Abhishek in Sanjay Gupta’s Ek Tha Gangster

It’s been less than a month since the release of his first film this year, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Jazbaa, and Sanjay Gupta already has another Bachchan on board for his next.

Known for his hi-octane gangster dramas like the Shootout series, Gupta’s next is titled Ek Tha Gangster and features Abhishek Bachchan in a lead role. The racy thriller is based on S. Hussain Zaidi’s 2014 bestseller, Byculla to Bangkok, a sequel to his 2012 novel, Dongri to Dubai.

The film will trace how youngsters were recruited and went on to become local goon Arun Gawli, wheelchairbound Ashwin Naik, a former engineer and Chhota Rajan, former deputy and friend-turned-foe of Dawood Ibrahim, who was arrested in Bali last week.”The film won’t focus on Chhota Rajan, but will follow the colourful lives of the cops and politicians. There will be songs and dances as well,” a source close to the director told Mirror.

Junior Bachchan who was last seen in Umesh Shukla’s comic caper, All Is Well, will be seen in a more gritty avatar. The actionpacked drama will also feature police inspectors inspired by real-life cops Vijay Salaskar and Pradeep Sharma.

Gupta had also purchased the film rights of Zaidi’s book, Dongri to Dubai: Six Decades of the Mumbai Mafia for his John Abraham-starrer, Shootout at Wadala. However, he is quick to say that Ek Tha Gangster has no resemblance to his earlier film. “This film will be a lot more filmy, featuring A-listers, with massy dialogue,” the source promises.

Gupta had bought the rights of the sequel last year and had titled his script Mumbai Saga, but now with a few changes in the story, the film has been re-titled Ek Tha Gangster and will roll in Mumbai in December.

“Sanjay’s screenplay is riveting. He is the best mafia moviemaker in the industry. There are some sensational, high-voltage scenes I am looking forward to viewing on the big screen, in particular, the first interaction between a don and an encounter specialist. That should keep viewers glued to their seats,” Zaidi informed Mirror.

The filmmaker plans to wrap-up the gangster-drama by March-end, after which he will begin prepping for his next with Hrithik Roshan (Mirror, October 22).

  1. This movie will do good to Abhi and his tall , broody presence fits the gangsta profile. Further Gupta has the required flashiness to make it audience friendly unlike a RGV or Kashyap dark settings throughout.

Had real fun watching Shootout at Lokhandwala with Sanjay Dutt and even Shootout at Wadala with John Abraham……though sunny leone added to the mix with that campy item number – laila teri le legi, tu likh ke le le

  2. Must add the title Ek Tha Gangster already has half the battle won…..esp coming off Salman’s Ek Tha Tiger…

The title similarity / reference itself will create enough buzz and let’s face it, today movies are all about the required buzz and chatter…

  4. Abhishek has replaced John Abraham who was signed first for this movie. This movie needs strong supporting actors for it to stand out.. I hope there’s good set of actors besides Abhishek.

This is good news for Abhishek,
Finally saw All is Well and it deserved to flop, I am surprised who approved of this project.
Abhishek should stay away from Rishi Kapoor for some time now.

    • why stay away from Rishi? TBH i think Abhishek has missed the boat, he should probably look to either produce or if he has the talent direct movies. No harm in cutting your losses and moving on to something else. there is just too much competition now, if he has to make it big, he has to do a few things: he has to work out and get a decent physique to begin with, and then of course choose his projects (among the options he has) wisely.

  6. On paper this is not half as interesting as All is Well was. I don’t have high hopes on this. It will struggle to gross as much as even Jazbaa. Bad career move, I would say. Better to do a comedy or a family movie to win back audience, a movie like this anyways keeps the base audience away..

  7. “Abhishek’s role will be heavily modelled on Rajan’s life and style. The film will also show how Rajan became a major player in the underworld at that time. It will have a lot of style, charisma and heavy-duty dialogues. But, the makers don’t want to talk about the film as of now,” says a source from the film’s unit.
While Abhishek couldn’t be reached for a comment, Sanjay says, “Let’s wait for the official announcement. There are many surprises in store.”

    • This reminded me of Company. Not many of them are aware but when Company was 1st conceived- RGV had these roles in mind… Amitabh in Mohanlal’s role, Abhishek in Vivek’s role and SRK in Ajay’s role. He also was interested to ask Jaya Bachchan to play Abhi’s mom’s role. But then halfway through the casting process, he dropped the idea casting stars and wanted to cast complete new comers. Then he signed Anoop Soni as Malik and Vivek Oberoi. He was meeting Ajay for another movie and he suddenly liked Ajay’s demeanor during interview and came back and dropped Anoop Soni and took on Ajay Devgn. Rest they say is the history..

  8. This will be good for Abhi as long as Gupta makes it in commercial tone and not make it too serious.

  10. EXCLUSIVE: John Abraham is Finalised for Sanjay Gupta’s Next – Mumbai Saga

” John Abraham has worked with close friend Sanjay Gupta in Shootout At Wadala and Zinda. The two are thick as thieves and the latest buzz is that they may come together again for Sanjay Gupta’s next directorial venture Mumbai Saga.
John has many a time made his fondness for Sanjay known. He had said a long time back, “I’m going to stand by Sanjay Gupta. I’ll work with him as many times as he wants me to. Everyone in this industry is opportunitic, and justifiably so. When I was in a crisis Sanjay Gupta stood by my side like a rock. As far as I’m concerned we’re friends for life.”
Well, it is no surprise then that these two are planning their next venture together. Official confirmations on this are yet awaited. ”

    • Abhi shouldn’t do it if it’s multi starrer. Remember what john did in dhoom, of course in that movie john had full blown masala role.
