B.O. update: New releases open to poor houses, Hollywood opens better
– By Taran Adarsh, July 29, 2011 – 15:04 IST
The three new releases — BUBBLE GUM, KHAP and GANDHI TO HITLER — have opened to extremely poor response. In fact, the films have had a very limited release at plexes since the earlier releases [ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA, SINGHAM and DELHI BELLY in particular] are attracting ample footfalls. On the other hand, the Hollywood films — COWBOYS & ALIENS and THE SMURFS — have opened much, much better than the Hindi counterparts.
ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA enters third week today, but the film seems the first choice at plexes of metros, while SINGHAM is outstanding at single screens and plexes of several centres.
Singham has had a very good week of 50 crore nett plus as it remained rock steady on weekdays especially in Mumbai and CP Berar. The approx early estimates for the circuits are as follows.
would be fantastic if this happened though I’m not sure of it yet. It would have to double its week 1 and other than Ghajini (and of course 3I) I have not seen any film with that sort of initial do it in this genre or any genre… Rajneeti and G3 probably did this more or less but those had very strong multiplex support). Dabanng fell well below this as did Ready.
On a different note and despite some late defiance by Broad Eng have been whittled away for a score that is very low even by one day standards. It would be a real shame if India couldn’t get something going here. And of course they’ve already lost an opener.
“should have”? Given our struggles to get rid of tailenders (e.g. 3rd test against SA, 2nd innings; last match against England, 2nd innings), I EXPECTED England to make 200 once they were 124/8. Depressing. But I still have a good feeling about this match.
Chennai Box- Office- July 22 to 24

Vikram and his Deivathirumagal continue their hold in its second week over the CBO.
The film has grossed approximately 2.5 Crore in 10 days from Chennai city, what`s is amazing is that the second weekend is as good as the opening weekend!
In the number two positions is Lawrence`s Kanchana, a horror masala movie which is doing better in single screens and is at number two position.
In the third place is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: 2, followed by Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara which is rock steady in multiplexes. In the fifth place is Venghai.
Harry Potter has incidentally done 900m worldwide, the fastest in this sense though it dropped a remarkable 84% in the second weekend in the US. Even the poorest Pirates has never dropped by more than 70%. Really surprised this happened. The reviews were very good. I guess the story is just too dark at this point. Not enough ‘entertainment’ perhaps. I recall the first part of this last book not holding up all that well either though it was better than this.
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Heads For 80 Cr Nett Finish
Saturday 30th July 2011 14.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara has started the third week on a very strong note. The collections are around 1.65 crore nett on its third Friday which is excellent considering the collections last Friday were 2.70 crore nett. The Friday collections were better than Thursday.
The weekend may finish around 6.75 crore nett which means just a 42% drop from last weekend and it would the be after a long time that a big release is showing less than 50% week on week falls.
Zindagi Na Mile Dobara has collected over 63 crore nett in two weeks and the film is heading for 80 crore nett lifetime business.
this has been really stable.. the third weekend is comparatively better than the second which shows a strong base of support within the audience. It’s done superbly in multiplexes.
Singham was rock steady on its second Friday as it collected around 3.75 crore nett. Most circuits were pretty similar to its Thursday collections while the drop from last Friday is around around 55% plus.
The weekend should be very strong and record collections of at least 15 crore nett, they could even get close to 17 crore nett mark if the mass centres jump on Sunday like they did last Sunday.
The film is now a certain Super Hit and should cross the 45 crore distributor share mark as it has an uninterrupted run until the release of Aarakshan on 12th August.
but note the real story here and another ‘instance’ of just how dramatically times have changed. You have a multiplex movie with Hrithik that has done very well that will still be outgrossed by an action film with Devgan. The former is just about the best a pure multiplex film can achieve (genre et al), the latter can of course be greatly bettered as we’ve seen with some other stuff in this genre (i.e. with greater multiplex participation). Still even the Wanted mix (that film made 60 crores or more at the time.. this is more or less what Singham is doing) is enough to beat ZNMD.
Not saying that ZNMD defines the limit of a multiplex hit but it’s harder to get a better film and performer in that genre than the Singham one these days. In some ways Singham is the most interesting example to my mind in this whole dynamic since Ghajini. Because it’s not an ‘exceptional’ deal in terms of the star or the film. Sure Devgan’s been having a great run (and he’s another older generation star who’s enjoying a late resurgence.. not surprisingly the turn away from Yashraj fare enables him much as it did Salman) and the initials eventually get cumulative but he still isn’t getting the Salman sort of initial. In other words the multiplexes aren’t fully showing up for him absent a genre like Golmaal. And Singham is much more bread and butter masala than something like Dabanng in terms of the aesthetics and the tone and the mix of elements et al. So this model is a better one to duplicate in some ways.
The star who should really be shooting himself right now is Akshay Kumar. I say this again and again. He could have been in a position better than Salman let alone Devgan. He had a strong base with the comedies, he should have diversified into masala no later than Wanted if not after Ghajini. He’s missed the bus in a big way on this score.
“He’s missed the bus in a big way on this score.”
very aptly said satyam – can’t agree more. akki went on doing those mindless comedies……its like rajesh khanna went on doing those romantic films and one fine day he was simply rejected by public……thats why i really like aamir – experiment with every genre….in fact it was aamir’s ghajini which prompted salman to do hardcore action films and get those 100 cr hits….sallu did action films earlier but he never realized that he could captilalize in a huge way at b.o. like ghajini….akki shd. have done it to…but its too late now…..happy for devgn though….he has been fairly versatile in his choice of films and successful too….
Good to see ZNMD doing 80 crore net in india alone and overseas also a solid hit.Zoya had taken risk with high budget ZNMD after the flop of LBC and its paid off well. There are very few lady director in india film industry and really nice to see a lady director succeeding doing meaningful movie’s not like farah khan masala Junk movie’s.
obviously very many are plain nutty. Then some films are not even mentioned here. Also what is not revealed is the fact that Nahata actually relaxed his rating system a few years ago. But this does prove a point I’ve been making for years. Note how most of the SRK films through the past decade have been rated. But Nahata would then appear in the popular media and say the very opposite. He would indiscriminately call so many films of SRK’s hits and what not. Meanwhile he would argue against stuff like BnB and Munnabhai and RDB and JA. Irrespective of how one judges his ratings on these films the fact is that many of the SRK films are much lower and some pretty much scraping the bottom of the profitability barrel. If he had been consistent and said the same things about every star and film but then used these ratings one could at least excuse it. But he plays these selective games as he of course does today, in his journal he doesn’t but then how many people read these things?!
applauds Dhoni’s decision to recall Ian Bell after the controversial run out. Even though Bell was out technically, it was obvious that he was not going for the 4th run and was merely leaving the field for tea break.
I applaud it but it was quite stupid of Dhoni too IMO. India did nothing wrong. Bell made a naive call to think the ball was a 4, that the umpires had called tea etc. He made the clumsy and schoolboy error of not staying in his crease. He should have been out.
I think Indian side got soft during the break and probably heard the boo’s and felt guilty. Dravid after the match said they did not feel right, so fair enough they retracted their appeal. But really they did nothing wrong at all.
If your going to retract this decision then why not Harbhajans wicket. Clearly he got an edge on an LBW call.
Anyway India can’t win test matches with 3 bowlers. Harbhajan is injured and the 3 seamers did a good job bowling “his” overs. Worked their sockings off. And really India won’t be chasing 450+, this match is good as finished barring a miracle of sorts.
They have been poor too. 2 big window of opportunites. England at 120 odd for 8 and India at 250 odd for 4. Both situations, they needed to be ruthless. In the end, England scored 50 too many and India scored 100 to less. Knock off 150 from the 450+ they should be chasing and then there was a game. Instead, they did not take their chances and Harbhajan didn’t bowl for whatever reason. England scored at some 4.6 today. Boundaries all over the place. They were just ruthless. India miss this ruthlessness. They are extremely skillful and can conjure up some great performances. But that winning edge, or cutthroat attitude, to kill your opposition when they are there weakest, they seem to really lack it at some times.
Am glad about the resurgence of cricket fortunes for England. I always felt that it was not right that it had become a marginal cricket power for quite a while.
56/6…What the hell is wrong with Dhoni the batsman??? Even the keeping is not at it’s best. He needs his bat to wake up fast. Just because you have the likes of Tandulkar, Dravid and Laxman doesnt mean you don’t need to bat.
There is a chance of a fourth day finish !!
Time to change from a “neutral” to an English fan now…lol
44/4 India….
A clinical ruthless performance by England (aided by Indian injuries) has literally made the “no 1 test team” looking like a club side.
There might be some degree of fightback from 10dulkar, yuvraj and dhoni, but these guys will have to play the innings of their lifetime to come anywhere near 400…
Have been harping on this earlier than a test tour to England is different from even the other overseas trips esp now that the eng team is looking quite well balanced..
Few posers–
a) How can two batsmen be selected on the basis of their batting when they cannot play ONE short ball in a few correctly…
Every schoolboy following the match maybe knowing what to ball to these two boys (include yuvraj in this list)
Feel that the overseas batting careers of Mukund and Raina should be terminated asap (till further action esp the former)
b) when / how will the team management get rid of tjhis “bhajji” fascination. He should have been eased off even before this tour , forget about after the lords patheitc display.
In this match, the poor pacers had to fil in for an “injured” spinner!!!
c) Nothing to take away from the English performance—and atleast 7-8 guys are in form currently while indian team only has 2-3 in “playing condition”.
d) Knew that India might lose the no1 status following this series, but didnt know it will be so tame and listless….
disaster for sure but note how in the toughest seaming conditions Sachin is easily the most comfortable and even fluent. He can’t do anything here at 68/6 but this too is the stuff that often doesn’t make it into the stats. A 35 (which he is on so far) means much more than the number would suggest in these conditions where everyone else is just falling like dominoes. It reveals a certain class. And he’s done this very often. Some of his most impressive displays of class and talent in this sense even over the past 5-7 years have been some of these moments far more than the centuries. But you can’t quantify these moments.
Or we saw Dravid with a century in each inning. Not the same conditions but nonetheless he was lifting the load each time. Gritty stuff. And this is what people today don;t have enough appreciation for. You can’t always hammer the opposition. You can’t always be in a comfortable position. Sometimes you have to dig in deep for those greater reserves and it requires minimally a Dravid kind of talent to be able to do this.
Leaving this aside it’s still the old guard that has to carry the load.
yeah.. 56 with a SR of 65 is quite remarkable in the circumstances. Obviously not enough but nothing could have really been enough today. heroic performance by Harbhajan as well. The whole scorecard reads like an absolute disaster.
Singham held up well in its second weekend with business around 13.25 crore nett. All circuits sustained well but it was Mumbai, Bihar, CP Berar, CI, Rajasthan and Nizam doing best as they are sustaining from high levels. The drop from last weekend is around 55%.
Singham has now collected 61 crore nett in 10 days and it should finish around the 68 crore nett mark after two weeks.
In the B and C centres of Maharashtra it is even performing better than Ready. The under performance has come in the North where Delhi City and Punjab have seen just average to above average business.
Singham Surpasses Salman Khan’s Ready & Dabangg At Places
August 1st, 2011 by Mrigank Dhaniwala
Singham has created records in 1st week at most of the ‘B’ and ‘C’ class centres of Maharashtra. Even in an ‘A’ class centre like Pune, it has created theatre records in some single-screen cinemas. In other words, at places where it has created records, its collections are better than those of Ready and Dabangg. In all, it has created records in more than 50 cinemas!
Singham’s Box-Office Records: Fact File
The Ajay Devgan starrer has recovered in the first week itself almost the entire MG royalty amount paid by Bombay distributor Ramesh Sippy to Reliance Entertainment. It has collected a net of Rs. 21 crore from Bombay circuit! Break-up:- Bombay city & suburbs Rs. 4.54 crore; Thane Rs. 2.42 crore; Pune Rs. 2.65 crore; rest of Maharashtra Rs. 2.43 crore; Goa Rs. 36 lakh; Bombay Karnataka Rs. 47 lakh; Gujarat Rs. 6.59 crore; Saurashtra Rs. 1.47 crore.
Singham has created a Chhattisgarh record for single- screen cinemas at Shyam, Raipur by collecting 9,37,828/- in 1st week. The first week’s share from Shyam is more than 8,25,000/-. Gross collections at Shyam are better than the gross collections at each of the multiplexes of Raipur, viz. Cinemax, Inox, Glitz and Krishna Big.
The film has created a theatre record by collecting 8,51,602/- in 1st week at Sangam Cineplex, Bhopal. It has also created a theatre record at Alpana Cineplex, Bhopal.
At a theatre in Chattarpur (C.I.), collections of Singham were better than the collections of each of Ready and Dabangg.
Ashta, a small centre in C.I., has a population of 40,000 only. Singham collected 1,73,983/- in 1st week at Anshay cinema of Ashta, which is the highest ever for any film.
Singham has created a city record by collecting 3,48,901/- in 1st week at Jagatdarshan, Guna (C.I.).
Singham has created city records in 1st week at Mahendra, Barawani (C.I.) and Vivek, Biaora (C.I.).
Singham has created a theatre record in 1st week at Mayur, Morena. It collected better than Ready.
Singham has created a theatre record in 1st week at Maharaj, Chattarpur (C.I.). Collection was better than collection of each of Ready and Dabangg.
Box-Office: Singham – 51 Cr, Zindagi – 63 Cr
July 30th, 2011 by Komal Nahta
Exclusive report by Koimoi.com Editor Komal Nahta on the box-office fate of Ajay Devgan starrer Singham and Hrithik Roshan starrer Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.
Singham has done remarkable business in its first week (July 22-28). After a net of Rs. 9 crore on the first day, the weekend ended at Rs. 31 crore as Saturday saw a slight rise in collections and Sunday saw a big jump (Rs. 12.41 crore). The contribution of the single-screen cinemas to the Rs. 31 crore weekend was bigger than that of the multiplexes. In fact, the Ajay Devgan starrer was so strong in the single-screen cinemas that it outshone even blockbusters like Dabangg at some centres. The last four days of the week did not see the usual sharp fall in collections. In fact, the film netted Rs. 6 crore on Monday, Rs. 5.5 crore on Tuesday, Rs. 4.6 crore on Wednesday and approximately Rs. 4 crore on Thursday, taking the week’s net total to Rs. 51 crore. This is the highest first-week collection of a solo Ajay Devgan starrer. The second weekend has also started off very well, thanks to no star-cast opposition this week. At the rate at which the film is going, its second week should touch Rs. 18 to 20 crore in spite of Ramzan starting early next week.
The 2 week total of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is roughly Rs. 63 crore.
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara continues to rock in the multiplexes. After the first week’s net of Rs. 44 crore, it added another Rs. 19 crore to its kitty, taking its 14-day total to roughly Rs. 63 crore. Since the multiplexes have contributed much more to the film’s revenues, the producers/distributors have stood to gain in the first two weeks as they are entitled to 52.5% (instead of 50%) in the first week from multiplexes and 45% (instead of 42.5%) in the second week.
Isn’t this a sweet deal?! Singham is going to be nowhere close to Ready let alone Dabanng but Nahata keeps focusing on the centers where it is doing better than those films!
Komal is as bad as BOI and Taran and tainted. After playing it up so much before release, he has no choice. These paid idiots dont realise they paint themselves into a corner and have no qualms about being ‘dishonest’ in their commentary. I would paint their supporters with the same brush. It cant be more blatant than this. Truly, pathetic.
Ra. One makers quash rumours around Priyanka playing a transvestite
By Joginder Tuteja, August 4, 2011 – 11:59 IST
There have been rumours and there will be rumours. But the strangest of them all is the one which is currently surrounding Shah Rukh Khan’s Ra.One that is otherwise making news for all the right reasons. That’s because it has been allegedly reported on a leading international website that Priyanka Chopra, who would be seen in a cameo in the sci-fi thriller, is playing a transvestite here.
“It was shocking to see something like this being reported and that too on an international website of high repute. How silly can it be? Seems like someone out there is trying to harm the film in whatever ways possible and spreading such rumours”, says a source who was first to notice this at imdb.com.
Though Priyanka Chopra has played variety of roles in her career so far, including a serial husband killer in 7 Khoon Maaf, enacting the role of a transvestite was taking things a little too far and also being highly imaginative, though in a negative way. Naturally, Anubhav Sinha, the film’s director, isn’t wee bit pleased and feels that someone out there is trying to create a negative word around the film.
“On these specific websites anyone can go and post anything as per their will. When they don’t find the right information, they turn malicious and start spreading rumours. The same holds true when it comes to Priyanka’s role in the film as well. Since her cameo is a closely guarded secret, some desperate soul may have just turned mischievous and updated this on the site. That’s sad because by no stretch of imagination can you actually have Priyanka get into a role like this”, says Anubhav.
Now that should hopefully settle the rumour before it takes gigantic proportions.
Singham was rock steady on its second Monday with around 2.30-2.40 crore nett. The second week has grossed 16.25 crore nett approx in four days and and the second week should go to around 22 crore nett. Some territory numbers for the second Monday were as follows.
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara had a super strong strong third weekend and dropped just 30% from the second weekend. The film has collected 72.50 crore nett in 17 days and is likely to be at 78 crore nett after 3 weeks and it could finish its lifetime business around 90 crore nett. Below are the third weekend numbers with second weekend in brackets. All figures in lakhs.
Singham is ramazingly steady in its second as the Monday business came out at around 2.75 crore nett and Tuesday looks just a 10% drop from Monday. The weekdays will collect around 9 crore nett.
It is the Mumbai circuit where the business is phenomenal and it should cross the 20 crore distributor share mark which till date only five films have done. Mumbai circuit top five as per distributor share.
1. Three Idiots – 38.31 crore
2. Golmaal 3 – 27.76 crore
3. Dabangg – 25.05 crore
4. Ready – 23.98 crore
5. Ghajini – 20.59 crore
Singham is looking at a 20-21 cr distributor share in Mumbai circuit as it heads towards a lifetime 85 crore nett all India total
Zindagi Na Milega Dobara is looking at 77 crore nett plus business in three weeks. The second to third week drop will be just 33% and if this repeated it its fourth week, the business in four weeks will stand at over 85 crore nett. It is looking possible as this week like last week will not see much new competition at the box office for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. The business so far is as follows.

“He’s missed the bus in a big way on this score.”
very aptly said satyam – can’t agree more. akki went on doing those mindless comedies……its like rajesh khanna went on doing those romantic films and one fine day he was simply rejected by public……thats why i really like aamir – experiment with every genre….in fact it was aamir’s ghajini which prompted salman to do hardcore action films and get those 100 cr hits….sallu did action films earlier but he never realized that he could captilalize in a huge way at b.o. like ghajini….akki shd. have done it to…but its too late now…..happy for devgn though….he has been fairly versatile in his choice of films and successful too….

check out many of the Nahata classifications down the years:
http://www.naachgaana.com/2011/07/31/komal-nahta-film-verdicts/#more-64615
obviously very many are plain nutty.

Monday 1st August 2011 11.30 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network
