Priyanka Chopra in ABC’s Quantico

Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra is heading to American television with a lead role in the ABC drama “Quantico.”
“Wow. I’m still reeling,” she said Monday night at a party to celebrate the presentations in New York this week where networks unveil new programming to advertisers.
“Quantico” was “my first pick out of everything ABC sent me … and I got it, so I was like, ‘and it got picked up,’ so it all happened so fast. I just hope it’s amazing and people love it.”
Chopra plays an FBI trainee at Quantico Base in Virginia.
“All of (the FBI agents) have secret pasts and something happens where one of us is blamed and then I have to find out who did it,” she laughed, adding that there’s “a lot of drama and all the fun, of course.”
Chopra, 32, is a former Miss World. She has starred in films like the romance musicals “Fashion” and “Andaaz,” and has also released music.
“American TV is at the best place it has ever been. It has incredible content,” she said.
“I binge watch TV shows when I’m doing hair and makeup, and I just think that all (American) shows that are coming out are so different — so much variety and there’s so many different kinds of people on it that the uniqueness of each show is amazing.”
Chopra, who will continue to make Bollywood movies, said she knows her fans in India are excited because “they’ve trended ‘Quantico’ worldwide like five times.”
Actually “American TV” is probably going thru its worst phase since…ever. There are few dramas on cable that are worthy to talk about but other than that network TV is struggling and the poor ratings of the shows prove it. If this show fails though, I won’t put it on Priyanka for the stated reason. However, it does seem like she is going for another shot to ‘sneak’ into Hollywood movies after failing to make any noise (pun intended) in the music industry.

Fantastic! Great to see Priyanka doing a proper lead role and not a sidey role in American TV series. Even the plot looks alright. Some sort of achievement for Indian film actress especially when’s still active in Hindi films.
Personally, Priyanka is the only model-turned actress in Indian film industry where the first image about her is about an actress and not a former Miss World. I can’t think about any other model turned actress as much who successfully wiped her modeling image. Then 2nd actress I think who is known for being an actor and not a model is Juhi Chawla. Thats about it. Everyone else is still famous for their modeling career and achievements and not as an actor (yes including Ash who wears former Miss World image on her sleeve 24/7).

Why is it so prestigious to act in an american tv serial than in an Indian tv serial? I am not talking about Bachchan or anil Kapoor who acted in Indian tv serials.

I don’t think its about prestige but the fact that very rarely you get offered lead roles in any American TV series is a big deal in itself. So, now we have problem in Priyanka accepting this while continuing to do Hindi films and still not shouting from the roof tops?

Its weird you bring that up. I doubt anyone on this blog watches Indian TV series that too saas bahu types. I really loved Amitabh’s Yudh(you can see my comment in that thread) but the point here it Indian actress getting a lead role in American TV and if you don’t see thats a big deal maybe then its fine. Also, I don’t remember any negative comments about Indian TV serials on here as well. Not sure what you referring to and your comment on its own didn’t clarify that part.

My comment is not any reflection on priyanka and I am very happy for her.
My grouse is that Indian tv serials are looked down upon as something inferior. They cater to a very large audience who are only familiar with vernacular languages. I agree nowadays the serials have become very low quality products but it was not so a few years back when trps did not rule and when Ekta did not appear on the scene. There used to be good serials by Ajay sinha, Ravi Rai and some others. When serials ended within 6 months or three months. Some of the evergreen serials of DD and early Zee TV.

To me, this is a big deal only because this is a lead role for her in a network tv series. I just hope she is ready for the scrutiny that comes with this deal though…because if this show flops big time…she will never hear the end of it from the Indian media (mostly because of their idiotic reasons).
On the other hand, if the show (and her acting) gets critical acclaim on top of good ratings…she might be nominated for lead role Prime Time Emmy award, that would be quite an achievement.

Lol. You are talking about 90’s. I think Ekta was rampant from 2000(Kyunki…) and all those directors you mentioned had their TV series in 90’s and its whole generation ahead in last 15 years watching the same stuff. Now its that or reality TV series which are Indian versions of International TV shows.

Yes. But after Ekta’s entry also, there were some memorable serials and even now one or two try to survive. As for reality shows, they are all imitations. Desi versions.

And a lot of it IS saas-bahu crap. And American TV serials on an average are far superior. And no point talking of Buniyad and Nukkad days..that was decades back! There was one serial Maryada on Starplus which did not garner enough trps and mercifully ended naturally. Not a bad one. Good acting by everyone.
And some serials starring Varun Badola usually offer good entertainment like Phir Subah Hogi, Ek chabbhi hai Padosan mein and his past serials like Astitva ek Prem Kahani and Koshish ek Asha.
Even Balikavadhu’s earlier episodes were good.
These serials were not decades old.

Sanjana: No one is saying you cannot find a stray good serial among hundreds of serials being aired on scores of channels. But how do the serial you have mentioned stack up against the best of American TV? What is your honest answer?
And what would be big achievement in Priyanka acting in an Indian TV serial? Any Bollywood star can walk into an Indian TV serial without any effort. Getting a significant role in a major American TV serial is tough for an Indian actress, and no one has done it before; and that is why it is being talked about.

But hindi filmstars, however famous they are, are not readily accepted by tv audience. It had been proved.

Ahh..that sign of progress/liberalism necessary for an Indian woman/actor in Hollywood and Hi-fi to be classified ‘modern’ – having sex at the drop of a panty..umm..hat in a parking lot.
So we now move from one stereotype of cab-drivers and 7/11 owners or coconut hair-oiled desi techies to sex-any-time-with-any-who stereotype. This is truly ‘cross-over’ for you.
And the woman is named Alex Parrish who now takes on the mantle of preserving the ‘freedoms of American peoples”!!! Go figure..

Is it true you had a clause stating you wouldn’t play an Indian on the show?
Interestingly, Quantico was written for an all-American girl, a white girl. So they tweaked the story. My ethnicity on the show is half Indian-half Caucasian. You know I went to school in America, I grew up there, and all the Indian characters that I saw on American shows are stereotypes and talk like Apu from The Simpsons, who I hate because growing up, everyone would ask me ‘How come you don’t talk like Apu?’. It used to piss me off. My basis with ABC was that I want to do an ethnically ambiguous part, and that’s the only way I would do it. I didn’t want to do a big fat Indian Punjabi family, that’s so expected from a Bollywood actress. I had clearly told them that if you want to treat me like an actress and not a ‘Bollywood’ jewel, where am supposed to dance and do those things, then I am fine. Which is why the parts they chose for me and scripts I read were for characters that are ethnically ambiguous.

Saw the first few episodes of the first season. It was perfectly interesting but it didn’t hold me. Also for all sorts of reasons I just wasn’t very into the subject matter here.

HOMELAND season 1 and season 2 are the one of the best ever that I have seen on American television. Perfect mix of escapism, thrill, and entertainment – inspite of excessive sex & gore. And though it would have to be the zillionth time Islamist extremism was tackled, there was a lot of believability to it and never seemed stale. More than anything, it was a success as regards to the whole product. The sum of the parts was as good as the parts themselves.

I watched two free episodes last night (showtime). The reason I asked (I also watched and liked season 1 and 2 and like Claire Danes a lot) there are few Indians in the series, Nimrat Kaur, Suraj (life of pi), and Sarita Chaudary in non-desi sterotype roles. I heard Nimrat rejected 30 offers before accepting homeland and found her character (ISI agent) immensely satisfying.
