  1. Looks like Satyam promoting Indu Sarkar over Mubakaran. Putting Indu Sarkar name first over high budgeted and big movie Mubakaran in the thread. 😎

You should really really watch the X Files. It will take your paranoia to another level.

In any case fine you provided some ‘facts’. But along with it came ‘she must be really special’ and ‘all 3 best in the romantic phase’. I don’t think it’s the best in the romantic – an odd comment. And I don’t think she’s really special either. Anyway no one can disprove or prove the subjective aspects here so yes 3 films with 3 directors. No directors were at their peak and neither SRK. Neither were historic – whatever RNBDJ did was outdone weeks later by Ghajini and SOS put up a fight against a much ‘bigger’ film post Yash Chopra’s death.

So it kind of counts for very little. It’s not like these films with Chopra’s have made her. Her 2 biggest grossers remain PK and Sultan. And that’s a more telling fact.

I even remember Z or someone saying you’ve really made it when Aditya Chopra signs you with respect to Bekifre and Ranveer Singh. It meant little. These are just passe and fleeting trivia in a world to elevate SRK and anything connected to him.

SRK’s connections are – Aditya, Karan, Farah and Kajol (till she defended Ajay for Shivaay over ADHM). That meant she is no longer in your pecking order.

Blogs/clans – NG had many a SRK fan. He was in a decent phase chasing the glory of Bachchan with KBC and Don. But since all that went belly up you get less of it. I’m sure that if SRK got in his groove the fanatics will arrive, dust themselves off etc.

Or he’s just alphabetical. Or anti BOI and supportive of small films. Or he’s just made the biggest mistake ever by ‘ Putting Indu Sarkar name first over high budgeted and big movie Mubakaran in the thread’. Or the alphabet logic is as ‘factual’ as one can do things. JHMS will need to change title or Satyam will need to apply reverse logic – if he does I’m there to call him out as a closet SRK fanatic.

Another pointless fact about the title of a box office thread. This is amazing Trivia.

My last comment on this. You read at your will or respond in kind with comments or more lovely baby pictures. To dismiss the Ghajini and SOS comparison as yawn, kind of is an admittance that RNBDJ and JTHJ don’t really mean much and in kind the trivia itself is pointless. I wouldn’t even call Anushka as some romance queen like Madhuri or Kajol could have been labelled.

          As an aside –
Aditya has steadily declined as a director to the point of the embarrassing Befikre – his MPKDH moment.

His Mohabbatein had all the ingredients of blockbuster material. His focus on capturing young romance at the expense of SRK and Aishwariya’s romance just clogged the film with repetitive sequences of boredom youth romance, tales of unrequited love. He could have presented a first half of SRK and Aishwariya and led the second half with the extraordinary exchanges between SRK and Bachchan (the only elements that stick in memory). The backstory is dealt with in a 2 sequences if I remember correctly but the 6 youngsters didn’t merit such exposure in what was an explosive storyline between tradition and modern romance. So one can say he introduced new actors – great, hardly non of which are leads today.

RNBDJ he just made a terrible mistake in making Raj a caricature of the real Raj – the Raj the ladies fall head over heels over. It was a tough choice for Anushka here! You’ve got an utter goofball spouting dirty lines and filmi dialogues vs a steady reliable lover who merits effort and respect (he basically is borderline Raj just older and not a poster boy image).

The idea of both films is great but the magic never really went full throttle.

And I’m not even critical of SRK here before the anti SRK ranters arrive (cue Z and Bob), but I’m purely critiquing Aditya here. You’ve got Big B, SRK, Aishwarya and half your script is blown on 3 romantic angles to convince Big B that his parampara is wrong. The end sequence alone with SRK telling him your the one remembering your dead daughter under her picture is enough to win this film’s ultimate battle.

Let’s hope Thugs doesn’t miss an opportunity but I’m betting Aditya will mess it up if he’s involved hugely!

In general YRF in 90’s and early 00’s were a big deal – you hear the opening credits and you expect a lot. But after 2002 when they become a factory the quality is intermittent and one can see the films where Aditya has a hand in the decline. If he has confidence in a director like Shimit Amin it goes well (CDI and Rocket Singh) but others not so much. He’s the boss though and lands up on power lists.

In Pakistan, the “deep state” remains undisturbed, in fact is happy whenever the elected parties are discredited (stated differently, while I have no true dog in the fight, as between a corrupt Nawaz and a military-ISI complex, I will back the former). Check this out, btw.

        • It’s certainly true that a certain cross-section of Indian liberalism is much too soft on everything that comes from Pakistan. This is even a paternalistic attitude at some levels. In any case they ignore many things across the border that they never would in India and that’s absurd. Being liberal does not mean that one has to be foolish about these things, just because ‘minorities’ are involved in India or Pakistanis across the border. Of course this is not a critique that the Right in India can make with any degree of credibility and for obvious reasons! I’d also say that in one sense the deepest admirers of Pakistan are on your side of the debate. Those who are always hankering to make India a mirror image of Pakistan. At the end of the day if one believes in a principle one must be willing to defend it in all contexts or argue against the opposite everywhere. Unfortunately people’s definitions of who the Right is or how good/bad the Left is seems to change rather easily depending on whether they’re living in India or Pakistan or the Mideast or the UK or the US. For instance many people who are offended by Trump’s talk are quite happy to be religious and ethnic bigots in other contexts. People who insist on the fullest democratic rights when they’re in the West don’t believe in a tenth as much in their native countries. I could go on about this. I’ve had these conversations in many contexts. One cannot protest selectively. Again I do agree with the criticism of liberals but when there’s no criticism of the other side in any context, even when the worst kind of violence happens, it’s a bit hard to take the debate seriously.

He will not face prison time, and will hold on to his allegedly ill-gotten wealth—he has only been forced to leave the office of the prime minister. After the court found that he had not satisfactorily accounted for his wealth, it invoked a vague and overbroad morality clause in the constitution that says leaders must be “truthful” and “trustworthy.” It’s the first time that the clause, introduced during the Islamizing military rule of General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, has been used against a holder of public office in Pakistan.”

At a mall in Peshawar, a group of men broke into a traditional dance against the backdrop of Pashto music. Sweets are thrust into the mouths of exultant opposition politicians as the cameras look on. Social media is aglow with young Pakistanis thrilled by the sight of a powerful politician brought low. But it is far from clear whether Sharif’s exit inaugurates an era of accountability and transparency in Pakistan, or the persistence of an age where corruption charges are selectively applied and only unelected and unaccountable institutions decide the fate of the country’s rulers.”

  3. Munna Micheal – Lipstick Under My Burkha – Dunkirk Week One Business
    Friday 28 July 2017 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Munna Micheal had a poor first week as it grossed 31 crore nett and the collections fell fast over the weekdays. The film did fair business on Sunday but that was it as it went down after. The single screen business of the film is better but even there its not at the level of a Baaghi which could take it somewhere. The film was never going to do well in the metros so it was about the multiplexes outside the metros and it was the failure to collect here which meant a bad result. The film is not adding much in week two and may just about crawl to 35 crore nett.

Lipstick Under My Burkha is done reasonable business in the first week of 10 crore nett but it had a strong trend with weekdays recording strong business. The film may actually turn out to be a surprise HIT depending on the business it does on day eight. There is a good chance that the eighth day business of the film is going to be better than Munna Micheal.

Dunkirk did pretty well over its first week as recorded business of 16.75 crore nett in week one. the film had a good weekend but could not really hold that well over the weekdays. The business is still not bad for a film released in English only but that appreciation is missing in the Indian market for the film to really sustain.

  4. Mubarakan Has Low Opening
    Friday 28 July 2017 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Mubarakan has taken a low opening of around 15-20% and its basically the same as Munna Micheal on an all India level but the demographics are slightly different and that gives it a better chance than Munna Micheal. The metro opening is practically ditto of Munna Micheal while single screens across the country are lower. But multiplexes outside the metros are better than Munna Micheal. So for example a single screen in a city like Agra is lower but a multiplex is higher and its this audience that forms a good chunk of the box office today. These multiplexes in places like Agra, Jaipur, Surat etc have potential to pick up but it is very important that it happens today. The families tend to come out on the weekend so collections will be better but you need a platform so that growth means something and thats why growth has to come today. More so as there are big films releasing from next Friday which will curtail business further.

The film could have probably have done without the sardaar element as it becomes a film catering to the North and this market needs big stars and you may be alienating other markets like Nizam and Maharashtra due to the very Punjabi content. So what happens is that in terms of opening the target audience does not come and others less interested. Still despite not opening, North should be best as the families come out but the question will be can it be big enough to take the film through.

The other film Indu Sarkar has opened very poorly but like last weeks Lipstick Under The Burkha it could grow depending on the word of mouth though costs are not as low as that film but opening is very similar.

Indira Gandhi has just 1 scene in the movie and Indu Sarkar is just ordinary girl and she is not worth to get a top billing! 😀

I’m seriously asking it. My comment is about the play of words by naming central character Indu Sarkar and then saying it is not about Indira’s sarkar(govt) – which is actually smart but blatantly obvious thing and actually ignoring the Maneka Gandhi who was very central character and just newly married to Sanjay Gandhi during Emergency.

Whereas Raees comparisons is nothing new.. goons/bad guys have always inspired film makers and its not like movies are made to glorifying or whitewash anyone(he’s not that big of name either). Even OUTIM portrayed Haji Mastan as Saint and Dawood as Evil personified. They all do it for their own movie narratives. Even if there is any whitewashing in Raees, I’m 200% it is more concerning that SRK playing the role and acceptance instead of a unknown small time criminal in Abdul Lateef. They can’t show SRK too negative and lose the film narrative and business.

  9. Children help create 1.3 crore litre water storage capacity
Shiladitya Pandit | TNN | 9 hours ago

PUNE: While children seemed most enthusiastic about the techniques used to conserve water, villagers competing in the past two editions of the Water Cup have managed to create 1,368 crore litre water-storage capacity, Paani Foundation announced at a news conference held in the city.
The foundation will hold this year’s competition awards ceremony at Balewadi Sports Complex on August 6. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with actor Aamir Khan and film director Kiran Rao, who initiated the foundation, will be present at ceremony.

“We focused on water conservation because of the importance of the issue in Maharashtra. There is a large area to work around here, especially given the drought situation in the state over the past couple of years,” says Satyajit Bhatkal, CEO of Paani Foundation.
At the first Water Cup, the foundation selected villages in three talukas in the state. Contestants were required to construct infrastructure for water conservation in their villages.

While the organization does not provide funds to the villages, it does impart technical knowledge through experts and online material, including a mobile application and a website. The villagers then use community labour and largely local material to construct the facility. Villages not part of the contest have also used the available online literature for water conservation projects, the foundation claimed.
A village in the Satara district was the inaugural winner of the Water Cup, receiving a grant of Rs50 lakh. This year, the contest was expanded, with villages from 30 talukas in the state applying for the competition. The organizers give away about Rs4 crore as prize money to the top three winners as well as the winner in each taluka. Between April and May, the villages had to build their facilities and were adjudged by a group of experts. The organizers are impressed with the community spirit and women empowerment initiatives that were visible thanks to the contest.

“I remember going to a village where women do not generally leave their houses due to social customs. Our team trained the villagers, including the husband of one of the women. He helped his wife get involved in the shramdaan to construct the facility.,” said Rao, who has cofounded the foundation.

The organizers stated that the per-capita income in some villages has increased because of water conservation efforts inspired by the contest.
“The children can use a hydrometer or look at and deduce from topographical maps. They have also participated to build check-dams and other infrastructure,” said Avinash Pol, the foundation’s project director.

  10. Taapsee Pannu and Rishi Kapoor to come together for Anubhav Sinha’s next Mulk
    ByBollywood Hungama News Network
    Jul 28, 2017 – 11:55 am IST

After starring with megastar Amitabh Bachchan in Pink, Taapsee Pannu will now star with another ace actor Rishi Kapoor in her next titled Mulk. Earlier we had reported that director-producer Anubhav Sinha is working on his next, a social thriller based on true life events. And now the film has been titled Mulk and it will go on floors in October.

Mulk will entail an interesting ensemble of actors including Rajat Kapur, Prateik Babbar besides Rishi Kapoor and Taapsee Pannu. The plot of the film revolves around the story of a joint family who hails from a small town in India, who are out to reclaim their honour after being embroiled in a controversy. The film will be shot in Varanasi and Lucknow and is scheduled to release early next year.

Anubhav Sinha, who has directed Dus and Cash in the past, will revisit the thriller genre after close to a decade with Mulk. Screenplay writer-producer Mushtaq Shiekh, who is known for his work in films like Om Shanti Om, Gulaab Gang, Ra One, will be the associate producer of Mulk. The film is jointly written by Anubhav Sinha and Mushtaq Shiekh

Anubhav Sinha, Founder of Benaras Media Works said, “I am doing a thriller after 10 years and this will be quite different from what I have attempted in the past. I’m returning to my roots after so many years. It’s my way of giving back to my hometown and it feels emotionally satisfactory. The plot of the film revolves around true life events. I am yet in the process of closing in on a few more actors.”

    Jul 28, 2017 – 4:29 pm IST

Sanjay Kapoor, actor and brother of Anil and Boney Kapoor, rarely acts in films nowadays. Hence, it was a pleasant surprise to know that the actor has done a special appearance in Anees Bazmee’s comic caper Mubarakan. This film incidentally stars not only his brother Anil but also his nephew and Boney Kapoor’s son Arjun Kapoor.

It would be wrong to reveal more about the film but what can be said is that he appears in two crucial scenes and he is a big reason why all the madness happens and he also helps solve the problem later on. The actor plays his part confidently and also induces laughter in a sequence that would be loved by audiences. This is also the first time that Sanjay will be sharing screen space with his brother Anil Kapoor.

The lesson of the last few decades that everyone has learned rather well is: you get attacked for wanting/having WMD….unless you ACTUALLY have them, in which case people have to come to the negotiating table. Hence Iraq, but not Iran nor North Korea nor Pakistan nor India nor Israel. So if the Middle-Eastern country had some nuclear capability, it likely wouldn’t happen to them. I say this as someone who believes in nuclear non-proliferation, and who believes that India’s own nuclear tests in 1998 were reckless and neutralized India’s strategic advantage over Pakistan, BUT as long as there is a club of (powerful) countries with nukes, others will want to enter the club, and it’s mendacious (of the so-called great powers) to pretend otherwise.

[If that wasn’t enough, Ranbir too spoke his heart out and said for Basu, “There is no AD system, no script, no schedule. He will cancel a 40-day shoot on the third day. Like when Barfi started, I was supposed to be intense and serious. He then wanted to make it fun and then all the Chaplin stuff came. Barfi was successful so we forgive that process (of delaying). If Jagga Jasoos doesn’t work, I don’t think this process can be forgiven because it is irresponsible for other people’s money, time and other things.”]

Revealed: Toilet — Ek Prem Katha is a remake of Joker
    DECCAN CHRONICLE.
    Published Jul 29, 2017, 12:05 am IST
    Updated Jul 29, 2017, 12:05 am IST
The film is inspired by the 2016 film Joker, which won the National award for best Tamil Film.

While all the focus has been on a documentary filmmaker’s copyright-infringement issues with the makers of Toilet — Ek Prem Katha, we’ve missed out something bigger. And that is the source and inspiration for this much-anticipated Akshay Kumar starrer.

The film is inspired by the 2016 film Joker, which won the National award for best Tamil Film. Directed by Raju Murugan, the film tells the story of an eccentric village do-gooder (Guru Somasundaram) who fights for the rights of the illiterate villagers, and also builds a toilet for his newly-wed wife. According to sources in the know, the producers of Toilet — Ek Prem Katha have paid a substantial amount to the makers of Joker and sworn them to secrecy.

“Although Toilet — Ek Prem Katha is only partly similar to Joker, the producers nevertheless paid up to ensure no copyright allegations cropped up again. The reason why this source of origin is being kept a secret is because any film that is even partially a remake is not eligible for a National award. The producers of Toilet Ek Prem Katha want to pitch the movie very strongly for the National awards,” says the well-informed source.

Ironically, Akshay had starred in a Hindi film titled Joker directed by Shirish Kunder. It was one of the biggest flops of the actor’s career.

  17. Mubarakan First Day Business
    Saturday 29 July 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Mubarakan had a low first day of around 5 crore nett as the film collected poorly all over. The better collections should have come in Delhi and Punjab due to the local content of the film but did not really happen. The cast factor affected the film here while in other areas the interest to watch a Punjabi type film is less. The film is probably bit better than the collections so there will be growth over the weekend. Also growth should come because the families come out on Saturday and Sunday but the problem is where do you go from the low start. It is understandable the youth has not come but the problem is mass has also not come.

The industry has continued its poor run since the release of Tubelight. It will said that the openings are not happening and audience not coming but that is just talk, its the theatricals which are not working be it Mom, Guest in London, Munna Micheal or Mubarakan. This film is actually not as bad as the theatrical suggested but the audience goes by the theatrical.

The other release of the week Indu Sarkar is a very poor fare as it collected around the 85 lakhs nett mark. The film will also grow over the weekend but again where can it go from such a low start. Last week Lipstick Under the Burkha managed to work but that was liked by its very small target audience. Here that does not look the case due and it will be a huge surprise if it goes the Lipstick Under The Burkha way.

    • 85 lakhs?? All the hullabaloo for Indu Sarkar didn’t help at all. As I said, its very small movie with hardly any buzz or interest. It couldn’t collect even as much as Lipstick which did over 1 crore(1.10 crs) on 1st day. Moreover the reviews are bad as well. If there was no news coverage or protests (fake or real), it would have come and gone like without any noise like recent Bhandarkar movies. Collection wise it looks the same.

  18. Holdovers – Munna Jagga Lipstick Etc
    Saturday 29 July 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Munna Micheal has crashed out in its second week with collections in the 35 lakh nett range. The drop is a huge 95% from the first day and its lifetime business will probably fall short of the 35 crore nett mark The film has fared poorly but has done better than the last Tiger Shroff film which collected less than 31 crore nett.

Munna Micheal had crossed the lifetime of A Flying Jatt in just one week. Tiger shroff who had started with two Hits in the form of Heropanti and Baaghi probably now needs reinvention and that too so early in his career. There were rumours of a big budget Rambo but if that film is still to be made then the economics will probably change.

Lipstick Under The Burkha has held well with around 75-80 lakhs nett on its eighth day which is a 25% odd drop from day one. Still the film could have held better as it has hardly got in any footfalls but the audience is limited for the film. It should cross the 20 crore nett mark for its lifetime business which is good commercially due to low costs but its not really going to find much of an audience.

Dunkirk also fell to the 75 lakh nett mark and is probably looking at a close of around 25 crore nett which is reasonable for a non dubbed English film but that appreciation is missing in India.

Jagga Jasoos stands at around 52 crore after 15 days and is probably looking at a lifetime close of around 54-55 crore nett.

Mom is at around 31 crore nett and will close at around 32-33 crore nett

Tubelight has closed at less than 115 crore nett.

Add Mubarakan and Indu Sarkar to this scenario and its been a horrible run since Eid and Jab harry met Sejal and Toliet Ek Prem Katha have to work for the industry to get some confidence back.

“Amit ji took a five-year break after doing Khuda Gawaah. He had gone to New York to live a normal life. I had gone there while shooting for Meherbaan. I met and told him, I was tired after working for 25 years in films, and wanted a break.

“Amit ji told me, ‘Never commit such a mistake in life. Never take a break (from films).’ I went back and immediately signed two new films. I have never taken a break in my 38-year-long career,” he added. Anil said that one of the greatest moments of his life was to “receive the coveted Oscar (for Slumdog Millionaire) on stage. All actors or directors across the world nurse a dream to receive an Oscar. I had a small role in the film. This feeling of joy shall remain in my heart till the end,” he said.

“Receiving the National Award for Pukaar was also a great moment for me. The film was quite underrated and it did not fare well because at that time Hrithik Roshan’s film Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai had become a big hit. 21. Mubarakan Shows Growth On Saturday
    Sunday 29 July 2017 01.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Mubarakan had good growth on Saturday of around 40-45% as it grossed around 7 crore nett which takes its two day business to 12 crore nett. The business of the film is still low and this growth was likely to come because of the very low numbers on Friday. There will also be growth on Sunday but it is not about that as no matter how far Sunday goes it is not going to be a good or even decent weekend. Also its target audience was always likely to come over the weekend. It will be Monday that will decide the fate of the film as even though the weekend will be poor, a strong hold on Monday and this film can still go somewhere. Even though the competition is big over the next few weeks.

The big problem is the film is not performing in North India although Saturday is better the numbers are not there. When a circuit like Gujarat gives same numbers as Punjab or Delhi city for a film with heavy North content it means that its not really happened for the film.

The North markets do hold very well after the weekend so it will be very important that Monday is equal or maybe even better than Friday. This will change the whole scenario for the film which does look very weak at the moment even with this good Saturday growth.

    Sunday 30 July 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Mubarakan showed good growth of 45% on Saturday though the collections still remain low. The film will grow again on Sunday but its basically down to Monday as the weekend collections can deceive with growth and then fall back on Monday. What the Saturday number does is keep the film in the running. The first two collections of the film are as follows

    Friday – 5,00,00,000

    Saturday – 7,25,00,000

    TOTAL – 12,25,00,000

Indu Sarkar is a poor fare with little appreciation as the film could not even grow as much as Mubarakan despite being more of a niche film. The film is not going to go anywhere at the box office but that is sort of expected as the film hardly looked interesting from trailers. The two day business of Indu Sarkar is as follows.

    Friday – 85,00,000

    Saturday – 1,05,00,000

    TOTAL – 1,90,00,000

Akshay Kumar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’s Lifetime Business Prediction
Trade analyst Rohit Jaiswal predicts the fate of this Akshay Kumar starrer at the box office

    By Koimoi.com Team -July 30, 2017

Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar starrer Toilet: Ek Prem Katha will release on 11th August. With the film releasing just a week after Jab Harry Met Sejal, let’s see what trade analyst, Rohit Jaiswal has to predict about the fate of this Akshay Kumar starrer at the box office.

Getting directly to the main point, Rohit predicts the lifetime collection of the film, “If the film is declared tax-free in all BJP ruling states then it has a chance of doing 120 crores else it’ll wind up around 95-100 crores,”

As the film releases a week after Shah Rukh Khan starrer JHMS, he adds, “Undoubtedly the content will be good but to crack open the box office, perfect release date matter. As we all know Jab Harry Met Sejal is releasing a week before, it’ll have good screen booking. Let’s assume if Jab Harry Met Sejal turns out to be good, exhibitors will be bound to continue it. All premium centres, then, cannot remove the SRK starrer and even plexes will have 50% shows for it.”

We also asked him about the screen space movie can expect to get, “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha might get around 2400-2500 screens but it won’t be able to get the 100% of premium centres. Even in multiplexes it’ll get 50% of shows as the rest will be with Shah Rukh Khan,”

He also considers the competition that’s been coming in its following week, “In its next week, on 18th August, we have so many films in Bareilly Ki Barfi, Haseena Parkar and Hollywood’s biggie Annable: Creation. This horror flick could prove to be the biggest threat for Toilet: Ek Prem Katha.”

What if word of mouth for Jab Harry Met Sejal is too bad? “If Jab Harry Met Sejal‘s word of mouth is worse than thought then the scenario will get changed favouring Toilet: Ek Prem Katha.”

Only time will tell how much this analysis and predictions are close enough to the real life situations.

Superstar Aamir Khan’s younger brother Faissal Khan, who is making a comeback with Sharique Minhaj’s tentatively titled film “Mental”, says it is a new-age movie.
“It is a new-age film; especially for the generation next who are madly obsessed with one-sided affair and who take wrong decisions which is very immoral,” Faissal said in statement.
This will be the third time Faissal and Minhaj will be seen working together after “Chand Bujh Gaya” and the Kashmir based “Chinar Daastaan-E-Ishq”.
“This film’s subject is different from the earlier two films we did together. It revolves around a one-sided love affair and the guy goes at all lengths to win his love. He even becomes mental too. I believe in quality rather than quantity. I listen to the script first before giving my nod. When Sharique narrated the script and my role, I eagerly accepted to do it.” Faissal added.
“Mental” will be shot in major shooting schedules from August at Surat, Daman, Saputara and Mumbai locales.
Talking about Faissal, Minhaj said: “Having worked with Faissal in two of my earlier films we share a good rapport. Faissal Khan fits in the character like a hand-in-glove. You could say it is a tailor-made role for him.”

  31. Rangan positive on Indu Sarkar:

“Indu Sarkar”… A surprisingly decent Bhandarkar drama, rooted in the politics (and cinema) of the 1970s

“It’s become something of an annual ritual to mock the Madhur Bhandarkar movie, but after watching Indu Sarkar, I wonder if his problem isn’t that he’d rather be making movies like we used to in the 1970s. Indu Sarkar – beautifully shot in browns by Keiko Nakahara (who also shot Mary Kom) – is essentially an Angry Young Woman movie, a masala version of something like Aandhi, which wasn’t so much a “political drama” as a drama that used politics as the backdrop for a personal story. It’s Indu vs the System, and instead of the textural complexities of Sudhir Mishra’s Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, which was also set in this period, we get a simple Davida vs Goliath narrative. “

Director Kalyan S’s team for “Gulebakavali” is trying to ensure that the film has at least some scenes spectacular enough to compare with “Bahubali”.

“Even if we get 10 to 15 minutes of footage that is comparable with ‘Bahubali’, we are happy,” Prabhudheva said, adding that “Bahubali” is a game-changer for costume dramas.

“The level of acceptability for the costume drama has changed. In ‘Gulebakavali’, we are spending close to three months on the special effects to make sure audiences don’t feel cheated,” he said.

Full of praise for Rajamouli, Prabhudheva added: “I’ve known him for years. He has always been a path-breaker. I did his ‘Rowdy Rathod’ in Hindi. I’d love to work with him in the near future.

  37. Mubarakan – Low Weekend But Huge Growth
    Monday 31 July 2017 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Mubarakan has had a low weekend of 22.50 crore nett but the growth over the weekend is extraordinary. The film has more than doubled its business of Friday on Sunday and that does just not happen for films of this genre and target audience. There have been films like Piku, Neerja, Pink, etc which have seen this type of growth but they have a totally different audience. If this film was like those then it can be said with eyes closed that Monday will hold up very well. Here the audience is different, there is no precedence and its been released on 1600 theatres compared to the Piku’s which were just around 800 theatres so doing less occupancy. Monday is crucial for the film and despite a very low weekend the film still has a chance if Monday holds strongly.

The killer for the film has been North India as both Delhi and Punjab have not really performed. The growth has come but collections are probably half what they should be. Comparatively Gujarat and Central markets are better. The first weekend collections of the film are as follows

    Friday – 5,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 7,25,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 10,25,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 22,50,00,000 apprx

Indu Sarkar had a poor weekend of 3.25 crore nett. It was less than the second weekend of last weeks content film Lipstick Under The Burkha. The weekend business of Indu Sarkar is as follows.

    Friday – 85,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 1,05,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 1,35,00,000 apprx

    Week One – 31,43,00,000

    Second Weekend – 1,50,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 32,93,00,000 apprx

Lipstick Under My Burkha has held well in its second weekend with a drop of around 35% but considering the trend of the first week it could have been better. It has grossed 13.75 crore nett so far and probably could do lifetime business of around 19-20 crore nett. The collections of Lipstick Under My Burkha till date are as follows

    Week One – 10,18,00,000

    Second Weekend – 3,50,00,000 apprx

It also had the best second weekend as compared to its competitors Munna Micheal and Lipstick Under The Burkha. The business of Dunkirk till date are as follows.

    Week One – 16,58,00,000

Its a small budget venture in those lines. Just because budget is low does not make it equal to an offbeat DG. Its a feel good children film for family audience like TZP.

  42. Tom Cruise’s The Mummy flopped so hard, it could lose up to $95 million. That’s Rs 600 crore
Tom Cruise’s The Mummy could lose up to $95 million (Rs 600 crore) for Universal Pictures, a Deadline report says. It was one of the worst reviewed films of the action star’s career.

    hollywood Updated: Jul 31, 2017 17:10 IST
    HT Correspondent

Despite scoring the biggest debut of Tom Cruise’s career, The Mummy stands to lose $95 million (more than Rs 600 crore).

The Mummy opened to $169 million worldwide, and some of the worst reviews of Cruise’s career on June 9. According to Deadline, the film’s total production cost (including advertising) is $345 million. To break even, the film would have needed to make approximately double that at the box office. However, it’s current gross – at the end of its theatrical run – stands at $395 million.

“Total revenue for Mummy across all streams including theatrical rental, net global TV and home entertainment is estimated at $250 million,” per Deadline sources.

“Subtract $345 million costs from $250 million total monies, and Mummy loses $95 million. Breaking down Mummy‘s revenue, theatrical global rentals are figured at $146 million, domestic pay/network TV net at $17 million, global home entertainment net at $52 million (versus Rogue Nation‘s $84 million net), and foreign TV net at $35 million (vs. Rogue Nation‘s $74 million),” th e report continues, comparing The Mummy with Cruise’s sixth Mission Impossible movie.

The Mummy is intended to launch a series of connected films featuring classic Universal Monsters like Dracula, Wolf Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon, but the film’s terrible reviews – 16% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes – didn’t make for an auspicious start.

Throw in Eid too plus this release schedule it had plenty of time to make up lost ground from competition. Same for both JHMS and TEPK.

  45. BREAKING: Shraddha Kapoor’s Haseena Parkar gets postponed again
    BySubhash K. Jha
    Aug 1, 2017 – 10:07 am IST

Rather than face rejection at the box office, director Apoorva Lakhia and his team have decided to postpone the release of Haseena Parkar…yet again.

This is the fourth time that the release date has been postponed. The most recent date fixed for release was August 18. The date has been further moved forward.

Explains director Apoorva Lakhia, “There is no point in trying to get into the current clutter of releases. We all can see what is happening to all the films that are coming out. If we came on 18 August we would have Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Harry Met Sejal and Akshay Kumar’s Toilet Ek Katha behind us. Akshay’s film has tax exemption. Why should we do something as suicidal as to release our film at a time when the competition is not only tough but it is impossible to cope with?”

Mubarakan had a low Monday of 3.50-3.75 crore nett and took its four day total to 26 crore nett. The film has held well enough with a drop of 25-30% from its first day but that is not good enough as that first day was weak. The film had to be at 4 crore nett plus as a minimum and really should have been close to day one if it was sustain well with the big competition of Jab harry Met Sejal and Toilet Ek Prem Katha in from of it. These Monday collections should see the film close the week out with steady low collections and a 35 crore nett apprx first week but that is not good enough. The first four day collections of the film are as follows

    Friday – 5,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 7,25,00,000 apprx

    Sunday – 10,25,00,000 apprx

        • It makes me realize how great would have been if TEPK had stuck to real storyline where actually Bhumi’s character does the revolution in the village and then make Ayushman play Akshay’s role. It would have been far more hard hitting and better movie. But I guess there are perks of a star doing the movie as more people will watch it at least during the 1st weekend and possible overall. But if well made, even a small hit at 50 crores there will be huge TV reruns and that will also help the message to spread across well.

        • what you say is true..TEPK has too much of an urban feel for their character’s houses to be lacking toilets! It needed a much more interior set up..similar to where these kind of protests by new brides for toilets actually took place..and was in the news.

If akshay wanted to really play this character he cud have played such a villager also..what is the problem!

Same thing happened with SRK’s billu barber also.. The original in Malayalm showed a location much smaller..a real village centre where there were only a couple of shops and his barber shop was one of a kind. In hindi they picturised it in a much bigger town and so lost a lot of authenticity that came with it.

        • “It needed a much more interior set up..similar to where these kind of protests by new brides for toilets actually took place..and was in the news.”

That IS the point. It was a story about brides/women revolting and it should have been the case for the women folk to connect better. You can’t make a HERO story in every story and subject. It would have been better for women to do this self-realization than again depending on the men folks to start this discussion about toilets as in the movie.

Either ways it is made now, lets hope at least the movie turns out better though the hype has died down as the theatrical promo came too early and nothing interesting after that.

  47. A scathing piece on Saif Ali Khan’s letter defending “nepotism” through absurd terminology like “eugenics” :

    THE BLOG
Saif Ali Khan’s Views On Nepotism Are Even Darker Than They Appear
    A Nawab’s insane delusions.
    01/08/2017 8:37 AM IST |

    Bhaskar Chawla Writer, screenwriter

If there is a future in which Bollywood’s blatant and rampant nepotism has vanished, a certain open letter by Saif Ali Khan might be seen as a key moment in the debate, primarily because it was crazy.

While Karan Johar had also put forward some bizarre explanations in defence of nepotism, Saif Ali Khan’s open letter makes those seem very lucid. In fact, it is very hard not to think that Khan was venting his frustration with the little people for daring to mock a Nawab.

Not only does Khan’s open letter hint at some very problematic and feudal beliefs, it is also full of factual errors so grave that they’re almost delusions, as well as ridiculous contradictions.

The “genetics” argument may seem only mildly offensive if an ordinary person said it, but the fact that a Nawab… is saying it, makes it a lot darker.
First and foremost is the contradiction in writing an open letter and stating that the matter was closed once he apologised to Kangana. Signing off a long-winded explanation with the quote “never complain and never explain” also had us scratching our heads. But let’s not focus on such trifles when there’s a feast to be had.

The first nepotism-related thing Khan said in his letter had to do with his usage of the word “eugenics” in a clarification about the IIFA incident. Khan tells us that eugenics means “well-born,” which it doesn’t. Eugenics, according to the dictionary, means “the science of improving a population by controlled breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristics.” The word is merely derived from the Greek word “eugenes,” which means well-born. Khan then clarifies that “genes” are not the blue trousers we wear, which finally explains how he thought that Humshakals was worth doing.

In a nutshell, using an analogy involving race horses, the Nawab tells us that genes matter, as producers cast sons and daughters of actors with the belief that they too, will be actors. Then, in a clarification about an apology for insulting a woman not as privileged him, he insults a woman not as privileged as him, i.e., the journalist at Elle who wrote an article about his original “eugenics” comment. The insult is directed at her vocabulary for thinking that eugenics has nothing to do with nepotism. It comes in the very paragraph after he got the meaning of eugenics wrong. Again.

This is where problems bigger than contradictions begin. What exactly does Saif Ali Khan want to say? That children of actors are also likely to be good actors, because it is in their genes? Then how exactly does that justify Salman Khan, the son of a writer, and Aamir Khan, the son of a director-producer being launched as actors? The “genetics” argument may seem only mildly offensive if an ordinary person said it, but the fact that a Nawab, a man with “royal blood” in his veins is saying it, makes it a lot darker.

Let’s just use the exact same line of reasoning he used in different contexts. As Kangana Ranaut already said in a very eloquent and dignified response, if it were all about the genes, she would’ve been a farmer. By Khan’s logic, the child of a shoemaker is also inherently blessed with shoemaking skills, and should be a shoemaker? The child of a tanner would have tanning in her DNA, and should automatically be a tanner?

If this sounds like a very dark idea, it’s because it probably reminds you of the caste system, which divided society into different sections based on everyone’s profession. While this may seem harmless to those in the most lucrative professions, like Saif Ali Khan, it may not be an appealing prospect for those who aren’t—just like the caste system is just peachy for upper castes and not so much for the rest. Khan’s idea also seems eerily reminiscent of the “divine right to rule,” which was believed to be with kings (like his ancestors) for centuries.

But this isn’t the only dark thing about this. If we accept Khan’s hypothesis, we could also justify prejudice against children of criminals. Is being a criminal—a murderer, rapist, or thief—in someone’s genes? If it is right to invest in children of talented individuals simply based on their genes, it should also be fine to invest in protecting society from people who carry the genes of criminals?

A very dark thought, isn’t it? I would be surprised if Saif Ali Khan actually believed this, so it simply comes down to this: his argument, his reasoning, is completely flawed. This, along with some startling misconceptions, and more contradictions, lead us to the next part of his letter.

Khan blames the media for nepotism, by saying that it is they who create hype around star kids from a very early age. While in the age of social media, this may seem like a very valid point, it is not. Facebook and Twitter have only been around for a decade or so. Before the Internet age, the coverage film stars got was a fraction of what it is today, and was limited to television and print. Khan himself, along with dozens of other star kids, like Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Twinkle Khanna, Akshaye Khanna, Abhishek Bachchan, Fardeen Khan, Zayed Khan, Esha Deol, Tusshar Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan and virtually all members of Prithviraj Kapoor’s family were launched in that era. Also, no offence to Suniel Shetty, Shakti Kapoor, or Aditya Pancholi, but they’re hardly Bollywood royalty, and I wonder what media hype surrounded their children that forced celebrity status on them.

What happens to Khan’s hypothesis now? Irrefutable empirical evidence is staring at him in the face, once again, proving him utterly, hopelessly wrong.

Saif Ali Khan then proceeds to say that nepotism is probably least prevalent in the film industry, implying that among ALL other industries, the film business is most free of nepotism! This is a laughable assumption, and I’m guessing Khan is not a betting man, simply because even if there is a single industry that is less nepotistic, he is proven wrong. Medicine, law, technology, education, journalism, science, and pretty much ANY field which requires educational qualifications to succeed is less nepotistic than the film industry.

Khan already seems like a buffoon at this point, so we’re going to let his red herring argument of mentioning nepotism in politics and business to deviate attention from nepotism in Bollywood go.

Instead, we’re going to focus on his delusions, which are of many varieties, including grandeur. Khan calls Bollywood part “aristocracy,” which he defines as “rule of the best.” A Google search would reveal that it means “rule of nobility,” i.e. a feudal system, the most apt way to describe Bollywood (I wonder whose hemline Khan’s head is stuck in, given how weak his vocabulary is). But the fact that Khan thinks that it means “rule of the best” makes us wonder if he’s missing the old days in which his title of Nawab wouldn’t just be an honorary one.

He then says that Bollywood is a meritocracy as well, as it is ruled by the most talented. While suppressing laughter as I think of Salman Khan, I wonder why the most “talented” are different from the “best” in Saif’s unique brain, and how this talent gives us films like Bullett Raja, Agent Vinod, Tevar, Besharam, Roy, Kick, Bodyguard, Happy New Year, Raees etc year after year. But I am immediately distracted by how he calls the industry, which is a business run for profit, a “democracy” as well. Who is eligible to vote in this democracy is a mystery Khan never solves for us little people but, if I’m eligible, I want to know the procedure for voting Tiger Shroff out.

Khan also throws in a gem like “the film industry is the most fair line of work.” I’m unsure whether he wants to convince the readers of this lie or just himself, since he’s talking about an industry notorious for sexism, a humongous wage gap, rampant plagiarism, having no transparency in measuring box office numbers, and having been financed by the underworld for several decades.

Now, we arrive at the part where Khan becomes Jon Snow by knowing absolutely nothing. He claims that for every star kid, there are many stars from non-film families, implying a ratio in favour of the latter. As examples, he names four outsiders who became stars while saying that the list is endless, but does not name a single star kid for contrast, probably because this list is indeed endless. Then, he says that Bollywood is the only industry in which a spot boy can become a star, without giving us any examples of spot boys who became stars, or examples of other industries where no spot boys have ever become stars.

Khan then proceeds to defend Arjun Kapoor, son of Boney Kapoor, nephew of Anil Kapoor, and cousin of Sonam Kapoor, by calling him an “unlikely” hero, and saying that every film Kapoor has been in has “worked.” I assume that he means at the box office, in which case I’d like to ask him what got Abhishek Bachchan a 16th film after the first 15 didn’t “work.” Actually, I’d also like to ask Khan what he, himself is doing in the industry, given that the films that “worked” in the first decade of his career could be counted on my right hand, and those that “worked” without Akshay Kumar on Jaime Lannister’s right hand. I also wonder whether he’d call Being Cyrus and Omkara films that didn’t “work.”

My only suggestion to Saif Ali Khan is that he should hire a better PR team. One that has PR in their genes.

Jagga Jasoos is looking to fold up at a little under 54 crore nett with its business standing at around 53 crore nett after 18 days. The film is a big flop and the losses are similar to Mohenjo Daro. This was always in the cards when the first theatrical came with the main lead not uttering a word. You may have got away with it Barfi! but that was less than half the cost. That film may have found a decent audience at the theatres but just a look at what happened to that film post release with disaster results on television would have shown limited appreciation and an impossible task to recover well over 100 crore. The business of Jagga Jasoos till date is as follows.

    Week One – 43,12,00,000

    Second Week – 8,57,00,000

    Third Week – 1,20,00,000 (4 days)

    TOTAL – 52,89,00,000

The Overseas business will be around $3 million which will mean a final worldwide gross of less than 100 crore at around 90 crore. Mohenjo Daro managed to cross 100 crore worldwide due to better numbers in Overseas markets.

    August 2, 2017

The year 2017 is proving to become a rather interesting one for the much-adored actor of Bollywood, Irrfan Khan. Starting this year with a much talked about show on Netflix produced by a Japanese-Canadian production was Tokyo Trials which soon became a must watch for everyone in the digital world.

Soon came the roaring success of Hindi Medium, one of the only successful films so far of the ongoing year proving the thought of Irrfan to always be a part of the good content. Now the actor has recently wrapped up the shooting of his next Hollywood project and is back in India to begin shooting of his next much exciting project.

The project in question was in news a little while ago. While much was speculated, it’s now official that the actor is joining hands with the media honcho, Ronnie Screwvala for a brand new project under the banner of RSVP, Ronnie’s new film production venture. The film is currently untitled and will have Irrfan and another leading actor paired with him in the film.

Set to be directed by Akarsh Khurana the film tells the tale of three characters from different walks of life who thrown together on a somewhat bizarre journey which helps them find some normalcy in their lives. Keeping up with his trend to always take on rather interesting characters, Irrfan will essay the character of a conservative yet quirky, simple and opinionated lover of Urdu poetry. We hear he will continue to delight the audiences with his unique sense of comic timing, something which has made him rather beloved.

The shoot of the film is all set to begin at the end of this month after Irrfan returns from the world premiere of Anup Singh’s The Song of Scorpions at the Locarno Film Festival.

  53. Babumoshaai Bandookbaaz faces censor trouble with 48 cuts along with ‘A’ certificate
    ByBollywood Hungama News Network
    Aug 2, 2017 – 11:15 am IST

The censor trouble for ‘A’ rated films continues to haunt them and yet another film in the CBFC radar is Babumoshai Bandookbaaz. The film that features Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the role of a shooter has been condemned by the CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani for its abusive language and sexually explicit scenes besides the fact that it has been given an Adult only certification. Not ending that, the producer of the film Kiran Shroff has opened up about the inappropriate gender discriminative remarks being passed at her by the CBFC members.

Talking about the same, Kiran Shroff revealed that when she approached the CBFC members over the certification of the film, one of them questioned ‘how she can make a film with so many abuses’. But before she could respond to the same, yet another male CBFC member retorted if she is a woman, further commenting on her attire saying she hasn’t dressed like one. Taken aback by the regressive statement, Kushan Nandy, the director of the film stated that such treatment towards a female producer is unpardonable.

On the other hand, speaking about the certification, when Kushan approached Pahlaj Nihalani on the same, the latter threatened that he should be glad that he is not banning the film. Further, when Kushan questioned on the grounds he would be taking such a drastic step, Pahlaj held the explicit abusive words used in the film as the reason behind recommending so many cuts in the film. Words like ‘Maa Ka Lehenga’ was asked to change to ‘Maa Ka Aanchal’ stated Kushan who was quite upset about losing the rustic appeal of the film due to these recommendations.

Taking some major action against this, the Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association have come out in support of Babumoshai Bandookbaaz and have written a letter to the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani about the alleged humiliation of producer Kiran Shroff. Also, the makers have reached out to Film Certification Appellate Tribunal for the revision of these cuts. While Pahlaj Nihalani has refused to comment on the matter, IFTDA member Ashoke Pandit has condemned CBFC’s behaviour and has promised to expose the kind of members that Pahlaj Nihalani has hired for the committee.

It looks a very safe film and one the core audience will warm too unless the film is a complete cock up. 20 CR + opening and weekend of close to 70 CR is a good base. If the Monday number is double digit – I think it can go 150 CR + with ease. 15 years ago this would be a bankable performer.

I wouldn’t rule out 200 CR, which can challenge SRK’s own biggest grosser potentially. The corporate bookings for SRK films always skew his opening figures so the acid test is Monday.

  55. When asked during a Facebook live interaction with fans if a remake of the Amitabh-Jaya-starrer should be made, Abhishek said, “Abhimaan is a very extraordinary movie. From all the movies that my mom and dad have done, this one is my favourite but to make a remake out of it will be very difficult.”

“Recently, there was some talk that a remake of the movie should be made with Aishwarya and I. But we both thought that it was such a good movie, that we shouldn’t touch it. Certain films, should just be left alone. You can’t remake them. There is a magic about them that should be left untouched. So, as of now, nothing is in the pipeline,” he added.

One of the highly anticipated films of the year is Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif‘s action drama Tiger Zinda Hai which is bringing this on-screen pair together after five years. After Ek Tha Tiger in 2012, the sequel has been shot on a bigger scale.

Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan recently completed their Morocco schedule just a week ago where they shot some intense action sequences. Now, we have learned that the climax of the film will be shot in Abu Dhabi. After the promotional shoot of Bigg Boss 11, Salman Khan is said to leave for Abu Dhabi by August 6 or 7 to begin the final schedule. The cast and crew will be shooting some important scenes on a huge canvas. Previously, they had filmed certain portions in Abu Dhabi. Now, they will be returning to the same place for final schedule.

Thanks for the update Sanjana. ….totally forgot about this movie. Have been a bit tied up with things lately hence less commenting …….though I have a very busy head, I have inside voices that I have learned to contain.

Looking forward to music of this film and hope VS have come up with a modern, scintillating track…somewhat like ETT. Pritam is too busy and unable to produce anything worthwhile except for the two tracks in Dangal which stood out.

  59. Extraordinary – PSG are triggering Neymar’s 222 MM EURO release clause. He’s signing it seems. Barcelona will fight for all money upfront and financial fair play regulations – the latter is pointless as clearly player wants to leave.

The circulation of money is insanely off putting. ÂŁ200mm is more than double Paul Pogba last summer.

Yes nice promo… this once again on my watchlist. Though Golmal series is unmissable after a brilliant G3.

I revisited Dangal and must say due to expectations did not like it much the first time around but 2nd watch was enthralling esp the background score is so freakin moving…..!!

Aamir was brilliant in his act esp the last smile to his daughter after she had won the gold medal. I don’t know how people say ranbir is better than Aamir…..there is simply no comparison in terms of the the depth and understanding a scene.

This is an underwhelming report if it turns out true ! There is a huge spillover audience from Tubelight holding their wallets and JHMS may tap into that if the movie does not turn out gross / offensive to the family audience. As per my ‘personal estimation’ movie will be doing at least a 70 cr weekend. Monday onwards content will talk. But Akki’s movie is going to suffer big time with this release strategy of RCE.
