Aamir’s profit sharing idea for 3 Idiots
LINK
For the first time in B-Town, the major players in the cast and crew of a film has not taken a single penny as remuneration. The biggies in 3 Idiots are said to be partners in profit. It is learnt that everyone from director Raju Hirani to actors Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor and R Madhavan have not taken any fees for the film. Based on worldwide collections, everyone (including producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra) will pocket an equal share. Aamir, who feels the film will be a blockbuster, is being credited with the idea.
One of the leads, Sharman Joshi refused to be a part of this profit-sharing group. A source reveals, “Sharman was offered a share in the scheme by producer Chopra and Aamir. But he refused to wait that long for the money to come in. He requested the maker to pay him upfront as he was planning to buy a house and needed the cash.”
Big Pictures is picking up the film’s world rights at an astronomical sum. They too will pocket a hefty sum from the exhibition sector.

This is sort of like what the top A list stars(Tom Cruise, Will Smith, etc) do in Hollywood for their movies. The only difference is that the A list stars in Hollywood also get paid a large sum upfront as well as have back end deals to share in the movie’s profits from the box office as well as with the merchandise sold.

Those days are long gone. Stars will be hardpressed to get those kind of deals in todays environment. They are even asked to take paycuts.

Yes, its indeed true that in these dire economic times even A list stars in Hollywood are taking huge pay cuts for their movies. Only the stars who act as well as producer their movies still get the major money.
But I was merely making an analogy of how Aamir’s idea is in line with what began happening with the A list stars in Hollywood many years ago even up until early 2008 before the markets totally collapsed..

I think the film will do very very well, a big one. BUT, probably not broad-based enough to get to a 100 crores or something. In recent years, only Dhoom 2, Om Shanti Om, Rab Ne Banadi Jodi, and Welcome have hit 75 crores or more; let’s add Lage Raho Munnabhai for mind-numbing trending. And of course there’s Ghajini. 3 Idiots doesn’t strike me as broad-based enough to get to 90-100, but I do expect it to do 75+. But, it could get a very big number if it trends like Munnabhai 2 or Rang De Basanti, but that sort of trending surely cannot be counted on…

3 Idiots probably won’t be as ginermous as Ghajini. However 3 Idiots should do vastly well at the box office during the holidays. I’m vastly looking forward to the movie.

and the synopsis has really interested me even more in this film.. I have a weakness for that sort of reflective, inward-looking subject..

I have also noticed that the Indian movie press has recently gone negative about 3 Idiots and have ramped up the tension between Aamir, Hirani, and the cast. There seems to be numerous articles written up about the tug of war between Aamir and Hirani over how the movie is presented to the public. One can’t believe anything or take anything at face value when it comes to the Indian press because they fabricate so many baseless articles. I do inded hope that none of this is remotely true. There is much riding on this movie. It does not need this type of drama or negativity.

This will be a blockbuster for sure. The combination is too bullet proof. At the bare minimum I expect 80Cr.
Sharman will probably regret his decision !

This is clearly the flashback portion the synopsis mentioned. Hope there’s more here, as the three are too seasoned-looking to credibly just play goofballs…

I will just piggyback your comment. I’m also hoping for a much more proper advert that represents the movie. There has to be more to the movie than what this teaser advert has shown.
