Ranbir Kapoor will be seen in Anurag Basu’s untitled next in a totally new avatar. Not only will the actor have an extremely unconventional look, but also his character will be deaf and mute. This is the first time; Ranbir would be playing someone with physical challenges.

Because it’s a complex role!
A source from the film reveals that playing such a complex character was one of the reasons he signed up. Describing his character in Basu’s film, the source adds, “It’s a very difficult role. Even though it has shades of humour, the guy Ranbir plays is very complex. During the narration, Ranbir was a bit hesitant, not knowing if he would be able to play a deaf and mute guy, but Basu convinced him otherwise.”

Ranbir will have two leading ladies opposite him, and one of them might be Asin. “Basu is in talks with Asin. It’s a romantic thriller and has an edgy appeal. This would be Ranbir’s most serious and difficult role since his debut.”

  2. Poor Ranbir, Hrithik, AB. They have to manufacture physical challenges for them. SRK comes ready made – if one is short, ugly and stammers, you dont need to add anything.

  3. Priyanka breaks her silence

When a weaker female role in Anurag Basu’s biopic Silence had no takers, Priyanka Chopra opted for it, and sacrificed her coveted role for it

After the Kites debacle, a new turn of events has ruined Anurag Basu’s year. His Kishore Kumar biopic Silence has been put on hold. Apparently, the film needs extensive research, and is no longer financially feasible.

According to a director-friend of Ranbir Kapoor (who was supposed to play Kishore), “Ranbir has stopped talking about the Kishore Kumar biopic. It’s no longer a lucrative project anymore.”

When Anurag decided to focus on his prestigious project Silence, starring Ranbir Kapoor as a deaf and mute hero, he cast Priyanka Chopra to play the role of a mentally challenged girl. Not in his wildest dreams had Anurag expected that this casting will be the root of his problems.

Asin was supposed to play the other female part in the film. When Asin turned that down, Katrina stepped in. But both opted out later. Why? Because by then, both Asin and Katrina had discovered that the part Priyanka had been chosen for was actually a far stronger role.

As a result, this other female part had no takers and this had put the film on hold for six months.

Until Priyanka stepped in. Apparently, Priyanka, who thinks the project is too precious to be endangered, has now volunteered to play the vacant female part (which is believed to be the weaker part), so the more powerful female part would be easier to cast.

At one time Kajol had similarly volunteered to play the other female lead in Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, when every girl in tinsel town had turned down the role Rani Mukerji played.

Says a reliable source, “Silence is too powerful a project to be stalled. Priyanka knows this and is only too happy to do whatever is best for the project. Even if it means swapping roles.” When contacted Anurag Basu said, “It’s true we’ve been unable to cast the other part. We have time. We’ll sort it out.”

  4. deaf mute is such an antiquated and insulting term. Simply stating “deaf” is enough and if the character is culturally Deaf, a capitalized D is required. Why can’t they use Deaf actors to play such roles?

  5. Ileana to star opposite Ranbir in Barfee
    Subhash K Jha, Dec 13, 2010, 12.00am IST

The crucial and much-delayed casting of the second heroine opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Anurag Basu’s Barfee is finally done. It’s Ileana D’Cruz, who starred in Kedi and has been pencilled in for the Shankar’s Tamil remake of 3 idiots, who will play the other female lead opposite Ranbir in Barfee. For a while it was Asin, the original choice for the role who was almost back in the project. Apparently the price factor didn’t work out.

That’s when Anurag Basu, who has an eye for new talent (he discovered Kangna Ranaut), happened to see Ileana’s photographs.

Says a source, “Anurag showed the pictures to Ranbir Kapoor who felt Ileana had the same delicacy and grace as Deepika Padukone. He immediately approved of Ileana. Things were finalised within days. Anurag met Ileana and her mother and explained the role in Barfee and also that Priyanka Chopra plays the other part.”
Interestingly Ileana is the third south Indian actress, after Asin and Deepika, to be offered the same role in Barfee. Ileana is expected to go through rigorous voice and diction coaching before facing the camera.

Says a source, “Since Ranbir plays mute and Priyanka plays a woman often lapsing into incoherence, it is very important that Ileana speak clear and correct Hindi. That was the prerequisite for her.”

  6. Anurag Basu talks about Ranbir’s character in Barfee

    By Subhash K. Jha, April 21, 2011 – 13:05 IST

Anurag Basu, Ranbir Kapoor Anurag Basu recently finished a short but the most challenging portion of his Ranbir Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra-Ileana D’Cruz starrer Barfee. But he isn’t quite heaving a sigh of relief. The real battle of preparing Ranbir for the part of the happy-go-lucky deaf-mute character begins now.

Though Ranbir won’t speak in the film, he will not be entirely mute.

Explains Anurag, “If you’ve interacted with mute people, you’d know they are not entirely quiet. They make these sounds in place of using proper words. And those sounds convey the entire emotional verbal impact of their thought processes. For a normal actor to ‘speak’ in that guttural tone is not easy.”

Anurag won’t resort to a voice-over like Sanjay Leela Bhansali did for Rani Mukerji’s deaf and mute character in Black.

Explains Anurag, “Why must we treat cinema like a radio? Cinema is a visual medium. We don’t need to explain the character’s thoughts if the visuals do what they’re supposed to. The entire onus of conveying his character’s motivations is on Ranbir. Luckily by signing him I signed an actor who didn’t need to be trained from scratch about the behaviour of a deaf-and-mute character.”

Ranbir had learnt sign language during the making of Black where he was an assistant. Says Anurag, “The minute Ranbir heard the script he started talking to me in sign language. So I knew half the battle was won. Now we need to work on creating what Ranbir calls the sounds of silence.”

Ranbir needed time off to master the sound of a mute person. This reprieve to get a grip on the ‘sounds of the mute’ has come to the actor and his director Anurag Basu courtesy Imtiaz Ali who will be shooting a stadium-rock concert song sequence with Ranbir on May 15.

Interestingly, the inspiration for Ranbir in Barfee is Charlie Chaplin who made himself fully comprehensible through his silences in the silent films.

Says Anurag, “I want that kind of a visual impact in Ranbir’s silences where Charlie Chaplin could be understood fully without explanations. Ranbir is working on getting a ‘sound’ quality into his visuals.”

  7. My role in ‘Barfee’ is by far the most challenging: Priyanka
By: IANS Date: 2011-05-11 Place: New Delhi

After creditably essaying seven looks in ‘7 Khoon Maaf’ and 12 different characters in ‘What’s Your Raashee?’, Priyanka Chopra will be seen as a mentally-challenged girl in her upcoming film ‘Barfee’, which she describes as ‘by far the most challenging role’.

‘I have started shooting for the film, have shot nearly five days till now. I must admit that it is quite a difficult task,’ said Priyanka, who was here to unveil the wedding collection by jewellery brand Asmi for the ongoing The Great Indian Wedding Carnival.

‘There is a very thin line between caricature and real. But surely, this role is by far the most challenging that I have come across,’ added the 28-year-old who is reportedly spending time in a mental asylum to get into the skin of the character.

The film is being directed by Anurag Basu and it features Ranbir Kapoor as a deaf and dumb person, while Ileana D’Cruz is set to play a narrator.

  10. Mr Bean inspires Ranbir’s outing in Barfee?

He delivered a heavy-duty performance in Rockstar, and now, Ranbir Kapoor is set to charm audiences with his “romantic-comic” outing in Barfee. Even as Anurag Basu’s film nears completion, word is out that it’s an Indian interpretation of popular British TV comic character, Mr Bean.

“It’s not a direct copy of Mr Bean (played by Rowan Atkinson). But you’ll find the elements of Ranbir’s character a bit similar to him. Anurag and Ranbir have worked very hard on making sure that the film is entertaining and not serious,” says a team member involved with Barfee.

Ranbir too contends that Barfee isn’t a serious film. “People have a lot of misconceptions about Barfee. It’s a romantic comedy set in the ‘70s. And I am playing a Mr Bean kind of a character. It has been very interesting and challenging,” he says, adding, “Anurag has been a wonderful director. And I hope we make an endearing, feel-good film, which family audiences can enjoy.”

The actor plays a deaf and mute person in the film, while Priyanka Chopra will be seen as a mentally challenged girl and Ileana D`Cruz will narrate the story. But Ranbir clarifies that he isn’t copying Mr Bean, Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton.

He says, “I have grown up with these characters. So from the start, they have been deep influences on me. It’s not like I am trying to copy someone, because the character is my own take and personal adaptation. It’s absolutely original and not influenced by any of them.”
