    Trivia question, which I actually answered in a quiz long back: SUNIL VALSON is only player from World cup team who never got to play for India. He was supposed to debut in the world cup but never got the match and after world cup, they forgot about him and never picked him again. Lol.

    Reliance Entertainment and Phantom Films present 83, a Kabir Khan Films Production. A Reliance Entertainment and PVR Pictures release. 83 is releasing in cinemas in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Also in 3D.

    Kamal Haasan’s Raajkamal Films International and Akkineni Nagarjuna’s Annapurna Studios join hands with Reliance Entertainment to present the Tamil and Telugu versions respectively of the film. Prithviraj’s production and Kichcha Sudeepa’s Shalini Arts are set to present the film in Malayalam and Kannada versions.

    The film is jointly produced by Deepika Padukone, Kabir Khan, Vishnu Vardhan Induri, Sajid Nadiadwala, Phantom Films, Reliance Entertainment.

    Brilliant trailer. Looks like fun. Its Kapil’s story here mostly. Wasnt Gavaskar a part of 83 team, or did miss him?
    Cons-
    Compared to MS Dhoni, this is a bit less effective for me.
    Also Ranveer has been made to have his teeth out to look like Kapil but its a bit odd.

    Fantastic trailor. Blockbuster. Not sure if this resonates with the young crowd though. For people in the 35 to 50 age category this is amazing nostalgia

      I think it would. If it had been any other sports like Hockey(Gold) etc it wouldnt have as current generation of hockey is not connected with youth. Hence Gold couldnt click.

    Very good trailer. It can do very well and only the current context, and Jersey, coming after a week may affect it a bit. But, fingers crossed, this (and Jersey as well) may end up doing very well.

    There are some very good moments in the trailer and bar some stereotypical, not-so-subtle patriotic rhetoric (I guess it has become an essential element for films to work these days), I think there is a potential winner in here.

    Pretty good trailer. Ranveer has nailed Kapil’s mannerisms perfectly. Every.single.detail.

    Kabir Khan isn’t a great director though, and I don’t think the film’s got anything on Dangal but man, Ranveer looks like he has killed it again.

    Very flat and disappointing trailer. Not a single scene shown here that captures the eccentricity and sheer craziness that went along. Loved only that one scene where Kapil is mid-shower and 4 wickets are down against Zimbabwe.

    Ranbir surely captures Kapil’s cricketing stance and hitting style nicely; however, not quite happy with his dialogue delivery – looks caricaturish to me.

    Hopefully the movie is better and I am proven wrong.

      I think the dialogue delivery is spot-on. This is how Kapil speaks and the voice in the press conference kind of stunned me as to how close to Kapil’s voice it resembled.

        But thats called mimicry. If we look at great actings in biopic, instead of mimicry whats needed is to get the soul of the character.

        Which are the top 3 biopics in India which has really made us feel it.

        1. MS Dhoni

        2. Bhaag Milka Bhaag

        3. Rustom

        In all these none did mimicry. But they became the character they played.

          Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is a film I liked quite a lot. M S Dhoni as well but neither Farhan nor SSR are/were great actors.

          They were slightly more than earnest at best.

          Saket, Lack of knowledge in technicalities should be overcome when now you have started your podcast.

          Both SSR and Farhaan , usually not great actors but gave their pect performance in the biopic. In these films, they outdid themselves. Maybe biopics inspire people to do, and good directors does help with their vision of what they want and how they want to show great names.

          Again usually not so good actors do really brilliant act in certain movies. Its art. Try to not use engineering every where.

          I’m not going to be dishonest in my opinion. I can’t have a separate yardstick for acting, one for Bollywood and one for the rest of the world.

          It simply doesn’t work that way. I liked both BMB and MSD but I could see that the lead actors were good, not great. I’m in fact very particular about this — the pitch of the dialogue delivery, the intonation, the inflection, they all play a key role for me in determining if an actor has delivered a terrific performance.

          I have seen what the greatest actors in the world are capable of — British actors, in particular — and I see no reason to reward and appreciate mediocrity.

          A recent example is Sidharth Malhotra in Shershaah. The whole world seemed to go ga-ga over it but it’s not a great performance by any means. He was charming in the film and it was good that he didn’t have too many emotional scenes to portray, which would have shown his limitations to one and all, and that’s about it. He did surprise me because I didn’t even expect this much out of him, but a great performance, it’s definitely not.

          Here’s a newsflash for you — it’s not called mimicry, that’s what comic artists do, often to exaggerated effect. Think Ramgarh Ke Sholay and films like that.

          In a serious film, an actor playing a historical figure has to imbibe the character’s distinctive traits — and that’s called acting. Proper acting.

          Something that Askhay Kumar isn’t capable of and hasn’t been despite being in the industry for 30+ years.

          Watch Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour for instance. Or Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln

          More recently, Rami Malek killed it as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.

          These are not examples of mimicry because they did heavy research to play their parts. That’s what is expected out of a good/great actor.

          You are free to assume the intentions behind my examples.

          For what it’s worth, these films (and performances) represent the benchmark for me when it comes to great historical portrayals. Hindi cinema has only recently started the trend of biopics.

          Amongst Hindi films, I think Mohanlal was phenomenal in Iruvar and Sachin Khedekar was pretty good as Bose, although the latter film was a disappointment.

    I think a great biopic idea would be Bachchan saab playing Frontier Gandhi. It should be done by Ridley Scott, though.

      I dont know but always feel stars are not best suited for biopics. Again Bachchan is rare …but i always think his image can become bigger than the role esp in biopic kind of setup.
      I had similar problem with Sardaar, though Paresh did a brilliant act and the movie itself was phenomenal. But you do carry an image. May be 1% but you do.

      If you consider yourself a true Akshay Kumar fan, please tone down the fervour a little. Some of the things you say will only make people hate Akshay Kumar — the opposite of what you intend to achieve.

        See most of these are fan wars. Done in retaliation to what someone said earlier etc. A hyperbole requires a hyperbole. So in those kind of arguments i use similar words. Kind of one upmanship. Its like Ranveer Singh doing a comedy and next scene a serious role.

        So like him, i like to switch gears. Talk about real cinema, acting ,direction, etc. Here my love for cinema takes over.

    I can overlook certain poetic liberties taken if the overall film is good. This is not a biopic of one person but 11 or more players and coach. It is impossible for everyone to be convincing to everyone, especially to the generations which knows them very well.
    I hope that they did their best and are going to give us a glorious moment of history on celluloid.
    Among the present day actors, Ranveer is special as a star actor and he proved himself with his filmi outings.
    Many films deceive us by giving very good trailers but the films dont live upto the expectations.
    Here we know the story and what to expect. No suspense. Only interested to know how good it is.
    World premiere is on 15th December and we will come to know how it is received there.
    All the best from my side to 83. Kapil Dev and his team will get a second chance to prove the magic once again on celluloid through other actors portraying them faithfully as far as possible.

      I don’t think Kabir Khan is a great director. In the hands of someone like Rakeysh Mehra this would have been truly epic.

      But it does tick most of the boxes for me. Kabir Khan seems to be retelling the funny and important bits of the 83 campaign, which is fine. The only sore point (for me) was that the West Indian cricketers seem to be portrayed by really bad actors. The trailer itself could have been cut better, but overall, I think it’s definitely good enough to induce nostalgia in people who remember the events of 83.

      i liked the importance given to India vs Zim match which noone has seen but was the turning point. So does have novelty.
      Star cast is good. Cannot ignore the presence of Deepika who is looking stunning and elevates the scenes die to her screen presence.

      But i do agree Sanjana that now novelty is gone. MSD was first on cricket, CDI was first on Hockey, Dangal was first on Wrestling, BMB was first on athletics, so all were amazing.

      Gold came but novelty was gone, though the movie was not bad. Reema Kagati’s vision of Akshay as a passionate bengali coach was a wrong choice as what came out was caricaturish. You need a solid convincing serious lead. No comedy. Dead serious like the role of Kabir Khan in CDI. However gold still had moments but overall the movie was average.

      The worry is 83 might be Gold ….but if not and if Kabir Khan has kept the Kapil’s role as dead serious…not caricaturish …it would work. It needs convincing. Problem is Kapil Dev himself was a doer and not a talker. In the movie, Ranveer is talking, a lot.

    Not much to add, everyone has added good comments via their views.

    I looked at the trailer from two views, 1) Retelling of the real story 2) The film on it’s own.
    Often people get carried away too much with bullet #1 and don’t enjoy the film. In this case, watch the film with bullet #2 in mind and you’ll enjoy it a lot.

    Take Sanju for example, I could not get myself to watch that film as #1 because i would have found so many loopholes that i would not have enjoyed the film at all.

    At the end of the day, these are films made to entertain for most part and you have to take it with grain of salt.

    I enjoyed the trailer and the production value is topnotch.

    Fantastic comments and discussion from everyone. As I said, my take is only based on this trailer. To me, it didn’t look like a ‘magnificent’ David versus Goliath arc. The cheeky Srikanth’s nose-twirling and ‘chumma’ dialogues; Bedi’s ‘See you tomorrow’ – I don’t know whether it is cinematic liberty or is it make-believe to get whistles, I don’t know. If it is done as a cinematic liberty to add spice, then that scene is pathetic. And I was disappointed with the color; [Why couldn’t KK go with black and white and if not, some grainy visuals that transform to color?] Now in 1975, I am not sure whether there was color TV in India. I remember, with great, great difficulty, and with loans galore, my Dad managed to buy a ‘Dyanora’ color TV just for the ’84 Los Angeles olympics.

    My point is, these are the ‘cultural’ nuances and significant social-moves that need to be captured. I hope they have done that in the film.

    Yes, Kapil was very, very conscious when he spoke English; hence always a ‘therav’ because there was always a pressure at the back of his mind whether he is delivering the correct ‘pronunciation’ that the oh-so-propah English like.

    Again, I am positive about this film: This is just a trailer – maybe there are many gems hidden underneath.

    As far as KK conquers, and lets the world know the think-tanks, the think-tactics that went on in the dressing rooms; the actual field; I would love it. You see, no surface laptops with Dravid or any other coach sitting and drowning in ‘statistics’ the American way with ‘impact’ players and all that crap, but that one goes by instinct, the animal-hunt on the ground, I would love this film…

    Good solid trailer. I’ve always maintained Ranveer is perhaps the first mainstream box office crowd puller since Amitabh Bachchan whose not just gotten star value but genuinely decent acting chops as well (beyond the swag and slow motion walks or caricature dialogue deliveries of the rest of them). Bajirao, Padmaavat, Gully Boy and now 83 only prove this fact. Kapil is India’s greatest cricketer yet (ahead of Gavaskar and Sachin in my books) and no one better to portray him than Ranveer.

      I’m not a huge fan of Padmaavat, the film. It has its moments — some of the battle scenes are brilliantly shot, SLB’s visuals are eye-catching as usual, but the film itself is a drag. And it seemed like a rushed product as well.

      That said, I think Ranveer was the best thing about it, even though I wouldn’t call it one of his best performances.

      One of his most underrated performances was in Dil Dhadakne Do, a film that’s quite enjoyable as well. It’s the anti-K3G film with a terrific performance from Shefali Shah. Anil Kapoor was also quite good in that film.

        Both K3G and DDD are terrible films in my books. Agreed on Padmaavat. Great performance as an antagonist in an otherwise bland movie, ditto for Bajirao Mastani. His act in Band Baaja and Lootera are noteworthy as well.
