That is Andrew Garfield, and the film Tick, Tick…Boom is getting terrific reviews for his performance…one of the most under-stated Superman ever along with Tobey Maguire..
Watched Hollywood remake of Dangal. Will Smith did great in Aamir Khan’s shoes and gave his own touch. Girls also did fine and elder one did very good but still Zaira was better in the original version. Wife role is same as original as side and coach also shown little as negative as original. Overall still a good remake and Will Smith did great as father and coach and can win some awards unlike Aamir Khan who lost to (un)forgettable performance by Akshay in Rustom. Overall Recommended.
Richard Williams as the father and infact, all sports’ folks fathers were in discussion amongst movie -buffs during DANGAL’s release. Hollywood copying from Bollywood? Aamir should be proud!
By the way, is there an official acknowledgement for DANGAL or just passed off as the same landscape and character arcs in a different sport?
Akshay Kumar was fantastic in Rustom. His body language, expressions, dialog delivery and getup was top notch.
A good biopic with an interesting story, Rustom was one of his best performances.
Lets not undermine him because he got an award.
Aamir in Dangal was brilliant. I think that year had few more memorable performances including Manoj Bajpayee’s.
Haar ya jeet is part of life. But what is good is good.
I had to google the movie name where Akshay kumar got National award, it’s that forgettable. He’s as good for Akshay kumar standard and not National Award standards. No comparisons at all with Manoj Bajpayee or Aamir Khan. Just giving National Award doesn’t make it a great performance. It’s good if you realize that and not debate even on that issue.
SJ2 will give a real value of what the current market condition is. Anything less than 80 cr means market is operating at lesser than 30% pre pandemic and vice versa.
I dont think LSC is an expensive film that needs a solo holiday release. Only way Aamir can get a solo is if he pays off other producers. Why would one move away when getting 75 cr for KGF2 would be difficult in a non holiday period even if it releases solk.
Aamir paid 100 cr to Bhediya producers to shift date. LSC budget is now 200 cr. He will pay another 100 cr to KGF guyz and then LSC budget will be 300 cr, same as that of Pathan and Tiger 3.
After watching AtrangiRe trailer my excitement for Akshay kumar’s Rakshabandhan has increased a lot!! Before working with Akki, aanandrai gave him cameo in atrangi re and after working with him he made solo movie with #AkshayKumar ..

Satyameva Jayate 2 had a low start in the 15-20% range though collections at single screens in places like CP Berar, Bihar and Nizam / Andhra were better. The problem is the dull start at multiplexes across India.
Atrangi re should have released today or tomorrow in theatres. It would have given stiff competition to the 2 releases as Akshay is hot property after Suryavanshi success. Strike when the iron is hot!
Not bad for a Thursday release, a working day.
Reviews for SJ2 is surprisingly better for its genre. Usually such films get 2/5… here its more than 3/5.
Wom is also decent to good.
I think that Bollywood market is polarised. Maybe audience is waiting on event films like Sooryavanshi, 83, RRR, Prithviraj and the ones that fall into other category may well end up like BNB2.
Better to see how medium sized films perform before shooting from the hip on what’s good/excellent/extraordinary.
Otherwise soon we’ll have people call Bell Bottom opening extraordinary.

Satyameva Jayate 2 movie review: John Abraham strides through this thing with his standard mix of fixed-frown-and-swinging-fists. Only once or twice does he do the bare-bodied superhero who can take on all comers with a teeny dimpled nudge-wink.

Watching ‘Satyameva Jayate 2’, I had a sharp sense of deja vu. In the worst way possible. Because this flick featuring John Abraham In And As Vigilante No 1 could have given solid competition to the terrible films of the 80s, which stitched together sequences of action-comedy-songs without overly bothering about such things as plot and characterization.
And Taran Adarsh equating Milap Zaveri with the likes of Prakash Mehra, Manmohan Desai and even Rakesh Roshan is the biggest joke! (Despite me being no fan of Desai & Roshan)

Also, looking to gift my 10 year old nephew with this…but this is bloody sold out everywhere…I don’t understand video games and never played one in my life…let me know if this is still available somewhere…
Satyameva Jayate 2 had a dull first day as it collected in the 3 crore nett range. The collections are very dull at multiplexes almost everywhere. The bigger multiplexes have not got an audience at all and they these moved through the day was like what was happening before Sooryavanshi.
A slap for the likes of Taran Adarsh and others who indiscriminately give multiple stars to pathetic movies. This kind of push does not work everytime.
The likes of Taran Adarsh, Sumit Kadel et all have proven not only to be utterly shameless sellouts, but also with extremely poor understanding of the BO.
One hopes this is the last we see of Mrs. T-Series and Zaveri saab.
Yes, compared to the 20 cr opening of the first one this is extremely poor. Should have at least opened to double digits. Straight flops for Bollywood with BnB2 and SJ2. They shud stop making silly sequels now.
Tremors Felt In Kolkata Too
Tremors were felt across Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram and Assam. Witness accounts on European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre’s website said that the quake was felt as far away as Kolkata.
Recreating the 83 match moments will be boring imo. Everyone is aware of them. Behind the scene story of a cricketer and his personal struggles make more gripping movie i think. I am sure Jersey will trump over 83.
Let the trailer come out after 4 days. If the trailer is good, the movie will be good.
This generation does not know much about 83. For them it will be interesting. The older generation will want to know how much justice is done to the characters apart from kapil Dev.
And there is Deepika Ranveer lovestory also.
The catch depicted in the teaser is one of the greatest catches ever taken. And this is the catch that got Viv Richards out who was looking dangerous, as usual, on that day.
Iconic moments like these can never be forgotten. It’s like watching Dhoni finish the 2011 World Cup with a six.
83 is a classic underdog story because no one gave India a chance. Don’t think the players, in general, believed they could win.
And for some strange reason, mostly due to Kapil’s leadership I guess, India was unstoppable in the World Cup. They defeated the Windies, the greatest team of that era, TWICE. Once in the round-robin league and once in the final.
Then there’s the match with Zimbabwe where India were reduced to 17 for 5! Before Kapil came in and smashed an unbeaten 175 and won India that game. Legend has it that 3 cricket balls lost shape that day when he hit a total of 6 sixes!
This is the stuff that legends are made of. And it’s fact, not fiction!

Being a sucker for romance hasn’t made me enjoy most of Bollywood love stories that are either unnecessarily melodramatic and sappy or ludicrous, taking your intelligence and common sense for granted. However, one that has stood the test of time is Veer Zaara, one of the very few love stories SRK can take pride in despite being the unofficial king of romance, a title he wears on his sleeve.
Veer Zaara is probably the last Hindi film with which innocence in love died its natural death, post which the industry ushered in Gen Z love stories that were more of romcoms rather than out-and-out romances, ones where physical attraction/casual sex was as much a contributing factor to the idea of romance as promises of everlasting love.
VZ wasn’t universally loved by critics and audiences at the time, who were just beginning to tire of SRK’s choice in roles. But they probably failed to see how Yash Chopra, directing his last ‘good film’ brings out your inner romantic, makes you shed tears at several junctures and makes a film that ticks all the correct boxes of what a good love story should be like. Even in his later years, he showed his son how to make a truly good film that needn’t rely on gimmicks to achieve its ambitions.
Aditya Chopra wrote Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Veer Zaara and JTHJ 🙂 I must dissent by saying that DDLJ is far superior in issues of script consistency and pace than any romance his father made.
The Aaya Tere Dar Par sequence is very well directed, despite the film’s sluggish pace at places, the occasional scene and song really elevate the film, although one wishes Shreya Ghoshal’s vocals in the music.
DDLJ is in a different stratosphere and belongs to the category of ‘very few good romances’ that are a part of Srk’s middling oeuvre. I mentioned this above. Other than this, Adi Chopra never made anything half as good as his father’s best known films. But the thing I liked about VZ was its old school idea of platonic love and romance, which we hardly get to see now, probably because we’re quick to judge and we don’t have filmmakers attempting out and out romances any more. Such a film would be heavily criticised today. Not just because of its outdated treatment but because anything that even hints at promoting peace between communities or countries is seen as deshdroh
Watched Chhorii on prime. It was good in the first half. The simplicity of village life was depicted well. And Mita Vashisht was creepy. Nushratt was sweet and acted well.
Sooryavanshi (Hindi) and Annaatthe (Tamil), the two blockbuster Diwali releases, have breathed fresh life into the Indian film industry, which was devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The films have fired up theatres, and in the first week have jointly collected over Rs 400 crore (Rs 4 billion) worldwide.
According to latest available numbers, the Akshay Kumar-starrer Sooryavanshi, which released on November 5, collected Rs 201.44 crore (Rs 2.014 billion) globally in its first eight days till Friday.
Antim – The Final Truth has collected in the 4.25-4.50 crore nett range which is a reasonable collection if the film can get some solid growth on Saturday. These type of films do struggle for growth as business is better in mass belts which fall a little on day two but the multiplexes have potential to go up on Saturday and if that happens it could be on for a good Sunday.
The industry will see the Salman Khan factor and the film was promoted as a Salman Khan film and will have expected far better collections but majority of the audience is too shrewd to fall for that today. Yes no doubt the audience will be bigger but no way is the film opening five or six times more than it would have if there was no Salman Khan.
Basically the film is in a decent position after day one if the film can have a good trajectory over the weekend. If the film is not able to move then it is just about the first day boost that Salman Khan has given and the actual film has nothing much to offer.
Antim – The Final Truth has affected the collections of Satyamev Jayate 2 which was expected and the film is down 40-50% with huge falls at bigger multiplexes. Bihar remains the best circuit for the film and is actually doing fair business and collecting more than bigger circuits like East Punjab, Rajasthan, CP Berar and West Bengal.
With the rise of OTT, the medium and small budget films will suffer theatrically. Only star studded tent poles will do well in this situation. Next BO numbers will come with 83 and Jersey.
Tadap Day 1 might do well and cross 5 cr.
I trust Milan Luthria and NGEMovies to have made a fanstastic remake of cult mass movie RX100.
TaraSutaria is looking fresh and stunning while Anna’s son Ahan a ⭐ in the making.
Less than 5 cr is less than expectation even if Salman was doing a cameo but here he is in parallel lead with presence throughout the movie. So should be 6cr+ esp with the best review his movie got after Sultan.
Antim opens at 4.25cr, Satyamev Jayate 2 starts at 2.75cr and B&B 2’s intial was at 2.5cr. All would have flopped probably in normal times, but these figures are shockingly low. The worst JA performers around 3-4 years back opened at around 5cr. SJ opened at 20cr!
Probably shows that things are nowhere near back to normal. And that Suryavanshi performed a miracle.
John’s RAW opened at 5 Cr in April 2019, SJ2’s trailer got a terrible reception. I’m not entirely surprised that the opening is this bad. The second day has actually dropped.
Antim’s opening day is quite poor, it should have been higher than 10 Cr given that the WOM has been quite positive. You can’t compare a mass gangster film to Dear Zindagi. But it has the potential to grow over the weekend.
Bunty Aur Babli 2 opened just as well as any Saif or Rani Mukerji film has. There is no new insight from that film.
Fair enough about B&B2 (it still is a YRF and a sequel and Rani on her own did much better in Mardaani 2).
SJ2 has started at around 60% of films like Force 2 (5 years back), RAW, Rocky Handsome. Batla House started at 14cr and SJ opened at over 20cr! So no matter how bad the trailer was (SJ’s trailer was as woeful), it would not have made merely 3cr in normal times.
One would also have expected Antim to start with double digits, (at least) in normal times.
So, the under-performances of these films are huge, compared to what they may have done 2 years back. In 2019, we had films like India’s Most Wanted (with Arjun Kapoor) opening at over 2cr.
Antim was never promoted as a Salman starrer while none of the rest are event films to begin with. I doubt films with poor trailers or low face value would stand a chance in these times.

Brilliant and absolutely historic. Dont know ehen this reception to a movie would be repeated, not only in boxoffice terms but the way it has been acknowledged by exhibitors as soul reviving.
Sooryavanshi continued to collect well on its fourth Friday despite competition from two new releases. The film collected in the 80-90 lakh nett range to take its total over 185 crore nett. The drop is around 25% from the day before and if it could have stayed at a similar range to Thursday then 200 crore nett would have still be on.

Satyameva Jayate Sees Huge Decline On Day Two

Satyameva Jayate 2 saw a huge decline on day two which was pretty inevitable as a new film released. The film collected in the 1.75-2 crore nett range. The big multiplexes of metros saw huge drops of 50% but pockets like Gujarat, CP Berar and Bihar saw lesser drops ranging from 10% to 30%.
But it hardly matters as collections have dropped to levels that are far too low and now it will be a huge task for the film to get back to day one levels on Sunday.
The two day business of the film is under 5 crore nett and it the best case scenario looks a 10 crore nett four day weekend and that will not be easy considering the drop on day two and as some mass pockets did not drop much on Friday, the drop for them could come Saturday
The only little positive for the film is Bihar which is playing out as a 7.5% circuit when the norm post pandemic has been under 2%. Sooryavanshi has an all India ratio of around 3% for Bihar.. The two day collections of Satyameva Jayate are as follows.
Imagine if
Maharashtra is closed,
Gujarat is closed,
UP is closed,
Rajasthan is closed,
Delhi and Haryana is 50% with night curfew,
east Punjab is 50%,
MP is closed,
bihar is 50%,
And most theatres were closed for 18 months.
Now lets figure out Antim’s NBOC.
Bell Bottoms did 1 cr less. This shows magnitude of Bell Bottoms now.
If Antim makes 12 times from here like Bell Bottoms did in extremely adverse scenario, in my books then it will be a hit.
BTW, bell Bottoms was Thursday non holiday release, not friday release like Antim.
I think considering the scenario Bell Bottoms faced and then what it eventually did….most violently undermined Bell Bottoms in this forum of learned analysts.
Even Jayshah, who is impartial aggressively downsized Bell Bottoms. He should have rised above star politics and like Vajpayee should have accepted the business as good., not excellent but good for Bell Bottoms.
Thats because very few are ready to assess the real impact of pandemic. Most dont find its needed as they are analysts and indirect stakeholder. However i am quite keen because even my business got impacted and am following the recovery and keen to know the real value vs non pandemic value.

You are trying to portray Bell Bottom as a HIT. If you stopped at staying it’s done relatively better than BNB2, Antim and SJ2 it’s acceptable (on just collections). But it’s not a HIT. That’s the difference.
If you said 30Cr was acceptable I doubt anyone bothers to debate but once you start claiming it’s successful, HIT, bla bla you just embarrass yourself.

I hope this is a blip but, sadly, I can see a lot of films being complete wash-outs in the next few weeks while in 2019, we talked about it here, things were working at rate of practically 1 succesful film every week.
It is about Salman’s stardom. It is declining from Bharat and then Radhe. If Suryavanshi can open like a storm what prevents Antim to open atleast a quarter percentage of the former? Boi is giving lame excuses saying that it is not full Salman movie while every critic says that Salman got the best scenes and best punchlines and he even acted much better. Looks like Salman’s core fan base is disillusioned with him. Now only multiplex audience can come to his rescue.
I think in normal times a real Salman Khan starrer would still have opened well. That he has been declining is obvious. No debate in there.
But in no way would a typical Salman Khan starrer in normal times have opened at 4.5cr. There are 2 obvious factors here:
1. Antim has Salman in a cameo (like Aamir in SS and SRK in DZ).
2 More importantly, the current prevailing circumstances.
The opening, if you look at the circumstances (especially the latter) is not disastrous if one compares to SS and DZ. It would have done much better in normal times, that is a given.
My main apprehension is that a lot of forthcoming releases are going to underperform as things are not at all back like old times.
A lot of people who’ve seen the movie indicate Salman has nearly 1 hour of screen time. Also think about the genre. This should have opened way better!
A film’s success depends on 3 things. A very good film, a big star and his fan base. In Salman’s case, his fanbase made even a film like Race 3 work to some extent. His fanbase has declined over time. While Akshay’s fanbase has increased and makes his film work irrespective of circumstances. Annatthe worked because of rajni’s loyal fanbase.
83 and RRR may face either big success or an average success. These 2 films will test the waters. Prithviraj has akshay and s o it can sail through because of his loyal fanbase in certain circuits.
Akshay is a much more interesting actor than Salman.
Tiger 3 will be his litmus test.
I still feel Antim will do well because of wom.
Nothing is permanent. There is nothing like permanent stardom. What goes up will come down one day or the other.
When we attribute the success of a film to a star, then the burden of failure must also be borne by that star.
Ironic that when mass stars start good acting, their core fan base do not appreciate much. They dont want to see a manoj bajpayee in a salman khan. They want Salman’s swag and style and larger than life presence in his films.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan was universally liked film by both masses and classes. Not only by core fanbase.
Sultan was also liked but not as much as BB.
ETT was fun with good songs and dances.
Those were the days when Salman ruled like a King.

Looks like he is succumbing under pressure of delivering ATGs and thinking of propping his film with a younger star. He should not be so insecure, at least not before reaching 60.
As for freshness, his films are always different from each other. And if he is really concerned about AKP, he shud turn director for the banner.
He is already ghost directing, giving inputs. He always appreciated Ranbir over his own nephew Imran. Maybe he saw something very special about Ranbir.

Antim – The Final Truth has the second highest first day of the year as the market comes back slowly. The top ten does see many films with low collections due to the pandemic but this should change by the end of the year.
Antim – The Final truth got a boost with Nizam / Andhra as it collected 55 lakhs nett in the circuit adding to the solid collections in Mumbai and CP Berar taking the all India collections to a fair 4.75 crore nett. Nizam / Andhra is a 12% circuit for the film which is much higher than normal and is actually a very good number. The top ten opening days of 2021 are as follows.
This coming from a Salman Khan fan is a biggie. Acceptance is always a choice to live happier.
#Sooryavanshi 3rd week collections indicates that it would’ve done ₹ 280-300 cr bizz in pre covid era. It also suffered a loss of around ₹ 15 cr from Maharashtra circuit alone,had MH operated with 100% occupancy,sooryavanshi Lifetime biz would’ve ended up around ₹ 205-210 cr.
With all star-studded dialogues and pleasing all; the Sardars, the Marathi manoos, the northern Bombayites; the ruling government, the Bombay Scotland Yard, Bhai, oh Bhai, with poor acting (???) comes up with this initial??
Take it or leave it, Akki is THE king right now. Although I hated SOORYAVANSHI to my core, one can see the yawning gap between him and other stars. It just cannot be that folks ventured and abandoned their fears for Sooryavanshi and suddenly got fear-struck when it came to Antim thinking it would be their Antim Samskar.

With due respect, Antim was never marketed as an outright Salman film. And Sooryavanshi is a 3 hero film with almost 20 minute roles for Ajay & Ranveer in a Rohit Shetty sequel. Monumental difference in comparison.

Question is where does the base settle down and for how long can you keep at your base and how often you get good roles.
In a good movie like Antim, Salman’s base has come down significantly. Blame it on producers for making Antim look like a small film at the beginning. But hey, producer is Salman himself. So why did he chose to make his full length role look like a cameo in the promos.
The new base hopefully is temporary. His next is after an year. He should have had a comeback sooner.

Antim – The Final Truth will show an upward trend on Saturday as it does business in the 5.25-5.50 crore nett range. The jump is not huge but it was crucial that the film did not drop. These type of films tend to be flat or drop on day two and here was the added factor of Salman Khan brining in the opening day audience so a drop would have been no surprise.
The film has actually held on day two which means now the actual film has a chance as its about the film and not the star pull. Now that the film did not drop on Saturday it can aim for a good Sunday and decent first weekend collections.
The metros have shown healthy gains and even Delhi city where Mumbai underworld films have little appeal. Some of the bigger cities of Punjab are also up where these films hold even less appeal than Delhi city.
There will be falls in places like Nizam / Andhra where Antim – The Final Truth was very good on day one and places like CP Berar and Bihar wher it also collected well but a mass market like Gujarat is showing gains which is a good sign . Maharashtra should also be up where the film had solid first day collections.

Overall Antim – The Final Truth is in a decent position after the first two days and the next two days will tell if the film can be a success.
Boi will make a silly case of it being a success. Like Naveen on Bellbottom. But in reality it will be a flop to average. This wont be a BO hit like DZ or SS.
See it all depends on Distributor’s cost and OTT price that Antim gets.
Bell Bottoms was sold on commission. Producers took it on their chin with a hope to test the waters. What came out was shocking due to pandemic. Good thing was, exhibitors did not lose and distributors also did not lose. Bell bottoms got 60% distributor share from week 1, so distributors and producers got average theatrical returns. But still producers got good deal from OTT to make Bell Bottoms a clean HIT.
Antim however is not sold on commission. There is a very high (looking high now) fixed distributor cost. Also OTT would determine if producers also loses money or get profits.
Yes, no one else does any dumb analysis like calling BB a Hit or claiming Antim is same as SS/DZ or that 4 cr opening of Antim is okay! Its a shame that such moronic comments get posted here in SS.
Antim till the last week was not projected as a Salman movie. On some TV show last week, Salman point blank claimed it’s his movie. I’m sure munna will know the clip.
Every review I’ve seen he’s in the movie for 1 hour. He’s in the poster.
The difference is there is no leading lady, no EID release, no silly selfie song, the usual bhai getup is not there.
Is SS getup the usual Aamir getup? Is DZ the usual SRK getup. Those were films working on WOM. Not some front loaded opening.
Antim opening is poor. So is SJ2.
All these medium/small films may struggle till overall confidence is there. Just like BELL BOTTOM.
SJ2 is a disaster, Antim might be a hit. I think the Salman Khan family must be very happy with the result, the Bhai-in-law has now found some acceptance among the masses.
Below 20 cr weekend for a film with Salman in parallel lead (1 hr screen time) is extremely poor and nowhere near to Hit business. One can put a case that it shud be doing 17-18 cr on a daily basis itself given the Salman factor. Anyways, it has to trend very well to get to hit business, which i dont see happening.
As I said, before, the comparison for Antim should be films like SS and DZ where the big star eas not the main lead, but had a pivotal part. We cannot compare it with Tiger or Bharat because everyone knows it very much is an Aayush vehicle primarily.
We also need to take the current context into account. So, both DZ and SS made around 60-62cr in normal times. Time will tell how much Antim does but the current context cannot be ignored.
The genre is front loaded kind here but the trending is decent enough to hope that it can sustain.
Either way, I think it will take some time before things get back like in 2019 where even ‘smaller’ films like Lukka Chuppi were threatening the 100cr net mark.
However,, SJ2 and B&B2 are washouts. No doubt about that at all.
I guess that 83 and Jersey will test the waters once again this year. If they under-perform, then I fear a lot for the releases of early next year.
Rahul, you need to stop your silly comparison of Antim with SS and DZ. Aamir had a 20 min cameo in SS while DZ had SRK for 30-40 mins. Here Salman is not playing such a cameo and is a parallel lead with 1 hour of screen time.
Next factor is the genre. Antim is masala action genre which is BO friendly. SS was a social drama while DZ was a coming of age story of a girl but had a romantic angle involving SRK. DZ had Aliya as the lead and with SRK’s cameo it shud have ideally done a lot more than SS, where Zaira was the lead.
Anyways, in the end SS and DZ did 63 and 68 cr respectively and were small hits. Antim due to its genre and Salman’s parallel role shud be doing a lot more than these films. Sooryavanshi has shown tat the audience is willing to go to theaters if something decent is being offered. So considering everything, Antim opening in the range of SS is a poor opening without any doubt and the trending is also nothing good with Sat being just 5 cr while Fri was 4 cr.
Sun may be 6-7 cr for a 17-18 cr weekend total. But as I said it shud be doing that amount on opening day itself given Salman’s 1 hr presence and the action genre. Its a colossal disappointment everything considered. No one is expecting it to open like Tiger 3 (40-50 cr day one), but 4 cr opening for Antim is good? LOL
Marcus, so according to you counting minutes is the key and if you pit Antim as a similar vehicle as Tiger, then I can’t do anything about it.
At the end of the day, it was Salman in a pivotal role and not the main lead, everybody is aware of that. Do you honestly think that a Salman Khan film starts at 4.5cr even if he is in decline? The Tiger 3 figures will probably tell you how far from the truth it is.
As for genre, action masala probably ensures a better initial but content driven films trend better and do better at high end muliplexes. So, if action films were always destined to do better, as per your claim, then I am confused why producers are that stupid to not invest in them more and why there are more content films from Bollywood while there are so few action movies. How come those Ayushman Khurana movies are doing better and how come the likes of Sunny Deol have disappeared?

It’s the other way round. Action movies can open well but have to be appreciated all around as single screens collections tend to drop quickly and considerably after the initial.
In Antim’s case, it has not. So, while it has not performed wonders, there is some hope.
At the end of the day, it is not the genre, but the quality and acceptance of the audience that define the final collections.
I think both SS and DZ did reasonably well. Antim faces a tall to emulate them, especially with the pandemic. But if you look at trade’s prediction (even BOI) and even most people here, it was to be beaten initially by SJ2. Do you honestly think it was a Salman Khan vehicle, as you claim, it would be projected to be beaten initially by a JA film?
The fact is that Antim has opened way below what DZ/SS opened to. DZ day one was 8.75 cr. SS first friday was 9.25 cr. That was on diwali holiday but SS also did 8.5 cr on first Saturday and Sunday each. And this was against GA running to full houses.
Whereas Antim has done only 4.75 cr against a washout SJ2 on Friday and 5.5 cr on Saturday.
Its silly to expect Antim to do only as much as SS/DZ due to genre differences and length of superstar roles. But its even more idiotic to say Antim has opened like SS/DZ.
It has not. And it won’t be anywhere near close to them. They did well. But can we compare the context right now with Diwali 2017? Absolutely not. that is what I have been affirming. We cannot ignore the current circumstances at all.

And i never claimed SS will thrash GA. My expectations from SS was 💯 cr blocbuster but it turned out to be a 63 cr hit only. Just like i have said LSC can do 300-400 cr if it turns out to be as good as the original material. If it turns out to be an average film and does 100-200 cr, my expectations will not be at fault, just that the film wud disappoint.
If the market was that affected then Sooryavanshi wudnt be doing 200 cr now. As i said Antim was an easy 100 cr on paper prepandemic. Now it needs 75-80 cr to be declared a Hit. Starting from this initial its an uphill task. Calling it out as an under-performer as far as opening is concerned is only fair.
Winning an argument? What is there to win or lose? We are merely providing our own takes or opinions, even if we may be disagreeing with each other’s point of view.
1. I have said it repeatedly that action movies may open better but also tend to fizzle out quicker than content based movies.
2. If I do not know the difference between a 1 hour role and a cameo, then maybe you do not know the difference between a 1 hour role to a star vehicle.
3. Worse, you do not even seem to know the difference between Diwali 2017 and circumstances right now. Right now, we do not know to what extent or on what level things are operating at. Only time will tell. But who knows, may be a 4.5cr would translate into a 8cr opening in previous times. Maybe less, maybe more. At the times of BB, some people here were talking about figures like 30%, at the time of Sooryavanshi, others started talking about 70% of real business in previous times. I don’t know the methodology used. They most probably were wild claims. What is obvious, with hindsight, is that Sooryavanshi has performed a miracle and the rest looks less rosy. Probably 83 and Jersey will reveal the limited extent to which things are back to normal.
4. As SS and DZ, they did what I expected. Check it out, a week before release of SS, there were claims here that it will trounce G4. Even you claimed it will beat G4. When it did 62cr, I felt it did well, but some were disappointed that it was beaten by G4. Check those posts. I claimed it has done well and those previous expectations were unfair towards the film. Check it out. All is right here on this forum.
My final word ( at the risk of repeating mysellf): The bottom line is that I think the current business is still to a considerable extent affected by the pandemic. We don’t know to what extent. But we can’t ignore that factor. The pandemic may turn huge stars into nothingness as long as it is here. And it makes a big difference between a star vehicle and a film that is not one. There are unfortunately going to be a considerable amount of commercial failures coming up.
On the risk of repeating myself, let me state why your points fall flat on its face:
1. If action movies tend to open better than content films, then how is Antim’s opening (which even you have admitted is lower than SS?DZ) even okay?
2. If i dont know the difference between a star vehicle and whats not, then why wud i be saying Tiger 3 is expected to open at 40-50 cr while Antim at 17-18 cr?
You on the other hand, expect Antim to open like SS/DZ despite claiming to know the difference between a cameo and parallel role?
3. In Diwali 2017, GA did 200 cr. Sooryavanshi is doing as much now! You seem utterly confused about the market scenario right now and claiming Sooryavanshi is a miracle and what not. 83 opening will show the market potential once again. Poor films in between will bite the dust. No surprises there.
4. As I said my SS expectations were 100 cr+. I am least interested in stuff like GA. But yes GA overperformed and SS underperformed as per my expectations. That is primarily because SS turned out to be an average to good film instead of a masterpiece that i expected. Something like Raazi did 100+ cr a few months later. So SS cud also have done 100+ cr if it was really good to a brilliant film.
Bottom-line is that current business is no longer affected by pandemic to the extent you are claiming to be. With the rise of OTT it was always evident that small to medium budget films will suffer theatrically with changing viewing habits. Star vehicles will do regular business or slightly less.
What fun! Everyone from the actors to director to scriptwriter to music director seemed to be having the time of their lives. It gets tiresome and repetitive by the final hour, but no complaints. Made for the single screens, and watching this there must’ve been an experience of its own.

Let us drop SS and DZ reference and take Antim as a standalone.
The plus with antim is that Salman is getting praise for his restrained performance and saving the film from going SJ2 way. It is a good effort and we got some actors out of it. It is not due to pandemic but audience suddenly turned choosy after Suryavanshi.
JA should also stop doing ricdiculous stuff trying to prove himself as the ultimate deshbhakt. What is the connection between corruption and deshbhakti unless somebody sells the country for monetary benefits. Those 2 things should be treated individually like Shershah and viigilane films.
The audience rejected a well made Chehre when it appeared in theatres.

Everyone here agrees that in current situation only biggies will sail thru while smaller films will struggle. Problem is when some are praising flop collections using the pretext of pandemic.
See frankly, Aayush Sharma has not gained much at all from Antim, though his performance has been praised. But will he get a solo hero movie, i doubt it.

This is where maturity comes in. the main thing is there’s truly no real bar right now until you start getting apple to apple comparison, till than you can make bellbottom as a sholay of current times.
There’s a saying in USA lottery commercial, “You can’t win, if you don’t play”. this is where akshay is benefitting, he has a relase every few weeks so some will sink like bellbottom (which for you is sholay of current time) and some will be hit like sooryavanshi. no one else has big release or any release so there’s really nothing to compare.
We’ll have to wait until big films like RRR, pathan, tiger, lsc, hrithik, etc releases and then we’ll see but at that time you can get back to comparing grand total of akshay 8 films in a year to 1 film like LSC. :-
But you have to give credit where it’s due, akshay is playing and he had finished films waiting to release.
And to say Akshay’s success is sporadic and lottery like then look at boxoffice since 2016 onwards and more specifically post 2.0 onwards when he breached 150 cr and since then has been most consistent.
Bell Bottoms is more of exception and Sooryavanshi is more of what he has been doing mostly.
What i mean by lottery reference is that akshay is playing in sense he has a release like every other month, while mostly everyone else hasn’t had a release in couple years now. they’re not even playing.
Day 1: 4.3 Cr = 6.14 cr (if released in 2020 Jan)
Day 2: 5.3 Cr = 7.42 Cr (if released in 2020 Jan)
Clearly Pandemic effect is number 1 reason for poor collections.
Then is shoddy marketing by Salman Khan Productions.
Else, knowing Salman Khan’s box office pull despite his recent decline (remember he is still in Top 3 and maintains healthy branding via Big Boss/Frequent releases) would still get a 10 cr opening on a non holiday for a genre which is his forte.
Antim is a lost opportunity to make some money at box office and to deliver a Hit film. It shud have been completely promoted as Salman film. He has 1 hr of footage and the film seems to be decent too. What a waste!
We should compare Antim and Bell Bottom. Bell Bottom opened when the market was at 30% or let’s take 25% capacity for Naveen, it wrapped up at 32 Cr and now the market is at 60% capacity, so if Antim does double of Bell Bottom, it’s a hit right, Naveen?
I already told earlier Antim has a chance and that if like Bell Bottoms, Antim does same multiple of its opening (BB did around 13-14 times), then it will be a HIT if it gets same OTT as what BB got.
So Antim’s target is 50 cr to match BB’s trending. If it does, i will call it Hit. Some may call it average which i think will be fair. I am consistent with my ratings.
It has been sold to Zee at a moderate price. So it’s OTT is not as much as what Amazon paid BB. Zee will benefit because it now has a Salman’s movie in a parallel lead at half the price because SKP sold it as Salan’s cameo.

I always thought Antim is a small release. I think momentum towards Antim got built in the last week when Salman went all out to promote it on twitter etc. They pitched it as Salman’s movie and at par with Satyamev Jayate 2 which was a bigger film before. Overall SKP really played it in a confused way. The moment you make a release with 2500 screen, you are on with biggie. Ideally Antim should have been with 1500 screens as per what it was originally perceived.
I agree with your 2nd paragraph. That’s the key. The build up in last week is what confused everyone. But the reality is anyone who has seen the film says Salman is getting 1 hour. Hell no can he be considered inconsequential in opening.
The film was a part of a three film deal for Radhe which included Antim – The Final Truth and Kaagaz and the value of Antim – The Real Truth was around 15% which would be around 30-35 crore and this was to be covered by digital and satelite.
There are many factors involved. Did BB had to compete will masala movie like sooryavanshi that was going strong? did it have to compete with new movie releasing every week?

Tadap is releasing this friday and if decent, it will take antim and sj2 out of theatres…youth will go for Tadap since it’s youth love story film.
AkshayKumar’s Bell Bottom was released when theatres were not revived. It was released in 800 screens only without Maharashtra. Still it opened with 2.78cr and lifetime was 34cr. Undoubtedly, Bell Bottom was a HIT.
Your HIT tag is based on external, extenuating circumstances rather than economics or even industry trends. It didn’t even double it’s opening week total. You’re giving it the long rope treatment. Thats why i dont write off any movie so quickly. Antim has a good chance to become a success if Monday and weekdays stay with min drops and its looking likely it would do.
It shud have been 12,15,18 cr weekend specially when imdb is doing 8+. No way is this going to get to 75-80 cr and be a Hit after a mere 17-18 cr weekend. In normal times it shud have been doing 100 cr.
Antim needs to stay around 3Cr through weekdays and it will have a 30Cr first week. Then can it stay steady. I wouldn’t rule it out. A 50Cr finish will be good after the poor start. I don’t know the economics here. Budget seems to be 45Cr according to one site. It says average at 45Cr and hit at 60Cr. Those outcomes are in reach. But if achieved it will be based on poor opening/good run scenario. Still excellent if done. Better that way cos at least WOM suggests decent movie.
I was talking about the best case scenario for Antim (75-80 cr) based on current market potential. With the low opening it obviously wont reach there.
It still has to trend well to reach even 60 cr. But not sure if we can call it a ‘Hit’ at SS level of lifetime collections. No doubt its made with a controlled budget, but doubt if its budget is as low as SS’s 15 cr.

At lower levels you can easily get big swings. Also clearly SJ2 is a flop by Day 2. Screens have shifted to Sooryavanshi, an established film that has better WOM.

So please 4.75Cr is most definitely a poor opening when expectations started at 7Cr minimum. Most people expected 12Cr+ but it opened at 4.75Cr! Obviously bunch of crazy Salman fans out there.
It just shows one big opening like Sooryavanshi has given potentially unrealistic expectations. You need some solid data before forming predictions. Best to stay away till things are steady.

Antim marketing changed in lead up to opening. If they’d actually marketed this as Salman film from Day 1 – it could have opened big. Then also with decent WOM it could have sailed through.
I always expect the best case scenario for films i think may turn out to be good, be it SS, Antim or even Jersey. My predictions are usually on the higher side for these films (or lower side for stuff i am not interested it – like Shetty films).
But you are right that the market is too volatile now to predict stuff accurately. I hv learnt my lesson by predicting 75 cr total for Sooryavanshi based on BB’s performance and then 75 cr for Antim based on Sooryavanshi’s BO. So no more ‘predictions/expectations’ from my side.
Still think LSC can do 300-400 cr when it comes 4.5 months from now based on the ‘expectation’ that it will be as good a film as the original film. But no more confidence in that, and will watch it as it comes.
Also i hv burnt my fingers twice since Dangal on Aamir’s films by expecting 💯 + cr from SS and 400 cr from ToH. So dont want to expect the best case scenario for LSC anymore, as its not like everything that Aamir touches turns out to be gold.

TOH expectations were based on coming together of Aamir and Amitabh under YRF banner with D3 director. The combination looked great on paper but Aamir’s bipolar lead character did not go down well with the masala audience.
The trailer and song promos of TOH were frankly not great. Specially the trailer was criticized a lot for shabby vfx work.
Dangal trailer was good but did not look like an upcoming ATG.
Anyways, dont think LSC trailer is coming anytime soon.
Also one should also separate BO expectations and personal appreciation of a film.
If a film works for you, then the rest should not matter as much. It may not turn out to be the hugest grosser ever, but if it does enough to engage you and being memorable for you positively forever, then it is enough. The BO records are the bonus there.
I absolutely loved Khakee. It probably remains the best Hindi cop film for me, personally. That it under-performed at the BO is a disappointment, but it does not make it a lesser film at all for me. It probably was ahead of its time, or maybe people did not understand it, or the genre was not liked.. I don’t know. But for me, it is one of those rare films where practically every single scene (except for a song that had no place in there) was well done, the performances of everyone were top notch, the characters arc, the editing, cinematography, dialogues and BG score were near perfect. Rajkumar Santoshi put his heart into it and it was hard hitting.
Chasing records and huge huge collections often comes the expense of quality.
I have high hopes on RRR, LSC and Prithviraj (more because of Dwivedi and Akshay Kumar and despite YRJ). I hope they turn out to be good films. RRR does not need to beat Bahubali’s record for me. It needs to create the same emotional and dramatic impact. That will be more than enough for me.
It’s why a good film will always beat the box office game long term.
I’m sure Khakee won that Akshay Kumar world cup. Just shows you can keep getting hits but the best films will eventually outlast everything else.
For Salman for every Bodyguard type opening, Bajrangi Bhaijaan is by a distance his best movie in past 2 decades.
Personal appreciation is something v personal and different from the BO game. I liked ToH quite a bit, but the universal panning of the movie left a bad taste in mouth. Also for a film to be a winner in the long term a lot of people need to like it even if they did not watch it in theaters. Lot of people loves Khakee. Rahul is just one among them. Acceptance at some common level is needed for shelf life of a film. Thats where BO is important in most cases for good films, it shows enuf people spent their hard earned money on viewing it theatrically.
I think even for an actor there may be a certain film in which he puts his heart into it and it does not work for the audience. That film may remain like his own, misunderstood but favourite child.
A friend of mine met Sunny Deol in London at around the time of Apne. He met him as a fan. In what was supposed to be a brief encounter, Deol casually asked him about his favourite film. My friend told him, it was JP Dutta’s Yateem. Sunny Deol was surprised. Yhis drawed his attention. I guess he would have expected names like Ghayal, Ghatak, Border, Gadar or other big hits of his. He asked my friend to sit down and he asked “Why Yateem?”. And they both spoke about Yateem for some time and even became quite familiar after that and they still are.
So, for a actor, there probably is a film he rates, others have not and it remains his personal favourite. Millions of others may rate something else of his, but these won’t matter as much.
Even I liked Khakee quite a lot, but both its Box office and its imdb rating left me quite surprised. I’m still not sure why this film didn’t do even as much as Ghatak, or why it doesn’t have much cultural resonance.
Although I must say it’s a bit too dialogue-heavy, and the film itself maybe lacks a touch of lightness?
Sony and Marvel Studios have given an early Christmas gift to Spidey fans. The third film in MCU’s Spider-Man franchise, No Way Home, will hit Indian theatres one day earlier now, on December 16.

In other news, No Time To Die has crossed 758 million worldwide and is looking to end its run at around 775 million. It has comfortably beaten F9 despite the latter ratcheting up 200 million in China.
It’s a great achievement because after a long time a non-Marvel film has taken the top slot at the worldwide Box Office (Chinese films excluded). It’s probably not the best film for Daniel Craig to bow out but that didn’t deter Bond fans across the globe. It has now broken Spectre’s record in the UK, without adjusting for inflation. With inflation, it’s behind Spectre.
It has also been running at #1 on the PVOD platforms in the US for the past 2 weeks, where one can rent it out for $20. That potentially will take its US total above $200 million at least. Not bad for a film that got delayed twice since the beginning of the pandemic.

I dont think films will stop releasing. If they do so, the backlog will be too much and OTT is the last option for any self respecting filmmaker. Omicron or no Omicron.
I think booster shots can handle Omnicron, hopefully, we see accelerated vaccine making, the IPs being broken and more for a safe getaway from the risk without shutting down or death.
Deaths are mostly a by-product of Health facilities being overwhelmed. If the Omicron variant evades vaccines it could result in more hospitalizations, leading to more deaths in the long run. That’s the biggest concern.
I know of some cases (in India) where people have been in hospital for more than 2 weeks but died. The body didn’t respond to the treatments. In India, many of the deaths probably could be attributed to lack of facilities in April-May time frame. But in US after last year onslaught at start of pandemic, things are okay in terms of percentage available beds in ICU but thee are still deaths.
Based on articles Omicron symptoms are mild; hopefully it is like lambda variant which has not created havoc like delta.
I am traveling in December; I was on the fence for Booster shot but with travel and more concerns, finally scheduled Booster shot this month (All these news play with your mind!).

New Delhi: Doctors in South Africa, where a new coronavirus variant of concern ‘Omicron’ has been found, have been studying symptoms of this new strain on COVID-19 patients and they have now made certain observations.
Symptoms of Omicron variant:
Patients infected with this strain show extreme tiredness. This is not limited to any age group. Young patients also show extreme tiredness, according to Angelique Coetzee, chairperson of the South African Medical Association.
There is no major drop in oxygen saturation levels. Drastic drop in oxygen saturation levels was seen among patients during the second wave of the pandemic in India, for example.
Patients infected with Omicron strain have not reported loss of taste or smell, which are known symptoms in patients infected with other strains.
Patients of Omicron variant have, however, complained of “scratchy throat”.
Most patients of Omicron strain have recovered without hospitalisation, say doctors.
Pfizer and BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine: Noting that they are not sure whether their vaccines would work against new COVID-19 variant ‘Omicron, Pfizer and BioNTech promised to develop a new vaccine against the strain within 100 days.
Based on the information available so far, Professor Andrew Pollard, the British scientist who led the research underpinning AstraZeneca’s coronavirus jab, said Saturday that existing vaccines should work against the new strain, but that would only become apparent after more research in the coming weeks. “It’s extremely unlikely that a reboot of a pandemic in a vaccinated population like we saw last year (with the Delta variant) is going to happen,” he told BBC radio.
Prof Pollard, who is the director of the Oxford Vaccine Group, said if required, “the processes of how one goes about developing a new vaccine are increasingly well-oiled, so if it’s needed that is something that could be moved very rapidly.”

Bell Bottom release scenario –
800 screen release with no Maha, Guj, Mp, and several other states open and other states at 50% and night curfew.
My calculation of 20% market at the Bell Bottoms makes Bell Bottoms get a multiple of 5. So 32×5 = 160 cr nett.
Problem is no credible trade analysts has done this. Of course these are argumentative but doesnt mean that pandemic correction is not done to compare apples with apples.
Now one can say market was 15% or 50% but there is jo way one can get away giving a verdic for Bell Bottoms without doing this analysis.
I then used this to correcly get the numbers for all other releases done during the time.
When Maharashtra 50%, Gujarat 100%, MP 100%, Bihar 50 to 100% , Delhi 50 – 100% opened, etc the market was still at discount.
This is when Sooryavanshi released. For me market was still at 40% discount / lower.
Very soon Maharashtra and all other states will become 100% open. But still this year i would say market would become 80-85%.
Probably if things remain free or rumours of fear of pandemic…then itnwould become 100% but i doubt its going to happen soon.

This is before the release and i thought the same.
But post release reality sunk in esp how big markets of Maha / Guj are and how with only 50% theatres in delhi, up etc the market is actually smaller.
So it was still an over expectation. Analysis if done now would be retrospective.
Maha/Guj were bigger because Sooryavanshi or Antim were more rooted films in that ethos. Tanhaji made almost 50% of its gross from MH, because it was a tale specific to that state. Films like Airlift, Baby or Bell Bottom had no such special factor.
Sooryavanshi collected a decent 55-60 lakhs on its fourth Monday to take its fourth week total in four days to 4.75 crore nett. The film is looking at a fourth week total of 6.25 crore nett which will give Sooryavanshi a four week total of 191 crore nett. Thereafter there will not be much coming and maybe it can add another 5 crore nett for a final total of 196 crore nett,
Antim – The Final Truth has held very well on Monday showing a drop of around 36% from Friday with collections of 3 crore nett. The trend is very good for Monday especially for an action film. The holds were very good in all mass pockets especially Maharashtra and Gujarat.
Would have been nicer to see Sooryavanshi cross 200 cr. But the real speed breaker came in the shape of 2 releases which took away the shows.
Antim is now looking set to do 40 cr nett and more depending on competition every friday from here on. However Tadap and Chandigarh are WoM movies and wont impact shows of Antim to a large extent.

No, I bring it up when there is the need to realize that world is not fair for everyone and when especially mention business part of it. Imagine Aamir just saying is it okay to move out of country for kid’s growing and education(which is not at all that surprising 5 years later as many well to do families are moving out), there’s a huge cry. If someone is moving out to US, UK and settle down there it is PERFECTLY fine with me and everyone. Antim is doing rock steady business (at lower level).
Salman really should have started promoting this a month ago as his film and it would have done a very good business at high level since this is truly one of his better film that is not completely trashed by critics.
And before anyone says Salman has a small role in Antim — go watch the trailer again. The whole trailer is centred around him.
The film has been marketed as a Salman Khan film. Make no mistake about it — and the film’s abysmal opening is a direct reflection of Salman’s current standing. Harsh as it may be for Salman fans, the ones that have decided to still stick around after a decade of miserable films and even worse acting. Which is astounding and mind-numbing at the same time (for people to still care about Salman).
Unfortunately its not over yet. Salman luckily (for him) has the Tiger franchise film coming up with Yrf next year. That will give him some mileage to do some more crappy films in the near future.
Bollywood directors might as well start copy pasting a few of the MI/Bond/Bourne films for spy-espionage stories since this genre has been almost laughable in Hindi cinema thus far (War being the only somewhat passable commercial espionage film as Baby and D Day aren’t exactly entirely commercially appealing).
Boi is giving the real verdict of antim which is average.It will update bell bottom verdict to above average.Boi said the collections are low for bell bottom,but said antim collections are good.Some people thought bell bottom is flop which is not what boi said.Bell bottom made huge profits and antim made profits.Bb is a bigger success than antim.
It is good to be Akshay fan. If Antim had done 200 crores, you would have compared with Sooryavanshi. If it does 40 crores, you compare with Bell Bottom. If it had done 100 crores, you would compare with Gold and still support Akshay. Like there’s a movie for every range and every topic! 🙂
I don’t think Akshay is much of an actor (amazing at comedy though) but still need to give credit where it’s due – the fact he is able to pull of 150-200 crore grossers often enough after throwing out so many films is kind of amazing. No one in the world is doing that with this type of volume.

Watched Hollywood remake of Dangal. Will Smith did great in Aamir Khan’s shoes and gave his own touch. Girls also did fine and elder one did very good but still Zaira was better in the original version. Wife role is same as original as side and coach also shown little as negative as original. Overall still a good remake and Will Smith did great as father and coach and can win some awards unlike Aamir Khan who lost to (un)forgettable performance by Akshay in Rustom. Overall Recommended.

Akshay Kumar was fantastic in Rustom. His body language, expressions, dialog delivery and getup was top notch.
A good biopic with an interesting story, Rustom was one of his best performances.
Lets not undermine him because he got an award.
Aamir in Dangal was brilliant. I think that year had few more memorable performances including Manoj Bajpayee’s.
Haar ya jeet is part of life. But what is good is good.

I had to google the movie name where Akshay kumar got National award, it’s that forgettable. He’s as good for Akshay kumar standard and not National Award standards. No comparisons at all with Manoj Bajpayee or Aamir Khan. Just giving National Award doesn’t make it a great performance. It’s good if you realize that and not debate even on that issue.

What are expectations from SJ2 and Antim?
SJ1 did 80 cr. If market is operating at 15-20% less than normal, then SJ2 shud be doing 60-65 cr.
Antim has Salman as a parallel lead. In normal times it shud be doing 100 cr, now anything around 75-80 cr shud be good.

Sequels of hit mass oriented films do 30% more.
SJ2 should do 30% more than SJ1. This makes it 105 -110 cr nett in pre pandemic.
I agree market is at 30% discount. So it should do same as SJ1.
So SJ2 should be 80 cr nett.
Antim…cannot say. Dont see it going far.

Its eyeing 75 cr max..doubt if it gets more….so, dont think it would get a better date even if it means a clash with LSC.

Aamir paid 100 cr to Bhediya producers to shift date. LSC budget is now 200 cr. He will pay another 100 cr to KGF guyz and then LSC budget will be 300 cr, same as that of Pathan and Tiger 3.

‘BnB 2 will barely total 15Cr lifetime.
I think that Bollywood market is polarised. Maybe audience is waiting on event films like Sooryavanshi, 83, RRR, Prithviraj and the ones that fall into other category may well end up like BNB2.
Better to see how medium sized films perform before shooting from the hip on what’s good/excellent/extraordinary.
Otherwise soon we’ll have people call Bell Bottom opening extraordinary.
Sooryavanshi hasn’t underperformed IMO. It’s done excellent business.
Pre covid if it made 200Cr you could easily say it’s underperformed. But this is not an easy market to predict.
Though if Sooryavanshi can make 200Cr, likes of 83 shouldn’t have a problem aiming for that or more.’
It was in response to some Lallu fan on Facebook claiming 10Cr opening for Antim would be extraordinary.

The catch depicted in the teaser is one of the greatest catches ever taken. And this is the catch that got Viv Richards out who was looking dangerous, as usual, on that day.
Iconic moments like these can never be forgotten. It’s like watching Dhoni finish the 2011 World Cup with a six.
83 is a classic underdog story because no one gave India a chance. Don’t think the players, in general, believed they could win.
And for some strange reason, mostly due to Kapil’s leadership I guess, India was unstoppable in the World Cup. They defeated the Windies, the greatest team of that era, TWICE. Once in the round-robin league and once in the final.
Then there’s the match with Zimbabwe where India were reduced to 17 for 5! Before Kapil came in and smashed an unbeaten 175 and won India that game. Legend has it that 3 cricket balls lost shape that day when he hit a total of 6 sixes!
This is the stuff that legends are made of. And it’s fact, not fiction!

Being a sucker for romance hasn’t made me enjoy most of Bollywood love stories that are either unnecessarily melodramatic and sappy or ludicrous, taking your intelligence and common sense for granted. However, one that has stood the test of time is Veer Zaara, one of the very few love stories SRK can take pride in despite being the unofficial king of romance, a title he wears on his sleeve.
Veer Zaara is probably the last Hindi film with which innocence in love died its natural death, post which the industry ushered in Gen Z love stories that were more of romcoms rather than out-and-out romances, ones where physical attraction/casual sex was as much a contributing factor to the idea of romance as promises of everlasting love.
VZ wasn’t universally loved by critics and audiences at the time, who were just beginning to tire of SRK’s choice in roles. But they probably failed to see how Yash Chopra, directing his last ‘good film’ brings out your inner romantic, makes you shed tears at several junctures and makes a film that ticks all the correct boxes of what a good love story should be like. Even in his later years, he showed his son how to make a truly good film that needn’t rely on gimmicks to achieve its ambitions.

Aditya Chopra wrote Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Veer Zaara and JTHJ 🙂 I must dissent by saying that DDLJ is far superior in issues of script consistency and pace than any romance his father made.
The Aaya Tere Dar Par sequence is very well directed, despite the film’s sluggish pace at places, the occasional scene and song really elevate the film, although one wishes Shreya Ghoshal’s vocals in the music.

DDLJ is in a different stratosphere and belongs to the category of ‘very few good romances’ that are a part of Srk’s middling oeuvre. I mentioned this above. Other than this, Adi Chopra never made anything half as good as his father’s best known films. But the thing I liked about VZ was its old school idea of platonic love and romance, which we hardly get to see now, probably because we’re quick to judge and we don’t have filmmakers attempting out and out romances any more. Such a film would be heavily criticised today. Not just because of its outdated treatment but because anything that even hints at promoting peace between communities or countries is seen as deshdroh

Sooryavanshi (Hindi) and Annaatthe (Tamil), the two blockbuster Diwali releases, have breathed fresh life into the Indian film industry, which was devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The films have fired up theatres, and in the first week have jointly collected over Rs 400 crore (Rs 4 billion) worldwide.

Antim – The Final Truth has collected in the 4.25-4.50 crore nett range which is a reasonable collection if the film can get some solid growth on Saturday. These type of films do struggle for growth as business is better in mass belts which fall a little on day two but the multiplexes have potential to go up on Saturday and if that happens it could be on for a good Sunday.
The industry will see the Salman Khan factor and the film was promoted as a Salman Khan film and will have expected far better collections but majority of the audience is too shrewd to fall for that today. Yes no doubt the audience will be bigger but no way is the film opening five or six times more than it would have if there was no Salman Khan.
Basically the film is in a decent position after day one if the film can have a good trajectory over the weekend. If the film is not able to move then it is just about the first day boost that Salman Khan has given and the actual film has nothing much to offer.
Antim – The Final Truth has affected the collections of Satyamev Jayate 2 which was expected and the film is down 40-50% with huge falls at bigger multiplexes. Bihar remains the best circuit for the film and is actually doing fair business and collecting more than bigger circuits like East Punjab, Rajasthan, CP Berar and West Bengal.

Antim opens at 4.25cr, Satyamev Jayate 2 starts at 2.75cr and B&B 2’s intial was at 2.5cr. All would have flopped probably in normal times, but these figures are shockingly low. The worst JA performers around 3-4 years back opened at around 5cr. SJ opened at 20cr!
Probably shows that things are nowhere near back to normal. And that Suryavanshi performed a miracle.

John’s RAW opened at 5 Cr in April 2019, SJ2’s trailer got a terrible reception. I’m not entirely surprised that the opening is this bad. The second day has actually dropped.
Antim’s opening day is quite poor, it should have been higher than 10 Cr given that the WOM has been quite positive. You can’t compare a mass gangster film to Dear Zindagi. But it has the potential to grow over the weekend.
Bunty Aur Babli 2 opened just as well as any Saif or Rani Mukerji film has. There is no new insight from that film.

Fair enough about B&B2 (it still is a YRF and a sequel and Rani on her own did much better in Mardaani 2).
SJ2 has started at around 60% of films like Force 2 (5 years back), RAW, Rocky Handsome. Batla House started at 14cr and SJ opened at over 20cr! So no matter how bad the trailer was (SJ’s trailer was as woeful), it would not have made merely 3cr in normal times.
One would also have expected Antim to start with double digits, (at least) in normal times.
So, the under-performances of these films are huge, compared to what they may have done 2 years back. In 2019, we had films like India’s Most Wanted (with Arjun Kapoor) opening at over 2cr.
Let us hope the next releases do much better.

A masterpiece of a movie, stands the test of time alongside others like ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and ’12 Angry Men’. Stunningly written with drama oozing out of its every core: Every scene is gold in itself. This is Humphrey at his best with a superb ‘curt’ display of his talent using those one-liners; Ingrid looking ethereally beautiful; Peter Lorre as Ugarta, Claude Rains as Captain Renault, and finally, last but not the least by any stretch, Dooley Wilson as Sam, all wonderfully contributing to this wholesome movie. They just don’t make movies like this anymore…

Satyameva Jayate 2 saw a huge decline on day two which was pretty inevitable as a new film released. The film collected in the 1.75-2 crore nett range. The big multiplexes of metros saw huge drops of 50% but pockets like Gujarat, CP Berar and Bihar saw lesser drops ranging from 10% to 30%.
But it hardly matters as collections have dropped to levels that are far too low and now it will be a huge task for the film to get back to day one levels on Sunday.
The two day business of the film is under 5 crore nett and it the best case scenario looks a 10 crore nett four day weekend and that will not be easy considering the drop on day two and as some mass pockets did not drop much on Friday, the drop for them could come Saturday
The only little positive for the film is Bihar which is playing out as a 7.5% circuit when the norm post pandemic has been under 2%. Sooryavanshi has an all India ratio of around 3% for Bihar.. The two day collections of Satyameva Jayate are as follows.
Friday – 3,00,00,000 apprx
Saturday – 1,85,00,000 apprx

If Antim makes 12 times from here like Bell Bottoms did in extremely adverse scenario, in my books then it will be a hit.

Thats because very few are ready to assess the real impact of pandemic. Most dont find its needed as they are analysts and indirect stakeholder. However i am quite keen because even my business got impacted and am following the recovery and keen to know the real value vs non pandemic value.

You are trying to portray Bell Bottom as a HIT. If you stopped at staying it’s done relatively better than BNB2, Antim and SJ2 it’s acceptable (on just collections). But it’s not a HIT. That’s the difference.
If you said 30Cr was acceptable I doubt anyone bothers to debate but once you start claiming it’s successful, HIT, bla bla you just embarrass yourself.

Are we even comparing Diwali 2017 with circumstances right now? Sonakshi Sinha’s solos during thise times were doing better business than Antim ir SJ2 are right now? Can we even compare?
I hope this is a blip but, sadly, I can see a lot of films being complete wash-outs in the next few weeks while in 2019, we talked about it here, things were working at rate of practically 1 succesful film every week.

It is about Salman’s stardom. It is declining from Bharat and then Radhe. If Suryavanshi can open like a storm what prevents Antim to open atleast a quarter percentage of the former? Boi is giving lame excuses saying that it is not full Salman movie while every critic says that Salman got the best scenes and best punchlines and he even acted much better. Looks like Salman’s core fan base is disillusioned with him. Now only multiplex audience can come to his rescue.

I think in normal times a real Salman Khan starrer would still have opened well. That he has been declining is obvious. No debate in there.
But in no way would a typical Salman Khan starrer in normal times have opened at 4.5cr. There are 2 obvious factors here:
1. Antim has Salman in a cameo (like Aamir in SS and SRK in DZ).
2 More importantly, the current prevailing circumstances.
The opening, if you look at the circumstances (especially the latter) is not disastrous if one compares to SS and DZ. It would have done much better in normal times, that is a given.
My main apprehension is that a lot of forthcoming releases are going to underperform as things are not at all back like old times.

A film’s success depends on 3 things. A very good film, a big star and his fan base. In Salman’s case, his fanbase made even a film like Race 3 work to some extent. His fanbase has declined over time. While Akshay’s fanbase has increased and makes his film work irrespective of circumstances. Annatthe worked because of rajni’s loyal fanbase.
83 and RRR may face either big success or an average success. These 2 films will test the waters. Prithviraj has akshay and s o it can sail through because of his loyal fanbase in certain circuits.
Akshay is a much more interesting actor than Salman.

Undoubtedly Antim in 2020 Jan would have opened to double digits. 8 cr minimum, considering the genre.
Its evident now that market is still operating at 40% discount now.
The week before Sooryavanshi was 80% down with Maharashtra and several states shut and several others open at 50% with no shows after 9 pm.
Bell Bottoms would also have been at 8-9 cr non holiday thursday opening.
Satyamev Jayate at 8-9 cr thurs non holiday opening.
My hypothesis is not getting vindicated with hindi releases. Earlier when i compared with FF9 or Bond movie…once can argue against me.
But now , anyone thinking that Salman in an action genre can open only at 4.5 cr is living in denial.

Nothing is permanent. There is nothing like permanent stardom. What goes up will come down one day or the other.
When we attribute the success of a film to a star, then the burden of failure must also be borne by that star.
Ironic that when mass stars start good acting, their core fan base do not appreciate much. They dont want to see a manoj bajpayee in a salman khan. They want Salman’s swag and style and larger than life presence in his films.

Antim – The Final Truth has the second highest first day of the year as the market comes back slowly. The top ten does see many films with low collections due to the pandemic but this should change by the end of the year.
Antim – The Final truth got a boost with Nizam / Andhra as it collected 55 lakhs nett in the circuit adding to the solid collections in Mumbai and CP Berar taking the all India collections to a fair 4.75 crore nett. Nizam / Andhra is a 12% circuit for the film which is much higher than normal and is actually a very good number. The top ten opening days of 2021 are as follows.

Take it or leave it, Akki is THE king right now. Although I hated SOORYAVANSHI to my core, one can see the yawning gap between him and other stars. It just cannot be that folks ventured and abandoned their fears for Sooryavanshi and suddenly got fear-struck when it came to Antim thinking it would be their Antim Samskar.

Question is where does the base settle down and for how long can you keep at your base and how often you get good roles.
In a good movie like Antim, Salman’s base has come down significantly. Blame it on producers for making Antim look like a small film at the beginning. But hey, producer is Salman himself. So why did he chose to make his full length role look like a cameo in the promos.
The new base hopefully is temporary. His next is after an year. He should have had a comeback sooner.

Antim – The Final Truth will show an upward trend on Saturday as it does business in the 5.25-5.50 crore nett range. The jump is not huge but it was crucial that the film did not drop. These type of films tend to be flat or drop on day two and here was the added factor of Salman Khan brining in the opening day audience so a drop would have been no surprise.
The film has actually held on day two which means now the actual film has a chance as its about the film and not the star pull. Now that the film did not drop on Saturday it can aim for a good Sunday and decent first weekend collections.
The metros have shown healthy gains and even Delhi city where Mumbai underworld films have little appeal. Some of the bigger cities of Punjab are also up where these films hold even less appeal than Delhi city.
There will be falls in places like Nizam / Andhra where Antim – The Final Truth was very good on day one and places like CP Berar and Bihar wher it also collected well but a mass market like Gujarat is showing gains which is a good sign . Maharashtra should also be up where the film had solid first day collections.

See it all depends on Distributor’s cost and OTT price that Antim gets.
Bell Bottoms was sold on commission. Producers took it on their chin with a hope to test the waters. What came out was shocking due to pandemic. Good thing was, exhibitors did not lose and distributors also did not lose. Bell bottoms got 60% distributor share from week 1, so distributors and producers got average theatrical returns. But still producers got good deal from OTT to make Bell Bottoms a clean HIT.
Antim however is not sold on commission. There is a very high (looking high now) fixed distributor cost. Also OTT would determine if producers also loses money or get profits.

Antim till the last week was not projected as a Salman movie. On some TV show last week, Salman point blank claimed it’s his movie. I’m sure munna will know the clip.
Every review I’ve seen he’s in the movie for 1 hour. He’s in the poster.
The difference is there is no leading lady, no EID release, no silly selfie song, the usual bhai getup is not there.
Is SS getup the usual Aamir getup? Is DZ the usual SRK getup. Those were films working on WOM. Not some front loaded opening.
Antim opening is poor. So is SJ2.
All these medium/small films may struggle till overall confidence is there. Just like BELL BOTTOM.

Below 20 cr weekend for a film with Salman in parallel lead (1 hr screen time) is extremely poor and nowhere near to Hit business. One can put a case that it shud be doing 17-18 cr on a daily basis itself given the Salman factor. Anyways, it has to trend very well to get to hit business, which i dont see happening.

As I said, before, the comparison for Antim should be films like SS and DZ where the big star eas not the main lead, but had a pivotal part. We cannot compare it with Tiger or Bharat because everyone knows it very much is an Aayush vehicle primarily.
We also need to take the current context into account. So, both DZ and SS made around 60-62cr in normal times. Time will tell how much Antim does but the current context cannot be ignored.
The genre is front loaded kind here but the trending is decent enough to hope that it can sustain.
Either way, I think it will take some time before things get back like in 2019 where even ‘smaller’ films like Lukka Chuppi were threatening the 100cr net mark.
However,, SJ2 and B&B2 are washouts. No doubt about that at all.
I guess that 83 and Jersey will test the waters once again this year. If they under-perform, then I fear a lot for the releases of early next year.

Rahul, you need to stop your silly comparison of Antim with SS and DZ. Aamir had a 20 min cameo in SS while DZ had SRK for 30-40 mins. Here Salman is not playing such a cameo and is a parallel lead with 1 hour of screen time.
Next factor is the genre. Antim is masala action genre which is BO friendly. SS was a social drama while DZ was a coming of age story of a girl but had a romantic angle involving SRK. DZ had Aliya as the lead and with SRK’s cameo it shud have ideally done a lot more than SS, where Zaira was the lead.
Anyways, in the end SS and DZ did 63 and 68 cr respectively and were small hits. Antim due to its genre and Salman’s parallel role shud be doing a lot more than these films. Sooryavanshi has shown tat the audience is willing to go to theaters if something decent is being offered. So considering everything, Antim opening in the range of SS is a poor opening without any doubt and the trending is also nothing good with Sat being just 5 cr while Fri was 4 cr.
Sun may be 6-7 cr for a 17-18 cr weekend total. But as I said it shud be doing that amount on opening day itself given Salman’s 1 hr presence and the action genre. Its a colossal disappointment everything considered. No one is expecting it to open like Tiger 3 (40-50 cr day one), but 4 cr opening for Antim is good? LOL

Marcus, so according to you counting minutes is the key and if you pit Antim as a similar vehicle as Tiger, then I can’t do anything about it.
At the end of the day, it was Salman in a pivotal role and not the main lead, everybody is aware of that. Do you honestly think that a Salman Khan film starts at 4.5cr even if he is in decline? The Tiger 3 figures will probably tell you how far from the truth it is.
As for genre, action masala probably ensures a better initial but content driven films trend better and do better at high end muliplexes. So, if action films were always destined to do better, as per your claim, then I am confused why producers are that stupid to not invest in them more and why there are more content films from Bollywood while there are so few action movies. How come those Ayushman Khurana movies are doing better and how come the likes of Sunny Deol have disappeared?
And by your projections back then, SS was going to smash Golmaal 4, irrespective of he genres!
It’s the other way round. Action movies can open well but have to be appreciated all around as single screens collections tend to drop quickly and considerably after the initial.
In Antim’s case, it has not. So, while it has not performed wonders, there is some hope.
At the end of the day, it is not the genre, but the quality and acceptance of the audience that define the final collections.
I think both SS and DZ did reasonably well. Antim faces a tall to emulate them, especially with the pandemic. But if you look at trade’s prediction (even BOI) and even most people here, it was to be beaten initially by SJ2. Do you honestly think it was a Salman Khan vehicle, as you claim, it would be projected to be beaten initially by a JA film?

The fact is that Antim has opened way below what DZ/SS opened to. DZ day one was 8.75 cr. SS first friday was 9.25 cr. That was on diwali holiday but SS also did 8.5 cr on first Saturday and Sunday each. And this was against GA running to full houses.
Whereas Antim has done only 4.75 cr against a washout SJ2 on Friday and 5.5 cr on Saturday.
Its silly to expect Antim to do only as much as SS/DZ due to genre differences and length of superstar roles. But its even more idiotic to say Antim has opened like SS/DZ.

Opening depends as much as on genre as superstars presence, while trending depends on acceptance. Antim isnt masala action according to you??? This film is same as SS as per BO potential because you claim the superstar is not in pivotal role? And i never claimed SS will thrash GA. My expectations from SS was 💯 cr blocbuster but it turned out to be a 63 cr hit only. Just like i have said LSC can do 300-400 cr if it turns out to be as good as the original material. If it turns out to be an average film and does 100-200 cr, my expectations will not be at fault, just that the film wud disappoint.

If the market was that affected then Sooryavanshi wudnt be doing 200 cr now. As i said Antim was an easy 100 cr on paper prepandemic. Now it needs 75-80 cr to be declared a Hit. Winning an argument? What is there to win or lose? We are merely providing our own takes or opinions, even if we may be disagreeing with each other’s point of view.
1. I have said it repeatedly that action movies may open better but also tend to fizzle out quicker than content based movies.
2. If I do not know the difference between a 1 hour role and a cameo, then maybe you do not know the difference between a 1 hour role to a star vehicle.
3. Worse, you do not even seem to know the difference between Diwali 2017 and circumstances right now. Right now, we do not know to what extent or on what level things are operating at. Only time will tell. But who knows, may be a 4.5cr would translate into a 8cr opening in previous times. Maybe less, maybe more. At the times of BB, some people here were talking about figures like 30%, at the time of Sooryavanshi, others started talking about 70% of real business in previous times. I don’t know the methodology used. They most probably were wild claims. What is obvious, with hindsight, is that Sooryavanshi has performed a miracle and the rest looks less rosy. 4. As SS and DZ, they did what I expected. Check it out, a week before release of SS, there were claims here that it will trounce G4. Even you claimed it will beat G4. When it did 62cr, I felt it did well, but some were disappointed that it was beaten by G4. Check those posts. I claimed it has done well and those previous expectations were unfair towards the film. Check it out. All is right here on this forum.
My final word ( at the risk of repeating mysellf): The bottom line is that I think the current business is still to a considerable extent affected by the pandemic. We don’t know to what extent. But we can’t ignore that factor. The pandemic may turn huge stars into nothingness as long as it is here. And it makes a big difference between a star vehicle and a film that is not one. There are unfortunately going to be a considerable amount of commercial failures coming up.

On the risk of repeating myself, let me state why your points fall flat on its face:
1. If action movies tend to open better than content films, then how is Antim’s opening (which even you have admitted is lower than SS?DZ) even okay?
2. If i dont know the difference between a star vehicle and whats not, then why wud i be saying Tiger 3 is expected to open at 40-50 cr while Antim at 17-18 cr?
You on the other hand, expect Antim to open like SS/DZ despite claiming to know the difference between a cameo and parallel role?
3. In Diwali 2017, GA did 200 cr. Sooryavanshi is doing as much now! You seem utterly confused about the market scenario right now and claiming Sooryavanshi is a miracle and what not. 83 opening will show the market potential once again. Poor films in between will bite the dust. No surprises there.
4. As I said my SS expectations were 100 cr+. I am least interested in stuff like GA. But yes GA overperformed and SS underperformed as per my expectations. That is primarily because SS turned out to be an average to good film instead of a masterpiece that i expected. Something like Raazi did 100+ cr a few months later. So SS cud also have done 100+ cr if it was really good to a brilliant film.
Bottom-line is that current business is no longer affected by pandemic to the extent you are claiming to be. With the rise of OTT it was always evident that small to medium budget films will suffer theatrically with changing viewing habits. Star vehicles will do regular business or slightly less.

Let us drop SS and DZ reference and take Antim as a standalone.
The plus with antim is that Salman is getting praise for his restrained performance and saving the film from going SJ2 way. It is a good effort and we got some actors out of it. It is not due to pandemic but audience suddenly turned choosy after Suryavanshi.
JA should also stop doing ricdiculous stuff trying to prove himself as the ultimate deshbhakt. What is the connection between corruption and deshbhakti unless somebody sells the country for monetary benefits. Those 2 things should be treated individually like Shershah and viigilane films.
The audience rejected a well made Chehre when it appeared in theatres.
An unpredictable audience dont give hopes for the revival of bollywood in a big way.

This is where maturity comes in. the main thing is there’s truly no real bar right now until you start getting apple to apple comparison, till than you can make bellbottom as a sholay of current times.
There’s a saying in USA lottery commercial, “You can’t win, if you don’t play”. this is where akshay is benefitting, he has a relase every few weeks so some will sink like bellbottom (which for you is sholay of current time) and some will be hit like sooryavanshi. no one else has big release or any release so there’s really nothing to compare.
We’ll have to wait until big films like RRR, pathan, tiger, lsc, hrithik, etc releases and then we’ll see but at that time you can get back to comparing grand total of akshay 8 films in a year to 1 film like LSC. :-
But you have to give credit where it’s due, akshay is playing and he had finished films waiting to release.

Clearly Pandemic effect is number 1 reason for poor collections.

Else, knowing Salman Khan’s box office pull despite his recent decline (remember he is still in Top 3 and maintains healthy branding via Big Boss/Frequent releases) would still get a 10 cr opening on a non holiday for a genre which is his forte.

I already told earlier Antim has a chance and that if like Bell Bottoms, Antim does same multiple of its opening (BB did around 13-14 times), then it will be a HIT if it gets same OTT as what BB got.
So Antim’s target is 50 cr to match BB’s trending. If it does, i will call it Hit. Some may call it average which i think will be fair. I am consistent with my ratings.
It has been sold to Zee at a moderate price. So it’s OTT is not as much as what Amazon paid BB. Zee will benefit because it now has a Salman’s movie in a parallel lead at half the price because SKP sold it as Salan’s cameo.

I won’t be surprised if this were true. Post pandemic, economics have changed. i am keeping track and this is definitely possible.
I always thought Antim is a small release. I think momentum towards Antim got built in the last week when Salman went all out to promote it on twitter etc. They pitched it as Salman’s movie and at par with Satyamev Jayate 2 which was a bigger film before. Overall SKP really played it in a confused way. The moment you make a release with 2500 screen, you are on with biggie. Ideally Antim should have been with 1500 screens as per what it was originally perceived.

AkshayKumar’s Bell Bottom was released when theatres were not revived. It was released in 800 screens only without Maharashtra. Still it opened with 2.78cr and lifetime was 34cr. Undoubtedly, Bell Bottom was a HIT.

Antim needs to stay around 3Cr through weekdays and it will have a 30Cr first week. Then can it stay steady. I wouldn’t rule it out. A 50Cr finish will be good after the poor start. I don’t know the economics here. Budget seems to be 45Cr according to one site. It says average at 45Cr and hit at 60Cr. Those outcomes are in reach. But if achieved it will be based on poor opening/good run scenario. Still excellent if done. Better that way cos at least WOM suggests decent movie.

I was talking about the best case scenario for Antim (75-80 cr) based on current market potential. With the low opening it obviously wont reach there.
It still has to trend well to reach even 60 cr. But not sure if we can call it a ‘Hit’ at SS level of lifetime collections. No doubt its made with a controlled budget, but doubt if its budget is as low as SS’s 15 cr.

I always expect the best case scenario for films i think may turn out to be good, be it SS, Antim or even Jersey. My predictions are usually on the higher side for these films (or lower side for stuff i am not interested it – like Shetty films).
But you are right that the market is too volatile now to predict stuff accurately. I hv learnt my lesson by predicting 75 cr total for Sooryavanshi based on BB’s performance and then 75 cr for Antim based on Sooryavanshi’s BO. So no more ‘predictions/expectations’ from my side.
Still think LSC can do 300-400 cr when it comes 4.5 months from now based on the ‘expectation’ that it will be as good a film as the original film. But no more confidence in that, and will watch it as it comes.

TOH expectations were based on coming together of Aamir and Amitabh under YRF banner with D3 director. The combination looked great on paper but Aamir’s bipolar lead character did not go down well with the masala audience.
The trailer and song promos of TOH were frankly not great. Specially the trailer was criticized a lot for shabby vfx work.
Dangal trailer was good but did not look like an upcoming ATG.
Anyways, dont think LSC trailer is coming anytime soon.

If a film works for you, then the rest should not matter as much. It may not turn out to be the hugest grosser ever, but if it does enough to engage you and being memorable for you positively forever, then it is enough. The BO records are the bonus there.
I absolutely loved Khakee. It probably remains the best Hindi cop film for me, personally. That it under-performed at the BO is a disappointment, but it does not make it a lesser film at all for me. It probably was ahead of its time, or maybe people did not understand it, or the genre was not liked.. I don’t know. But for me, it is one of those rare films where practically every single scene (except for a song that had no place in there) was well done, the performances of everyone were top notch, the characters arc, the editing, cinematography, dialogues and BG score were near perfect. Rajkumar Santoshi put his heart into it and it was hard hitting.
Chasing records and huge huge collections often comes the expense of quality.
I have high hopes on RRR, LSC and Prithviraj (more because of Dwivedi and Akshay Kumar and despite YRJ). I hope they turn out to be good films. RRR does not need to beat Bahubali’s record for me. It needs to create the same emotional and dramatic impact. That will be more than enough for me.

I’m sure Khakee won that Akshay Kumar world cup. Just shows you can keep getting hits but the best films will eventually outlast everything else.
For Salman for every Bodyguard type opening, Bajrangi Bhaijaan is by a distance his best movie in past 2 decades.

Personal appreciation is something v personal and different from the BO game. I liked ToH quite a bit, but the universal panning of the movie left a bad taste in mouth. Also for a film to be a winner in the long term a lot of people need to like it even if they did not watch it in theaters. Lot of people loves Khakee. Rahul is just one among them. Acceptance at some common level is needed for shelf life of a film. Thats where BO is important in most cases for good films, it shows enuf people spent their hard earned money on viewing it theatrically.

I think even for an actor there may be a certain film in which he puts his heart into it and it does not work for the audience. That film may remain like his own, misunderstood but favourite child.
A friend of mine met Sunny Deol in London at around the time of Apne. He met him as a fan. In what was supposed to be a brief encounter, Deol casually asked him about his favourite film. My friend told him, it was JP Dutta’s Yateem. Sunny Deol was surprised. Yhis drawed his attention. I guess he would have expected names like Ghayal, Ghatak, Border, Gadar or other big hits of his. He asked my friend to sit down and he asked “Why Yateem?”. And they both spoke about Yateem for some time and even became quite familiar after that and they still are.
So, for a actor, there probably is a film he rates, others have not and it remains his personal favourite. Millions of others may rate something else of his, but these won’t matter as much.

Even I liked Khakee quite a lot, but both its Box office and its imdb rating left me quite surprised. I’m still not sure why this film didn’t do even as much as Ghatak, or why it doesn’t have much cultural resonance.
Although I must say it’s a bit too dialogue-heavy, and the film itself maybe lacks a touch of lightness?

With the Omicron variant spreading around the globe, I think it’s time to say bye-bye to the Box Office in the near future. Films will have to be postponed once again. It will be suicidal for big films to open at the end of December.
In other news, No Time To Die has crossed 758 million worldwide and is looking to end its run at around 775 million. It has comfortably beaten F9 despite the latter ratcheting up 200 million in China.
It’s a great achievement because after a long time a non-Marvel film has taken the top slot at the worldwide Box Office (Chinese films excluded). It’s probably not the best film for Daniel Craig to bow out but that didn’t deter Bond fans across the globe. It has now broken Spectre’s record in the UK, without adjusting for inflation. With inflation, it’s behind Spectre.
It has also been running at #1 on the PVOD platforms in the US for the past 2 weeks, where one can rent it out for $20. That potentially will take its US total above $200 million at least. Not bad for a film that got delayed twice since the beginning of the pandemic.

Deaths are mostly a by-product of Health facilities being overwhelmed. If the Omicron variant evades vaccines it could result in more hospitalizations, leading to more deaths in the long run. That’s the biggest concern.

I know of some cases (in India) where people have been in hospital for more than 2 weeks but died. The body didn’t respond to the treatments. In India, many of the deaths probably could be attributed to lack of facilities in April-May time frame. But in US after last year onslaught at start of pandemic, things are okay in terms of percentage available beds in ICU but thee are still deaths.
Based on articles Omicron symptoms are mild; hopefully it is like lambda variant which has not created havoc like delta.

I checked BOI for SRK, Ram Jaane is a hit? MNIK, Ra.One are definitely not hits, nor is HNY a superhit. But Dear Zindagi is definitely a hit, and some of the budgets are too high,.
I think BOI is definitely against small films, remember Anubhav Sinha having a spat with them over Thappad, which was on its way to breakeven with its trend till the lockdown started.

Bell Bottom release scenario –
800 screen release with no Maha, Guj, Mp, and several other states open and other states at 50% and night curfew.
My calculation of 20% market at the Bell Bottoms makes Bell Bottoms get a multiple of 5. So 32×5 = 160 cr nett.
Problem is no credible trade analysts has done this. Of course these are argumentative but doesnt mean that pandemic correction is not done to compare apples with apples.
Now one can say market was 15% or 50% but there is jo way one can get away giving a verdic for Bell Bottoms without doing this analysis.
I then used this to correcly get the numbers for all other releases done during the time.
When Maharashtra 50%, Gujarat 100%, MP 100%, Bihar 50 to 100% , Delhi 50 – 100% opened, etc the market was still at discount.
This is when Sooryavanshi released. For me market was still at 40% discount / lower.
Very soon Maharashtra and all other states will become 100% open. But still this year i would say market would become 80-85%.
Probably if things remain free or rumours of fear of pandemic…then itnwould become 100% but i doubt its going to happen soon.

You’re going against Akshay himself, who said the market was at 27% capacity and that he expected a 5 Cr opening for Bell Bottom.

Maha/Guj were bigger because Sooryavanshi or Antim were more rooted films in that ethos. Tanhaji made almost 50% of its gross from MH, because it was a tale specific to that state. Films like Airlift, Baby or Bell Bottom had no such special factor.

Sooryavanshi collected a decent 55-60 lakhs on its fourth Monday to take its fourth week total in four days to 4.75 crore nett. The film is looking at a fourth week total of 6.25 crore nett which will give Sooryavanshi a four week total of 191 crore nett. Thereafter there will not be much coming and maybe it can add another 5 crore nett for a final total of 196 crore nett,
Antim – The Final Truth has held very well on Monday showing a drop of around 36% from Friday with collections of 3 crore nett. The trend is very good for Monday especially for an action film. The holds were very good in all mass pockets especially Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Would have been nicer to see Sooryavanshi cross 200 cr. But the real speed breaker came in the shape of 2 releases which took away the shows.
Antim is now looking set to do 40 cr nett and more depending on competition every friday from here on. However Tadap and Chandigarh are WoM movies and wont impact shows of Antim to a large extent.

I agree with the savvy businessman tag on SRK; I’m quite certain that he will be the first billionaire Indian movie star if he gets the right comeback. He started Dreamz with Juhi, that failed and they both end up buying KKR for $75 million, which must have been big money then but I’m sure every movie star now wishes they took part in the IPL auction, given how they’ve been going after football, badminton and kabbadi teams, neither of which have done as well as the IPL, with football being a total flop. He also buys KKR in 2007 at the peak of his career and then hits a slump.
But SRK’s lucky in a perverse way that Aryan Khan went through what he did. Although Saket would disagree wrongly, it’s a perfect encapsulation of the Modi Govt’s behaviour and transforms him into an icon of a romanticized older India, unlike Akshay Kumar, about whom it will be said that it must be hard to practice marital arts without a spine.

@Saket: Aamir Khan famously sat with the Narmada Andolan and even signed a letter against Modi’s visa IIRC. I’m sure there are a lot of pressures more significant for big stars that make do these photo ops but there’s a difference between this and Akshay Kumar doing tweets dictated by the powers that be.

If you can crack jokes on stars not having a spine, you should also point out how the “icon of romanticized older India” is taking selfies with his nemesis de jure. And that too like a Modi fanboy.
If principles can be sacrificed at the altar of pragmatism, then you shouldn’t be casting stones at others. Glass houses and all.
It doesn’t matter to me one bit because unlike you, I never held any Bollywood star to some lofty standard of propriety. And, of course, I don’t worship any star. I’d rather have better role models than Bollywood stars — at least not the ones who sell their soul at the drop of a hat.
I have not been proven wrong in the SSR case, yet. The last update from the CBI was that a “murder” hasn’t been ruled out. So the onus is on you to prove otherwise. Having said that, I’ve moved on from this a long time ago.

How can you be sure? Is there any empirical evidence? All I hear is assertions, unfortunately.
And in case anyone missed my arguments, I’ve only spoken against the use of drugs. For which there is proof that Aryan Khan indulged in the use of drugs. The law itself is impartial — archaic as it maybe — but the same law was used to put Arman Kohli behind bars and as far as I’m aware, he’s still not out on bail.
As for the High Court judgment, I wanted to post this earlier — the same judiciary also dropped all cases against Amit Shah and Narendra Modi. So perhaps you could hail those judgments as well.
And the same High Court thinks Salman Khan was a passenger in a car when pavement dwellers were butchered.

@Aman the comments were not at all directed to you. Your responses are extremely measured and reasonable whether I agree with them or not; and vice-versa. I am just surprised by this back-lash where I merely mentioned that SRK isn’t dumb!! It is there for all to see. His investments; his controversies, they are everywhere to see for everyone! And there’s nothing absolutely wrong in that! He is a ’90s product and he SHOULD be monetarily opportunistic and grab them.
But then the reply was the same stale stuff; Canada, Mango, Modi, Amar Singh…

No, I bring it up when there is the need to realize that world is not fair for everyone and when especially mention business part of it. Imagine Aamir just saying is it okay to move out of country for kid’s growing and education(which is not at all that surprising 5 years later as many well to do families are moving out), there’s a huge cry. If someone is moving out to US, UK and settle down there it is PERFECTLY fine with me and everyone. But is NOT FINE to take another country’s citizenship for just business deals and then he keeps getting the free passes. That is the blatant partisan I’m pointing out. Even you know that Khans will never get that free pass neither by you or anyone. Just imagine SRK or Aamir taking up Canadian citizenship now and let’s see how many folks in India support them. Salman really should have started promoting this a month ago as his film and it would have done a very good business at high level since this is truly one of his better film that is not completely trashed by critics.

The film has been marketed as a Salman Khan film. Make no mistake about it — and the film’s abysmal opening is a direct reflection of Salman’s current standing. Harsh as it may be for Salman fans, the ones that have decided to still stick around after a decade of miserable films and even worse acting. Which is astounding and mind-numbing at the same time (for people to still care about Salman).

Bollywood directors might as well start copy pasting a few of the MI/Bond/Bourne films for spy-espionage stories since this genre has been almost laughable in Hindi cinema thus far (War being the only somewhat passable commercial espionage film as Baby and D Day aren’t exactly entirely commercially appealing).

It is good to be Akshay fan. If Antim had done 200 crores, you would have compared with Sooryavanshi. If it does 40 crores, you compare with Bell Bottom. If it had done 100 crores, you would compare with Gold and still support Akshay. Like there’s a movie for every range and every topic! 🙂

I don’t think Akshay is much of an actor (amazing at comedy though) but still need to give credit where it’s due – the fact he is able to pull of 150-200 crore grossers often enough after throwing out so many films is kind of amazing. No one in the world is doing that with this type of volume.

Antim – The Final Truth had its first drop in collections on Wednesday as the numbers went down 20% plus for the film to collect in the 2-2.25 crore nett. There were general drops in business as Sooryavanshi also fell around 15%.
Despite the drop the weekday business is pretty healthy as even on Wednesday the collections are only 55% down on day one but the film cannot afford a drop like Wednesday on Thursday as then the film will be going into the second week at far lower levels.
