  1. Watched Cobra Kai (season 4) in 3 sitting. Enjoyed it a lot. Really liked the message it was delivering towards the end and your way is not the only way. Different approaches will work for different people under different situations.

Minnal Murali – My goodness, our own super hero movie and it was joy to watch from beginning to end. Low budget film but it looked right. Can’t wait for part 2. I hope they stay true to core of the story where there’s an emotional story which connects with you. The guy who plays Simbhu is very good, he is actually the movie.

Honsala Rakh – Cute little Panjabi film. I think this film had done very well in Canada. Seen plenty of movies on same theme but not a bad watch at all.

Chorri – It was okay. The message is disturbing if still true.

  2. Pushpa: The Rise overtakes 83 at box office in Hindi; Earns 1 Cr more than the Ranveer Singh starrer…

The third Monday collection of Pushpa’s Hindi version is approximately Rs. 2.60 Cr while the second Monday collection of 83 is approximately Rs. 1.80 Cr. While Pushpa’s Hindi version showed a 25 percent fall vis-à-vis its third Friday, 83 fell by nearly 60 percent. The appreciation that 83 is receiving is not in synchronisation with its box office numbers.

I am happy that the situation is not that bad. Happy that 83 is getting to 100 crore. Haooy that Pushpa is making news. Telugu industry is not about Rajamouli and Prabhas only. Spidy crossed the important 200 crore mark.
In a way grateful to Jersey for makng 83 get some important bo collection. Disappointed that RRR and others have to wait.
About high ticket price for 83. Some still want to watch it inspite of high ticket prices for an event film which is good news. Nothing wrong in being a multiplex film and nothing wrong in being a singlescreen film.
Wishing you all a belated happy new year!

    • Agree, Jersey postponing helped all 3 films, more so for 83. If Jersey had released, i think 83 would have crashed bigtime past friday.

There were many good/great films in pat that didn’t do well at boxoffice for various reasons. 83 isn’t the first one and it will not be the last one to fall in this scenario.

Biggest benefit of Pushpa will go to KGF Chapter 2.

      • 83 is not about ranveer or Kabir Khan. It is more about Kapil dev and his team and that victory. A respectable bo collection will be a tribute for them. That some still cherish them to this day.

  5. The entire talk about 83 benefiting only due to festive season is complete nonsense. We’ve had films like Tees Maar Khan, Thugs of Hindostan, Zero among others which have tanked on the very first week despite adequate festive dates and no competition. The fact that 83 has held stable for over 10 days despite being in a 3 way tussle in itself is testimony to its appreciation (pointless getting into imdb ratings of 83 as against the likes of Zero, Dabang 3 and Thugs). The downslide on the second Monday has more to do with reduced capacity, night curfews and other stringent restrictions in major metropolitan cities (as opposed to smaller centers where Pushpa’s ruling the roost) and hence not only has 83 seen a slight fall but so has Spiderman. I hope I don’t receive a response from the usual suspects on this one. Got no interest in justifying something crystal clear to folks as blind as a bat.

PS : I paid more for War on the first weekend at a PVR multiplex in Bangalore than I paid for 83 on its first day of release. Got no idea where this high ticket price hysteria is being created from (except BOIs usual idiocy of course).

  6. Spiderman:NWH is going to wrap up below 2`15 crores. Might be less than 210 crores as well.

In Karnataka, a 50% cap on theatres has been imposed along with a weekend curfew.

Ajith Kumar’s Valimai is postponed and theatres in TN are going to be shut down.

In a week from now, theatres all across India are most probably going to shut down completely.

But, of course, political rallies will continue without any social distancing.

    • The news about Valimai is not confirmed as of yet, but it is quite likely to be postponed after TN government releases more details about the imminent lockdown tomorrow.

  7. Funny, 83 12th day is pretty much same as Zero, a film which was a disaster???

Never seen so much excuse being given for a film…

Anyways, Pushpa isn’t having any issues Day 12 or day 18…

    Like

    • Zero’s day 12 was a New Year weekend, 83 isn’t. Zero did not release in the middle of a pandemic with a spike in cases, 83 did. Zero tanked overseas, 83 hasn’t. Never seen such pointless excuses being given to drag down a well made film.

    • Zero’s Day 12 was New Year — a holiday, with no restrictions or curfews or lockdowns in place.

        **Edited**

I will compare numbers correctly when it makes sense, not going to sit hear trying to justify 83 is success by comparing it to a movie that most consider disaster.

How does 83 New Year Day number looks against Dangal New Years day number? Which again is a dumb comparison cause the situation isn’t same. Comparing blockbuster movie to an average earner at best (which is what 83 is).

How is Pushpa Day 18th number looking against 83?

        Like

        • **Edited**, KRK and BOI are calling 83 a disaster, so yes, I had to compare and show what a real disaster looks like.

          **Edited**

Pushpa’s day 18 is not even 1 crore greater than 83’s and the latter is actually going to be the HGOTY in the overseas territory.

Oh, and by the way, Pushpa is a FLOP in AP — the place and the industry it came from. Let’s talk about that too.

        • No one is disputing Pushpa’s box office run. The dispute is against the genuine above average decent run of a well made film like 83 (sans any semi naked item songs and overt melodrama associated with most Hindi-Telugu mass entertainers nowadays) being passed off as a disaster or a flop.

She would call me ‘Bala’ which in Marathi means son and I would refer to her as Mai which means mother. We actually shared a mother and son relationship. We were in touch. Whenever she was in Mumbai she would call and meet me and whenever I was in Pune, I would go to meet her. Mr. Amitabh Bachchan was present during the music launch of the film and later she was also a part of one the episodes of Kaun Banega Crorepati. She would always call me on Gudi Padwa. The last time I spoke to her was last April on Gudi Padwa. She was legendary and a pillar of strength. I am still trying to come to terms with her death. She was sabki mai and a farishta (angel).

There was a change in the mood of the nation for long spell, from 2004/2005 onwards where toning down the hostilities between the 2 nations were the talk of the day. It reflected in Indian cinema. Films like Main Houn Na, Veer Zara, based on brotherhood of the nations were being made, keeping a target Pakistani audience in UK and Dubai in mind. And they did quite well.

But the mood has changed again during the last few years. Anil Sharma delivered a hard hitting drama epic with a very well etched-out love story back then and it created a never-seen-before kind of frenzy.

Both him and Sunny Deol are past their peak. But who knows? The mood in the country has changed again, now akin to those times when the first part released.

A hard hitting epic may work again. The first part was a hurricane, though. Gripped the nation in a way I have not seen again since then.

            Today
Pushpa went from 2.4cr to 2.2Cr which is 9% drop. They say ROCK STEADY
83 went from 1.4Cr to 1.2Cr which is 17% drop. They say FREEFALL.
It’s the exaggerated language that is deplorable. And when you manipulate words like this you are trying your hardest to be extreme rather than stating facts.
For Pushpa say it remains steady with typical fall expected.
For 83 say given it’s total collections, the daily falls are simply not helping or something like this.

They need an education in English language to stop taking extreme positions on numbers.

Anyone can rewrite their reporting to not sound condescending or plain mean.

There leading headlines are just typical of a bad news broadcaster or tabloid sensationalist headline grabbing garbage newspaper.

    • Ranveer Singh, in a recent interview with IndiaToday.in, said that a film like 83 happens once in 20 years, and the last one that saw this kind of euphoria was Aamir Khan’s Lagaan (2001). Perhaps that is where it went wrong. The creative liberties Lagaan took worked because it never claimed to be retelling history. Teen-guna lagaan – like a host of golden daffodils…ten thousand…at a glance – wasn’t about the number but stood as a symbol of oppression we could all collectively identify with. Cut to 83, when a Pakistani Army official calls up an Indian Army border base camp to inform them of a ceasefire so that the Indian jawans can listen to the match on the radio, it all feels construed, and unnecessarily.

Yet having different strokes for crass masala films since as per 2019 methodology, Sooryavanshi should be nothing more than a Semi Hit.

The site is NOTHING to be proud of. Today I looked at a Deloitte paper on India film trends from 2019. Its on Google and you can search for it. All of Deloitte’s data on box office came from Bollywood Hungama or Koimoi – data and verdicts. No professional company that has proper standards would use a third class site like BOI. Total own goal or reputational risk written all over it. They would be ridiculed.

          • @Jay-Is that for me? Antim is a poor theatrical performer. An outright flop in every aspect. And yes we need to go easy on economics in these times towards films that are biting the bullet and going for theatrical release in times when the industry is on life support.

            Liked by 1 person

          • I understand the sentiment but isn’t it being reserved for personal likes or dislikes rather than derivative of economics? Even I wouldn’t call Bell Bottom a disaster, I’ve said elsewhere below average or underperformed or worst case a flop is fair.
83 is looking at much bigger losses.

Here each film should be given it’s ‘actual’ verdict and then you can slide it up one notch or something.

I would like to know your ‘actual ‘ economic verdict for both Bell Bottom and 83 ignoring the external issues first.

          • Ps. I’m all for being liberal, kind and nice in these times of hardship…but let’s first get the facts correct.
What is the economic verdict for 83 and Bell Bottom. We can then take it from there.

(I know teachers dealing with this kind of stuff who have to provide a grade to students. Students who haven’t sat exams because covid situation cancelled exams. But in such cases a sensible, transparent process is followed to be fair to every student. However, in doing this the average grade will always increase. A teacher can assume a student trending at D will get to B. So they give a B. But there are always students who trended to B who end up at C because of nerves, 1 bad question. It’s not something a teacher can predict. They will get an A. Not C. Imagine being that student who got predicted less than what they are achieving…it wouldn’t happen. Hence leniency will creep in.

Here 100% there is a negative economic verdict for both 83 and Bell Bottom. It’s that reference I would like to know first. Then apply what adjustment you feel fair).

          • good points Jay.

My thought on it is more from availability Vs. sold.

The argument for most films thrown out is that if 100% capacity was available, it would have done lot more. True but at the same time how do you explain Bell Bottom collecting only like 7 to 9% in limited number of theatres?
I can understand if it was colleting 75% from the limited release than you can have that argument that more theatres would have added lot more money.

I think right now only movie you can make solid argument for is Pushpa, i think that movie would have collected lot more if there were theatre available for it and more shows.

            Like

          • Yes covid impact is much more on films that show excellent WOM. Rest can’t complain as much.

Some PVR investor data I seen recently shows average occupancy in theatres is 35%. Now I checked for other entertainment medium in UK/US like live theatres. They operate at 80-90% average. A football stadium in UK will operate at 90%+.

So I don’t buy into this restrictions stuff too much. A complete show cancellation is a legitimate negative impact though. Here you lose the 35% audience you were expected to have.

Bell Bottom opening %’s for occupancy tell you enough about it’s opening. The addatoday.com data I’m sure won’t ever have averaged above 50% throughout any morning/afternoon/evening report. So it’s hardly a great point. If it is having an impact it’s offset by having a run at cinema with restrictions too. It ends up having a longer tail…Saket’s day 1 comparison to lifetime showed 12x or something. No way would Bell Bottom have that multiplier in precovid times.

            Like

          • “Saket’s day 1 comparison to lifetime showed 12x or something. No way would Bell Bottom have that multiplier in precovid times.”

            Of course not.

That’s why i always say that right now, we really don’t good sense of anything when it comes to boxoffice because everything is so fluid.

And everyone can manipulate data how they want. Like someone had put up an argument few days ago that Pushpa collection for past Tuesday was only 1 Cr more than 83. But when you look in context of 83 made 1.5 Cr and Pushpa made 2.5 Cr, you have one movie collecting 60% more than the other film.

            Like

          • And 83 is multiples times a bigger film than Pushpa (in this market) and also earlier in it’s run…

            Like

          • Even by BOIs vague logic, 83 has recovered 180+ on a budget of 250 Cr. The loss margin is under 30% in a worst case scenario which makes it eligible for a Below Average verdict even in normal times. Its certainly an Average performer in present times, all things considered. The same cannot be said about Bell Bottom since its adjusted collection would hardly be at par with a Below average Gold.

Taran Adarsh for box office verdict / classification. He is most consistent. So will go by his verdict, though i still see him using pre pandemic system of judging based on Distributor’s cost.

BOI is good for early box office numbers and response because theirs is fastest and usually different from Producers total, which Taran takes. The way BOI is going hard on 83, there seems to be an agenda which noone is ready to accept.

        • BOIs numbers are manipulated as per their agenda. There’s no ways on earth that they have access to numbers before the producers or distribution sources. Unless there’s obvious proof of fudging from the production end, we need to stick to Taran’s/BollywoodHungama numbers. And this entire hoax of reporting footfalls to the last possible decimal is a joke!

          • What i am doing is a prepandemic adjustment for the movies, offsetting the loss in theatricals with gain from OTT offer. I beleive just like inflation adjustment or holiday / non holiday release difference, this is important to do specially while giving a verdict.

Unfortunately this suggestion of mine seems to be my way of looking at things across all movies incl Bell Bottoms, Antim, Tadap or 83. I dont see any one else looking at it in this way.

            Like

          • There is no clear cut way to judge success of a movie on OTT. Web series yes, if they commission a new one it’s a good indicator. Unless you can clearly calculate a subscriber increase related to a specific release – it’s impossible.

Frankly the OTT deals are not struck to offset distributor losses. Distributors don’t get these in their pockets.

You are deriving a producer wise profit profile. Even in prepandemic world many producers tabled profits – it doesn’t make those films hit films. A successful film surely has to succeed against the cost of distribution. Your method doesn’t cover account for a distribution loss in verdict.

I mean did you use to contaminate satellite deals to offset distribution costs before covid? Think of OTT deal is iteration of satellite deal not theatrical release deal.

            30% entertainment tax

70 rs shared in 55:45ratio between multiplex and producer (40 rs to cinema and 30 rs to producer or distributor basically the person dealing with the cinema chain.)

Week 2 the ratio becomes 45:55 between cinema and producer/distributor

            Week 3 – 35:65

These ratios are not fixed and keep changing. If studio has a strong movie like YRF or Dharma, they can command a higher share from the cinema as per their terms agreed pre release as per buzz .

All above indicates that it’s a difficult business to be in due to high taxes and secondly the producer is rewarded with a higher share if his movie sticks around in forthcoming weeks post release clearly rewarding content.

Above from Quora. Typically this implies a cost to distribute. The Bollywood Hungama link basically suggests same without providing distribution cost.

            https://boxofficeworldwide.com/movies-latest-news/salman-khan-aayush-sharmas-antim-will-be-released-on-a-commission-basis-by-zee-studios/

Antim above maybe sold on commission basis as explained.
Quote ‘Zee has decided to release the film as a distributor across the globe on a commission basis. They will be charging approximately 8% to 10% standard commission meaning, take away 8% to 10% of the distributor share leaving the rest for SKF.’

Commission model is looking like standard 8-10% take home of DS. So in Bell Bottom case are you implying from 32Cr after entertainment tax Bell Bottom gets 10% of distribution share.

I will leave it to likes of Krish, Rahul etc who might be better placed to explain this better.

Bollywood Hungama had previously reported that Aayush Sharma will be joining the cast of Salman Khan and Sajid Nadiadwala’s upcoming collaboration, Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali. However, we can now confirm that Aayush Sharma is no longer a part of this action comedy, which stars Pooja Hegde as Salman’s love interest.

“After being appreciated in Antim, Aayush has taken this decision to not take up character roles in big films. Salman too feels the same, as the track of Aayush in Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali was not a significant one. He was to play the role of Salman’s younger brother, though the entire film revolved around Salman’s character,” a source told Bollywood Hungama. The source also added that Salman’s other protégé; Zaheer Iqbal will however continue being a part of Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali.

“Two more actors will come on board to play key roles in this Farhad Samji directed action comedy. The casting work is currently going on in full swing as the movie will take off by the end of February,” the source further told us. Meanwhile, South Superstar Venkatesh has come on board to play the parallel lead to Salman Khan in Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali.

His character has been kept under wraps for now; however, we heard that a top Southern actress will soon join the cast to play the romantic lead alongside Venky. Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali is a reunion of Salman with Sajid after the blockbuster, Kick, and we trust the duo to deliver big yet again with this high octane commercial entertainer.

Anything outside of it is part of global gross (including dubbed Hindi version in Hindi circuits just like Mandarin version of Dangal in China). Hindi circuits for a dubbed Telugu film is as much as alien market as overseas. Exact reason why I believe HGOTY should be restricted to domestic market and original language alone, Sooryavanshi in 2021 (not the multi lingual Spiderman since its Hindi version barely grossed 50 Cr).

    • Sad…remember watching several movies at Santosh and Nartaki when i was in Bengaluru.
Nartaki had all the awards of golden jubilees of 60s and 70s in the foyer area.

The entire Majestic area in Bengaluru had many cinema halls. I still remember watching 2 back to back movies as theatres were just across the street from one another or mere 2-3 blocks away. They were pretty well managed too.

The theatrical world has changed now.

Till Taran gives his, we have to consider Bell Bottom as a disaster as per BOI.

This would be unfortunate because it was cheered widely by all exhibitors and distributors for its performance at box office. However an Akshay Kumar movie doing 32 cr nett does make it sound like a disaster. So be it.

On the other hand, we saw many big stars like Salman Khan and John Abraham giving films one shouldn’t ever dare to watch. Yes, we’re talking about Radhe and Satyameva Jayate 2!

You must have got an idea above, where we’re really heading to. We have shortlisted some worst films of 2021, which should be missed at all costs. So, fasten your seat belts to know what was the worst of last ‘gloomy’ year!

The others are Bhuj and Hungama 2.

I watched it last night and found it to be an okay movie. I think it connected in hindi belt because there really aren’t any decent action film that is made. I liked that they didn’t have too much violence, actions were more of like early 90s hindi films.

Fahad Fazil scenes were brilliant, both “BRAND” scenes were well shot.

  55. Pushpa is a long film. I could not watch it in one go. Today I watched three fourths. Rest I will watch when I am free.
    My take so far.
It is a simple story and it is raw. Once you get used to the hero, you will enjoy his antics. His backstory tugs at our hearts. We start to empathise with him from the beginning. He has a sidekick Keshava. The hero is invincible and so we are not too worried about his safety! There is a lovestory, There are some very violent scenes and mixing of so many dialects, languages. The hero mixes and matches telugu, Kannada, tamil, hindi effortlessly. The slang used is peculiar to rayalaseema. And then there is Samantha’s oo antava song.
The usual cat and mouse games with the police.
When I finish watching, I will write more about the film.

  58. 83 will release on digital platforms after 8 weeks of theatrical run globally, says co-producer
Shibasish Sarkar, one of the co-producers of Ranveer Singh’s 83, said on Thursday that the film will release on OTT or TV only after an 8-week run in cinema halls.
Even as Ranveer Singh’s 83 struggles to pull cine-goers to theatres due to the rise in Omicron cases in India, the makers of the film continue to remain committed and have announced that the film will release on OTT or TV only after an 8-week run in cinema halls.

Shibasish Sarkar, the former CEO of Reliance Entertainment, who is also one of the co-producers of the Kabir Khan directorial on Thursday confirmed the same on Twitter.

He tweeted, “Film 83 will be released on Digital platforms or Satellite Television at least after 8 weeks of theatrical run globally.”

So for now its just Mumbai, Pune and Kolkata that 83s gonna collect from. The rest of the Hindi circuits would aid Pushpa Chameli’s collections via taalis, seetis and front bench perverts ogling at Samantha and Rashmika.

I could not stand many of those scenes and terrible violence. There is no difference between item girl and the heroine.
This film is C grade. Not even B grade. And I wonder whether Taran, Boi have seen this movie or they are simply ogling at the boxoffice only. The hero does not have any charm compared to even other charmless ones. He looks like another extra or side character. Of course it is realistic portrayal of a charmless law breaker. 65. Fact 1 : Mass audiences of the Hindi belt have proven to be far more receptive of southern films and their actors like Prabhas & Allu Arjun while the Telugu and Tamil masses are to reciprocate the gesture.

Fact 2 : Bollywood production houses like Dharma and Excel are more than happy to distribute southern films like Bahubali and KGF thereby making sure their dubbed Hindi versions find well over 2000 screens for release while producers down south are yet to accept the presence of dubbed versions of films like Dangal, Padmaavat and War which barely find 200-300 screens for their regional versions. Hence high quality Bollywood films like Dangal are now having to rely on dubbed Mandarin versions in China in order to outgross crass masala entertainers like Bahubali 2 on a global platform.

    • Fact 3: The Telugu and Tamil markets are at 50% of the Hindi market’s potential individually. With the restrictions, the Hindi market was only at 60% capacity, allowing equal comparisons between it and the Telugu/Tamil markets, which were open for a longer time as well.

      • Actually the seat capacity issue might be a myth, but I’m not able to figure out what exactly the Kerala box office (operating under similar constraints) offers. If Kerala box office (under stricter rules than the North) is working, then 2021 must be the worst year ever for Hindi cinema.

      • Agree with Henry on 83, i dont’ think it would have made much regardless. Obviously it would have made more if there was no covid, etc… but it would not have made as some of the number are being thrown out. If barely touching 100 cr would have made 200 Cr in 2019 scenario, than can we say that 200 Cr grosser sooryavanshi would have easily made 400 cr in 2019 scenario?

Sooryavanshi collected about 26, 24 and 27 Cr first 3 days.
83 collected about 13, 17 and 17 Cr first 3 days. It’s not like 83 took flying start, it started okay and stayed okay and than fell sharply after new year, after that it fell below Pushpa daily collection but lot in terms percentage. If Jersey had released, 83 would not have gotten to 90 Cr.

83 did okay by getting 100, but i’m not going to start making arguments for it that it would have somehow made 200 cr in 2019, than we have to double up on all movies including sooryavanshi getting to 400 Cr.

        • Though a generic rule but the one i am using gets it close to prepandemic numbers.

So in a nutshell Post Diwali and opening of Guj/Maha and several other states till cinemas started to close again –

Non event good wom films (Chandigarh/Tadap) are doing 25-30% of its pre pandemic business

Non event excellent wom films (Pushpa Hindi) are doing 50% of its pre pandemic business

Event good wom films (Sooryavanshi/83) are doing 60-70% of its pre pandemic business.

Event very good wom films (Baahubali2/Dangal/Spiderman) should do 80-90% of its pre pandemic business

          ========

So using the above rule, we can check the pre pandemic numbers. Ofcourse this doesnt have any impact other than the new box office classification.

          83 would have made 170- 180 cr
Pushpa Hindi would have made 200 cr
Sooryavanshi would have made 285- 300 cr
Chandigarh would have made 80 cr
Tadap would have made 90 cr
Antim would have made 100 cr

Do you think it adds up reasonable?

BOI would have come hammers and tong on LSC while entire Aamir Khan brigade (90% of this forum, quite detached from real work where it is 10% or so) would have come with golden hammers and sharpened tongs. 😀

        • 83 also worked big time with the same target audience. Its a loved film. Except that not all came to watch because of pandemic or availability of an alternative. Those that were not target audience for 83 did not bother. Pls dont mix pre pandemic expectation with what 83 faced.

Its an apprehension just based on the concept on which this movie is based. Once we see the trailer, would know more. And this apprehension is not misplaced, it applies to all big budget concept movies.

Again one can always challenge apprehensions but i am sure it exists to some extent.

There will be comparisons and some criticism too. Except one or two, we are all grounded and can face the reality. He did not stick to christmas release. Maybe its a wait and watch game for him. It is his home production and no fee for him. Except Kareena and Chay, there are no big stars.

  87. Top Five Biggest Losers Of All Time – 83 Tops
    Wednesday 12 January 2022 13.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

There have been many disaster films in Hindi cinema since the Sohrab Modi film Jhansi Ki Rani in 1953 which was the first film to lose a huge amount of money. The film only lost 30 lakh but at that time there were hardly any films made on a budget of 30 lakhs and it was a huge amount for that time.

There are two ways at looking at disasters, one is the amount of money they lose and then there are complete washout films which just tank but sometimes they do not lose the most money as the budgets are lower and many times there is decent recovery from non theatrical revenue against the budget.

These washouts would include films like RGV Ki Aag (2007), Drona (2008), Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey (2010), Zanjeer (2013), Bombay Velvet (2015) Mirziya (2015), Fitoor (2016), Rangoon (2017) among others. 83 does not come in this list as its not what you call a washout but more of a rejected film. The washout films are the ones where the public just does not care for these films and dont even give them a chance.

Below is a list of the top five losers in Hindi cinema and these are the films to have lost 50 crore or more but only one of these films is a disaster and a washout also and that is Bombay Velvet. The others are also disasters due to heavy losses but they are rejected films and not washouts. The number in brackets is the loss of the film. The washout result of Bombay Velvet can be seen by the footfalls against the other films. Zero will remain with the highest footfalls of these films as its likely that 83 will not even reach the level of Mohenjo Daro.

    1. 83 (80 cr)

    Footfalls – 52 lakhs apprx (2 weeks)

    2. Bombay Velvet (70 cr)

    Footfalls – 22.24 lakhs

    3. Zero (70 cr) (on valued SRK remuneration)

    Footfalls – 68.74 lakhs

    4. Mohenjo Daro (55 cr)

    Footfalls – 60.17 lakhs

    5. Jagga Jasoos (50 cr)

Bombay Velvet was really the mother of all disaster. Its amazing how Anurag Kashyap still survives.

Growing up, Roop ki raani choron ka raaja was called the biggest flop of all time. Then Salman’s Chadramukhi overtook it in terms of losses. Not sure where these two rank now?

  88. After being accused of making sexist remarks against badminton player Saina Nehwal, actor Siddharth on Tuesday took to social media to apologise. In an open letter, he called Saina his champion, and said that he was trying to make a joke with his original comment, but it ‘didn’t land’. The shuttler responded to Siddharth’s apology by saying that the matter is ‘about women’ and wondered why the actor changed his stance after making the comment.

“He only said it and he is now apologising. I was surprised to see myself trending on Twitter that day. I haven’t spoken to him but I am happy that he apologised,” she said on the sidelines of the ongoing India Open, according to news agency PTI. “See, it is about women, he shouldn’t target a woman like that but it’s okay, I am not bothered about it, I am happy in my space and god bless him,” she added.

Identifying himself as an ‘ally’ of the feminist movement, Siddharth wrote in his open letter, “Dear Saina, I want to apologise to you for my rude joke that I wrote as a response to a tweet of yours, a few days ago. I may disagree with you on many things but even my disappointment or anger when I read your tweet, cannot justify my tone and words. I know I have more grace in me than that. As for the joke… If a joke needs to be explained, then it wasn’t a very good joke to begin with. Sorry about a joke that didn’t land.”

Sid in no way can match his game. Agree with Munna…he tried to take a dig on Modi using Saina’s tweet. He fell prey to Modi, not to Saina.

Theatres were having no cboice than adhere to this demand. Else for their business, they would keep the tix proce moderate and food price high and make more profit.

Now with high tix price, foot falls have reduced and profit of exhibitors are taking a hit.

Finally demand supply and market efficiency will rule. Government interventions seems to be temporary.

Cinema ticket is entertainment product. 2-3 hours max. Deeply silly comparison. Cinema ticket should be reasonable. Inflate food and drink.

It’s poor economics to inflate ticket prices all the time. You are pricing people out not just from ticket revenue but also food and drink revenue.

        • I have no idea whether the inflation is done on the producer’s behest or whether its the exhibitor’s call. But half the people visiting the theater might not be interested in snacks or popcorn and hence inflating f&b pricing does make a lot more business sense than inflating ticket prices and driving footfalls away.

And audience have differing purchasing power. There is a famous story regarding Ford Model T and GM (“GM should offer not cheaper cars but better quality cars in a greater variety.”). Sholay, HAHK, 3 Idiots are universal. But most of the movies have different audience (there is definitely an overlap). My point is you can have affordable cinema but if Salman fans want to pay Rs 2000 on first three days of Antim, let them pay. Or some couple want to pay Rs 3000 in director cut at PVR..that should also be fine. But smaller cities should have smaller halls and cheaper ticket prices. If we look at HAHK release strategy, they first renovated dilapidated halls, increased the ticket price..and that made sure female gender showed up in a safe and clean surroundings. And there was pricing out in the strategy but once WOM became strong they moved to other smaller cinemas.

My local specifically stated that for NTTD they increased prices and they kept them there for Spiderman. Once you hit a price point you rarely go down nowadays. It doesn’t happen in sports, theatre pricing. Cinema prices have only gone one way.

            Like

          • if You keep increasing prices at certain point people are going to stop watching movies at your location. People should study why there have been so many closures of single screen cinema. Relatively they have been cheap. I think it has to do with operating larger cinema and content not matching audience taste /sensibility.

BOIs entire rant on 83s economics falls flat when you consider the fact that 83s pre pandemic cost was 150 cr (at par with War, cannot possibly be more!) and an additional 50 cr due to pandemic postponement. Even in a worst case scenario the total cost is 200 cr approx and as per cost vs recovery model, the global recovery is 170-180 cr which is an ROI of -10-15% and nowhere near disasters like Zero or Bombay Velvet. This 260 cr figure and the biggest disaster tag is a figment of BOIs imagination. Yes the distributors of B/C centers have lost big, but they did so during the so called Semi Hits of Jai Ho & Dilwale too.

    Pushpa: Hindi dubbed

A strictly okay watch that is boring for the most part with none of the scenes standing out. Well, maybe the penultimate scene at the police station with the hero and his arch nemesis. It never derails completely but is just not convincing enough.
It is as expected an 80s style entertainer and has a hero with street smart antics and flat unidimensional characters that have no depth whatsoever. The women are meant to be protected and harassed (a couple of scenes involve paying money for sexual favours that are played for comic effect). But theek hai. It’s a mass movie meant for entertainment that knows what people want and not films like 83. Kya karein!

100%. This is what it is. Films like these are based on strong characters. Most of them have super hero capabilities. Pushpa is an unabashed bucolic criminal. Someone who no one would want to meet in person.

But probably cinema provides a medium to meet.
