We havent moved on from AB’s films and box office clout, have we ?

Every week there is some new film or web series in world cinema that pushes the boundaries and defies the norms. And here we are, still trying to convince some unseen virtual user, week upon week, of the box office status of 50 year old films ad nauseam.

Agree, there are so many different options now.

“box office status of 50 year old films”

I don’t think anyone questioned status of 50 year old film, unless you can show me a post where someone questioned it.

My position has always been around let’s not treat last 25 years same as first 25 years (more like first 15 years). you can’t possibly have 40 FLOPS/DISASTERS in last 23 years and make it sound like it’s same as 1973 to 1985. ironically, Marcus list above proves my point. Do you see 40 FLOPS/DISASTERS in that list?

And this was never about AB vs SRK, it’s just bachchan fans gets very defensive and wants to present it that way.

But this will be my last comment on it because i do agree with you and bob cristo that you can’t change someones opinion.

Its obviously nowhere near megastar proportions of his hey day but claims of him having zero box office pull (as claimed by lafangas with the same Zilch surname) between 2000-05 or even inthe 2010s are completely false. He was the star of the year in 2005 and his record from 2000-19 in terms of Hit and success ratio is almost the same as the likes of Akshay and Ajay through their careers. And far better than second rung stars like Shahid and John.

      • The list was provided in a hope to open your blind eyes on the length and breadth of AB’s box office records in his prime, to that you can stop asking silly questions about his last Blockbuster like a broken record.

In the first phase of AB’s career, starting from his first hit in Anand to the early nineties before he took a break from acting, he had delivered 50 hits (counting the semi-hits).

Yes, its as many as 50 hits!

In comparison, today’s superstars like SRK has 30 hits & Salman has 35 hits (counting the semi-hits) so far. Together, these 2 celebrated Superstars in 3 decades have delivered total number of hits which less than AB’s lifetime hit count of 69 so far. Unless one is just dumb, these 2 together cant be counted close to AB’s stature yet.

So stop comparing your puny stars like Srk with a megastar like AB and then the likes of Bob/Tony can freely discuss the mind-bending films releasing every week that are pusing boundaries globally.

Its a different issue that pushing boundaries in SS often means discussions on members starting to look like bollywood actors or certain members getting more marraige proposals in their heyday than the number of love letters that Srk has recieved in his lifetime … and other such nonsensical drivel.

        • Amitabh is at another level and that just cannot be denied. As a kid, I remember watching the same Amitabh movies tens of times rather than watching something I had never seen with a different actor. Lost count of the number of times I watched Satte Pe Satta.

But now the times have changed – let’s say Amitabh was reborn with the same talent, charisma etc. Even he would not be able to attain the same level of success in current times.

When Amitabh made a comeback in the 90s, he was lost for the most part – the angry man films were passe, the directors sucked etc. The fact that he was able to pivot and still deliver hits in a wide variety of films is a testament to his talent and superiority in every way.

But I just don’t think his success can be replicated even by him in today’s world due to a no of factors. Just like it’s impossible to have another NBA player with stats like Wilt Chamberlain.

He is still far superior to any of the 80s and 90s stars, but even SRK, Salman and Aamir would be seen in retrospect as major superstars especially if you compare to the weak stardom today.

          Liked by 1 person

        • I think its best to compare stars of the same era only. AB was way above any and every star in business in the seventies and eighties. That says something.

Since nineties no one star has been able to dominate the proceedings to that extent for even a decade. The Khans were emerging forces in the nineties. SRK had a good dominant period in the early 00s (marked by Salman’s decline and Aamir’s absence) and Salman had a good run for some years after 2010 (marked with Srk’s decline).

If we had a superstar of AB’s stature in these times, i think he would have achieved a lot more success than what SRK or Salman has. Whether he would have achieved the combined success of SRK and Salman alone is perhaps a debatable question. But i would say that he would have at least delivered 50% more than what SRK or Salman had done individually. That isnt much considering Srk/Salman on average has delivered only 1 hit per year over a period of 30-35 years.

However, the star system has been constantly on decline and looking at what the likes of Ranbir/Ranveer have achieved after being around for a considerable time now – Srk/Salman are deservedly considered as major Superstars compared to them.

In the end, everything is relative and contextual. More so, when the star culture has continuously been on a decline over decades due to various reasons.

Films like War and Pathaan have proved that the star culture is still a force in Indian cinema. Its the film makers who failed to extract the best out of the lot and maximize their potential due to their obsession with gentry and urban/NRI cinema. When folks who made KKHH & DDLJ in the 90s degrade to making SOTY, ADHM and Befikre in the 2010s, you know there’s something wrong with the lot of writers and film makers in Hindi cinema over the last 2 decades. Southern cinema on the contrary has stuck to its roots and has its star dominated system (coupled with smart franchising of late) very much in place. With the kind of line up Prabhas and even HR have right now there’s no reason to believe the star system is on the decline. The lack of genuine writers & makers who understand mass sentiments coupled with modern day superstars hardly doing more than a film a year has impacted the Hindi film industry in multiple ways over the last few years.

        • Vijay Shivaay Says:

@Henry : A large part of ABs (as well as Dharmendra’s) success was due to the luxury of writers like Salim Javed & Kader Khan along with film makers like Mehra, Yash Chopra, Sippy and Desai at their disposal. Along with their tireless work ethics which didn’t stop them from doing 4-5 films a year. If any of the modern day (or even future) stars can combine these factors, there’s no reason why they cannot hit the heights of the likes of Dharam and Jeetendra (AB is a different once in a gen beast).

          Like

        • The way Bollywood industry works now, its not possible for superstars to have more than 2 releases in a year even for those following better work ethics. Prabhas is achieving that now, while a more lazy star like Hrithik will at best have one release a year. Srk is struggling to release 3 films in 2023. Salman did have 2 releases a year after Dabangg happened in 2010; but he could get the movies working only for a few years and ran out of steam by 2016.

Practically speaking the best case scenario for a superstar is to deliver 2 big hits a year. Gone are those days of seventies when AB was on average delivering 3 big hits a year. That kind of success is impossible now.

And he isnt a director who moves from project to project in quick time. After Dunki’s release he will take 2-3 years to finalize the script for his next. And his next wont release before 2028-29. So even IF he makes a sequel to 3I, it wont be Aamir’s comeback film unless he is taking an extended break of 5-6 years of doing nothing in the meantime.

Personally, i think they shud leave that movie alone and not ruin it with a sequel, just for the sake of creating an opening day record at box office.

Anyways, there is only one film i think he should not have rejected and that is Gowariker’s Swades.

Aamir is better off working in smaller films with the likes of Shoojit Sircar from here. He’d be a complete misfit for a spy universe or a Rajamouli brand of film.

    • It is your misconcieved idea. Guyz like Adi Chopra, Rakesh Roshan, Rajamouli, Shankar, etc. know the commercial cinema they make inside out. Directors like them wont have or are approaching Aamir to star in their films unless they measure him as a big commercial star who fits well into their kind of cinema. Aamir has time and again shown that he can pull off commercial cinema as well as more sensible stuff.

As for the future, no so-called big star of current times can remain relevant based on content oriented films. Be it SRK or Aamir or Ayushmann or Akshay. Such films wont fill bums in theaters anymore after the rise of OTT during the pandemic. MrsChatterjeeVsNorway is trending well at low levels to be considered an accepted film, but will hardly cross 25 cr total in India. Such is the state of small films from bollywood in current times.

Aamir has confirmed nothing yet, but he is rumored to be currently in talks with YRF’s Spyverse, Rajamouli, Hirani, Shankar, Bhansali, Prashanth Neel and Zoya Akhtar for his next. Whatever and whenever he eventually selects his next, it wont be any small film for sure.

Shoojit can make another small film with AB while there is still time. Buts its likely that success of big films like Ganapath, Project K, Brahmastra 2, etc. will only be adding to AB’s success list now to cross that magic figure of 100, IF it happens.

AB isnt keeping well these days and wont be doing much after having crossed 80 for sure.

The only mainstream commercially viable film he pulled off convincingly was Ghajini. Dhoom 3 despite being a Blockbuster (thanks to its franchise value and 6 open weeks) was easily the weakest and most unconvincing film in the franchise and Aamir’s act was not cut out for that role. A fact that was proved with TOHs abject rejection despite that film being far better off than some of Salman’s rubbish super hits like Bodyguard and Kick. Right now he’s only cut out for content based films with the likes of Hirani, Nitesh Tiwari etc as he’d be a complete misfit in the spy films and does not possess the pretty boy looks of his QSQT and RH days

      • As i said, Aamir is in talks with all the directors i mentioned before. All these directors are yet to finalize their scripts for their next production. So nothing can be confirmed as of now. And Aamir is always extremely choosy and will probably do one or two out of these offers.

But what gets finalized and what gets shelved is not the question here. Rajamouli had previously approached Aamir for his planned Magadheera remake which eventually was shelved. Shankar had approached Aamir for Rajni’s role in 2.0 when Rajni wasnt keeping well. aamir had declined. Adi Chopra went for Aamir for D3 and that movie was ATB (which doesnt happen unless the lead was accepted by general masses even if you personally did not like it). Rakesh Roshan has himself admitted in this interview that he had approached Aamir for Karan Arjun but dates did not work out.

These are all hardcore commercial masala film-makers of our times and they had all approached Aamir previously and are still talking to him about their next. THAT does not happen if they dont deemed him as a superstar who fits the bill in what they do. I will (and many will) take their judgements over your opinion of Aamir.

YRF has not dropped Master with Aamir as of now. They have not even announced War 2 officially yet. Master will happen after War 2. And War 2 would not be announced before Tiger 3 releases. There is a time for everything, nothing will be confirmed for anyone’s whims.

      • Great Bong on this snooze fest:-

What you could expect is fun. And for me, that is where Pathaan fails. It is dreadfully boring, and this is someone who does not have particularly high standards, in that I consider Tiranga a classic, where Raj Kumar pulls out the fuse conductor, an impossibility of physics which both conducts as well as prevents it (the fuse part) and even found “War”, part of the same universe, entertaining.
One reason is the terrible special effects. For something this big budget, and not shy of pulling action set pieces from other movies, one just expected better. Some of the “fighting on train tops” and “heist scenes” and “missile firing” had such a Malegaon-effect vibe to be positively embarrassing, especially since you could see the original inspiration in your mind’s eye. As an example, Salman Khan seemed to be cut-pasted from the sets of Big Boss onto the roof of a train, and the way he and Shahrukh Khan hold Gatlin guns and operate them like electric toothbrushes, at least required quite a bit more in terms of digital believability.
The story lacks the minimum of coherence in a genre where expectations of originality are never high. Character development is as brief as a Yousuf Pathan innings, the villains helpfully explain their schemes before they execute them, and the twists can be seen a mile away. John Ab-Reham-Karo, in true signature style, drains his character of any menace or relatability, a six-packed void of emotion, charm and character, like the universe before the Big Bang, and is at the core of Pathaan’s “webex at 7 am in the morning” excitement quotient. Deepika Padukone has many scenes, but aside from her dance moves in “Besharam Rang” where she simulates peristalsis of the intestine, leaves very little impact on the narrative, much less, for instance, than her appearance in anti-CAA protests in JNU

I understand someone disliking the film; its mostly a no-brainer. But one needs to understand the intentions of the filmmaker. Did he want to present it as meaningless popcorn entertainment or as pathbreaking cinema? It’s also the question of the expectations one has as a viewer.

The where-they’re-coming-from POV is important at least for me when I’m judging cinema. Which is why I enjoy an Everything Everywhere All At Once as much as a Tu Jhoothi Mai Makkaar. When there’s dishonesty in filmmaking , the discomfort shows on screen a la Brahmastra and LSC.

I didn’t mind Pathaan — they ticked all boxes of commercial entertainment. Yes one may argue it had several flaws from a story perspective and that it fails in the VFX department too. But it was a well edited film, fast paced film.

Regarding collections, maybe the ultimate gross was reported a few crores higher. But I have no doubt it did really well, and this fake collections narrative has exhausted its welcome. My cousins watched it in a Delhi theatre in the sixth week and it was still 50% full. One can talk about its overseas collections as a reference point — except China where it didn’t release, the film has set new highs in the Gulf, US and UK. Maybe its vendetta viewing, maybe it was watched by a certain community more than the others, but the result was there to see. Even if YRF and SRK have BOI as their lapdog, boxofficemojo isn’t that easy to buy out, is it?

Whether we like it or not, the film for all its merits or demerits would have grossed far, far lower minus SRK

        • It fails as a popcorn entertainer in most departments as well barring the songs and a larger than life villain. Regarding box office, we’ve seen how well even mediocre films belonging to a certain franchise can perform once the brand name is attached (some recent marvel films, our very own obnoxious Dhoom 3, even Krish 3 and BB2 were far inferior to their prequels). Attaching the YRF spy universe franchise name before Pathaan’s release was YRFs masterstroke. The collections would have been down by 50% flat without the franchise branding and Salman’s cameo as Tiger. Obviously the religious affiliations of a certain section of the audience cannot be ignored whether one likes or not. I can safely say even if its a superior film within the same franchise, War 2 would collect 20% lower than Pathaan & Tiger 3 unless one of these Khans get an extended cameo.

        • Lol, people still crying over imaginary fake collections of Pathaan. How can it do $17.5 million(beating previous record of $12 million) in USA and £4.2 million (beating previous record of £2.7) in UK. If these are real collections, then compartively Indian collections are on par and exactly beating previous records of Bollywood by 25-30% over (beating Dangal’s 375 to Pathaan’s 520 crores).

And don’t get me started on likes and tastes, I’ve seen horrible films being praised just coz it suits their agendas. You can’t fool millions of folks and especially I can vouch that SRK’S highest grosser in USA was Chennai around $7.5 million and it broke by doing 2.5 times of it. Again, similar when compared to India’s collections.

With better VFX and some more elevation moments it would have been a far better film.
          Time to move on anyways.
A bit concerned on Jawaan and SRKs tendency to insert every guy whose available in special appearance. He does this in every movie he produces (OSO, Ra-1) as if he doesnt have enough trust in the product. Hope he does away with this gimmickry

SRKs popularity among obtuse American/British Indians (who love his imbecile karwa chauth brand of cinema) is well known, so no reason why a junk film like Pathaan cannot break records among these clowns. Any halfwitted middle aged SRK fanatic whose attenpting to deny the franchise value or Tiger’s cameo impact to the film’s “domestic” collection is obviously either completely delusional or paying a tribute to his messiah from My name is Kkkkk Khan… (I might not be a terrorist but definitely their empathiser and a doting hubby & daddy kins to druggies).

        • The real reason for success for Pathaan is the 2nd half. Almost all of Srk’s movies and big movies from last decade suffers from dreaded 2nd half. Here in Pathaan, the 2nd half just flies and very fast paced and action after action with just scenes but dramatic ones. Once 2nd half is great, nothing could have stopped this movie. It’s also highly repeat worthy. I had issues with 2nd half even in War but here it just flows.

Btw, WAR 2 will probably have extended cameos by both Salman and Srk. And John Abraham may be brought back from the dead. Its likely to be the huge multistarrer of 2025, directed by Sid Anand post Fighter.

        • Nope, very far ahead of D3. Dhoom 3 wasn’t that likes and it had enough cracks and everyone expected 300 crores but it fell short. Pathaan didn’t have cracks in respect of reviews or audience response. Only here I see unnecessary negative feedback but by and large its positive everywhere and even for some worthy critics. The worst is its average popcorn flick but no way it has negative reactions like Dhoom 3 or Happpy Nee Year inspite being hits.

Fans did not want Aamir’s association with YRF after D3 because of that. Srk has no such standards when it comes to filmography and does not face such issue. I hear fans actually want Srk in another Dhoom or Don or Pathaan! LOL

Sid Anand had delivered War which was a decent blockbuster. YRF wanting him for WAR 2 is not a big surprise. Even Acharya got Thugs after D3. That proves nothing on the aaceptance part. Let Sid deliver a big budget turkey for YRF like TOH and then lets see if he is given another tentpole or not.

Farhan Akhtar took fancy to acting career and left after Don2 but if it was another director, they would have made Don 3 by now. The demand is not recent from last decade.Dhoom is dead franchise now as leading men, Abhishek and Uday Chopra are done. Based on some of the scenes from trailer, i think too many changes are made to the original. Devgun added religious angle as well as i don’t remember any romantic angle/song in the original.

I thought Bhola would do 60% of Pathaan first weekend/week and the final number, but doesn’t look like it. So much for those who wanted to and continues to paint picture of making Pathaan looks like it was just at a level of Dhoom 3, Sultan, bajrangi bhaijan…

I think promotion was fine with Bhola.

Like how SRK did with Soccer/Football, Devgun did it with Cricket.
Like how SRK did with #AskSRK, Devgun did it too.
The trailer was liked by all for most part.

And yes Pathaan’s admits are just about the same as Sultan despite the latter not being part of some weird universe of wrestlers and not having any hooting cameos from superstars far more popular among the desi masses than SRK. I’m yet to come across anyone barring SRK fan girls of the 90s (like my own spouse and cousins unfortunately) to have genuinely liked Pathan or even find it tolerable. That Salman brought out his own huge fanbase among the muslim masses in his Tiger avatar and added 20% to the tally is obviously anyone’s guess, a fact that Rukh fans wouldn’t confess since they cannot accept the criminal’s higher popularity than their own messiah.

        • I am not too hopeful of Bholaa. The teasers and trailers seem to indicate a dark film, and it doesnt even look like a film that will cut across audiences. And its just not Vikram Vedha’s failure, everything from Jersey to Shehzada has been flopping left and right. In such circumstances if Bholaa opens at 15 cr & manages to do 200+ cr, it will be a big deal. Devgn anyways has a poor record at box office for his own directorials.

Drishyam 2’s superhit success was mainly because they delivered a good film that was a franchise sequel. It was not that Devgn has become a bonafide star after Golmaals, Singhams and Tanhaji. Maidaan is also unlikely to open at anything more than 10-15 cr.

Salman on the other hand is coming on Eid with his lowbrow masala after a few years. It will be interesting to see how that one opens and whether Salman is still a big draw on Eid with his mediocre films. Tiger 3 is bound to open v well due to its franchise and sequel value. But KKBKKJ will be interesting.

          Like

        • By bonafide star i meant Superstars like today’s big 4. You just cant expect a Devgn film to have bumper record openings even if the trailer is liked. I found its trailers Ok, but not deserving the media hype it got. Action or background song doesnt mean a good trailer. Pathaan trailers were impressive, which helped a lot in the record opening combined with SRK’s absence from the scene for few years. Bholaa’s hype was mainly because it was coming after Drishyam 2 and Devgn’s goodwill spreading across the media.

Anyways, I dont care much if Bholaa opens at 10 cr or 15 cr. If it is a good movie, it will trend well to get to a decent total and will be declared Hit. Maybe not a Superhit like Drishyam (240 cr), but this can do 175 cr and be a clean hit.

        • Historic initials are now reserved for sequels or superstars in larger than life roles alone. Even national holidays do not make much of a difference like before. And yet we have a few brilliant minds questioning ABs stardom when the chap gave historic openings from regular films like Hindustan ki Kasam, BMCM and Kaante when he was well past his prime.

          Liked by 1 person

        • Forget historic openings, these days all movies are opening to 10-15 cr range more or less. Not even 20-25 cr.

Devgn has a good chance of getting a bumper opening with Singham 3 in 2024. It has everything in place – top heroine, franchise sequel value, cameos from Akshay & Ranveer, reputed director, etc etc. It needs to come solo on a holiday and maybe it can create a record initial for Devgn. I dont think any of Devgn’s films has ever set opening day record apart from HKK which was a AB vehicle.

Akshay has once set opening day record with SIK in his heyday.

SRK and Priyanka Chopra’s alleged ‘Nikah’.

In fact, in 2012, Shah Rukh Khan had invited Priyanka Chopra to Karan s birthday bash even when the latter was not on good terms with PeeCee. He even went to receive the actress and as soon as she arrived, SRK landed a kiss on her cheeks which created a huge buzz.
After this, SRK’s wife Gauri Khan was quite upset with the superstar for his behavior and along with her friend Sussanne Khan and Karan Johar boycotted Priyanka Chopra. She put a ban on SRK working with Priyanka Chopra.

Following Priyanka Chopra’s boycott by Karan, Gauri, and some other members of the film fraternity, rumors were rife that the couple had gotten married in a secret ‘Nikah’ ceremony at midnight in Toronto in 2013. And the two stars went separate ways once back home.
Reportedly, the actress’ father Dr. Ashok Chopra was on his death bed and wanted to see Priyanka Chopra get settled which is when the couple decided to tie the knot in a secret ceremony. Dr. Ashok Chopra passed away on June 10, 2013.

But if YRF wants him to direct both, then they have to delay this Tiger vs Pathaan film. Maybe they will get back Kabir Khan or Ali Abbas to direct for them. I doubt Adi Chopra will himself direct, as some rumors seem to suggest. Considering the big budgets of these films, they cant give directorial responsibilities to anyone.

YRF CEO gave interview and said their focus is Spy Universe now and nothing about Dhoom which is dead brand now as it needs full revamp as Uday and Abhishek won’t be doing it. Regarding the director, Sid Anand or Aditya Chopra will prefer Sid to direct T/P instead of War 2. As the template is set, any new director can direct War2 as SA is more bigger role of creating franchises than directing sequels. T/P is still unique on its own and just not another sequel.
