They should do that for every fun and hit movie of south so that Bollywood is forced to write something original rather than do these lazy remakes and get easy hits.

        • Partially Agree. Every south remake has been bettered in Bollywood in acting, craftsmanship and overall quality. They had to cut down on grossness to make it bearable.

On its own, there will be several scenes which will make audience squirm in their seats.

I think dubbed film has a limited audience. Pushpa hindi came during pandemic at a right time. It also had few unbearable scenes which needed to be changed for better result. Let Pushpa Rule come and get sold for 80 cr to distributors. The boxoffice game then begins.

BTW, do we know how many remakes south indian movies do of Bollywood?

          Like

          • South also does remake of Hindi movies. Andhadhun and Pink both have been remade recently. While Bollywood tries to remake the big South Indian masala movies, South remakes the small content movies I think.

Telugu filmmakers should stick to cheap one liners and item songs alone. That’s what sells in single screens of Andhra, UP, MP and Bihar.

        • Ala.. has one great addition that all the main characters are from Hindi zone. If they get Murli Manohar, Sachin Khedkar, Tabu and Pooja Hedge to dub their own lines and Shreyas to dub for Allu Arjun , it can truly do wonders as it’ll feel like you are watching proper Hindi movie with South leading hero.

          Liked by 1 person

          • Ala is a clean family watch. There is nothing to squirm and it can prove to be a huge multiplex hit. It is for A class audience as well as the B and C. This movie is second biggest Telugu hit after Bahubali 2. It can work for sure as it has a proper story which family audiences can relate to easily. And as master said the characters are all Hindi actors and if they dub it will make a proper movie.

The basic question here is why 83 in week THREE could not collect as much as Pushpa (Hindi) in week FOUR when playing alongside each other and the answer is very simple which is GOOD cinema v BAD cinema and again it takes no Einstein to figure out which is which. Word of mouth can still make a film work in a big way even in these conditions like it can be seen with Pushpa (Hindi) but when word of mouth is very poor like 83 then a crash in inevitable and that is what has happened.

You do not need a trade expert to tell you not to compare two films that are so different in genres. But tough explaining that to self-proclaimed Indian box office experts who are comparing a sports biopic to a mass action ‘entertainer’. It’s high time we have a better box office site that offers mature, detailed analysis and kick this crap out of business.

Btw why are BOI offering endless analysis and keep reiterating every second day what a big disaster 83 is! They are only highlighting its importance. It might not have been a commercial success but it’s a tough film to ignore. It’s being talked about more and appreciated more by people who matter, and maybe that’s something that their pea-sized, regressive mind is unable to digest.

Difference between Dev and Salman is that Dev mainly worked in films made by himself. Salman has luxury of working with other makers, he just need to ensure there’s a a story and than salman is part of it instead of here’s salman, now build a story around it.

When Bollywood churns out crap like SJ2 as its version of masala cinema, Bunty aur Babli 2 as its form of escapist entertainent, and that’s the current standard almost every week, then Pushpa looks like a masterpiece at masala cinema in there.

Niche films like 83 may understandably find it hard to get an audience at times, but Bollywood’s ideas of masala, entertainment and content are so devoid of quality. I find myself watching any alternative cinema these days when it comes to new releases.

Hindi version alone seems to be driving Pushpa’s collections, thanks to the lack of content and questionable taste and sensibilities of the B/C center audiences across the board. The film has been rejected by its domestic audience in AP/Telangana after a bumper initial and is a complete box office disaster overseas with collections half that of 83 and Sooryavanshi.

There will be many in the industry that will be seeing that even after three weeks of release there is a refusal to believe in the failure of 83 and a different agenda is driven and excuses are given as to why the audience could not watch despite it being a great film. It is a ridiculous thought when the film has crashed while others playing alongside have not but this industry only needs a chance to create fake perception.

The only thing probably not being said by the people involved in 83 is that they have made a better film than Pushpa – The Rise and Spiderman – No Way Home and however funny it may sound the thought is probably there. Why not just come out and say that Kabir Khan directed 83 better than Jon Watts has directed Spiderman – No Way Home and Ranveer Singh mimicry is a better act than Allu Arjun in Pushpa. This is not to say Arjun Allu is bigger star than Ranveer Singh but just comparing the work in these two films released in a similar period.

Abdullah, a film with him as a supporting role opened hugely in the USSR. Mithun, afaik, never followed up Disco Dancer.

Having said that at least in US, not many know about Indian (or Bollywood ) movies. If they know they more likely it is SRK. Is it a significant population, I don’t think so; Otherwise they would be releasing Indian movies widely. They still release Indian movies in pockets where you have Indian population. Europe, I don’t know, but if you have fan following like Tom Cruise, I expect at least some fraction of Tom Cruise movie gross.

ps – CSR asked me if I am Indian and divulge those facts…I was curious to ask where she originally from..she sidestepped the question, I think they are not allowed to reveal their own identity.

It will be pockets in certain cities maximum. Whereas in UK, you go to practically any cinema in suburbs of London and an Indian film will be showing. The market in Europe is driven by NRI and majority UK. I rarely see anyone but NRI in cinema for any Indian film in entire lifetime.

That’s a crap load of films which were successful and even something like Karz, which was not, it became a cult film.

Pushpa seems to be Omicron and Covid proof in India’s mass pockets and B/C centers since majority of its audience is used to living their lives with far deadlier diseases like TB, HIV and Dengue in their ecosystem. A mild version of the current pandemic could hardly be a reason for them to prevent their daily activities. Despite that, the global collections of the 200 Cr budgeted film are going to remain under ₹ 350 Cr in all versions included which is lower than the global gross of solo Hindi films like Kabir Singh & Uri. Pushpa at best is an Average fare for its investors.

      • No, there is no guarantee that LSC will be a success. Or that KGF2 wont be a bigger hit than it. At the same time, there is also no reason to delay LSC any further, if the post production will be complete in scheduled time and the film will be ready for release by Apr 14. If Bollywood makers move away from lucrative release dates because of competition from south releases, then they will have no good release windows for themselves at all. Be it Holi, Diwali or Christmas.

Spiderman and Pushpa both released on the same date. Together they did 300+ cr nett at Indian box office and both are big hits. No reason why the results cant be similar for the Holi clash (Bachchan Pandey vs RRR) or the Baisakhi clash (LSC vs KGF2). Simultaneous releases can survive together if both are well made and cater to respective audiences.

Yes, there has been a flop in 83 despite it being a decent film (as per reports, I have not seen it yet). That is more because of an astoundingly high budget and the movie being endorsed by only a part of its target audience. This does not mean all well made films will fail in future.

As for LSC, the budget is nowhere near to 83. It Aamir’s home production and he will be taking his remuneration as a % of profits (like in Secret Superstar). Without his acting fees, the budget is somewhere around 100 cr only. It will need Sooryavanshi/Spiderman level of acceptance to get a Hit/Superhit tag, say 200 cr or so. Its possible to do that even considering the pandemic effects and competition from KGF, provided the movie turns out to be good. Having spent 4 years in making, it will be shocking if AKP comes up with a poor film in LSC. And its been envisioned like a film for all (PK/Dangal), rather than for only elite metro audience.

As for Aamir, he perhaps needs a blockbuster (300 cr or 400 cr) after his disappointing run since Dangal for six long years. Secret Superstar was a minor hit in India and was perhaps could have done better without a high-pitched Diwali release and having been pitted against Golmaal Again. Thugs was an embarrassing flop. Aamir has not had a high in India since Dangal, and again LSC is unlikely to be that long awaited ‘high’ moment for him or his fans. Even if it comes solo, it wont be doing 400 cr in such trying pandemic times. No film will be doing so this year IMO. There will probably be a few good Hits and Superhits in 2022, but cant foresee a record grosser beating Dangal’s collection.

      • Too many misplaced concerns everywhere about KGF2 hurting LSC. As i said before, Spiderman released with Pushpa and had a great run at the multiplexes all over India. Pushpa doing well predominately in single screens did not hurt Spidey that much. Similarly, LSC can hold its own against KGF in the multiplexes and do well enough. If it gets to a total similar to Spidey’s 210+ cr total, LSC will be a Hit/Superhit as far as economics is concerned. 83 failed due to its limited appeal to the larger plex audience, not because of Pushpa’s success.

KGF 2 is a franchise film driven by the same B/C predominant audience of wastrels driving the success of Pushpa Chameli. Thanks to immense cross migration over the years, there are plenty of these loafers, wastrels and eve teasers residing in A centers to drive KGF 2 in A centers as well (to an extent). So LSC has everything to lose clashing with a (mass entertainer) like KGF 2, especially considering the fact that on trailer KGF 2 seems far better than Pushpa Chameli by the lowbrow street rat standards of current 21st century masala cinema. It might end up being like an 83 vs Pushpa Champak clash giving plenty more orgasms to BOI **Edited**.

I just hope KGF2 does not affect it that much as Pushpa did to 83 and that LSC gets the best run possible.

I am still a bit wary on the idea of clashing with KGF2, though. The first part in hindi started off on a first day of 2cr and finished at nearly 44cr (Taran’s numbers). Very good trending despite releasing alongside Zero and facing Simmba and Uri in the subsequent weeks upon release. It shows a degree of appreciation and the part 2 will be awaited. It was strong in Maharashtra and Gujrat and these are where Hindi films have done well post-pandemic. The All India (all languages) total will be huge, I guess. On paper, this is one film whose all India prospects look quite good, even during these beak times.

Having said all that, I still expect Aamir to deliver something really good and worth the wait. And in the northern territories, t will be a one horse race. But this one may be beyond mere figures.

So it is exactly catering to Pushpa audience. A sequel will be bigger.

Marriage use to be a sub 25 years thing, now it’s more sub 30 years and in many cases post 35 years.

One of my better friends, Irish, realised in her earlier 30s that her egg count was very low (coincidence because same thing happened to her sister so she checked herself out)…she always wanted children so once she found her partner…she knocked out 2 boys in no time. Then they were engaged and still not married.

I have at least 2 cousins who had children post 40 years…this is very common- and why not? Women are increasingly very career focused so all the settling down is happening at least 5 years later.

My best friend since I was 5 years old…only realised she wanted children when she was 37! She had a miscarriage and then had her baby few months back!

Most of these people are from distant Indian background…I guess a combination of factors. People need more time now to set up financially (children are expensive), more career focused, it is more % finding a partner now/less % arranged…every factor adds time into entire process.

            Taking Taran’s classification –
Here Mission Mangal is a blockbuster and several superhits like Toilet, Sooryavanshi, Good Newwz , 2point0, housefull4, several clean hits like Rustom, Kesari, Airlift, Jolly 2, Housefull3….and so on.

Last week he overtook Salman Khan on twitter also. He was already ahead on Insta and FB.

        • Insta, FB and twitter does not define stardom. Its the number of people who pay out of their pockets to watch your films on celluloid that does. This is a similar PR machinery that Srk ran in the late 90s, 00s falsely claiming his overseas dominance (at least he had the numbers to show for it!).

By the logic you’re taking, Rajesh Khanna had 17 consecutive hits from Bandhan to Maryada. Amitabh Bachchan has 17 consecutive hits from Yaraana to Shahenshah and no flops till Jaadugar (so 21). The magnitude of these hits are way different.

      • Akshay Kumar is nowhere near Big B or Rajesh Khanna. Those era are over.

I am not comparing their stardom. Just pointing out to a unique string of Success Akshay is having.

        ++++++++++++++ MAJOR RECORD ++++++++++++

Also in 2021, Akshay Kumar’s 2 theatrical releases (Sooryavanshi and BellBottom) outgrossed total bollywood release of all other star.
        Akshay’s gross – 300 cr+

        All Other stars – 83 + Antim + Tadap + Bunty Bubbly2 + chandigarh + …. = 150+ 60 + 40 + 25 + 40 +.. = 275 cr+

  43. One movie that has defied the pandemic and performed abnormally is Spiderman NWH all over the world. It has done $1.69B till date and that too without China. IF it does manage to get a late China release, its WW gross may well touch $2B !!!

And talking of China, anyone here knows whether LSC is getting a theatrical release in China? Will a satire on India’s major historical events pass China’s propaganda test for foreign releases??

    • If the Covid restrictions get lifted by then, Apr 14 will see 4-way clash with Beast and Fantastic Beasts 3 lined up for release as well. Provided no movie backs off from this date, LSC is being projected to open to 20 cr range on day one.

Bachchan Pandey is likely to open at 25 cr range in a clash vs RRR.

Mar-Apr will be interesting at BO.

    • In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Manish Shah, currently the biggest player in the dubbing industry, speaks about the success of Pushpa: The Rise – Part 01, future plans and also opens up about the YouTube channel of Goldmines Telefilms, currently India’s fourth most subscribed channel with 60 million plus subscribers.

Did you expect Pushpa: The Rise – Part 01’s Hindi version would do so well?

I never expected it’ll be such a huge hit. I was confident it’ll succeed at the box office. Par itni badi hit ho jaayegi, yeh nahi pata tha. It’s all because of luck. The first week collections were Rs. 27.50 crores and in the second week, the film collected around Rs. 20 crores. Usually, if a film collects Rs. 47.50 crores in the first two weeks, the lifetime of such a film is expected to be around Rs. 60 crores. In short, the first two weeks gives you 80-85% of the collections of a film. Pushpa: The Rise – Part 01, however, is a unique case where the collections of the first two weeks are going to be 50% of the lifetime and the balance 50% of the earnings will come from the remaining weeks! This was possible because Jersey, scheduled to be released on December 31, was postponed. In the third week, our film should have earned a maximum of Rs. 10 crores. But thanks to Jersey’s postponement, Pushpa: The Rise – Part 01’s week 3 collections amounted to Rs. 22 crores. Similarly, our fourth week collections should have been Rs. 2.50 crores at the most. But as RRR got pushed ahead, Pushpa: The Rise – Part 01 was able to earn Rs. 12 crores in the fourth week. In short, since no new films were released, we got a clean run. Luck and timing played a crucial role here.

What made you back the Hindi version of Pushpa: The Rise – Part 01’s theatrical release and what made you pick up this film to kickstart your theatrical journey in a big way?

We had released films in the past, but on a smaller level like the Hindi versions of Sarrainodu (2016; starring Allu Arjun), DJ (2017; starring Allu Arjun), Katamarayudu (2018; starring Pawan Kalyan) etc. After the success of KGF (2018), I got a feeling that action films have a huge market. Hence, I felt that we could experiment (and release a dubbed film on a big scale). Also, cinemas were shut since March 2020. Audiences were starved of mass content. Films did release on OTT but none of them was mass action films. Hence, we decided to release the Hindi version of Pushpa: The Rise – Part 01 and our experiment was successful.

      • Candid acknowledgement of how a clear run and no competition given a push to the collections.
One would never hear such acknowledgement from producers when a movie like War or Tiger get similar advantage. Its made to look as if released even with competition it would have made the same.

        • Agree 100%, go back to all of my comments from beginning (going back over a decade) and i have always said that multiple holidays, clear run helps collection. If Jersey had released, 83 would have stopped collecting immediately and it would have impacted Pushpa collection by at least 30% week to week.

If Samosa is the only item on the menu, guess what will sell, SAMOSA.
Now put Pakora on the menu too and there will be people who will eat pakora, which will take away business of Samosa…

        • Of samosa’s the only item on the menu and the samosa’s stale, the restaurant shuts shop. The samosa needs to be spicy and well cooked for it to be appreciated, be it War, Dangal, 83 or Pushpa chameli. Basic elementary concept..

Despite major obstacles including night curfew, 50% occupancy, and closure of single screens and multiplexes across select major centers, ‘83’ has successfully managed to hit the ball out of the park by raking in impressive numbers at the global box office.

Kabir Khan says, “The kind of love and appreciation that the movie has received from the people across the globe is truly heart-warming and flattering. Wherever there are no Covid-19 related restrictions and theatres functioning properly with full seating capacity, the film has performed brilliantly in those markets. And that’s a sheer indication of the fact that the film has been hugely appreciated by the audience, worldwide.“
