I think simba will do very well in mumbai and surroundings regardless of how the film is.

Until Bharat comes, there wont be anything big on the scene.
    And even Bharat looks thanda.
Simba has a wrong hero and Zero has stale leads.who will be interested in anushka and Kat?
So let us celebrate the success of 2.0 because we wont see this kind of success for a long time to come.

        • You are not understanding my point. Any success is a fluke which has potential to be a failure too. The success of a film depends on the fickleness of the audience. Thats why no director can say that his film will be a great success. And word of mouth also works. If a bad film gets good wom by fluke, it will become successful.

I am a total vegetarian and no drinks except water.

RTGM was a huge success while a much better MNJ was a big flop. there are many examples like that.

        • A star or even a mega star like Rajni or Bachan will not be enough for a film to work on his own. Script, content or visuals may turn out to be essential factors for a film to work.

If I say Dangal or 3 Idiots do not owe their success to Asmir but rather to the script or content, then I am being unfair to Aamir. The films may have worked with other stars but Aamir’s presence ensured them the exposure and limelight needed to.be a blockbuster. His performance as an actor did the rest of the work. He also gets credit for having made the right choices.

In the same way, Akshay gets the credit for helping the film to the massive release in the Hindi version.

The VFX and content did the rest. Look at Rajni’s and Shankar’s recent record here. Endhiran had great VFX, I (with Vikram) was quite good but they didnt do great in hindi.

It’s a package where the star and the essential elements of the film need to work. When it works, the star gets the deserved credit.

        • Here the case is different. Akshay’s name must have given it a big boost for the north Indian audience. Otherwise the role does not require a superstar. The film gained in terms of boxoffice but it did not gain anything otherwise.

Did Baahubali 2 had any north indian star to give it a boost?

Why do you think that 2.0 would not have worked after a while? Its attraction is mainly 3D. Akshay is incidental.

Without aamir Baazigar and Darr worked. Some films work without some actors and some will not. This bird man part is different. It is the overdose of vfx which is catching the attention of the audience. While Airlift made people sit up and take notice of Akshay as an actor, here people are sitting up and taking notice of the vfx. That is the difference.

The film has defied all BO norms and rules. It has transcended cultural, linguistic barriers and the star system. We will have to wait for years and years until we see something similar in India.

If Baahubali is.made the benchmark then every other film’s achievements run the risk of being under-estimated.

        • It’s Akshay Kumar and the visuals just like it was Aamir, script and content for Dangal. These different elements of film making work together. When the package is right, the film works.

The film works with combination of these good things.

We are going in circles here. I give up.

        • Aamir in Dangal is not an apt comparison. Your love for akshay is making you go for this kind of comparison. Dangal is all aamir from beginning to end while the girls were supporting cast.
akshay has a very little role in comparison and dont forget the lead is Rajni who is known allover India.
You cannot compare script with 3D.
And you are not answering my question. If akshay is important why audience are preferring 3D to 2D? Akshay is not disappearing in 2D. Does he?
If boi is using BB2 in all its comments why cant it be used here too? It is not a holy cow. Its success does not take away its essence as a film in discussions.

          Like

        • Ok. We give it to Rajni who is the lead, and who is known all over the world as you say. He is a mega star in Bollywood. And the VFX. I guess the next time a Tamil film with Rajni and VFX is released, it will be another huge grosser in Hindi just as several previous such ventures have been in the past. Robot part 1 created havoc in Hindi, didn’t it?

Maybe they should have cast Rajni in Thugs instead of Amitabh. The VFX and him would have ensured a hit.

I give up. It’s my last post on the matter. Really going in circles here. I am on way for Fantastic Beasts 2 now. Have a fine evening.

  12. I like it! Perhaps not Devgan, who always looks pissed for some reason or another.

But Ranveer, this guy can act. Plus, this is the character arc that Firangi Mallah should have followed in ToH.

It’s a standard masala template. The only difference being, this time around they’ve taken a proper actor in the lead role.

    • it looks like a rehash of Zanzeer, Dabangg and singham. stale formula. why will aamir go for such stale formula even for success? Firangi is different. He is a vagabond.

      Like

      • Notice how in this trailer itself, Ranveer’s character is a mirror image of Firangi Mallah’s. Initially, at least. Completely amoral and faithful just to himself.

Then some kind of shit happens and he’s transformed into a proper heroic figure. That’s the character arc I was talking about.

The masala tropes are loosely tied here to #MeToo, or maybe it’s just fortuitous, but that makes it relevant for sure.

        • Completely agree. I loved watching Dabangg at the time of its release. It also had some pretty good dialogues as well.

Don’t think Simmba is coming anywhere close to it. But Ranveer in a masala role is probably worth watching just for that reason alone.

The guy could be crazy off screen, but on screen he can act. The same as Kangana, although she’s probably more out there than Ranveer.

    • This looks so tacky and terrible…time and again I wonder why director are not trying to make masala actioners more in the mould of Ghajini, intense with a strong emotional core. Wasn’t it the first 100 crore grosser or something? A film like that would break records in any time period/era.

      Like

      • I have watched Ghajini numerous times but many scenes still choke me up. Actually emotions are universal and work everywhere – even in Hollywood, the huge success of “A star is born”is a great example.

This is also why I feel Bahubali will not be easily surpassed – even though the special effects were subpar at times, it did not matter because the core story was so moving and had moments of real ‘loss’ which is hard to find in bollywood nowadays.

Come to think of it, has any SRK fan ever spoken ill of any of his disasters? Ra.one, HNY, Dilwale & JHMS? Have they even written a single sentence criticising these films?

But we saw multiple articles being posted about ToH’s debacle. And now the same crowd finds this trailer unpalatable. Oh, the irony!

I saw all the four films in theatre. I really liked Ra.One till the climax, which spoiled the fun. But the first 2 hours was breezy with great songs and fun. HNY was fun too and true to what it promised. Both were time pass movies.

However Dilwale and JHMS was pakaaoo films. Both the directors- Rohit Shetty and Imtiaz Ali chose SRK to give their worst movie.

‘Back from JHMS. Won’t write much. Imtiaz Ali’s weakest film till date. Though will also say that critics are way too harsh, it is just fine a regular romantic movie but not deep enough as other Imtiaz’s movies. Full songs are just 3-4 and rest of them are just 1 to 1.5 mins long in background. That is nothing to worry and doesn’t impact the narrative. SRK is fine though I wish the commoner character of guide was part of a better film and he’s the only thing you carry out of the movie, nothing else. Anushka does well(esp with accent) but her character is not as well written as Srk’s. It is worth a watch for those who like slow romantic paced movies, it is not commercial or entertaining enough. Overall will wrap at 75 crores.’
‘To re-iterate there is nothing in the movie which audience can’t tolerate or feel to walk out. It is not annoying or unbearable at any stage.. it is just that its too simple movie for SRK and Imtiaz Ali and not deep enough. So, it has nothing new but it is not the worst film on planet. Many of the folks in my show ended up liking it and at least no one’s hating it as much as online.’

Even Aamir fans loved his performance and that love blinds the flaws in story. But for some inspite liking Aamir performance I could find huge gaps in movie.

As Jay pointed out, you hardly know anything outside your little circle, you don’t even know last release, JHMS reviews from SRK fans on this blog let alone Dilwale and that too trailer review which is years back.

Lets take Z (who liked trailer), Krish (who liked trailer) and myself (no comments yet). What SRK fans you talking about it? Jhoot ki bhi had hoti hai.. you just trying to garb your hatred in any comments or movie thread to just point out SRK fans.

Is this criticism or is it a defense? I wish Aamir fans like Jay were as harsh on ToH as you were on JHMS. Forget the kind of comments I made on ToH.

Firstly which SRK fans are you talking about?

The ones who have responded to my post, hurt and aggrieved.

Secondly, if anyone comments the trailer is bad.. then they ought to say Dilwale trailer is bad also(which is 3 years back) or else their comment is not valid?

Read again. Not Dilwale’s trailer, but the film. Did you or anyone else speak out against Dilwale? The director for Dilwale and Simmba is the same. Funnily though, not many SRK fans were acting as connoisseurs of cinema during or after Dilwale’s release.

        And here’s a sample from Z:

On 2nd viewing, this looks horrible.

SRK should release a new song trailer right away.

As far as I can tell, Krish didn’t respond to my cryptic post in a hurt or aggrieved manner, which implies he isn’t the one it was intended for.

you just trying to garb your hatred in any comments or movie thread to just point out SRK fans.

Like I was termed a hater for posting negative reviews of HNY (can pull up comments if required) — a horrible film by any stretch of the imagination. But hey, when you or your cohorts post the most obscure links to malign ToH, that’s fair game!

  25. There was no reason to bring reference to Singham in the first trailer. Ranveer Singh is a BIG star now and doesn’t need support of Devgn. These gimmicks of having Salman in a SRK movie or Devgn in a Ranveer movie doesn’t work anymore. In fact it gives a message that the movie is not serious.
The trailer works for me if I ignore this gimmick. Ranveer is looking fab in his moustache. This role is more difficult than a Singham or Dabangg. It is more in the Rowdy Rathore mode, where the hero has shades in his character from Chor types to serious police stuffs.

For those still wondering why we say this, well back in 2010 in the run up to the release of Golmaal 3, the lead cast of the film were seen in various promotional materials holding out three fingers to denote the third instalment of the franchise. Similarly earlier this year, while announcing Golmaal 4 the cast of the film yet again featured the same pose, but this time holding out four fingers. Interestingly, in the music ‘Aankh Marey’ video the four members of Golmaal who are introduced with Tusshar recreating the score in his voice from the Golmaal franchise, are seen holding out five fingers! Now, this is just too obvious to be a coincidence, and begets the question whether the music video does in fact hide an announcement of Golmaal 5.

  40. Rohit Shetty has gone full meta with this one. The film is an off-shoot of Singham and also features cast from the Golmaal series. He’s not just winking at the audience, he’s pretty much waving his hands and shaking his body to make sure everyone gets it. What’s missing? Abhishek Bachchan shaking a leg to Bol Bachchan!

Pity that the cinematic moments he is referencing are not worth much at all. I told Jay it’s not coming anywhere close to Dabangg and this song proves it. It’s not horrible — the leads are ok, but surely a song could be more imaginative than paying respect to strictly mediocre stuff.

  41. 27.5 million views for the song in 24 hours!

For comparison, Zero’s song featuring both SRK & Salman has had 27 million views AFTER 3 days!

    • I am not surprised and this has been happening for some time now.

I think most of us here are not in the age bracket that understands the following of stars like Varun, Ranveer and Ranbir. They are huge numbers.

You ask any older teenager, boys or girls…most of their favourites will range from Varun, Ranbir, Ranveer, Karthik Aryan, etc.

      The S. H. I. F. T. has already begun.

  42. It has to happen. I mean the shift. The older heroes cant romance young girls anymore convincingly. It looks awkward. They should do age appropriate roles which will be much more appreciated.

    • It is not a question of whether it has to happen. The old has to give way to the new: Nobody’s denying that.

A tectonic shift isn’t always a qualitative shift. I am talking of the quality of star-actors; of how from Dilip to Amitabh to SRK and Aamir has deteriorated. Perhaps only DILIP = AMITABH equation can stand any test of time. Rest all, as agreed by the triumvirate themselves, cannot be compared.

Coming to this generation, one can make out so easily the lack of versatility of the actors to fit in different shoes;characters that infuse masala, that elevate poignancy, that reflecting seething anger, etc., etc.

  43. Further the requirement of audience changes with times. There is this generation gap. What was good during those times will not work to the same extent now.

Quality work is somewhat subjective notion though there is some basic premise for that. But after that one may like the work of a Sanjeev Kumar more. Nutan’s more than Nargis’s. Rani’s more than Kajol’s. Manoj Bajpayee’s more than Aamir’s. Some maybe bigger stars but at the end of it they are all actors and heroes of their respective films.

  46. Box Office Prediction: Simmba expected to open around 20 crore mark

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, Dec 27, 2018 – 8:35 am IST

Simmba is set for release tomorrow and so far things are falling in place for the film. Rohit Shetty is the Number One director today when it comes to delivering hits in a consistent manner. He is a knack for hitting centuries film after film and has the maximum count of 100 Crore Club successes to his name. He rules from the top with as many as 7 films going past the 100 crore mark whereas Sanjay Leela Bhansali comes second with three centuries.

Incidentally, each of these 100 Crore Club entries by Bhansali features Ranveer Singh in the lead role [Ram Leela, Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat]. Considering the fact that Ranveer is the hottest young superstar around, his presence in Simmba makes the film further hot. The film has seen four weeks of active promotion though in this limited duration itself it has managed to make a good impression, especially with the song ‘Aankh Maare’ turning out to be a massive chartbuster. Moreover, the action-masala-drama genre further makes the film rather safe.

It was earlier felt that the film would face competition from Simmba. However with the Shah Rukh Khan starrer not doing well, the ground is wide open for Simmba to go ahead and make merry. The film is not seeing a conventional holiday around it though the festive season should ensure better footfalls when compared to any other regular week of the year. Simmba should especially see a very good opening at the single screens of the B and C centers. However if multiplexes at the A centers also warm up to the film then sky would be the limit for it.

As things stand today, the film is seeing an opening of around 20 crore at the Box Office. Earlier this year action films like Baaghi 2 [25.10 crore] and Satyameva Jayate [20.52 crore] have taken massive opening and hence with names like Rohit Shetty and Ranveer Singh coming together, one just looks forward to another superb start for an action entertainer.

    • As Ranveer Singh starrer Simmba is about to hit the screens, it is the song ‘Aankh Marey’ that is breaking charts and getting people to groove to its peppy beats. And if you thought that it’s just desi people who have discovered their love for this new version of the old song featuring Sara Ali Khan, then you’re highly mistaken. In fact, now Bollywood fans around the globe have been going gaga and some of them in the US danced their heart out at Times Square, New York!

Yes, in a flash mob, dancers of Bollywood Axion NYC got together in the iconic place and re-acted the whole song and surprised passersby with their quirky steps and enthusiasm. The video was also shared by Reliance Entertainment on social media and garnered a lot of attention online.

  47. Simmba Has Good Advance Booking
    Thursday 27 December 2018 17.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Simmba is looking set for a strong opening as it has good advance booking especially in Mumbai and Central India markets. If we compare with Zero then the advance overall is much less but that is a Shahrukh Khan starrer and this is Ranveer Singh so there is a big difference there.

Also the on the day crowd is much higher as a percentage for a film like Simmba than Zero as its a mass film. The last Rohit Shetty film Golmaal Again had no advance but still put 30 crore nett but it was a holiday. The advance only opened on Tuesday and it has solid results.

It will be known how far it goes it goes in the evening but no doubt it will be good. Baaghi 2 got an advance of 10 crore nett and this film started late so it might fall short of that figure but could get close which would be very good for Simmba. If the multiplexes of Delhi and East Punjab can do just do just good to decent business then the year will end on a good note as these are the likely weak areas for the film. The advances are a good in Maharashtra, Gujarat and CPCI and these areas will support the film to cover shortfalls from the North if film has merits.
