Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet presented by Danny Boyle?

LINK

According to the grapevine, Oscar winning director Danny Boyle is all set to present a film directed by Anurag Kayshap. The two grew close since the time Danny introduced a new camera to Kayshap for his last film Dev D.

A source in the industry reveals, “Kayshap has had a dream project ready since the time he was working on No Smoking. Called Bombay Velvet, this multistarrer once had John Abraham cast in the lead role.

Now, there is a strong buzz that Anurag is in talks with Aamir Khan to play the lead in his period flick set in the early 1940s in Mumbai (then Bombay).” The source further adds, “Kayshap had run the idea of this film through Boyle when he was down in Mumbai promoting his multi-Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire last year.

He has since agreed to simply present the film so that the movie gets a far better chance in the international market. Aamir, on the other hand, has apparently heard the script but is still to give his elusive nod to the project. He will be surely tempted to say yes now as the film is going to be presented by Boyle.”

A spokesperson for Aamir says the actor has not been approached for the project yet.

  3. Who’s afraid of Raj Thackeray?

Despite Raj Thackeray’s diktat, Anurag Kashyap won’t change his title from Bombay Velvet to Mumbai Velvet

Karan Johar may have apologised to Raj Thackeray on behalf of the characters in his production Wake Up Sid who dared to call Mumbai by its old name.

But Anurag Kashyap has no apologies to offer for the title Bombay Velvet for one part of the feature film on Mumbai that he proposes to make next year.

Says Anurag, “I won’t call it Mumbai Velvet. Bombay Velvet is set in a time when Raj Thackeray wasn’t even born. There’s no logic to it. It was called Bombay then.”

    Anurag Kashyap
Whether MNS buys that logic or not, it remains to be seen. But Anurag is adamant he won’t surrender to any pressure to change the title. “If MNS becomes unreasonable, we’ll resort to a legal recourse.”

Bombay Velvet will be part of Kashyap’s Mumbai trilogy.

“The other two parts don’t have titles yet,” says Anurag. “But there’s plenty of time. I don’t see the Mumbai trilogy happening until the middle of next year. My writer Gyan Prakash is a scholar from Patna. He has been researching intensely on the project for two years. See, the Mumbai trilogy is a big budget film.”

The Mumbai trilogy will be produced by TV18. John Abraham will star in one part of the trilogy while Aamir Khan is likely to be cast in the other.

  4. Too busy for Bollywood!

Mumbai: It’s touted as Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle’s Bollywood debut — in association with Anurag Kashyap — and was supposed to go on the floors in a few months. But now After Hrs has learnt that Bombay Velvet has been pushed to almost 2011 since both filmmakers are busy with individual commitments.
    DNA

“Anurag has signed a nine film deal with UTV, one of which starts in December. His own directorial debut is also going on the floors in two months, so he has no time for Bombay Velvet right now. Danny is also involved in four projects, so they have decided to push the project back by a year,” says a source.

On his part, Anurag also confirmed that the project has been delayed. “We are currently finalising the script of the movie and that will take a lot of time. Casting and getting dates from stars will take more time. There will be no news on that front before 2011 — we cannot do the movie next year,” he said, clarifying that Studio 18 is producing the movie, not Danny Boyle.

Despite the delay, the project is keeping its ambition high. Anurag said he’s been exchanging notes with Danny about the script over e-mail and both of them want to cast Aamir in the film. Danny, especially, is keen on Aamir. Some earlier reports had in fact claimed that both Aamir and Shah Rukh Khan might be in the movie together, which is set in 1940s Mumbai and based on real incidents.

“We have not approached Shah Rukh, so the question of him being in the movie doesn’t arise. We’re looking at roping in Aamir Khan for the role and everyone knows he doesn’t say yes to any movie until the producers are in place and there’s a bound script. Danny is quite keen to cast him,” said Anurag.

  5. Iamthat;

It’s Aamir Khan over Shah Rukh Khan for Danny Boyle’s next:

Mumbai: Some time ago reports claimed that industry rivals actors Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan were about to come together for Anurag Kashyap and Danny Boyle’s forthcoming movie Bombay Velvet. However, the reality now is something very different.

It is known that Shah Rukh was approached by Danny for Slumdog Millionaire for the role which was eventually played by Anil Kapoor. It had been speculated that because he turned down the offer citing professional reasons, his relationship with Danny went sour. Later on it was said that Shah Rukh and Danny had patched up and were constantly in touch with each other. But now we’ve learnt that that this time around for Bombay Velvet Shah Rukh has not even been approached because both Danny and Anurag want to have Aamir as the solo lead.

“All that you have read about Bombay Velvet is completely false. Danny and my eyes are fixed on Aamir and no one else. I’m certain that Aamir will love the script and would want to come on board. If Aamir does not take up the offer, we will look for someone else, but we are definitely not looking at Shah Rukh for this movie. We both feel Aamir is the best guy. We have not even thought about a back-up because we are hoping that we will be able to get Aamir,” says Anurag.

Anurag has been busy for over 10 months now going back and forth with the script of his movie. He adds, “The script is finally locked and it’s turned out different and nice. We begin casting as soon as we have the lead in place. We feel Aamir has the intensity and the depth to shoulder the movie all alone. Shah Rukh is a nice actor but this film is tailor-made for Aamir. We are narrating the film to Aamir in a couple of weeks. Danny won’t be able to come down for it but is looking forward to Aamir’s response.”

Rumour also has it that Danny is currently looking at going solo with the film that already has Studio 18 on board as producers. However, no clarifications could be got from Anurag to validate this rumour.

  7. Anurag’s ‘Bombay Velvet’ to roll soon

It has been more than one-and-half years since film-maker Anurag Kashyap announced the making of his new film titled Bombay Velvet. There was also news that he had roped in an impressive star cast including John Abraham, Naseeruddin Shah and Kay Kay Menon. However, according to Anurag, the film has yet not gone on the floor.

Bombay Velvet will be based on Mumbai Fables, a book written by author Gyan Prakash, who is a professor of History at Princeton University and has served as the director of the Shelby Cullom Davis Centre for Historical Studies from 2003 to 2008. The book traces the remarkable cultural history of Mumbai as one of the most important metropolises in the world.

At an event last night to release Mumbai Fables in the city, Anurag said that he would start work on the film soon. He said, “While Prakash was writing his book, he was simultaneously writing the script for the film. It is always a painful wait for a film to take off. But now that the book will come out (in the market), we will start work soon.” He added, “After meeting the author and learning about his book, I dug deep into how this city (Mumbai) became a metropolis.”

  9. ‘I have waited long enough for Aamir’
By: Divya Unny Date: 2011-07-18 Place: Mumbai

After delaying his dream project for over a year, Anurag Kashyap has now decided to go ahead with it minus the actor

This time last year, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap was celebrating the success of his home production Udaan.

Exactly a year later, however, Kashyap’s flight of fancy has been cut short. Bombay Velvet, his dream project and clearly his most ambitious film till date that was supposed to star Aamir Khan, will now be made without the superstar.

Sadly, after a year long wait, the filmmaker has given up on the one face that would have been the strongest selling point of the film.

“I am going ahead with Bombay Velvet without Aamir. He is a very busy man and I have waited long enough. I don’t even know if he wants to do the film,” says the director.

Interestingly, it was Anurag himself who had once declared that if Aamir wasn’t on board, he would much rather not make the film.

The book that inspired Bombay Velvet

But now that Bombay Velvet, which was conceived some years ago, has been stuck in a limbo for a while, the filmmaker has decided to go ahead with it sans the actor.

Apart from the star cast, film’s budget has also been a major cause for concern.

    About the film
The film, set in the 60’s is an adaptation of Gyan Prakash’s book Mumbai Fables that encapsulates the city’s literary and architectural history.

The film therefore aims to re-create the city that was, a good five decades ago.

“There is every chance that the audience would see the queen’s necklace with an absolutely clear skyline, minus all the skyscrapers,” adds the director.

With the estimated budget of the sets alone expected to be between R 15-17 crores, this would be Anurag’s most expensive venture yet.

And if Aamir was on board, the budget would definitely double if not less. “Studio 18 is producing the film and money is not an issue here,” Kashyap is quick to clarify.

The director, who is busy with Gangs of Wasseypur and That Girl in the Yellow Boots, is expected to announce the final starcast of Bombay Velvet very soon.

For now, John Abraham, Naseeruddin Shah and Kay Kay Menon are part of the project that will go on floors in 2012.

    Kashyap vs Khans

2009- Buzz was that there was a misunderstanding between Anurag and Shahrukh Khan. Apparently, SRK was keen to be a part of Bombay Velvet but, according to Anurag, he was not fit for the role.

2011- Post the success of Dabangg, Anurag lashed out at Salman Khan on twitter claiming that his brother Abhinav Kashyap was ousted from the Dabangg sequel.

2011- At a press conference for his film Shaitaan, Anurag took a dig at the Khans saying he did not need a Khan to promote his film.

Ranveer and Anushka pair up for third film in a row, but continue to claim that they are not ‘together’

She says he isn’t boyfriend material. He says she is too good to be his girlfriend. While the exact status of the Ranveer Singh-Anushska Sharma relationship is still a mystery, the two definitely like each other enough to sign up for their third film together. This duo will star in Anurag Kashyap’s Mumbai-based period epic drama Bombay Velvet set in the 1960s.

“Anushka plays a fiercely independent women in her new releases Ladies Versus Rickie Behl and Yash Chopra’s next with Shah Rukh Khan. She needs a break to prepare herself for a ’60s look in Bombay Velvet,” revealed a source.

But doesn’t Sharma need a break from Singh after two films together, specially since she claims to find him insufferable? Or are they so compatible professionally that she is willing to overlook the problem?

We tried to get a confirmation from Kashyap, who however, chose to remain silent.

“They want to make a big announcement about the film. It’s expected to be the most expensive film of Anurag Kashyap’s career so far. Both Ranveer and Anushka have offered to devote bulk dates to Bombay Velvet , so that Kashyap can capture the flavour of Mumbai in the 1960s without interruption,” explained the source.

    • very disappointing casting.. I was always skeptical that Aamir would do this but Kashyap should have done something more credible than this. I suspect this project wasn’t getting financiers on the usual Kashyap casting choices. He probably couldn’t get major stars one way or the other. And he decided to go with this pair which in Ladies v Ricky Bahl will have another easy success.

Or maybe he will actually be able to get credible performances out of them? We don’t even know what roles they have been cast in!

After all everybody said that Vidya was all wrong for Silk Smitha – and now everybody is agreeing that she has given Hindi cinema one of it’s best performances.

A good enough director can make anybody act- except maybe Nargis Farkhi 😛

    Haha
Well ;people like NF are not there to “act”
And sometimes an amateurish unrehearsed natural “act” is what is needed
    And
C’mon she is not thaaaat bad lol

Reminds me of a professor of mine ;( of Greek origin)
He had a (blonde) Ukrainian “research assistant”
They both were poor in English and couldn’t understand each others language
Her subject knowledge is worse than her English &so wasn’t given much “work” either

Sometimes she asked me in broken English —“what is she there for?”
to which I had no answer (that I could give her)
    Haha

LOL Alex I knew you would chivalrously rush in to defend Nargis 😛 I said that as a joke. Nargis obviously wasn’t hired for her acting skills- but then she should have been given a suitably simple character.

Heer was one of the few female roles in Bollywood where more than just looking glamorous is required- and I felt a real actress was needed for the part. Nargis can do films like Players and Desi Boyz where she will only have to look good in glamorous clothes- more complex parts are wasted on her.

And she WAS that bad- she was horrendous. You guys are being easy on her because you think she looked divine – but this is film is not only made for her fans- all of who do not find her sexy thought she ruined the film.

To me NF is like the Bollywood Rosie Huntington Whiteley. Only Rosie had a shallow undemanding character which was perfect for her- and Nargis’s role actually required her to act.
