    • This is with reference to Rahul Bajaj’s interview where he said that he is worried about his children growing up in India built on hate.
      Sorry but,
Where is the hate? I can see anger in news channels and social media mostly from irrelevant people who dont matter.

India either needs a US kind of presidential democratic system at the center (to do away with rogue coalitions & horse trading) or just be bifurcated into politically sovereign yet economically dependent states like the EU. Before the “Bharat Mata ki Jai” jingoists pounce on me, I’m from a family of military personnel and I think about this long & hard.

    A revisit: Ek Hasina Thi

What a film. Seriously, what a film! I don’t remember when I watched it last, and remember liking it a lot. But discovering the finer aspects of it, I realised this had some of the most well-edited fight sequences of its time. It also moves at a brazen pace, with a no-nonsense approach. This isn’t the most original of scripts but if anything, it reminds us of Raghavan’s fascination with the typical, revenge-seeking Sidney Sheldon heroine after she ends up on the other side of the law.

I think time has been kinder to the film, and it wouldn’t have been so without the scintillating performance of Saif and zurmila. The former, especially, understands the basic grammar of a thriller film pretty film. He uses on screen dashing persona to great effect, and is so totally at ease with playing the antagonist that his performance gels with the film, in fact, complements it rather well.

Also a reminder how most factory products (RGV’s) had such rocking BGM. This and Ab Tak Chappan come to mind as they were two of the best ‘indie’ films of their times. Both Shimit Amin and Raghavan moved on to make some very good films. This was the kick-start they needed to their careers. Wonder what would have happened to such fine talents had they not been discovered by RGV.

    • Rocky:

If you’re expecting that Kangana, as a single woman, is going to get anything supportive spoken about her or condemning the ‘goonda raj’ of Shiv Sena — remember folks who go all out against Bal Thackeray AND/OR any party when it comes to the Muslim community, now don’t care that the very same party has bull-dozed a woman’s office — you are living in a dream-land. For them, her political leanings come first, her woman-hood, second!

No sane person in the country has tolerated the disgusting adjectives used against Rhea, inspite of whatever leanings they belong to. But you see, those standards cannot be applied to Kangana! She deserves to have her office bull-dozed! [As soon as Sanjay Raut says something against a particular community, look at how the very same people will change their colors and become ‘active!’]

      Next retorts –

1> What were you doing during Hathras?2> Why were you silent and didn’t write a single comment on Hathras? [And I had mentioned in a comment that unlike someone, I am NOT going to shoot from Kangana’s shoulder to get ‘legitimization’ over the Hathras case.]

You see, this is how they shower guilt on you! And they are the ones constantly commenting on ‘whataboutery!’ Never mind the fact that NOT commenting, NOT tweeting, ISN’T an approval of any heinous crime!

Also, folks really need to understand the meaning of ‘racism’, and not use it superficially.!

      RACISM = POWER + PREJUDICE

NO individual on this blog is a racist, based on the fact that for racism, it requires the above equation to be TRUE. This is the basic 101 of the definition of racism. What happened to George Floyd is racism, but, if I hold some reservations against the African-American community, that is NOT racism; it is prejudice. An upper-caste Hindu using his power as HOD in any university or school using his power to NOT give a job to a deserving lower-caste person is RACISM. Since all the bloggers here are ONLY commentators, nobody is racist. But, we all would carry our prejudices with us!

However, how can one explain these things to people, as Abhijit put out brilliantly , are ok with folks shamelessly writing to the US government not to give visa to a CM, who disarmingly, casually use words like ‘Butcher’, ‘Divider’, ‘Genocide’, ‘Pogrom’, and let other pin-head journalists like a certain Ayyub and Karl Vicks?

      • Anjo I have not followed this case at all in great detail. What happened to Kangana’s personal property is downright despicable. No person whatever they have done deserves that. One can always investigate an illegal activity or whatever was being done but I don’t understand in any circumstances why anyone needs to trash someone’s place. That is like what a burglar does not people whom you expect security from.

I think you’re kind of right on Kangana that less sympathy is given for her. Isn’t that a natural human reaction? What has she also done to others through her words? She is not innocent in this.

Finally I hate politics and politics should not be involved, nor media in solving crime. Crime is police work.

IMO Kangana is a loser. She is also ill IMO so no point targeting her viciously either. I genuinely feel she maybe mentally unstable. So not good to incite her further, last thing anyone wants is another health issue.

        • Jayshah thanks for your comment. This will be my last one on this. I have previously mentioned that the problem with Kangana is that even if 70% of her interviews are a reflection of truth, it gets buried under the 30% unnecessary stuff she talks of. Her comments on Urmila and other actresses are unpardonable. I am not sure what her mental state is but I am not ready to call her ill.

Nobody’s lives/reputations have been destroyed by her because, as I mentioned before, let’s be clear, no producer is going to stop working with Ranbeer or Ranvir because they have been called druggies by Kangana. [I am talking only professionally here.] Personally, all the actors or actresses that she has named are WELL within their rights to file a case of defamation against her if they believe their names have been tarnished.

And it’s a fact that she’s fighting a losing battle! What’s she got in here? Her job as an actress is completely done. Who the hell is going to give a job to a ‘trouble-making’ Kangana? Politics? So much of drama just to get a BJP ticket while folks like Deol can just walk into the office, do some superficial work, and get a ticket? Is the BJP such a stickler for ‘high’ standards when they know there are some rogues within their party just as there are in others?

Lastly, this might be a Bollywood blog, but the moment you start using terms like ‘Canada Kumar’ [ one has to be an idiot of the highest order if using ‘Canada Kumar’ doesn’t involve political connotations ]and calling Kangana a ‘stooge’ of a certain party or a political inkling, based on her individual leanings, you have as well brought it onto the table already; no escaping from it when others respond.

I have responded enough and didn’t want to anymore on this. I hope I shall keep my word and be strong about it.

Ranbir etc are not going to lose anything agreed. Kangana will lose a lot for sure. This is martyr like activity. Nothing to gain, everything to lose.
I have always agreed nepotism exists and is way worse in a ‘face fits’ industry. However her approach to highlighting this has done a 180 since when she started. I would love equal opportunity but it’s a celebrity industry.

Canadian Kumar IMO is not political its nationality stuff and tongue in cheek to inspire a response from his fans. It’s a bit of fun. I doubt his chief spokesman has even responded to that slur here. Just like Salman is ridiculed for his legal cases, SRK for his immigration stuff, Aamir for his Turkish delight and Big B for his lapses in numbers on his blog. Each star gets battered in their own way.

Maybe she should have ONE extensive paper based or verbal interview where she illustrates point by point her grievances rather than daily rants to stay in the news?

Because she hasn’t ‘integrated’ or got the ‘perks’ from having a relationship with Hrithik she’s kind of used that against the industry.

@An Jo, again, you are making a mistake in your entire assumption. Kangana is not being a martyr, neither is she trying for a BJP seat. What Kangana is doing is sincerely following the old adage of “Any publicity is good publicity”. If not for her constant controversy, Kangana would be known as the actress without a single hit after TWMR. It’s her constant squabbles with everyone and anyone, resorting even to spreading fake news and misinformation about people like Aamir, calling Urmilla a soft porn star etc that keep her in the limelight. Plenty of journalists have on record stated how she used to insist on being asked questions about Hrithik during that whole fiasco. So it’s something she has been doing from long.

While you say 70%, I say 40% of what she’s saying might be true, but the rest are ridiculous, outrageous and dangerous statements and allegations to make. You talk about no one suffering any damage, that is not true, the brand value of actors and Bollywood has certainly been damaged. No one wants to go through a legal battle since they don’t want to suffer like Hrithik. Why, you can see how much of an attention seeker she is when she involves herself in a suit that has nothing to do with her at all. The moment controversy dies, she’ll find herself irrelevant unless she has a hit again.

This is one interview we must watch. How Republic TV’s ex-journalist talks about the agenda run by the channel. How they would closely monitor speeches of people like Mehbooba Mufti. 100 good words about India, but they won’t cover that because it goes against their agenda. One random comment that they can play with and they’d attack like hyenas.

I’m glad Bollywood is finally coming together to give back to the channel what it rightly deserves. Let us all remember that we have our love hate relationship with the industry for mostly mediocre, sometimes good stuff. But we’ve grown up watching this stuff. Good or bad, it keeps us going and interested in life.

And those who got some sadistic pleasure out of watching one crazy guy on TV repeatedly attack someone’s dignity, here’s more good news : Parle G and Bajaj have backed out of promoting their products on TV channels who spew hate all dya long. 25. Busy star Akshay Kumar just wrapped the shoot of Bell Bottom, dropped the trailer of Laxmmi Bomb and also showed up on the sets of his upcoming movie Prithviraj. Akshay Kumar co-stars with Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar in the movie, which is being directed by Chandraparaksh Dwivedi. In a statement, the filmmaker revealed that Prithviraj is back on tracks after a hiatus of six months. “Yes, we have resumed Prithviraj shoot at YRF studios and the entire team is excited to have a great shooting schedule,” the director said in a statement, reported PTI. Akshay was also spotted at the Yash Raj Films studio in Mumbai on Sunday. PTI reports that a huge set for Prithviraj’s shoot has been created inside the YRF studio in Mumbai.

Prithviraj, which is a biopic of Prithviraj Chauhan, stars Akshay Kumar in the titular role. Manushi has been roped in to play Sanyogita, Prithiviraj’s wife. Akshay has reportedly begun shooting along with actor Sonu Sood while Manushi is expected to join the sets sometime soon. Sanjay Dutt, who also stars in Prithviraj, is reportedly expected to join after Diwali – he is currently on a break from work because of health issues. Prithviraj, announced in 2019, was slated for a Diwali 2020 release, which has now been postponed.

This used to be a norm in the 60s and 70s.

Somwhere in 2000s Bollywood lost its plot to make several diverse big films. The star based system meant that very few big movies were made without stars.

Now this made stars as bottle neck for bollywood’s success. With lot of money, multiple wives and personal issues, drugs etc industry is now run by 4-5 stars – Akshay, Ajay, Aayushmann, Varun, Aaryan and Ranveer.

The result was an array of disruptive, thoughtless and dosconnected reforms which broke the back of black money driven economy (not a good model but was good enough to keep 7%GDP YoY despite massive corruption) pushing the country behind by ages and decades.

  41. Costume Designer Bhanu Athaiya, India’s First Oscar Winner, Dies At 91

Bhanu Athaiya, who was born in Kolhapur, began her career as a costume designer in Hindi cinema with Guru Dutt’s 1956 super hit C.I.D

Mumbai: Costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, India’s first Oscar winner, died at her home on Thursday after prolonged illness, her daughter said. She was 91.
Athaiya, who won an Oscar for her work in the 1983 film Gandhi, passed away peacefully in her sleep, her daughter Radhika Gupta told PTI.

The last rites took place at the Chandanwadi crematorium in South Mumbai.

“She passed away early this morning. Eight years ago, she was diagnosed with a tumour in her brain. For the last three years, she was bedridden because one side (of her body) was paralysed,” her daughter said.

Athaiya, who was born in Kolhapur, began her career as a costume designer in Hindi cinema with Guru Dutt’s 1956 super hit C.I.D. She won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design in Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi along with John Mollo.

    Tanhaji:

Finally saw this after delaying this for a while. The production vaues are great and scenes are well shot, but the overuse of graphics and CGI kind gets tiring, even when they’re pretty to look at. The scenes largely have a been-there, done-that vibe, and the background score gets jarring over the 50 odd times it’s played throughout the film. But this is an entertaining watch, and it was tough to look away or press the pause button even when the scenes are somewhat lame and uninspired. Tanhaji works in a big way. Is it the action? The wonderfully conceived climax? I not sure. But it’s still a largely satisfying commercial film.

Saif is a pro at negative roles. He just makes whatever cliched part he gets into his own, gives it a delicious twist, and comes out with a towering performance. In someone else’s hands, this role could’ve been just a regular, out and out villain. Even when he’s given the regular, don’t mess with me lines to work around with, he chews up the scenery. The film is largely watchable because of him. Ajay comes across as the action hero from Shivaay in a different physical getup.

A fun film for action lovers, and even for those who don’t have much expectations other than a fairly engrossing, half decent action entertainer

The guy seemed pretty okay, had a vision. I guess in the end his own ideas got in his way. Him not paying Indian workers was about the only bad thing of him, otherwise he seemed like a pretty good guy.

Was interesting to hear someone ask him you’re Indian Donald Trump and his reply, only I don’t have bankruptcies…
I remember him having some sort of issue with SRK during his IPL days.

        • Akshay is the biggest Khiladi after all, this movie was always meant to release on Eid or Bakrid. Now it makes sense why they made the hero a Muslim and probably a Dubai NRI, just so that they have a massy song with tons of Gulf references and entice the Gulf market and a section of Muslims (which is true, but not as big as it is said to be) that would have gone for Radhe. Plus, some of the great liberals like Barkha Dutt etc would have flooded us with tons of opinion pieces about secularism, blah-blah that would have made some of the wokes support it at least. Yeh Akshay seedha saadha se bahut door hai..

PS: I really liked the song, catchy, had some weird ass lyrics, Kiara Advani seems to have put some fat and it gives a nice feel to her booty shakes. Akshay doesn’t look too awkward thanks to the beard, would have worked in theatres, sad it’s going on OTT.

    The Trial of Chicago 7:

An astonishing courtroom drama that one might find a lot relevant in today’s unsettling political drama.

Good to see Sacha Baron as a character that isn’t a spoof(Hugo was another) and Eddie Redmayne in not a physically demanding role, but the real performers of the film were Yahya Abdul-Mateen as a short tempered member of Black Panther group, and Frank Langella as the biased judge, who has high chances of receiving an Oscar nomination for his role.

An essential watch, this sharply edited film might just become one of this year’s favourites at next year’s Oscars. Highly recommended

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was released twenty five years ago today and it became the second film in history to cross the 50 crore nett mark. The film did not beat the record of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun…! which released a year earlier but a 50 crore nett total was still an insane number because barring these two films the next best total was 25 crore nett.

The film made Shahrukh Khan a big star and it was this image in the film which was to catapult him into boxoffice superstardom a few years later with films like Dil To Pagal Hai and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. A year earlier Hum Aapke Hain Kaun…! had a restricted release initially but Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was a normal release for a love story barring Bihar where it had just a one cinema release only in Patna.

The film was a Diwali release and clashed with a Rishi Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit starrer and collected 55 lakhs nett apprx on day one while Yaraana was 46 lakhs nett. More than that Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge opened to 95% while Yaarana was 70%. There was also the Dev Anand film Gangster which released on the same day.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is till today the biggest BLOCKBUSTER from the YRF banner with nearly 5 crore footfalls. The next best are Sultan, Dhoom 3 and Dil To Pagal Hai with around 3 crore. It also was the first film from YRF to score in the East as till that time all the YRF films be it their biggest HITS like Daag (1973), Kabhi Kabhie (1976) or Darr (1993) could never really perform in the Eastern circuit (West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and Odisha)

The film celebrated a silver jubilee run in around 50 theatres across the country and in Mumbai city and Delhi city the collections were pretty much similar to Hum Aapke Hain Kaun…! with 13 crore nett coming from Mumbai and 5.50 crore nett coming from Delhi city. In Overseas it created history by collected almost $5 million and this was at a time when $500k was regarded as a huge total though obviously things changed post Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Below are the weekly collections of Dilwale Dulhanai Le Jayenge.

Hummer EV Edition 1 will go on sale for a suggested price of $112,595.

This version will include Crab Mode and Extract Mode, which allows the truck’s suspension height to be raised approximately six inches (149 mm) to help negotiate “extreme off-road situations such as clearing boulders or fording water

A solid Al Pacino, a remarkable and sensation Robin Williams and a liner, non convoluted straight as an arrow psychological plot (thanks to the original work) I rate this film Nolan’s best after The Dark Knight, Prestige & Dunkirk. Absolute must watch!

    • Agreed; a great movie that can be bracketed with FOLLOWING, TDK, TDKR, The Prestige, and Batman Begins. Lovely performances from both Pacino and Williams…

      • What’s your thought on Dunkirk? A very unconventional, brave technical masterpiece in my opinion.

        Like

        • Nolan’s Insomnia is a remake of Norwegian movie of same name. I know it’s still very well done but remakes don’t get extra points from me over original work. It’s not like Oscar who will give Scorsese award for ‘The Department’ when it’s a direct remake and ignore all of his original work.

        • Well its under-rated is what I meant. A film maker with films like Memento, Following, TDK, Prestige, Inception and Dunkirk does not need brownie points.

        • I don’t think Insomnia is under-rated in real sense, it’s still regarded as one of Nolan’s highest rated movie. It just came prior to the Batman blockbuster phase. Nothing against Insomnia but for example, Interstellar is one his lowest rated movies but I think it’s far difficult project which seeks of unseen originality in stages, even though all sum doesn’t come across perfectly, it also demands far more stellar effort from a director than doing a remake is my point.

        • The boldest, most unconventional film of his for me would continue to be Dunkirk. Its the kind of “middle of nowhere” film without a concrete script and narrated from the point of view of 400,000 soldiers in a situation where each one of them were looking to survive. The lack of concrete characterization coupled with the desire to survive the battle (aspects that its faced criticism for from certain fronts) and of course extra ordinary use of the 70mm IMAX film and a background score that pretty much defined the film makes this one of the most courageous and outstanding films in recent times.

Only thing that can beat this run is the blockbuster run of Salman and Aamir from 2011-2016 and SRK from 1995 – 2002. I wish they all did 5 more movies than they did at their peak but heck no complains. One should give the credit whereever due.

I would agree with this if you think 30 years is fading into age related decline.

So we can expect Akshay to be on top next 30 years? He has to have at least 5 HOGTY in next 30 years because he certainly didn’t in the past 30 years.

Let’s think about it this way. A middle order batsmen averaging 10 to 20 runs is not going to be looked upon as the opening batsmen or someone coming in top order.

So unless akshay shows me that he is now top order batsman consistently, year after year, how can i give him credit?

I do give him credit that he is a super solid middle order batsman.

And we can only talk about boxoffice because as far as acting is concerned, he is not even in top 10.

They’re definitely catering to a largely semi literate degenerated audience of a third world society that’s emotionally and psychologically imbalanced and wrongly prioritized. And then you have over compensation from clowns like Kashyap & Motwane’s who in their urge to imitate the west end up delivering junk after junk. Its for the reason 99% of Bollywood films (both urban and mass centric) are trash and there’s none except Sircar, Raghavan and Neeraj Pandey (to an extent) whose even even delivered a consistent filmography for the last 15 years. But in today’s social media digital age of right & left wing media pimps, tukde gangs & andh bhakts and a world predominantly dominated by idiots & lazy keyboard warriors (who prefer buying their shoes & undergarments online, of whom the political classes are a part) confidentially as well as diplomatic and wartime ethics are a farce.

    • Another remake hoga. Novelty factor is gone now, something which was always there with Salman at his peak. There was always a Prem ratan with Tiger and Ready with Dabangg.
Now all movies seem to be same Daroga Vs Gunda story.
Dabangg3 was mauled by Good newwz made at little over half its budget. Good Newwz had novelty.

The endless delays, the sudden cameos, the never ending shoot, the constant changes and the fact that they don’t have a single look, let alone release date out even in rumors makes it seem to be a strong contender for the biggest bomb in Hindi film history.
