The fact that Satyam says ‘ This is not my kind of poster’ or Krish saying ‘ it looks weird’ means that the poster has done its job. In todays over-communicated environment your poster ( as well as your film) must cut through the clutter. Today normal is boring. Conventional wisdom would say a Varun Dhawan film with songs like Saturday would do better than a Siddharth Malhotra film with songs like Galiyaan. But that’s not how it happens. Ek Villain opens and collecys way higher than Humpty Sharma. With this pooster Mary Kom will create far bigger waves than say a film like Mardani, with its safe, predictable premise and pretty poster.
The film will eventually do as much as the it deserves to do. The content not the poster will shape the BO. Clearly the comments here are vis a vis the poster. No one knows yet anything about the content, we can only speak about the poster.
Therefore, referencing just the poster, it is clear that Priyanka is trying is little too hard, seems like she is haming not acting. She makes Ralph Macchio look like a seasoned thespian. The first impression is that she is trying to win over the front benchers.
Moreover I don’t buy that there exists SOME conventional wisdom that says that Varun’s film would outperform Ek Villian. I think you are trying too hard support your narrative, much like Priyanka in the poster above.
It will be better, I hope. I dont go by posters.
Its the biopic of an icon and it wont be overlong like BMB and unlike GG with less songs and dances.
I am looking forward to this and also Mardaani. Whatever the fate, the actresses are not bad.
I must say I’ve never been one for sports biopics. Not even the greatest fan of sports films unless it’s presented in an unusual format or is meant to stand in for something greater. Most of the time what happens is that you either get banal attempts to try and recapture the essence of the sport (why do we need films for this? We can watch the actual thing!) or the behind-the-scenes gossip/hardball et al (this too is never as interesting as the actual drama that unfolds in a game) or finally the individual struggles (I have respect for athletes but I have somehow never quite been able to see them as ‘heroes’, i.e. outside the contexts of the game). Any one of these narratives makes for an utterly mediocre film though depending on the subject some of these are more entertaining than others. The only sports films that work are something like Lagaan or Invictus (not that this is otherwise a great film) because once again here the real ‘thing’ is something larger than the sport.
The problem with sport films is that they all tend to have a very predictable narrative, much like most superhero movies. BMB was the worst, a painfully self important film.
Bandra NRI: Of cpurse no one can judge the film from the poster and therefore predict its fate. But judging the poster alone, what it has done is to position the film as a different kettle of fish than the usual fare, arousing audience interest, and I think that’s smart marketing.
This is a movie about a boxer- do you expect her to simpler coyly at the camera?! Boxers in the ring do have some pretty fierce expressions! I was highly skeptical about this when it was announced, but I actually think that the posters look pretty good.
Most photos of boxers during a fight can be used to illustrate “focus/concentration”.
Here Priyanka is having some version of an outer body experience. She is letting go of her pent up emotions. She is not in control, she is out of control.
I don’t know what posters you are seeing Bandra…this looks to me like believable expressions from a boxer in the ring, and certainly miles more authentic than most of the stuff Bollywood puts out.
See any of the “Classic” Ali or Foreman or Tyson photos. They appear somewhat pensive, in a zone (deep within themselves), far removed from the audience. Their focus is solely on the opponent. It is almost as if they don’t register the existence of anything else.
In contrast, PK is playing it for the audience. The opponent does not exist (it seems), she is merely performing for the audience . The mind is absent, it is all superficial, as if one fights with the body alone.
Ami, you nailed it. And the second still really has character. It’s got grit written all over it. I too was skeptical when the project as announced. But these posters have given me some hope. At least they have got the look right. And that’s a start.
These deliberate expressions are quite repulsive. When a boxer is in the ring, fighting it out, I doubt whether she / he is aware of her facial contortions. The posters here are posers. PC grimacing, showing aggression makes it to be part of her character. Kom’s. The need to externalize and be deliberate doesn’t bring in any kind of authenticity.
PC might as well be starring as a WWE champ. The exaggerated open-mouthed yells would seem more included.
And in the second pic, has she done something to her eyes to make her look more like Kom?
I sense a film on Mary Kom is being made a little too early. I dont think biographies of sportspersons should be made while they’re in the prime of their careers with many more achievements and medals in store. It’s like making a movie on Sachin immediately after the 1996 world cup.
Anyway, i guess Kom deserves it. This will probably result in more media focus on her and better future for her child.
The problem with these posters IMO is that PC is looking into the camera and you can see that. If this had been a poster with a far away look sort of thing it would have been much more effective.
Here is a pic of the real Mary kom – http://t.co/LrlCl3mbXb. I have to say the likeness of the photo here and the one above is pretty strong but then the Mary Kom picture is not from a fight but from a photo shoot and that exactly how the poster looks.
Agree with Amy (but not with arthi !)
I think ‘repulsive’ is too strong a word. These are merely publicity stills intended specifically to offset any ‘motion blur’..
Mainstream Bollywood isn’t kind to understatement (sic!) esp in publicity posters, hence the undeniable deliberation in the first pic. Though the second one makes up for it (as ‘prose’ points out).
And are we talking of a boxing match or a meditating monk deep in ‘focus’.
Either ways, it’s a welcome project showcasing a female sports icon perhaps a first in Bollywood, so perhaps all this nitpicking is unwarranted..(suprisingly all the criticism above seems to be coming from girls lol)
The ‘icon’ is apt (& so is the ‘actor’)
All the best PC… Go4it
Ps: as for ‘out of body experiences’, I had a few thoughts on it but for that the ‘moderation’ needs to be removed 🙂
Your fixation with classifying opinions into men/women (boys/girls) is perhaps a clinical condition stemming from some painfully deep wound. Clearly, deep inside you there is a patch of soft spot that needs to heal. It is sad to see someone with such scars.
But, in today’s world it is disturbing to hear someone repeadly discriminate opinions in such manner. Your pain and deep wounds not withstanding, such behavior is horribly despicable. Clearly you need to sort yourself up, because it is messing up your rationality.
Take the example of your statement about “moderation” . Do you really think the outcome without moderation will be any different ? Is there a planet on which you can “win” and not be seen as yet another Charlie Sheen ?
So give it up. Express yourself, enjoy, and yes stop commenting if the pressure is toying with existing wounds. Above all seek help.
and Apex before you start attacking me for letting this opinion stand let me add in advance that though firmly expressed there is nothing inherently wrong with this comment. This is the sort of thing I’ve been telling you about for such a long time but you refuse to listen. Every statement of yours is obscene or even a serious comment cannot end without the addition of this sort of thing. Furthermore not only is it obscene it is horribly regressive, the way you keep characterizing women and so forth. If you keep doing this you can’t expect others who visit not to be offended or have an opinion on it. But when this happens you completely cross all boundaries and put up atrocious comments in response. If these are not let through you scream ‘bias’. Once upon a time and though you always had these tendencies you were nowhere close to this sort of person. Not sure what’s happened to you but I’m afraid there’s not much I can disagree with in the comment above. Your most recent comment is ok.
In continuation with the philosophy of creating varied content, Madhu Mantena of Phantom Films announced his next big film Doga based on the comic book character of the same name.
Confirming the news, Madhu Mantena of Phantom films said, “We are happy to back Anurag’s vision of Doga for the film. We have acquired the rights of the book, and in all possibilities would go on floors sometime next year.” Mantena, who partners CAA-Kwan too, one of the biggest Celebrity Management companies, plans to work closely with Manish and Sanjay Gupta of Raj Comics for exploring various others possibilities of taking the comic book character beyond films.
Anurag Kashyap said, “I am obviously quite happy, that Doga is now finally taking shape. Its’ something which has kept me excited over the years, and it feels great to know that Madhu is working out details to make it reach as wide as possible.”

Sports movies, if done well, may turn out to be very interesting to watch.
I’ve watched the first Rocky and then Rocky Balboa a number of times and I can watch these two movies again and again.
Ali was a fine movie. I also really enjoyed the Costner starrers Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and Tin Cup.
In India, only Lagaan and BMB (to an extent for the latter) have done justice to the genre. CDI is strictly alright but overrated. Apne was alright in portions but half an hour too long.
I don’t know to what extent Priyanka will do justice to the role here. It’s a biopic, so a lot will depend on her performance.
Found Priyanka quite good in her earlier movies like Aitraaz but it’s obvious she hasn’t improved a lot since then.
It’s probably her last big movie as well. Haven’t heard about her signing any big project lately. She was completely overshadowed by Kangana in Krish 3.
The first Rocky is a classic but again I’d say it’s about something more than the sport. I still find most of the other parts very enjoyable but the first is the only truly worthwhile film here. Have never had much patience for Costner and some of those efforts!
Yes Rocky (the first one) was more a human interest story and not just about an athlete or sport. For the same reason I like Bull Durham and Fields of Dreams.
“Aye kancha… Saala Bandook bhi dikhata hai aur peechhe bhi hat ta hai… Hain… Peeche nahi hatneka Kancha… Peechhe hatne se puraana zamaana lautke nahi aane waala!! ”
This dialogue is apt to this unidirectional ‘interaction’ where my key replies are blocked whilst Satyam /cronies make “unanswerable” arguments …
It’s like kids getting together to beat an ace player by making him play with his eyes closed or hands tied
AND insisting on hiding the fact that his eyes were closed …
I’m enjoying watching this JUVENILE behaviour …and letting these kids ‘win’
But Satyam ask yourselves honestly –r u liking this fakery…
Atleast have the grace to let in fair comments (like this one)–
Have faith n confidence in yourselves
This is such a hilarious comment and I could not resist laughing out loud and was imagining apex questioning Satyam in that bachchanesque style…. “Aye kancha… Though Satyam is the quintessential Vijay Dinanath Chauhan of this place but that is such an apt dialogue to the proceedings leading to this plot. A nice little curve ball / salvo from Apex in Bachchan’s den.
On another note Satyam your caustic responses to Z’s constant banter are such fun read not for anything else but for the fact they bring out the funny bone in you and sarcasm at its best.
Is that just because you dislike the genre? Because this is as good as it gets for a sports biopic trailer from Bollywood IMO ( it looks better than Bhaag Milkha Baag did)
I find this glorification of sports figures silly (i.e. representing them as ‘heroes’ of some sort). Unless you have someone truly extraordinary like Mohammed Ali whose biography criss-crosses a number of cultural archives or histories. Most sports films, even in Hollywood, are utterly predictable. Didn’t like BMB though I don’t recall the trailer at this point. Usually Mehra is sharp in this sense (though BMB was his weakest moment even on this score). Secondly Priyanka in some of these posters strikes me as grotesque. Don’t have anything against the film otherwise.
LOL! You are an extremely persnickety audience, Satyam! On the one hand, you dislike fluffy multiplex films with feather-thin plots about the protagonist facing such struggles as learning to make eggs or having to choose between Diana Penty and Deepik Padukone. On the other hand, you have a film about a poor woman from north-East India, overcoming significant social and economic hurdles and going on to win an Olympic medal in boxing (despite a serious lack of infrastructure/ sports sponsorship) all thanks to her determination and hard work, and you still think that this isn’t significant/ heroic enough to merit a film! 😛
And why shouldn’t sports people be thought of as heroic when they inspire public adoration and national pride on such an immense scale? Dedication, discipline and teamwork are all qualities that are universally respected. Not to mention there is a certain primal thrill to the victory of the fittest, strongest and fastest. If one can idolize Abhishek Bachchan, why not Mary Kom or Milkha Singh? 😉
But I don’t idolize Abhishek Bachchan! I have always found him interesting for certain reasons but I won’t get into all that here except to say that he has always represented for me the ‘promise’ of a different kind of Hindi cinema. And for very particular reasons. But otherwise I don’t even idolize his father in any uncritical sense.
On your more immediate point the thing is I don’t really have a sentimental bone in my body about these things. I find most Hollywood films about physically or mentally challenged people banal and boring too. There are lots of human interest stories which reveal a great deal of individual courage and/or many other admirable qualities but just these things do not (at least for me) constitute an interesting film. I am of course not referring to pure escapist entertainment here. Think about it this way — you would never find a book interesting if it were ‘only’ the equivalent of such a film. Even important biographies have to do a lot more than just tell the story. They have to become important narratives in their own right and in a way even transcend the immediate subject to get at something deeper. At all levels in life there are people who have lots of strong attributes, who come up in life in very improbable ways. I often see the backgrounds of certain singers on shows like saregama and I’m amazed as to how they were able to learn everything they did and get to that level. But this doesn’t on its own make a great film for me. I don’t choose between BMB and Cocktail. I reject both! For wholly different reasons of course.
And again that ancient Greek ‘Olympics’ ideal of the best athlete and so forth has never had much attraction for me. Partly because the kind of ‘hero’ (if you will) that I’m interested in is a lot less the sum of such ‘conditioning’ and much more either a freak of nature (with or without a ‘tragic flaw’) or so only in a very complicated way. With the super-achieving athlete things are all too obvious. There’s nothing interesting here.
Very good trailer. PC looks great and best part is supporting cast.. very well casted. Besides, truly remarkable story of Mary Kom.. becoming world champion from a small town in Manipur. Incredible story and now will be remembered in history for regular people courtesy of this movie! Finally deserving biopic!

Enjoy your weekend !

Agree Amy –nice trailer
And PC is in full form–seems she will achieve what she couldn’t in a worthy performance in barfi..
Think PC should stop doing junk after this and this should form the ‘cherry on the cake’ of her brilliant career ….

This is looking good. It even suggests that it might be one of the best sports film from Bollywood. Fingers crossed.
