Thursday (October 14) rejected the bail application of actor Armaan Kohli and two others arrested in a drug seizure case. Kohli was arrested following a raid by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) at his residence during which banned narcotics were allegedly seized. The actor had argued that only a small quantity of drugs was allegedly recovered from his possession, and as such he was entitled for bail.

Exactly. There is no logic to support this travesty of law. I would have been fine if they had arrested him with drugs test or even his medical test being shown as consumed but this is beyond witch hunt. No one arrests someone for having drugs, that too charas. That is give warning and leave kinda drugs.

They just wanted Aryan to spend 1 more week in jail. No other reason not to pronounce decision at that moment. It’s not like judge will be sitting at home over the holidays and reading files to give decision.

NCB knows, all they can do is get folks arrested as long as they can and delay bail. They have no case to keep them arrested on the case basis. Just to keep extending this bail game and get free publicity for NCB.

This is why india is in state it is because people are having this type of mentality. Ok to arrest and abuse anyone as long as it’s someone/group (be it political or religious group) you don’t agree with.

        • Well, if you did read the arguments that the NCB’s lawyer has provided you would have noted that drugs were found inside Aryan Khan’s friend’s shoes.

Aryan Khan has admitted (confessed) that the drugs were both of them. Hence they are arguing that this is NOT a case where drugs haven’t been found in person.

          Like

        • And these are the lawyer’s words, not mine. This is a counter argument to the claim that no drugs were found on Aryan Khan in person, hence he is blameless.

There is a confession made by Aryan Khan and I’m sure the new lawyer (apparently SRK threw Maneshinde out) will argue that it was a forced confession. That’s how lawyers argue for their clients. No biggie here.

And I did not post my views on the matter at all. Just pointed out arguments made by the NCB’s lawyer — why they think Aryan Khan’s bail application should be denied.

I haven’t posted anything on Aryan Khan myself — only after master made passive-aggressive remarks against me that I was forced to point out the other side of the story.

I don’t visit this place with a one-point agenda to crucify someone — it’s hardly something of interest to me. But if someone tries to bully me or passes snide remarks against me, I won’t stay quiet, that’s for sure.

Yet another Punjabi film Honsla Rakh takes a bumper initial while Tamil film Doctor scores well too. Even the Delhi circuit has come on board with the success of these Punjabi films and as of now its just Bollywood’s incompetency that’s preventing the CI, CP-Berar and Bihar/Rajasthan circuits from maximizing their potential.

    • @ Sanjana, Like i had said earlier, i’m not that well versed of South India culture, politics, etc.

Few movies i’ve seen that you’ve suggested did have a hint of caste. Is it still an issue or are these events of past? I assume it’s still an issue but at very low level. Doesn’t make it right but i would like to believe that this type of thought process is no longer there at mass level.

      • The curious thing is, South industries in recent times have made a lot of movies dealing with caste, even highly commercial industries like Telugu and Kannada. It’s odd that there’s barely movies like these in Hindi.

      • Unfortunately caste is still thriving due to votebank politics, , inherent rootedness, identity issues, benefits. Caste is not melting away even after conversions.
Films from these parts showcase this vividly.
Caste is as strong as religion for many. Just like sunni, shia. Just like catholics and protestants. But castes are too many unlike 2 or 3 divisions as in other religions.
If we accept castes without casteism, the problem will be less and can be tackled to some extent.

        • I can’t even imagine how it would feel to be of lower cast, basically you’re treated like sh!t. I mean i myself would be okay with situation if it means survival but imagine seeing your children in same situation and being treated like garbage.

Sad but there’s caste system in many forms thru out the world.

Leading ladies are more interesting and they are ready to experiment.
Akshay, Vicky, JA are more into patriotic films. Salman and Hrithik action and Srk romance with some action. Looks like LSC covers some patriotism, romance and some adventure. And Ranveer and Ranbir are also in the race and may give some stiff competition to the older brigade.

He reveals how he handled things differently with Fardeen and Bharti and how his strategy resulted in both parties getting bail within a few days. Drawing parallels between Aryan Khan’s case and the ones he’s handled in the past, Ayaz tells us how things could have been handled differently in Aryan’s case. Excerpts:
‘Fardeen was out on bail within three days’

In Bharti Singh and her husband Harsh Limbachiyaa’s case the NCB found 80 gms of contraband in their office and home. It was much more than what Aryan’s friend Arbaaz Merchant had on him. What I did in their case as well was that I did not allow them to go to NCB custody. They were produced in court on Sunday, I immediately applied for jail custody, although the NCB wanted to take custody. Not for Bharti but they were insisting on Harsh’s custody. They could’ve investigated a lot through Harsh, so I made sure I got them jail custody on the first day, so that they are out of NCB custody. Getting them into JC meant we could get bail the next day, now the case is pending. I didn’t want either of them in NCB custody, because you don’t know what angles can open up in the investigation. Sometimes you can fabricate evidence, sometimes you can plant evidence, sometimes you can knockout statements. Right or wrong can only be proved after the trial.

    • Well said Sanjana. 👏 Can’t believe a super rich kid living in one of the worst jails and their food, surroundings and unhygienic restrooms and that too with the criminals. I have this habit of not using public restrooms ever anywhere and hygiene OCD. Apparently Aryan is avoiding jail food completely and living on biscuits to avoid using restrooms. Main point is if you are not sentenced guilty by court, one shouldn’t be sent to jail custody sharing jail with real hard core criminals. But the case has been biased from the word go.. Yes, using drugs is illegal but it does not make one criminal, there’s a huge difference. I said the same thing last year for Rhea and stupid case was being made to punish her in the wake of SSR’s suicide which many people in media and general wanted it to be murder. There’s no way they could have sentenced Rhea and only game was and even now is to delay bail. That is the ‘jail term’ NCB is targeting with all these celebs. The longer time in jail without bail is their aim. Getting real justice or sentencing them via proper court case is secondary.

The box office may continue to ebb and flow between weeks, but for the first time in nearly two years, there’s a steady stream of buzzy films on the schedule. Throughout the rest of October and early November, movie theater marquees will feature “Halloween Kills” with Jamie Lee Curtis, director Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” remake and Marvel’s “Eternals.”

“Going forward, business will continue to build, but it will be uneven,” predicts David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “Three steps forward, two steps back.”

They just don’t make actresses like her anymore. I saw that stupid dance show’s clip where Manoj Muntashir – what an erudite man – once mentioned about the NAMAL HALAAL incident. Apparently, Smita wept a lot and was very, very depressed after shooting for the AAJ RAPAT JAYE TOH HUME NA song; thinking that she had downgraded to an extreme low after acting in films directed by Shyam and Govind and the art-house kings. She kept crying the whole night and cussing herself for agreeing to do the song. On the sets the next morning, Amit saw her reddish eyes and being the sensitive Libran, immediately assessed what the situation was. He just told her one thing: MURTI MANDIR MEIN HO ya FOOTPATH KE BAAJU MEIN, MURTI KI AHEMIYAT KABHI KUM NAHI HOTI. LOG DONO JAGAH HAATH JODTE HAIN.

After announcing her divorce from superstar husband Aamir Khan, filmmaker Kiran Rao is set to start afresh in her career. PeepingMoon.com has exclusively learned that Rao is gearing up to kick off her second directorial this December, over a decade after her first directorial venture ‘Dhobi Ghat’ that starred Aamir, Prateik Babbar, Monica Dogra, and Kriti Malhotra in the lead role. Her ex-husband Aamir Khan will produce this yet-untitled film under his banner Aamir Khan Productions continuing their professional collaboration even after their separation.

“Kiran Rao is returning to direction with a story that’s rooted in a village. It’s a social comedy-drama revolving around two girls and one boy. Kiran has completed the scripting and is currently in the process of finalizing the star cast. She is simultaneously also locking the shooting locations in North India to begin the production by the end of December. Actor and producer Tanaji Dasgupta serves as a creative producer on this yet-untitled film,” a source close to the development informed us.

Kiran’s new film is said to be diametrically different from her first directorial Dhobi Ghat which was set in the city of Mumbai and narrated the story of four different people whose lives get entwined by fate and luck. She is apparently planning to shoot this film for over a month and showcase it at various international film festivals next year. Kiran has established herself as a champion of independent cinema over the years and this film would also reflect the same.

Didn’t like the initial portion of the movie. I felt like Kangana real life was creeping into reel life. Got better as the movie progressed. For me, kangana works best when she’s not shown as know it all. Also, a slow motion scene every 15 minutes doesn’t work for me. There was a time when hero entry in the film would be presented like that where you get all the seeti and taalis, that’s awesome but a scene like that thru out the film kind of kills the mood for me.

Arvind was pretty impressive, he portrayed being calm, collective, confused brilliantly.
The guy who impressed me most was the guy who played his manager, not sure if it’s his real voice but the guy was great with voice modulation and dialogue delivery.

No knowledge about true events but loved the way MJR/Jaya were shown and their relationship. At no point it was presented like a lust or cheap relation. There was true love, dignity there.

Some of the dialogues were very good.

My book also talks about my journey, my times in NSD (the National School of Drama) and FTII (the Film and Television Institute Of India), my theatre work, my films, my love life, my mistakes, my weaknesses and my tributes to friends who helped me, my teachers who influenced me and my mentors like Govind Nihalani, Shyam Benegal and Girish Karnad.

I was rejected from the FTII, as I was very unkempt and skinny. I did not look like a hero, villain or comedian.

But Girish Karnad and (veteran actor) Jairaj said I should be taken based on merit, not looks.

My first film Aakrosh brought me to the notice of all the good filmmakers of India.

Satyajit Raysaab called me after seeing the film and offered Sadgati to me.

Ardh Satya was my lottery, and I thank Bachchansaab for that.

Govind Nihalani had first gone to Bachchansaab, but he was very busy. So I got the role.

    On Amitabh Bachchan:

    Amitabh Bachchan is an institution.

He has been an inspiration to an entire generation of actors.

He is not much older than me, but he’s six or seven years senior to me in the film industry.

I was at the NSD when I first saw his films, Anand and Namak Haram. That gave me hope that some day I will get to work in Bollywood.

I didn’t realise that one day I would work with him.

It was my dream come true when I worked with him in three films, Dev, Baabul and Lakshya.

The Battle at Lake Changjin – $769.0M (still running strong)
        Detective Chinatown 3 – $686.3M

      • A very sensitive film. I still don’t understand why it didn’t do that well in India. [And I believe not liked much by the Indian audience.] Of course, I agree the wife-beating scenes were painful to watch. But Aamir did the balancing thing by putting in some humor through his character. Fine performances by Meher and Zaira, especially Zaira. Too sad we lost Zaira to the regular fanatics: she was one promising actress.

Even TOH was over or hyper promoted.
Hope this time he will avoid promotions and let the film speak for itself. A small success is better than a big flop.

        • Only problem is that LSC is a 100 cr budget film, not a 15 cr budget film like Secret Superstar. Economically, it cant afford to come without promotions or go to direct OTT. Also, a lot depends on how the movies slated for release from Nov to Jan fare at the box office.

Directors like Rajiv Rai, Umesh Mehra, Samir Malkan etc showed sporadic brilliance whenever they casted Akki. However they could not make a movie with a solid script.

Those younger days of Akshay are now gone when we saw glimpses of brilliant stunt in average films.

He still does manage to kick a punch like very few can. Sooryavanshi looks like his last action drama film.

Ijaazat and Drishti. while Ijaazat did not drag too much and kept a good pace, Drishti was meandering like a lost sheep trying to find its way home. Dimple was gorgeous and acted brilliantly in Drishti. A very young, very skinny Irrfan had a small but significant role.
These 2 and Arth had similar templates but Arth was commercial, not arthouse.
In Ijaazat, Rekha wore sarees in south Indian style tucking the pallu and not showing any skin. Her voice and especially dialogue delivery did not betray her roots. Rekha was a pleasure to watch. While Dimple in Drishti wore lovely sarees and beautiful salwar kurtas with style. Dimple was stuck in such arty roles and her commercial roles after bobby did not get much success while less talented ones got a better dealing.

A mob of over 150 people allegedly pelted stones on vehicles and hoardings on a road in Maharashtra’s Osmanabad city to express their anger over an objectionable post against Mughal emperor Aurangzeb on Facebook, police said on Wednesday.

This is the state of India right now. You can’t criticize an Islamist bigot who killed his own brother, imprisoned his own father, beheaded the Sikh Guru Teg Bahadur and imposed a tax (jaziya) on non-muslims among other things.

Aurangzeb was an Islamist who massacred Hindus and Sikhs because they were kafirs/infidels. He also imposed a tax on non-muslims apart from desecrating Hindu temples and converting them to mosques.

So yeah, they are quite similar.

In case of the Maratha invasion of Bengal, the attacks were not based on religion or race. People were massacred because of money. The Bargi killings were horrible and reeked of evil but they did not have a religious/racial cloak surrounding them.

Also Hitler was more against the Jews than Aurangzeb was against Hindus, as most of his generals were Rajputs, and not all the Saif Tanhaji type “Rajputs”.

        • It’s difficult to judge history with parameters of today.
I always think those centuries 14th-19th where Europeans colonized everything available, slavery was rampant, chopping heads in public common was part and parcel of success and survival back then. Judging that with what we know now is far easier. In centuries time people may look upon the late 20th and 21st centuries as selfish because of how the planet has been abused under our stewardship.

Back then some things were heinous by today’s standards but back then they were par expectations. Basically evolution IMO. Learn from that past.

I feel same on racism wrt to BLM. It exists today and even by today’s standard it’s terrible. But it’s not as crazy as 300 years ago. So deleting or cancelling history is silly IMO. Just learn from it, teach the facts and offer solutions for today.

          Liked by 2 people

        • It’s not about cancelling history — it is what it is. My problem is with people who eulogize or worship historical figures who were tyrants or mass murderers.

The only reason why Hitler is so heavily reviled is because the oppressed community, in his case, is very vocal and strong. Not only strong as a nation but they are also quite a strong force in the US. Judging by numbers alone there were many more people who were killed in the Communist purges and yet the communist leaders are not stigmatized as much.

My point being, there can’t be different standards for historical figures, or history itself. One can’t say XYZ was evil personified but ABC was not — just because ABC existed in a different era.

Richard the III is always going to be a villain and he occupied the throne by killing the princes in the tower. That’s all that there’s to it.

        • Hitler was stopped in his tracks/attempts in 45. There is no way to know where he ends up or what we look like today.

I think there are different standards, they evolve daily.

Who is to know that in 200 years….a descendant of Saket or I or Naveen might say everything people did in 21st was wrong. We might all be doing wrong now!

The standard is pretty much relative to that time no? All I’m saying in the race for colonial powers in those centuries- that’s what power was about.

Today that power takes different forms.

Fine if I compare Stalin to Hitler – I don’t have numbers. Even if Stalin killed X% more (sad in itself), Hitler was attempting to take over countries but was STOPPED. So we don’t know where Hitler ends.

Either way I hope we both agree they were wrong and we wouldn’t do that today. People should be aware of what happened and of course we shouldn’t celebrate it.

Also in today’s world I doubt there’s as much celebration around Churchill in the way you suggest. In Britain he’ll be revered as he’s considered as the man who stopped or went some way to stopping Hitler. Rest of world probably think of him as different.

No, that’s not the crux of my argument at all. In fact, as I’ve responded to Jay, there were far many more millions killed in the Communist purges but those leaders are hardly as much stigmatized as Hitler.

My point of comparison between Hitler and Aurangzeb was based on their rationale for killings — one did it because he hated a particular race. The other did it because he thought of Hindus and Sikhs as kafirs or infidels. This is why they are similar.

Seems your whole argument is on foundation of religion.

No, the whole argument is about not praising or eulogizing historical figures who were mass murderers or evil.

And it makes no sense to name cities or roads after them. Same as it wouldn’t make sense to name a street or city in Bengal after Winston Churchill, after what he did during the Bengal famine.

What Hitler was doing was a threat to all Mankind and many governments.

These are different evils. One is an act against one owns people and the other against another sovereign nation. I think that is a consideration. It’s not to say one is worse than the other. But the impact of Hitler is faced more widely and is more mainstream and public.

Even our History classes focused on Hitler more than Stalin. That’s natural. Stalin is considered an ally against Hitler in this topic. So I’m not surprised people overlook Stalin’s own monstrosities over Hitler’s.

Now imagine Hitler won WW II and became all powerful. He then systematically wiped out all Jews from every single country on Earth.

They are both evil but who is worse between the two?

My wager is, most people will vote for the person who selectively kills a group of people than someone who kills at random.

Some might even sympathize with Thanos because he was trying to unburden the finite resources of the planet!

        • Firstly who the hell is Thanos? Marvel villain? Who is the equivalent name in world history?

I can’t imagine anyone worse than Hitler. His sole goal was not elimination of Jews. He wanted to a new world order where Germany ruled the roost at the expense of Britain and France.

So I’d say Hitler in a heartbeat as his motivations were bleak for most of the world IF he got what he wanted.

You can see what Hitler wanted. Europe first, then systematically if technology allowed it he’d have gone after US.

Hitler was doing what he was doing by interfering with borders – for many that’s a line not to cross. It’s enough for warfare. The other 2 is massive disaster of different kind. Despicable tyranny leaders.
I don’t know what countries who colonised fall into but they are just as bad if not worse. Comparing centuries of colonised death vs the big 3 in 1900s is not simple. Again I would say the European colonial powers were doing what seemed like common, normal practices back then. Just like US/Britain doing the slavery stuff.

At some point in history stone deaths may have seemed normal to majority.

The world keeps evolving, part of that process is not to forget (or cancel) the past – just learn from mistakes. Unfortunately in this century the Western powers have fought 2 pointless wars in Afghanistan and Iraq – probably in the long run doing more harm than good.

These superpowers never learn. The WW’s had to happen- sometimes you have to fight. I’m not anti war – some wars are justified. But many aren’t.

As Sanjana mentioned we don’t know what happens behind the iron curtain Soviet Union or China. With Hitler we did and the world burned him down to hell thankfully.

And unfortunately so many things happened in 20s, 30s that aided Hitler further.

New Borders, some stupid League of Nations nonsense and handicapping Germany forever – throw in the Depression in 30s…Hitler had so much ammunition to influence his people.

I truly get where you’re coming from and agree with you as far as renaming some streets and places is concerned but sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture and in grand scheme of things, India is truly going backward in so many ways.

I mean if one has to keep looking at current world with lens of what happened 400 – 600 years ago, it’s a sad situation. That means nothing has been accomplished, no growth in thinking capabilities, etc…

And there is a greater well calculated force joining hands to accomplish this, from gvmt, to media to entertainers. To keep making people think all of the problem today are due to what happened 400 to 600 years ago. Enemy is same as 400 – 600 years ago. They’re not putting out message on how to take India forward but keeps spending time rhetorics.

The world has begun to see this hence our PM got lectured by USA VP on world stage and our PM couldn’t respond with anything at all, and to add to that, no world leader really wanted to meet him the following 2 days. That should tell you something. So while we can keep thinking a particular way, the general feeling thru out the world is different about India and it’s not trending in right direction at all.

India is a great diverse country with so much history, we should celebrate that instead of having Ekta Kapoor TV serial mentality and always thinking negatively.

Not to pick on you, but you are quick to jump on some stone pelting and show so much passion about it, but that passion wasn’t there when 8 people get killed, WHY?

Just like you show so much passion for drugs but nothing for guthka which kills more Indians every year??? No passion for alcohol which kills more innocent people by drunk driver??? No passion for cigarette which kills more people every year than drugs and it also kills innocent people too due to second hand smoking???

I’ve made this point many time here in past that we as humans have really gone back ward, we are worse than what we were in lets say 70s. Perhaps it was same in 70s too and I was just too young to realize it.

        • Not to pick on you, but you are quick to jump on some stone pelting and show so much passion about it, but that passion wasn’t there when 8 people get killed, WHY?

I have been very much critical of the present government many times and I think the nation has regressed a lot during the last 7 years. I firmly believe that any form of protest in a democratic setup is valid and is in fact a fundamental right. Any government or regime that tries to suppress it is absolutely in the wrong. I might not have said as much then but this has been my stance since day one.

Just like you show so much passion for drugs but nothing for guthka which kills more Indians every year??? No passion for alcohol which kills more innocent people by drunk driver??? No passion for cigarette which kills more people every year than drugs and it also kills innocent people too due to second hand smoking???

I have spoken about this too. Gutkha, cigarettes and alcohol don’t kill instantaneously and I wouldn’t endorse their use anyway. Anything that’s harmful for the human body and mind is wrong, period.

But as far as drugs are concerned, they are much more harmful. They destroy people and their families — an overdose can kill you instantaneously. And more often than not, the effect of drugs is irreversible. If a person becomes an addict it’s very difficult to get rid of the habit.

This is my pet peeve of sorts — people quote Obama as having taken drugs. For every Obama who got rid of the habit, there are thousands or even millions of black people who couldn’t. Statistically speaking, it’s a very bad example. The average life expectancy of young black people in the US is something like 16-17 years. In bad neighbourhoods especially, and the major reason for that is the use of drugs. This is actually well documented.

In short, gutkha, cigarettes and alcohol don’t impede the functioning of the brain, at least not instantaneously, but hardcore drugs kill the mind, if not the body. But I will never say it’s ok to consume gutkha, cigarettes or alcohol either. They are both bad but the degree of ‘badness’ is different and that’s why my response is also more alarming when it comes to drugs.

        • Also, I’m not saying that all of India’s history should be erased. The Mughal empire is part and parcel of India’s history and it shouldn’t be erased.

What I’m objecting to is the fact that the bad apples in the Mughal era shouldn’t be treated like heroes. And the same yardstick applies to other rulers as well — as Aman pointed out, the Maratha invasion of Bengal killed around 400,000 people. This is inhuman and barbaric as well.

But if a facebook post on Aurangzeb can incite riots then that’s truly a sickening thing. The people who took to the streets and pelted stones are the ones who are living 400 years in the past — they are the ones who are not looking forward.

And they are the ones who are denying the fundamental right of a free citizen — to voice his/her opinion. One can agree or disagree, that’s fine but in a civilized society, there’s no place for riots based on a single person’s opinion.

        • By profession, i’m an analyst so for me most things are viewed in numbers.

I’m (was) from a small town in Gujarat, For every one person you find doing drugs, you’ll find thousand eating guthka and smoking. Alcohol isn’t at that level but you’ll find at least 300 alcohol consumer for every one drug user.

So, in reality, the damage guthka, smoking and drinking is doing, drug is no where near it. it’s probably 1 death due to drug for every 1000 death due to guthka/cig/alcohol.

So i can’t stay silent on cause of thousand deaths versus one, same as i can’t stay silent on 8 people getting crushed to death versus some stone pelting.

          Like

        • But you are talking about a small town in Gujarat. The situation will be completely different in a city like Bombay.

I’m also going to quote a few numbers here:

Over 2,300 people died due to drug overdose from 2017-19 in India with the highest number of such fatalities recorded in the age group of 30-45 years, according to the data by the National Crime Records Bureau.

Below the age of 14 years, as many as 55 children died due to drug overdose. Seventy children died in the age group of 14-18 years.

A total of 624 people died in the age bracket of 18-30 years

As you can see, children below the age of 14 died due to drug overdose. 125 deaths up to the age of 18!

Gutkha, cigarettes and alcohol will not cause people from this age group to die! People don’t die before the age of 30 because of pan masala, cigarettes or alcohol!

As for the stone pelting issue, it was a direct response to other posts here alleging that the media/journalists are doing a great job in raising the Aryan Khan case. I was in fact pointing out the media’s hypocrisy. As is evident by their collective silence over a despicable act.

But in the Aryan Khan case, many were alleging that he was being targeted because he is a Muslim. The so-called left brigade which doesn’t hesitate to play the religion card whenever it’s convenient for them.

        • Also, I’m going to quote directly from the World Drug Report for 2021:

Drug use killed almost half a million people in 2019, while drug use disorders resulted in 18 million years of healthy life lost, mostly due to opioids. Serious and often lethal illnesses are more common among drug users, particularly those who inject drugs, many of whom are living with HIV and Hepatitis C.

Despite the proven dangers, drug use persists and, in some contexts, proliferates. Over the past year, around 275 million people have used drugs, up by 22 per cent from 2010. By 2030, demographic factors project the number of people using drugs to rise by 11 per cent around the world, and as much as 40 percent in Africa alone.

And here’s this for those who support weed consumption:

There is often a substantial disconnect between real risks and public perception. In some parts of the world for example, cannabis products have almost quadrupled in potency, and yet the percentage of adolescents who perceive cannabis as harmful has dropped by as much as 40 per cent, despite the evidence linking regular use to health problems, particularly in young people, and despite the correlation between potency and harm.

    • Some gems about Mughal emperor Aurangzeb:

here was a ruler whose own brother (Dara Shukoh, whom he beheaded and served the head to his father) was seduced into ‘false books’ (Upanishads).

The signs of his fanaticism were visible very early in his life. For instance, in 1644 (when he was a prince posted in Gujarat as a viceroy), he converted a newly built temple of Chintaman into a mosque (Mirat-i-Ahmadi, page 222). He also, reportedly, desecrated the temple by slaughtering a cow in it (source: Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency (Volume I, Part I, page 280).

Age often mellows people. But not Aurangzeb. In 1698, at 80, Aurangzeb deputed Hamid-ud-din Khan Bahadur to destroy the temple of Bijapur and build a mosque (History of Aurangzib, Volume III, page 285, Jadunath Sarkar).

An elaborate—but not exhaustive—list of temples destroyed by Aurangzeb (which includes some famous temples like the Somnath temple, the Kashi-Vishwanath temple, the temple in Mathura, to even tiny temples like the Khandoba temple in Aurangabad near Satara, and hundreds of temples in Rajputana) is available in primary sources such as Maasir-i-Alamgiri and Newsletters of the Mughal Court.

In a grotesque display of his intolerance, after he destroyed the Dehra of Keshav Rai in Mathura in 1670, he had the idols brought to Agra and buried under the steps of the “mosque of the Begam Sahab”, in order to be continuously trodden upon (Maasir-i-Alamgiri, page 60).

At 85, Aurangzeb demolished the temple of Vithoba in Pandharpur (Mogal Darbarchi Batmipatre, Setu Madhavrao Pagadi, Volume III, page 472). He wanted to demolish the temple of Mahalaxmi in Kolhapur (ibid, Volume II, page 86). He destroyed the temples in the villages of the Deccan where he went and erected mosques on those lands. These references have come in the Mughal court newsletters. Aurangzeb also demolished temples on several forts in Maharashtra, such as the temples on Vasantgad and Panhala. The foundation of the mosque at Vasantgad was laid by Aurangzeb with his own hands (ibid, Volume I, page 86).

The list of his religious excesses is so astonishingly long that an article can never do it justice. Besides demolishing temples and imposing Jaziya (a discriminatory tax on Hindus), he even sought to curb Diwali celebrations by ordering them to be held only under some restraints, and outside bazaars.

Hitler’s followers didn’t wait for him to die to start naming stuff for him, as is usually customary. (Luckily for him, as his legacy turned out.) Within just a few months of Hitler being elected chancellor in 1933, his supporters in cities across Germany began naming streets for him, with the count eventually getting above fifty. This Berlin square, the former Reichskanzlerplatz, was one of the most prominent. If Nazi architect Albert Speer had been able to re-design Berlin as he’d planned, Adolf-Hitler-Platz would have been the western end of the East-West Axis, one of the city’s grand boulevards.

Google apologized for the error, explaining that the square’s historical name had probably been added to their database as an alternate name, but with the chronology confused. Being the world’s new de facto map authority has been tough for Google. In 2009, their maps accidentally ceded the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh to China, which led to a minor international incident. The next year, Nicaraguan troops actually invaded Costa Rica on the strength of an incorrectly drawn Google Maps border.

I am worried because I have plenty of charas loving friends and I don’t want them to be caught up in this sort of mess.
If anything, this guy’s phone must have so many chicks like Ananya P simping all over him.

  100. Drugs cause much damage to the lower rungs of society than upper ones. Many poor drug addicts resort to stealing to finance their habit. While cigarettes, gutkha is relatively cheaper, drugs are expensive affair for the poor and the middleclasses. Even alcohol is cheaper but alcohol is destroying many homes.
Rich people are not affected much by consuming drugs unless they make it a daily affair. And they can afford it and they have elite medical help at their beck and call.
Nowadays children from micddleclass and also some executives do drugs as seen from newspaper reports.

How does drugs affect the brain?

Drugs interfere with the way neurons send, receive, and process signals via neurotransmitters. Some drugs, such as marijuana and heroin, can activate neurons because their chemical structure mimics that of a natural neurotransmitter in the body. This allows the drugs to attach onto and activate the neurons.10-Jul-2020

    • This is for those people who were saying it’s just Charas or Weed:

Cannabis products have almost quadrupled in strength in the United States of America and have doubled in Europe in the last two decades. The percentage of Δ9-THC, the main psychoactive component in cannabis, rose from about 4 per cent to 16 per cent in the United States over the period 1995–2019, and from about 6 per cent to 11 per cent in Europe over the period 2002–2019.

Δ9-THC is responsible for the development of mental health disorders, in long-term, heavy users of cannabis yet the percentage of adolescents perceiving the regular use of cannabis as harmful has decreased by as much as 40 per cent during the same period.

Scientific evidence has demonstrated the harm to health caused by regular use of cannabis, particularly in young people. Evidence from surveys suggests a link between a low perception of risk and higher rates of usage. This is the case not only in Europe and the United States, but also in other parts of the world.

    • This is the bit about drug trafficking:

Drug markets on the dark web only emerged a decade or so ago, but the main ones are now worth at least $315 million in annual sales.
Although this is a tiny fraction of overall drug sales, the trend is upward, with a fourfold increase in annual sales between the beginning of the 2010s (2011–mid-2017) and more recent years (mid-2017–2020). The expansion of online drug markets to social media and popular e-commerce platforms further suggests that their accessibility is widening.

While cannabis dominates darknet sales, marketing on the so-called clear web often involves NPS and substances used in the manufacture of synthetic drugs, including precursor chemicals.
