Hollywood penetrating India is least of it’s worry. I’d be more worried if Bollywood was producing good quality and it was being outdone by Hollywood. It isn’t. Covid has hurt the smaller movies but got little sympathy for likes of Antim.

It puts Bollywood into perspective. As sad as that maybe but it’s reality.

  5. Bollywood must wake up and smell the coffee. 90% of films from Bollywood are for a small segment of the audience. Most of them are small content driven films. These are not going to work anymore for some time.

Cinema in the 80s and 90s were nothing great but at least producers were attempting large scale films for those times with multi starrers. Now the egos of stars are so big and their self-confidence so fragile that they can’t can’t dare share the screen or credits with another star.

As for Marcus, I was expecting it from him. I am expecting him to laugh at Sooryavanshi’s collections by comparing it with very successful film in the next few years. So predictable. Lying in wait for films around LSC to flop and using any other successful film to have a dig at the one succesful film’s (Sooryvavanshi) collections. That’s the mantra. He probably woke up only now as he is not aware the doldrum Bolllywood has been in pre-Sooryavanshi. But this level of toxicity will not affect my liking of LSC, as I want it do very well as Aamir Khan deserves it thoroughly, just like I want RRR to do well for Rajamouli’s dedication while I also want Spiderman to do exceedingly well, as I am a big fan of the series. In fact, I am much bigger fan of the series than of Rohit Shetty’s cop universe. No comparison in there.

Easy to laugh at Akshay Kumar here, because he is the first one to face the storm and come out of it with respectably as well. Most of the others have ran away or have been simply absent for several years. If you work by their model, then you will have 5 Hollywood blockbusters in India, followed by 3 successful Akshay Kumar/Amitabh Bachan films and one mildly successful Salman Khan/Ajay Devgan film each year. The rest don’t even have enough work to start with, forget competing with Hollywood.

It won’t surprise me if the next Transformers starts competing against and beating the likes of Mission Cinderella, Moghul or Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali in India in 2023. It will affect those who aren’t doing enough work, but more importantly the industry, if the latter does not come out with more event films. It has happened to most film industries. I think Bollywood is not far off from there.

Anyway well said Rahul. Maybe multiplexes in India would be dominated by Hollywood.

We need movies like War and Sultan atleast, if not Dangal or Bajrangi.

Gradually market would open and niche movies would also start working. Till then Hollywood can really penetrate. Wait for Matrix Resurrection. Its not as big as a Marvel series like Spiderman, but can take a good opening.

In between 83 is squeezed. Hope we get a lime juice from Ranveer Singh, not a lemon from Kabir Singh. I am getting mixed feeling already.

    • Rahul – I don’t think Bollywood throwing money at a bunch of tentpoles or multistarrers is the answer. In fact I said post Bahubali I hope Bollywood doesn’t fall into this copy paste mode.

I agree with you mostly. We definitely need our A game out there.

      Content is always king.

Akshay deserves kudos for releasing Bell Bottom and then Sooryavanshi. But the reality is similar to what I said few weeks back. It’s a polarised model. The big movies will do well and there is another model which is pretty much now looking like OTT route for Bell Bottom and this Ayushmann movie (forget the name!).

A Bollywood tentpole – I’m sorry they don’t have excellent track records.

Star costs are ridiculously high. Do they need to be?

Bottom line just make solid scripts and it will work.

      Like

      • The answer lies in doing ‘good’ tentpoles on a frequent basis. Its not happening in Bollywood. On one hand we have garbage kumar delivering 5-6 mediocre films a year and on the other hand Aamir is doing one film in 4 years.

  6. 83 makers are despo now:

An exhibitor tells us that the team of 83 is not just competing with Spider-Man, as they have another opponent in the form of Jersey. “While it’s a known thing that exhibitors have refused to give 100% showcasing to 83 over Spider-Man from December 24. And hence, Reliance is now pulling another string. They have asked the exhibitors to give a 2-week assurance i.e. they will have to allot showcasing to 83 for two weeks,” a source informed Bollywood Hungama.

  7. It was being said the lacklustre business over the past few weeks was down to the Omicron covid19 strain but Spiderman – No Way Home has put an end to that crazy theory but that is not to say it wont be a threat in time. Spiderman – No Way Home has had a huge advance across the world but the virus is going to affect the business as countries like UK are seeing cancellations in not just cinema tickets but other social events also as public physch changes. This will probably be the case in Europe and US also so the numbers will still be huge across the world initially but they would have been even higher without this Omicron strain.

  9. The source also said, “Basically, they are willing to let go of one of the four or five shows at single screens to Jersey in their second week, and have asked multiplexes to ensure a major chunk of showcasing in prime time in their second week, and get preference over Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey. Yet again, as expected, the exhibitors have not taken these developments positively. The catch here is, the distributors of Jersey and RRR are the same – Pen Marudhar. So if single screen owners don’t give adequate showcasing to Jersey, they might either miss out on RRR or may have to pay a huge premium to acquire that film. Same way, multiplexes too will lose their bargaining power during RRR as seeing the move of Reliance Entertainment, team Jersey is clubbing their film with RRR to get maximum showcasing.”

The exhibitors are now left with only 2 options at the moment

Option 1 – Screen Spider-Man: No Way Home on 16th December, forgo 83 on 24th December, screen Jersey on 31st December followed by RRR on 7th January 2022.

Option 2 – Forgo Spider-Man: No Way Home on 16th December (which seems unlikely given the advance booking), screen 83 on 24th December, forgo Jersey on 31st December, and also forgo RRR on 7th January 2022.

It’s like a wedding vow between husband and wife (83 and Jersey, replace either with any name). Suddenly the eyecandy arrives (Hollywood, read Spiderman) and 83 wants to cheat now. Or all the other marriages made are looking at each other and realising it was a dumb move. Should have had some flexibility – maybe dated or courted a bit longer!

Typically Hollywood movies are front loaded in India so by time Jersey releases there will be space for 83 to expand anyways. In any case all this discussion matters if every movie in Bollywood are running at 100%
Also lets not forget that RRR releases on 7th. I think Jersey is the movie which will suffer the most. I have seen the original and it is nice watch though but not sure if people will flock to the theatre for it

With Sooryavanshi which had no such screen issues…they messed up the release by trying to arm twist exhibitors for a larger share. Finally Rohit Shetty intervenes and at 10 pm, yes the night before release issue got sorted.
Advance booking opportunity went out of window, esp corporate booking.

Now they are again being foolish. With 2500 screens they can still get big numbers. And if they do good business, they wohld still retain the shows. 83 is that kind of movies which would get good advance. But looks like this is going to be anothet messy release.

  13. Spiderman – No Way Home Hits It Out Of The Park On Day One
    Thursday 16 December 2021 23.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Spiderman No Way Home has hit it out the park with first day collections in the 35 crore nett range and there is a good chance that this figure could go higher as the final collections in the South come out in the morning can be higher than the estimates now. The collections are extraordinarily high in places like Bangalore and Hyderabad with some cinemas recording numbers as good as Avengers Endgame.

The business from Hindi circuits is phenomenal as well with East Punjab and West Bengal crossing the numbers of Sooryavanshi and Delhi / UP could be added to the list in the morning and maybe a couple of other circuits as well. The film has also beaten Sooryavanshi in Mumbai city and Pune by a healthy margin but the circuit will probably be less as Gujarat / Saurashtra is much lower.

The performance of the film gives some respite to the exhibition sector which has struggled post Sooryavanshi but does not make much difference to the film industry as for that tooget the feel good factor back we need the likes of 83 and Jersey to do well.

The film is probably the biggest opening post the pandemic in India as before this film it was the Telugu film Vakeel Saab with 35 crore nett plus but there is a huge difference between Spiderman – No Way Home and that film as this film will collect at high levels for many more days while Telugu films are about the first day.

If spidy makes more than sooryvanshi in hindi belt first weekend than we can say that sooryavanshi underperformed at some level.

At the same time, let’s not take every scenario to downgrade akshay.
Akshay, due to him working on multi films a year had movies ready to release and did so at OTT and Theatres. Hit/Flop aside, give him credit for at least having something to release which generated some interest and economy.

SRK shooting for pathan or aamir shooting for lcs doesn’t really help much with economy for daily earner who depends on cinema. also, not much interest for them shooting unless you’re a fan boy.

Let’s give at least some credit where it’s due.
I’m no akshay fan and find some of naveen fanboy posts silly but let’s give credit where it’s due.

Spiderman No Way Home had an outstanding first day as it collected around 33 crore nett plus making it the second biggest Hollywood release of all time after Avengers Endgame. This has come as a huge relief to exhibitors after the dull few weeks.

The performance is huge and the multiplex collections all over the country are insane. The film has also beaten the numbers of Sooryavanshi in West Bengal; and East Punjab which is phenomenal. All India it is the third best opening post pandemic after Vakeel Saab (Telugu) and Master (Tamil) but there will be huge difference post day one between these South films and Spiderman – No Way Home.

So 33 cr is equivalent with 43 cr. This is in line with what i said earlier –

Post diwali, following are pre pandemic changes-
Small / medium films are doing 30%. 30 cr is equal to 90-100 cr
Event films(Sooryavanshi) with good WoM are doing 60%. Would do 280-300 cr.
Event films with superb WoM like Spiderman are doing 80%. Spiderman would do 80% of its potential.

The industry will be rejoicing but there is still some concerns for our Hindi circuits as despite the business being fantastic it is not like pre pandemic and this is a huge event film. Going by the numbers in South this film should have have done 42-43 crore nett but performance in Hindi circuits is generally less than Infinity War while South is just 20% less than Endgame which did 53 crore nett on day one. If generally the film was lower across the country it would not matter much. Maharashtra was affected by the 50% rule especially in Mumbai and Pune but they still collected near Sooryavanshi range. The overall Mumbai circuit numbers is looking to come lower than expected due to restrictions.

Basically in pre pandemic times this film would have done 10 crore nett more and this 10 crore nett would have come from the Hindi circuits. This is a problem for the film industry but the film Spiderman – No Way Home will be a huge winner as its a four day weekend and there is still huge scope in Hindi circuits and it will hold well here. The drops are more likely in South.

After a historic start of Rs. 32.67 crore on Day 1, Spider Man: No Way Home has continued with its winning streak as the film held like a rock on the second day (Day 2) by collecting in the range of approx. Rs. 23 to 25 crore. The two-day total of Spider Man: No Way Home now stands in the range of Rs. 55 to 57 crore, and this is nothing but a simply fantastic result.

The movie is now headed to clock an extended weekend of Rs. 110 crore plus and go closer to the Rs. 150 crore mark by the end of first week. There is a drop of around 30% on the second day, but this was expected given that it’s coming off a record breaking day one. The collections in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and other Southern states have been impacted a little more due to the Pushpa wave. The film should show a daily growth of 10% again on Saturday and Sunday, with the combined figures expected in the range of Rs. 55 to 60 crore.

The movie is faring well all across the country – with South leading from the front. Maharashtra has recorded extraordinary occupancy, and it’s this territory which is impacted majorly due to 50% occupancy cap as there is major shortage of tickets as compared to the demand. The film has lost at least Rs. 5 crores in the two day run in Maharashtra.

Sooryavanshi aside, the figures of other Hindi releases are sheer disappointing as Spider Man will cross the lifetime figures of each and every Hindi film of 2021 by 12 noon on Saturday. This film would end up being the second true blue success in the Hindi circuits after Sooryavanshi, as all other films have failed to leave any sort of mark at the ticket windows.

Spider Man also has the chance to enter the Rs. 200 crore club to become the first Rs. 200 crore earner of India since the release of Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior in 2020.

  31. Pushpa Huge In Andhra – Hindi Is So So – Spiderman Update
    Friday 17 December 2021 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

    Excerpts

The Telugu film Pushpa took a huge opening in Andhra which will probably take it to the highest opening day in India post the pandemic of over 45 crore nett in all languages. The film was also released in Hindi but there are not many takers for this type of cinema with a huge Telugu feel in Hindi markets.

There is that Pan India thing which hardly means anything but some may actually expect some numbers form these films but is very hard as North India and East India dont take to the films and actors and its mainly Maharashtra where they can get collections. The film is looking to collect around 1.25 crore nett in Hindi which is a so so collection and if it can get to 1.50 crore nett then it can be called a fair collection.

The collections of the film in Andhra are huge as Hyderabad city had clocked up 6 crore nett in advance itself and Nizam / Andhra itself could be looking at a near 40 crore nett figure. The circuits like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are not showing too strong figures in Bangalore and Chennai. Spiderman – No Way Home is better in both these cities.

Spiderman – No Way Home has seen a drop in collections of 30-35% and most of this has come in the South circuits especially Nizam / Andhra due to Pushpa but both Mumbai and Delhi / UP held up better which is a good sign. The second day of the film should be in the 21-22 crore nett range giving it a 55 crore nett two day total. The film should gain momentum again over weekend.

The movie has been liked it seems.

The collections coming in from Maharashtra and CPCI single screens are very good and this is what is helped to push the film to the 3 crore nett mark. The figure could even go higher as the final numbers from Mumbai circuit could easily go to 1.50 crore nett.

The BJP had to face some major embarrassment on Friday when its spokesperson Aparjita Sarangi, a Lok Sabha MP from Odisha, while targeting Karnataka Congress MLA K R Ramesh Kumar over his controversial rape remarks, went on to criticise Assembly Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, who belongs to the BJP. Addressing the media at the BJP headquarters, Sarangi insisted that the “current Speaker” also should apologise for “laughing” at the remarks in the Assembly. Although BJP national media cell head Anil Baluni tried to correct her, Sarangi, a bureaucrat-turned-politician, did not oblige. Later, the party tried to do damage control by deleting the video of the press conference which went live. It then posted an edited version but it did not help much. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar and former minister Rajyavardhan Rathore tried to defend the Speaker by saying that he made no comment. Sources said Sarangi later told party leaders that she was not aware that Karnataka has a BJP Speaker.

  45. Spiderman And Pushpa (Hindi) Saturday Update
    Sunday 19 December 2021 01.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Spiderman – No Way Home has seen good growth on Saturday as collections should be around the 26 crore nett range giving it a three day total of 79 crore nett plus and the highest three day opening weekend in India post the pandemic beating the numbers of Sooryavanshi by around 3 crore nett.

There film has made solid gains in Mumbai and Delhi / UP with the latter going to a solid 14.50 crore nett apprx. The ratio of business for Hindi circuits against South India is much better on Saturday but still it is not like the blockbusters in pre pandemic times be it Endgame, Infinity War or The Jungle Book.

Pushpa Hindi seems to have solid gains in the big centres where collections have come and these gains are 50% and even 60% which is huge. But the ratio of business from these is very low and a lot will depend on the numbers in the morning from mass centres where the film scored very well on day one as these would not have grown or at least not as much as the multiplex dominated centres.

There is a good chance of some solid growth but it will all depend on Maharashtra, Gujarat, CP Berar, Marathawada and Odisha where the film is doing very well.

  46. Pushpa (Hindi) Shows Growth On The Second Day
    Sunday 19 December 2021 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Pushpa (Hindi) did well on day two as it collected around 3.75 crore nett and growth of around 15%. There was huge growth in the big multiplexes of aroudn 50-60% but there is only around 15% coming from these on day one. The ratio has gone a little higher on day two to around 20%.

The film crucially held up pretty well in mass pockets as most areas were pretty flat. There were minor drops in the areas that were very strong on day one but that is fine as they are coming of good levels. The two day business of the film in Hindi is around 7 crore nett and the places doing well should show strong gains on Sunday. The slight issue is that the 50% capacity rule in Maharashtra will affect the single screen business as its quite likely mainy of these would have gone housefull if full capacity allowed but now they will have to do with 50%.

These are solid results for the film especially as this pan India thing means nothing in Hindi circuits and umbers never really going to be big as its only Hollywood that is really for all India. Eventually a dubbled Telugu film without any branding going over 10 crore nett for the weekend which this will easily do is a good result.

    Friday – 3,30,00,000

    Saturday – 3,75,00,000

  47. Spiderman No Way Home continued to do strong business on day three as it collected 26-26.5 crore nett. The film gained around 30% from Friday as multiplexes across the country showed solid gains. The film remains better in the South compared to Hindi markets but the gap now is not as big in day one. Still this film would have done far more in Hindi circuits pre pandemic than it has now.

The three day business of the film is the highest so far pre pandemic as it beat Sooryavanshi though Pushpa will beat the numbers of Spiderman – No Way Home. Sooryavanshi was a one language release while the others are multiple languages..

  52. The advance of 83 started today (Sunday) and has seen reasonable results but maybe not as strong as the industry expected as it sees 83 as a huge film probably due to the budget when in reality it is more of a word of mouth film for the audience

The first day saw advance open mainly at the national multiplex chains of PVR, Inox and Cinepolis and a few other properties. There were sales of around 15k which is reasonable and the film could be looking at a 10 crore nett advance before release. This would be the biggest advance for Hindi films post the pandemic as Sooryavanshi did not really open where the majority of advance sales come.

The advance does not compare with last weeks Spiderman – No Way Home which sold over 1.25 lakh tickets in the same period. It is 12% of Spiderman – No Way Home on the first day of advance sales but the trend is different for Hindi films and before release it should reach 25-30% of Spiderman No Way Home.

The film is releasing a day before Christmas so it will get a good boost with on the day sales especially in the evenings at multiplexes but if the film could get to 15 crore nett plus in advance that actually would be a good result for the film.

These collections are insane yet they would have been higher as Europe has been affected the new corona virus threat which would have kept some of potential audience away. This threat is likely to get bigger in the coming Xmas and New Year period but as long as cinemas stay open there is always going to be an audience for such a film.

I believe it’ll be great movie for Sara and will be her show all the way and Dhanush will be the scene stealer. Akshay will be fine in the supporting role who is just in Sara’s imagination and I think that will compensate for the age difference. Music by ARR is another huge plus point. It is sad that it’s coming on TV and not in theaters. It had potential to do at least okay business if the movie turns out to be real good. Anyways, looking forward to the movie and good luck to the movie!

  60. Pushpa (Hindi) did decent business of around 12 crore nett across India with the Maharashtra, Gujarat and Odisha regions showing good collections. Gujarat was very good on Sunday as it went past the 1 crore nett mark. The other areas did not perform too well especially North India. UP had a good jump in some single screens on Sunday but the bigger centres performance like Lucknow, Kanpur and Dehradun were not too good.

The jump on Sunday could have been bigger but the areas that had been scoring from day one did not jump. A lot depends on how the film holds on Monday but it stands a good chance to hold on Monday as the ticket pricing drop factor will not affect much its not doing much business where the ticket prices drop on Monday as the ticket pricing drop factor will not affect much its not doing much business where the ticket prices drop on Monday. Also the way Maharashtra has performed over the three days it should hold well and so should Gujarat. Pushpa also collected around 2 crore nett in Telugu in Hindi circuits with 65% of the business coming from Maharashtra and Odisha.

These numbers are all fine with a low risk investment film like Pushpa but are very depressing numbers for a film like RRR which is another Telugu dubbed film but with a huge investment risk which is on the lines of a Hindi blockbuster films. There is no business from South India as the original versions of these films play there so North India becomes a must for a bigger film and that is a huge task as they hardly find an audience there and how far can Maharashtra take you unless you are Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior. The first weekend collections of Pushpa (Hindi) are as follows.

    Friday – 3,30,00,000

    Saturday – 3,75,00,000
