I felt so sad seeing the clip of him at Filmfare – it’s heartbreaking to see what can happen to someone with the passing of time. I’m visiting my parents this wknd cos it’s mother’s day in England, and they too couldn’t believe what’s happened to him. He looked really very ill. For some reason I was just expecting an older version of how he looked in his gues appearance in Silsila. It was nice seeing the respect everyone gave him – the way Shabana was holding onto him looked very genuine.

Just recently i saw him with Hema in Abhinetri and that made his current appearance even more striking.

Shammi incidentally looked much healthier than i’d expected!

  5. So what is the answer? Shashi had loads of charm but Rajesh had charisma. Or was there something else?

  6. On my recent visit to India, actually caught a glimpse of Shashi Kapoor at his Prithvi theatre in Bombay. He did look fairly fragile.

  7. Haven’t seen the clip and don’t want to either, I want to remember him for the man who was the perfect foil for AB film after film without a single complaint.

    • I’m with you. I too don’t want to see this clip and remember him as the charming man that he was.
Such a good brother to AB sr.

I think its not just old age, it must be some illness. After all even Dilip Kumar still looks quite healthy and nice, and he must be much older.

I read somewhere VVC showed DK 3 Idiots and he enjoyed it and sang songs with VVC afterwrds 🙂

  8. Am glad Shashi inspires such affection.
It would be unfair to tho just cherish him as AB’s costar in numerous films.
He also was a well mannered, non controversial star and a family man who always put his family first.
One of his biggest gifts was Prithvi theatre and also a bold producer who gave us Junnon, 36 Chowrunghee Lane and such. Ajooba proved to be his undoing. He put on 60 lbs for this stupid film, lost a ton of money and his weight just kept on going up.

    • Valid point Rajen as he was so much more than AB’s foil as he was did produce some top quality movies that rode a fine balance of art and commercial. Right again about Ajooba as I still can’t believe an actor and producer of his calibre would be so inept at directing.

I think it’s kinda rude simply summing up Shashi Kapoor as being AB’s sidekick – though he wouldn’t be in my list of favourites, he was always gave decent performances, and had a real charm about him.

MonaLisa – that’s an odd comment. I’m certainly not a huge AB fan, but ur comment implies that Shashi Kapoor played those roles as some kind of favour to Amitabh, which obviously wasn’t the case! Shashi Kapoor was simply taking the best roles he could get, which unfortunatley were at the time of AB’s peak, so often meant starring alongside him. But it was no altruistic deed!!

  12. What I find quite amazing is that all three Kapoor siblings: Raj, Shammi and Shashi left their own unqiue stamps on bwood, that too in 3 diff decades.
Cant forget the patriarch Prithviraj with his own distinct style either. In the next gen, unfortunately only Rishi made a mark. But then again, the latest gen has had Karishma (who did quite well for herself), Kareena (who somehow survives at the top with all her naataks) and Ranbir, who is on a path upwards.
Truely illustrious filmi family, perhaps the only of its kind in the world which has had a continuous presence for 7 decades in showbiz.
